Background: The dementia care policy in Japan emphasizes the views of people living with dementia in care planning. An exploration of the everyday wishes of older people living with dementia can help clarify their priorities and assist in improving dementia care. This study aimed to explore the everyday wishes of older people living with dementia in Japan. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in Aichi prefecture in Japan. Older people with mild to moderate dementia were considered for inclusion. Participants were recruited from a dementia outpatient clinic. In-depth interviews were conducted with 36 participants in the same dementia outpatient clinic from January to October 2019. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim. Inductive content analysis was carried out to analyze the data. Findings: Participants expressed their everyday wishes within five themes (desire of being connected, freedom to decide, involvement in activities, status quo, and self-reliance). Older people living with dementia loved the connection with their family and wanted to have an enjoyable life by engaging in several activities without others' interference. They desired to maintain the status quo and not be a burden to others. Conclusions: This study provides evidence on the everyday wishes of people living with dementia. Identified wishes are mostly on emotional aspects of their daily lives. The findings of our study might help provide care for the people living with dementia considering their wishes. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is important for academic and social success, yet responsive SEL for Black youth remains underexamined. The current study analyzed focus groups to investigate how Black boys (N = 10) in an urban middle school think about emotion and its regulation. Results revealed that participants negotiate tension between emotion expression and control; they argued that inhibition of emotions in public was essential, but they desired greater emotional freedom. We interpret these patterns through the developmental framework of accommodation and resistance. We discuss implications and the need for transformative SEL in urban schools serving Black boys. We investigated the cumulative prevalence of self-harm ideation among stroke survivors of the AFFINITY trial. We assessed these thoughts with the last item of the PHQ-9, and functional impairment with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Of 1221 participants (age 63.9 ± 12.3 years, 775 men), 11 reported wishing to die or self-harm at baseline. By week 52, 36 of 1159 surviving participants had reported wishing to die or self-harm. Treatment with fluoxetine for 26 weeks did not change the prevalence of these thoughts compared with placebo. Clinically significant symptoms of depression were present in 95 % of participants with recurrent self-harm thoughts. The present essay explores the race, power and identity dynamics present in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, under the scope of Post-colonialist Studies, specifically using Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks, and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s Liquid Love: On the Frailty of Human Bonds as conceptual references, and questioning if, considering the white-dominated hierarchic system in which the characters of the novel (and non-white people in non-fictional existence) are inserted and the lack of reference and of a stable, loving environment that pervades Pecola Breedlove’s existence as a young black girl, she can be considered to have developed an identity of her own, through the analysis of the processes and mechanisms she undertook inside these same dynamics she was been born into. This paper examines narrative representations of authors and authorship in English-language fiction from the 1890s to the 1920s. From Henry James onwards, such narratives revise the basic, and by that time exhausted, plot elements of the novel of literary apprenticeship as featured in Dickens's David Copperfield and Thackeray's Pendennis , among many others. Instead of focusing on ideas of development and professional formation, they depict authors subdued by a sense of shrinking opportunities and lack of movement. Aging or dying authors in James and Mann, young but soon disappointed authors in Joyce, Forster, or Green: wherever we look, we find an ambivalence of promise that often ends in stagnation, failure, even death. In this context, my paper presents a close reading of three less frequently discussed modernist variations on the literary bildungsroman: Arthur Machen's The Hill of Dreams (1897/1907), E.M. In this article, we wish to clarify the way of being and appearing of ambiences. This is achieved, first of all, by distinguishing them from lived experiences on the one hand, and external things, on the other; then, by making the hypothesis of a third mode of being which comes from what stands between the subjects and the objects and which belongs to neither one nor the other. Finally, our proposal aims at showing that if atmospheres are properties of situations even before subjects feel them, then they feel them anyway only as these intrinsic and presubjective properties. This paper describes the state of the art and gives a survey of the wide literature published in the last years on the fractional Laplacian. We will first recall some definitions of this operator in and its main properties. Then, we will introduce the four main operators often used in the case of a bounded domain; and we will give several simple and significant examples to highlight the difference between these four operators. Also we give a rather long list of references : it is certainly not exhaustive but hopefully rich enough to track most connected results. The identity issues experienced in a post 9/11 novel by Ali Sethi have a slightly different complexion from most of the contemporary novels focusing on these themes.i A great many, (mostly Pakistani novels) addressing these issues are set against the American background, while only some, take up this issue of identity and impact of 9/11 against the ethnic backdrop of Pakistan; a setting of The Wish Maker (2009), in which some important facets of Pakistani society/psyche are explored. Disregarding the disparaging connotationsii of considering Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, and Homi K Bhabha as the "Holy Trinity," Robert Young observes that though there are many things overlapping in their theories as both Spivak and Bhabha have drawn from Said's Orientalism, yet they cannot be taken as similar. Said, in turn is influenced by Michel Foucault's New Historicism.iii The text of the novel under study helps invoking selective features of Foucauldian New Historicism with special emphasis on the factors contributing for hegemony and aspects of Bhabha's hybridity theory, which may be seen as some of the dominant concerns of the present century's global and Anglophonic literature. Thus, engaging with these theoretical perspectives, this paper offers cloze reading of this novel to study some of the features of Pakistan's cultural complexity in the present millennium. Eells and Sober proved in 1983 that screening off is a sufficient condition for the transitivity of probabilistic causality, and in 2003 Shogenji noted that the same goes for probabilistic support. We start this paper by conjecturing that Hans Reichenbach may have been aware of this fact. Then we consider the work of Suppes and Roche, who demonstrated in 1986 and 2012 respectively that screening off can be generalized, while still being sufficient for transitivity. We point out an interesting difference between Reichenbach's screening off and the generalized version, which we illustrate with an example about haemophilia among the descendants of Queen Victoria. Given a periodic graph, we wish to determine via combinatorial methods whether it has periodic embeddings in the plane that—via motions that preserve edge-lengths and periodicity—can be continuously deformed into another non-congruent embedding of the graph. By introducing NBAC-colourings for the corresponding quotient gain graphs, we identify which periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane when the lattice of periodicity is fixed. We further characterise with NBAC-colourings which 1-periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane with a flexible lattice of periodicity, and characterise in special cases which 2-periodic graphs have flexible embeddings in the plane with a flexible lattice of periodicity. This paper provides the first systematic investigation of the role of insubordination, the diachronic conventionalization of formally subordinate clauses as main clauses, in the syntax and semantics of the Ancient Greek sentence. Since diachronic studies are still a desideratum, this paper details the insubordination of if- and that-clauses from Archaic to Post-Classical Greek. Firstly, a principled diachronic analysis of the insubordination of various if-wishes (with ϵἰ, ϵἰ/αἲ γάρ and ϵἴθϵ/αἴθϵ (γάρ)) and that-wishes (with ὡς and ἵνα) is performed using both functional (discursive vs syntactic independence) and formal criteria (vocatives, particles, sentence complexity, mood extensions) in order to determine their relative degree of conventionalization of the main clause use. Subsequently, insubordinate directive, assertive and evaluative constructions (with ϵἰ, ἐάν, ὅπως and ἵνα) from Archaic, Classical and Post-Classical Greek are analysed before presenting a diachronic constructional typology of insubordination and suggestions for future avenues of research. Influencer marketing acquires customers who follow their favorite celebrities, who have shared beliefs and opinions. This research explores the self-motives and influencer-related factors that lead to influencer congruence. Influenced customers subsequently recommend those influencers to others. No concrete scale of recommendation is available so far. This research also conceptualizes, develops, and validates a scale for recommendations. In this study, 451 respondents answered questions about the influencers they follow. Normality, reliability, and validity were used for hypothesis testing. Results show the positive and direct impacts of all proposed hypotheses. The findings contribute to the literature by presenting a balanced approach to studying two parallel yet integral aspects of influencer marketing: the influencer and the consumer. Ten years ago, after 20 years as a university professor, I was asked to direct the teaching and learning support center at my university. I quickly realized I had almost no knowledge of the published scholarship on this subject. From my reading of this literature, I found the research on the predictors of student learning particularly informative. In particular, I gained an appreciation for the impact of course design. In this article, I summarize a framework for designing "significant learning experiences." In discussing the three key components of course design (learning outcomes, learning activities, and learning assessments), I offer tips and give examples relevant for the field of management. My intent is to share the most important information I have learned from a decade of conversations with experts on student learning—the things I wish someone had taught me 30 years ago. The IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) wishes to thank the 1344 reviewers over the past year who have performed an essential role in maintaining the quality of this publication. T-ASE strives for the 90–90 standard, i.e., 90% of articles should be reviewed within 90 days of submission. The review process starts when the Editor-in-Chief assigns the paper to an Editor, who assigns it to an Associate Editor (AE). The AE then obtains confirmation from three to five reviewers, carefully studies the results, and makes a recommendation to the Editor, who then makes a decision that is reported back to the lead author. This review process is very demanding, especially under time constraints. We have summarized the process under “Guidelines for T-ASE Editors and AEs for Handling Papers” on our website. It is not uncommon for families to wait in hopes of receiving test results that show a treatable mutation, such as in the case of lung cancer. Waiting for such test results can distract families from focusing on a patient's current pain and suffering, especially when families experience heightened emotions and anticipatory grief. The substituted judgement standard can be helpful in resolving ethical dilemmas by encouraging families to think about what decision a patient would have made if competent, thus preventing unnecessary pain and suffering. This case study sheds light on how the substituted judgement standard was used with a patient's family and how the family's hope for a treatable mutation affected their perception of the patient's clinical condition. The paper provides the needed preference completion and quantification for f ully p robabilistic d esign (FPD) of DM strategies. FPD (covering the usual Bayesian DM) probabilistically models the agent's environment and quantifies its preferences via an ideal probabilistic model of the closed DM loop. The p robability d ensity (pd) models (closed-loop) behaviour, a collection of involved random variables. Its ideal twin is high on desired behaviours, small on undesired and zero on forbidden ones. The FPD-optimal strategy minimises the K ullback- L eibler d ivergence (KLD) of the closed-loop modelling pd to the ideal twin. The exposed preference quantification chooses the optimal ideal pd from the set of pds compatible with partially-specified agent's preferences. The optimal ideal pd minimises the KLD minima reached by the optimal strategies for respective imminent ideal pds. This preference-focused twin of the minimum KLD principle was applied to special sets of ideal pds. One of the most robust effects in person perception research is the spontaneous trait inference (STI) effect, defined as the spontaneous tendency to draw dispositional inferences from actors' behaviors. Yet, research has suggested that stereotypes affect STIs by inhibiting stereotype incongruent or facilitating stereotype congruent STIs. These findings are remarkable considering (a) the robustness of STI effects and (b) the typical design of behavioral statements in this research as unambiguously indicative of traits. We present a series of four high-powered, preregistered experiments (N = 1004) that originally aimed at replicating stereotype effects on STIs as basis for investigating their underlying psychological mechanisms. We employed a probe recognition paradigm that has been used in prior research, pairing trait-implying behavioral statements with category labels implying either trait-congruent or -incongruent stereotypes. We additionally implemented several methodological improvements like a larger and extensively pretested stimulus set. While we observed highly robust STI effects in all experiments, these were largely unaffected by actor stereotypes: Only one of the four experiments showed the hypothesized STI-stereotype interaction with a small effect size. We discuss how these findings add to the rather small number of existing publications on STIs and stereotypes and how the observed robustness of behavior-based impressions parallels prior research on intentional impression formation. We aim to instigate debate, further theorizing, and research that enhances our understanding of the boundary conditions of stereotype effects on spontaneous trait inferences in impression formation from unambiguous behaviors. Curiosity is a psychological response to uncertainty that facilitates learning and other benefits, but little is known about how highly curious people interpret and process uncertainty differently from their less curious counterparts. We investigated the relationship between curiosity (both interest- and deprivation-type) and a variety of attitudes towards uncertainty. An adult sample from the United Kingdom (N = 398) completed an online questionnaire measuring dispositional interest- and deprivation-type curiosity, positive attitudes towards uncertainty, intolerance of uncertainty, and tendencies to focus on potential positive or negative outcomes. A higher score on interest was associated with finding uncertainty more enjoyable and focusing on positive possibilities. A higher score on deprivation was associated with being more intolerant of uncertainty and focusing on negative possibilities. The connections between curiosity and attitudes towards uncertainty differ according to the type of curiosity experienced. Interest may reinforce learning by promoting a fascination with the unknown and a focus on positive discoveries.
