Deinking waste paper is done in various ways, and research on newer methods is also being done. Traditional deinking methods to remove ink from waste printing papers have a relatively high efficiency compared to contact methods, but in non-contact printing such as electrophotographic printing (LaserJet printers and photocopiers) due to Mixing of the ink with the paper texture during the stabilization of the ink with the help of high heat, the traditional deinking methods are less efficient and it is necessary to use newer methods. In this research, enzymatic deinking of office waste paper was done by a commercial cellulase enzyme in a neutral environment. 15 tests were conducted, and optical and printing properties including the paper were investigated. By measuring the reflection before and after printing and measuring the print density after printing, it was determined that the printability of deinked paper is within the desired range. Eric's number was 128 ppm for sample number 8 and 138 ppm for sample number 12, which has decreased compared to the control sample with an Eric number of 571 ppm. Traditionally, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) production has primarily relied on virgin cellulose sources. Yet, the shift to using paper mill sludge (PMS) as a source for CNF underscores the significance of reusing and recycling industrial byproducts. PMS contains significant amounts of cellulose that can be extracted as a raw material. The purpose of present study is to provide a sustainable approach to PMS utilization as a paper coating additive in the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFPMS) form via simply scalable wire-wound rod coating method. The effect of CNFPMS additive amounts at two coating layers on microstructure and surface properties of coatings such as porosity, air permeability surface roughness and optical properties such as brightness, gloss and CIE L*a*b* is studied, which they can also provide insight for the eventual print performance. Results indicated that the obtained CNFPMS in paper coating shows 52% decrease in porosity, presenting significant improvement in the coating microstructure. The marginal increase in permeability coefficient and surface roughness, 54% and 10%, respectively, suggests improving color reproduction and preventing color density losses. Optical analysis showed slight decrease in brightness and gloss, as was expected. Notably, the lightness was improved, which also indicates increasing color gamut volume in printing applications. The influences of nano-chitosan and cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) on the optical and mechanical properties of paper made from chemi-mechanical pulp (CMP) were investigated. Bleached chemi-mechanical pulp (CMP) was selected as the control sample. The cPAM was considered at four levels (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75%), while chitosan was added to the CMP suspension at three levels (0%, 1%, and 2%). Paper test specimens were prepared according to TAPPI standards with a basis weight of 60 g/m2, and their optical and mechanical properties were measured. The results indicated that the opacity, greenness, tear strength, burst strength, and Gurley seconds were increased, whereas brightness, water absorption, and a* factor were decreased by increasing the amount of cPAM. Adding chitosan to CMP increased the a* factor, tear strength, breaking length, burst strength, Gurley seconds, water absorption, and greenness in the resulting paper. When polyacrylamide and nano-chitosan were added simultaneously to CMP, the brightness, water absorption, and greenness of the resulting paper decreased, but opacity, burst strength, tear strength, and air resistance had an appropriate increase. In all treatments, the best results were found at 1% chitosan and 0.5% cPAM due to favorable optical and mechanical properties.

The effect of bamboo virgin pulp addition to the recycled pulp in enhancing the recycled paper's mechanical properties was evaluated. Malaysian bamboo virgin pulp used in this research were Bambusa vulgaris (Aur bamboo), Gigantochloa levis (Beting bamboo), and Gigantochloa scortechinii (Semantan bamboo). The addition of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt% of bamboo virgin pulp improved the burst index, folding endurance, tearing index, and tensile index of the recycled paper from 2.27 to 3.17 kPa.m2/g, 7 to 15 double folds, 5.98 to 8.27 mN.m2/g, and 24.86 to 32.40 Nm/g, respectively. These were equivalent to the increment percentage for burst index, folding endurance, tearing index, and tensile index at the range of 6.61 to 39.65%, 28.57 to 114.29%, 15.72 to 38.59%, and 10.50 to 33.87%, respectively. The application of bamboo virgin pulp is very promising in improving the recycled paper's mechanical properties and this could be further extended in enhancing the other properties such as physical and optical paper properties. Two different methods were used to modify fibers: NaOH + urea and TEMPO ((2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxidanyl) and blended with traditional paper fibers. Subsequently, we evaluated the resulting sheets for their optical, strength, and thermo-mechanical characteristics. Notably, we also scrutinized sheets created exclusively with 100% TEMPO-modified fibers. The addition of modified fibers led to improvements in several strength properties, but it had a noteworthy negative impact on the optical properties of TEMPO-treated fibers compared to the other papers. Furthermore, thermal analysis revealed that the contraction rates of the samples increased considerably up to 40–50 °C for the out-of-plane direction and surpassed 130 °C for the in-plane direction. In general, the inclusion of modified fibers had a significant effect on thermo-mechanical properties. Specifically, TEMPO modification resulted in an increase in the maximum in-plane contraction ratio, shifting it from −0.40% to −0.59%, along with its corresponding temperature. The manufacturing of paper with new functional properties is a current problem today. A method of modifying the surface layer of paper by the partial dissolution of cellulose on its surface is proposed. N-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) is proposed for use as a solvent, the regeneration of which provides an environmentally friendly process. It was shown that among the possible hydrate forms of the solvent, the monohydrate and higher-melting forms are optimal for modifying the paper surface. The temperature–time modes of processing were revealed and the weight gain and density increase in the course of modification were estimated. The structural and morphological features of the original and modified paper were studied by X-ray imaging and scanning microscopy. The NMMO surface treatment makes it possible to vary the air permeability of the paper, making it practically non-permeable. The capillary and pore system were radically transformed after the partial dissolution of cellulose and its coagulation, as the formed cellulose film isolates them, which leads to a decrease in surface absorbency. The processing conditions allowing for the optimization of the optical and strength properties of the modified paper samples are revealed. Simultaneous effects of using cellulose nanocellulose and chemical pulp in paper money were studied with bottom combers cotton pulp. The bottom combers pulp and chemical pulp were prepared in a factory that produced durable paper, and their products were transferred to the laboratory. The nanocellulose was prepared by Nano Novin Polymer Co. and was consumed at 4 levels, i.e., 0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.9%. After commixing the pulp with the nanocellulose at the identified percentages, handsheets of 90 g∙m-2 papers were produced. The results showed that by increasing the amount of nanocellulose, up to 0.9%, the tensile strength index, burst strength index, tear strength index, and folding endurance increased 22.7%, 38.9%, 7.7%, and 348%, respectively, when compared with the control sample. Enhancement via nanocellulose up to 0.9% increased the surface smoothness up to 7.9% compared with the control sample, while the air resistance and Cobb decreased 69% and 7.9% in comparison with control sample, respectively. By increasing the nanocellulose content up to 0.9% the opacity increased 0.7%; moreover, the brightness and whitening decreased 3.5% and 10.6, respectively. This research aimed to investigate the efficiency of crude xylanase–pectinase in pulping of sugarcane bagasse. Optimum biopulping was obtained, using xylanase–pectinase dose 200–60 IU/g, bagasse/liquid ratio 1:10 and 1.0% Tween 80 concentration at 55 °C temperature, pH 8.5 and period of treatment 180 min. Treatment of sugarcane bagasse samples with these enzymes generated pulp with lower rejections (58.76%), total solids (12.64%), kappa number (47.77%), higher screened pulp yield (10.66%), along with enhanced optical and physical properties, in comparison with a chemical pulp. Bagasse biopulping resulted in a 13% decrease in alkali dose to obtain the optical and physical properties similar to those achieved under the 100% alkali dose. The breaking length, burst factor, tear index, double fold, gurley porosity and viscosity were improved by 15.19, 37.64, 2.47, 37.77, 35 and 23.17%, respectively, after bleaching treatment of biopulped samples. Thus, enzymatic pulping is an eco-friendly environmentally sustainable approach, since it reduces the use of pulping chemicals and simultaneously improves the paper quality. Layered metal chalcogenide materials are exceptionally appealing in optoelectronic devices thanks to their extraordinary optical properties. Recently, their application as flexible and wearable photodetectors have received a lot of attention. Herein, broadband and high-performance paper-based PDs were established in a very facile and inexpensive method by rubbing molybdenum disulfide and titanium trisulfide crystals on papers. Transferred layers were characterized by SEM, EDX mapping, and Raman analyses, and their optoelectronic properties were evaluated in a wavelength range of 405–810 nm. Although the highest and lowest photoresponsivities were respectively measured for TiS3 (1.50 mA/W) and MoS2 (1.13 μA/W) PDs, the TiS3–MoS2 heterostructure not only had a significant photoresponsivity but also showed the highest on/off ratio (1.82) and fast response time (0.96 s) compared with two other PDs. This advantage is due to the band offset formation at the heterojunction, which efficiently separates the photogenerated electron–hole pairs within the heterostructure. Numerical simulation of the introduced PDs also confirmed the superiority of TiS3–MoS2 heterostructure over the other two PDs and exhibited a good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, MoS2 PD demonstrated very high flexibility under applied strain, but TiS3 based PDs suffered from its fragility and experience a remarkable drain current reduction at strain larger than ± 0.33%. Xylan is the primary hemicellulose in most hardwood species, especially in birch. Research has highlighted the exploitation of xylans as a strengthenhancing additive to paper due to the current trend for the effective utilization of biomass. In this paper, a new pulping process was proposed, which involved the extraction of xylan prior to pulping, followed by the readsorption of the pulp after the final stage in the digester, followed by a suitable bleaching process. The aim of this work was to bleach hardwood kraft pulp (brown pulp) with adsorbed birch xylan via hydrogen peroxide and study the effect of the bleaching parameters on the paper properties. The results showed that the optical properties of paper decreased; however, the mechanical properties increased after the brown pulp adsorbed birch xylan. During the bleaching process, better mechanical properties were obtained with shorter bleaching times and lower bleaching temperatures, initial pHs, and MgSO4 dosages. However, the optical properties were improved as the bleaching time, temperature, initial pH, and MgSO4 dosage were increased. The thermal yellowing of hornbeam chemi-mechanical pulps (CMP) after bleaching with hydrogen peroxide and sodium dithionite was investigated. The hornbeam chips were randomly chosen from Mazandaran wood and paper industries. The CMP pulps prepared with 85% yield were separately bleached with diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), without DTPA, and hydrogen peroxide. Some pulps were bleached with sodium dithionite. The optical properties of prepared hand-sheets of 60 g/m2 after spraying with 0.5% DTPA were measured using TAPPI standard methods. All prepared papers were thermally aged separately in an oven at 105 °C for 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 h. The optical properties, such as brightness, yellowness, coefficient of absorption, k/s ratio, post color (PC) number, and a* factor, before and after thermal aging were measured. The results showed that from 0 to 40 h, the optical properties of paper increased except brightness and greenness. This increase was more extensive up to 15 h. Additionally, among the various treatments, DTPA treatment in longterm thermal aging and the use of sodium dithionite and hydrogen peroxide in the short-term aging had noticeable effects on brightness durability and decrease in the color reversion. In the present work, the possibility of increasing the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content in sheets of paper to optimize their properties was investigated. A new class of polymeric additives for papermaking is proposed as well as a method for their use in paper sheet containing the CaCO3 precipitated addition. Calcium carbonate precipitated (PCC) and fibers cellulose were adjusted with a cationic polyacrylamide flocculating agent (polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (plyDADMAC) or cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM)). PCC was obtained in the laboratory by a double-exchange reaction between calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) suspension. After testing, the dosage of PCC was established at 35%. To improve the systems of additives studied, the materials obtained were characterized and their optical and mechanical properties were analysed. The PCC had a positive influence over all of the paper samples, but in the case of use of cPAM and polyDADMAC polymers the paper obtained had superior properties compared to the paper obtained without additives. Highly transparent paper with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radical-oxidized wood fibers (TOWFs) is a nascent sustainable photonic material for optoelectronics. However, its relatively low built-in haze and poor production efficiency are two remaining challenges. In this work, a facile and efficient ion exchange approach is proposed to address above obstacles by converting Na+ on their surface into Ca2+, thus enabling the rapid fabrication of highly transparent (90.0%) paper with high built-in haze (93.5%). Moreover, the relationship between Ca2+ concentration and the optical properties and production efficiency of transparent paper is explored. When the Ca2+ concentration increases from 0 to 0.8 mmol/g, the haze rises from 68.6% to 93.5% while maintaining a 90.0% transparency, and the filtration time decreases from 62.5 to 17.5 min. Finally, two application cases of this transparent paper for increasing the device performance of light-emitting diode (LED) and perovskite solar cell are demonstrated. This work proposes a facile and efficient method to simultaneously enhance the build-in haze and production efficiency of highly transparent paper with TOWFs and may bring us a step further towards preparing transparent and hazy paper on an industrial scale. The aim of this study was to explore the potential of crude xylano-pectinolytic enzymes in bio-pulping of rice straw, in order to reduce environmental pollution. In this study, the effect of integration of bio-pulping strategy before chemical pulping of rice straw has been investigated. The bio-pulping efficiency was found to be maximum at xylanase:pectinase dose of 400:120 IU/g rice straw, temperature 55 °C, treatment time 3 h, Tween 80 (1%), pH 8.5 and pulping consistency 1:10 (g/mL). Bio-pulping enhanced the permeability of pulping chemicals, generated pulp with higher yield, brightness, along with higher residual active alkali content of black liquor in comparison to the pulp obtained after chemical pulping. Bio-pulping also resulted in 10% reduction of alkali dose and improved paper quality, with increase in breaking length (13.9%), burst index (27.0%), double fold (39.3%), gurley porosity (18.75%) and viscosity (8.77%) of unbleached bio-pulp. Bio-pulping also improved the bleachability by removing the D 2 step of bleaching and produced pulp with higher physical strength properties, breaking length (15.92%), burst index (20.47%), tear index (3.87%), double fold (36.0%), gurley porosity (25.0%) and viscosity (28.36%). Hence, this environmentally sustainable bio-pulping approach can decrease the chemical load and ultimately pollution, along with enhance the yield and quality of paper. Owing to unique physical and optical properties, fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) are used in various biomedical applications. In this study, C-dots have been integrated as sensing agent on paper surface for colorimetric determination of clinically important analytes. Polyacrylamidebased C-dots coated C-dips showed visible color change from white to brown for iron (Fe2+, Fe3+) sample. Moreover, iron and copper (Cu2+) samples showed significant quenching of C-dots under UV. Images captured with/without UV were analyzed to study the relationship between different iron and copper concentrations and colorimetric intensity values. Color intensity and fluorescence showed a linear relationship with concentrations of iron and copper (Range: 1×10-4 to 1×10-2 M, Linearity: R² = 0.94). LOD from the paper sensor showed a sensitivity of 3.89×10-5 μM, 4.65×10-5 μM and 6.7×10-5 μM for Fe3+, Fe2+ and Cu2+ respectively, reflecting its reliability as low-cost sensing solution to analyze clinically relevant analytes as reported in current study. The optical and mechanical properties of paper sheets were compared following treatment with biopolymers using two different methods, i.e., internal functionalization and surface modification. Industrial chemimechanical pulp was provided, and two groups of paper handsheets were made. The first group of paper sheet samples were prepared with incorporated chitosan in a mixed-in-pulp slurry (at three treatment levels, i.e., 0%, 1%, and 2%), and in the second group, untreated handsheets were spray-coated with either 2% chitosan, 2% nanocellulose, 0.5% DTPA, or a mixed solution (0.5% DTPA + 2% chitosan + 2% nanocellulose). Then, the optical and mechanical properties of the prepared paper sheets were analyzed. The brightness, opacity, and greenness/redness of the samples were measured spectrophotometrically using the CIELab system. Additional properties of the paper, i.e., the water absorption, air permeability, and tear, tensile, and burst resistance, of the treated samples were also measured. The results indicated that the treatments had a considerable effect on the relative mechanical and optical parameters, which resulted in an increase in the mechanical properties, especially when the nano-particles were applied to the mixedin-slurry process. ATLID (ATmospheric LIDar) is the lidar flown on the multi-instrument Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE). EarthCARE is a joint ESA–JAXA mission that was launched in May 2024. ATLID is a three-channel, linearly polarized, high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) system operating at 355 nm. Cloud and aerosol optical properties are key EarthCARE products. This paper provides an overview of the ATLID Level 2a (L2a; i.e., single instrument) retrieval algorithms being developed and implemented in order to derive cloud and aerosol optical properties. The L2a lidar algorithms that retrieve the aerosol and cloud optical property profiles and classify the detected targets are grouped together in the so-called A-PRO (ATLID-profile) processor. The A-PRO processor produces the ATLID L2a aerosol product (A-AER); the extinction, backscatter, and depolarization product (A-EBD); the ATLID L2a target classification product (A-TC); and the ATLID L2a ice microphysical estimation product (A-ICE). This study explored the fascinating field of high-performance nanoscale metallic multilayer composites, focusing on their magnetic, optical, and radiation tolerance properties, as well as their thermal and electrical properties. In general, nanoscale metallic multilayer composites have a wide range of outstanding properties, which differ greatly from those observed in monolithic films. Their exceptional properties are primarily due to the large number of interfaces and nanoscale layer thicknesses. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and experimental data, this paper highlights the remarkable performance enhancements achieved by the precise control of layer thicknesses and interfaces in these composites. Furthermore, it will discuss the underlying mechanisms responsible for their exceptional properties and provide insights into future research directions in this rapidly evolving field. Many studies have investigated these materials, focusing on their magnetic, mechanical, optical, or radiation-tolerance properties. This paper summarizes the findings in each area, including a description of the general attributes, the adopted synthesis methods, and the most common characterization techniques used. The paper also covers related experimental data, as well as existing and promising applications. The paper also covers other phenomena of interest, such as thermal stability studies, self-propagating reactions, and the progression from nanomultilayers to amorphous and/or crystalline alloys. The ability to auto-generate databases of optical properties holds great potential for advancing optical research, especially with regards to the data-driven discovery of optical materials. An optical property database of refractive indices and dielectric constants is presented, which comprises a total of 49,076 refractive index and 60,804 dielectric constant data records on 11,054 unique chemicals. The database was auto-generated using the state-of-the-art natural language processing software, ChemDataExtractor, using a corpus of 388,461 scientific papers. The data repository offers a representative overview of the information on linear optical properties that resides in scientific papers from the past 30 years. Public availability of these data will enable a quick search for the optical property of certain materials. The large size of this repository will accelerate data-driven research on the design and prediction of optical materials and their properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first auto-generated database of optical properties from a large number of scientific papers. We provide a web interface to aid the use of our database. A previous study (Paper I) investigated the polarization properties of a variety of simple convex grain shapes, some of which were found to be consistent with the observed polarization properties of interstellar dust from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared. Here, we study the optical properties of 45 nonconvex shapes, all aggregates of N equal-sized spheres. We consider N = 2, N = 3, and N = 256 random aggregates obtained from three different aggregation schemes. We also consider "trimmed" N = 256 aggregates obtained by systematically trimming initially random aggregates to increase either flattening or elongation. The "macroporosities" of the studied aggregates range from P macro = 0.18 (for the N = 2 bisphere) to P macro ≈ 0.85 (for the N = 256 "BA" aggregates). The only aggregates consistent with observations of starlight polarization and polarized thermal emission are shapes that have been trimmed to increase their asymmetry. If interstellar grains are high-porosity aggregates, there must be processes causing extreme elongation or flattening; if not, interstellar grains must be dominated by fairly compact structures, with at most moderate porosities. The ratio of polarization in the 10 μ m silicate feature to starlight polarization in the optical is shown to be insensitive to porosity and shape. X-ray scattering may be the best tool to determine the porosity of interstellar grains. We propose that modest porosities of interstellar grains could be the result of "photolytic densification." Despite this growth, few systematic reviews of this field exist. Therefore, in this paper, we offer a comprehensive analysis based on 30,212 publications spanning the years 1990 to 2022, providing valuable insights. We collected and analyzed fundamental information such as publication year, country, affiliation, journal, and author details. Through co-occurrence analysis, we identified country and author partnerships, while co-citation analysis revealed the influence of journals, authors, and documents. We employed keywords to explore the evolution of hydrological phenomena and study areas, using burst analysis to predict trends and frontiers. We discovered exponential growth in this field with a closer integration of hydrological phenomena and Earth observation techniques. The research focus has shifted from large glaciers to encompass large river basins and the Tibetan Plateau. Long-term research attention has been dedicated to optical properties, sea level, and satellite gravity. The adoption of automatic image recognition and processing, enabled by deep learning and artificial intelligence, has opened new interdisciplinary avenues. The results of the study emphasize the significance of long-term, stable, and accurate global observation and monitoring of inland water, particularly in the context of cloud computing and big data. Measuring the optical properties of highly diffuse materials is a challenge as it could be related to the white colour or an oversaturation of pixels in the acquisition system. We used a spatially resolved method and adapted a nonlinear trust-region algorithm to the fit Farrell diffusion theory model. We established an inversion method to estimate two optical properties of a material through a single reflectance measurement: the absorption and the reduced scattering coefficient. We demonstrate the validity of our method by comparing results obtained on milk samples, with a good fitting and a retrieval of linear correlations with the fat content, given by R 2 scores over 0.94 with low p-values. The values of absorption coefficients retrieved vary between 1 × 10 − 3 and 8 × 10 − 3 mm − 1 , whilst the values of the scattering coefficients obtained from our method are between 3 and 8 mm − 1 depending on the percentage of fat in the milk sample, and under the assumption of the anisotropy factor g > 0.8 . We also measured and analyzed the results on white paint and paper, although the paper results were difficult to relate to indicators. The new-generation atmospheric environment monitoring satellite DQ-1, launched successfully in April 2022, carries the Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL), which is capable of globally profiling aerosol and cloud optical properties with high accuracy. The ACDL/DQ-1 is a high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) that separates molecular backscatter signals using an iodine filter and has 532 nm polarization detection and dual-wavelength detection at 532 and 1064 nm, which can be utilized to derive aerosol optical properties. The methods have been specifically developed for data processing and optical property retrieval according to the specific characteristics of the ACDL system and are introduced in detail in this paper. Considering the different signal characteristics and different background noise behaviors of each channel during daytime and nighttime, the procedures of data pre-processing, denoising process and quality control are applied to the original measurement signals. The aerosol and cloud optical property products of the ACDL/DQ-1, including the total depolarization ratio, backscatter coefficient, extinction coefficient, lidar ratio and color ratio, can be calculated by the retrieval algorithms presented in this paper. Two measurement cases with use of the ACDL/DQ-1 on 27 June 2022 and the global averaged aerosol optical depth (AOD) from 1 June to 4 August 2022 are provided and analyzed, demonstrating the measurement capability of the ACDL/DQ-1. Thin metal layers such as silver (Ag) are being utilized for various optical and plasmonic applications as well as for electrical purposes, e.g., as transparent electrodes in display devices or solar cells. This paper focuses on optical MEMS applications such as the Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI). Within such filters, reflector materials such as distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) or subwavelength gratings (SWGs) have been widely used so far, whereas metallic thin films (MTFs) were limited in application due to their comparatively higher absorption. In this paper, thin sputtered Ag layers with thicknesses of 20, 40 and 60 nm on glass substrates have been investigated, and it is shown that the absorption is very low in the visible spectral range (VIS) and increases only in near-infrared (NIR) with increasing wavelength. Thus, we consider Ag-thin layers to be an interesting reflector material at least for the VIS range, which can be easily fabricated and integrated. However, Ag is not inert and stable when exposed to the atmosphere. Hence, it needs a passivation material. For this purpose, AlN has been chosen in this contribution, which can be deposited by sputtering as well. In this contribution, we have chosen thin AlN layers for this purpose, which can also be deposited by sputtering. Thus, various AlN/Ag/AlN-reflector stacks were created and patterned by lift-off technology preferably. The fabricated reflectors were characterized with respect to adhesion, stress, cohesion, homogeneity, and most importantly, their optical properties. It was found that the thickness of the AlN can be used to adjust the reflectance–transmittance ratio in the VIS range, and influences the adsorption in the NIR range as well. Based on the measured values of the reflectors with 40 nm Ag, an exemplary transmission filter characteristics has been predicted for a wavelength range from 400 to 800 nm. This paper explores a new approach to improving satellite measurements of cloud optical thickness and droplet size by considering the radiative impacts of horizontal heterogeneity in boundary-layer cumulus clouds. In contrast to the usual bottom-up approach that retrieves cloud properties for individual pixels and subsequently compiles large-scale statistics, the proposed top-down approach first determines the effect of 3D heterogeneity on large-scale cloud statistics and then distributes the overall effects to individual pixels. The potential of this approach is explored by applying a regression-based scheme to a simulated dataset containing over 3000 scenes generated through large eddy simulations. The results show that the new approach can greatly reduce the errors in widely used bispectral retrievals that assume horizontal homogeneity. Errors in large-scale mean values and cloud variability are typically reduced by factors of two to four for 1 km resolution retrievals—and the reductions remain significant even for a 4 km resolution. The calculations also reveal that over vegetation heterogeneity-caused droplet size retrieval biases are often opposite to the biases found over oceans. The raw data from ground-based telescopic optical observations serve as a key foundation for the analysis and identification of optical scattering properties of space objects, providing an essential guarantee for object identification and state prediction efforts. In this paper, a spatial object optical characterization model based on Augmented Implicit Neural Representations (AINRs) is proposed. This model utilizes a neural implicit function to delineate the relationship between the geometric observation model and the apparent magnitude arising from sunlight reflected off the object's surface. Combining the dual advantages of data-driven and physical-driven, a novel pre-training procedure method based on transfer learning is designed. Taking omnidirectional angle simulation data as the basic training dataset and further introducing it with real observational data from ground stations, the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) parameters of the model undergo constant refinement. Pre-fitting experiments on the newly developed S−net, R−net, and F−net models are conducted with a quantitative analysis of errors and a comparative assessment of evaluation indexes. The experiment demonstrates that the proposed F−net model consistently maintains a prediction error for satellite surface magnitude values within 0.2 m V , outperforming the other two models. The primary goal of this paper is to study a few advantages of bulk nanoparticles of Cu-doped SnO2 using the solid-state reaction method. Many innovative methods were employed to evaluate the special tuning of the bandgap and other structural and morphological properties of the material. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) confirmed that tin oxide has a rutile-type tetragonal-shaped structure with space group P42 / mnm. The average crystallite size was calculated which was found to increase from 53 to 80 nm by increasing the Cu-doping from x = 0 to x = 0.30. SEM images specified that nanoparticles are inhomogeneous and densely close to each other and the average particle size was found to be in the range of ~225–430 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed the grains present in a few cubic and spherical shapes and grain size was increased (~20–90 nm) with doping of copper in the SnO2 lattice. UV–Vis spectroscopy showed that the band gap increased from 3.531 to 3.701 eV for pure SnO2 and Cu-doped SnO2, respectively. XPS identified the electronic state of Sn as well as Cu atoms as 4 + and 2 + , respectively. Raman spectroscopy showed that only three vibrational modes, i.e., A1g, B2g and doubly degenerate Eg, exist in a sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recreating cerebral tissue using a tissue-mimicking phantom is valuable because it provides a tool for studying physiological and biological processes related to tissues without the necessity of performing the study directly in the tissue or even in a patient. The reproduction of the optical properties allows investigation in areas such as imaging, optics, and ultrasound, among others. This paper presents a methodology for manufacturing agarose-based phantoms that mimic the optical characteristics of brain tissue using scattering and absorbing agents and proposes combinations of these agents to recreate the healthy brain tissue optical coefficients within the wavelength range of 350 to 500 nm. The results of the characterization of the manufactured phantoms propose ideal combinations of the used materials for their use in controlled environment experiments in the UV range, following a cost-effective methodology. The optical properties of an off-axis integrated cavity system are influenced by both structural deformation and thermal deformation. In this paper, the finite element simulation and analysis software COMSOL multiphysics was used to numerically simulate the optical system. By coupling geometric optics, solid mechanics, and solid heat transfer and conducting parametric temperature scanning, a multiphysics simulation of the off-axis integrated cavity optical sensing system was achieved. The effects of different temperature conditions on the stress field, displacement field, and optical mirrors were analyzed, and changes in optical properties were assessed using ray trajectories and point diagrams. Additionally, optical simulation software was used to simulate and optimize the experimental optical path, obtaining the distribution of light spots on the detector surface. Optical device design is typically an iterative optimization process based on a good initial guess from prior reports. Optical properties databases are useful in this process but difficult to compile because their parsing requires finding relevant papers and manually converting graphical emissivity curves to data tables. Here, we present two contributions: one is a dataset of thermal emissivity records with design-related parameters, and the other is a software tool for automated colored curve data extraction from scientific plots. We manually collected 64 papers with 176 figures reporting thermal emissivity and automatically retrieved 153 colored curve data records. The automated figure analysis software pipeline uses Faster R-CNN for axes and legend object detection, EasyOCR for axes numbering recognition, and k-means clustering for colored curve retrieval. Additionally, we manually extracted geometry, materials, and method information from the text to add necessary metadata to each emissivity curve. Finally, we analyzed the dataset to determine the dominant classes of emissivity curves and determine the underlying design parameters leading to a type of emissivity profile. The paper proposes an equivalent optical scheme of an in-line digital holographic system for particle recording and a mathematical model that establishes a one-to-one correspondence between the dimensional and spatial parameters of a digital holographic image of a particle and the imaged particle itself. The values of the model coefficients used to determine the real size and longitudinal coordinate of a particle according to its holographic image are found by calibration. The model was tested in field and laboratory conditions to calibrate a submersible digital holographic camera designed to study plankton in its habitat. It was shown that four calibration measurements are sufficient enough to determine the model coefficients, and the developed design of the submersible digital holographic camera makes it possible to perform these measurements during the recording of each hologram. In addition, this neither requires data on the refractive index of the medium with particles nor on the parameters of the optical elements of the scheme. The paper presents the results of marine experiments in the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea, as well as in fresh water in laboratory conditions and in Lake Baikal. The error in measuring the particle size in seawater without the use of the model is 53.8%, while the error in determining their longitudinal coordinates is 79.3%. In fresh water, the same errors were 59% and 54.5%, respectively. The error in determining the position of a particle with the use of the designed mathematical model does not exceed 1.5%, and the error in determining the size is 4.8%. The model is sensitive to changes in the optical properties of the medium, so it is necessary to perform calibration in each water area, and one calibration is quite sufficient within the same water area. In this paper, the results of studies on sub-micrometer planar structures used for aimed frequency-dependent electromagnetic radiation dissipation are presented. The proposed specific geometry of periodic parts of surface structures should enable the occurrence of phenomena related to selective reflectance and interference. The inner porous structure should lead to the formation of destructive interference of electromagnetic radiation and its dissipation. The investigated structures were irradiated by a Gaussian-type radiation source. The propagation was analyzed using the MEEP software package for electromagnetic simulation via the finite-difference time-domain method. The reflectance spectra were obtained by the Fourier transform of the response to the short pulse. The obtained results showed that the surface structures are mainly responsible for reflected electromagnetic spectrum composition, while the porous parts were responsible for thermal radiation dissipation. In this paper, we propose a fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) multiplexing system based on the fluorogen-activating protein FAST. This genetically encoded fluorescent labeling platform employs FAST mutants that activate the same fluorogen but provide different fluorescence lifetimes for each specific protein-dye pair. All the proposed probes with varying lifetimes possess nearly identical and the smallest-in-class size, along with quite similar steady-state optical properties. In live mammalian cells, we target these chemogenetic tags to two intracellular structures simultaneously, where their fluorescence signals are clearly distinguished by FLIM. Due to the unique structure of certain fluorogens under study, their complexes with FAST mutants display a monophasic fluorescence decay, which may facilitate enhanced multiplexing efficiency by reducing signal cross-talks and providing optimal prerequisites for signal separation upon co-localized and/or spatially overlapped labeling. A genetically encoded labeling system uses smallest-in-class fluorogen-activating protein tags for time-resolved fluorescence multiplexed cellular imaging, offering monoexponential decay and potential for sophisticated fluorescence lifetime analysis. Phase contrast is widely used in all fields for visualization of the internal structure of objects using Xray radiation. The paper proposes a new approach to modeling a phase-contrast X-ray image by the method of free propagation using the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory. A simple calculation model was developed, which makes it possible to determine the value of the change in the intensity of X-rays on three-dimensional models of objects of arbitrary shape with macroscopic dimensions. It also allows you to establish the conditions for observing a contrast image with known characteristics of the detector system and the intensity of the radiation source. The possibility of obtaining clear images of objects with small decrements of refraction of matter, determining their geometric dimensions and thickness was shown. A method of calculating the optical properties of metal alloys in the X-ray range has been developed. The approaches presented in the paper can be useful to developers of compact devices for detecting structural inhomogeneities inside the studied objects by a non-destructive method. This paper presents the design and fabrication of new types of polymer-based cantilevers for atomic force microscopy. The design and fabrication are aimed at the capability of 3D laser microprinting technology based on two-photon polymerization on a standard silicon substrate. IP-Dip commercial material from the Nanoscribe company was used for the fabrication of the designed cantilevers. The fabricated microprinted cantilevers facilitate precise manipulation at the nanoscopic scale, which is essential for studying nanomaterials' mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. The cantilevers' flexibility allows for the integration of functional elements such as piezoelectric layers and optical fibers, enabling combined measurements of multiple physical parameters. Various cantilever geometries, including rectangular and V-shaped, are examined, and their resonance frequencies are calculated. The experimental process involves preparing the cantilevers on a silicon substrate and coating them with aluminum for enhanced reflectivity and conductivity. Scanning electron microscope analysis documents the precise form of prepared polymer cantilevers. The functionality of the probes is validated by scanning a step-height standard grating. This study demonstrates the versatility and precision of the fabricated cantilevers, showcasing their potential for large-area scans, living cell investigation, and diverse nanotechnology applications. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging imaging technique that offers real-time, non-invasive, and radiation-free measurements of optical tissue properties. However, image quality degradation due to factors such as non-ideal signal detection hampers its clinical applicability. To address this challenge, this paper proposes an algorithm for super-resolution reconstruction and segmentation based on deep learning. The proposed enhanced deep super-resolution minimalistic network (EDSR-M) not only mitigates the shortcomings of the original algorithm regarding computational complexity and parameter count but also employs residual learning and attention mechanisms to extract image features and enhance image details, thereby achieving high-quality reconstruction of PAI. DeepLabV3+ is used to segment the images before and after reconstruction to verify the network reconstruction performance. The experimental results demonstrate average improvements of 19.76% in peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 4.80% in structural similarity index (SSIM) for the reconstructed images compared to those of their pre-reconstructed counterparts. Additionally, mean accuracy, mean intersection and union ratio (IoU), and mean boundary F1 score (BFScore) for segmentation showed enhancements of 8.27%, 6.20%, and 6.28%, respectively.
