It is worth noting that children’s literature is one of the rapidly growing fields in the literature on one hand, but on the other hand, it is also the most argumentative area of study among critics and all interested persons. The debatable feature of this literary genre underlies the broad scope of the literary texts that can include under its umbrella; fairy tales, short stories, novels, poems, and picture books. Additionally, these books’ commercial success and readability can have a long-lasting influence, and we can trace these impacts from one generation to another and from one culture to another. These books occupy a vital position in the scholar’s discussion to examine the suitability and goodness of their content to fit the mentality of children. No one can deny these books’ profound impacts on the young generation’s personal development, but we must admit that other impacts may scratch this bright image of these memorable books. Starting with a reflection on the motif of abandonment in fairy tales, this paper aims to investigate its persistence in modern and contemporary children’s literature, with particular reference to rewritings and revisitations of classical fairy tales through the special textuality of the picture book. Abandonment thus becomes a key concept, among others, in retracing, from a historiographical perspective, the plots of a lost childhood, passed down to us from ancient times, among persistences and distortions that update its meaning. Antonio Rubino’s novel Viperetta (1919) is the mature work of an author already known in the context of children’s literature mainly for his activity as an illustrator for some covers of “Il giornalino della Domenica” and drawings for Andersen’s fairy tales and as a contributor to the “Corriere dei Piccoli”. In this context, Viperetta immediately presents itself as an editorial object of particular cultural-historical interest, both because of the specific relationship that Rubino establishes between the textual part and the body of the images, and because it is presented as a coming-of-age novel, with a female protagonist, which, fitting into the tradition of the marvelous journey to the moon, takes on the contours of a rite of passage, turning the protagonist into a fairy-tale child. The article purports to emphasize these aspects, trying to show how Viperetta bases on these two elements the distinctive features of its originality and narrative power, still alive after more than a hundred years. In his 1952 essay "On Three Ways of Writing for Children", C. S. Lewis discusses three approaches to writing children's literature and defends "that particular type of children's story which is dearest to my own taste, the fantasy or fairy tale" from the charge that it is "childish". In this paper, I define Christian apologetics as "the art and science of persuasively communicating and advocating Christian spirituality across spiritualties, through the responsible use of rhetoric, as being objectively beautiful, good and true/reasonable" and see how Lewis' advice about the rhetoric of children's stories can be generalized and applied to the discipline of Christian apologetics. In particular, many atheists charge Christian Spirituality with being childish. For example, British atheist Richard Dawkins says that religious people "have their Bronze Age myths, medieval superstitions and childish wishful thinking" (Dawkins, Scientific American). Describing his own childhood, Dawkins says: "I think I did believe it up to the age of eight or nine, when preachers said if you really, really pray for something it can happen. Even moving mountains, I believed it could really happen... I grew up. I put away childish things." (Dawkins, "Claims Fairy Tales Are Harmful To Children") In this paper I explore how the dialectical moves made by Lewis in "On Three Ways of Writing for Children" can shape a rational response to such rhetoric.
