Accurately predicting the next track point of vehicle travel is crucial for various Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications, such as travel behavior studies, traffic control, and traffic congestion monitoring. Recent works on trajectory prediction follow a paradigm that first represents the raw trajectory and subsequently makes predictions based on that representation. Currently, trajectory representation methods tend to project trajectory points to road networks by map matching and represent trajectories based on the representation of matched roads. However, precisely matching trajectories to roads is a challenge in ITS, as the matching precision is greatly affected by the quality of the trajectory. Meanwhile, since it is difficult to discern whether trajectory matching results are accurate or confounded, how to effectively utilize this type of uncertain geographic context information is also a challenge, which is defined as the Uncertain Geographic Context Problem (UGCoP) in geographic information science. Therefore, we propose a flexible strategy of subgraph learning, referred to as SLM, for predicting the next track point of vehicles. Specifically, a subgraph generation module is first proposed to extract topology contextual information of the roads around historical trajectory points. Secondly, a subgraph learning module is designed to learn rich spatial and temporal features from generated subgraphs. Finally, the extracted spatiotemporal features will be fed into a prediction module to predict the next track points of vehicles on road networks. Our model enables the effective utilization of uncertain geographic context information of trajectories on road networks while avoiding the error brought by map matching. Short-time traffic flow prediction can not only help urban traffic management to complete the control and induce but also reduce the degree of urban congestion and improve the efficiency of urban operation. At the same time, improving the effect of short-time traffic flow prediction is one of the key points of traffic control and guidance development. Currently, there are many different models for short-term traffic flow prediction, and different prediction models have their different advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we review the current status of research on short-time traffic flow prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network: first, we analyze the research method in this paper; second, we briefly review the research and application effects of common prediction methods in traffic flow prediction; finally, the optimization method based on LSTM and its application effect are summarized and analyzed from the aspect of LSTM network and its combination model. Global urbanization and increasing traffic volume have intensified traffic congestion throughout transportation infrastructure, particularly at toll plazas, highlighting the critical need to implement proactive transportation infrastructure solutions. Traditional toll plaza management approaches, often relying on manual interventions, suffer from inefficiencies that fail to adapt to dynamic traffic flow and are unable to produce preemptive control strategies, resulting in prolonged queues, extended travel times, and adverse environmental effects. This study proposes a proactive traffic control strategy using advanced technologies to combat toll plaza congestion and optimize traffic management. The approach involves deep learning convolutional neural network models (YOLOv7–Deep SORT) for vehicle counting and an extended short-term memory model for short-term arrival rate prediction. When projected arrival rates exceed a threshold, the strategy proactively activates variable speed limits (VSLs) and ramp metering (RM) strategies during peak hours. The novelty of this study lies in its predictive and adaptive capabilities, ensuring efficient traffic flow management. Validated through a case study at Ravi Toll Plaza Lahore using PTV VISSIMv7, the proposed method reduces queue length by 57% and vehicle delays by 47% while cutting fuel consumption and pollutant emissions by 28.4% and 34%, respectively. Additionally, by identifying the limitations of conventional approaches, this study presents a novel framework alongside the proposed strategy to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making it easier for toll plaza operators and transportation authorities to adopt and benefit from advanced traffic management techniques. Traffic lights are crucial for urban traffic management, as they significantly impact congestion reduction and travel safety. Traditional methods relying on hand-crafted rules and operator experience are limited in their ability to adapt to changing traffic environments. To address this challenge, we have been exploring intelligent traffic light control using deep reinforcement learning techniques. However, current approaches often suffer from inadequate training data and unstable training processes, leading to suboptimal performance and real-world consequences. In this study, we propose RELight, a novel random ensemble reinforcement learning-based traffic light control framework. RELight effectively utilizes collected empirical data, ensuring a stable and efficient training process. To evaluate the performance of our proposed framework, we conducted a comprehensive set of experiments on a variety of datasets, including four synthetic datasets and a real traffic dataset collected from surveillance cameras at an intersection in Hangzhou, China. Smart cities can effectively improve urban life quality. But, with the rise in population size, there is an increase in the use of vehicles for transportation. In smart city development, traffic control and route planning are the primary tasks to address the problem of travel time estimation. It has become complex due to concerns of wrapped spatio-temporal data on dynamic real-time traffic conditions. The existing methods failed to estimate travel time efficiently due to not considering the spatio-temporal features and lack of computing resources. There is a need for a system like intelligent transportation system to monitor and accurately predict traffic flow to avoid traffic congestion and reduce the impact on the ecological system. This paper developed a novel hybrid deep learning model to estimate optimized travel time and possible trajectories. In this work, U-Net used to reduce the number of feature points for each temporal data and GNN is used to build the graph with connectivity between vehicular nodes. This hybrid model helps us predict traffic flow and aims to estimate accurate travel time from one location (node) to another. The model's performance is evaluated on the standard benchmark datasets Q-Traffic, TaxiBJ, and Chengdu. The experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly improves performance in extracting travel patterns and provides an optimal route with an estimated travel time than existing methods with RMSE 4%, MAE 20.49%, and MAPE 18%. Accurate crowd flow prediction is essential for traffic guidance and traffic control. However, the high nonlinearity, temporal complexity, and spatial complexity that crowd flow data have makes this problem challenging. This research proposes a dynamic graph convolutional network model (Res-DGCN) based on the residual network structure for crowd inflow and outflow prediction in urban areas. Firstly, as the attention layer, the spatio-temporal attention module (SA) is employed for capturing the spatial relationship between the target node and the multi-order adjacent nodes by processing the features of the human flow data. Secondly, a conditional convolution module (SCondConv) is used to enhance the model's capacity for learning about the shifting characteristics of crowd flow to obtain spatial dependence. Finally, we train the model with the Huber loss function to lower the model's sensitivity to outliers and achieve optimal convergence. In two public datasets, the mean absolute error (MAE) of the proposed model is improved by 5.2% and 9.4%, respectively, compared to the baseline models, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is improved by 4.8% and 8.8%, confirming the model's usefulness for crowd flow prediction tasks. The technology that can recognize the license plates of vehicles in real time and manage them automatically is a key element of building an intelligent transportation system. License plate recognition is the most important technique in vehicle image processing used to identify a vehicle. Object recognition using a camera is greatly influenced by environmental factors in which the camera is installed. When the vehicle image is acquired, the image is distorted due to the tilting of the license plate, reflection of light, lighting effects, rainy weather, and nighttime, so that it is difficult to accurately recognize the license plate. In addition, when the geometric distortion of the license plate image or the degradation of the image quality is intensified, it may be more difficult to automatically recognize the license plate image. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a deep learning–based vehicles' license plate recognition method to detect license plate and recognize characters accurately in complex and diverse environments. As a deep learning model, the YOLO model can be used to detect robust license plates in a variety of environments and to recognize characters quickly and accurately. Pedestrian safety has become a critical consideration in developing society especially road traffic, an intelligent transportation need of the hour is the solution left. India tops the world with 11% of global road accidents. With this data, we have moved in the direction of computer vision applications for efficient and accurate pedestrian detection for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The important application of this research is robot development, traffic management and control, unmanned vehicle driving (UVD), intelligent monitoring and surveillance system, and automatic pedestrian detection system. Much research has focused on pedestrian detection, but sustainable solution-driven research must still be required to overcome road accidents. We have proposed a wireless sensor network-based pedestrian detection system that classifies the real-time set of pedestrian activity and samples the reciprocally received signal strength (RSS) from the sensor node. We applied a histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) descriptor algorithm K-nearest neighbor, decision tree and linear support vector machine to measure the performance and prediction of the target. Also, these algorithms have performed a comparative analysis under different aspects. The linear support vector machine algorithm was trained with 481 samples. The performance achieves the accuracy of 98.90%and has accomplished superior results with a maximum precision of 0.99, recall of 0.98, and F-score of 0.95 with 2% error rate. The model's prediction indicates that it can be used in the intelligent transportation system. With the enormous growth in the public and private vehicles fleet, traffic congestion is increasing at a very high rate. To deal with this, an intelligent mechanism is required.Therefore, this work proposes a novel Neuro-fuzzy based intelligent traffic light control system, which accounts for vehicle heterogeneity by dynamically generating traffic light phase duration considering the real-time heterogeneous traffic load. For this purpose, the proposed model establishes peer-to-peer connections among neighboring traffic light junctions to fetch the respective real-time traffic conditions and congestion. A fuzzy membership function is utilized to generate an intelligent traffic light phase duration. Further, to obtain an effective fuzzy membership function input value considering real-time heterogeneous traffic scenarios, an adaptive neural network is utilized. The proposed system adopts three execution modes: Congestion Mode (CM), Priority Mode (PM), and Fair Mode (FM). It automatically activates and switches to the best mode based on the live traffic conditions. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated via a realistic simulation on the Gwalior city map of India using an open-source simulator known as Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). Driven by the massive number of connected vehicles and the stringent requirements of data-intensive applications, logistics transportation systems have evolved to fully comprehend its effectiveness and quality to meet public transportation needs. As a result, to meet public transportation requirements and analyze the data efficiently at the edge of the networks, an advanced artificial intelligent technique needs to be introduced to make the transportation system intelligent by supporting efficient decision making, intelligent traffic control, and intrusion and misuse detection.Motivated by the challenges mentioned above, in this paper, we develop a logistic agent-based model for analyzing public transports such as cars, bus or trains in the intelligent transportation system. The intelligent logistic framework is built on a parallel neural network structure, known as a Swarm-Neural Network (SWNN). The proposed SWNN model analyzes the sensory data and recognizes the public transportation at the edge of the networks. The SWNN model is constructed so that it fits within the intelligent logistic transportation framework, and the proposed model shortens the transit time of every small-scale logistics delivery to its destination. The performance of the proposed SWNN model is evaluated using a standard TMD dataset, where the SWNN model is trained using data, retrieved multiple sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and audio sensors. The features of the sensory data are extracted based on a 5-s time interval. The performance of the proposed SWNN model is studied over various standard machine learning techniques such as Random Forest, XGBoost, and Decision Tree. One of the most serious and worsening problems in much of the world is traffic congestion, which represents an undoubted menace to the quality of urban life, including wasting of time, and environmental pollution. Therefore, this study proposes a new dynamic cooperative traffic control algorithm based on Vehicle-to-Infrastructure connections to solve this problem. The proposed model contains three parts. First of all, when each vehicle enters the communication zone, it sends its estimated range of arrival time to the control center in the intersection; then the optimal passing sequence is calculated in the control center by dynamically grouping the compatible trajectories with the respect of the related safety constraints; finally, each vehicle optimizes its appropriate speed profile based on the given optimal time and speed to enter the intersection, which is sent by the control center. Several simulation cases are executed for different traffic volumes, whose results prove that vehicles under the proposed algorithm can pass the intersection with less travel time compared with traditional traffic control methods and other algorithms. Crowd flow prediction is one of the most remarkable issues in a wide range of areas, from traffic control to public safety, and aims to forecast the inflow and outflow of crowds in each region of a city. Most existing studies adopt CNN and its variants to discover the spatial patterns of grid maps (each grid represents a region) while ignoring the correlation between distant regions that may share similar temporal patterns. In this paper, we propose a gnn-based prediction method, called STGs, for crowd flow prediction, which jointly constructs spatial and temporal graphs from grid maps and then implements graph neural networks to directly capture the relationship between regions. Additionally, we introduce a gated fusion mechanism to combine spatial and temporal embedding from the corresponding graph, which further improves the performance of our STGs. We conduct numerical experiments to compare STGs with other baseline models using two real-world datasets, BikeNYC and TLC. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our STGs model; specifically, our model reduces the mean absolute error (MAE) of crowd flow prediction by approximately 7-8% compared to state-of-the-art baselines. Traffic congestion alleviation around intersections has been a growing challenge, and a competent traffic signal control scheme plays a pivotal role in intelligent transportation systems. Recent studies using deep reinforcement learning techniques have shown promising results for traffic signal control, but they only focus on extracting features from traffic conditions of isolated or adjacent intersections. In this work, we employed navigation information for traffic signal control, greatly enriching the features for traffic signal control with deep reinforcement learning. In addition, we are the first to propose a novel scheme DeepNavi to exploit the temporal-spatial relations from numerous navigation routes and extract dynamic real-time and future traffic features. We tested our scheme on a challenging real-world traffic dataset with 16 intersections in a residential district of Hangzhou, China. Extensive experiments were conducted and the results demonstrated that our DeepNavi scheme achieves superior performance over five popular and state-of-the-art baseline methods on different metrics, including queue length, speed, travel time and accumulative waiting time. In addition, with our method, vehicles suffer the least red lights and enjoy the most green waves, which further validates that our scheme greatly relieves the congestion and provides excellent experience for drivers. Simulations with different penetration levels of navigation routes showed that even with only part of navigation routes available in the traffic network, our scheme can obtain superior performance, further demonstrating the effectiveness and feasibility of DeepNavi. The traffic in urban areas is primarily controlled by traffic lights, contributing to the excessive, if not properly installed, long waiting times for vehicles. The condition is compounded by the increasing number of road accidents involving pedestrians in cities across the world. Thus, this work presents an integrated tripartite module for an intelligent traffic light system. This system has enough ingredients for success that can solve the above challenges. The proposed system has three modules: the intelligent visual monitoring module, intelligent traffic light control module, and the intelligent recommendation module for emergency vehicles. The monitor module is a visual module capable of identifying the conditions of traffic in the streets. The intelligent traffic light control module configures many intersections in a city to improve the flow of vehicles. Finally, the intelligent recommendation module for emergency vehicles offers an optimal path for emergency vehicles. The evaluation of the proposed system has been carried out in Al-Sader city/Bagdad/Iraq. The intelligent recommendation module for the emergency vehicles module shows that the optimization rate average for the optimal path was in range 67.13% to 92%, where the intelligent traffic light control module shows that the optimization ratio was in range 86% to 91.8%. Recently, the intelligent traffic control system and its uncertainty analysis are considered one of the hot spots for utilizing the available techniques. It became more essential when the automatic car, electric vehicle, and other smart cars have introduced the transportation. To control the traffic accident and smooth road services an intelligent traffic control system required. It will be also useful in decreasing the time, reaction time, and efficiency of traffic. However, the problem arises while characterization of true, false or uncertain regions of traffic flow and its future approximation. To deal with this issue some available mathematical technique for traffic flow using rough set, fuzzy rough set, and its extension with the neutrosophic set is discussed in this paper. Some of the papers related to graphical visualization of traffic flow is also discussed for further improvement. The rough set theory can be useful for dealing the uncertain, incomplete, and indeterminate data set. Hence, the hybridization of the neutrosophic set and rough can be considered one of the efficient tools for intelligent traffic control and its approximation via automatic red, green and yellow lights. Transitions between two lanes often have a significant impact on various forms of road traffic. To address this problem, we have developed a two-lane asymmetric simple exclusion process model and two hypothetical traffic control strategies, to simulate a futuristic scenario where the timing and location of transitions between two lanes are highly controlled. Various scenarios were proposed to study the effectiveness of these control strategies. An optimized control strategy, whose parameters were determined through an optimization algorithm, is confirmed to effectively maximize the average traffic flow. Improvement of traffic signal control (TSC) efficiency has been found to lead to improved urban transportation and enhanced quality of life. Recently, the use of reinforcement learning (RL) in various areas of TSC has gained significant traction; thus, we conducted a systematic literature review as a systematic, comprehensive, and reproducible review to dissect all the existing research that applied RL in the network-level TSC domain, called as RL in NTSC or RL-NTSC for brevity. The review only targeted the network-level articles that tested the proposed methods in networks with two or more intersections. This review covers 160 peer-reviewed articles from 30 countries published from 1994 to March 2020. The goal of this study is to provide the research community with statistical and conceptual knowledge, summarize existence evidence, characterize RL applications in NTSC domains, explore all applied methods and major first events in the defined scope, and identify areas for further research based on the explored research problems in current research. We analyzed the extracted data from the included articles in the following seven categories: (i) publication and authors' data, (ii) method identification and analysis, (iii) environment attributes and traffic simulation, (iv) application domains of RL-NTSC, (v) major first events of RL-NTSC and authors' key statements, (vi) code availability, and (vii) evaluation. This paper provides a comprehensive view of the past 26 years of research on applying RL to NTSC. Nowadays, many cities have problems with traffic congestion at certain peak hours, which produces more pollution, noise and stress for citizens. Neural networks (NN) and machine-learning (ML) approaches are increasingly used to solve real-world problems, overcoming analytical and statistical methods, due to their ability to deal with dynamic behavior over time and with a large number of parameters in massive data. In this paper, machine-learning (ML) and deep-learning (DL) algorithms are proposed for predicting traffic flow at an intersection, thus laying the groundwork for adaptive traffic control, either by remote control of traffic lights or by applying an algorithm that adjusts the timing according to the predicted flow. Therefore, this work only focuses on traffic flow prediction. Two public datasets are used to train, validate and test the proposed ML and DL models. The first one contains the number of vehicles sampled every five minutes at six intersections for 56 days using different sensors. For this research, four of the six intersections are used to train the ML and DL models. The Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP-NN) obtained better results (R-Squared and EV score of 0.93) and took less training time, followed closely by Gradient Boosting then Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), with good metrics results but the longer training time, and finally Random Forest, Linear Regression and Stochastic Gradient. In this paper, the MCS-based Dynamic Traffic Efficiency Framework (MCS-DTEF) for traffic congestion control is presented. The basic characteristics of MCS-DTEF are: traffic detection can be performed without deploying sensor devices on both sides of the road. The traffic data can be collected in real time, traffic flow can be predicted and managed according to current situations which reducing fuel consumption and driving time. Simulation of Urban Mobility simulator is used for evaluation. Meaningful and reliable statistical data is obtained by the traffic flow which is built according to Normal Traffic Conditions (NTC's) in the first scenario. In the second simulation scenario, the MCS-DTEF mechanism is applied to assign a time slot to a requested vehicle and dynamically allocate the fastest path to each vehicle which is introduced to avoid traffic congestion. To validate the results of the proposed framework technique by comparing with NTC's and real-world traffic flow in three different situations morning, afternoon and evening are examined and tested to explore the traffic usage parameter. The results show that the MCS-DTEF strategy demonstrates significantly improved traffic flow performance in terms of reducing time to destination, fuel consumption and increased vehicle average speed.
