From 1950 onwards, under the apartheid regime's Group Areas Act, hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes across South Africa's cities. While the removals from some areas, notably District Six in Cape Town, are well documented and memorialised, many others have largely been erased from public memory. In a context of burgeoning research into issues of spatial justice in Southern cities, this paper puts forward the argument that the concepts and practice of memory and memorialising in urban spaces deserve more attention. Specifically, we suggest that the relationships between space and memory, shaped by collective, public acts of remembering and forgetting, can expand our understanding of what constitutes spatial justice in our cities. Reflecting on a research project conducted in Lower Claremont, a racially mixed, middle‐class suburb in Cape Town that was declared White in 1969 and subsequently dubbed Harfield Village, we explore some of the ways in which remembering and forgetting take place on the urban scale, and their implications for imagining just cities. We ask, too, what possibilities exist for active remembering in this place and in similarly ordinary city spaces. Analysing oral histories from former residents and interviews with current occupants of the neighbourhood, we open up some of the complications in surfacing forgotten stories and creating landscapes of memory. In the final section of the paper we reflect on an art installation that formed part of the research project, and suggest some possibilities for active memory work in our urban spaces. After the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, various projects have been pushed forward for early restoration while they do not necessarily restore former townscapes which were entirely transformed. Some local people are worried about losing their memories of hometown in course of recovery. This essay examines, how they could retrieve and transmit memories of their lost towns to next generations through the workshops to build 1:500 restoration models on the central districts (Machikata area) at Otsuchi town in Iwate prefecture. Summary: This piece of creative nonfiction prose explores memory, landscape, and materiality in the "Red Zone" of Christchurch (Ōtautahi), New Zealand—a formerly residential area devastated by an earthquake in 2011 and subsequently turned into a public green space. The writing is informed by my intermittent ethnographic fieldwork in Christchurch—a European settler‐colonial city established on Ngāi Tahu (indigenous Māori) lands—which has spanned ten years. In recent trips, influenced by a phenomenological lens and sensory methodologies, I began to incorporate walking into my research practice. The walk described in this piece took place on the tenth anniversary of the deadly quake. It begins at the earthquake memorial site in the middle of the urban center, then moves from the Otakaro River Corridor in the Eastern suburbs back towards the city. The journey enables thinking about ruins, hauntings, and the tension between official and alternative narratives of progress—acknowledging the material agencies of the more‐than‐human world as part of this. I reflect on the accesses granted by walking, connecting grief and trauma to dis/oriented movement, materiality, and texture; considering the possibilities for people to work on, as well as walk on, these collective landscapes of memory.
