Numerous wearable devices have been applied in people's daily lives. As the core component of wearable devices, flexible pressure sensors play an especially important role in various fields because of their excellent adaptability to the environment. Various high‐performance flexible pressure sensors have been developed, and much research is still being conducted to increase the performance of flexible pressure sensors. A variety of materials with excellent properties have been created, many advanced manufacturing methods have been developed, and different microstructures have been attempted and applied to flexible pressure sensors. To optimize the performance of sensors, flexible pressure sensors with bionic microstructures from the perspective of bionics have attracted increasing attention, which can bring new designs and improve the performance. This paper mainly summarizes various kinds of flexible pressure sensors with bionic structures developed in recent years. The main contents include the following parts: an introduction to the current state‐of‐the‐art flexible pressure sensors; substrate and active materials, sensing mechanisms, key parameters, and sensitivity optimization strategies; various kinds of bionic microstructures applied to flexible pressure sensors and characterization of the performance; applications of flexible pressure sensors; and prospects and potential challenges of flexible pressure sensors. COVID‐19 can be seen as feedback for anthropocentric social, economic and environmental decision‐making that disrespects other living systems. The paper makes a case that respects for multiple species, and the onus of beneficence should be applied to all living systems of which we are a strand. Human beings are not exceptional insofar as they are able to communicate, make decisions, demonstrate a sense of community and show empathy or to make political calculations. What does this mean for the way we live our lives? Respect for persons needs to include animals, plants and the earth. It is time to rethink rights and responsibilities to protect habitat. Mechanistic insight into ageing may empower prolonging the lifespan of humans; however, a complete understanding of this process is still lacking despite a plethora of ageing theories. In order to address this, we investigated the association of lifespan with eight phenotypic traits, that is, litter size, body mass, female and male sexual maturity, somatic mutation, heart, respiratory, and metabolic rate. In support of the somatic mutation theory, we analysed 15 mammalian species and their whole‐genome sequencing deriving somatic mutation rate, which displayed the strongest negative correlation with lifespan. All remaining phenotypic traits showed almost equivalent strong associations across this mammalian cohort, however, resting heart rate explained additional variance in lifespan. Integrating somatic mutation and resting heart rate boosted the prediction of lifespan, thus highlighting that resting heart rate may either directly influence lifespan, or represents an epiphenomenon for additional lower‐level mechanisms, for example, metabolic rate, that are associated with lifespan. Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a severe zoonotic mosquito‐borne disease that represents an important threat to human and animal health, with major public health and socioeconomic impacts. This disease is endemic throughout many African countries and the Arabian Peninsula. This systematic review with meta‐analysis was conducted to determine the RVF prevalence in humans, mosquitoes and other animal species in Africa. The review also provides contemporary data on RVF case fatality rate (CFR) in humans. In this systematic review with meta‐analysis, a comprehensive literature search was conducted on the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Global Index Medicus databases from January 2000 to June 2022 to identify relevant studies. Pooled CFR and prevalence estimates were calculated using the random‐effects model. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed, and the I2‐statistic was used to investigate a potential source of heterogeneity. A total of 205 articles were included in the final analysis. The overall RVF CFR in humans was found to be 27.5% [95% CI = 8.0–52.5]. The overall pooled prevalence was 7.8% [95% CI = 6.2–9.6] in humans and 9.3% [95% CI = 8.1–10.6] in animals, respectively. The RVF prevalence in individual mosquitoes ranged from 0.0% to 25%. Subgroup analysis showed substantial heterogeneity with respect to geographical regions and human categories. The study shows that there is a correspondingly similar prevalence of RVF in human and animals; however, human CFR is much higher than the observed prevalence. The lack of a surveillance programme and the fact that this virus has subclinical circulation in animals and humans could explain these observations. Context‐specific research is needed on the relationship between household animal production and nutrition outcomes to inform programmes intervening in small‐scale animal production. We examined associations between household animal/fishpond ownership and animal source food (ASF) consumption among 6‐ to 12‐month‐old infants enroled in the control arm of a cluster‐randomised controlled trial in rural Bangladesh. We measured ASF consumption using a 7‐day food frequency questionnaire at 6, 9 and 12 months and assessed household animal/fishpond ownership at 12 months. We developed negative binomial regression models with random intercepts for infant and cluster, controlling for infant age and sex, maternal age, socioeconomic status and season. Models were stratified by a dichotomised maternal decision‐making score. Compared with infants in households without each animal type, those with 4–10 and ≥11 poultry consumed eggs 1.3 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1, 1.6) and 1.6 (95% CI: 1.3, 2.0) times more, respectively; 2–3 and ≥4 dairy‐producing animals consumed dairy 1.9 (95% CI: 1.3, 2.7) and 2.0 (95% CI: 1.3, 3.1) times more, respectively; and ≥12 meat‐producing animals consumed meat 1.4 (95% CI: 1.0, 1.8) times more. It was unclear whether there was an association between fishpond ownership and fish consumption. Our results did not suggest that maternal decision‐making power was a modifier in the relationship between animal/fishpond ownership and ASF consumption. In this South Asian context, strategies intervening in household animal production may increase infant consumption of eggs, dairy and meat, but not necessarily fish. Research is needed on the role of market access and other dimensions of women's empowerment. Key messages: Household ownership of poultry and dairy‐ and meat‐producing animals was associated with higher infant intakes of eggs, dairy and meat, respectively. Background: Radiotherapy is an important clinical treatment for patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), and resistance to radiotherapy is an important cause of recurrence and metastasis in LUSC. The aim of this study was to establish and explore the biological characteristics of radioresistant LUSC cells. Materials and methods: The LUSC cell lines NCI‐H2170 and NCI‐H520 were irradiated (4 Gy × 15Fraction). Radiosensitivity, cell apoptosis, cell cycle, and DNA damage repair were measured by clonogenic survival assay, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence for γ‐H2AX foci, and Comet assay, respectively. Activation of p‐ATM(Ser1981), p‐CHK2(Th68), p‐DNA‐PKcs (Ser2056), and Ku70/Ku80 was measured by western blot. Proteomics was used to explore the differential genes and enriched signaling pathways between radioresistant cell lines and parental lines. In vivo nude mouse xenograft experiments further verified the feasibility of the radioresistant LUSC cell lines. Results: After fractionated irradiation (total dose of 60 Gy), radioresistant cells had decreased radiosensitivity, increased G0/G1 phase arrest, enhanced DNA damage repair ability, and through the ATM/CHK2 and DNA‐PKcs/Ku70 pathways regulated double strands break. The upregulated differential genes in radioresistant cell lines were mainly enriched in biological pathways such as cell migration and extracellular matrix (ECM)‐receptor interaction. In vivo verification of decreased radiosensitivity of radioresistant cells Conclusions: Radioresistant LUSC cell lines were established by fractional radiotherapy, which regulates IR‐induced DNA damage repair through ATM/CHK2 and DNA‐PKcs/Ku70. Persistent and blanchable redness (PBR) is not currently included in category I pressure injury (PI), which is defined as non‐blanchable redness (NBR). However, PBR progresses to PI in a clinical setting. Therefore, it should be clinically managed as category I PI, and a method to distinctly identify PBR is needed. This study aimed to examine whether PI‐related biomarkers can distinguish PRB from transient redness (TR) and NBR using skin blotting. TR, PBR, and NBR models were established by the different conditions of dorsal skin compression. Redness observation and skin blotting were performed, and the skin tissue samples were subjected to histological and molecular biological analyses. The vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf) b, heat shock protein (Hsp) 90aa1, tumour necrosis factor, interleukin (Il) 1b, and Il6 messenger ribonucleic acid levels were significantly different between the three models. The VEGF‐A, VEGF‐B, IL‐1β, and IL‐6 protein levels were different between the three models. Although the results of skin blot examinations were inconsistent with those of the expression analysis of tissue, HSP90α and IL‐1β are suggested to be potential markers to distinguish PBR from TR and NBR. The aim of this article is to present a neural system based on stock architecture for recognizing emotional behavior in dogs. Our considerations are inspired by the original work of Franzoni et al. on recognizing dog emotions. An appropriate set of photographic data has been compiled taking into account five classes of emotional behavior in dogs of one breed, including joy, anger, licking, yawning, and sleeping. Focusing on a particular breed makes it easier to experiment and recognize the emotional behavior of dogs. To broaden our conclusions, in our research study we compare our system with other systems of different architectures. In addition, we also use modern transfer learning with augmentation and data normalization techniques. The results show that VGG16 and VGG19 are the most suitable backbone networks. Therefore, a certain deep neural network, named mVGG16, based on the suboptimal VGG16 has been created, trained and fine‐tuned with transfer (without augmentation and normalization). The developed system is then tested against an internal test dataset. In addition, to show the robustness of the system, a set of external data outside the breed is also taken into account. Being able to detect unsafe dog behavior and rely on a generalization for other breeds is worth popularizing. Background and Purpose: Pathological angiogenesis is a major cause of irreversible blindness in individuals with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Macrophages and microglia (MΦ) contribute to aberrant ocular angiogenesis. However, the role of glucose metabolism of MΦ in nAMD is still undefined. Here, we have investigated the involvement of glycolysis, driven by the kinase/phosphatase PFKFB3, in the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV).Experimental Approach: CNV was induced in mice with laser photocoagulation. Choroid/retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) complexes and MΦ were isolated for analysis by qRT-PCR, western blot, flow cytometry, immunostaining, metabolic measurements and angiogenesis assays.Key Results: MΦ accumulated within the CNV of murine nAMD models and expressed high levels of glycolysis-related enzymes and M1/M2 polarization markers. This phenotype of hyper-glycolytic and activated MΦ was replicated in bone marrow-derived macrophages stimulated by necrotic RPE in vitro. Myeloid cell-specific knockout of PFKFB3, a key glycolytic activator, attenuated pathological neovascularization in laser-induced CNV, which was associated with decreased expression of MΦ polarization markers and pro-angiogenic factors, along with decreased sprouting of vessels in choroid/RPE complexes. Mechanistically, necrotic RPE increased PFKFB3-driven glycolysis in macrophages, leading to activation of HIF-1α/HIF-2α and NF-κB, and subsequent induction of M1/M2 markers and pro-angiogenic cytokines, finally promoting macrophage reprogramming towards an angiogenic phenotype to facilitate development of CNV. The PFKFB3 inhibitor AZ67 also inhibited activation of HIF-1α/HIF-2α and NF-κB signalling and almost completely prevented laser-induced CNV in mice.Conclusions and Implications: Modulation of PFKFB3-mediated macrophage glycolysis and activation is a promising strategy for the treatment of nAMD. Background and Purpose: The pathogenesis of osteoarthritis implicates a low-grade inflammation associated to the innate immune system activation. Toll like receptor (TLR) stimulation triggers the release of inflammatory mediators, which aggravate osteoarthritis. We studied the preventive effect of 6-shogaol, a potential TLR4 inhibitor, on the treatment of experimental knee osteoarthritis.Experimental Approach: Osteoarthritis was induced in C57BL6 mice by surgical section of the medial meniscotibial ligament, which received 6-shogaol for eight weeks. Cartilage damage, inflammatory mediator presence and disease markers were assessed in joint tissues by immunohistochemistry. Computational modelling was used to predict binding modes of 6-shogaol into the TLR4/MD2 receptor and its permeability across cellular membranes. Employing LPS-stimulated chondrocytes and MAPK assay, we elucidated 6-shogaol action mechanisms.Key Results: 6-Shogaol treatment prevented articular cartilage lesions, synovitis and the presence of pro-inflammatory mediators, and disease markers in osteoarthritis animals. Molecular modelling studies predicted 6-shogaol interaction with the TLR4/MD-2 heterodimer in an antagonist conformation through its binding into the MD-2 pocket. In cell culture, we confirmed that 6-shogaol reduced LPS-induced TLR4 inflammatory signalling pathways. Besides, MAPK assay demonstrated that 6-shogaol directly inhibits the ERK1/2 phosphorylation activity.Conclusion and Implications: 6-Shogaol evoked a preventive action on cartilage and synovial inflammation in osteoarthritis mice. 6-shogaol effect may take place not only by hindering the interaction between TLR4 ligands and the TLR4/MD-2 complex in chondrocytes, but also through inhibition of ERK phosphorylation, implying a pleiotropic effect on different mediators activated during osteoarthritis, which proposes it as an attractive drug for osteoarthritis treatments. Objective: Elevation of energy expenditure through an increase of brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis is regarded as one of the most promising ways to prevent obesity development. The preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus is a critical area for control of BAT thermogenesis. However, the intracellular signaling cascades in the POA for regulation of BAT thermogenesis are poorly understood.Methods: Phosphorylation proteomics (phosphoproteomics) and bioinformatics approaches were used to disclose numerous hypothalamic signaling pathways involved in the regulation of BAT thermogenesis. Conditional manipulation of the p38α gene in mouse POA was performed by stereotaxic injection of adeno-associated virus 9 vector to explore the role of p38α in BAT thermogenesis.Results: Multiple hypothalamic signaling pathways were triggered by cold exposure, especially the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. The p38α activation, but not extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), in the hypothalamus was significantly decreased during cold exposure. p38α deficiency in the POA dramatically elevated energy expenditure owing to a marked increase in BAT thermogenesis, resulting in significantly decreased body weight gain and fat mass. Overexpression of p38α in the POA led to a dramatic increase in weight gain.Conclusions: These results demonstrate that p38α in the POA exacerbates obesity development, at least in part owing to a decrease in BAT thermogenesis. Classic psychedelics refer to substances such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, ayahuasca, and mescaline, which induce altered states of consciousness by acting mainly on 5-HT2A receptors. Recently, the interest of psychedelics as pharmacological treatment for psychiatric disorders has increased significantly, including their use on problematic use of alcohol. This systematic review is aimed to analyse the last two decades of studies examining the relationship between classic psychedelics and alcohol consumption. We searched PubMed and PsycInfo for human and preclinical studies published between January 2000 to December 2021. The search identified 639 publications. After selection, 27 studies were included. Human studies (n = 20) generally show promising data and seem to indicate that classic psychedelics could help reduce alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, some of these studies present methodological concerns such as low number of participants, lack of control group or difficulty in determining the effect of classic psychedelics in isolation. On the other hand, preclinical studies (n = 7) investigating the effect of these compounds on voluntary alcohol consumption are scarce and show some conflicting data. Among these compounds, psilocybin seems to show the most consistent data indicating that this compound could be a potential candidate to treat alcohol use disorders. In the absence of understanding the biological and/or psychological mechanisms, more studies including methodological quality parameters are needed to finally determine the effects of classic psychedelics on alcohol consumption. Background and Purpose: Vascular tone is regulated by the relative contractile state of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Several integrins directly modulate VSMC contraction by regulating calcium influx through L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (VGCCs). Genetic variants in ITGA9, which encodes the α9 subunit of integrin α9β1, and SVEP1, a ligand for integrin α9β1, associate with elevated blood pressure; however, neither SVEP1 nor integrin α9β1 has reported roles in vasoregulation. We determined whether SVEP1 and integrin α9β1 can regulate VSMC contraction.Experimental Approach: SVEP1 and integrin binding were confirmed by immunoprecipitation and cell binding assays. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived VSMCs were used in in vitro [Ca2+ ]i studies, and aortas from a Svep1+/- knockout mouse model were used in wire myography to measure vessel contraction.Key Results: We confirmed the ligation of SVEP1 to integrin α9β1 and additionally found SVEP1 to directly bind to integrin α4β1. Inhibition of SVEP1, integrin α4β1 or α9β1 significantly enhanced [Ca2+ ]i levels in isolated VSMCs to Gαq/11 -vasoconstrictors. This response was confirmed in whole vessels where a greater contraction to U46619 was seen in vessels from Svep1+/- mice compared to littermate controls or when integrin α4β1 or α9β1 was inhibited. Inhibition studies suggested that this effect was mediated via VGCCs, PKC and Rho A/Rho kinase dependent mechanisms.Conclusions and Implications: Our studies reveal a novel role for SVEP1 and the integrins α4β1 and α9β1 in reducing VSMC contractility. Background and Purpose: Over past decades, targeted therapies and immunotherapy have improved survival and reduced the morbidity of patients with BRAF-mutated melanoma. However, drug resistance and relapse hinder overall success. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel compounds with therapeutic efficacy against BRAF-melanoma. This prompted us to investigate the antiproliferative profile of a tachykinin-peptide from the Octopus kaurna, Octpep-1 in melanoma.Experimental Approach: We evaluated the cytotoxicity of Octpep-1 by MTT assay. Mechanistic insights on viability and cellular damage caused by Octpep-1 were gained via flow cytometry and bioenergetics. Structural and pharmacological characterization was conducted by molecular modelling, molecular biology, CRISPR/Cas9 technology, high-throughput mRNA and calcium flux analysis. In vivo efficacy was validated in two independent xerograph animal models (mice and zebrafish).Key Results: Octpep-1 selectively reduced the proliferative capacity of human melanoma BRAFV600E -mutated cells with minimal effects on fibroblasts. In melanoma-treated cells, Octpep-1 increased ROS with unaltered mitochondrial membrane potential and promoted non-mitochondrial and mitochondrial respiration with inefficient ATP coupling. Molecular modelling revealed that the cytotoxicity of Octpep-1 depends upon the α-helix and polyproline conformation in the C-terminal region of the peptide. A truncated form of the C-terminal end of Octpep-1 displayed enhanced potency and efficacy against melanoma. Octpep-1 reduced the progression of tumours in xenograft melanoma mice and zebrafish.Conclusion and Implications: We unravel the intrinsic anti-tumoural properties of a tachykinin peptide. This peptide mediates the selective cytotoxicity in BRAF-mutated melanoma in vitro and prevents tumour progression in vivo, providing a foundation for a therapy against melanoma. Background and Purpose: Ischaemia is known to cause massive neuronal depolarization, termed anoxic depolarization (AD), due to energy failure and loss of membrane ion gradients. The neuromodulator adenosine accumulates extracellularly during ischaemia and activates four metabotropic receptors: A1 , A2A , A2B and A3 . Striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs) express high levels of A2A receptors and are particularly vulnerable to ischaemic insults. A2A Receptor blockade reduces acute striatal post-ischaemic damage but the cellular mechanisms involved are still unknown.Experimental Approach: We performed patch-clamp recordings of MSNs in rat striatal slices subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) to investigate the effects of A2A receptor ligands or ion channel blockers on AD and OGD-induced ionic imbalance, measured as a positive shift in Erev of ramp currents.Key Results: Our data indicate that the A2A receptor antagonist SCH58261 (10 μM) significantly attenuated ionic imbalance and AD appearance in MSNs exposed to OGD. The K+ channel blocker Ba2+ (2 mM) or the Na+ channel blocker tetrodotoxin (1 μM) exacerbated and attenuated, respectively, OGD-induced changes. Spontaneous excitatory post-synaptic current (sEPSC) analysis in MSNs revealed that the A2A receptor agonist CGS21680 (1 μM) prevented OGD-induced decrease of sEPSCs within the first 5 min of the insult, an effect shared by the K+ channel blocker Ba2+ , indicating facilitated glutamate release.Conclusion and Implications: Adenosine, released during striatal OGD, activates A2A receptors that may exacerbate OGD-induced damage through K+ channel inhibition. Background and Purpose: Recent evidence links brain insulin resistance with neurodegenerative diseases, where hyperphosphorylated tau protein contributes to neuronal cell death. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate if d-pinitol inositol, which acts as an insulin sensitizer, affects the phosphorylation status of tau protein.Experimental Approach: We studied the pharmacological effect of d-pinitol on insulin signalling and tau phosphorylation in the hippocampus of Wistar and Zucker rats. To this end, we evaluated by western blotting the Akt pathway and its downstream proteins as being one of the main insulin-mediator pathways. Also, we explored the functional status of additional kinases phosphorylating tau, including PKA, ERK1/2, AMPK and CDK5. We utilized the 3xTg mouse model as a control for tauopathy, since it carries tau mutations that promote phosphorylation and aggregation.Key Results: Surprisingly, we discovered that oral d-pinitol treatment lowered tau phosphorylation significantly, but not through the expected kinase GSK-3 regulation. An extensive search for additional kinases phosphorylating tau revealed that this effect was mediated through a mechanism dependent on the reduction of the activity of the CDK5, affecting both its p35 and p25 subunits. This effect disappeared in leptin-deficient Zucker rats, uncovering that the association of leptin deficiency, obesity, dyslipidaemia and hyperinsulinaemia abrogates d-pinitol actions on tau phosphorylation. The 3xTg mice confirmed d-pinitol effectiveness in a genetic AD-tauopathy.Conclusion and Implications: The present findings suggest that d-pinitol, by regulating CDK5 activity through a decrease of CDK5R1, is a potential drug for developing treatments for neurological disorders such as tauopathies. Background and Purpose: Long-term ultraviolet (UV) exposure can cause inflammation, pigmentation and photoaging. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA/tretinoin) is a commonly used retinoic acid receptor (RAR) agonist in the clinical treatment of UV-induced skin problems. However, the use of such drugs is often accompanied by systemic adverse reactions caused by nonspecific activation of RARs. Therefore, this study was designed to screen for a novel RAR-γ-selective agonist with high safety.Experimental Approach: Molecular docking, dynamic simulation and Biacore were used to screen and identify novel RAR-γ-selective agonists. RT-PCR, ELISA, western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry and proteomic analysis were used to detect the effects of these novel RAR-γ selective agonists on UVA-induced inflammation and photoaging cell models. UVA-induced mouse models were used to evaluate the effects of tectorigenin on skin repair, ageing and inflammation.Key Results: Tectorigenin is a novel RAR-γ-selective agonist, which inhibits UV-induced oxidative damage, inflammatory factor release and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production. Tectorigenin can also reverse the UVA-induced loss of collagen. The results of the signalling pathway research showed that tectorigenin mainly affects the MAPK/JNK/AP-1 pathway. In animal experiments, tectorigenin showed better anti-inflammatory and anti-photoaging effects, and caused less skin irritation than ATRA. N-(2-methoxybenzyl)phenethylamines (NBOMes) are a family of potent 5-HT2A agonists containing substances emerging on the illicit drug market as a replacement for N,N-diethyllysergamide (LSD). Despite the increasing use of NBOMes for diagnostic, research and recreational purposes, only a limited number of studies have focussed on their in vivo effect. Here, we investigated pharmacokinetics, systemic toxicity, thermoregulation in individually and group-housed animals, and acute behavioural effects after subcutaneous administration of 2,5-dimethoxy-4-(2-((2-methoxybenzyl)amino)ethyl)benzonitrile (25CN-NBOMe; 0.2, 1, and 5 mg/kg) in Wistar rats. Drug concentration peaked 1 h after the administration of 5 mg/kg in both blood serum and brain tissue with a half-life of 1.88 and 2.28 h, respectively. According to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 423 toxicity assay, the drug is classified into category 3 with a lethal dose of 300 mg/kg and an estimated LD50 value of 200 mg/kg. Histological examination of organs collected from rats injected with the lethal dose revealed subtle pathological changes, highly suggestive of acute cardiovascular arrest due to malignant arrhythmia. Altered thermoregulation after 5 mg/kg was demonstrated by reduced body temperature in individually housed rats (p < 0.01). Behavioural effects assessed by the Open Field test and Prepulse Inhibition of Startle Response revealed that the two lower doses (0.2 and 1 mg/kg) caused a reduction in locomotor activity (p < 0.01), increased anxiety (p < 0.05) and 5 mg/kg additionally impaired sensorimotor gating (p < 0.001). In summary, 25CN-NBOMe readily passes the blood-brain barrier and exhibits a moderate level of toxicity and behavioural effect comparable with other NBOMes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through hundreds of millions of evolution, animals and plants have possessed their unique structures to adapt to natural variations. As a familiar process, liquid transportation plays an important part in both production and life, and researchers focus on how to achieve this process in a convenient and efficient way without energy input. Inspired by nature, various bioinspired structures are reported and have won multiple achievements. This review starts from basic theory about surface wettability, and then summarises the creatures with special liquid transport functions as well as crucial structures that cause this phenomenon. Next, the recent articles about transporting liquid by bioinspired materials are introduced. Finally, we proposed a brief conclusion and the prospect of bionic materials in the future. Synthetic cathinones, such as 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), are recreational drugs of abuse often identified in 'bath salts' preparations. Humans report compulsive patterns of bath salts use, and previous work suggests that a subset of rats develop unusually high levels of MDPV self-administration. This study aims to test the hypothesis that high levels of impulsivity (e.g., inability to withhold responding for a sucrose reward) will predispose rats to high levels of MDPV self-administration relative to rats with lower levels of impulsivity. The 1-choice serial reaction time task (1-CSRTT) was used to assess impulsivity (i.e., premature responding) in 10 female and 10 male Sprague Dawley rats. Rats were then allowed to self-administer 0.032 mg/kg/inf MDPV or 0.32 mg/kg/inf cocaine, after which full dose-response curves for MDPV (0.001-0.1 mg/kg/inf) or cocaine (0.01-1 mg/kg/inf) were generated under a FR5 schedule of reinforcement. After a history of self-administering MDPV or cocaine, impulsivity was reassessed under the 1-CSRTT, prior to evaluating the acute effects of MDPV (0.032-0.32 mg/kg) or cocaine (0.1-1 mg/kg) on impulsivity. Level of impulsivity was not correlated with subsequent levels of either MDPV or cocaine self-administration, and level of drug self-administration was also not correlated with subsequent levels of impulsivity, although acute administration of MDPV and cocaine did increase premature responding. In failing to find direct relationships between either impulsivity and subsequent drug-taking behaviour, or drug-taking behaviour and subsequent assessments of impulsivity, these findings highlight the complexity inherent in the associations between impulsive behaviour and drug-taking behaviour in both animal models and humans. It is widely held that the central monoamine neurotransmitters modulate alcohol intake. Few studies, however, directly assess the relationship between baseline and alcohol-induced monoamine turnover, as well as the change from baseline, as predictors of alcohol intake. Using a nonhuman primate model, this study investigates baseline, alcohol-induced and alcohol-induced change in monoamine activity and their relationship with alcohol intake. Alcohol-naïve, adolescent rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, N = 114) were administered a standardized intravenous bolus of alcohol solution (16.8%, v/v) on two occasions, approximately 1 month apart. One month prior to and 1 h following each alcohol infusion, cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was obtained and assayed for monoamine metabolite concentrations. Approximately 6-7 months later, subjects were allowed unfettered access to an aspartame-sweetened alcohol solution (8.4%, v/v) for 1 h/day, 5 days/week, over 5-7 weeks. Results showed strong positive correlations between baseline and post-infusion CSF monoamine metabolite concentrations, indicating a trait-like response. Low baseline and post-infusion serotonin and dopamine metabolite concentrations and a smaller change in serotonin and dopamine metabolites from one infusion to the next were associated with higher alcohol intake. Low baseline and post-infusion norepinephrine metabolite concentrations predicted high alcohol intake, but unlike the other monoamines, a greater change in norepinephrine metabolite concentrations from one infusion to the next was associated with higher alcohol intake. These findings suggest that individual differences in naturally occurring and alcohol-induced monoamine activity, as well as the change between exposures, are important modulators of initial alcohol consumption and may play a role in the risk for excessive alcohol intake. Housefly (Musca domestica) is an excellent candidate for the distribution of susceptible and resistant bacterial strains that potentially threaten public health. To date, there is a paucity of information on the global distribution of pathogenic bacteria of medical and veterinary importance from diverse environmental settings. Therefore, this study was undertaken to conduct a systemic review and meta‐analysis to estimate occurrence of various bacterial species of medical and veterinary importance harboured by houseflies around the world. Published articles from 1980 to 2020 were retrieved from electronic databases and assessed for eligibility according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis guidelines. Seventy‐eight studies were included in the review with only 44 studies being eligible for meta‐analysis. Results indicated that eligible studies used in this review were from four continents, i.e., Asia (47.4%) America (23.1%), Africa (20.5%) and Europe (8.9%). The majority of the studies (56.4%) used the culture method for the identification of bacterial pathogens, while 30.7% used both culture and PCR techniques. For meta‐analysis, we focused on five pathogenic bacterial species including Escherichia coli, Enterococcusfaecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. High heterogeneity was found among studies investigating different pathogens including E. coli (Q = 10,739.55; I2 = 99.60; Q‐p 0.0001), E. faecium (Q = 317.61; I2 = 86.46; Q‐p < 0.0001), K. pneumonia (Q = 1,576.61; I2 = 97.27; Q‐p < 0.0001), S. aureus (Q = 2,439.12; I2 = 98.24; Q‐p < 0.0001) and P. aeruginosa (Q = 1,283.0; I2 = 96.65; Q‐p < 0.0001). Furthermore, it was observed that houseflies carried a considerable number of susceptible and antibiotic‐resistant bacterial strains that pose considerable threats to public health. Findings from this study have provided more insight on the vectoral potential of houseflies in the transmission of significant bacterial pathogens from different regions across the world. The rupture of unstable atherosclerotic plaques is the major cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Despite significant limitations in our understanding and ability to identify unstable plaque pathology and prevent plaque rupture, most atherosclerosis research utilises preclinical animal models exhibiting stable atherosclerosis. Here, we introduce the tandem stenosis (TS) mouse model that reflects plaque instability and rupture, as seen in patients. The TS model involves dual ligation of the right carotid artery, leading to locally predefined unstable atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolaemic mice. It exhibits key characteristics of human unstable plaques, including plaque rupture, luminal thrombosis, intraplaque haemorrhage, large necrotic cores, thin or ruptured fibrous caps and extensive immune cell accumulation. Altogether, the TS model represents an ideal preclinical tool for improving our understanding of human plaque instability and rupture, for the development of imaging technologies to identify unstable plaques, and for the development and testing of plaque-stabilising treatments for the prevention of atherosclerotic plaque rupture. Background and Purpose: Diabetic nephropathy is a common complications related to high morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetes. We investigated the action of the dual modulator, PTUPB, a soluble epoxide hydrolase and cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor against diabetic nephropathy.Experimental Approach: Sixteen-week-old type 2 diabetic and proteinuric obese ZSF1 rats were treated with vehicle, PTUPB or enalapril for 8 weeks. Measurements were made of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, thromboxane B2 (TBX2 ) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) in the kidney of these and lean ZSF1 rats along with their blood pressure.Key Result: Obese ZSF1 rats were diabetic with fivefold higher fasting blood glucose levels and markedly higher HbA1c levels compared with lean ZSF1 rats. PTUPB nor enalapril reduced fasting blood glucose or HbA1c but alleviated the development of diabetic nephropathy. In PTUPB-treated obese ZSF1 rats, glomerular nephrin expression was preserved. Enalapril also alleviated diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic renal injury in obese ZSF1 rats was accompanied by renal inflammation with six to sevenfold higher urinary MCP-1 (CCR2) level and renal infiltration of CD-68 positive cells. PTUPB and enalapril significantly reduced urinary MCP-1 levels and renal mRNA expression of cytokines. Both PTUPB and enalapril lowered blood pressure. PTUPB but not enalapril decreased hyperlipidaemia and liver injury in obese ZSF1 rats.Conclusion and Implications: Overall, the dual modulator PTUPB does not treat hyperglycaemia but can effectively alleviate hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, hyperlipidaemia and liver injury in type 2 diabetic rats. Alcohol-induced aggression is a destructive and widespread phenomenon associated with violence and sexual assault. However, little is understood concerning its mechanistic origin. We have developed a Drosophila melanogaster model to genetically dissect and understand the phenomenon of sexually dimorphic alcohol-induced aggression. Males with blood alcohol levels of 0.04-mg/ml BAC were less aggressive than alcohol-naive males, but when the BAC had dropped to ~0.015 mg/ml, the alcohol-treated males showed an increase in aggression toward other males. This aggression-promoting treatment is referred to as the post-ethanol aggression (PEA) treatment. Females do not show increased aggression after the same treatment. PEA-treated males also spend less time courting and attempt to copulate earlier than alcohol-naive flies. PEA treatment induces expression of the FruM transcription factor (encoded by a male-specific transcript from the fruitless gene), whereas sedating doses of alcohol reduce FruM expression and reduce male aggression. Transgenic suppression of FruM induction also prevents alcohol-induced aggression. In male flies, alcohol-induced aggression is dependent on the male isoform of the fruitless transcription factor (FruM). The information of how the high climatic variability in the south‐west Buenos Aires Province (SWBS) region, Argentina, impacts on existing cow–calf operations is needed. This research uses a combination of quantitative (modelling) and qualitative (workshops) methodologies. The objective was to assess, under interannual climate variability, the productive and economic performance and greenhouse gas emissions and the marginal value of additional feed of four cow–calf systems arranged as a potential farm innovation path in the SWBS, Argentina. Modelling results showed that along this technological path where forage crops are decreased, perennial pastures are increased and anticipated weaning is included, productive and economic outcomes increased and the emission intensity decreased. How extra feeds may be used to cope with seasonal and interannual feeding was also identified. Moreover, barriers to adopt the suggested farm innovation path were identified by farmers, consultants and extensionists and strategies and their implication discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
