Appropriate paper-based technology (APT) is used to provide postural support for children with cerebral palsy (CP) in low-resourced settings. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the impact of APT on the children's and families' lives. A convenience sample of children with CP and their families participated. Inclusion was based on the Gross Motor Function Classification System levels IV and V. APT seating or standing frames were provided for six months. A mixed methods impact of APT devices on the children and families included the Family Impact Assistive Technology Scale for Adaptive Seating (FIATS-AS); the Child Engagement in Daily Life (CEDL) questionnaire; and a qualitative assessment from diary/log and semi-structured interviews. Ten children (median 3 years, range 9 months to 7 years). Baseline to follow-up median (IQR) FIATS-AS were: 22.7 (9.3) and 30.3 (10.2), respectively (p=.002). Similarly mean (SD) CEDL scores for "frequency" changed from 30.5 (13.2) to 42.08 (5.96) (p=.021) and children's enjoyment scores from 2.23 (0.93) to 2.91 (0.79) (p=.019). CEDL questionnaire for self-care was not discriminatory; seven families scored zero at both baseline and 6 months. Qualitative interviews revealed three key findings; that APT improved functional ability, involvement/interaction in daily-life situations, and a reduced family burden of care. APT devices used in Kenyan children with non-ambulant CP had a meaningful positive effect on both the children's and their families' lives. Assistive devices are often unobtainable for children with cerebral palsy (CP) in low-income countries. APT is a low cost and sustainable solution to make seating and standing devices for disabled children in Kenya. The regular use of a postural support device enhanced the children's motor skills, ability to function and participate in everyday activities, reduced the burden of care for the families and promoted the children's social interaction. The mean residual lifetime (MRL) of a unit is its expected additional lifetime provided that it has survived until time t. The MRL estimation problem has been frequently addressed in the literature since it has wide applications in statistics, reliability and survival analysis. In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the MRL in ranked set sampling when actual quantifications of a concomitant variable are available. To exploit the additional information of the concomitant variable, we introduce several MRL estimators based on some regression techniques. We then compare them with the standard MRL estimator in simple random sampling using Monte Carlo simulation and a real dataset from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. Assistive technologies have allowed people with disabilities to perform daily tasks with greater independence and autonomy, especially for visually impaired people. Using smart home solutions allows these users to control their homes with less cognitive and physical demand. However, making such applications accessible to meet the needs of visually impaired users, especially in developing countries, remains a challenge. This paper investigates the perceptions of these users about home automation technologies through semi-structured interviews. A total of 20 visually impaired people participated in the interviews. A thematic analysis revealed results concerning the following themes: (1) how people go about their lives at home and around, how people interact with current appliances, objects and environments, (3) how people perceive their attitude to technologies, (4) the Brazilian context of smart homes, (5) what people think smart homes should do and (6) envisaging ways of interacting with smart home systems. The results obtained provide significant insight into the needs of visually-impaired people in Brazil, with analysis of issues that are common with previous studies in more developed countries and specific issues that have important particularities and implications in Brazil and other developing countries. Substance use and depressive psychiatric symptoms have been associated with migration and mobility. The Mexico-Guatemala border is a key transit point for internal, regional, and international migration flows. However, there is limited knowledge of the role of substance use, migration, and mobility on mental health among migrants at this border. Our paper explores the association of migration and mobility patterns with possible major depressive symptoms among migrants at this key geographic region. We recruited 392 substance-using migrants using modified time-location sampling. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were developed. We found that 12% of the sample had possible major depressive symptoms. After adjusting for relevant covariates, including gender, income, and perceived homelessness, we found that recent rural-urban and short-term migrants had higher odds of possible major depressive symptoms, whereas international migrants had lower odds. Findings of this paper suggest that although migrants experience hardship and uncertainty, they may respond with complex and nuanced forms of coping and planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the experiences of US child welfare professionals during the COVID pandemic. Using an online survey, we report on a convenience sample of 444 child welfare workers. The majority reported receiving adequate guidance on staying safe; 86.3% were given access to face masks. Workers reported 75.8% of clients used masks; 10.7% reported contracting COVID through work. About 80% worried that child clients were more at-risk. Workers who felt the most supported and least at-risk were those with stay-at-home orders. In 2006, Marks and Fraley published research suggesting that people remembered more information that was consistent rather than inconsistent with a sexual double standard. Despite the impact of that paper on the field, there were several caveats of that research, including a small sample. The present research, therefore, aims to replicate and extend Marks and Fraley's research. Presently, 400 participants read a vignette about a sexually active man or woman for two minutes. This vignette contained an equal amount of positive and negative information. Participants then had 5 minutes to recall the information from the vignette. In the extension portion of the research, some participants experienced an experimentally varied delay, which was used to create forgetting curves in an effort to parse apart whether any differences in recall were due to differences in the encoding process, retrieval process, or both. Recall results replicated the pattern of results from Marks and Fraley (2006), in that participants remembered more negative information about the woman than the man, and more negative than positive information about the woman. Analyses of forgetting curves were inconclusive, as the predictors explained less than 0.5% of the variance in recalled information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the first virtual reality (VR) photography application that incorporates elements on panoramic images to assess short-term spatial memory is presented. It also allows the interaction with these elements. A study was conducted (N = 50) to compare participants' performance outcomes and subjective experience when using a VR application with and without panoramic photography. The results show that both applications are effective in assessing short-term spatial memory. The results with panoramic photography include: 1) It was effective for short-term recall since, after using the application, the participants were able to verbally recall the objects and place them without significant differences with respect to the objects correctly placed; 2) The performance outcomes were independent of age and gender; 3) The perceived level of presence was directly related to experiencing less cybersickness when using the application; 4) The level of satisfaction was directly related to perceived enjoyment, concentration, usability, competence, calmness, and expertise; 5) The more the familiarity with VR applications, the less the perceived cybersickness. Finally, the application offers two main advantages: 1) The evaluators can customize the environment by adding as many elements as desired to the panoramic photograph; 2) It could be especially suitable for groups with reduced mobility. This paper examines the process and outcomes from a five-year, community-based participatory research (CBPR) study of a community building initiative to strengthen two neighborhoods in a mid-size, Mid-Atlantic city. In addition to supporting over 50 resident-led projects during the five-year initiative, outcomes included positive changes in resident perceptions about some aspects of neighborhood safety, cleanliness, greening, and vibrancy, and in both neighborhoods respondents who were most involved with the lead community-based organizations (CBOs) reported significantly higher social capital compared to those least involved. Nevertheless, analysis of the evaluation process revealed certain data were more meaningful to stakeholders during and at the end of the initiative, and other data were less worth the effort and cost to collect. In the last few decades, numerous studies and review papers have examined a wide range of potential risk factors in an attempt to understand adolescent smoking. In the majority of those studies, family is often regarded as an important element in the life of an adolescent. The authors investigated whether family factors such as child–parent relationship and parental educational level are predictors of adolescent smoking status in three school types using archival data. Both Spearman correlation and Chi-square test of independence were used to examine the relationships. In viewing all the school types as one, the result showed that at (rho =.148, n = 751, p < 0.05), a significant positive relationship existed between child-father relationship and adolescent smoking but not with child–mother relationship. However, in controlling for school types, the Chi-square test of independence revealed (Imam Hatip high school (X2(8) = 7.121, p > 0.05), Anadolu high school (X2(8) = 12.423, p > 0.05) and Vocational high school (X2(8) = 17.744, p < 0.05) a relationship between child–mother relationship and adolescent in Vocational high school. As to whether the influence of child–father relationship on adolescent smoking differed in terms of school types, result suggested a relationship existed in all the three school types (Imam Hatip high school (X2(8) = 30.965, p < 0.05), Anadolu high school (X2(8) = 21.241, p < 0.05), and Vocational high school (X2(8) = 30.804, p < 0.05). To investigate determinants of willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, core affect regarding using telerehabilitation, and digital competencies in rehabilitation professionals in Austria and Germany before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional paper-based and online survey was conducted before and during COVID-19, respectively, with three cohorts of rehabilitation professionals. Outcomes were the willingness to adopt telerehabilitation evaluated using the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology; willingness of technology use using the short scale for assessing the willingness of technology use; digital competencies and core affect using the Digital Competence Framework and semantic differential, respectively. Multivariate ordinal regression analysis was performed to determine predictors. Included were 603 rehabilitation professionals. Analysis revealed differences between Austria and Germany and before and during the pandemic for most outcomes. German residency, the pandemic, and a higher educational level were most important predictors of higher willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, digital competencies, and positive core affect. The pandemic increased most aspects of willingness to adopt telerehabilitation, willingness of technology use, digital competencies, and positive core affect. Results confirm that rehabilitation professionals with higher degrees are more prone to adopt innovations in healthcare.Registration: German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00021464) The willingness to adopt telerehabilitation is associated with external factors increasing the need for alternative rehabilitation delivery, such as COVID-19, and with financial facilitators, such as reimbursement. Fisher information is a fundamental concept of statistical inference and plays an important role in many areas of statistical analysis. In this paper, we obtain explicit expressions for the Fisher information matrix in ranked set sampling (RSS) from the simple linear regression model with replicated observations. It has been shown to be the sum of two matrices, one of which is the Fisher information matrix based on simple random sampling (SRS). The extropy measure proposed by Lad, Sanfilippo, and Agro (Statistical Science 30 (1):40–58, 2015) as a dual function of Shannon entropy has received a considerable attention in the last five years. In this paper, we first show a representation for the weighted extropy of ranked set sampling in terms of quantile and density-quantile functions. Then we provide some related results including monotone properties, stochastic orders, characterizations and sharp bounds. This study investigates whether people's responses to official communications about COVID-19 could be "profiled" with respect to socio-economic-demographic and behavioral characteristics. Such profiles could enhance the effectiveness of future crisis management through the use of profile-adapted communications that maximize message comprehension. A representative web panel survey (742 respondents) was conducted across Switzerland in February 2022 to assess the population's reaction to COVID-19 communications during the pandemic. Latent profile analysis was conducted to explore if distinct profiles of reactions to the communications would emerge, and how each of them relate to conspiracy mentality and SED measures. The analyses revealed three latent profiles: "Compliant supporters" (54%), "defiant deniers" (23.6%), and "anxious skeptics" (22.4%). Respondents with high conspiracy mentality were more likely to belong to "defiant deniers" or "anxious skeptics." Each profile was characterized by distinct SED and behavioral features (discussed in the paper). The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that one communication does not work for all people. Our study evidenced three different types of respondent profiles that require profile-adapted communications for more effective crisis control. Our study is the first to profile people's responses to COVID-19 communications in a systematic, person-centered way. Adolescent suicide has become an increasingly serious social problem in China. Bullying victimization was found to be an influential factor of suicidal tendency, but less attention has been paid to the internal mechanisms of the relationship. This paper examined the relationship between adolescents' bullying victimization and suicidal tendency, and the mediating effects of internalizing problems and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Generalized Structural Equation Model was employed to a sample of 3,575 Chinese secondary school students. Bullying victimization has a direct positive impact on adolescents' suicidal tendency, but also has an indirect impact on suicidal tendency through three paths: the independent mediating role of internalizing problems and NSSI, and the chain mediating role of internalizing problems and NSSI. The results suggested that students who are bullied tend to have a higher risk of suicidal tendency, and internalizing problems and NSSI are usually the prelude to suicidal behaviors. While educators, curriculum authors and policy makers alike are influenced by assumptions about parents' dis/approval of gender and sexuality diversity, both generally, as well as specifically in relation to this topic's appropriateness for K-12 classrooms, little empirical data is available to support these assumptions. What data does exist suggests that parents generally support the implementation of a comprehensive sexuality curriculum, inclusive of same-sex attraction, and view sexuality education as a school-parent partnership. Surveying a sample of Australian parents of children attending a government (public) school (N = 2093), whose responses were weighted to produce nationally representative estimates, this study sought to expand on previous findings by exploring the complexities of parents' attitudes in relation to gender and sexuality diversity and its place within relationships and sexual health education. This paper provides a descriptive overview of parents' ideas about the purpose of relationships and sexual health education and their views on the importance of including gender and sexuality diversity-inclusive content within related curriculum areas. Notably, over 80% of parents supported the inclusion of gender and sexuality diversity-inclusive relationships and sexual health education topics across primary and secondary government schools. Objectives: Differences in health among migrant groups are related to the length of stay in host countries. We examined the health of people reporting Caribbean ethnic origins within and outside of Canada; and the possible associations between length of stay and poorer physical and mental health outcomes. Method: Analyses were conducted on population data collected in Canada (2000/2001, 2003, 2005), Jamaica (2005) and Guyana (2005). Physician-diagnosed and self-rated health measures were used to assess physical and mental health statuses. Results: Rates of chronic conditions were generally higher among people reporting Caribbean ethnic origins in Canada compared to those living in the Caribbean region. Self-rated fair or poor general health rates, however, were higher among participants in the Caribbean region. Higher rates of any mood disorders were also found among Caribbean region participants in comparison to those in Canada. Logistic regression analyses revealed that new Caribbean immigrants (less than 10 years since immigration) in Canada had better physical health than those who were more established. Those who immigrated more than 20 years ago showed consistently better health conditions than those who had immigrated between 11 and 20 years ago. This healthy immigration effect, however, was not present for all chronic conditions among all Caribbean origin migrant groups. Moreover, mood disorders were highest among new immigrants compared to older immigrants. Conclusions: When and where ethnic Caribbeans migrate to and emigrate from matters in health statuses. These results have implications for policies related to health and well-being in support of ethnic Caribbean origin individuals who relocate to Canada. Based on the lack of validated assessment tools to detect past physical or sexual abuse, the current study examines to what extent the experience of either sexual or physical abuse is reflected in self-figure drawings of adolescents at-risk. A convenience sample consists of 93 adolescents at risk between the ages of 12–17 recruited from Welfare institutes divided into three groups: Group 1 included adolescents who experienced sexual abuse, Group 2 included adolescents who experienced physical abuse but not sexual abuse, Group 3 included adolescents who experienced neither sexual abuse nor physical abuse. A self-report anonymous questionnaire that consisted of demographics, traumatic events questionnaire, and the Medical Somatic Dissociation Questionnaire (MSDQ) was administered following Ethical approval and signing of consent forms. Participants were asked to draw themselves on an A4 sheet of paper using a pencil. Five social workers who were unaware of participants' experiences assessed the drawings independently for the level of obviousness of the following indicators: face line, eyes, nose, ears, hair stand, forehead, lower body, arms, and hands. Results yielded differences in pictorial indicators (nose, hair stand, lower body) among the groups. MSDQ score was found significantly higher among sexually abused victims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many people overestimate the health risks associated with nicotine, mistakenly perceiving nicotine as the main carcinogen in cigarettes and a leading cause of smoking-related diseases. Health professionals have been calling for public education programs to correct nicotine misperceptions in the hope that a lower risk perception of nicotine could encourage the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). However, a lower risk perception of nicotine could also lower perceived risk of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). This paper evaluated the necessity of correcting nicotine misperceptions and explored possible intervention strategies to increase use of NRT and decrease use of e-cigarettes. In Study 1, smokers were surveyed about their perceptions of nicotine harm, and attitudes and intention toward using NRT and e-cigarettes. Results showed that overestimation of nicotine harm was associated with e-cigarette attitude and intention, but not with NRT. Informed by the survey results, three correction messages (a nicotine message, an NRT message, and an e-cigarette message) were developed and experimentally tested in Study 2 on both tobacco users and nontobacco users. The nicotine message lowered people's perception of nicotine harm but it did not change attitude and intention toward tobacco product use. Background: In Colombia, the rapid rise of illicit opioid use has become a major public health concern. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are well established and effective. However, access to MOUD remains suboptimal in this country. This paper aims to understand barriers to accessing MOUD in Colombia to inform the integration of this treatment modality in health systems. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey among persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) not enrolled in MMT in four Colombian cities with high known OUD prevalence. Survey domains consisted of the Barriers to Treatment Inventory, attitudes pertaining to MOUD treatments, and perceptions regarding interventions to ease access to Methadone. Results: A total of 84 subjects completed the survey. The most commonly endorsed barriers were related to admission difficulties, including concerns with "too many steps to get into treatment" (84.3%), experiencing withdrawal symptoms (78.1%), being placed on waiting lists (48.2%), and cost (44.6%). Nearly all participants were receptive to Methadone dispensation in primary care (96.4%) or mobile vans (91.6%). Conclusions: Findings from this study highlight persistent barriers to linking with MOUD among adults with OUD in Colombia requiring increased outpatient treatment programs, flexible methadone dosing, and administrative and financial support for patients. Many Q&A sites initially run only in English, and then gradually release their multi-lingual variants to serve users who speak other languages. The launch of such multi-lingual sites always lead to an intense dispute about the pros and cons of multi-lingual sites. Although all arguments and concerns sound reasonable, people can rarely provide solid evidence to convince each other. In this paper, from users' comments about the launch of several non-English Stack Overflow sites, we first identify three major concerns including community split, knowledge needs and interests in other languages, and knowledge fragmentation and duplication. To validate these three concerns, we conduct an evidence-based data analysis and comparison of user characteristics, tag usage and cross-site links between the Russian Stack Overflow and the English Stack Overflow on these three concerns. The current study examined the teacher candidates' perceptions of ways a process-based reflective teacher training course-especially those focused on bumpy moments in the classroom, through situational role plays, video reflections, and scenarios- could assist them in their reflective and caring practices. In this regard, a sample of 45 pre-service teacher candidates enrolled at a teacher education university in Iran partook in the study and filled in the reflective and caring practices questionnaire before and after the treatment. Moreover, three teacher candidates were offered to keep reflective journals about the procedure based on their observations. Furthermore, pre- and post-phase interview was conducted with 15 participants. The results of this study revealed that the participants across all three intervention groups experienced improvement as a result of engaging in the teacher training course. The scenario group had the highest mean, followed by the video group; the role play group showed the least amount of improvement in reflective questionnaire mean score of all the treatment groups. The implication is that the process-oriented reflective teacher training course through situational role-play, video-based reflection, and scenario-based reflection can make teacher candidates more cautious about the caring and reflective aspects of their teaching. Introduction: Finite resources limit the amount of time EMS agencies can dedicate to continuing education in pediatric emergencies. EMS instructors need effective, efficient, and affordable educational strategies for these high-risk, low frequency events. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of four training methods in management of pediatric emergencies for paramedics. Methods: A validated, performance-based, simulated clinical assessment module was used to provide a baseline measurement of paramedics' resuscitation skills during three simulated pediatric emergencies. Educational modules were developed that targeted deficiencies identified by the baseline assessment, including advanced pediatric life support skills, airway management, use of the Broselow-Luten Tape®, pediatric drug dose calculations and drug delivery, seizure management, and trauma assessment. Paramedics from five EMS agencies in Michigan were randomized to four education intervention groups. The control group used an existing, online, continuing education course. Three experimental groups were exposed to the same content during five, one-hour sessions conducted over 2.5 years. Instruction was delivered using high-fidelity, simulated case-based training, low-fidelity simulation training, or lecture with procedural skills lab, based on group assignment. After the training, all groups were tested within 4–6 months using methods identical to baseline testing. Results: One hundred forty-seven subjects completed the study. There were no differences in baseline skill levels among the four groups. Only the low fidelity simulation training group demonstrated improvement of combined scenario scores (p = 0.0008). Scores for targeted skills improved in one scenario in the high-fidelity group, two in the low-fidelity group, one in the lecture/lab group, and none in the control group. Conclusions: Although improvements in those skills included in the training were found in three groups, two hours of training in pediatric emergencies per year was insufficient to produce a substantial improvement overall. Expensive, high-fidelity simulators were not necessary for teaching pediatric resuscitation skills to paramedics; instructive scenarios using low-fidelity manikins and debriefings appear to be adequate. Stroke significantly impairs health-related quality of life (HRQL). Stroke survivors with aphasia (SWA) experience lower HRQL than stroke survivors without aphasia (SSA) as a result of poorer communication and social functioning. The extent to which aphasia influences HRQL in African-Americans and the components of social functioning that are most important to HRQL warrants further exploration. There were two main objectives of this paper. The first was to survey HRQL domains of communication, physical, mental/emotional, role, and social functioning in African American SWA and SSA. The second was to examine if social support and social network predicted HRQL in SWA. A total of 39 African American adults (62.4 ± 11.10) participated in this descriptive cross-sectional case control study. Patient-reported outcome measures were used to assess HRQL, perceived social support, and social network in SWA, SSA, and normal-aging healthy controls (NAH). Data analysis included an ANOVA and moderator regression to determine if social support or social network predicted HRQL in SWA. SWA reported a significantly lower overall HRQL (p = <.000) than NAH adults. Communication HRQL was the hallmark difference found between SWA and SSA (p = <.000). Social support and social network were relatively similar among all three groups. However, social support and social network did not predict HRQL in SWA. Findings from this study suggest that social HRQL continues to be significantly lower in SWA; however, social support and social network factors do not drive differences among African-Americans. Objective. Poor health outcomes of Bangladeshi readymade garment (RMG) workers tend to be associated with a variety of occupational factors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of, and risk factors associated with, the physical and psychological health outcomes of Bangladeshi RMG workers. Methods. Responses to a cross-sectional survey from a convenience sample of 411 adult Bangladeshi RMG workers (mean age = 26.24 years; SD 6.40 years; female = 80%) were analysed using bivariate and multivariate (logistic regression models) analyses. Results. More than half of the participants reported headaches (61.6%) and colds/flu (51.3%), followed by fever (37.2%), diarrhoea (32.8%), bodily pain (29.9%) and respiratory infections (20.9%). For psychological health, stress (69.1%), anxiety (66.2%) and boredom (64.5%) were most prevalent, followed by sleeplessness (51.3%), depression (48.2%) and fear (34.3%). RMG workers from the factories located in Chattogram (a peripheral region compared to Dhaka) reported poorer physical and psychological health outcomes than those working in factories in Dhaka (the capital city of Bangladesh). Overall, compared to males, female RMG workers were more likely to be vulnerable to both physical and psychological health outcomes. Conclusion. This study aimed to describe the tinnitus severity in patients with chronic otitis media (COM) and describe the sociodemographic and clinical variables associated with tinnitus severity. Cross-sectional study. Two otology-referral centers in Bogotá (Colombia) were included. Sociodemographic, clinical associated factors and quality of life questionnaires were applied. Otoscopic evaluation and audiometric data were collected. About 231 adults with COM. Up to 51.5% of the patients reported severe tinnitus discomfort, 21.7% moderate discomfort, and 26.8% minor discomfort. Factor associated with increased tinnitus severity in patients with COM were older age (aOR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.01–1.05), higher education (aOR: 2.24; 95% CI: 1.03–4.87), ear discharge during childhood (aOR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.02–3.45), cholesteatoma in one ear (aOR: 2.26; 95% CI: 1.05–4.88), and pure-tone air average over 15 dB (aOR: 2.08; 95% CI: 1.28–3.36). Differences of 10-points in symptoms severity and 15-points in the total score of the "Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media Questionnaire-12" were found between the tinnitus severity groups. Our results highlight the need for further research on the associated factors of tinnitus severity on COM patients. We assessed fidelity of delivery and participant engagement in the implementation of a community paramedic coach-led Care Transitions Intervention (CTI) program adapted for use following emergency department (ED) visits. The adapted CTI for ED-to-home transitions was implemented at three university-affiliated hospitals in two cities from 2016 to 2019. Participants were aged ≥60 years old and discharged from the ED within 24 hours of arrival. In the current analysis, participants had to have received the CTI. Community paramedic coaches collected data on program delivery and participant characteristics at each transition contact via inventories and assessments. Participants provided commentary on the acceptability of the adapted CTI. Using a multimethod approach, the CTI implementation was assessed quantitatively for site- and coach-level differences. Qualitatively, barriers to implementation and participant satisfaction with the CTI were thematically analyzed. Of the 863 patient participants, 726 (84.1%) completed their home visits. Cancellations were usually patient-generated (94.9%). Most planned follow-up visits were successfully completed (94.6%). Content on the planning for red flags and post-discharge goal setting was discussed with high rates of fidelity overall (95% and greater), while content on outpatient follow-up was lower overall (75%). Differences in service delivery between the two sites existed for the in-person visit and the first phone follow-up, but the differences narrowed as the study progressed. Participants showed a 24.6% increase in patient activation (i.e., behavioral adoption) over the 30-day study period (p < 0.001). Overall, participants reported that the program was beneficial for managing their health, the quality of coaching was high, and that the program should continue. Not all participants felt that they needed the program. Community paramedic coaches reported barriers to CTI delivery due to patient medical problems and difficulties with phone visit coordination. Coaches also noted refusal to communicate or engage with the intervention as an implementation barrier. Community paramedic coaches delivered the adapted CTI with high fidelity across geographically distant sites and successfully facilitated participant engagement, highlighting community paramedics as an effective resource for implementing such patient-centered interventions. In this article, we examine how humor practices on Twitter resist dominant emotion norms during an emerging disease outbreak. Humor may seem frivolous or irreverent but can constitute a powerful practice for channeling and managing difficult emotions – like anxiety and fear – during an outbreak. We find that the use of AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) and Black cultural references were widespread in Ebola-related tweets using humor. Together these communicative practices constitute Black Twitter. Humor can signal membership in Black culture while also performing and managing specific emotions in relation to epidemic risk in online spaces. Humor practices on Black Twitter were more likely to reimagine social connections despite the risks posed by the epidemic, whereas mainstream forms of humor emphasized retreat and self-isolation in response to an epidemic threat. These findings center the agency and creativity of this influential digital community while showing the variability of communication practices among a group facing disproportionate vulnerability to outbreaks and public health threats. Citizenship Education is currently interpreted as a multidimensional education, even Citizenship Education includes various disciplines related to citizenship issues. One of the actual citizenship problems is about environmental damage, because it is a problem experienced by all nations in the world. This study aimed to develop an instrument to measure students' attitudes related to students' ecological citizenship behavior as one of the outputs of Citizenship Education course in middle school. This study was using development method (R&D) which included several stages, namely preliminary research, development research, effectiveness measurement, and dissemination. The results of the expert assessment of the content and content validation test stated that the digital citizenship-based political participation instrument was assessed according to the CVI 1 (Relevant) value, while the broad-scale analysis of the questionnaire items was obtained with valid results of 26 questionnaire items with reliability value of 0.98. This study found that the instrument was relevant to measure civics learning outcomes in the form of students' ability to apply attitudes in accordance with the value of ecological citizenship. Multicomponent mind-body interventions are increasingly studied in oncology to improve patients' quality of life (QOL). However, the respective usefulness of each of their components or their long-term use by the participants are rarely assessed. In this study, 95 women with different cancer diagnoses participated in a self-hypnosis and self-care group. Different questionnaires were administrated before (T1), right after (T2), 3 to 4 months after (T3), and 1 year after (T4) the intervention. After the intervention, 97.5% of the participants regularly practiced any kind of relaxation (vs. 50% at baseline), especially hypnosis. The different components of the intervention (i.e., being in a group, hypnosis exercises during the sessions and at home, self-care tasks, and discussions during the group sessions) were all considered to be very useful (M = 6.91–7.75/10). One year after the intervention, the 10 most used techniques were mainly concrete activities to take care of oneself. This intervention seems very relevant for women who had cancer. Research has demonstrated the Head Control Scale to have almost perfect inter-rater reliability when utilized by experienced clinicians. This study examines if further clinical experience or additional training is required to use the scale for assessment of head control in a reliable and effective manner. First and second year physical and occupational therapy students were shown five videotaped subjects of varying ages and abilities in four positions (supine, prone, supported sitting, and pull to sit). Students then utilized each subscale of the HCS to rate every subject on the rating scale in each of the positions. When utilizing the kappa coefficient statistic, the inter-rater reliability among student participants was "almost perfect" on each of the subscales. Thus, the Head Control Scale was found to be reliable with no significant difference in interrater reliability when used by clinicians or students suggesting that additional training or expertise is not required to reliably use this scale in clinical practice. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterised by extreme fatigue, as well as physical and cognitive symptoms. CFS is thrice as prevalent in women than in men. To compare women with and without CFS concerning social support and participation in daily routine occupations, and to assess the relationships between the two variables among women with CFS. This study included 110 women aged 24–69: 41 were diagnosed with CFS and 64 were not diagnosed with CFS. Participants completed the Occupational Questionnaire and the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey. Women with CFS reported lower participation in instrumental activities of daily living and work occupations than women without CFS. However, they spend more time resting and enjoying it. In addition, they reported less social support than women without CFS. Positive correlations were found between the number of close friends and time spent in play and leisure occupations and a negative correlation with sleep/rest. Women with CFS participate less in IADL and work occupations and more in rest/sleep than women without CFS and their social support is attenuated. With advances in the treatment of HIV, people living with HIV (PLWH) are now expected to have a near-normal life expectancy, but challenges remain in the form of substantially poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) than the general population. Being overweight or obese may pose an additional burden in PLWH, but few studies have evaluated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and HRQoL in PLWH. This study aimed to evaluate and describe the association between HRQoL and BMI among PLWH in the US. Data were obtained from the 2018 and 2019 US National Health and Wellness Survey, an online, self-reported, general population survey. Analyses included 575 PLWH who self-reported a physician diagnosis and prescription use for the treatment of HIV, as well as 1725 propensity score matched non-HIV controls. After adjusting for age, sex, race, and comorbidities, higher BMI was associated with poorer physical (β = −0.18, p = 0.005) and general (β = −0.42, p = 0.014) HRQoL among PLWH. Additionally, PLWH reported poorer mental, physical, and general HRQoL than non-HIV controls; these relationships were not moderated by BMI. The COVID-19 pandemic affected health and well-being worldwide, but little is known about how the pandemic specifically impacted families with young children. Evidence suggests a relationship between well-being and health behaviors (diet, physical activity) and that preexisting health disparities were exacerbated during the pandemic. This project sought caregiver perspectives on pandemic impacts, overall and by race, ethnicity, urbanicity, and household income. Caregivers of 4- to 11-year-olds were randomly selected to complete a mixed-mode survey in the winter of 2021–22 to evaluate ongoing community health education and programming. Qualitative content analysis of open-ended survey responses was conducted. Data were analyzed blind to demographic characteristics; later, differences by population were explored. Survey analysis (n = 1,429, response rate 27%) identified positive and negative impacts of the pandemic on youth diet and physical activity. Caregivers, unprompted, provided responses about the interconnected impacts on mental and physical health and health behaviors. Pandemic stress was described, including reduced energy, social isolation, and "fear of spread." Significant differences by key characteristics were found. These findings reflect patterns that could underlie growing disparities. Understanding how LGBTQ+ populations experience common mental health care barriers reveals uncommon ways these barriers interact, layer, and compound to increase health disparities. This mixed methods study organised 250 open ended responses into 30 codes situated along a functional to communicative spectrum. The codes revealed sub-categories and relationships between barrier groupings which highlight ways mental health care obstacles for sexual and gender minorities span categories and are operationalised in unique ways that compound constraints. Organizing LGBTQ+ mental health care access obstacles along a continuum that spans functional barriers (i.e. time, money, transportation) to communicative ones (i.e. stigma, trust) revealed a hybrid category (i.e. providers, bureaucracy) where functional and communicative barriers overlap, mesh and operate simultaneously. Lack of access to trained mental health care providers who offer affirming, appropriate care sits at the centre of this web of constraints and as such is influential in a wide array of mental health care issues. Prioritising mental health care workforce training in LGBTQ+ specific competencies has the potential to create a 'ripple effect' that mitigates interconnected mental health care barriers throughout this spectrum. Research is lacking on body-related consequences of sexual abuse in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF), although the prevalence of abuse is high and body- and movement-oriented diagnostics and therapeutics seem warranted for this group. Body experience in adults with MID-BIF who were sexually abused (SA) and were not sexually abused (NSA) was compared using a self-report instrument, the Body Experience Questionnaire-mb, and an instrument to observe non-verbal psychomotor behaviour, the PsyMot-mb. The SA group showed significantly higher self-reported body awareness and more observed problems with body acceptance than the NSA group. No significant group differences were found for self-reported body satisfaction and body attitude. Adults with MID-BIF who were sexually abused are more aware of their body signals, but less able to adequately attend to, tolerate, and interpret these signals. Healthcare professionals caring for children with autism spectrum disorder are more likely to be emotionally and psychologically distressed because of the children's challenging behaviors. This study aimed to investigate whether social support mediates the association between coping strategies and perceived emotional and psychological distress among professionals working with children with autism spectrum disorder. Additionally, this study explored the moderating effect of autism severity on this mediation. The study's design is cross-sectional, correlational, and predictive. An online, self-administered questionnaire was used to recruit a convenience sample of 180 healthcare professionals working with children with autism spectrum disorder. The results revealed a significant mediation effect of family social support on the relationship between problem-focused coping and psychological distress for those dealing with moderate or severe autism. Likewise, there was also a significant mediation effect of family social support on the relationship between avoidant coping and psychological distress for those dealing with moderate autism. Familial social support can serve as a protective factor for healthcare professionals caring for children with autism against accumulated psychological distress. The direct effect of avoidant coping strategies on emotional distress changes depending on autism severity. The study's findings are informative to mental health nurses to create more effective coping strategies as problem-solving interventions or develop new coping strategies based on familial social support for those working with children with autism. This online randomised controlled study evaluates benefits associated with structured topic-focussed narrative writing tasks versus unstructured narrative writing tasks, monitoring to what extent tasks impact well-being, psychopathology and satisfaction. Participants were randomised to structured topic-focussed or unstructured narrative writing conditions. Structured condition consisted of Conflict Analysis (CA), a self-guided narrative-based therapeutic assessment. Unstructured conditions consisted of narrative disclosure tasks about traumatic experiences. Both conditions consisted of ten 20-minute tasks completed within one week. One hundred and three participants completed baseline measures. Eighty-two participants completed two-week follow-up measures. Repeated measure ANOVA and t-tests were used to evaluate differences over time. Follow-up data suggest that CA participants had significantly improved outcomes when compared to narrative disclosure participants. Evidence supports continued structured narrative writing research. This study explored the impact of assistive technology on the well-being of legally blind adults. In this mixed-method study, a convenience sample of 86 legally blind adults took an electronic survey. The questionnaire was comprised of demographics, use patterns, and an instrument called TENS-Interface that measured the impact of technology on well-being categories of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Descriptive statistics, reliability, power analysis and bivariate correlations were calculated using SPSS statistical software. Three participants completed follow up semi-structured interviews, which were analysed for themes of technological mediation using NVivo 12 software. The TENS-Interface was validated for use with a legally blind population. Descriptive statistics showed a higher mean for autonomy than competence or relatedness. Braille was positively correlated to both autonomy and competence, while screen reader proficiency was related to competence. Daily use of social media, email, instant messaging, and video calls were correlated to relatedness. The technological devices used by interview participants were analysed for technological mediation. Training was identified as an additional theme. Recommendations for practice include providing training to legally blind adults in screen reader use and braille use to support well-being via competence and autonomy. Training is also recommended for this population in the use of social media, email, and video calls to promote well-being through opportunities for relatedness. Further research is recommended to explore instructional methods that are not only efficient, but also meaningful for older adults in the position of losing their vision. Providing access to braille instruction and braille assistive technology equipment can promote legally blind adults' well-being by supporting their basic needs for both competence and autonomy. Providing training in screen reader use can promote legally blind adults' well-being by supporting their basic need for competence. Providing training in use of email, social media, video calls, and instant messaging can promote legally blind adults' well-being by supporting their basic need for relatedness. Although South Korea has been relatively successful in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, there were controversies surrounding the negative social consequences (SC) associated with the infection, such as breach of privacy in contact tracing and stigmatization of patients. We examined how individuals' thinking about the SC of COVID-19 infection influenced preventive intention through this specific case, the early phase of the pandemic in South Korea (March, 2020) when concerns regarding SC were very high but vaccines were not available. We theoretically investigated the path from information exposure about COVID-19, worry and risk perception about SC of COVID-19, attitudes/norms/self-efficacy, and preventive intention. An online survey of 805 South Koreans revealed that information exposure about COVID-19 was positively associated with worry and risk perception about the SC, which indirectly predicted preventive intention through attitudes/norms/self-efficacy. As COVID-19 is a new disease, people learned about it from various sources, and contemplated (worry and risk perception) its negative social outcomes. To avoid such negative SC, they might have changed their beliefs toward preventive behavior, which influenced preventive intention. Given that both worry (affective–cognitive state) and risk perception (cognitive evaluation) are related to thinking activities, the findings suggest that individuals' thinking about negative SC of COVID-19 infection might have partly contributed to the success of the early South Korean quarantine model. The non-take-up of rights among social service-users is a well-known phenomenon, with grave implications. In response to it, social workers holding various roles are tasked with assisting service-users in obtaining their rights, in accordance with national policies and professional ethics. Despite its importance, research examining factors possibly connected to social workers' engagement in social rights advocacy for/with service-users is very limited, and was mostly conducted several years ago. The purpose of the present study was to explore the role of three types of such factors – organizational milieus (supervisors' support and the adequacy of the working environment); individual capacities (knowledge and skills held by social workers); and the relational aspect (the working alliance between social workers and their service-users). 247 Israeli social workers participated in the study, all employed in public social services. Data were collected using a quantitative approach via an online questionnaire. The results of the study underscore some potent correlates and predictors of social workers' engagement in advocating for social rights, in themselves and especially in the interaction between factors. With his new riddle of induction, Goodman raised a problem for enumerative induction which many have taken to show that only some 'natural' properties can be used for making inductive inferences. Arguably, however, (i) enumerative induction is not a method that scientists use for making inductive inferences in the first place. Moreover, it seems at first sight that (ii) Goodman's problem does not affect the method that scientists actually use for making such inferences—namely, classical statistics. Taken together, this would indicate that (iii) 'naturalness' is not such a relevant concept for the problem of induction, after all. I have no objections against (i) and (iii). But, contrary to (ii), I argue that classical statistics does face a version of Goodman's problem, which I call the statistical riddle of induction. Given that his problem merely is an instance of the more general problem of underdetermination, this is hardly surprising. The study sought to determine the effects of a pilot home-based science intervention on deaf and typically hearing children's conceptual understanding of science and their abilities to reason about and communicate their understanding (scientific enquiry skills). Data show that by age 5 years a science attainment gap exists between deaf children and those typically hearing yet early interventions with deaf children typically neglect the development of science. We created an intervention to support caregivers (N = 17) to incorporate the language of science into their daily routines. Participants were placed into a control or intervention group; within each group were caregivers of deaf and typically hearing children. Over a period of 13 months, caregivers completed five assessments (each at two different time points); four on their child's understanding of concepts and one on their developing scientific enquiry skills. All caregivers, irrespective of group, reported positive gains in their child's conceptual understanding. Caregivers of deaf children reported greater gains in scientific enquiry skills than those of typically hearing children. This offers preliminary evidence to suggest that longer-term interventions may provide an opportunity to narrow the attainment gap between deaf and typically hearing children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physical functioning after discharge from specialized rehabilitation is a concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate functioning and health after a long period of community living in participants with severe disability after stroke. An observational, longitudinal follow-up design was used to investigate 60 participants from a randomized controlled trial. Assessment tools: Short Form 36 health-survey, Functional Ambulation Categories, EU Walking, 10 Meter Walk Test, and questions concerning health and walking ability. Forty-seven participants (78%) responded, mean age 51.2 years. Non-respondents demonstrated poorer function at hospital discharge. At follow-up, median 11.9 months after discharge, all but three respondents lived in their own home, and 85% received physiotherapy. Twenty-nine (64%) perceived their health as good to excellent, while four (9%) reported poor health. Activities requiring substantial strength and endurance were typically restricted. Most participants (83%) were independent walkers, and fewer (a 27% reduction) used a wheelchair. Among independent walkers, mean walking speed improved by 0.14 m/s. Time elapsed since hospital discharge was not found to correlate with change in walking speed. This study demonstrates maintenance or progress in important aspects of functioning and health in most participants at long-term follow-up, but not in all. Patients with severe disability after stroke may maintain or improve their physical functioning and health after a long period of community living, when they receive continuous individualized rehabilitation including physiotherapy. Patients who maintain or improve walking ability and walking speed after living for a long time in the community, may still need assistance with daily activities, especially if they require substantial muscle strength and endurance. Expectations to long-term functional outcomes after institutional followed by community rehabilitation for patients after stroke, should be considered in light of functional status at hospital discharge. To assess the benefits of the Ida Institute's Why improve my hearing? Telecare Tool used before the initial hearing assessment appointment. A prospective, single-blind randomised clinical trial with two arms: (i) Why improve my hearing? Telecare Tool intervention, and (ii) standard care control. Adults with hearing loss were recruited from two Audiology Services within the United Kingdom's publicly-funded National Health Service. Of 461 individuals assessed for eligibility, 57 were eligible to participate. Measure of Audiologic Rehabilitation Self-efficacy for Hearing Aids (primary outcome) scores did not differ between groups from baseline to post-assessment (Mean change [Δ]= −2.28; 95% confidence interval [CI]= −6.70, 2.15, p=.307) and 10-weeks follow-up (Mean Δ= −2.69; 95% CI= −9.52, 4.15, p =.434). However, Short Form Patient Activation Measure scores significantly improved in the intervention group compared to the control group from baseline to post-assessment (Mean Δ= −6.06, 95% CI= −11.31, −0.82, p =.024, ES=.61) and 10-weeks follow-up (Mean Δ= −9.87, 95% CI= −15.34, −4.40, p =.001, ES= −.97). This study demonstrates that while a patient-centred telecare intervention completed before management decisions may not improve an individual's self-efficacy to manage their hearing loss, it can lead to improvements in readiness. The research-oriented objective of this study was to document the effectiveness of online support for hearing aid (HA) users compared with traditional support. This study is a randomised controlled trial with parallel group design. The research-oriented objectives were evaluated using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE) and the Communication Strategies Scale (CSS) at baseline and immediately postintervention. Selected clients at five different clinics were randomised to an intervention group (n = 78) that took part in online hearing support and a control group (n = 58) that received standard care. The analyses (intention-to-treat) showed statistically significant improvements in the HHIE-total and Emotional subscale scores for the intervention group compared with the control group. The intervention group also showed significantly greater improvement in the CSS-total and Verbal and Nonverbal subscale scores. A subgroup analysis was performed including two groups: HA use <1 year and HA use >1 year. A statistically significant improvement was found for the HA users >1 year compared with HA use <1 year. The Little Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (LDCDQ) is a parental questionnaire designed to identify preschool children at risk of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the LDCDQ for French European informants (Little Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire-French European [LDCDQ-FE]) and to undertake a pilot examination of its psychometric properties on a French sample. A thorough process of cultural adaptation was completed. The psychometric properties were examined with a sample of 154 French children aged to 5y11m (control = 121; clinically referred = 33). A sub-group of 34 children was assessed using the MABC-2 to measure convergent validity. Principal component analysis demonstrated a four-component structure, accounting for 67.5% of the variance. Internal consistency was acceptable to good (α = 0.74–0.89). Significant correlation between the LDCDQ-FE and the MABC-2 total scores showed convergent validity. Discriminant validity was supported by significant score differences between the clinically referred and a matched control sub-group. Using ROC curves, a cutoff of 67 was proposed for a sensitivity of 81.3% and a specificity of 77.8%. Results show initial evidence of the psychometric properties of the LDCDQ-FE and are encouraging of its use to identify young preschoolers at risk for DCD. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a home-based self-management intervention in community-dwelling patients with early Parkinson's diseases (PD). A randomized-controlled design. Thirty-two patients participated (15=intervention, 17=control), and the intervention group received 16 weeks of the intervention. Physical activity and non-motor symptoms improved more in the intervention group than in the control group. Home-based self-management intervention was effective in improving physical activity and non-motor symptoms for them. Home-based intervention – comprising education, telephone counseling, smartphone-based message and information, and smart wearable devices – was feasible for patients with early PD. Using a cross-sectional survey design, this study aims to explore secondary traumatic stress (STS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among foster parents. Forty-six foster parents completed the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and a number of items representing demographics, foster parent experiences, and help-seeking. Multiple regression results indicate that both STS and PTG were higher among those who reported religious/spiritual help-seeking. In addition, STS was significantly higher among foster parents who were young and White. FindMyApps is a web-based selection-tool and errorless learning training program to help people with mild dementia/Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and caregivers find user-friendly apps. In preparation of a definitive trial, the impact and feasibility of the FindMyApps intervention on self-management and engagement in meaningful activities, including social participation, was explored. An exploratory pilot randomised controlled trial (trial registration approval number: NL7210) with pre/post measurements was conducted with community-dwelling people with mild dementia/MCI and their caregivers (n = 59) in the Netherlands. Dyads in the experimental group (n = 28) received training to use the tablet and FindMyApps, and the errorless learning method was taught to their caregivers. Control group dyads (n = 31) received a tablet (without FindMyApps), instructions on tablet-use and links to dementia-friendly apps. Validated instruments were used to assess person with dementia's self-management, meaningful activities and social participation, caregiver's sense of competence and both their quality of life. No statistical significant group differences on the outcomes were found. Small to moderate effect-sizes in favour of the FindMyApps group were found for self-management and social participation. Caregivers tended to have more positive care experiences. Subgroup analyses showed that people older than 70 benefitted more from FindMyApps regarding self-management and higher educated people benefitted more regarding social participation. FindMyApps is feasible for the target group and may have potential to improve self-management and social participation. For a future definitive effectiveness trial a larger sample size is recommended, as well as taking into account the possible impact of education and age. The FindMyApps program is feasible for people with dementia/MCI and may have potential to improve their self-management and social participation. Informal caregivers may develop a more positive care experience when utilizing FindMyApps to find suitable apps for self-management and social participation for the person with dementia/MCI. The purpose of this cross-sectional survey was to examine the quality of life and level of burden experienced by mothers of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (n = 199). Data was collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Zarit Burden Interview Scale (ZBIS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instruments. A simple descriptive analysis was conducted, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was utilized to determine the correlation among variables. Most respondents (68.9%) reported moderate to severe burden on the ZBIS. Across age groups, statistically significant, negative correlations were found between burden and physical health (r = −0.371, p < 0.001), social relationships (r = −0.389, p < 0.001), psychological health (r = −0.445, p < 0.001) and environment (r = −0.438, p < 0.001). Mothers of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes reported an inverse relationship between burden and quality of life influenced by the occupation of caregiving. Occupational therapy practitioners can address strategies to reduce caregiver burden and improve mothers' quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
