Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is a native American species. Despite its historical importance as an insect pest in Eucalyptus plantations, more information is needed regarding the population diversity, demography, and climatic variables associated with its distribution in different regions of Brazil. We used a phylogeographic approach to infer the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and demographic parameters of T. arnobia. We also conducted an ecological niche modeling (ENM) to predict suitable areas for T. arnobia occurrence in Brazil and other countries worldwide. Although T. arnobia populations have low genetic diversity in Brazil, we identified mitochondrial haplogroups predominating in different Brazilian regions and high ФST and ФCT values in AMOVA, suggesting a low frequency of insect movement among these regions. These results indicate that outbreaks of T. arnobia in Eucalyptus areas in different regions of Brazil are associated with local or regional populations, with no significant contribution from long-distance dispersal from different regions or biomes, suggesting that pest management strategies would be implemented on a regional scale. In Brazil, the demographic and spatial expansion signals of T. arnobia seem to be associated with the history of geographical expansion of Eucalyptus plantations, a new sustainable host for this species. ENM indicated that isothermality and annual rainfall are critical climatic factors for the occurrence of T. arnobia in tropical and subtropical areas in the Americas. Despite the worldwide occurrence and high genetic diversity of Bartonella spp. in bats, few studies investigate their occurrence in bat-associated mites. To date, 26 species of Macronyssidae mite species have been reported from Brazil, and 15 of which were found parasitizing bats. The present study aimed to investigate the presence of Bartonella DNA in bat-associated macronyssid mites from Brazil. For this purpose, 393 macronyssid specimens were selected by convenience from the tissue bank of the Acari Collection of the Instituto Butantan (IBSP). These mites were collected from 14 different bat species in three different Brazilian States (Minas Gerais, Paraná, and Rio de Janeiro). Out of 165 mites positive in the PCR for the endogenous 18S rRNA gene, only eight were positive in the qPCR for Bartonella spp. based on the nuoG gene, and we were able to obtain two sequences base in this same gene, and one sequence based on the 16S rRNA gene. The phylogenetic inference based on the nuoG gene grouped the obtained sequences with Bartonella genotypes previously detected in bats and associated bat flies, while the phylogeny based on the 16S rRNA grouped the obtained sequence in the same clade of Bartonella genotypes previously detected in Dermanyssus gallinae. This manuscript presents a new report on the in vitro antimicrobial photo-inactivation of foodborne microorganisms (Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes) using tetra-cationic porphyrins. Isomeric tetra-cationic porphyrins (3MeTPyP, 4MeTPyP, 3PtTPyP, and 4PtTPyP) were tested, and antimicrobial activity assays were performed at specific photosensitizer concentrations under dark and white-light LED irradiation conditions. Among the tested bacterial strains, 4MeTPyP exhibited the highest efficiency, inhibiting bacterial growth within just 60 min at low concentrations (17.5 μM). The minimal inhibitory concentration of 4MeTPyP increased when reactive oxygen species scavengers were present, indicating the significant involvement of singlet oxygen species in the photooxidation mechanism. Furthermore, the checkerboard assay testing the association of 4MeTPyP showed an indifferent effect. Battery poultry houses are subject to infestations by pests, such as the ectoparasitic mites Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) and Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese, 1888) which are hematophagous and can cause skin lesions, stress, and even death of hens, leading to significant economic losses. Recent European studies have shown that these mites can also work as vectors of pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, due to the absence of records on the association between D. gallinae and O. bursa and pathogenic microorganisms in Brazil, the present study aimed to identify pathogenic bacteria through a metagenomics analysis associated with mites collected from a poultry house located in a rural area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and direct from a skin' person that lives in a farm in the interior of the state of São Paulo (Brazil). For the material collected in Rio Grande do Sul, a higher predominance of endosymbiotic bacteria, and different species of the pathogenic bacteria species Bartonella was observed. On the other hand, some enterobacteria were identified from O. bursa samples, but the amount was not high enough to identify the species. Additionally, the endosymbiotic Wolbachia spp. was identified in both O. bursa samples (pooled and individuals). Besides the detection of Wolbachia, in the individual O. bursa microbiome, we detected Spiroplasma spp. and 'Candidatus Cardinium'. This is the first time that a microbiome study has been made for the species D. gallinae and O. bursa in Brazil, as well as the first time that Wolbachia, Spiroplasma and 'Candidatus Cardinium' was detected in O. bursa samples. There are several ways to relieve welding residual stresses. The most commonly used and the only standardized method is the post-weld heat treatment. However, this method is time-consuming and costly, which necessitates exploring other approaches that can ensure satisfactory results in a faster and more economical manner. In this context, the industry has gradually adopted relief of residual stresses through vibration. Therefore, this study aims to relieve welding residual stresses in thick plates to evaluate whether the position of the excitation source, whether parallel or coincident with the welded plates, influences the expected results. Additionally, it seeks to determine whether the best results are obtained when vibration stress relief is performed simultaneously with welding or after the completion of the process. It was verified that the parallel position presented a maximum reduction of 63.7% in residual stresses when performed after welding, while the parallel and coincident position during the welding reduced a maximum of 2.5% and 56.0% of residual stresses, respectively. Furthermore, mechanical tests are conducted to determine the influence of these processes on mechanical properties. The results indicated that performed vibration after welding is more efficient, and the vibration motor's position significantly influences the results. One invasive species that decreases citrus fruit yield is the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama. The psyllids are the carriers of Candidatus Liberibacter species, the pathogen that causes citrus greening disease (commonly called huanglongbing, or HLB), which is the most devastating citrus disease in the world. Originally from Southeast Asia, the Asian citrus psyllid, a highly invasive species, is spreading rapidly throughout the world. Regarding geographical distribution and population growth, climate change will aggravate its impacts on many citrus agroecosystems. However, limited information on the mechanisms underpinning the pest's invasion impedes the formulation of biosecurity risk measures. We highlight the potential suitable areas for D. citri, combining their climatic requirements, temperature and humidity, in the CLIMEX model. The model's performance was high, and it can be utilized for biosecurity risk assessment, as only 2.82% of the 496 known occurrence spots were located in areas deemed unsuitable by the model's fit. The potential habitat suitability for D. citri covered all continents except Antarctica, and the suitability ranges from unsuitable (EI < 0) to highly suitable areas (EI ≥ 30). Our model predicted suitable areas outside its known native and invaded regions, especially in Africa, South America, and Oceania. Most of these regions will remain suitable for D. citri in the future. The age estimation of an adult using methods accessible to the forensic routine is a goal pursued by forensic experts. Cameriere, Ferrante and Cingolani (2004) proposed the use of the pulp/tooth area ratio of canine teeth as a promising variable, but its reliability has shown conflicting results in the scientific literature. This article aimed to carry out a systematic review with meta-analysis to verify whether the pulp/tooth area ratio of canine teeth includes a variable that can be used alone to estimate dental age in adults. A systematic search was carried out in six databases using keywords related to the theme in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The study selection process followed pre-established eligibility criteria. Assessments were carried out regarding risk of bias and publication bias of selected studies, and meta-analysis was carried out considering Pearson's correlation coefficient between pulp/tooth area ratio and chronological age as effect measure. Most selected studies showed low risk of bias; no publication bias was found when all studies were considered, and potential publication bias was found when outliers were removed. Despite the high heterogeneity among studies and the need for more research, it could be observed that the pulp/tooth area ratio has strong negative correlation with chronological age, and the pulp/tooth area ratio could be derived from both periapical radiographs and orthopantomographs. Therefore, it is suggested that there is scientific evidence that the pulp/tooth area ratio obtained from canine teeth is reliable for dental age estimation in adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In general, two characteristics are ever present in NMR-based metabolomics studies: (1) they are assays aiming to classify the samples in different groups, and (2) the number of samples is smaller than the feature (chemical shift) number. It is also common to observe imbalanced datasets due to the sampling method and/or inclusion criteria. These situations can cause overfitting. However, appropriate feature selection and classification methods can be useful to solve this issue. Objectives: Investigate the performance of metabolomics models built from the association between feature selectors, the absence of feature selection, and classification algorithms, as well as use the best performance model as an NMR-based metabolomic method for prostate cancer diagnosis. Methods: We evaluated the performance of NMR-based metabolomics models for prostate cancer diagnosis using seven feature selectors and five classification formalisms. We also obtained metabolomics models without feature selection. In this study, thirty-eight volunteers with a positive diagnosis of prostate cancer and twenty-three healthy volunteers were enrolled. Results: Thirty-eight models obtained were evaluated using AUROC, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and kappa's index values. The best result was obtained when Genetic Algorithm was used with Linear Discriminant Analysis with 0.92 sensitivity, 0.83 specificity, and 0.88 accuracy. Conclusion: The results show that the pick of a proper feature selection method and classification model, and a resampling method can avoid overfitting in a small metabolomic dataset. Objectives: This cross-sectional school-based study explored the influence of malocclusion on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain complaints, and whether this association would be mediated by sleep bruxism in a representative sample of 7- to 8-year-old children. Methods: Path analysis estimated direct, indirect, and total effects of occlusal features on sleep bruxism and TMD pain in 7- to 8-year-old children. Occlusal features were assessed with Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), orofacial pain complaints using the TMD pain screener, possible sleep bruxism based on self-reports, and probable sleep bruxism based on self-reports combined with clinical findings. Structural equation modeling analyzed data with confounding factors. Results: From 580 participants, possible sleep bruxism was observed in 136 children (31.5%), probable sleep bruxism in 30 children (6.7%), and TMD pain complaints in 78 children (13.8%). Malocclusion had no direct effect on either possible sleep bruxism [standardized coefficient (SC) 0.000; p = 0.992], or TMD pain complaints (SC – 0.01; p = 0.740). When probable sleep bruxism was set as the mediator of interest, malocclusion did not directly affect probable sleep bruxism (SC 0.01; p = 0.766), nor TMD pain complaints (SC – 0.02; p = 0.515). A direct effect of probable sleep bruxism on TMD pain complaints was observed with an SC of 0.60 (p < 0.001). However, in neither case, malocclusion indirectly affected TMD pain complaints via bruxism. Conclusion: Malocclusion in 7- to 8-year-old children did not directly influence possible or probable sleep bruxism or TMD pain complaints. Instead, probable sleep bruxism was strongly associated with TMD pain complaints. Clinical significance: The impact of occlusal features on TMD pain complaints and bruxism has been a long-standing controversy in dentistry. However, the scientific literature linking this association may be inconsistent, mainly due to biased sample selection methods with inadequate consideration of confounders. Purpose: To determine whether hypercapnia is associated with risk of hospital readmission related to anorexia nervosa (AN) in children and adolescents. Methods: We performed a prospective study of patients ≤ 18 years old admitted due to AN decompensation from November 2018 to October 2019. Both subtypes of AN, restricting subtype (AN-R) and binge-eating/purging subtype (AN-BP), were included. Study participants were evaluated upon admission, at discharge and six months after discharge. T-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests was used to compare means values. Pearson or Spearman correlations were used to measure the association between two variables. Logistic regression models were developed to evaluate the relationship between scoring methods and readmission. Results: Of the 154 persons admitted during the study period, 131 met the inclusion criteria. Median age was 15.1 years. At admission, 71% of participants were malnourished and 33 (25%) had been previously admitted. We observed a marked decrease in venous pH and stable pCO2 elevation during follow-up period. Hypercapnia at discharge was associated with a twofold increased likelihood of readmission and the odds of readmission increased as discharge pCO2 rose. These findings did not depend on AN subtype or participant sex. Electrolytes persisted within the normal range. Conclusion: Hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis are common alterations in children and adolescents hospitalized due to AN decompensation. Hypercapnia persists for at least 6 months after discharge despite clinical improvement and is associated with higher odds of readmission. This is the first study to identify an abnormal laboratory finding as a potential predictor of readmission in AN. Level of evidence: IV: Multiple time series without intervention. Brassica napus, a versatile crop with significant socioeconomic importance, serves as a valuable source of nutrition for humans and animals while also being utilized in biodiesel production. The expansion potential of B. napus is profoundly influenced by climatic variations, yet there remains a scarcity of studies investigating the correlation between climatic factors and its distribution. This research employs CLIMEX to identify the current and future ecological niches of B. napus under the RCP 8.5 emission scenario, utilizing the Access 1.0 and CNRM-CM5 models for the time frame of 2040–2059. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis of parameters was conducted to determine the primary climatic factors affecting B. napus distribution and model responsiveness. The simulated outcomes demonstrate a satisfactory alignment with the known current distribution of B. napus, with 98% of occurrence records classified as having medium to high climatic suitability. However, the species displays high sensitivity to thermal parameters, thereby suggesting that temperature increases could trigger shifts in suitable and unsuitable areas for B. napus, impacting regions such as Canada, China, Brazil, and the United States. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection and leads from asymptomatic to severe outcomes. The recurrence of the COVID-19 has been described, however, mechanisms involved remains unclear. Thus, the work aimed to investigate the role of multifunctional T cells in patients with recurrent COVID-19. We evaluated clinical characteristics, presence of anti-S1 and anti-Nucleocapsid IgG in patients' sera, and multifunctional T cells (for IFN-γ, IL-2, and TNF-α) in patients with multiple episodes of COVID-19 and controls. Data demonstrate that patients with recurrent COVID-19 have a T cell pattern predominantly related to IFN-γ production. Also, patients with COVID-19 history and absence of anti-S1 IgG had lower levels of CD4+ IFN + IL-2 + TNF + T cells independently of number of disease episodes. Complementary, vaccination changed the patterns of T cells phenotypes and induced IgG seroconversion, despite not induce higher levels of multifunctional T cells in all patients. In conclusion, the data suggest that recurrent disease is related to early-disease T cell profile and absence of anti-S1 IgG is related to lower multifunctional CD4 T cell response, what suggests possibility of new episodes of COVID-19 in these patients. In the general setting of twisted second quantization (including Bose/Fermi second quantization, S-symmetric Fock spaces, and full Fock spaces from free probability as special cases), von Neumann algebras on twisted Fock spaces are analyzed. These twisted Araki-Woods algebras L T (H) depend on the twist operator T and a standard subspace H in the one-particle space. Under a compatibility assumption on T and H, it is proven that the Fock vacuum is cyclic and separating for L T (H) if and only if T satisfies a standard subspace version of crossing symmetry and the Yang-Baxter equation (braid equation). In this case, the Tomita-Takesaki modular data are explicitly determined. Inclusions L T (K) ⊂ L T (H) of twisted Araki-Woods algebras are analyzed in two cases: If the inclusion is half-sided modular and the twist satisfies a norm bound, it is shown to be singular. If the inclusion of underlying standard subspaces K ⊂ H satisfies an L 2 -nuclearity condition, L T (K) ⊂ L T (H) has type III relative commutant for suitable twists T. Residual stresses arising from welding can adversely affect the mechanical properties of welded structures. Stress relief techniques involving thermal or mechanical methods are commonly employed to mitigate these stresses and improve the performance of welded structures. This study involved subjecting welded plates of ASTM A131 EH36 marine steel to thermal and vibrational stress relief methods, followed by conducting mechanical tests to evaluate the impact of stress relief on tensile, bending, microhardness, and toughness properties. Thermal treatment is a consolidated and already standardized method. On the other hand, vibrational treatment for stress relief is a method that lacks studies and standards, but it may become an excellent alternative to traditional thermal treatment. The aim is to compare the results obtained from each method, both with and without stress relief, including vibration welding conditioning. Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and Palmistichus elaeisis (Delvare & LaSalle) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are commercially used in the biological control of defoliating lepidopterans in Brazil. The combination of these natural enemies in integrated pest management systems and the risks of intraguild interactions in simultaneous releases were evaluated in the laboratory. The objective was to verify the possible biological effects of intraguild interaction between P. nigrispinus and P. elaeisis. Pupae of natural host Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) and of the alternative host Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), aged 24 hours, were individualized and exposed to parasitism by females of P. elaeisis for 24 hours. The selectivity of P. nigrispinus to parasitized prey was tested with T. arnobia, T. molitor and with volatile compounds extracted from pupae parasitized or healthy. The biomass of T. molitor pupae, healthy or parasitized by P. elaeisis (at one, nine or 18 days), consumed by P. nigrispinus was calculated. The selectivity of each P. nigrispinus female for healthy or parasitized pupae was observed and the effect on the biology of the predator was analysed. Podisus nigrispinus preferred healthy prey to those with more than one day of parasitism and was attracted to pupae washed with hexane extract from healthy hosts. The body mass of this predator was higher when feeding on healthy pupae. The intraguild interaction between P. nigrispinus and P. elaeisis is symmetrical, indicating that these natural enemies can be used, simultaneously, in the integrated management of defoliating caterpillars without reducing their efficiency. The importance of species that connect the different types of interactions is becoming increasingly recognized, and this role may be related to specific attributes of these species. Multilayer networks have two or more layers, which represent different types of interactions, for example, between different parasites and hosts that are nonetheless connected. The understanding of the ecological relationship between bats, ectoparasites, and vector-borne bacteria could shed some light on the complex transmission cycles of these pathogens. In this study, we investigated a multilayer network in Brazil formed by interactions between bat-bacteria, bat-ectoparasite, and ectoparasite-bacteria, and asked how these interactions overlap considering different groups and transmission modes. The multilayer network was composed of 31 nodes (12 bat species, 14 ectoparasite species, and five bacteria genera) and 334 links, distributed over three layers. The multilayer network has low modularity and shows a core-periphery organization, that is, composed of a few generalist species with many interactions and many specialist species participating in few interactions in the multilayer network. The three layers were needed to accurately describe the multilayer structure, while aggregation leads to loss of information. Our findings also demonstrated that the multilayer network is influenced by a specific set of species that can easily be connected to the behavior, life cycle, and type of existing interactions of these species. Four bat species (Artibeus lituratus, A. planirostris, Phyllostomus discolor, and Platyrrhinus lineatus), one ectoparasite species (Steatonyssus) and three bacteria genera (Ehrlichia, hemotropic Mycoplasma and Neorickettsia) are the most important species for the multilayer network structure. Finally, our study brings an ecological perspective under a multilayer network approach on the interactions between bats, ectoparasites, and pathogens. By using a multilayer approach (different types of interactions), it was possible to better understand these different ecological interactions and how they affect each other, advancing our knowledge on the role of bats and ectoparasites as potential pathogen vectors and reservoirs, as well as the modes of transmission of these pathogens. The globalisation of trade and environmental and health requirements, supported by the physical–chemical characterisation of relevant items, have promoted relevant evolutions on how test laboratories report results from their analysis. The relevance of reporting measurement results from the characterisation of these items with the measurement uncertainty is unquestionable to guarantee determinations are adequately uncertain and the objective interpretation of analytical information. The latest edition of the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, which supports the International Accreditation of test laboratories, even mentions the need to manage the impact of measurement uncertainty in the risk of false conformity assessments. Some accreditation bodies have considered this novelty and the reiteration that measurement results should be reported with the measurement uncertainty to make reporting the measurement uncertainty mandatory. This correct interpretation of the accreditation standard and society's expectations regarding the role of laboratories in the management of the most relevant interests of the community should be generalised. The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Lower, 1862) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of significant economic importance in Central America and Florida (USA). This study was carried out to examine the influence of climate change on the space–time distribution of A. suspensa on temporal and spatial scales. The CLIMEX software was used to model the current distribution and for climate change. The future distribution was performed using two global climate models (GCMs), CSIRO-Mk3.0 (CS) and MIROC-H (MR), under the emission scenarios (SRES) A2 and A1B for the years 2050, 2080, and 2100. The results indicate a low potential for global distribution of A. suspensa in all scenarios studied. However, tropical areas were identified with high climatic suitability for A. suspensa in South America, Central America, Africa, and Oceania until the end of the century. Projections of areas with climatic suitability for A. suspensa can provide helpful information to develop preventive strategies of phytosanitary management avoiding economic impacts with the introduction of the species. Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a promising alternative for supplementing oyster mushroom substrate, replacing conventional cereal bran. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the production of Pleurotus ostreatus supplemented with Lentinula edodes' SMS, through the nutritional analysis of the substrate. Wheat straw was used as substrate and supplemented with rice bran (RB) or SMS in 0%, 7%,15% and 30%. Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Zn, Cu and Fe contents of the cultivation substrates (before and after harvest) were determined through atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Mycelial growth (cm²/day), mycelial time colonization (days), number of clusters, number of pileus, average clusters weight (g), pileus lenght (cm) and width (cm), productivity (1st, 2nd and 3rd flush) (%), biological efficiency (%) of mushrooms were evaluated. Results indicated mycelial growth was higher (0.87 cm²/day compared to the Control) when the substrate was supplemented regardless of the source. The proportions of 15% of SMS achieved the highest biological efficiency (107% − 15% SMS versus 66% - Control). The only nutrients that showed differences in absorption were Ca, K and Mn, in which substrates supplemented with SMS had greater absorption of Ca (5.37 g.kg− 1 versus 1.94 g.kg− 1 in Control) while substrates supplemented with RB absorbed more K (6.56 g.kg− 1 versus 3.74 g.kg− 1 in Control). The mineral composition of the substrate has a direct impact on the growth and yield of P. ostreatus, highlighting the potential of SMS as a alternative to traditional bran supplementation. Due to the rapid development of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 as well as the real threat of new coronavirus zoonosis events, the development of a preventive vaccine with a broader scope of functionality is highly desirable. Previously, we reported the functionality of a nasal formulation containing the nucleocapsid protein and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 combined with the ODN-39M adjuvant. This combination induced cross-reactive immunity in mucosal and systemic compartments at the sarbecovirus level. In the present study, we explored the magnitude of the immunity generated in BALB/c mice by the same formulation with alum added as an additional adjuvant, to enhance the humoral immunity against the two antigens. Animals were immunized with three doses of the bivalent formulation, administered by subcutaneous route. Humoral immunity was tested by ELISA, and the neutralizing capacity of the resulting antibodies (Abs) was evaluated using a surrogate test and a vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) pseudovirus-based assay. Cell-mediated immunity was also investigated using an IFN-γ ELISpot assay. High levels of antibodies against both antigens (N and RBD) were obtained upon immunization. Anti-RBD Abs with neutralizing capacity reacted with the RBD of three SARS-CoV-2 variants tested, including Omicron. Abs recognizing the nucleocapsid proteins of SARS-CoV-1 and the SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron variants were also detected. Taken together, these results suggest that this bivalent formulation could be an attractive component of a pancorona vaccine able to broaden the scope of humoral immunity against both antigens. Growth retardants have been used as an anti-lodging to reduce shoot growth by blocking the gibberellins biosynthesis without decreasing yield. We hypothesized that the type and dosage of growth retardants vary in effectiveness on reducing vegetative growth and increasing seed yield, as well as that prohexadione calcium (Pro-Ca) may also be an effective growth retardant for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The goal of this study was to assess the effects of increasing rates of paclobutrazol (PBZ), mepiquat chloride (MC), and Pro-Ca on common bean morphophysiological and yield traits, based on a field experiment carried out in Vitória da Conquista, northeastern Brazil. Morphophysiological traits were assessed 14 and 38 days after application (DAA) of regulators, and yield traits were assessed at the end of the crop cycle. There was a positive relationship between increasing rates of regulators and decrease in stem length mainly up to 14 DAA, and Pro-Ca was more effective than the other regulators. At 38 DAA, increase in shoot dry mass was recorded when PBZ and MC were sprayed at rates from 100 to 400 g a.i. ha−1. Pro-Ca application increased the height of first pod insertion. Low rates of PBZ (25–50 g a.i. ha−1) increased, whereas high rates of Pro-Ca (200 and 400 g a.i. ha−1) tended to decrease the number of pods per plant. MC reduced the number of empty pods and increased the number of seeds per pod. The 100-seed weight increased up to a peak with an estimated rate of 162.5 g a.i. ha−1 for PBZ, 151.0 g a.i. ha−1 for MC, and 211.8 g a.i. ha−1 for Pro-Ca. PBZ and MC marginally increased seed yield with peaks at the estimated rates of 190.8 and 212.4 g a.i. ha−1, respectively, whereas rates of Pro-Ca greater than 50 g a.i. ha−1 decreased seed yield. The regulators were effective in reducing the plant size, thus mitigating lodging risks in common bean crop with highlight on Pro-Ca, but this regulator at high rates tended to reduce common bean yield. In economic terms, invasive species pose risks to human interests in management systems related to agriculture, animal health, and forestry, as they cause damage and change the composition of native species. Through modeling, ecological studies can help identify favorable climatic environments for species. Using biological factors and climate data, the CLIMEX software can forecast a species' seasonal phenology and dispersal locations across time. The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Diptera: Tephritidae), was modeled using CLIMEX to assess the variables affecting its population and dispersal processes. The results show A. suspensa climatic suitability in South America, Central America, Africa, and Oceania. The most critical adaptation happens in the Caribbean and Central America between September and December, while it happens in South America between February and April. The sensitivity analysis showed that the species is more sensitive to temperature changes. Our results were validated through field data reports. Modeling has significant implications since it may be used to develop control and monitoring methods in situations and locations with favorable climates for A. suspensa, particularly in cases when the pest is not present. The polycentric city model has gained popularity in spatial planning policy, since it is believed to overcome some of the problems often present in monocentric metropolises, ranging from congestion to difficult accessibility to jobs and services. However, the concept 'polycentric city' has a fuzzy definition and as a result, the extent to which a city is polycentric cannot be easily determined. Here, we leverage the fine spatio-temporal resolution of smart travel card data to infer urban polycentricity by examining how a city departs from a well-defined monocentric model. In particular, we analyse the human movements that arise as a result of sophisticated forms of urban structure by introducing a novel probabilistic approach which captures the complexity of these human movements. We focus on London (UK) and Seoul (South Korea) as our two case studies, and we specifically find evidence that London displays a higher degree of monocentricity than Seoul, suggesting that Seoul is likely to be more polycentric than London. Medulloblastoma is the most common type of pediatric malignant primary brain tumor, and about one-third of patients die due to disease recurrence and most survivors suffer from long-term side effects. MB is clinically, genetically, and epigenetically heterogeneous and subdivided into at least four molecular subgroups: WNT, SHH, Group 3, and Group 4. We evaluated common differentially expressed genes between a Brazilian RNA-seq GSE181293 dataset and microarray GSE85217 dataset cohort of pediatric MB samples using bioinformatics methodology in order to identify hub genes of the molecular subgroups based on PPI network construction, survival and functional analysis. The main finding was the identification of five hub genes from the WNT subgroup that are tumor suppressors, and whose lower expression is related to a worse prognosis for MB patients. Furthermore, the common genes correlated with the five tumor suppressors participate in important pathways and processes for tumor initiation and progression, as well as development and differentiation, and some of them control cell stemness and pluripotency. These genes have not yet been studied within the context of MB, representing new important elements for investigation in the search for therapeutic targets, prognostic markers or for understanding of MB biology. The phloem-limited bacteria, "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" and "Ca. L. americanus", are the causal pathogens responsible for Huanglongbing (HLB). The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is the principal vector of these "Ca. Liberibacter" species. Though Tamarixia radiata Waterston (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) has been useful in biological control programmes against D. citri, information on its global distribution remains vague. Using the Climate Change Experiment (CLIMEX) model, the potential global distribution of T. radiata under the 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s for Special Report on Emissions Scenarios A1B and A2 was defined globally. The results showed that habitat suitability for T. radiata covered Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. The model predicted climate suitable areas for T. radiata beyond its presently known native and non-native areas. The new locations predicted to have habitat suitability for T. radiata included parts of Europe and Oceania. Under the different climate change scenarios, the model predicted contraction of high habitat suitability (EI > 30) for T. radiata from the 2050s to the 2090s. The influence of temperament traits on bipolar disorder (BD) has been investigated. Both temperament traits and BD are partially genetically determined and seem to be influenced by variations in the CACNA1C gene. These variations presented a significant interactive effect with biological sex, although studies that evaluate this relationship are scarce. Here, we assessed the mediation effect of temperament traits on the relationship between two polymorphisms in the CACNA1C gene (rs1006737 and rs4765913) and BD according to sex. This is a cross-sectional study consisting of 878 Caucasian individuals (508 women and 370 men), aged 18–35, enrolled in a population-based study in the city of Pelotas, Southern Brazil. BD diagnosis was evaluated using the clinical interview MINI 5.0, and temperament traits were assessed via the application of the Affective and Emotional Composite Temperament Scale (AFECTS). Mediation models were tested using the modeling tool PROCESS (version 3.3) for SPSS. Bootstrapping-enhanced mediation analyses in women indicated that traits anger (39%) and caution (27%) mediated the association between the rs4765913 SNP and BD, while traits volition (29%), anger (35%), and caution (29%) mediated the association between the AA haplotype (rs1006737–rs4765913) and the BD. No effect was encountered for cisgender men. Our model revealed that paths from CACNA1C SNPs to BD are mediated by specific temperament traits in women, reinforcing the definition of temperament traits as endophenotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chiggers are larval ectoparasites of the Trombiculidae that can transmit pathogens to their hosts. In this study, chiggers collected from birds in Brazil were morphologically identified as Blankaartia sinnamaryi, Eutrombicula batatas, Eutrombicula daemoni, Eutrombicula goeldii, Eutrombicula tinami, and Parasecia gilbertoi. For these specimens, a beginning attempt at molecular identification were also provided, as well as, were genetically screened to detect bacterial pathogens. The species B. sinnamaryi and E. tinami were positive for Rickettsia felis-like and ‘Candidatus Rickettsia colombianensi’-like, respectively. For the other agents (Anaplasmataceae, Borrelia spp. and Orientia tsutsugamushi), the tests were negative. This is the first report of ‘Ca. The CACNA1C gene encodes the pore-forming alpha-1c subunit of L-type voltage-gated calcium channels. The calcium influx through these channels regulates the transcription of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Polymorphisms in this gene have been consistently associated with psychiatric disorders, and alterations in BDNF levels are a possible biological mechanism to explain such associations. Here, we sought to investigate the effect of the CACNA1C rs1006737 and rs4765913 polymorphisms and their haplotypes on serum BDNF concentration. We further aim to investigate the regulatory function of these SNPs and the ones linked to them. The study enrolled 641 young adults (362 women and 279 men) in a cross-sectional population-based survey. Linear regression was used to test the effects of polymorphisms and haplotypes on BDNF levels adjusted for potential confounders. Moreover, regulatory putative functional roles were assessed using in silico approach. BDNF levels were not associated with CACNA1C polymorphisms/haplotype in the total sample. When the sample was stratified by sex, checking the effect of polymorphisms on men and women separately, the A-allele of rs4765913 was associated with lower BDNF levels in women compared with the TT genotype (p = 0.010). The AA (rs1006737–rs4765913) haplotype was associated with BDNF levels in opposite directions regarding sex, with lower levels of BDNF in women (p = 0.040) compared to those without this haplotype, while with higher levels in men (p = 0.027). These findings were supported by the presence of regulatory marks only on the male fetal brain. Our results suggest that the BDNF levels regulation may be a potential mechanism underpinning the association between CACNA1C and psychiatric disorders, with a differential role in women and men. Schizotetranychus hindustanicus Hirst (Acari: Tetranychidae) known as the Hindustan citrus mite, is a quarantine pest present in Roraima, Brazil. In 1924 this pest was described in India. It was reported in 2002 in Venezuela and in Roraima in 2008. In 2010, the Hindustan citrus mite was reported in Colombia. It is possible that it will be introduced in other areas of Brazil, resulting in a threat to Brazilian citrus industry. Our objective was to determine the most suitable regions of Brazil for S. hindustanicus using a maximum entropy (Maxent) algorithm, based on native and invasive updated occurrence records from published research, field surveys and online databases. To avoid overfitting and improving transferability, we chose parameter settings of Maxent to construct and validate models by searching for the best combination of feature classes and regularization multipliers. The model obtained showed excellent performance according to all evaluation metrics used. A high potential for the establishment of S. hindustanicus was identified in large areas of Roraima, the extreme west of Amazonas, the entire north of the State of Pará, also in northeast, south, east, and north of the State of Amapá, and in a small portion northwest of the State of Maranhão (all states belonging to the northern region of Brazil). The impact of invasive alien pests on agriculture, food security, and biodiversity conservation has been worsened by climate change caused by the rising earth's atmospheric greenhouse gases. The African citrus triozid, Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio; Hemiptera: Triozidae), is an invasive pest of all citrus species. It vectors the phloem-limited bacterium "Candidatus Liberibacter africanus", a causal agent of citrus greening disease or African Huanglongbing (HLB). Understanding the global distribution of T. erytreae is critical for surveillance, monitoring, and eradication programs. Therefore, we combined geospatial and physiological data of T. erytreae to predict its global distribution using the CLIMEX model. The model's prediction matches T. erytreae present-day distribution and shows that parts of the Mediterranean region have moderate (0 < EI < 30) to high (EI > 30) suitability for the pest. The model predicts habitat suitability in the major citrus-producing countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, China, India, and the USA. In the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A1B and A2 scenarios, the model predicts a reduction in habitat suitability from the current time to 2070. The findings show that global citrus production will continue to be threatened by T. erytreae. However, our study provides relevant information for biosecurity and risk assessment. Eutrombicula Ewing is currently represented with more than 80 species worldwide parasitizing amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. In the present study, we examined the type series and additional material of two Neotropical chigger's species: Eutrombicula butantanensis (Fonseca) and E. ophidica (Fonseca). Eutrombicula butantanensis (Fonseca) was previously synonymized with E. alfreddugesi (Oudemans). However, we are proposing the reinstatement of E. butantanensis as a valid species. Besides that, we are proposing that E. ophidica is a junior synonym of E. butantanensis. Beyond the morphological similarities, E. butantanensis and E. ophidica were initially described to the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and were accidentally collected parasitizing the skin of a human. Ornithonyssus bursa, known as the "tropical fowl mite," is a hematophagous mite of domestic and wild birds, which occasionally bites humans. Accidental bites on humans occur mainly when abandoned bird nests are close to homes or when people are handling parasitized birds. In the present study, we describe five case reports of bites on humans and new records of localities for this species. Copper ions were detected in sugarcane spirit using an aminothiazole-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane conductive polymeric network, as a modifier for a carbon paste electrode. This polymeric network of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) containing graphite functionalized with 2-aminothiazole (AMTZ) was prepared through a two-stage synthesis. In the first stage was prepared a conductive matrix consisting in a PDMS network with the carbon dispersed, using as crosslinker the silane 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTMS). In the second stage, the chlorine attached to the PDMS network was exchanged for the 2-aminothiazole, generating a functional PDMS conductive network able to interact with metals in solution. The PDMS-conductive network was prepared with different amounts of AMTZ, according to PDMS-to-3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane ratios (1.00:0.25, 1.00:0.50, and 1.00:0.90 m/m) obtained in the first stage, generating the electrodes A25, A50 and A90. The PDMS-conductive networks were characterized via thermogravimetric analysis and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The conductive properties of the prepared electrodes were studied via cyclic voltammetry using [Fe(CN)6]3−/4−. The electrode A25 presented a peak separation of 0.113 V, anodic/cathodic current ratio of 0.69, and the highest current density (400 µA cm−2). The total impedance values calculated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for A90, A50, and A25 were 478.63, 354.80, and 35.48 kΩ, respectively. The electrode A25 showed a high capacitive character and a low total impedance. The simulated equivalent circuit shows that the electrode A25 presented the lower resistance. The electrochemical behavior of the electrodes described above with the Cu ion in an aqueous medium was studied using square-wave voltammetry. The electrode A25 showed high current densities (200.00 μA cm−2), probably because of its high amount of AMTZ. Using anodic stripping voltammetry with working dynamic range of 2.00–19.60 µmol L−1 was performed the determination of Cu ion in an aqueous medium and sugarcane spirit with a detection and quantification limits of 0.12 and 0.40 µmol L−1, respectively. The values obtained for detection of Cu ion were compared with the standard method for Cu determination, atomic absorption spectroscopy, with a relative error of 0.15 for sugarcane spirit sample. Background: Although there is a rationale supporting that preoperative showering with 2% or 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) would decrease skin bacterial colonization, there is no consensus that this practice reduces the risk of surgical site infection (SSI). Objectives: Analyze the skin concentration of CHG after preoperative showering associated with the traditional skin preparation with CHG 4% for breast surgery. Methods: Randomized controlled trial that included 45 patients, all candidates for augmentation mammaplasty, allocated into three groups (A: no preoperative showering; B: one preoperative showering; C: two preoperative showering with CHG 4%) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Skin swabs collection was performed right before the surgical incision. The samples were, then, sent to spectrophotometry in order to determine the skin concentration of CHG at the beginning of surgery. Results: The age ranged from 18 to 61 years, with a mean of 37 years old. Group C had the lowest median concentration (0.057) followed by group B (0.060) and group A (0.072), however, with no statistical significance. The areola was the place with the lowest median concentration level (0.045), followed by the axilla (0.061) and the inframammary fold (IMF) (0.069). Still, when comparing the distribution of the sites, a statistically significant difference was found only between the axilla and the areola (p = 0.022). Conclusion: Preoperative showering with CHG 4% did not increase the concentration of this agent on the skin surface right before the surgical incision. This study aimed to identify the global risk of invasion and establishment of Bedellia somnulentella, a pest of the sweet potato crop, for the present and future time, to develop policies and prevent future outbreaks. Current climate projections and future (2030, 2050, 2070, and 2100) of the insect B. somnulentella were carried out using CLIMEX. The projections showed that climate change could reduce areas of high aptitude for B. somnulentella in the parallel range of latitude 0°, the equator. On the other hand, temperate regions in the parallels with latitudes above 30°S and 30°N can increase hot and humid stress and become more suitable for the pest. This survey is based on weather data only. Data on land use and types, biotic interactions, diseases, natural enemies, alternative hosts, and competition were not considered for this model. Another uncertainty is associated with future levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The data presented here are helpful for the development of policies, studies, and strategies for the management of the B. somnulentella pest in the field. We investigated whether women diagnosed with comorbid bipolar disorder (BD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) experience higher disruptions in biological rhythms in two independent study samples. The first study has a population-based sample of 727 women, including 104 women with PMDD only, 43 women with BD only, 24 women with comorbid PMDD and BD, and 556 women without BD or PMDD (controls). Biological rhythm disruptions were cross-sectionally evaluated using the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN). The second study enrolled 77 outpatient women who completed prospective assessments at two timepoints: during the mid-follicular and the late-luteal phases of their menstrual cycles, using the BRIAN, and included 19 women with PMDD, 16 with BD, 17 with comorbid PMDD and BD, and 25 controls. In the population-based sample, all the diagnostic groups (BD, PMDD, BDPMDD) presented greater biological rhythm disruption than controls. In addition, women with BD presented greater overall biological rhythms disruption, and greater disruption in sleep, activity, and eating patterns, than women with PMDD. In the outpatient sample study, women with BDPMDD showed greater disruption in the social domain than women with PMDD. In the outpatient sample, women with BDPMDD reported significantly higher disruptions in biological rhythms across both the follicular and the luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. The comorbidity between BD and PMDD may affect biological rhythms beyond the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Background: The Mandibular Canine Index (MCI) comprises a method of sex estimation by teeth that presents controversial results in the literature. Main body: This systematic review aims to expose whether MCI can be used as a method of reliable sex estimation. A literature search was performed using the keywords "canine," "sex," "gender," "determination," "estimation," "dimorphism," "assessment," "forensic" in the databases Pubmed, Scopus, Lilacs, Scielo, and Web of Science. In addition, manual searches were carried out on the reference lists of the selected articles to cover the largest number of articles of interest as possible. Studies that performed the measurements only on maxillary canines, scientific conferences abstract books, case reports and literature reviews were excluded. The assessment of methodological quality and risk of bias was carried out based on a checklist for cross-sectional studies and another for accuracy studies. Thus, 53 articles were selected, 13 of which were accurate and 40 were cross-sectional. All accuracy articles were assessed as low risk. Among cross-sectional articles, seven were considered to be of low risk, 31 of moderate risk, and two of high risk. The accuracy of the sex estimate by MCI was verified and, despite varying among studies, the minimum and maximum values found were, respectively, 20% and 87.5% for women and 40.6% and 94% for men. The tarsonemid Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), an obligatorily phytophage, is a leading pest of the oilseed crop Jatropha curcas L. (physic nut), potentially reducing its yield. We explored interaction between P. latus and winged insects associated with J. curcas, particularly the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci [Gennadius, 1889]), considering the site of P. latus adherence, the sex of adhered individuals, and the P. latus:B. tabaci ratio in relation to the annual rainy and dry seasons. No B. tabaci individuals or evidence of P. latus phoresy was observed in sticky traps sampled on a weekly basis, nor was there evidence of P. latus dispersal by wind. However, weekly mouth aspiration samples of B. tabaci from pinion plants verified the phoretic association of P. latus and B. tabaci. Both the mite and whitefly populations showed seasonal fluctuations and decreased significantly with the fall of J. curcas leaves at the beginning of the annual drought. All phoretic P. latus individuals were adult females found adhered to the legs of B. tabaci. We concluded that P. latus is affected by the population dynamics of B. tabaci and that the phoretic association of this mite with whitefly is significant for its dispersion in commercial J. curcas plantations and should be taken into consideration when developing mite management strategies. Digital technology always accelerates change, altering organisations culturally, socially and technically. These modifications are known as "digital transformation" (DT). On a much greater scale than DT, the world was changed in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic, which re-organised society in the way of thinking, acting, producing, consuming and creating new business. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) were no different, since these institutions had to make changes to the student–lecturer interaction; teaching–learning, where DT had a relevant role, above all in academic entrepreneurship. Therefore, this study aims to propose a framework showing the structural pillars of the link between digital transformation (DT) and academic entrepreneurship (AC) (DT-AC Framework). This framework identifies the new patterns, methods, skills and other discoveries in aspects such as management, information systems and culture sciences. The intention is not to analyse how the COVID-19 pandemic imposed global structural changes, but because of it, lecturers and students found their DT accelerated and intensified, and so it is necessary to investigate the pillars supporting academic entrepreneurship. The results show that DT was already emerging as a basic element of academic entrepreneurship before the pandemic, but the process has speeded up. This bibliometric study indicates the structural pillars that support entrepreneurship following the Covid19 pandemic, as created from DT in universities, providing an extensive systematic review that indicates the cause and effect of the academic entrepreneurship process. Purpose: Euschoengastia Ewing is a chigger genus in need of revision as it historically has combined species solely on the presence of expanded prodorsal trichobothria. The objective of the present study is to describe a new genus to reallocate two North American Euschoengastia species, to start an organization into this genus. Methods : In this study, we provide drawings, measurements and microscopy images on a Microscope Zeiss for the two redescribed species. Results: After examining the types of the species Euschoengastia latchmani Brennan and Yunker and Euschoengastia obscura Wrenn and Loomis, we realized that it was necessary to create the new genus to relocate these two species, mainly based on the following characters: (1) the number of prongs on the odontus; and (2) ornamentation of the prodorsal sclerite. Conclusion: Goffacarus latchmanin. comb. and Goffacarus obscuran. comb. are redescribed here and to reallocate these two species the genus, Goffacarusn. gen. is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soybean is one of the most cultivated and important legumes in the world. Given its importance, understanding the shifts of climate suitability for this crop under climate change is essential. One way to map these potential changes in soybean distribution is through species distribution models (SDMs). In this study, we conducted a SDM for soybeans, using data from non-irrigated soybean fields. We used CLIMEX and CliMond climatic data in 10' resolution data to model the current and future climatic potential distribution of soybeans, applying the general circulation model CSIRO-Mk3.0 and assuming an A2 emissions scenario for 2030, 2050, and 2070. We analyzed changes in the climatic suitability areas under these different climatic projections and highlighted the major soybean-growing countries (USA, Brazil, Argentina, China, and India). In the future, the consequences of climate change on soybean will probably depend on its locality on the globe. Climate suitability for soybean cultivation is likely to increase in countries and regions located at northern latitudes, such as Canada and Western Europe. On the other hand, countries located in tropical areas, for example Brazil and India, may suffer significant losses in suitable areas by 2070. Our model provides a more in-depth view of areas that can be incorporated into soybean cultivation and which stressors decrease the climatic suitability of soybean in current and future scenarios. Macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) is a palm tree with a high potential for plant-based raw material production, particularly bioenergy production; it is one of the most promising species for cultivation on marginal lands. This study aimed to determine the distribution of A. aculeata species worldwide and verify the Köppen–Geiger climatic classifications of its locations. Research on the global occurrence of A. aculeata was conducted to characterize the geographic dispersal of macaúba. Based on the distribution points of the species, the Köppen–Geiger classification was determined for each occurrence point. Subsequently, a map was created that showed the regions with potential for the introduction of macaúba based on the climatic data compiled. Macaúba is distributed throughout the American continents, with the highest occurrence rates in Latin America (followed by those in North America and finally Central America). Particularly, Brazil and Mexico exhibit the highest occurrence rates. According to the distribution, the Köppen–Geiger climatic classification determined the predominance of macaúba in the savanna climate. Some countries located in Central Africa, Southern Asia, and Northern Australia showed the potential to introduce macaúba as a bioenergetic source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
