An accurate discrimination on moisture status of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) bushings is crucial for the maintenance and replacement schedule of bushings. Based on frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) measurement and Dissado–Hill (DH) relaxation model, this article proposes a hybrid approach of hidden Markov model and gray wolf optimization (GWO-HMM) for MS estimation of bushings subjected to the ununiform moisture distribution and dynamic time-series modeling. First, simulation models of moisture diffusion and FDS of the OIP bushing were constructed using finite element modeling approach. Then, the GWO algorithm was employed to explore dielectric parameters influenced by moisture in the DH model. Then, the GWO-HMMs was adopted as a classification tool to discriminate the MS of the simulation and experimental data of the bushings. Classification results confirm that the average identification accuracies of the proposed method are 97.17% and 96.81% over these two datasets, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed moisture estimate method for OIP bushings. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as a promising candidate for energy-efficient solutions in future wireless networks. Their dynamic and low-power configuration enables coverage extension, massive connectivity, and low-latency communications. Due to a large number of unknown variables referring to the RIS unit elements and the transmitted signals, channel estimation and signal recovery in RIS-based systems are the ones of the most critical technical challenges. To address this problem, we focus on the RIS-assisted wireless communication system and present two joint channel estimation and signal recovery schemes based on message passing algorithms in this paper. Specifically, the proposed bidirectional scheme applies the Taylor series expansion and Gaussian approximation to simplify the sum-product procedure in the formulated problem. In addition, the inner iteration that adopts two variants of approximate message passing algorithms is incorporated to ensure robustness and convergence. Two ambiguities removal methods are also discussed in this paper. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes show the superiority over the state-of-art benchmark method. In this paper, two different timing-mismatch compensation strategies for two-channel time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters are comprehensively analyzed and compared. In the first strategy (SA), one channel serves as a reference channel, and the other channel is compensated to match the reference channel using the timing mismatch between the channels. In the second strategy (SB), both channels are compensated to match each other, using half the value of the channel mismatch with different signs. For SB, the paper introduces a novel compensation structure that utilizes parallel differentiator-multiplier (PDM) branches. Expressions for the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) after compensation are derived for both strategies. These expressions reveal that the novel PDM structure achieves a remarkably greater SFDR than the existing cascaded differentiator-multiplier (CDM) compensation structure which can be used for both SA and SB. This is because, after compensation, the remaining aliasing distortion in the proposed PDM structure is shown to be of higher approximation order (in terms of the mismatch value) and thus substantially smaller than in the CDM structure. Millimeter-wave rotary-wing (RW) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) links face unpredictable Doppler effect arising from the inevitable wobbling of RW UAV. Moreover, the time-varying channel characteristics during transmission lead to inaccurate channel estimation, which in turn results in the deteriorated bit error probability performance of the UAV A2G link. This paper studies the impact of mechanical wobbling on the Doppler effect of the millimeter-wave wireless channel between a hovering RW UAV and a ground node. Our contributions of this paper lie in: i) modeling the wobbling process of a hovering RW UAV; ii) developing an analytical model to derive the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) for the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link in a closed-form expression; and iii) investigating how RW UAV wobbling impacts the Doppler effect on the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. Numerical results show that different RW UAV wobbling patterns impact the amplitude and the frequency of ACF oscillation in the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. The use of antenna arrays is indispensable in radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications areas, as it permits the treatment of wavefronts in the spatial domain, enabling important applications such as beamforming and target detection. Spatial information is commonly given in terms of spatial correlation functions (SCFs), but its representation in terms of angular domain, such as the power azimuth spectrums (PASs), is sometimes more convenient. Therefore, transforming from SCF to PAS, and vice versa, is often required. This is commonly done by employing so-called beamformers, where the Bartlett beamformer (BB) is the most commonly utilized. However, the use of beamformers alone is not enough for retrieving PAS information from a given SCF. Particularly, this paper shows that a non-linear operation is missing in relating SCFs to PASs as provided by current beamformers. The paper also shows the mathematical expressions that correctly relate SCFs to PASs and wavenumber spectrums (WNSs) for the general case of systems with antenna arrays. This paper considers the uplink performance of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system with mobile users. Mobility brings two major problems to a MIMO-OFDM system: inter carrier interference (ICI) and channel aging. In practice, it is common to allot multiple contiguous subcarriers to a user as well as schedule multiple users on each subcarrier. Motivated by this, we consider a general subcarrier allocation scheme and derive expressions for the ICI power, uplink signal to interference plus noise ratio and the achievable uplink sum-rate, taking into account the ICI and the multi-user interference due to channel aging. We show that the system incurs a near-constant ICI power that depends linearly on the ratio of the number of users per subcarrier to the number of subcarriers per user, nearly independently of how the UEs distribute their power across the subcarriers. Further, we exploit the coherence bandwidth of the channel to reduce the length of the pilot sequences required for uplink channel estimation. We consider both zero-forcing and maximal-ratio combining at the receiver and compare the respective sum-rate performances. In either case, the subcarrier allocation scheme considered in this paper leads to significantly higher sum-rates compared to previous work, owing to the near-constant ICI property as well as the reduced pilot overhead. Spatial modulation (SM) is one special type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique whose advantage is that only one radio-frequency (RF) chain is needed. Recently, the so-called cross Z-complementary pair (CZCP) was proposed as the SM training sequence. Optimal channel estimation performance over frequency-selective channels can be achieved since the CZCPs have the specific zero correlation zone (ZCZ) for auto-correlation and cross-correlation sums. However, the ZCZ width of the CZCP is theoretically upper bounded by half sequence length. In this paper, the CZCP is extended to the cross Z-complementary set (CZCS) to have larger ZCZ width which can be used in SM to combat larger delay spread. Several generic constructions of CZCSs with large ZCZ widths and flexible lengths are proposed in this paper. Even the perfect CZCS, whose ZCZ width has the maximum value, can be obtained. This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently received extensive research interest due to its capability to intelligently change the wireless propagation environment. For RIS-aided wireless communications in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode, channel feedback at the user equipment (UE) is essential for the base station (BS) to acquire the downlink channel state information (CSI). In this paper, a dimension reduced channel feedback scheme is proposed to reduce the channel feedback overhead by exploiting the single-structured sparsity of BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel. Since different UEs share the same sparse BS-RIS channel but have their respective RIS-UE channels, there are only limited non-zero column vectors in the BS-RIS-UE cascaded channel matrix, and different UEs share the same indexes of the non-zero columns. Thus, the downlink CSI can be decomposed into user-independent channel information (i.e., the indexes of non-zero columns) and user-specific channel information (i.e., the non-zero column vectors), where the former for all UEs can be fed back by only one UE, while the latter can be fed back with a fairly low overhead by different UEs, respectively. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional method, the proposed scheme can reduce channel feedback overhead by more than 80% for RIS-aided wireless communications. In underwater acoustic (UWA) adaptive communication system, due to time-varying channel, the transmitter often has outdated channel state information (CSI), which results in low efficiency. UWA channels are much more difficult to estimate and predict than terrestrial wireless channels, given the more severe multipath environments with varying propagation speeds in different locations, non-linear propagation paths, several-order higher propagation latency, mobile transceiver and obstacles in the sea, etc. To handle the complexity, this paper proposes an efficient online CSI prediction model for UWA CSI prediction considering the complicated correlationship of UWA channels in both the time and frequency domains. This paper designs a learning model called CsiPreNet, which is an integration of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short term memory (LSTM) network. The performance is compared with the widely used recursive least squares (RLS) predictor, the approximate linear dependency recursive kernel least-squares (ALD-KRLS), and two common conventional deep neural networks (DNN) predictors, i.e., back propagation neural network (BPNN) and LSTM network using the measured data recorded in the South China Sea. To validate the efficacy of prediction, we investigate the prediction of CSI in simulated downlink UWA orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Specifically, the measured UWA channel is used in the OFDMA system. A joint subcarrier-bit-power adaptive allocation scheme is used for resource allocation. To further improve the performance, we develop an offline-online prediction scheme, enabling the prediction results to be more stable. Simulation and experimental results show that the CsiPreNet has superior performance than the existing solutions, thanks to its capability in capturing both the temporal and frequency correlation of the UWA CSIs. Cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) enable a network platform for beyond the fifth generation of communication networks (B5G), which incorporates the advances in cloud computing technologies to modern radio access networks. Recently, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna rate splitting (RS) at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, has been shown to manage the interference in multi-antenna communication networks efficiently. This paper considers applying RSMA in C-RAN. We address the practical challenge of a transmitter that only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) of the users. To this end, the paper investigates the problem of stochastic coordinated beamforming (SCB) optimization to maximize the ergodic sum-rate (ESR) in the network. Furthermore, we propose a scalable and robust RS scheme where the number of the common streams to be decoded at each user scales linearly with the number of users, and the common stream selection only depends on the statistical CSI. The setup leads to a challenging stochastic and non-convex optimization problem. A sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) based algorithm is adopted to tackle the intractable stochastic non-convex optimization and guarantee convergence to a stationary point asymptotically. The numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RS strategy and show a gain up to 27% in the achievable ESR compared with state-of-the-art schemes, namely treating interference as noise (TIN) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency spectrum offers orders of magnitude greater spectrum to mitigate the severe spectrum shortage in conventional cellular bands. To overcome the high propagation loss in the mmWave band, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) can be adopted at both transmitter and receiver to provide large beamforming gains. At the same time, hybrid architecture is applied to reduce the huge power consumption caused by devices operating at radio frequency (RF). However, because of the hybrid architecture and large number of antennas, it is hard to obtain the channel state information (CSI) which is crucial for obtaining desirable beamforming gains. Off-grid error and sparsity pattern (SP) estimation error are two main limiting factors of the performance of most existing compressive sensing (CS) based channel estimation (CE) algorithms. Off-grid error presents when the true angle does not lie on the discretized angle grid of mmWave channel in the spatial domain. In this paper, we first propose a fast Bayesian matching pursuit method with ‘virtual sparsity’ to improve the accuracy of SP estimation and name it as the improved Bayesian matching pursuit (IBMP). Then an enhanced algorithm, named off-grid IBMP (OG-IBMP), is developed to mitigate the off-grid problem, followed by a theoretical analysis of OG-IBMP. This method iteratively updates the selected grid points and updates the corresponding parameters based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. Numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis and evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Compared to other existing methods, the results show that our proposed OG-IBMP algorithm greatly reduces the off-grid error and significantly enhances the accuracy of the SP estimation with low computational complexity. In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. Recently, research on the design of relay structure and optimal precoding matrix in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems has been proposed in many works assuming that partial or all of the channel state information (CSI) is known. However, in the practical communication systems, the CSI is unknown and needs to be estimated. In particular, channel estimation is more difficult when the relay adopts a hybrid precoding structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel estimation scheme based on Tucker-2 tensor model for a multi-way massive MIMO hybrid relay system. The proposed algorithm provides all the CSI involved in the communication links at each user end. Compared with traditional channel estimation algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better estimation performance and requires few iterations to achieve convergence. In addition, we derive the analytical expression of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRB) for reference. In this paper, we propose a reference-free artificial noise (AN) waveform design and cancellation scheme for single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless secure transmission. First, a system structure with the aid of AN is presented, where we provide a specific method extracting the sign information of each symbol from the desired signal (DS) to form AN at the transmitter. Then, we notice that the legitimate receiver enable to reconstruct the AN from the received signal by almost the same method as the transmitter without AN reference, which reduces the system complexity in practice. Subsequently, the AN cancellation performance and the secrecy capacity at the receiver are analyzed, and their upper bounds are also derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that the proposed reference-free AN design and cancellation scheme can effectively suppress the AN at legitimate receiver, while degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at eavesdropper seriously, which provides impressive secure performance in terms of secrecy capacity. It is well known that for Gaussian channels, a nearest neighbor decoding rule, which seeks the minimum Euclidean distance between a codeword and the received channel output vector, is the maximum likelihood solution and hence capacity-achieving. Nearest neighbor decoding remains a convenient and yet mismatched solution for general channels, and the key message of this paper is that the performance of nearest neighbor decoding can be improved by generalizing its decoding metric to incorporate channel state dependent output processing and codeword scaling. Using generalized mutual information, which is a lower bound to the mismatched capacity under independent and identically distributed codebook ensemble, as the performance measure, this paper establishes the optimal generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule, under Gaussian channel input. Several restricted forms of the generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule are also derived and compared with existing solutions. To further mitigate the BER error floor of $M$ -ary differential chaos shift keying (MDCSK) modulation for impulsive noise, a low-cost high-reliability coded modulation scheme without equalizations is desirable for impulsive noise. In this paper, a protograph-based low-density parity-check coded MDCSK-based bit-interleaved coded modulation (MDCSK-BICM) scheme is proposed for the scenario with impulsive noise obeying Bernoulli-Laplace distribution. Considering the Gaussian distribution of protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) and the benchmark of coding design, the U-shaped non-coherent capacity is derived with optimal code rate for square MDCSK, showing that the code rates are stable with $E_b/N_0$ increasing but still much lower than that of DS-16DQAM at code rate $>\!0.145$. The derived joint probability density function can be considered as approximately a Gaussian distribution, which is used to improve the impulsive noise fitted PEXIT. Finally, a new code under a novel principle is designed for better bit error rate performance based on the improved PEXIT analysis. Both PEXIT analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a better BER than that with a traditional scheme, and suggesting a research approach based on simple methods. In this paper, we investigate a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication system with an energy-limited relay node. The relay node harvests energy based on the radio-frequency (RF) signal transmitted from the source node through the time-switching (TS) protocol and fully uses the harvested energy to precode and forward the information to the destination node. The non-linear energy harvesting models are considered at the relay node. With the consideration of the channel estimation error, the joint optimization of the TS factor, source and relay precoding matrices is proposed with robustness against the channel state information (CSI) mismatch to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the source and destination nodes. The optimal structure for the source and relay precoding matrices is derived to simplify the transceiver optimization problem. Channel predictions are important to achieve high spectral efficiency for high-mobility vehicles. Channel extrapolation, used by many prediction methods, suffers from a limited prediction horizon in difficult radio environments. The predictor antenna (PA) concept provides the prediction horizons required for efficient transmission to fast-moving vehicles by measuring the channel ahead of time with an extra antenna placed on the vehicle. This paper presents a general framework that addresses the practical signal processing challenges of the PA concept. It is adaptable to a vast variety of vehicular deployment, mobility, and communication scenarios. A new theoretical prediction normalized mean-squared error (NMSE) expression is derived based on the presented framework. The framework is demonstrated by applying it to extensive channel measurements and comparing the PA predictions to Kalman-based channel predictions and outdated channel estimates. By studying the impact of vehicular velocity and radio environment on the prediction performance, it is shown that PA prediction is weaker at low velocities, where Kalman prediction methods are sufficient, but is uncontested at high velocities in environments without a dominating path. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost-effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs’ signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS-associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two-stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user-IRS association problem based on long-term/statistical channel knowledge and the selected user-IRS-BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs’ passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS’s multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. In this paper, a new pilot protection scheme for AC line connected to LCC-HVDC inverter based on composite-mode model is proposed. First, taking commutation failure into consideration, 1-mode and 2-mode equivalent instantaneous models of inverter in different operating conditions are built. Second, according to the equivalent instantaneous inductances of inverter in different combinations of operating conditions, the equivalent models of inverter are summarized into 4 operation states. Then, the 1-mode and 2-mode equivalent models are combined to establish the composite-mode model of AC/DC hybrid system. And then, using multi-time section information, the instantaneous inductances of backside composite-mode model are calculated. Thus, protection criterion is constructed on the difference between composite-mode models of in-zone faults and that of out-of-zone faults for fault locating. At millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, narrow beamwidth and inaccurate channel estimation result in beam alignment errors, which degrade the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and rate. The extent of beam misalignment depends on the various link parameters, however, prior works ignored such a dependence and considered oversimplified array patterns. This paper formulates beam alignment errors for the uniform linear array at the base station as a function of the link parameters by using the Cramér Rao lower bound of angle-of-arrival estimates and proposes a tractable array pattern approximation to better reflect the effects of such alignment errors. Utilizing stochastic geometry and the statistics of the Student’s t-distribution, a novel and robust analytical technique is developed to obtain the downlink SNR and rate coverage probabilities due to beam misalignment, assuming a single antenna at the user. We show that beam alignment errors significantly affect the achievable SNR and rate for non line-of-sight (NLOS)/distant users whereas the effect is negligible for LOS/nearby users. It is also illustrated that the effects of alignment errors cannot be mitigated only by increasing the number of antennas. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) control information delivery is a critical communication with stringent requirements in terms of reliability and latency. In this context, link adaptation plays an essential role in the fulfillment of the required performance in terms of decode error probability and delay. Link adaptation is usually based on channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback information from the user equipment that should represent the current state of the channel. However, measurement, scheduling and processing delays introduce a CQI aging effect, that is a mismatch between the current channel state and its CQI representation. Using outdated CQI values may lead to the selection of a wrong modulation and coding scheme, with a detrimental effect on performance. This is particularly relevant in ultra reliable and low latency communications (URLLC), where the control of the reliability can be negatively impacted, and it is more evident when the channel is fast varying as the case of UAVs. This paper analyzes the effects of CQI aging on URLLCs, considering transmissions under the finite blocklength regime, that characterizes such communications type. A deep learning approach is investigated to predict the next CQI from the knowledge of past reports, and performance in terms of decode error probability and throughput is given. Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is promising to meet the high rate requirements for future 6G. To realize efficient precoding, accurate channel state information is essential. Existing channel estimation algorithms with low pilot overhead heavily rely on the channel sparsity in the angular domain, which is achieved by the classical far-field planar-wavefront assumption. However, due to the non-negligible near-field spherical-wavefront property in XL-MIMO, this channel sparsity in the angular domain is not achievable. Therefore, existing far-field channel estimation schemes will suffer from severe performance loss. To address this problem, in this paper, we study the near-field channel estimation by exploiting the polar-domain sparsity. Specifically, unlike the classical angular-domain representation that only considers the angular information, we propose a polar-domain representation, which simultaneously accounts for both the angular and distance information. In this way, the near-field channel also exhibits sparsity in the polar domain, based on which, we propose on-grid and off-grid near-field XL-MIMO channel estimation schemes. Firstly, an on-grid polar-domain simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (P-SOMP) algorithm is proposed to efficiently estimate the near-field channel. Furthermore, an off-grid polar-domain simultaneous iterative gridless weighted (P-SIGW) algorithm is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy. Anti-eavesdropping channel estimation (ANECE) is useful for a network of cooperative full-duplex radio devices/users. Using ANECE, a secret key can be generated by each pair of users, and additional secret information can be transmitted between a pair of users. This paper analyzes the capacity of the secret key based on ANECE, and compares it with the conventional method for channel training. The paper also analyzes the secrecy capacity of information transmission using an one-way scheme, and compares it with a two-way scheme. It is shown that the total amount of secrecy generated from ANECE can be substantially larger than that based on the conventional method especially when an eavesdropper may have an unlimited number of antennas. The paper also formulates a total secure degree of freedom (TSDoF) of the ANECE based scheme, and compares it with a prior scheme of secret information transmission from a multi-antenna node to another against a multi-antenna eavesdropper where channel state information is unknown everywhere initially. The comparison shows that there is a substantial gain of TSDoF by exploiting full-duplex radios and reciprocal channels via ANECE. Range-based positioning using wireless signal has gained remarkable attention in past decades. Accurately extracting the distance information, i.e., estimating parameters of individual multipath, is of interest. It has been shown that diffuse multipath component (DMC) in wireless propagation channel has significant influence on channel estimation and, thus, the ranging performance. In addition to specular component (SC), DMC should be considered in order to improve the estimated accuracy of channel paths’ parameters and, thus, the ranging performance. In this paper, we extend the quasi-maximum likelihood space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm by incorporating an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) filter to estimate the channel parameters under the presence of DMC. The parameters of both DMC and SC are estimated in an iterative approach, where the DMC is assumed as colored noise and the ARMA-filter is used to estimate the contributions from DMC. The validation of the algorithm based on measured data shows that both SC and DMC can be accurately estimated by the proposed approach. In this paper, we design receivers for filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive MIMO considering practical aspects such as channel estimation and equalization. In particular, we propose a spectrally efficient pilot structure and a channel estimation technique in the uplink to jointly estimate all the users’ channel impulse responses. We mathematically analyze our proposed channel estimator and find the statistics of the channel estimation errors. These statistics are incorporated into our proposed equalizers to deal with the imperfect channel state information (CSI) effect. We revisit the channel equalization problem for FBMC-based massive MIMO, address the shortcomings of the existing equalizers in the literature, and make them more applicable to practical scenarios. The proposed receiver in this paper consists of two stages. In the first stage, a linear combining of the received signals at the base station (BS) antennas provides a coarse channel equalization and removes any multiuser interference. In the second stage, a per subcarrier fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) takes care of any residual distortion of the channel for the user of interest. We propose an FSE design based on the equivalent channel at the linear combiner output. This enables the applicability of our proposed technique to small and/or distributed antenna setups such as cell-free massive MIMO. Applying non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks has the potential to significantly enhance the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic beam-splitting NOMA scheme to fully exploit the antenna array gain in downlink mmWave networks, where single- and double-beam NOMA transmissions are dynamically enabled according to the spatial angle difference between the paired NOMA users, thereby enhancing the flexibility of applying NOMA in mmWave networks. The base station with a single radio frequency chain implements the double-beam NOMA transmission by adopting the beam-splitting technique. We develop a unified theoretical performance analysis framework for the proposed scheme, while taking into account the spatially random users, link blockage model, and general distance-based user pairing strategy. By using tools from stochastic geometry, we derive the exact expressions of the coverage probability and the sum rate of the proposed scheme under both the LoS exponential and ball models. We further derive the corresponding upper bound to simplify the analytical expressions. Simulations validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed scheme in terms of the coverage probability and sum rate over the conventional single-beam NOMA and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes. This paper derives the optimal test channel distribution and the complete characterization of the classical Gorbunov and Pinsker (1973), Gorbunov and Pinsker (1974) nonanticipatory epsilon entropy of multivariate Gaussian Markov sources with square-error fidelity, which remained an open problem since 1974. The paper also formulates a state dependent nonanticipatory epsilon entropy, in which past reproductions are available to the decoder and not to the encoder, the test channel is specified with respect to an auxiliary (state) random process, and the reproduction process is a causal function of past reproduction and the auxiliary random process. This variation is analogous to the Wyner and Ziv (1976) and Wyner (1978) rate distortion function (RDF), of memoryless sources. It is shown that the operational rate of zero-delay codes, with past reproductions available to the decoder but not to the encoder is bounded below by the state dependent nonanticipatory epsilon entropy rate. For the case of multivariate Gaussian Markov sources with square-error fidelity, the optimal test channel distribution and the complete characterization of the state dependent of nonanticipatory epsilon entropy are derived, and also shown that that the two nonanticipatory epsilon entropies coincide. The derivations are new; they are based on structural properties of the stochastic realizations of the reproduction process that induce the optimal test channel distributions. They are derived using, achievable lower bounds on information theoretic measures, properties of mean-square estimation theory, Hadamard’s inequality, and canonical correlation coefficients of a tuple of multivariate jointly Gaussian random processes. In practical propagation environments, different massive MIMO users can have correlated angles in spatial paths. In this paper, we study the effect of angle correlation on inter-user channel correlation via a combination of measurement and analysis. We show three key results. First, we collect a massive MIMO channel dataset for examining the inter-user channel correlation in a real-world propagation environment; the dataset is now open-access. We observed channel correlation higher than 0.48 for all close-by users. Additionally, over 30% of far-away users, even when they are tens of wavelengths apart, have inter-user channel correlation that is at least twice higher than the correlation in the i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel. Second, we compute the inter-user channel correlation in closed-form as a function of inter-user angle correlation, the number of base-station antennas, and base-station inter-antenna spacing. Our analysis shows that inter-user angle correlation increases the inter-user channel correlation. Inter-user channel correlation reduces with a larger base-station array aperture, i.e., more antennas and larger inter-antenna spacing. Third, we explain the measurements with numerical experiments to show that inter-user angle correlation can result in significant inter-user channel correlation in practical massive MIMO channels. In this paper, we consider the orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) based integrated radar-communication (Rad-Com) for automobile systems operating in millimeter wave band with imperfect time-frequency synchronization for communications. Since different pilot power allocation and placement strategies can result in different performance, we investigate the power allocation and placement design for the Rad-Com system. We analyze the effect of power allocation and pilot placement on the system performance. Based on the analysis, we provide, along with a channel estimation scheme, the pilot power allocation and placement designs that can optimize the radar and communication performance, respectively. Moreover, the tradeoff between radar and communication performance is discussed and a tradeoff design is presented. We conduct simulations to validate our analysis and evaluate the proposed designs. The conventional direction of arrival (DOA) estimation methods are performed with multiple receiving channels. In this paper, a changeling DOA estimation problem is addressed in a different scenario with only one full-functional receiving channel. A new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm system using multiple lifted reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is proposed for the DOA estimation. The UAV movement degrades the DOA estimation performance significantly, and the existing atomic norm minimization (ANM) methods cannot be used in the scenario with array perturbation. Specifically, considering the position perturbation of UAVs, a new atomic norm-based DOA estimation method is proposed, where an atomic norm is defined with the parameter of the position perturbation. Then, a customized semi-definite programming (SDP) method is derived to solve the atomic norm-based method, where different from the traditional SDP method, an additional transforming matrix is formulated. Moreover, a gradient descent method is applied to refine the estimated DOA and the position perturbation further. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves much better DOA estimation performance in the RIS-aided UAV swarm system with only one receiving channel than various benchmark schemes. In the existing millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless positioning systems, the method based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) uses the channel sparsity to estimate the parameters required for positioning, such as angle of arrival (AOA) and time delay, but most existing SBL solutions only consider the angle sparsity. In this paper, we consider the joint sparsity of the angle domain and time delay domain to propose an improved SBL algorithm by using a new two-dimensional adaptive grid refinement method in the SBL framework. This algorithm solves the grid mismatch problem caused by the fixed grid in the traditional SBL method, and reduces the algorithm complexity of the off-grid SBL (OGSBL) algorithm. We also obtain the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of AOA, time delay and position estimation based on the mmWave multipath signals to analyze the estimation errors. This paper presents the design and bit error rate (BER) analysis of a phase-independent non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. The proposed NOMA system can utilize amplitude-coherent detection (ACD) which requires only the channel amplitude for equalization purposes. In what follows, three different designs for realizing the detection of the proposed NOMA are investigated. One is based on the maximum likelihood (ML) principle, while the other two are based on successive interference cancellation (SIC). Closed-form expressions for the BER of all detectors are derived and compared with the BER of the coherent ML detector. The obtained results, which are corroborated by simulations, demonstrate that, in most scenarios, the BER is dominated by multiuser interference rather than the absence of the channel phase information. Consequently, the BER using ML and ACD are comparable for various cases of interest. Communication over a random-parameter quantum channel when the decoder is required to reconstruct the parameter sequence is considered. We study scenarios that include either strictly-causal, causal, or non-causal channel side information (CSI) available at the encoder, and also when CSI is not available. This model can be viewed as a form of quantum metrology, and as the quantum counterpart of the classical rate-and-state channel with state estimation at the decoder. Regularized formulas for the capacity-distortion regions are derived. In the special case of measurement channels, single-letter characterizations are derived for the strictly-causal and causal settings. Furthermore, in the more general case of entanglement-breaking channels, a single-letter characterization is derived when CSI is not available. As a consequence, we obtain regularized formulas for the capacity of random-parameter quantum channels with CSI, generalizing previous results by Boche et al., 2016, on classical-quantum channels. Bosonic dirty paper coding is introduced as a consequence, where we demonstrate that the optimal coefficient is not necessarily that of minimum mean-square error estimation as in the classical setting. This paper studies the impact of additional pilot overhead for covariance matrix estimation in a time-division duplexed (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We choose average uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) spectral efficiencies (SEs) as performance metrics for the massive MIMO system, and derive closed form expressions for them in terms of the additional pilot overhead. The expressions are derived by considering linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE)-type and element-wise LMMSE-type channel estimates that represent LMMSE and element-wise LMMSE with estimated covariance matrices, respectively. In this paper, we propose an iterative generalized eigenvector (GE) precoder design for three dimensional (3D) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink with uniform planar array (UPA) and imperfect channel state information (CSI). We use a posterior beam based statistical channel model which includes the channel aging and the spatial correlation. We consider the problem of maximizing the expected sum-rate under a total power constraint. By replacing the expected sum-rate with their deterministic equivalents, we obtain the structure of the optimal linear precoders. The columns of the optimal precoding matrices are the generalized eigen-vectors of two matrices. One of the two matrices is related to the transmitted signal of the intended user, and the other is related to the power constraint and the leakage to other users. Furthermore, the two matrices are also functions of the precoders, thus iterative updates of the precoder are needed. Then, we investigate the power allocation and the computation of the Lagrangian multiplier, and propose an iterative algorithm based on the structure of the optimal precoders. Simulation results show that the proposed precoders can achieve significantly performance gain than the widely used regularized zero forcing (RZF) precoder and signal to leakage plus noise ratio (SLNR) precoder. The performance of grant-free random access (GF-RA) is limited by the number of accessible random access resources (RRs) due to the absence of collision resolution. Compressive sensing (CS)-based RA schemes scale up the RRs at the expense of increased non-orthogonality among transmitted signals. This paper presents the design of multi-sequence spreading random access (MSRA) which employs multiple spreading sequences to spread the different symbols of a user as opposed to the conventional schemes in which a user employs the same spreading sequence for each symbol. We show that MSRA provides code diversity, enabling the multi-user detection (MUD) to be modeled into a well-conditioned multiple measurement vectors (MMVs) CS problem. The code diversity is quantified by the decrease in the average Babel mutual coherence among the spreading sequences. Moreover, we present a two-stage active user detection (AUD) scheme for both wideband and narrowband implementations. Our theoretical analysis shows that with MSRA activity misdetection falls exponentially while the size of GF-RA frame is increased. Finally, the simulation results show that about 82% increase in utilization of RRs, i.e., more active users, is supported by MSRA than the conventional schemes while achieving the RA failure rate lower bound set by random access collision. Cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) is an emerging technology for beyond 5G with its promising features such as higher spectral efficiency and superior spatial diversity as compared to conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. The main working principle of cell-free mMIMO is that many distributed access points (APs) cooperate simultaneously to serve all the users within the network without creating cell boundaries. This paper considers the uplink of a cell-free mMIMO system utilizing the radio stripe network architecture with a sequential fronthaul between the APs. A novel uplink sequential processing algorithm is developed, which is proved to be optimal in both the maximum spectral efficiency (SE) and the minimum mean square error (MSE) sense. A detailed quantitative analysis of the fronthaul requirement or signaling of the proposed algorithm and its comparison with competing sub-optimal algorithms is provided. Key conclusions and implications are summarized in the form of corollaries. Based on the analytical and numerical simulation results, we conclude that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the fronthaul signaling, without compromising the communication performance. Channel estimation is challenging for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. Since the number of coefficients of the cascaded channel among the base station (BS), the RIS, and the user equipment (UE), is the product of the number of BS antennas, the number of RIS elements, and the number of UEs, the pilot overhead can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a two-timescale channel estimation framework to exploit the property that the BS-RIS channel is high-dimensional but quasi-static, while the RIS-UE channel is mobile but low-dimensional. Specifically, to estimate the quasi-static BS-RIS channel, we propose a dual-link pilot transmission scheme, where the BS transmits downlink pilots and receives uplink pilots reflected by the RIS. Then, we propose a coordinate descent-based algorithm to recover the BS-RIS channel. Since the quasi-static BS-RIS channel is estimated less frequently than the mobile channel is, the average pilot overhead can be reduced from a long-term perspective. Although the mobile RIS-UE channel has to be frequently estimated in a small timescale, the associated pilot overhead is low thanks to its low dimension. Multiple remote antenna units (RAUs) cooperate to serve a certain user in cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Due to the different distances between each RAU and the user, asynchronous reception effects will occur. This paper studies the impacts of asynchronous reception effects on cell-free distributed massive MIMO systems. We first derive the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation under the asynchronous reception effects. Given the estimated channel state information, we derive the closed-form expressions of the user achievable rates with maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoders, which are further used to analyze the impacts of asynchronous reception effects. The accuracy of the closed-form expressions are verified. Simulation results demonstrate that asynchronous reception effects cause a non-negligible drop on the system spectral efficiency. Moreover, the performance degradation is proportional to the subcarrier sequence number and even more serious with the increasing of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or the number of antennas per RAU. Nowadays, adaptive filters in complex domain have received increasing attention since they can be applied to a wider scenario than real valued cases. As two typical information theoretic criteria, the minimum complex kernel risk-sensitive loss (MCKRSL) and maximum complex correntropy criterion (MCCC) have shown robustness to non-Gaussian noises in complex domain adaptive filtering. However, since both criteria cannot consider the probability distribution of error, they are not optimal in the presence of some non-Gaussian noises. This paper firstly defines a complex Shannon entropy in terms of the probability distribution of error. Then, a novel adaptive filter is proposed using the minimum complex Shannon entropy (MCSE) criterion. More significantly, the convergence behavior of the MCSE algorithm is discussed, and thus the steady-state excess mean square error (EMSE) is calculated for theoretical analysis. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become an appealing solution for a wide range of commercial and civilian applications thanks to its high mobility and flexible deployment. Due to the continuous UAV navigation, the channels between UAV based arial base station (BS) and the ground users are subject to the Doppler effect. Meanwhile, when UAV is equipped with massive number of antennas in high frequency band such as mmWave and Tera Hertz (THz), the non-negligible propagation delay across the array aperture would cause beam squint effect. In this paper, we first investigate the channel under both Doppler effect and beam squint effect for UAV communications with large antenna array and high frequency band. Then, we design a gridless compressed sensing (GCS) based channel tracking method, where the high dimension uplink channel can be derived by estimating a few physical parameters such as the direction of arrival (DOA), Doppler shift, and the complex gain information. Besides, with the Doppler shift reciprocity and angular reciprocity, the downlink channel can be derived by only one pilot symbol, which greatly decreases the downlink channel training overhead. In this paper, a novel training beam sequence design for multiuser millimeter wave tracking systems is proposed. For each receiver, a single-path channel model is firstly investigated, where we introduce a maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion to estimate the time-varying angle of departure (AoD), followed by an extended Kalman filter to update the stale complex path gain. We then employ training beam sequence design to minimize the estimated AoD’s average mean squared error (AMSE), which however has no explicit expression. We firstly derive a closed-form upper bound for the AMSE and then simplify this upper bound into a tractable form, based on which a nonlinear optimization problem (NLP) is formulated. By solving this NLP optimally using its corresponding Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, we obtain an efficient training beam sequence. The proposed MAP criterion and its associated training beam sequence design are further extended to multi-path scenarios, where a joint estimation of the multiple paths is firstly discussed, followed by a sequential estimation as a low-complexity alternative. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation for IRS-assisted green multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. To minimize the total transmit power, both the beamforming vectors at the access point (AP) and the phase shifts at multiple IRSs are jointly optimized, while taking into account the minimum required quality-of-service (QoS) of multiple users. First, two novel algorithms, namely a penalty-based alternating minimization (AltMin) algorithm and an inner approximation (IA) algorithm, are developed to tackle the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. Existing designs employ semidefinite relaxation in AltMin-based algorithms, which, however, cannot ensure convergence. In contrast, the proposed penalty-based AltMin and IA algorithms are guaranteed to converge to a stationary point and a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the design problem, respectively. Second, the impact of imperfect knowledge of the CSI of the channels between the AP and the users is investigated. To this end, a non-convex robust optimization problem is formulated and the penalty-based AltMin algorithm is extended to obtain a stationary solution. Simulation results reveal a key trade-off between the speed of convergence and the achievable total transmit power for the two proposed algorithms. In addition, we show that the proposed algorithms can significantly reduce the total transmit power at the AP compared to various baseline schemes and that the optimal numbers of transmit antennas and IRS reflecting elements, which maximize the system energy efficiency of the considered system, are finite. A multiperiodic structure always underlies the procurement problem in practice. Option contracts are widely used to make a firm capable of responding flexibly to high demand uncertainty. However, so far, the impact of different option contracts on the multiperiod decisions and performance of a firm has been not discussed. Motivated by this problem, in this paper we analyze the multiperiod procurement problem within the framework of wholesale price, call, put, and bidirectional option contracts. Based on the dynamic programming theory, we characterize the structure of the firm's optimal replenishment policy for each period in four cases. We then develop a heuristic to approximate the corresponding policy parameters. Through system comparisons of four cases, we examine the value of option contracts for the firm and discuss the best option contract type for the firm. The results show that the firm will gain higher profits after the option contracts are introduced. Moreover, if the unit purchase and exercise costs of the bidirectional option are equal to those of the unilateral option, then bidirectional option contracts are preferred over unilateral option contracts. If the unit purchase cost of the bidirectional option is higher than that of the unilateral option, unilateral option contracts may be more profitable than bidirectional option contracts. Furthermore, if the unit backlogging cost is high and the unit inventory holding cost is low, call option contracts are better than put option contracts; if the unit backlogging cost is low and the unit inventory holding cost is high, then put option contracts work better than call option contracts. This paper considers optimal joint time, frequency, and power allocation for energy-efficient device-to-device (D2D) communications in an overlay cellular network, where multiple D2D transmitters communicate with their corresponding D2D receivers while utilizing the energy harvested from a cellular base station (BS). Due to channel estimation error and feedback delays, the channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitters is usually imperfect, which can significantly deteriorate the energy efficiency (EE) of the considered system. To mitigate the impact of imperfect CSI, we formulate a non-convex robust optimization problem for the maximization of the EE (in bits/Joule) of the system while ensuring quality of service (QoS) requirements on the minimum data rata and the minimum amount of harvested energy for cellular and D2D users, respectively. We reveal that the optimal energy-efficient D2D transmission should exhaust all the harvested energy of each D2D transmitter. Exploiting this fact, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm for obtaining the optimal solution. To strike a balance between performance and computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm. Simulation results show that compared with several baseline schemes, both the proposed optimal and suboptimal algorithms can significantly improve the EE of wireless-powered D2D communications under imperfect CSI.
