A new long-term emission inventory called the Inversed Emission Inventory for Chinese Air Quality (CAQIEI) was developed in this study by assimilating surface observations from the China National Environmental Monitoring Centre (CNEMC) using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the Nested Air Quality Prediction Modeling System (NAQPMS). This inventory contains the constrained monthly emissions of NOx, SO2, CO, primary PM2.5, primary PM10, and NMVOCs in China from 2013 to 2020, with a horizontal resolution of 15 km × 15 km. This paper documents detailed descriptions of the assimilation system and the evaluation results for the emission inventory. The results suggest that CAQIEI can effectively reduce the biases in the a priori emission inventory, with the normalized mean biases ranging from -9.1% to 9.5% in the a posteriori simulation, which are significantly reduced from the biases in the a priori simulations (-45.6% to 93.8%). The calculated RMSEs (0.3 mg/m³ for CO and 9.4-21.1 µg/m³ for other species, on the monthly scale) and correlation coefficients (0.76-0.94) were also improved from the a priori simulations, suggesting that CAQIEI can reasonably reproduce the magnitude and variation of emissions of different air pollutants in China. Based on CAQIEI, we estimated China's total emissions (including both natural and anthropogenic emissions) of the 6 species in 2015 to be as follows: 25.2 Tg of NOx, 17.8 Tg of SO2, 465.4 Tg of CO, 15.0 Tg of PM2.5, 40.1 Tg of PM10, and 46.0 Tg of NMVOCs. From 2015 to 2020, the total emissions reduced by 54.1% for SO2, 44.4% for PM2.5, 33.6% for PM10, 35.7% for CO, and 15.1% for NOx, but increased by 21.0% for NMVOCs. Larger emission reductions were achieved during the 2018-2020 action plan than during the 2013-2017 action plan for most species. In particular, NOx and NMVOC emissions were shown to increase during the 2013-2017 action plain, and there were obvious emission increases in the Fengwei Plain area over the Central China region. However, NOx and NMVOC emissions declined during the 2018-2020 action plan, and the emissions over the Fengwei Plain area also decreased. This suggests that the emission control policies were improved in the 2018-2020 action plan. We also compared CAQIEI with previous inventories, which verified our inversion results in terms of total emissions of NOx, SO2 and NMVOCs, and more importantly identified the potential uncertainties in our current understanding of China's air pollutant emissions. Firstly, CO emissions in China may be substantially underestimated by current inventories, with the CO emissions estimated by CAQIEI (426.8 Tg) being more than twice the amount in previous inventories (120.7-237.7 Tg). Significant underestimations for other air pollutant emissions may also exist over western and northeastern China. In addition, the NMVOC emissions were shown to be substantially underestimated over northern China but overestimated in southern China. Secondly, the emission reduction rates during 2015-2018 estimated by CAQIEI are generally smaller than those estimated by previous inventories, especially for NOx, PM10 and NMVOCs, suggesting that the mitigation effects of the air pollution control may be overestimated currently. In particular, China's NMVOC emissions were shown to have increased by 26.6% from 2015 to 2018, especially over the North China Plain by 38.0%), Northeast China (by 38.3%), and Central China (60.0%). In contrast, the emissions reduction rate of CO may be underestimated. Overall, our emissions inventory sheds new light on the complex variations of air pollutant emissions in China during its two recent clean air action periods, which could significantly improve our understanding of air pollutant emissions and related changes in air quality in China. This paper presents the extension of industry modelling within the REMIND integrated assessment model to industry subsectors, and the projection of future industry subsector activity and energy demand for different baseline scenarios for use with the REMIND model. The industry sector is the largest greenhouse gas-emitting energy demand sector and considered a mitigation bottleneck. At the same time, industry subsectors are heterogeneous and face distinct emission mitigation challenges. By extending the multi-region, general equilibrium integrated assessment model REMIND to an explicit representation of four industry subsectors (cement, chemicals, steel, and other industry production), along with subsector-specific carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), we are able to investigate industry emission mitigation strategies in the context of the entire energyeconomy- climate system, covering mitigation options ranging from reduced demand for industrial goods, over fuel switching and electrification, to endogenous energy efficiency increases and carbon capture.We also present the derivation of both activity and final energy demand trajectories for the industry subsectors for the use with the REMIND model in baseline scenarios, based on short-term the continuation of historic trends and long-term global convergence. The system allows for selective variation of specific subsector activity and final energy demand across scenarios and regions to create consistent scenarios for a wide range of socioeconomic drivers and scenario story lines, like the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). Aviation emission accounting is the key to establishing market measures to control aviation pollutant emissions. Based on the fuel percentage method (FPM), this paper applies the improved BFFM2-FOA-FPM (Boeing Fuel Flow Method 2–First Order Approximation FPM) to calculate the emissions of six pollutants (CO 2 , CO, HC, NO x , SO 2 , and PM 2.5) between Chinese and foreign cities from 2014 to 2019, including CCD (climbing, cruising, and descending) emissions and LTO (landing and take-off) emissions. The error rate between the calculated results and the official data is about 2.75 %. The results show that the emissions of six pollutants changed before and after the proposal of the "Carbon Neutral Growth 2020" strategy (CNG2020 strategy). Although the total amount has increased, the average emission per tonne-kilometer of CO 2 , CO, HC, NO x , SO 2 , and PM 2.5 has decreased by 17.77 %, 17.26 %, 25.15 %, 14.32 %, 17.77 %, and 16.35 %, respectively. The results of this paper can provide a data basis and method reference for implementing the CNG2020 strategy and realizing global carbon emission reduction goals. This paper discusses the newly developed Decision Support System version 1.0 (DSS v1.0) for air quality management activities in Delhi, India. In addition to standard air quality forecasts, DSS provides the contribution of Delhi, its surrounding districts, and stubble-burning fires in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana to the PM2.5 load in Delhi. DSS also quantifies the effects of local and neighborhood emission-source-level interventions on the pollution load in Delhi. The DSS-simulated Air Quality Index for the post-monsoon and winter seasons of 2021-22 shows high accuracy (up to 80%) and a very low false alarm ratio (~20%) from Day 1 to Day 5 of the forecasts, especially when the ambient AQI is > 300. During the post-monsoon season (winter season), emissions from Delhi, the rest of the NCR districts, biomass-burning activities, and all other remaining regions on average contribute 34.4% (33.4%), 31% (40.2%), 7.3% (0.1%), and 27.3% (26.4%), respectively, to PM2.5 load in Delhi. During peak pollution events (stubble-burning periods), however, the contribution from sources within Delhi (farm fires in Punjab-Haryana) could reach 65% (69%). According to DSS, a 20% (40%) reduction in anthropogenic emissions across all NCR districts would result in a 12% (24%) reduction in PM2.5 in Delhi on a seasonal mean basis. In this paper, complex network theory has been applied to reveal the transport patterns and cooperative regions of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) over China from 2015 to 2019. The results show that the degrees, weighted degrees, and edge lengths of PM 2.5 cities follow power law distributions. We find that the cities in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei–Henan–Shandong (BTHHS) region have a strong ability to export PM 2.5 pollution to other cities. By analyzing the transport routes, we show that a mass of links extends southward from the BTHHS to the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) regions with 1 or 2 d time lags. Hence, we conclude that earlier emission reduction in the BTHHS region and early warning measures in the YRD region will provide better air pollution mitigation in both regions. Moreover, significant links are concentrated in wintertime, suggesting the impact of the winter monsoon. In addition, all cities have been divided into nine clusters according to their spatial correlations. We suggest that the cities in the same clusters should be regarded as a whole to control the level of air pollution. Parties to the Paris Agreement (PA,) outline their planned contributions towards achieving the PA temperature goal to "hold [...] the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 ∘ C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 ∘ C" (Article 2.1.a, PA) in their nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Most NDCs include targets to mitigate national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which need quantifications to assess i.a. whether the current NDCs collectively put us on track to reach the PA temperature goals or the gap in ambition to do so. We implemented the new open-source tool " NDCmitiQ " to quantify GHG mitigation targets defined in the NDCs for all countries with quantifiable targets on a disaggregated level and to create corresponding national and global emissions pathways. In light of the 5-year update cycle of NDCs and the global stocktake, the quantification of NDCs is an ongoing task for which NDCmitiQ can be used, as calculations can easily be updated upon submission of new NDCs. In this paper, we describe the methodologies behind NDCmitiQ and quantification challenges we encountered by addressing a wide range of aspects, including target types and the input data from within NDCs; external time series of national emissions, population, and GDP; uniform approach vs. country specifics; share of national emissions covered by NDCs; how to deal with the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) component and the conditionality of pledges; and establishing pathways from single-year targets. For use in NDCmitiQ , we furthermore construct an emissions data set from the baseline emissions provided in the NDCs. Example use cases show how the tool can help to analyse targets on a national, regional, or global scale and to quantify uncertainties caused by a lack of clarity in the NDCs. Results confirm that the conditionality of targets and assumptions about economic growth dominate uncertainty in mitigated emissions on a global scale, which are estimated as 48.9–56.1 Gt CO2eq. AR4 for 2030 (10th/90th percentiles, median: 51.8 Gt CO2eq. AR4; excluding LULUCF and bunker fuels; submissions until 17 April 2020 and excluding the USA). We estimate that 77 % of global 2017 emissions were emitted from sectors and gases covered by these NDCs. This paper describes version 2.0 of the Global Change and Air Pollution (GCAP 2.0) model framework, a one-way offline coupling between version E2.1 of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) general circulation model (GCM) and the GEOS-Chem global 3-D chemical-transport model (CTM). Meteorology for driving GEOS-Chem has been archived from the E2.1 contributions to phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) for the pre-industrial era and the recent past. In addition, meteorology is available for the near future and end of the century for seven future scenarios ranging from extreme mitigation to extreme warming. Emissions and boundary conditions have been prepared for input to GEOS-Chem that are consistent with the CMIP6 experimental design. The model meteorology, emissions, transport, and chemistry are evaluated in the recent past and found to be largely consistent with GEOS-Chem driven by the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) product and with observational constraints.
