A mixed culture of microalgae, containing two Scenedesmus species, was analysed to determine its potential in coupling of pulp and paper mill effluent treatment and microalgal cultivation. Laboratory studies suggested that 60% concentration of wastewater was optimum for microalgal cultivation. A maximum of 82% and 75% removal of BOD and COD respectively was achieved with microalgal cultivation in outdoor open pond. By the end of the cultivation period, 65% removal of NO3-N and 71.29% removal of PO4-P was observed. The fatty acid composition of mixed microalgal culture cultivated with effluent showed the palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid as major fatty acids. Energy-harnessing sources significantly influence a country's infrastructure and economic development. Though nuclear and hydel power sources are used for energy harnessing, thermal sources are still the primary power source in India and contribute to 75% of the demand. Thermal power plants exploit large volumes of coal reserves. The combustion of coal leads to 30%-40% of waste ash residues such as Fly ash and Bottom ash. Though Fly ash finds greater applicability, pond ash poses a severe environmental hazard due to its large occupancy of terrain in ash dykes and lagoons. Many research efforts are underway to utilize pond ash in various structural and geotechnical infrastructure projects; however, there are still limitations and apprehensions about its properties and determination. The present study provides a detailed review of the morphological and chemical properties. Further, the geotechnical attributes of pond ash, including strength characteristics, consolidation parameters, and durability aspects, are critically reviewed for the probable application as fill material for backfill and many other applications. Based on the earlier research on pond ash, it could be comprehended that pond ash has wide property variability and finds compatibility with many other pozzolanic admixtures and, in this way, finds broader applicability in geotechnical projects. Ponds are often identified by their small size and shallow depths, but the lack of a universal evidence-based definition hampers science and weakens legal protection. Here, we compile existing pond definitions, compare ecosystem metrics (e.g., metabolism, nutrient concentrations, and gas fluxes) among ponds, wetlands, and lakes, and propose an evidence-based pond definition. Compiled definitions often mentioned surface area and depth, but were largely qualitative and variable. Government legislation rarely defined ponds, despite commonly using the term. Ponds, as defined in published studies, varied in origin and hydroperiod and were often distinct from lakes and wetlands in water chemistry. We also compared how ecosystem metrics related to three variables often seen in waterbody definitions: waterbody size, maximum depth, and emergent vegetation cover. Most ecosystem metrics (e.g., water chemistry, gas fluxes, and metabolism) exhibited nonlinear relationships with these variables, with average threshold changes at 3.7 ± 1.8 ha (median: 1.5 ha) in surface area, 5.8 ± 2.5 m (median: 5.2 m) in depth, and 13.4 ± 6.3% (median: 8.2%) emergent vegetation cover. We use this evidence and prior definitions to define ponds as waterbodies that are small (< 5 ha), shallow (< 5 m), with < 30% emergent vegetation and we highlight areas for further study near these boundaries. Technologies based on microalgae-bacteria seem to be sustainable options for wastewater treatment and reuse, with lower costs than conventional biological treatment technologies. Furthermore, they can generate added-value products produced from algae biomass. Among other advantages, the consortium bacteriaalgae produce photosynthetic oxygen through the microalgae, which can be used by aerobic bacteria for oxidizing organic matter and nitrogen, thus reducing the need for introducing artificial oxygen. In this review paper, the main systems that use microalgaebacteria consortium are discussed. Microalgae-bacteria present advantages in the removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus, when compared with conventional biological treatment systems (e.g., activated sludge, percolating filters and ponds), and are able to produce final effluents for reuse (e.g., in agricultural irrigation, industry or aquifer recharge) and excess of microalgae that can be converted to added-value products such as biogas and biofuels. Attention is given to the innovative aspects of applying photobioreators to the treatment and reuse of pulp and paper effluents and fiber-waste-based recycling wastewaters, which seems to open a new opportunity for the pulp, paper and recycling paper industries. Water resource management aims to environmentally and economically satisfy the water demands of various water uses in a hydrological basin. Increasing demand for water, under the pressure of climate change impacts, is forcing water scientists and engineers to improve and develop new methods and approaches for integrating water resources management and protection, develop appropriate policies and define feasible governance structures. The results of model simulations show that surface water resources were sufficient to meet the water demand and water quality has not shown to be a significant factor for the development of surface water supplies. Although Greece is listed in the international rankings as a water-rich country, it has significant water problems due to its high temporal and spatial variation in the distribution of water resources and its unsustainable management practices, characterized by a fragmented and sector-oriented water management system. The article presents the results of a hydrogeological survey aimed to substantiate the engineering recultivation of accumulation ponds of lignin mud by inwashing it with coal ash. The ash bed causes compression consolidation of lignin bed, leading to an increase in the pond seal margin. The mass exchange between the ash and the lignin mud is accompanied by changes in the hydrogeochemical conditions: the mineralization of the liquid phase of technogenic soils increases by a factor of up to 8, and the concentration of microcomplex increases to very high values. The analysis of the qualitative state of groundwater showed it to be tolerant to the effect of accumulation ponds. The moderate deviation from the local natural background is due to other pollution sources. The applied recultivation technology is effective and environmentally safe, though it needs modernization. The alternative technology, proposed by OOO VEB-Inzhiniiring, i.e., grouting the pond content, is extremely hazardous, and the implementation of the project involves considerable environmental risk because of the possible loss of pond containment. The Prairie Pothole Region is one of the most wetland rich areas of the world and has experienced intense disturbance from increased agricultural demands and urban sprawl. This study assessed ponds across the urban gradient for the first time in the region to determine the impacts of urbanization on water quality. Thirty ponds (ten rural, ten peri-urban, and ten urban) were randomly selected and compared based on land use type and the impervious to pervious surface ratio within 1.6 km of each pond. Water quality samples were taken monthly in 2015 and 2016, across 3 and 6 months respectively. Assessment included chemical and physical parameters, which were compared spatially across the gradient and temporally between sampling periods. Results indicate disturbance from urbanization negatively impacts water quality. Spatially across the gradient, rural pond water quality was significantly different from both peri-urban and urban ponds, whereas peri-urban and urban pond water quality was not significantly different. Temporally, differences between water quality parameters and sampling periods indicate that surrounding land use, land cover, and precipitation influence parameter concentrations across the urbanization gradient. Mediterranean Temporary Ponds (MTPs) are among the most precious habitats in the Mediterranean bioclimatic because they shelter extremely rare and isolated organisms from different taxa and are included in Annex 1 of the Habitat Directive under code 3170*. Nevertheless, their conservation is highly precarious to such an extent to be considered a disappearing ecosystem. To evaluate the perspectives of MTPs in the third millennium, we carried out a literature search, getting on the trail of the string "Mediterranean Temporary Ponds" to answer the following questions: is the focus of these research papers on MTPs sensu Habitat Directive? Do the research areas of investigation mirror the habitat distribution? Which are the main gaps in the issues analysed? Are all the components of the system considered? Our results highlighted the great interest of the scientific community in MTPs. However, it also brought out several problems and knowledge gaps related to the different features analysed: in many cases in which code 3170* is reported, it is just mentioned; the geographical distribution of the studied areas revealed gaps, particularly in the east Mediterranean and throughout the biogeographic regions; among the issues analysed a dearth of research papers related to the identification of the habitat and effects of climate change has emerged; the studies on the biotic components are strongly unbalanced on vascular plants and abiotic components, such as hydrology and water quality, are scarcely investigated. Microplastics (MPs) with different physical-chemical properties are considered as vectors for the propagation of microbes in aquatic environments. It remains unclear how plastic types impact on the plastisphere and whether different MPs spread microbes more rapidly than natural materials in microbes across distinct water bodies as proposed previously. We used in-situ incubation to investigate the microbes attached on MPs of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), versus that on two natural microcarriers (quartz sands and bamboo) during the travel from aquaculture ponds with impacted by fish farming to adjacent freshwater stream. The results showed that the microbial communities on the carriers were shaped not only by environmental conditions, which were primary determinants but also by carrier types. All the tested plastics did not carry more microbes than the natural carriers during the journey. The biofilm community composition on PVC is distinct from that on PE and PP MPs and natural carriers. The plastisphere of PE and PP kept microbial proportions as natural materials did but PVC retained less than nature materials. Bamboo carried more potential pathogens than plastic polymers and quartz. Stormwater ponds are increasingly becoming a dominant pond type in cities experiencing urban sprawl. These human-made ponds are designed primarily to control flooding issues associated with increased impervious surface in cities and serve to retain sediment and contaminants before flowing to urban downstream waterways. Along with these important functions, constructed ponds including stormwater ponds may be critical in urban freshwater conservation because they often represent some of the few remaining lentic environments (still water; e.g. ponds, wetlands, lakes) in many cities. We currently lack a clear understanding of the role that stormwater ponds play in serving as habitat for freshwater biodiversity. Here, we examined whether stormwater ponds support freshwater biodiversity in cities by reviewing the empirical literature on biotic community responses in urban stormwater ponds across a range of taxonomic groups. We conducted a meta-analysis on empirical papers that quantitatively examined differences in taxonomic richness between stormwater ponds and reference ponds (n = 11 papers, 22 effects). We also examined a broader set of 58 papers to qualitatively synthesize studies on stormwater pond communities and assess various indicators of habitat quality in stormwater ponds. In the studies examined, heterogeneity exists in the habitat quality of stormwater ponds and increased pollutant loads are often reported. However, the results highlight that stormwater ponds tend to contain alpha diversity comparable to reference ponds, and that overall, a range of ecologically important wildlife make use of and inhabit urban stormwater ponds. We find that stormwater ponds can often support communities with broad compositions of taxa, including those that are sensitive or vulnerable to environmental change. During the process of cleaning aquaculture ponds, the drainage contributes significantly to antibiotic pollution in the surrounding water environment. Therefore, we conducted a study on the distribution of 26 antibiotics in 57 ponds within the Taihu Lake basin. The results revealed that the detection frequency of antibiotics ranged from 1.75 % to 80.7 %, with the overall detection concentrations ranging from 3.27 to 708.72 ng/L. Among them, the detection rate of 8 antibiotics exceeded 50 %. Regarding the spatial distribution, the concentration of antibiotics was relatively high in aquaculture ponds located in the Changzhou area, with the highest concentration reaching 708.72 ng/L. This observation is likely due to the large size and intensive breeding practices in Changzhou. Fish ponds exhibited a significantly higher total antibiotic concentration of 3.27 to 445.57 ng/L compared to crab ponds (13.01 to 206.30 ng/L) and shrimp ponds (23.17 to 107.40 ng/L). Quinolones and sulfonamides were the predominant antibiotic classes found in fish ponds, accounting for 51.49 % of the total antibiotic concentration. Notably, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and enrofloxacin (ENR) exhibited the highest antibiotic concentrations. Risk assessments demonstrated that SMX, ENR, and ofloxacin (OFX) contributed significantly to ecological risks. Furthermore, the study found that the tertiary constructed wetland treatment process achieved a remarkable removal rate of 92.44 % for antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater, while other treatment processes displayed limited effectiveness in removing antibiotics. Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a significant concern worldwide. The microbial community profile and potential AMR level in aquaculture ponds are often undervalued and attract less attention than other aquatic environments. We used amplicon and metagenomic shotgun sequencing to study microbial communities and AMR in six freshwater polyculture ponds in rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. Amplicon sequencing revealed different community structures between rural and urban ponds, with urban ponds having a higher bacterial diversity and opportunistic pathogens including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Corynebacterium. Despite proteobacterial dominance, Firmicutes was the most interactive in the community network, especially in the urban ponds. Metagenomes showed that drug resistance was the most common type of AMR found, while metal resistance was only observed in urban ponds. AMR and metal resistance genes were found mainly in beta and gamma-proteobacteria in urban ponds, while AMR was found primarily in alpha-proteobacteria in rural ponds. We identified potential pathogens with a high profile of AMR and metal resistance in urban aquaculture ponds. Microbial blooms have been reported in the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond at the Sellafield Nuclear Facility. The pond is kept alkaline with NaOH to minimise fuel rod corrosion, however alkali-tolerant microbial blooms dominated by the cyanobacterium Pseudanabaena catenata are able to thrive in this hostile environment. This study assessed the impact of alternative alkali-dosing regimens (KOH versus NaOH treatment) on biomass accumulation, using a P. catenata dominated mixed culture, which is representative of the pond environment. Optical density was reduced by 40-67 % with KOH treatment over the 3-month chemostat experiment. Microbial community analysis and proteomics demonstrated that the KOH-dependent inhibition of cell growth was mostly specific to P. catenata. The denitrification process in aquaculture systems plays a crucial role in nitrogen (N) cycle and N budget estimation. Reliable models are needed to rapidly quantify denitrification rates and assess nitrogen losses. This study conducted a comparative analysis of denitrification rates in fish, crabs, and natural ponds in the Taihu region from March to November 2021, covering a complete aquaculture cycle. The results revealed that aquaculture ponds exhibited higher denitrification rates compared to natural ponds. Key variables influencing denitrification rates were Nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 -N), Suspended particles (SPS), and chlorophyll a (Chla). There was a significant positive correlation between SPS concentration and denitrification rates. However, we observed that the denitrification rate initially rose with increasing Chla concentration, followed by a subsequent decline. To develop parsimonious models for denitrification rates in aquaculture ponds, we constructed five different statistical models to predict denitrification rates, among which the improved quadratic polynomial regression model (SQPR) that incorporated the three key parameters accounted for 80.7% of the variability in denitrification rates. Additionally, a remote sensing model (RSM) utilizing SPS and Chla explained 43.8% of the variability. The RSM model is particularly valuable for rapid estimation in large regions where remote sensing data are the only available source. Freshwater aquaculture serves as a significant focal point for antibiotic contamination, yet understanding antibiotic distribution across different aquaculture models and stages remains limited. This study evaluated antibiotic pollution in three distinct freshwater aquaculture models: rice-crayfish coculture, fish aquaculture, and crab-crayfish aquaculture, during various aquaculture stages. Of the 33 target antibiotics, 16 antibiotics were detected, with the total concentrations ranging from 111.81 ng/L to 15,949.05 ng/L in water and 10.11 ng/g to 8986.30 ng/g in sediment. Among these antibiotics, erythromycin and lomefloxacin are prohibited for use in Chinese aquaculture. Dominant antibiotics in water included lincomycin, enrofloxacin, and enoxacin, whereas in sediment, oxytetracycline and erythromycin were predominant. Notably, lincomycin emerged as a dominant antibiotic in aquaculture for the first time. The concentrations of these dominant antibiotics were high compared to other aquaculture settings and exhibited elevated ecological risk. Critical periods for antibiotic contamination in water and sediment were found to be incongruent, occurring during the rainy season in July for water and the dry season in October for sediment. Notably, the rice-crayfish coculture model exerts a good effect in reducing antibiotic pollution. Inland waters are among the most threatened biodiversity hotspots. Ponds located in alpine areas are experiencing more rapid and dramatic water temperature increases than any other biome. Despite their prevalence, alpine ponds and their biodiversity responses to climate change have been poorly explored, reflecting their small size and difficult access. To understand the effects of climate change on alpine pond biodiversity, we performed a comprehensive literature review for papers published since 1955. Through analysis of their geographic distribution, environmental features, and biodiversity values, we identified which environmental factors related to climate change would have direct or indirect effects on alpine pond biodiversity. We then synthesized this information to produce a conceptual model of the effects of climate change on alpine pond biodiversity. Increased water temperature, reduced hydroperiod, and loss of connectivity between alpine ponds were the main drivers of biodiversity geographic distribution, leading to predictable changes in spatial patterns of biodiversity. We identified three major research gaps that, if addressed, can guide conservation and restoration strategies for alpine ponds biodiversity in an uncertain future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As of now, submerged plants and biochar have demonstrated significant benefits in aquaculture pond sediment remediation. However, there is limited research on the synergistic effects of biochar and submerged plants in mitigating hydrophobic organic contaminant (HOC) accumulation in aquaculture benthic organisms and in controlling the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) levels in aquaculture water. This study assesses a submerged plant-biochar system's efficacy in removing HOCs from simulated freshwater aquaculture ponds. Vallisneria natans was planted in sediment with varying levels of wheat straw biochar, while Corbicula fluminea served as the targeted benthic organism. The bioaccumulation experiment identified the optimal biochar ratio for the Vallisneria natans-biochar system in controlling HOCs in aquaculture products. Analyses included final accumulation concentrations in benthic organisms, changes in freely-dissolved concentrations in aquaculture sediment, and a mass balance calculation to explore key factors in their removal from the system. Results indicated that the Vallisneria natans-1.5% biochar composite system achieved optimal control of HOCs in sediment and aquaculture products. Biochar addition to the sediment in the composite system demonstrated a "promotion with low addition, inhibition with high addition" effect on Vallisneria natans growth. Notably, the addition of 1.5% biochar (VN1.5 group) significantly promoted the growth of Vallisneria natans leaves and roots. Comparing the final pollutant proportions in different environmental media, concentrations in water (0.20%-1.8%), clam accumulation (0.032%-0.11%), and plant absorption (0.10%-0.44%) constituted a minimal portion of the overall pollutant load in the system. The majority of pollutants (24%-65%) were degraded in the aquaculture environment, with microbial degradation likely playing a predominant role. The integration of cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and machine learning (ML) has the potential to significantly enhance the productivity and profitability of traditional fish farming. Farmers using traditional fish farming methods incur enormous economic costs owing to labor-intensive schedule monitoring and care, illnesses, and sudden fish deaths. Another ongoing issue is automated fish species recommendation based on water quality. On the one hand, the effective monitoring of abrupt changes in water quality may minimize the daily operating costs and boost fish productivity, while an accurate automatic fish recommender may aid the farmer in selecting profitable fish species for farming. In this paper, we present AquaBot, an IoT-based system that can automatically collect, monitor, and evaluate the water quality and recommend appropriate fish to farm depending on the values of various water quality indicators. A mobile robot has been designed to collect parameter values such as the pH, temperature, and turbidity from all around the pond. To facilitate monitoring, we have developed web and mobile interfaces. For the analysis and recommendation of suitable fish based on water quality, we have trained and tested several ML algorithms, such as the proposed custom ensemble model, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), bagging, boosting, and stacking, on a real-time pond water dataset. The dataset has been preprocessed with feature scaling and dataset balancing. We have evaluated the algorithms based on several performance metrics. In our experiment, our proposed ensemble model has delivered the best result, with 94% accuracy, 94% precision, 94% recall, a 94% F1-score, 93% MCC, and the best AUC score for multi-class classification. Finally, we have deployed the best-performing model in a web interface to provide cultivators with recommendations for suitable fish farming. Our proposed system is projected to not only boost production and save money but also reduce the time and intensity of the producer's manual labor.

Myxozoans are obligate parasites with complex life cycles, typically infecting fish and annelids. Here, we examined annelids from fish farm pond sediments in the Beit Shean Valley, in the Syrian-African Rift Valley, Israel, for myxozoan infections. We examined 1486 oligochaetes, and found 74 (5 %) were infected with actinospore stages. We used mitochondrial 16S sequencing to infer identity of 25 infected annelids as species of Potamothrix, Psammoryctides, Tubifex and Dero. We identified 7 myxozoan types from collective groups Neoactinomyxum and Sphaeractinomyxon, and characterized them by small subunit ribosomal DNA sequencing. The Neoactinomyxum type was genetically most similar (∼93 %) to cyprinid fish-infecting Myxobolus spp. The six Sphaeractinomyxon types were genetically similar (93-100 %) to Mugilid-infecting Myxobolus spp.; with one being the previously unknown actinospore stage of a myxospore that infects mullet from aquaculture from the Israeli coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Monitoring the spatiotemporal variation in coastal aquaculture zones is essential to providing a scientific basis for formulating scientifically reasonable land management policies. This study uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) remote sensing cloud platform to extract aquaculture information based on Landsat series and Sentinel-2 images for the six years of 1984 to 2021 (1984, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2016 and 2021), so as to analyze the changes in the coastal aquaculture pond area, along with its spatiotemporal characteristics, of Jiangsu Province. The overall area of coastal aquaculture ponds in Jiangsu shows an increasing trend in the early period and a decreasing trend in the later period. Over the past 37 years, the area of coastal aquaculture ponds has increased by a total of 54,639.73 ha. Aquaculture pond sediments have a notable influence on the ecosystem balance and farmed animal health. In this study, microalgal-bacterial immobilization (MBI) was designed to improve aquaculture pond sediments via synergistic interactions. The physicochemical characteristics, bacterial communities, and the removal efficiencies of emerging pollutants were systematically investigated. The consortium containing diatom Navicula seminulum and Alcaligenes faecalis was cultivated and established in the free and immobilized forms for evaluating the treatment performance. The results indicated that the immobilized group exhibited superior performance in controlling nutrient pollutants, shaping and optimizing the bacterial community compositions with the enrichment of functional bacteria. Additionally, it showed a stronger positive correlation between the bacterial community shifts and nutrient pollutants removal compared to free cells. Furthermore, the immobilized system maintained the higher removal performance of emerging pollutants (heavy metals, antibiotics, and pathogenic Vibrios) than free group. Unlocking the full potential of ponds (small water bodies) and pondscapes (network of ponds) as Nature-based Solutions (NbS) is critical pursuit for enhancing ecosystems and societal resilience to climate change and other societal challenges. Despite scattered initiatives for pond/pondscape creation, restoration and management-each considered here a distinct NbS-there is a significant knowledge gap in utilising ponds/pondscapes as effective NbS. We aimed to assess these NbS in terms of their objectives, outcomes, effectiveness, multifunctionality, delivery of potentially conflicting effects, and the implementation process while considering their Nature's Contributions to People (NCPs, i.e., benefits to society). We compiled data on 183 NbS actions implemented across 93 ponds/pondscapes from 24 countries, predominantly from Europe, via a questionnaire distributed to experienced stakeholders implementing NbS in ponds/pondscapes. One single pond/pondscape may imply more than one NbS action. Two-thirds were in rural areas, and one-third in urban settings. Our analysis revealed that Creation of habitat for biodiversity was a primary delivery objective (targeted NCP) in the implementation of most NbS in ponds/pondscapes, often also combined with other NCPs such as Learning and inspiration, Regulation of water quantity, and Physical and psychological experiences, showcasing their intended multifunctionality. Implemented NbS primarily focused on climate change adaptation (especially Regulation of hazards and extreme events, and water quantity) rather than mitigation, with less emphasis on measures like direct greenhouse gas emissions reduction or enhancing carbon sinks. The costs associated with pond's NbS varied significantly depending on factors such as project scope, objectives, location, socio-economic-cultural system, and specific implementation requirements. The creation of ponds/pondscapes often entailed the highest financial investment, much more than their restoration or their management. In conclusion, our study underscores the multifunctionality of ponds/pondscapes and provides insights about their significant potential as cost-effective NbS for enhancing ecosystem and societal resilience to climate change and biodiversity. This article aims to address the issues of low cultivation density and high labor intensity of manual water exchange in existing scallop seedling ponds, an upwelling recirculating water system for scallop larval cultivation is designed. EDEM-Fluent coupled modelwas used to simulate themovement of scallop larvae in the culture cone in order to guarantee the uniform distribution of larvae in the cultivation device. Design-Expert software was utilized to investigate the impact of the bottom cone angle(θ), the column height/cone height ratio(n) and the inflow velocity(v) on the variation coefficients of the axial and radial distributions of D-shaped larvae within the culture cone. The results indicated that θ = 108.97° and n = 1.8 represent the ideal structural parameters for the culture cone. The further investigation of the culture cones prototype was conducted to examine the impact of the inlet deflector angle (α), cultivation density (τ), and inflow velocity (v) on its performance. θ=108.97°, n=1.8, v=0.19m/s, α=60.94°, and τ=110pcs/ml were found to be the ideal combination of parameters, in this scenario, the D-shaped larvae's radial distributions' coefficients of variation is 22.13%, the error between the experimental and simulation results is 4.41%. Objective: Automatic feeders are commonly used in aquaculture, but the feed delivery pattern cannot be adjusted to accommodate a variety of rearing unit sizes. For those few feeders that can be adjusted, their use has been limited because of initial costs, availability, and other issues. This paper describes modification to a commercially available fish feeder (Texas Hunter Products 31.75‐kg [70‐lb] Lake and Pond Directional Fish Feeder) to effectively provide feed to different‐sized ponds. Methods: This feeder has a 14‐m fish feed distribution pattern, making it unusable for smaller ponds. To reduce the distance of fish feed projected from the feeder, a resistor (rheostat) was installed in series with the fan motor. Result: The rheostat reduced the power to the fan motor, thereby decreasing the feed projection distance. In addition, because the rheostat was adjustable, the resistance—and the resulting power to the fan motor—could be easily changed, making it possible for the same feeder to be used in different‐sized ponds while using approximately the same amount of power from the battery and solar panels. Conclusion: This modification was inexpensive and relatively easy to perform. The feeders reliably dispensed feed in a number of small ponds during an 8‐month evaluation period. The paper is aimed at reconstruction of a source term for external exposure of population that inhabited the banks of the Techa River from 1949 to 1956. The composition of γ-emitting nuclides contributing to radiation environment of the river banks and floodplain is also studied. The γ-emitting nuclides entered the river system both in solutions and as industrial and natural suspended matter. The paper considers archive data on measured parameters of radiation contamination of the Techa bottom sediments and riverside area. Results of the present-day radiation surveys of the Techa River show that the distribution of the exposure dose rate has a pronounced spotted and non-monotonic character along the entire river stretch and is due to sedimentation of suspended particles contaminated with the γ-emitting nuclides on the soil surface. The activity of γ-emitting nuclides accumulated in the upper reaches of the river due to sorption of water-soluble radionuclides onto bottom sediments and to sedimentation of contaminated suspended matter on the surface of bottom sediments was calculated using a stationary sorption model and a hydrodynamic model of settling ponds. Until July 1951, when the river runoff did not exceed 1 m3/s, practically all industrial and natural suspended particles settled to and accumulated at the bottom of Metlinsky Pond. Only a small portion of clay particles could enter the river below the dam of Metlinsky Pond. 95Zr and 95Nb are of high importance for reconstruction of the radiation environment in the Techa riverside area, because before 1953 the activity of the bottom sediments in all segments of the river was predominantly determined by these γ-emitting nuclides. There is practically no sorption of 95Nb onto bottom sediments and suspended matter, and the river flow carries predominantly soluble 95Nb species. 95Zr, on the contrary, is strongly sorbed onto bottom sediments and can be transferred for long distances only as suspended matter or bed silt. Until October 1951, the radiation environment along the entire river stretch below Metlinsky Pond was contributed predominantly by 95Nb and was characterized by uniform and stable contamination level in all swampy areas of the floodplain. Vast contamination of the bottom sediments and the floodplain along the entire river stretch by other γ-emitting nuclides (95Zr, 137Cs, 141,144Ce, 103,106Ru, etc.) could result only from "washing" of Metlinsky Pond in October 1951, when the flow rate in the upper reaches of the river was up to 30 m3/s. Mine pollution from mining activities is often widely recognised as a serious threat to public health, with mine solid waste causing problems such as tailings pond accumulation, which is considered the biggest hidden danger. The construction of tailings ponds not only causes land occupation and vegetation damage but also brings about potential environmental pollution, such as water and dust pollution, posing a health risk to nearby residents. If remote sensing images and machine learning techniques could be used to determine whether a tailings pond might have potential pollution and safety hazards, mainly monitoring tailings ponds that may have potential hazards, it would save a lot of effort in tailings ponds monitoring. Therefore, based on this background, this paper proposes to classify tailings ponds into two categories according to whether they are potentially risky or generally safe and to classify tailings ponds with remote sensing satellite images of tailings ponds using the DDN + ResNet-50 machine learning model based on ML.Net developed by Microsoft. In the discussion section, the paper introduces the environmental hazards of mine pollution and proposes the concept of "Healthy Mine" to provide development directions for mining companies and solutions to mine pollution and public health crises. Microbial communities in surface waters are affected by environmental conditions and can influence changes in water quality. To explore the hypothesis that the microbiome in agricultural waters associates with spatiotemporal variations in overall water quality and, in turn, has implications for resource monitoring and management, we characterized the relationships between the microbiota and physicochemical properties in a model irrigation pond as a factor of sampling time (i.e., 9:00, 12:00, 15:00) and location within the pond (i.e., bank vs. interior sites and cross-sectional depths at 0, 1, and 2 m). The microbial communities, which were defined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, significantly varied based on all sampling factors (PERMANOVA P < 0.05 for each). While the relative abundances of dominant phyla (e.g., Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) were relatively stable throughout the pond, subtle yet significant increases in α-diversity were observed as the day progressed (ANOVA P < 0.001). Key water quality properties that also increased between the morning and afternoon (i.e., pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature) positively associated with relative abundances of Cyanobacteria, though were inversely proportional to Verrucomicrobia. These properties, among additional parameters such as bioavailable nutrients (e.g., NH 3 , NO 3 , PO 4 ), chlorophyll, phycocyanin, conductivity, and colored dissolved organic matter, exhibited significant relationships with relative abundances of various bacterial genera as well. Further investigation of the microbiota in underlying sediments revealed significant differences between the bank and interior sites of the pond (P < 0.05 for α- and β-diversity). Water clarity serves as both an indicator and a regulator of biological function in aquatic systems. Large-scale, consistent water clarity monitoring is needed for informed decision-making. Inland freshwater ponds and lakes across Cape Cod, a 100-km peninsula in Massachusetts, are of particular interest for water clarity monitoring. Secchi disk depth (SDD), a common measure of water clarity, has been measured intermittently for over 200 Cape Cod ponds since 2001. Field-measured SDD data were used to estimate SDD from satellite data, leveraging the NASA/USGS Landsat Program and Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, spanning 1984 to 2022. Random forest machine learning models were generated to estimate SDD from satellite reflectance data and maximum pond depth. Spearman rank correlations (r s ) were "strong" for Landsat 5 and 7 (r s  = 0.78 and 0.79), and "very strong" for Landsat 8, 9, and Sentinel-2 (r s  = 0.83, 0.86, and 0.80). Mean absolute error also indicated strong predictive capacity, ranging from 0.65 to 1.05 m, while average bias ranged from -0.20 to 0.06 m. Long- and recent short-term changes in satellite-estimated SDD were assessed for 193 ponds, selected based on surface area and the availability of maximum pond depth data. Long-term changes between 1984 and 2022 established a retrospective baseline using the Mann-Kendall test for trend and Theil-Sen slope. Generally, long-term water clarity improved across the Cape; 149 ponds indicated increasing water clarity, and 8 indicated deteriorating water clarity. Recent short-term changes between 2021 and 2022 identified ponds that may benefit from targeted management efforts using the Mann-Whitney U test. Between 2021 and 2022, 96 ponds indicated deteriorations in water clarity, and no ponds improved in water clarity. While the 193 ponds analyzed here constitute only one quarter of Cape Cod ponds, they represent 85% of its freshwater surface area, providing the most spatially and temporally comprehensive assessment of Cape Cod ponds to date. Efforts are focused on Cape Cod, but can be applied to other areas given the availability of local field data. Inland ponds exhibit remarkable ubiquity across the globe, playing a vital role in the sustainability of global continental freshwater resources and contributing significantly to their biodiversity. Numerous ponds are eutrophic and experience recurrent seasonal or year-round algal blooms or persistent duckweed cover, conferring a characteristic green hue. Here, we denote these eutrophic and green ponds as EGPs. The excessive proliferation of algal blooms and duckweed within these EGPs poses a significant threat to the ecological functioning of these aquatic systems, which can lead to hypoxia or the release of microcystins. To identify these EGPs automatically, we constructed an Efficient Attention Fusion Unet (EAF-Unet) algorithm using Gaofen-2 (GF2) panchromatic and multispectral imagery. The attention mechanism was incorporated in Unet to help better detect EGPs. Using the first EGP labeled dataset, we determined the best input feature combination (RGB, NIR, NDVI, and Bright) and the most effective encoding (Rasnet50) for EAF-Unet for distinguishing EGPs from other ground cover types. The evaluation indices - Precision (0.81), Recall (0.79), F1-Score (0.80), and Intersection over Union (IoU, 0.67) - indicate that EAF-Unet can accurately and robustly extract EGPs from GF2 images without relying on pond water masks. Remote-sensing EGP products can assist in identifying ponds with severe eutrophication. Aquaculture ponds are potential hotspots for carbon cycling and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) like CO 2 and CH 4 , but they are often poorly assessed in the global GHG budget. This study determined the temporal variations of CO 2 and CH 4 concentrations and diffusive fluxes and their environmental drivers in coastal aquaculture ponds in southeastern China over a five-year period (2017-2021). The findings indicated that CH 4 flux from aquaculture ponds fluctuated markedly year-to-year, and CO 2 flux varied between positive and negative between years. The coefficient of inter-annual variation of CO 2 and CH 4 diffusive fluxes was 168% and 127%, respectively, highlighting the importance of long-term observations to improve GHG assessment from aquaculture ponds. In addition to chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen as the common environmental drivers, CO 2 was further regulated by total dissolved phosphorus and CH 4 by dissolved organic carbon. Feed conversion ratio correlated positively with both CO 2 and CH 4 concentrations and fluxes, showing that unconsumed feeds fueled microbial GHG production. A linear regression based on binned (averaged) monthly CO 2 diffusive flux data, calculated from CO 2 concentrations, can be used to estimate CH 4 diffusive flux with a fair degree of confidence (r 2  = 0.66; p < 0.001). This algorithm provides a simple and practical way to assess the total carbon diffusive flux from aquaculture ponds. The design of novel electrode deflector structures (EDSs) introduced a promising strategy for enhancing raceway ponds performance, increasing carbon fixation, and improving microalgal biomass accumulation. The computational fluid dynamics, based flow field principles, proved that the potency of arc-shaped electrode deflector structures (A-EDS) and spiral electrode deflector structures (S-EDS) were optimal. These configurations yielded superior culture effects, notably reducing dead zones by 9.1% and 11.7%, while elevating biomass increments of 14.7% and 11.5% compared to the control, respectively. In comparison to scenarios without electrostatic field application, the A-EDS group demonstrated pronounced post-stimulation growth, exhibiting an additional biomass increase of 11.2%, coupled with a remarkable 23.6% surge in CO 2 fixation rate and mixing time reduction by 14.7%. The common tench is an important thermophilic freshwater fish used for aquaculture diversification. This species is farmed in ponds as well as caught in the wild in many European and China. Artificial reproduction under controlled conditions is one of the most important part of modern aquaculture. In this study, two experiments were conducted in which the influence of hormonal agents (Ovopel and Ovaprim - experiment I) and the origin of the spawning stock (wild and pond-cultured - experiment II) on the success of reproduction in terms of ovulation rate (%), latency time (h), pseudo-gonadosomatic index (PGSI, %), hatching rate (%), abnormal larvae rate (%), and spawning efficiency coefficient (Se) were examined. While the wild fish could not reproduce in the absence of hormonal treatment with 0 % ovulation rate. In all tested hormonal treatment allowed to obtain high-quality eggs with hatching rates of over 83 %. Significant differences in latency time were observed among groups from different origins, such as differences in ovulation rate (79 % vs. 90 %, for pond-cultured and wild fish, respectively), PGSI (8.2 vs. 8.9), and hatching rate (63.8 % vs. 84.3 %), which showed significantly better quality in fish from the wild than those from pond culture. The transformation from semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture to integrated aquaculture is an effective way to upgrade the aquaculture process. Integrated aquaculture is better able to maintain a healthy environment and a balanced ecosystem for the cultured species as well as producing high quality commodities at a high yield. In this study, we demonstrate that ecosystem modeling can be used to help optimize and promote the integrated aquaculture model. First, the aquaculture management and main biochemical processes were parametrized according to the biological populations present, the physical environment, and the management practices for the integrated aquaculture marine pond of Portunus trituberculatus- Penaeus japonicus- Sinonovacula constricta. The ecosystem model of the pond unit was constructed by coupling the individual growth models of the three cultured animals. The goodness-of-fit indicators showed that this model accurately reproduced the dynamics of the cultured animals, plankton, and nutrients. After the ecosystem model was constructed and validated, the carrying capacity of the integrated aquaculture pond was evaluated by adjusting the stocking density and management practices based on the tailwater discharge standards. The economic benefits of the system and the ecological benefits of polyculture razor clams were quantitatively compared under two scenarios: the current stocking density and reaching the maximum capacity. The assessment results show that the aquaculture pond reached the carrying capacity when the stocking density was 1.8 times the current scenario (18 ind m -2 , 27 ind m -2 , 22 ind m -2 for P. trituberculatus, P. japonicus and S. constricta). At 1.8 times stocking density scenario, the profit increased by 51.59 %, and nitrogen and phosphorus removal increased by 51.48 % and 55.55 %, respectively. These results provide a theoretical basis for this integrated aquaculture model, which offers a promising way forward for sustainable industrial development. Site-specific approaches for managing food safety hazards in agricultural water require an understanding of foodborne pathogen ecology. This study identified factors associated with Salmonella contamination in Virginia ponds. Grab samples (250 mL, N = 600) were collected from 30 sites across nine ponds. Culture- and culture-independent (CIDT)-based methods were used to detect Salmonella in each sample. Salmonella isolated by culture-based methods were serotyped by Kauffman-White classification. Environmental data were collected for each sample. McNemar's χ 2 was used to determine if Salmonella detection differed by testing method. Separate mixed effect models were used to identify environmental factors associated with culture and CIDT-based Salmonella detection. Separate models were built for each pond, and for all ponds combined. Salmonella detection differed significantly (p < 0.001) between CIDT (31 %; 183/600)- and culture (13 %; 77/600)-based methods. Culture-based methods yielded 11 different serovars. All cultured Salmonella samples were confirmed by CIDT; 42.1 % of CIDT Salmonella-positive samples could be cultured. Associations between environmental factors and Salmonella detection also varied substantially by pond and detection method. In the all-pond model, associations were observed for five factors (total coliforms, Escherichia coli, air temperature, UV, rain) for both culture- and CIDT-based Salmonella detection. Rain prior to sampling (24 h) increased odds of Salmonella detection for culture (OR = 5.09) and CIDT (OR = 3.62) in the all-pond model. When all the pond data were used, models masked associations at the individual pond level, as there were noticeable differences between ponds and the odds of isolating Salmonella by environmental factors. Ponds were within a 187-ha area in this study, emphasizing water management needs to be individualized (i.e., assess hazards/risks by pond). In this paper, by using GNSS technologies, some features of the distribution and some morphometric parameters of dams and ponds created by the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber L.) along ten rivers of the Volga-Kama region of European Russia were identified. Detected features depend on the geomorphological, lithological, and landscape features of these rivers and their basins. The significant role of river slopes, as well as landscape zoning, in the distribution of beaver dams and ponds along small rivers in the study region is shown. In the rivers under study, almost all beaver constructions are located on riverbed slopes of less than 3% (most often, less than 2%). In the south of the forest zone (the southern taiga of the Vyatka River basin), the majority of dams and ponds (about 90%) are located on slopes of less than 1%, while, within the uplands of the forest-steppe zone, this location varies depending on the length of the rivers. In general, the greater the average slope of the river (the greater the average elevation of the river basin), the lower, other things being equal, the degree of beaver transformation of such rivers. This feature is better expressed in the rivers of the forest landscape zone and less expressed in the rivers flowing in the forest-steppe zone. Analysis of the morphometric parameters of beaver dams shows statistically significant trends towards an increase in their average height, as the channel slopes increase. Statistically significant trends were also identified towards a decrease in the length of dams and the length of associated ponds, with an increase in channel slopes. It is noteworthy that the critical values of the slope for a statistically significant and relatively sharp change in these parameters are 1.45%, 1.07 (or 0.54)%, and 0.65 (or 0.47)%, respectively. The greatest average heights of beaver dams are confined to those rivers where their basins are composed of loamy rocks/soils (especially those that are poorly plowed), compared with "sandy" river basins. This may be due to the peculiarities of the ratio of surface and underground water runoff in these basins and, as a consequence, different intensities of snowmelt- and rainfall-induced flood flow. The efficient management of slurry, which is a by-product rich in nutrients derived from feces, urine, cleaning water, and animal waste that stands out for its high concentration of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, is of vital importance, highlighting the importance of slurry management in storage ponds, which. The Murcia–Spain region has an important number of pig farms. Hence, infrastructures dedicated to managing by-products are necessary to prevent environmental pollution and eutrophication of groundwater. The aim of a recent study was to evaluate the relationship between electrical values and geochemical parameters of pig slurry stored in a pond using ERT and geochemical analysis. In addition, the study was designed to monitor the pond to determine the geochemical characteristics of the slurry and to assess the risk of lateral contamination. The study results indicate a noticeable decrease in electrical resistivity values at 0.4 and 1.6 m depth in surveys 1 and 2. The reduction ranges from 50 to 100 percent. This paper presents a new method for monitoring slurry ponds using electrical resistivity tomography. This non-invasive method provides detailed information on the distribution and characteristics of the fluids, as well as a clear picture of the electrical resistivity of the subsurface. A very noticeable increase in the beaver population (mainly the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber L.)) in the East European Plain since the end of the 20th century through reintroduction contributed to the emergence of a large number of beaver dams and ponds, which resulted in the transformation of the channels and the hydrological regime of small rivers. In this paper, for the first time in the Middle Volga region, regularities in the distribution of beaver dams and ponds on small rivers were revealed based on a topographic survey of the river channel, regulated by beaver activity in recent decades. The materials of the paper were obtained during field (geodetic) work in August and September of 2022 in the valleys of two small rivers typical for the north of the Volga Upland, Morkváshinka River (16.6 km) and Morkváshka River (7.8 km), with subsequent statistical processing. According to the results obtained, all the dams we encountered were located in the sections of their channels with relatively small (up to 1%) and medium (1–3%) average gradients. In the upper reaches of the rivers, the expansion of beaver activity is limited to the large gradients of their channels. Along the entire length, there is an alternation of sectors with a "natural" (not regulated by beavers) channel and a cascade of beaver ponds. Drained (at the time of the survey) sectors without dams, as well as those with preserved and destroyed dams, were also identified on the Morkváshinka River. On the whole, 26–48% of the length of the studied rivers has been transformed by beaver activity. The average number of dams per kilometer of the watercourse is 3.7–5.1. The most favorable channel gradients for beaver activity are 3.6–16.6 m/km, or 0.36–1.66%. The average gradient of the channel, above which no beaver dams and related ponds were found in these rivers, is 30 m/km, or 3%. An increase in the channel gradient upstream of the rivers is reflected in the size of beaver dams and ponds. The beaver dams and ponds are slightly larger in the sections of the rivers with a relatively small average gradient than in the sections with a medium average gradient of the channel. The large number of tailings ponds in my country, coupled with various man-made and natural factors in recent years, leads to the frequent occurrence of tailings pond accidents, causing serious harm. Mastering the number and distribution of tailings ponds is of great significance to prevent tailings pond accidents and carry out emergency management of tailings ponds. For the identification and monitoring of tailings ponds, the traditional survey methods are mainly based on ground surveys, and it is difficult to achieve large-scale and high-frequency detection. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, based on the support vector machine (SVM) method, the automatic extraction of remote sensing image (RSI) information has been realized, and remarkable achievements have been made in the field of remote sensing. This paper takes the tailings pond as the research goal, and based on the analysis of the characteristics of the tailings pond in the RSI, the method of SVM target detection is used to realize the rapid and high-precision identification of the tailings pond. The main contents of this paper are as follows: (1) The accident risk of tailings ponds at home and abroad and the status quo of tailings pond monitoring technology are introduced. (2) The relevant theory of SVM is learned, and the kernel function and corresponding parameter selection method of SVM are discussed in a multiclassification problem. (3) On the basis of determining the kernel function, parameters, and features, the trained model is compared with the original model.
