Background: Work-family enrichment refers to the extent to which experiences in one role improve the quality of life in another role, and the bidirectionality indicates that benefits derived from work can be applied to family and vice versa. Parent nurses, that is, female nurses who are raising preschool children, play a major role at work and in the family. Thus, work-family enrichment is significant for them. The Work-Family Enrichment Scale cannot be generalized to parent nurses. This study was aimed at developing and psychometrically validating a draft Work-Family Enrichment Scale for Parent Nurses. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,090 parent nurses who were randomly sampled from hospitals with more than 200 beds in Japan. The survey evaluated (1) a draft Work-Family Enrichment Scale for Parent Nurses, (2) the Japanese version of the Work-Family Enrichment Scale, and (3) the Positive Spillover Scale. The scales were psychometrically evaluated for internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion-related validity. Results: Data from 503 participants (age, mean ± standard deviation [range] 35.5 ± 4.96 [23–47] years) were analyzed. Results of exploratory factor analysis, the work to family enrichment direction yielded five factors for 23 items: "emotional fulfillment," "efficiency," "ability to lead," "displaying industriousness," and "self-growth." Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranged from 0.862 to 0.914. In the family-to-work enrichment direction, there were five factors for 28 items: "help-seeking," "receptiveness," "expansion of one's horizon," "efficiency," and "emotional fulfillment." Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranged from 0.790 to 0.907. Additionally, the correlation coefficients reporting criterion-related validity were 0.685 and 0.619 with regard to the Japanese version of the Work-Family Enrichment Scale and 0.596 and 0.534 with the Positive Spillover Scale for the Work-to-Family Enrichment Scale and the Family-to-Work Enrichment Scale for Parent Nurses, respectively. Conclusions: The Work-Family Enrichment Scale for Parent Nurses has adequate reliability and validity and can be used as an effective measure to assess the positive aspects of work and family roles among female parent nurses. Background: Previous research has shown a significant link between gut microbiota in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, much remains unknown because of the heterogeneity of disorders and the potential confounders such as dietary patterns and control group variations. Methods: Children aged 6–12 years who had been clinically diagnosed with ASD and/or ADHD, their unaffected neurotypical siblings, and non‐related neurotypical volunteers were recruited cross‐sectionally. The ASD diagnosis was confirmed using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule‐2 (ADOS‐2) in all patients, including those with ADHD. Standardized DNA extraction and sequencing methods were used to compare gut microbial alpha‐diversity among the groups. Dietary diversity was calculated from a standardized dietary questionnaire form. We compared the difference in gut microbiome between patients with ASD and/or ADHD with neurotypical siblings and non‐related neurotypical controls. Results: Ninety‐eight subjects were included in the study (18 with ASD, 19 with ADHD, 20 with both ASD and ADHD, 13 neurotypical siblings, and 28 non‐related neurotypical controls). The alpha‐diversity indices, such as Chao 1 and Shannon index, showed a significant difference between the groups in a Linear mixed‐effect model (F(4, 93) = 4.539, p =.02), (F(4, 93) = 3.185, p =.017), respectively. In a post‐hoc pairwise comparison, patients with ASD had lower alpha‐diversity compared with non‐related controls after Bonferroni correction. Dietary diversity shown in Shannon index did not differ among the groups (F(4, 84) = 1.494, p =.211). Conclusions: Our study indicates disorder‐specific microbiome differences in patients with ASD. In future research on gut microbiota in neurodevelopmental disorders, it is necessary to consider the impact of ASD and ADHD co‐occurrence, and strictly control for background information such as diet, to elucidate the gut–microbiota interaction in ASD and ADHD for exploring the potential of therapeutic interventions. Objective: To clarify the circumstances of help‐seeking preference among older adults in depopulated areas and the relationship between help‐seeking preference and social support. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional study that included a sample of 271 men and women aged 65–79 years living in Japan. A questionnaire survey was conducted to assess help‐seeking preference, social cohesion (community trust, norms of reciprocity and community attachment), socialising (interaction with neighbors and social network) and social support. Multiple regression analysis was performed with items that were found to be significantly associated with social support in the univariate analysis. Then, we examined the significance of the change in the coefficient of determination between a model that included help‐seeking preference as an independent variable and a model that did not. Results: Social support was related to help‐seeking preference, living arrangements, economic status, norms of reciprocity and social networks. There was a significant difference in the coefficient of determination between the models with and without help‐seeking preference. Conclusions: For older adults in depopulated areas to obtain social support, it is important to build trusting relationships with others and shows a willingness to seek and accept help. Introduction: Health literacy (HL) is correlated with the risk of mortality and readmission during cardiac rehabilitation. However, the correlation between HL and utility-based health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores has been poorly documented. Therefore, we examined the correlation between HL and utility-based HRQOL scores in participants undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: The data of 448 participants undergoing cardiac rehabilitation from the Kobe-Cardiac Rehabilitation Project for People Around the World (K-CREW) clinical trial were analyzed. Participants were divided into low and high HL cohorts. We used the 14-item Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14) to assess HL and the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire to assess HRQOL at discharge. The utility scores of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire were calculated. The median age was 71.0 [61.0–78.0] years, 75.7% of participants were male, and 60% had a low HL. Results: Median utility score was 0.88 [0.75–1.00]. Regarding the dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire, more than 60% of participants responded positively to the severity level of "no problem." In the comparative analysis, the low HL cohort had a statistically significantly lower utility score than that of the high HL cohort (p-value = 0.03). The multivariate analysis revealed that the HLS-14 scores were not statistically significantly correlated with the utility scores. Conclusion: Participants with low HL had lower HRQOL in the comparative analysis. However, multivariate analysis revealed that HL was not statistically significantly correlated with utility-based HRQOL scores. Optimal seatbelt practices for pregnant women with twins at different gestational ages remain uncertain. To offer recommendations for a comfortable seatbelt system, this cross-sectional observational study explored seatbelt usage and driving habits among women with twins across various pregnancy stages through an online survey that explored driving conditions and comfortable seatbelts at different stages of pregnancy. Women who drove daily before their pregnancy with twins decreased their driving frequency as the pregnancy progressed. Correct seatbelt usage was lower and no seatbelt usage was higher among pregnant women with twins than those with singleton pregnancies. They adapted their seatbelt-wearing techniques to minimise pressure on the chest in the first and third trimesters and the abdomen from the second trimester onwards. The comfortable seatbelts were those that could alleviate belt pressure, featuring waist belts to reduce pressure, wider belts to avoid localised pressure, and shoulder belts resembling a backpack type. When wearing a seatbelt, avoiding pressure on the thorax and abdomen is key for pregnant women with twins. This study suggests that the suitability of driving for pregnant women with twins in their last trimester and the reliability of seatbelts designed for such women should be further examined and validated. Objectives: Hikikomori is commonly defined as a social condition in which individuals avoid social participation and relationships beyond their family members by confining themselves to a room or their house for 6 months or longer. Hikikomori has been predominantly considered a problem among young people; however, as the population is ageing, hikikomori has also emerged as a social issue among adults. Nevertheless, no comparative studies have examined the differences in the factors associated with hikikomori among teenagers/young adults and middle-aged/older adults. Thus, this phenomenon has not been thoroughly examined, and it remains unclear whether the risk factors vary between teenagers/young adults and middle-aged/older adults. Based on the Japan Cabinet Office's definition of hikikomori, this cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence and related factors of hikikomori among the working age population (15–64 years), utilising univariate and multivariate analyses. The study also compared differences in the prevalence of and factors related to hikikomori between teenagers/young adults and middle-aged/older adults. Methods: We distributed self-administered questionnaires to individual participants and their families between 24 December 2020 and 18 January 2021. Results: Data from an anonymised sample of 3,092 individuals (split into two groups of 15–39 and 40–64 years) were subjected to analysis. The results revealed a hikikomori prevalence of 2.3% in the target population; the prevalence rate was 2.12% among individuals aged 15 to 39 years and 2.42% among those aged 40 to 64 years. The analysis demonstrated strong correlations between hikikomori and several factors, including unemployment, truancy, a history of psychiatric consultation or hospitalisation, being male and the absence of ibasho, which is defined as a place where individuals can feel peace, security, acceptance and belonging. The factors associated with hikikomori differed between teenagers/young adults and middle-aged/older adults. Few authors have investigated sport-related concussion (SRC) awareness and knowledge among athletes in Japan. Sport-related concussion research is scarce among Asian compared with North American and European cohorts. To examine previous SRC history, level of SRC knowledge, and previous exposure to SRC education among collegiate athletes in Japan by the level of contact and access to medical staff. Cross-sectional study. Single-university study in Japan. A total of 2103 athletes (48 varsity teams) were contacted to participate in an anonymous survey. Data from athletes with (1) SRC history in the past 3 months, (2) persistent SRC symptoms, (3) nontraditional sports, or (4) incomplete surveys were excluded. As a result, data from 593 athletes representing 43 varsity teams were included in this analysis. Outcome measures were level of contact (contact [CON], limited contact [LTD], noncontact [NC]), access to medical staff (MEDYES, MEDNO), SRC knowledge (maximum score of 49), previous SRC history (self-report; yes, no), and previous SRC education (self-report; yes, no). The average SRC knowledge total score was 33.4 ± 6.1 (range, 18–48). The knowledge score in CON was higher than in LTD and NC (P <.001) and in MEDYES than MEDNO (median, MEDYES = 34.0, MEDNO = 32.0; U = 27 841.5, P <.001). Sport-related concussion history was statistically different by the level of contact (= 27.95, P <.001) and by access to medical staff (= 4.5, P =.034). The presence of an SRC history and previous SRC education contributed to higher SRC knowledge, independent of the level of contact and access to medical staff (P <.001). Japanese athletes who participated in CON sports had a higher prevalence of SRC history, higher knowledge, and greater exposure to SRC education than those in LTD or NC sports. Background: Motor skills have been linked to executive functions (EFs) in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). However, the traits of other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder, remain overlooked. Therefore, this study explored the association between motor skills, occupational performance, and mental health in older kindergarten children with DCD and other NDDs. Overall, 95 participants aged 5–6 years were included in this study and divided into four groups: DCD traits (DCD-t), DCD-t + NDD traits (DCD-t + NDD-t), NDD-t-only, and typically developing children. Motor skills, EFs, and mental health were assessed using the DCD Questionnaire (DCDQ-J) and Movement Assessment Battery for Children—Second Edition, School Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (S-AMPS), and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), respectively. The DCD-t + NDD-t group exhibited a strong correlation between the S-AMPS motor skill score and the DCDQ-J fine motor skill score (r = 0.88, p < 0.001) and between the total DCDQ-J score and the SDQ Total Difficulties Score (r = −0.94, p < 0.001). Context: The incidence of low back pain (LBP) is high among high school male soft tennis players. In some sports for which the rotational component of the body is important, an association between restricted hip internal rotation of the nondominant leg and LBP has been reported; however, whether this association holds in soft tennis is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between hip internal rotation, hip external rotation, hamstring flexibility, iliopsoas flexibility, and LBP incidence. Design: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study, conducted at a sports training center. Methods: Participants comprised 113 male elite high school soft tennis players (age: 16.1 [0.7] y) from 9 elite-level teams. The main outcome measures were the hip internal and external rotation range of motion, hamstring flexibility on the straight leg raise test, and iliopsoas flexibility on the Thomas test. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the influence of main outcomes on LBP incidence in the past 1 year. Results: A total of 35 participants had LBP (LBP group); 78 participants did not have LBP (non-LBP group). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds ratio for height was 1.08 (95% confidence interval, 1.00–1.16; P =.043) and for the hip internal rotation range of motion in the nondominant leg was 0.90 (95% confidence interval, 0.85–0.95; P <.001), indicating significant associations with LBP. Background: Having no or few confidants is found to be associated with more severe mental health problems and a higher prevalence of depression in adults, but research examining this association in adolescents is scarce. Social relationships may be particularly critical during adolescence, as it is an important developmental period during which vulnerability to mental health problems increases. The present study examined the relationship between having no or few confidants and anxiety/depressive symptoms in adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional self-report survey targeting 7–12th grade students (age range: 12–18) was conducted in public junior and senior high schools in Mie and Kochi, Japan. Data from 17,829 students (49.7% boys) were analyzed. Associations between anxiety/depressive symptoms (12-item General Health Questionnaire; score range: 0–12) and the number of confidants (None, 1–3, or ≥ 4) were examined using multilevel regression analyses. The analyses were stratified by gender and school level (junior/senior high), and adjusted for experiences of being physically abused and bullied and the interactions of these experiences with the number of confidants. Results: Having no or 1–3 confidants was associated with more anxiety/depressive symptoms, compared to having ≥ 4 confidants (p < 0.001) in all stratified groups. Having no confidants was associated with more anxiety/depressive symptoms than having 1–3 confidants (p < 0.001); in senior high boys, no difference was observed between having no confidants and having 1–3 confidants. In addition, in senior high boys, victims of bullying who have confidants reported significantly less anxiety/depressive symptoms than the victims who have no confidants (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Adolescents who had no or few confidants had more anxiety/depressive symptoms. Background: The relationship between abnormalities of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and elbow symptoms in baseball players remains unclear. Purpose/Hypothesis: This study aimed to compare findings of the UCL on microscopic MRI between asymptomatic and symptomatic elbows in baseball players. We hypothesized that the MRI grade of UCL injuries would exhibit no correlation with medial elbow symptoms in baseball players. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: The study participants were skeletally mature baseball players who underwent high-resolution microscopic MRI of the medial elbow including for medical checkups. Elbows with previous surgical treatment or traumatic UCL injuries were excluded. The patients were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. The UCL appearance on microscopic MRI was categorized into 4 grades and compared between the groups. Abnormal findings in the medial elbow including bony fragments at the medial epicondyle, osteophytes or bony fragments in the sublime tubercle, and bone marrow edema (BME) in the sublime tubercle were also evaluated. Results: A total of 426 baseball players (426 elbows) with a mean age of 20 years (range, 14-41 years) were included. The asymptomatic and symptomatic groups included 158 and 268 elbows, respectively. In the asymptomatic group, based on MRI grading of the UCL, 46 (29%) elbows were rated as grade I, 64 (41%) as grade II, 40 (25%) as grade III, and 8 (5%) as grade IV. In the symptomatic group, 75 (28%) elbows were rated as grade I, 118 (44%) as grade II, 61 (23%) as grade III, and 14 (5%) as grade IV. There was no significant difference in the MRI grades between the groups (P =.9). BME in the sublime tubercle was more frequently seen in the symptomatic group than in the asymptomatic group (P <.001). Conclusion: There was no difference in MRI grades of the UCL between symptomatic and asymptomatic elbows in baseball players; approximately 30% of elbows demonstrated high-grade UCL injuries in both groups. BME in the sublime tubercle was more frequently seen in symptomatic elbows than in asymptomatic elbows. BME in the sublime tubercle was a better indicator of symptoms than was MRI grading of the UCL. Aim: This study explored the relationship between language confidence and job satisfaction, the mediating role of workplace discrimination, and the moderating role of immigration duration among foreign-born nurses in Japan. Introduction: Job satisfaction is an important factor in preventing migrant nurses' turnover intentions; however, the relationships among language confidence, immigration duration, workplace discrimination, and job satisfaction among foreign-born nurses remain unclear. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected between June and August 2022 through an online survey of nurses who were born outside of Japan but were currently working as registered nurses in Japan. PROCESS v4.0 Macro for SPSS 28.0 was applied to analyze the effect of language confidence on job satisfaction, the mediator effect of workplace discrimination (model 4), and the moderator effect of immigration duration (model 15). Results: Data from 187 participants were analyzed. The results showed that 1) foreign-born nurses' language confidence was negatively correlated with workplace discrimination and positively correlated with job satisfaction; 2) workplace discrimination played a partially mediating role between language confidence and job satisfaction; and 3) immigration duration positively moderated the relationship between language confidence and job satisfaction. Conclusion: Foreign-born nurses with stronger confidence in their proficiency in Japanese perceived less workplace discrimination and higher job satisfaction. Workplace discrimination acted as a mediator in the relationship between language confidence and job satisfaction, and this relationship was strengthened with longer migration periods. Managers and policymakers should implement policies and strategies to combat workplace discrimination and provide tailored support to improve foreign-born nurses' job satisfaction, which may contribute to their retention in Japan. Background: Maximum phonation time (MPT) is used to assess speech and other oral rehabilitation‐related issues. Various factors contribute to MPT decline in older individuals. Although the impact of physical frailty on MPT has been suggested, this has not been conclusively determined. Objective: To examine the relationship between MPT and physical frailty in community‐dwelling individuals aged ≥60 years who were independently mobile. MPT‐associated factors were investigated. Methods: This cross‐sectional study analysed the clinical data of 122 patients (age [interquartile range]: 80.0 [74.0–83.0] years) without dementia who visited a neurology department between 1 February 2021 and 31 January 2023. Investigated factors included age, sex, weight, height, body mass index, smoking history, grip strength, functional independence measure, vital capacity, oral diadochokinesis, MPT and the Japanese Cardiovascular Health Study score. Physical frailty was assessed based on the total score from five items (weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, slowness and low physical activity). The relationship between MPT and physical frailty was examined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The MPT was negatively correlated with age (r = −0.347, p <.01) and physical frailty (r = −0.681, p <.01) and positively correlated with vital capacity (r = 0.474, p <.01) and height (r = 0.248, p <.01). The hierarchical multiple regression analysis, conducted with MPT as the dependent variable, demonstrated that physical frailty (β = −.59, 95% confidence interval: −0.74 to 0.43, p <.001) had a strong influence on MPT. Conclusion: In older individuals, MPT is associated with physical frailty. When assessing MPT in clinical settings, it is advisable to perform a concurrent assessment of physical frailty. Background: Depopulated and aging areas in Japan, the proportion of older people who die at home tends to be lower than the national average. We investigated the trend regarding their preference for dying at home and associated factors among older residents living in a village. Methods: We conducted a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study in February and June 2020, targeting residents of Mitsuse Village aged ≥ 65 years. We compared two groups for each factor, residents who preferred to die at home (Group H) and the remainder (Group O). Results: In total, 223 (62%) residents responded to the survey. Participants' median age was 77 years, and 44% were men. Group H accounted for 47% of the total. Univariate analysis showed that Group H was older (p = 0.010) and included a smaller proportion who used a private vehicle (p = 0.036), compared with Group O. Multivariate analysis showed that male sex and not having a primary care physician were associated with a preference for dying at home (p = 0.031 and p = 0.041). Availability of transportation, social isolation, family economic status, or knowledge of long-term care were not independent associations with a preference for dying at home. Conclusions: To fulfill the wishes of older people who prefer to die at home in depopulated areas of Japan, establishing better home medical, nursing, or long-term care systems with improved human and financial resources is essential. Introduction: This study identifies the patient population that may benefit from interprofessional collaboration in the support of patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Method: This study involved 170 patients who received treatment in Japan's recovery rehabilitation wards in December 2019–June 2020. Participants were categorized into three groups based on their functional independence measure (FIM) scores at admission, distinguishing between complete dependence, modified dependence, and independence groups. They were classified into the group with higher collaborative practice (HCP) and the group with lower collaborative practice (LCP) based on the median value of the therapist collaborative practice scale (TCPS). The primary outcomes measured were FIM efficiency and FIM effectiveness. The main effects and interactions of the level of independence with activities of daily living (ADL) and collaboration were examined using a two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni multiple comparison tests. Results: The level of independence with ADL and collaboration had an interaction effect related to FIM effectiveness (F (2, 164) = 3.191, p = 0.044). Within the independence group, HCP and LCP differed significantly (F (1, 164) = 15.562, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Interprofessional collaboration may improve ADL in patients with high ADL independence at admission. Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are a crucial modifiable risk factor for dementia. There is increasing interest in the association between SCC and sleep disturbance; however, the effects of sleep disturbance on SCC development among community-dwelling elderly individuals in Japan remain unclear. We aimed to cross-sectionally investigate the association between SCC and sleep disturbance, with adjustment for multiple factors related to cognitive decline, among 241 community-dwelling elderly persons without cognitive impairment. The measures were SCCs (Kihon Checklist-Cognitive Function, KCL-CF), sleep disturbance (Japanese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale, AIS-J), general cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination), and depressive symptoms (five-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS-5]). The following data were collected: sex, age, educational history, whether the participants had visited a medical institution for diseases (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart disease), and the presence/absence of established risk factors (hearing loss, history of head injury, drinking habits, smoking habits, social isolation, and physical inactivity and activity). Based on the KCL-CF, 96 and 145 participants were considered to have and lack SCCs, respectively. On logistic regression analysis, the AIS-J score and smoking history were significantly associated with SCCs. Our findings suggest that sleep disturbance is associated with SCC development among community-dwelling elderly people in Japan. Body mass index (BMI) is routinely used to ascertain health status, including activities of daily living (ADLs); however, the associations of ADLs with height and weight in older adults have not been elucidated. Therefore, we cross-sectionally investigated the correlations between ADLs and height, weight, and BMI in 155 participants aged 82 to 103 years and characterized the naïve Bayesian prediction for ADLs. Activities of daily living showed a significant negative correlation with height and weight and a positive correlation with age. In males, a shorter height was associated with an increased risk of falling and disability in phone calling independently, and losing weight was associated with an increased risk of disability in going out. Combining age, weight, and height improved the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve in the prediction of disability in going out and phone calling independently in males. In the lives of those who are the target of community health nursing, it is important to collaborate with individuals and communities to improve their quality of life. Herein, we aimed to determine the association between Internet use among older individuals and locomotive syndrome (LS), frailty, and sarcopenia. In this cross-sectional study conducted between July 2022 and March 2023, we recruited 105 community-dwelling older Japanese adults who participated in a care prevention project called "Kayoi-no-ba". All participants were divided into Internet and non-Internet user groups according to the classification of a previous study. We assessed LS (standing test, two-step test, and five-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale), frailty (through the Questionnaire for Medical Checkup of Old-Old), and sarcopenia (grip strength, normal walking speed, and skeletal muscle mass index) and made group comparisons between Internet users and non-users. Binomial logistic regression analyses were performed with Internet use as the independent variable and sarcopenia or LS as the dependent variables. The Internet and non-Internet user groups had 69 and 36 participants, respectively. The Internet user group comprised 65.7% of all participants, which was similar to that reported in a previous study of the same age group. Between-group comparisons showed significant differences in sarcopenia and LS items, whereas adjusted binomial logistic analysis showed a significant association between sarcopenia and Internet use. In summary, among LS, frailty, and sarcopenia, sarcopenia showed the highest association with Internet use. Older adults without sarcopenia having good physical functions, such as grip strength, walking speed, and skeletal muscle index, more likely used the Internet; while older adults with sarcopenia were less likely to use the Internet. Simple Summary: We investigated financial toxicity in Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma using the COST tool. Despite universal coverage, patients in Japan had similar levels of financial toxicity as in other countries. There was a positive correlation between the FACT-G total score and the COST score. Age < 65 years and not having private health insurance were associated with higher financial toxicity. Information on the financial toxicity experienced by Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) is lacking, even though Japan has its own unique public health insurance system. Thus, a web-based survey was conducted to evaluate the financial toxicity experienced by Japanese mRCC patients using the COmprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST) tool. This study enrolled Japanese patients who underwent, or were undergoing, systemic therapy for mRCC. The outcomes evaluated were the distribution of COST scores, the correlation between COST and quality of life (QOL) assessed by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) scale, and demographic factors associated with financial toxicity. The median (range) COST score was 19.0 (3.0–36.0). The Pearson correlation coefficient for COST and FACT-G total scores was 0.40. Univariate analysis revealed that not having private health insurance and lower household income per year were significantly associated with lower COST scores. Multivariate analyses showed that age < 65 years and not having private health insurance were significantly associated with lower COST scores. This study revealed that Japanese mRCC patients experience adverse financial impacts even under the universal health insurance coverage system available in Japan, and financial toxicity negatively affects their QOL. Objectives. Cognitive functions in almost all domains are lower in patients with schizophrenia than those in healthy controls, with the severity of impairment differing between domains. Treatments are being developed to improve cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia. However, the pattern of cognitive impairment must be clarified to facilitate treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to classify the patterns of cognitive impairment in individuals and provide treatment suggestions. Methods. Patients with schizophrenia were recruited from two psychiatric hospitals in Japan. Demographic and psychopathological symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale for Schizophrenia and neurocognitive functions, using the CogHealth battery. The following domains were assessed: processing speed, visual attention, working memory, visual learning, and spatial attention. The scores were standardised and assigned as the same-aged average score. Hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward's method was performed based on CogHealth scores. Subsequently, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparisons were performed to compare the variables in each cluster. Results. In total, 133 participants were classified into four clusters: Cluster 1 (n = 16), with severe cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms and the longest stay; Cluster 2 (n = 44), with moderate cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms; Cluster 3 (n = 42), with preserved cognitive function, except for spatial perception, and mild psychiatric symptoms; and Cluster 4 (n = 31), with only memory and spatial perception impairment and mild psychiatric symptoms. Implications. The clusters indicate that impairment may occur in all or selective domains. Selective domain impairments may be in spatial perception or in spatial perception and memory. This study utilized the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule version 2 (WHODAS 2.0) to identify vulnerable students and explore the impact of mental and developmental disorders on disability. A total of 156 undergraduates who visited support service offices at large-scale universities in Japan between April 2018 and March 2020 were included. The 36-item WHODAS 2.0 was administered, and data were gathered regarding mental and developmental disabilities. Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests were conducted. Parents/guardians typically initiated consultation with student support services. Students whose parents had initiated consultation did not have higher scores in any WHODAS domain except "Life Activities." In every WHODAS domain except "Cognition," the "Mental Disorder" group scored significantly higher than the "No Disorder" group. Objectives We evaluated the association between anti-ribosomal P antibody (anti-RibP) titres and disease activity in Japanese SLE patients. Methods Eighty patients admitted and treated in Niigata University Hospital for new-onset or flare-up of SLE were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Clinical data were obtained from medical records at admission. The anti-RibP index, and cytokine and tryptophan metabolite levels were determined by ELISA. Results Of the 80 SLE patients, 30 had anti-RibP. Anti-RibP presence was associated with a greater prevalence of skin rash and more severe inflammatory responses, demonstrated by higher inflammatory cytokine levels, hypocomplementemia, and accelerated tryptophan metabolism, in younger patients. The serum anti-RibP index was correlated with age at diagnosis, clinical indicators, initial prednisolone dose, and cytokines and tryptophan metabolite levels in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that the anti-RibP index was independently associated with the initial prednisolone dose and the prevalence of skin rash. The anti-RibP IgGs were mainly the IgG2 and IgG3 subclasses, and anti-RibP IgG3 was associated with hypocomplementemia, higher DAS, accelerated kynurenine pathway activity, and higher proinflammatory cytokine production. The coexistence of anti-dsDNA IgG and anti-RibP IgG2 or IgG3 accompanied higher IL-10 and IFN-α2 levels; furthermore, anti-RibP IgG3 coexistence with anti-dsDNA antibody contributed to the requirement for higher initial prednisolone doses and accelerated kynurenine pathway activity. Conclusion Anti-RibP was associated with clinical manifestations and parameters in SLE, and its index might be a useful indicator of disease severity. Aim: To explore the prevalence of social isolation among Japanese community‐dwelling older adults before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic as well as determine how family and friend connections before and during the pandemic affected frail older adults during the pandemic. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: A total of 852 community‐dwelling older adults in Hokkaido and Tokyo, Japan were surveyed conducted between April and November 2021 using convenience sampling. The Lubben social network scale‐6, frailty screening index, and geriatric depression scale were used to assess social isolation, frailty and depression, respectively. A path analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of social isolation on frailty. Results: Participants had a mean age of 76.8 ± 6.6 years. Overall, 46% and 59% of participants were socially isolated before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic, respectively. Frailty was found in 19% of participants during the pandemic. Friends and family connectedness before the pandemic had no direct relationship with frailty; only friend connectedness affected frailty indirectly via depression. Family connectedness during the pandemic had a significant, negative and direct relationship with frailty. Conclusion: The findings show that connectedness with family and friends is critical for older people's physical and mental health. Impact: Nurses in the community should consider these findings to reduce mental health problems and physical decline among older adults. Purpose: Providing support for older adults after spousal bereavement is crucial for psychological recovery through the grieving process and for promoting a healthy and happy remainder of life. The current study aimed to understand factors influencing well-being among Japanese community-dwelling older adults who experienced spousal bereavement by evaluating how their roles and activities affected their psychological well-being following the loss. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire survey of 332 older adults who had experienced death of a spouse in later adulthood. Results: Identified factors that affected well-being after spousal loss were sex, ability to go out without assistance from others, long duration since spousal loss, having a hobby, and adopting a life-oriented approach to cope with bereavement. Well-being following spousal loss was influenced by participants' activities and roles. Conclusion: Findings of the current study provide potentially valuable suggestions for surviving spouses and their supporters when coping with grief following spousal loss. Aim: Grip strength (GS) as a surrogate for muscular strength, waist circumference (WC) as a surrogate marker of visceral fat, and body mass index (BMI) as a surrogate marker of obesity should also be considered markers for the management of risks associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, in terms of the management of T2DM in elderly patients, the accentuated heterogeneity of sarcopenic change might modify the associations between those factors and glycemic control. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to clarify the impact of GS, WC, and BMI on hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in elderly Japanese patients with T2DM. Methods: GS, WC, and BMI were measured in 327 patients. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for good glycemic control (HbA1c < 7.0%) were investigated to analyze the three variables as numerical values by dividing them into tertiles. All results were expressed after adjustment was made for the confounders of age, sex, and number of diabetes medications being used by the study participants. Results: The ORs of GS, WC, and BMI for well-controlled HbA1c were 1.056 (95% CI, 1.016-1.098), 0.986 (95% CI, 0.960-1.013), and 1.032 (95% CI, 0.959-1.111), respectively. The OR of 3.726 (95% CI, 1.831-7.581) in the high tertile for GS was significantly higher than the OR in the low tertile, and no differences were observed among the tertiles for WC and BMI. Objectives: This study explored collaboration models between primary care physicians (PCPs) and care managers (CMs) and assessed each model's potential in meeting the support needs of individuals with early-stage dementia. Methods: In 2022, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among the PCPs in Tokyo. The data regarding the participant and clinic characteristics and daily practices for individuals with early-stage dementia were collected. The clinical collaborative practice was classified using a latent class analysis; comparisons were made between the identified classes based on 14 items in seven domains of support. Results: Two collaborative and one stand-alone models were identified. The former varied in the professionals' roles, with one led by PCPs and the other by CMs. We named them PCP-led, CM-led, and stand-alone models, accounting for 46.4%, 32.8%, and 20.6% of the clinics, respectively. The PCP-led clinics were significantly more likely to provide support than the stand-alone ones across five domains: cognitive function, care planning, carers' support, information, and social health. The CM-led model clinics generally fell between those of the other two models. Conclusion: Different leadership styles exist in the PCP-CM collaborations in care delivery for people with early-stage dementia. Aim: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between depressive symptoms and infection prevention measures and daily lifestyle habits during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic among community‐dwelling Japanese older adults. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted on older residents (age ≥65 years) living in the Tama area of Tokyo and Sapporo, Hokkaido, in 2021. A self‐administered questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data on demographics, the impact of the pandemic on physical condition, and depressive symptoms, infection prevention measures, and daily lifestyle habits during the pandemic. The Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms. Results: In total, 554 respondents were included in the analysis. The results of multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that refraining from going out and visiting medical institutions were associated with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, those who went out almost every day were less likely to have depressive symptoms than the others, those who exercised almost every day were less likely to have depressive symptoms than were those who almost never exercised, and those who slept 6–7 h were less likely to have depressive symptoms than were those who slept ≤5 h. Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest the necessity of having a place where older adults with physical and lifestyle concerns can consult with healthcare providers in a location other than a medical institution, even during infectious disease outbreaks. Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential for pharmacists to select and recommend over-the-counter (OTC) drugs in medical consultations (hereinafter referred to as OTC counseling). Objectives: This study examined the association between pharmacists' perceptions of EBPs and their implementation of OTC counseling. Methods: A web-based survey was conducted. Questions regarding pharmacists' perceptions of EBP and experience in OTC counseling were set, and respondents were asked to respond based on a 5-point scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The association between pharmacists' perceptions of EBP and experience in OTC counseling was examined by calculating Spearman's ρ using bivariate correlation analysis. Results: Responses were obtained from 250 pharmacists. Although 70% of respondents indicated that EBP improves service quality, only 39, 31, and 14% had knowledge of the EBP steps, conducted a literature search, and performed a critical appraisal, respectively. Regarding OTC counseling experience, only 31% of respondents indicated that "sufficient evidence information on OTC drugs has been obtained." Over 60% of respondents expressed the need for OTC usage guidelines and support tools and revealed that brand-specific purchases of OTC drugs make EBP difficult. An association was observed between pharmacists' perceptions of EBP and experience in OTC counseling. "Level of recognition of steps for practicing evidence-based medicine" was associated with the "need fulfillment level for evidence information" (ρ = 0.329, P < 0.001), "brand-specific purchases of OTC drugs" (ρ = 0.240, P < 0.001), "perception of product advertisement" (ρ = 0.227, P < 0.001), and "need for OTC guidelines" (ρ = 0.208, P < 0.001). Japan has accepted nurses from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam under the Economic Partnership Agreement, but nearly half of them have already left the workforce. This study aimed to clarify the factors related to the job continuance of nurses who migrated to Japan under the Economic Partnership Agreement. Our goal was to explore factors specific to migrant nurses and to contribute to the development of support measures for them. This research was a cross-sectional study in which a web-based questionnaire and interview were conducted at a single point in time. Migrant nurses (n = 40) participated in the web-based questionnaire survey. Of those, nine nurses were also interviewed. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to establish correlations, and qualitative descriptive analysis was used to analyse interviews. The questionnaire survey results revealed the content of work, human relationships in the workplace, the number of night shifts, and satisfaction with the balance between work and private life were significantly and negatively correlated with the Intention to Quit scale total score. All correlation coefficients were less than 0.5, indicating weak correlations. Three categories emerged from the interviews as positive factors related to job continuance: "generous support from the workplace", "beneficial nursing experience in Japan", and "determination to live in Japan". A good working environment, generous support from the supervisor and colleagues, high values of nursing in Japan, and desire to migrate to Japan were the factors that had a positive effect on migrant nurses' job continuance in Japan. Background: This study aimed to: (1) identify assessment methods that can detect greater ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DROM) limitation in the injured limb; (2) determine whether differences in weightbearing measurements exist even in the absence of DROM limitations in the injured limb according to non-weightbearing measurements; and (3) examine associations between DROM in the weightbearing and non-weightbearing positions and compare those between a patient group with foot and ankle injuries and a healthy group. Methods: Eighty-two patients with foot and ankle injuries (e.g., fractures, ligament and tendon injuries) and 49 healthy individuals participated in this study. Non-weightbearing DROM was measured under two different conditions: prone position with knee extended and prone position with knee flexed. Weightbearing DROM was measured as the tibia inclination angle (weightbearing angle) and distance between the big toe and wall (weightbearing distance) at maximum dorsiflexion. The effects of side (injured, uninjured) and measurement method on DROM in the patient groups were assessed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA and t-tests. Pearson correlations between measurements were assessed. In addition, we analyzed whether patients without non-weightbearing DROM limitation (≤ 3 degrees) showed limitations in weightbearing DROM using t-tests with Bonferroni correction. Results: DROM in patient groups differed significantly between legs with all measurement methods (all: P < 0.001), with the largest effect size for weightbearing angle (d = 0.95). Patients without non-weightbearing DROM limitation (n = 37) displayed significantly smaller weightbearing angle and weightbearing distance on the injured side than on the uninjured side (P < 0.001 each), with large effect sizes (d = 0.97–1.06). Correlation coefficients between DROM in non-weightbearing and weightbearing positions were very weak (R = 0.17, P = 0.123) to moderate (R = 0.26–0.49, P < 0.05) for the patient group, and moderate to strong for the healthy group (R = 0.51–0.69, P < 0.05). Conclusions: DROM limitations due to foot and ankle injuries may be overlooked if measurements are only taken in the non-weightbearing position and should also be measured in the weightbearing position. Furthermore, DROM measurements in non-weightbearing and weightbearing positions may assess different characteristics, particularly in patient group. Background: Differences in the physical characteristics of bilateral and unilateral lumbar bone stress injuries (BSIs) are unknown. Purpose: To compare bilateral and unilateral lumbar BSIs in adolescent male soccer players, with a focus on lumbopelvic alignment. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 78 players (age range, 12-15 years) from a local soccer club who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluations were included in the study. Lumbopelvic alignment and lumbar BSI were evaluated using short-tau inversion recovery and 3-dimensional LAVA on 3-T MRI; lumbar BSI was defined as the presence of bone marrow edema and/or the complete and incomplete fracture in the pars region on the MRI. Pelvic tilt (PT) and pelvic outflare angles were assessed on the kicking and pivoting sides, and asymmetry for each parameter was calculated by subtracting the kicking side from the pivoting side. In addition, the lumbar lordosis (LL), sacral slope (SS), and SS relative to LL (calculated by subtracting LL from the SS) were assessed. One-way analysis of variance was performed to compare lumbopelvic alignment in players with bilateral BSI, unilateral BSI, or no abnormal findings (controls). Results: No significant differences were found regarding lumbopelvic alignment between the players with bilateral versus unilateral lumbar BSI. PT asymmetry was significantly greater in both players with bilateral lumbar BSI and unilateral lumbar BSI compared with controls (P =.018 and P =.016, respectively). In addition, SS relative to LL was significantly greater in players with bilateral lumbar BSI compared with controls (P <.001). Conclusion: Although there were no significant lumbopelvic alignment differences between bilateral and unilateral BSI, players with bilateral BSI exhibited increased sacral anterior tilt relative to the LL, and the pelvis was more posterior on the pivoting side than on the kicking side in both players with bilateral BSI and unilateral BSI. Our results suggest that lumbopelvic alignment assessment may contribute to the management strategy for players with lumbar BSI and to the identification of players at high risk of lumbar BSI. The physical function of older patients with heart failure (HF) is likely to decline, and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is widely used for its evaluation. No study has analyzed the SPPB by using Rasch model in these patients. The aim of this study was to examine the structural validity and item response of the SPPB in older inpatients with HF. In this multicenter cross-sectional study, we investigated 106 older inpatients with HF. We evaluated the SPPB's rating scale structure, unidimensionality, and measurement accuracy (0 = poor performance to 4 = normal performance). The SPPB rating scale fulfilled the category functioning criteria. All items fit the underlying scale construct. The SPPB demonstrated adequate reliability (person reliability = 0.81) and separated persons into four strata: those with very low, low, moderate, and high physical performance. Item-difficulty measures were −0.59 to 0.96 logits, and regarding the person ability-item difficulty matching for the SPPB, the item was somewhat easy (the mean of person ability = 0.89 logits; mean of item difficulty = 0.00). The SPPB has strong measurement properties and is an appropriate scale for quantitatively evaluating physical function in older patients with HF. For older adults with heart failure (HF), the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is often used to measure physical performance. Rasch analysis revealed that SPPB had strong measurement properties in older adults with HF. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the association between phase angle (PhA) and physical activity intensity in community-dwelling older Japanese adults. The intensity and time of physical activity for predicting high PhA were also examined. This study involved 67 community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 78.3 ± 5.5; female: 83.6%). We measured the physical activity and body composition of the participants. Physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer, and light-intensity physical activity (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) hours per day were calculated from the results. Body composition was measured using Inbody S10, and the PhA was calculated from the measurements of the right side of the body. Bayesian statistical modeling revealed an association between PhA and MVPA (β = 0.256; p = 0.022; 95% Bayesian confidence interval [CI] = 0.001, 0.012), but not LPA (β = −0.113; p = 0.341; 95% Bayesian CI = −0.002, 0.001), even after adjustment for confounders. The cutoff value of MVPA predicting high PhA, calculated by the receiver operator characteristic curve, was 19.7 min/d (sensitivity = 0.906; specificity = 0.429). Aim: The gut microbiota has emerged as a new intervention target for sarcopenia. Prior studies in humans have focused on the association between gut microbiota and skeletal muscle quantity, while the evidence on muscle function and quality is lacking. This study aimed to identify gut microbiota genera associated with skeletal muscle function, quantity, and quality in a general population of Japanese adults. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included 164 participants aged 35–80 years, women and men recruited from urban areas of Japan. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Skeletal muscle function was measured using handgrip strength and leg extension power (LEP), while skeletal muscle mass was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Phase angle was used as a measure of skeletal muscle quality. Multivariate linear regression analysis stratified by age group was used to examine the association between the dominant genera of the gut microbiota and skeletal muscle variables. Results: A significant association was found between Bacteroides and Prevotella 9 with LEP only in the ≥60 years group. When both Bacteroides and Prevotella 9 were included in the same regression model, only Bacteroides remained consistently and significantly associated with LEP. No significant associations were observed between skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, and phase angle and major gut microbiota genera. Conclusions: In this study, we observed a significant positive association between Bacteroides and leg muscle function in older adults. Aim: To clarify the state of screening and support systems for socially high‐risk pregnant women at obstetric facilities across Japan and identify the characteristics of facilities related to the implementation of screening. Methods: This cross‐sectional study used a self‐administered questionnaire. Participants were managers of hospitals, clinics, and midwifery birth centers handling deliveries in 47 prefectures across Japan. The questionnaire comprised items regarding the characteristics of participants and their facilities, service provision related to socially high‐risk women available at the facility, the number of specified pregnant women (tokutei ninpu) per year, methods of screening, and support systems within the obstetric facilities. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed using IBM‐SPSS version 24 for the association between facility characteristics and screening practices for socially high‐risk pregnant women. Results: Valid responses were received from 716 of 2512 obstetric facilities. Rates of specified expectant mothers per annual number of deliveries were identified as follows: perinatal medical centers (2.7%), general hospitals (1.6%), obstetrics and gynecology hospitals (1.0%), and clinics (0.8%). A total of 426 facilities (60.6%) reported screening all expectant mothers to identify socially high‐risk pregnant women. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that facility characteristics and service/care provision related to screening practices included availability of in‐hospital midwife‐led care and in‐hospital midwifery clinics (adjusted odds ratio 1.61; 95% CI [1.30, 1.47]), one‐on‐one care by midwife (1.73; 95% CI [1.15, 2.59]), multidisciplinary meetings within the facility (1.70; 95% CI [1.14, 2.56]), follow‐up support systems after discharge (1.90; 95% CI [1.17, 3.09]), and participation in the regional council for children in need of protection (2.33; 95% CI [1.13, 4.81]). Conclusions: Approximately 60% of surveyed obstetric facilities screen for socially high‐risk women. Increasing service provision at facilities may be necessary to implement screening. Aim: Shift management and planning processes for shift‐working nurses are important for their continued work. This study aimed to determine the association between shift assignments, organizational justice, and their interaction with turnover intention among shift‐work nurses. Methods: This cross‐sectional study used an online questionnaire administered to Japanese nurses between January and February 2020. Enquiries pertaining to their daily start and end times for each shift type, the shift assignments, organizational justice, and their turnover intention were made. To examine the association with turnover intention, logistic regression analysis was performed with shift assignments, organizational justice, and their interaction terms as independent variables. Results: A total of 386 nurses participated in the final analysis. Of these, 161 nurses (41.7%) had turnover intention. Unequal work assignments and procedural justice were significantly associated with turnover intention. However, the interaction between these factors was not significant. Conclusion: The results suggest that procedural justice in the workplace and turnover intention are related, but in shift planning, even procedural justice cannot buffer unequal work from leading to turnover intention. Aim: The lifestyle habits of young people are often associated with that of middle-aged and older adults, and intervention from a young age is important for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. Hypertension is a lifestyle-related disease, and an increasing number of patients are suffering from it. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the factors that cause fluctuations in blood pressure in university students. Subject and methods: The survey was conducted from 2011 to 2019 and included 14,720 male and 6,039 female university students. The questionnaire included items such as age, sex, weight control orientation, and lifestyle habits. Height, weight, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured. Body mass indices (BMI) were calculated, and the participants were classified as underweight, normal body type, or obese. In addition, abnormal blood pressure (ABP) was defined as systolic/diastolic blood pressure above 120 and/or 80 mmHg. Results: A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that ABP was significantly associated with snacking (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval 0.68, 0.52–0.90) in males with underweight; sleep duration ≥ 6 h (1.10, 1.02–1.19), snacking (0.84, 0.75–0.96), and weight decreasing orientation (1.22, 1.12–1.32) in males with normal body types; exercise habits (0.75, 0.56–1.00) in females with normal body types. Conclusion: The present study revealed different risk factors by body type associated with ABP in Japanese university students. In particular, weight loss orientation in a standard-bodied male may be a risk factor for ABP. Our study suggests that interventions by body type may prevent lifestyle-related diseases. Purpose Many Japanese women continue to work during pregnancy, but half of them quit work. Several symptoms and discomfort during pregnancy are known to interfere with daily life and to be a reason for taking sick leaves or retiring during pregnancy. However, little is known about the factors behind their motivation to continue working throughout pregnancy. Work engagement is a concept defined as "a positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption of workers", and can predict positive work outcomes, such as job performance, job satisfaction and motivation. This study has two hypotheses: (1) job resources would be positively associated with work engagement, and (2) the perceived symptoms during pregnancy would be negatively associated with work engage- ment. Then, this study aimed to explore the factors associated with work engagement among Japanese pregnant women. Methods Between July and November 2019, a cross-sectional study was conducted at two general hospitals in the urban area of Tokyo. Pregnant women were recruited during antenatal health check-ups and asked to answer self-ad- ministered questionnaires after obtaining written informed consent. The eligibility criteria were having a single preg- nancy, being at ≥16 weeks of gestation, and being able to read and write Japanese. The outcome variable was work engagement using the 3-item version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Furthermore, work-related variables, such as job demands and job resources, perceived physical and mental symptoms, and demographic characteristics were obtained. To examine the relationships between the independent variables and work engagement, a bivariate analysis was conducted. Then, multivariate regression analysis was performed on the variables that were significantly associated with work engagement in the bivariate analysis. Results Of 252 participants at ≥16 weeks' gestation who agreed to participate, 226 completed the questionnaires. After excluding 86 women who were not working at the time of recruitment, the data of 140 working pregnant women were included in the analyses. Participants' age (mean ± standard deviation) was 33.1 ± 4.3 years, and the mean score of work engagement was 3.6 ± 1.3. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that the factors associated with a higher level of work engagement were higher supervisor support (β = 0.259, p = 0.008), higher job demands (β = 0.267, p = 0.006), higher sense of coherence (β = 0.276, p = 0.001), and higher age (β = 0.188, p = 0.024). As for the hypotheses, this study revealed that (1) job resources were positively associated with work engagement, and (2) the perceived symptoms during pregnancy were not associated with work engagement. Conclusion Higher supervisor support was significantly associated with a higher level of work engagement. This study assessed the risk perceptions among disaster relief nurses (DRNs) in Japan by focusing on 15 risk factors associated with frequent natural disasters and the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional study that targeted DRNs across six prefectures in Japan and explored nurses' perceptions of risks including radiation exposure, volcanic eruptions, and mass infections. The findings indicated a heightened perception of radiation and nuclear-related risks. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, DRNs perceived "mass infection" as a significant risk. An age-based analysis revealed that younger nurses had more dread about "mass infection" and had heightened uncertainty about the "X-ray test" compared with their older peers. Understanding DRNs' risk perceptions is crucial for effective disaster response preparedness and training. The study highlights the need to address these perceptions to ensure that DRNs are well prepared and supported in their roles. This study was not pre-registered on a publicly accessible registry. Introduction: While there may be differences in the choice of suicide methods between attempters with and those without a history of psychiatric disorders, it is not clear whether these differences predict the actual degree of physical injury. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the history of psychiatric disorder and the degree of physical injury among suicide attempters in a Japanese rural area. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing secondary data of 806 suicide attempters from April 2012 to March 2022 obtained from a Japanese rural city. The exposure variable was a history of psychiatric disorders. The primary outcome was the degree of physical injury of suicide attempters: moderate and severe. We conducted a multivariate Poisson regression analysis to estimate the prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Among 806 suicide attempters, a significant negative association between the history of psychiatric disorder and the degree of physical injury was observed (PR = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.28-0.59). Those with and without psychiatric disorders were more likely to choose low- and severe-lethality suicide methods such as drug or psychotropic overdoses and hanging or deep wrist injuries, respectively (P <.001). Conclusions: The present study highlights the importance of considering suicide attempters, both with and without psychiatric disorders, while formulating targeted suicide prevention strategies. This study investigated the characteristics of physical activity according to sit-to-stand, standing, and stand-to-sit abilities in subacute stroke with walking difficulty. In this study, 29 participants with subacute stroke and walking difficulty were enrolled and classified into two groups: participants who successfully completed three items (i.e., sit-to-stand, standing, and stand-to-sit) of the Functional Balance Scale (independent group, n = 13) and those who showed incomplete scores on any of the three items (dependent group, n = 16). Light-intensity physical activity (LIPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured using an accelerometer at three periods (i.e. daytime, therapy time, and non-therapy time) for a week. Two-way analysis of variance (groups × physical activity intensity) demonstrated a significant interaction in each period. Post-hoc tests showed significantly more LIPAs and MVPAs in the independent group in all periods, except for MVPA in the non-therapy time. Particularly, LIPA showed significant between-group differences in each period. Among individuals with subacute stroke and walking difficulty, those who could completely perform sit-to-stand, standing, and stand-to-sit could perform more LIPAs. Context: Each hamstring muscle is subdivided into several regions by multiple motor nerve branches, which implies each region has different muscle activation properties. However, little is known about the muscle activation of each region with a change in the knee joint angle. Understanding of regional activation of the hamstrings could be helpful for designing rehabilitation and training programs targeted at strengthening a specific region. Objective: To investigate the effect of knee joint angle on the activity level of several regions within the individual hamstring muscles during isometric knee-flexion exercise with maximal effort (MVCKF). Design: Within-subjects repeated measures. Setting: University laboratory. Participants: Sixteen young males with previous participation in sports competition and resistance training experience. Intervention: The participants performed 2 MVCKF trials at each knee joint angle of 30°, 60°, and 90°. Outcome Measures: Surface electromyography was used to measure muscle activity in the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semitendinosus, and semimembranosus of hamstrings at 30°, 60°, and 90° of knee flexion during MVCKF. Results: Muscle activity levels in the proximal and middle regions of the BFlh were higher at 30° and 60° of knee flexion than at 90° during MVCKF (all: P <.05). Meanwhile, the activity levels in the distal region of the BFlh were not different among all of the evaluated knee joint angles. In semitendinosus and semimembranosus, the activity levels were higher at 30° and 60° than at 90°, regardless of region (all: P <.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the effect of knee joint angle on muscle activity level differs between regions of the BFlh, whereas that is similar among regions of semitendinosus and semimembranosus during MVCKF. Aims. To examine the association between job satisfaction and the intention to leave and explore the factors associated with job satisfaction or the intention to leave among foreign-educated nurses in Japan. Design. A cross-sectional design was used, and data were collected through an online survey of nurses who were born and received their basic nursing education outside of Japan but are currently working as registered nurses in Japan. Data were analyzed across two phases: the first explored the related factors with intention to leave and job satisfaction using bivariate analysis and regression through IBM SPSS; the second examined the theoretical framework model using a structural equation model through IBM Amos. Results. Data from 180 participants (effective response rate: 87.4%) were analyzed. Overall, foreign-educated nurses reported moderate job satisfaction level in Japan. The final model showed good fit indices, indicating that higher workplace discrimination, lower Japanese language satisfaction, and not receiving orientation were predictors of foreign-educated nurses' lower job satisfaction. Lower job satisfaction, fewer years of nursing practice in Japan, single status, and higher language satisfaction predicted a higher intention to leave. Conclusion. This study provides incremental evidence of a negative relationship between job satisfaction and intention to leave among foreign-educated nurses in Japan. Workplace discrimination was the main predictor of nurses' job dissatisfaction and indirectly correlated with their intention to leave, as mediated by job satisfaction. Implications. Our study suggests that managers should provide a supportive and equal work environment, including implementing policies to reduce workplace discrimination and providing adequate support programs to enhance foreign-educated nurses' job satisfaction and reduce their turnover intention. Background. Strategic leadership is key to implementing evidence-based practice (EBP). Evaluating the readiness and processes necessary to implement EBP using the Japanese version of the implementation leadership scale (ILS) may be useful to systematically promote the implementation of EBP in Japan. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the ILS for nurse managers and staff nurses. Methods. Data were collected in a cross-sectional study. The original ILS was translated into Japanese and back-translated into English. Clinical nurses reviewed it and confirmed its face validity. We distributed a web questionnaire to 119 nurse managers and 2,858 staff nurses working at three university hospitals in Japan's metropolitan areas. Construct validity was assessed for nursing managers and staff nurses, respectively, using confirmatory factor analysis. Known-group validity for nurse managers was assessed by verifying differences in ILS scores by educational background and experience of learning EBP and working on EBP. We evaluated reliability using Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability. Results. The response rates for nurse managers and staff nurses were 56.3% and 16.9%, respectively. Data from 67 nursing managers and 484 staff nurses were analyzed, excluding duplicate responses. Confirmatory factor analyses of both samples supported the four-factor structure of ILS. The ILS total score of nurse managers with experience learning EBP or experience working on EBP was statistically significantly higher than that of those with no experience, and known-group validity was supported. Across both samples, internal consistency reliability was strong (Cronbach's alpha: 0.91–0.97) and test-retest reliability was moderate. Conclusion. This study illustrated the reliability and validity of Japanese versions of the ILS for both nurse managers and staff nurses. This study enabled international comparisons of the leadership required for EBP implementation and may support the development of intervention programs and strategies to promote EBP's implementation in different countries. Aim: To assess the validity of self-reported articulatory oral motor skill against objectively measured repetitive articulatory rate (oral diadochokinesis [oral-DDK]) as a gold standard index for articulatory oral motor skill in community-dwelling older Japanese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 607 Japanese adults (mean age = 73.9 years). A single-item self-report questionnaire for articulatory oral motor skill was developed. Study participants completed a 1-month-interval test-retest protocol to assess reliability of the questionnaire, and the protocol was tested by the kappa statistic. Oral-DDK with/ta/(i.e., the number of repetitions of the monosyllable/ta/per second) was measured during the on-site examination. Low oral-DDK performance was defined as <5.2 times/s in men and <5.4 times/s in women. Oral-DDK performance, oral functions other than articulatory oral motor skill, and physical frailty were compared in the groups with and without self-reported low articulatory oral motor skill as determined by the response to the questionnaire. Results: Self-reported low articulatory oral motor skill was identified in 18.5% of the study population. The self-report questionnaire had good test-retest reliability, with a kappa statistic of 0.71. Self-reported low articulatory oral motor skill was significantly associated with a lower value of oral-DDK with/ta/and a higher proportion of low oral-DDK performance, difficulties in chewing and swallowing, dry mouth, and physical frailty. Self-report had high specificity (83.1%) but low sensitivity (42.1%) for detecting low oral-DDK performance. Conclusions: A single-item self-report questionnaire for articulatory oral motor skill had acceptable test-retest reliability and was associated with objectively measured articulatory oral motor skill. Aim: This study investigated the effects of differences in oral function and depressive tendencies on nutritional status in older adults requiring support or low-level care. Methods: In 106 older adult participants residing in nursing/care homes or participating in community-level preventive care activities, the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA®-SF) for nutritional status and oral diadochokinesis (ODK), tongue pressure, and repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST) for oral function, 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Diet-Related Quality of Life Scale-Short Form (DRQOL-SF), and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) were administered. Basic information, including cognitive function, was evaluated. Hierarchical MNA (dependent variable)-based multiple regression analysis was performed, followed by path analysis using factors with significant associations with MNA scores. Results: RSST, ODK, tongue pressure, FIM, and DRQOL were positively correlated with MNA scores and GDS was negatively correlated. Hierarchical multiple regression demonstrated associations with tongue pressure, GDS, FIM, DRQOL scores, and gender. Path analysis confirmed significant paths from tongue pressure to MNA, tongue pressure to FIM, and FIM to MNA (P < .001). Significant paths were confirmed from GDS to MNA (P < .01), from DRQOL to MNA (P < .05), and from gender to MNA (P < .01). Conclusions: Tongue pressure, GDS, FIM, DRQOL scores, and gender were identified as factors that directly affect MNA. Tongue pressure showed the greatest effect and indirectly affected MNA via FIM. These findings emphasize the importance of early detection of low nutritional risk for preventing depression and oral function deterioration, and of evaluation of dietary satisfaction and improvement of quality of life in diets. Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are popular among women, and are used during their pregnancy in Japan. This study aimed to survey the prevalence of CAM use by healthy pregnant women as a health-care prescribed therapy or self-care and to investigate the factors associated with CAM use in Japan. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, pregnant women after 34 weeks of gestation were asked to respond to a questionnaire at the clinic or online. The questionnaire comprised questions on the participants' characteristics and their use of CAM for therapy and self-care. Descriptive statistics were calculated in the analyses, and bivariate and multivariate logistic analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between factors and CAM use. Results: A total of 394 women responded from three hospitals, two clinics, and two midwifery birth centers. CAM was received as treatment by practitioners during pregnancy by 75 women (19.0%). The following therapies were used: traditional Chinese medicine (7.9%), chiropractic (6.9%), moxibustion (6.4%), and acupuncture (5.3%). One or more types of therapy were used as self-care by 348 women (88.3%). Highly used CAM for self-care were: folic acid supplementation (75.4%), other supplements (51.5%), herbs (20.8%), and yoga (19.0%). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that the factors associated with CAM use as a therapy were midwifery birth centers for planned childbirth settings (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 3.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.69–7.83]) and pregnancy complications diagnosed (AOR 2.46, 95%CI [1.38–4.39]). The factors associated with CAM use for self-care were age 30–39 years (AOR 4.48, 95%CI [2.14–9.73]) and over 40 years (AOR 3.92, 95%CI [1.10–13.91]), junior college education or above (AOR 2.30, 95%CI [1.18–4.51]), and primiparas (AOR 3.82, 95%CI [1.86–7.86]). The most common source of information was the "Internet" (43.8%). Conclusions: Approximately 20% of Japanese pregnant women received CAM as therapy by practitioners, and the related factors were: tended to have baby at midwifery birth center and pregnancy complications. Almost 90% of respondents used CAM as self-care and the related factors were: older, had a higher educational level and tended to be primiparas. They used the Internet as their main source of information about CAM. This study investigated the associations of self-management (SM) skills and characteristics in participants with upper-limb lymphoedema (ULL) 12 months after breast cancer surgery The 44 women in the study received preventative education after surgery in 2019-2020. ULL was defined according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) grading system. Self-management ability was assessed using the Lymphedema SM Skill Scale and participants' characteristics using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Participants over 65 years of age and those with a higher HADS score tended to have poorer SM skills, as did those with high school education (P=0.045). SM skills for observation of swelling and preventing deterioration were less performed in participants with grade 0 ULL than in those with grade 1 and 2. Participants with grade 0 ULL may benefit from re-education at 12 months postoperatively, and women aged older than 65 years, those with mental distress, and those with a high school educational level may require longer-term support to prevent severe lymphoedema compared to those with higher levels of education and without mental distress. Background: Age-related differences in the limited range of motion of the lower extremities and their relationship with low back pain in juvenile athletes have not been well assessed. This study investigated the relationship between low back pain and limited range of motion of the hip and knee in young baseball players during the baseball season. Results: Participants comprised 1215 baseball players (216 pitchers, 999 fielders) aged 6–16 years who underwent medical checkups (self-completed questionnaire and physical examination). Of the 1215 players, 255 (21.0%) experienced seasonal low back pain requiring rest during the previous year. The prevalence of low back pain and a positive Thomas test, straight-leg-raising test, and heel-to-buttock test increased with age. Univariate analysis revealed that a positive heel-to-buttock test in both the throwing and non-throwing arm sides in the 11–12 age group and a positive Thomas test in the throwing arm side in the 13–14 age group were associated with seasonal low back pain (P = 0.0051, P = 0.021, and P = 0.048, respectively). Multivariate analysis, adjusted for factors associated with low back pain, showed significant associations between the positive heel-to-buttock test (odds ratio 1.75, 95% confidence interval 1.11–2.79; P = 0.016) and low back pain in players aged 11–14 years. Conclusions: A positive heel-to-buttock test is potentially associated with low back pain among juvenile baseball players. Particular attention should be paid to the limited range of motion of the knee joint and tightness of the quadriceps femoris muscle among baseball players with low back pain aged 11–14 years.
