The purpose of this study is to contribute to the establishment of metrics that can be used by libraries to analyze, anticipate, and plan for resource allocation for specialized print-based collections within an academic library. In the context of transactions associated with the circulation of library materials, that is checkouts, renewals, and holds, the resources this study will propose includes two ratios that can be used for evaluating and justifying continued allocation of library resources to specialized print collections. These ratios proposed are the Proportionate Number (P/N) and Internal P/N (I-P/N) Ratios. Beginning with the conceptual framework of how data driven decision making can contribute to the operation of the library, the study will also provide concrete examples of how to analyze data from an Integrated Library System (ILS). Data will be presented for the case study of Gumberg Library at Duquesne University. This study investigated influence of institutional management on collection development in Federal Colleges of Agriculture in Northern Nigeria. The study has 3 objectives which include to: determine the types of collection available in Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria; find out the influence of institutional management on collection development in Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria and find out the challenges faced by the library management on collection development in Federal College of Agriculture libraries. In order to achieve the stated objectives 3 research questions were asked. The study used a descriptive research design with a population of 72 management staff of Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria and the sample size drawn was 36 respondents. Out of the 36 copies of questionnaire administered, 28 copies were returned which represent 78%. Data collected was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is availability of collection in all the libraries under study. It was revealed that the college management has a lot of influence on collection development of the college libraries. Finally, the findings revealed that funds are not sufficiently provided, which affects adequacy of collections, there is also delay in the delivery of Collections among others. Purpose: The purpose of the work is to find out the impact of collection management practices of academic libraries and the challenges of library users when accessing library materials. Design/Methodology: A survey was conducted to ensure that a wider number of library users were involved. The convenience sampling technique was used to select library users and the quantitative data obtained were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 software. Findings: The main findings were: the electronic and non electronic resources of the two libraries were inadequate; University of Cape Coast Library had a section for the visually impaired, whilst University of Education, Winneba does not; some users of both libraries failed to get involved in the selection process and materials mainly used in the libraries were textbooks. Research Limitations: The work is limited to the outcome of collection building activities performed by library staff on the usage of the information resources of the libraries of two Ghanaian universities built by the Government to train graduate teachers for the country. Practical Implication: Materials in libraries are meant to be used hence collection management practices have a direct link on the patronage of libraries. Social implication: Libraries as agents of education need to be accountable to their stakeholders as public funds are used in their establishment. Despite the general consensus that field experience during library school is important for applying theory to practical situations, there is a lack of understanding about what students want from, and the barriers they face to acquire, graduate employment. A survey was sent to ALA accredited Master of Library Science programs in the United States, asking students about their library employment status and to rank factors that influenced their decision to accept their positions. Patterns emerged when results were grouped by various life factors. The results of this study show what students are looking for from employment, which could help employers recruit. Collections assessment in academic libraries has experienced a shift in recent years from project-based models to continuous models that aim improve the responsivity of library collections to campus needs. This article reports on how one university library used a library committee with representation from across library departments to develop a holistic, on-going Collection Management Cycle. This newly created process evaluates the entire library collection over a five-year period and aligns with library reporting requirements for university program review to minimize additional workload and improve the impact of external reporting activities. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a snapshot of some major collections-related trends and issues in current academic libraries today. These include using collection development policies; demand-driven acquisition (DDA) models; big deals; using the collections budget; rationalizing legacy print collections; stewarding local digital collections; and demonstrating value.Design/methodology/approach A web survey was developed and sent to 20 academic librarians via e-mail during the summer of 2016, along with a statement on the purpose of the study.Findings The findings are as follows: the collections budget is used to fund many costs other than content (such as memberships and MARC records); most libraries are experimenting with DDA in one form or another; most libraries financially support open access investments; most libraries participate in at least one collaborative print rationalization project; and libraries have diverse methods of demonstrating value to their institutions.Research limitations/implications This was a very selective survey of North American academic libraries. Therefore, these findings are not necessarily valid on a broader scale.Practical implications Within the limitations above, the results provide librarians and others with an overview of current practices and trends related to key issues affecting collection development and management in North America.Originality/value These results are quite current and will enable academic librarians engaged in collection development and management to compare their current policies and practices with what is presented here. A smart self-service kiosk (SSSK) in a library ensures that users are able to access library services without the help of librarians regardless of the location. An SSSK is web-based and allows library users to access library services remotely. Library users are able to check the availability of information resources, the location of the information resources, and the number of copies of a particular information resource in a particular library. This study sought to investigate the provision of information services at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) Library with a view to suggest a framework for implementing an SSSK. It could be like a point-of-sale self-service touch-screen kiosk check-out, like those used in supermarkets up and down the country, an information point in a tourist attraction, or a kiosk in an airport that allows people to check in without joining a counter queue. An SSSK would be different for every specific field, depending on the specific planned application. In the field of library and information sciences, an SSSK would be used to search for the availability of books, the location of books and to check a book in and out of the library. For this study a literature review was conducted to demonstrate a need for a framework which involves the provision of information services through an SSSK at the NUL Library. The study identified the need for an SSSK to provide reference and information services at the NUL Library. This includes searching for the availability of information resources or just books like elsewhere, the location of such information resources, as well as the self-checking in and out of information resources in the library. The library users through the web portal of the SSSK would also be able to access the library services remotely. The study proposes a framework to provide information services through a SSSK at the NUL Library. The evolution of information communication technology tools has caused unprecedented change in the information seeking behavior of library users to the extent that the relevance of academic libraries in the 21st century is often being questioned. As the Covid-19 greatly affected the libraries, so too did the librarians' attempts to reach the library users through online and remote services. These emergency reforms have offered an unexpected opportunity to reevaluate and re-imagine current service models in order to improve the library's user experience. This study looks into the awareness of online library services and the frequency of utilization of online resources among education students during the COVID 19 Pandemic. Descriptive in nature, the study utilized an online survey which was accomplished by 70 students of the College of Education. Findings revealed that respondents are fully aware of the online library services and they frequently utilize the library's online resources regardless of their gender, program, and year level. Findings also showed that the higher the level of respondents' awareness on online library services, the more frequent they utilize the online resources. As a whole, the results imply that libraries need to ensure the sustainability of their online resources and services by providing user education and supporting the users to cope-up with the changing information environment so that optimum use of information resources becomes possible during and after the pandemic. The study assessed the nature and level of the use of resources for electronic collection development (ECD) in three Nigerian university libraries. A population of 208, comprising professional librarians and para-professionals was used for the study. Questionnaire, observation checklist and interview schedule were used in collecting data for the study. Data generated were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means and standard deviations. Different types of resources required for enhancing ECD in Nigerian university libraries such as "Internet", "Online Public Access Catalogue", "Desktop computers", "CD-ROM", etc were identified. Available resources for (ECD) in the three institution libraries were identified. The findings highlighted challenges of (ECD) in Nigerian university libraries. Strategies that will help in stemming the tide of challenges of electronic collection development were suggested. Academic libraries in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other developing countries will leverage on this study for a robust and efficient electronic collection development practice. As libraries commit to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, it is critical to measure the strengths and weaknesses of collections in response. Building off already established approaches of collection diversity audits, the author argues that it is possible to use MARC metadata to perform exploratory analyses at a large scale. This paper discusses the process of planning, preparing the data, and performing an analysis, following the trajectory of an analysis of the 2.8 million geographic subject headings present in the University of Toronto Libraries' MARC records. Around the world, libraries face the challenge of being underutilized, and special libraries in Sri Lanka in particular are no exception. Studies show that this can be overcome through marketing. Current study determines how marketing is applied in special libraries in the Colombo district, Sri Lanka and their future prospects in marketing. The study identifies the current marketing activities, marketing techniques and librarians' perception towards marketing in selected special libraries (n=50) in the Colombo district. Findings revealed that special libraries under study have a sufficient number of resources acquired and market opportunities available. However, it is assumed that unintentional marketing is been carried out in a majority of libraries as reflected by the absence of a marketing plan, absence of user surveys and lack of persuasive communication with parent organization for undertaking marketing. Most librarians give priority to promotional works such as conducting awareness programs, focusing on public relations, designing new information products and advertising library events and services. Techniques used for marketing were email lists, library website, seminar and workshops, traditional communication methods and social media. A majority of librarians were of the view that marketing concept can be applied to special libraries. Periodical collections, library spaces and infrastructure were identified as highly marketable resources. Other libraries are not considered as a challenge when employing marketing practices in their own library but respondents hold a mixed perception regarding how users would react to marketing practices if they are implemented in their libraries. In the changing landscape of libraries, the area of Research Support Service is emerging, with new opportunities, and challenges. The study is based on the role of the libraries in supporting research in the Institutes and Universities. This literature review identifies the current level of publications that deal with the relationship of the libraries and their role in the research process, and an examination of science researcher's information seeking needs, role of university libraries in supporting research, changing electronic environment and changing librarian's role, and challenges faced by the libraries with these changes. It aims to determine whether notable changes in the research support services for the doctoral students and scientists have emerged in recent years. The study shows that the support services of doctoral students and scientists provided by libraries follow a steady trend, with many subtle changes, particularly on the technological basis. The selected literature review spreads from 2000 to 2019. The coverage is balanced in that here on one hand the support service of the researchers, the researchers' information seeking need, the environment for the research is discussed, and on the other hand, the challenges for the libraries in print and electronic environment is discussed. This study was conducted to develop library services at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya by developing a system using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) method and the Mobile Library. This is done to complement the website services which can be accessed through catalog.uinsby.ac.id. Many users, especially students, experience restlessness in returning the book because there is no reminder feature for the deadline to return the book. As well as resulting in the number of fines that increase in number for each day. The purpose of this research is to make users more free to use the library services of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya which are packaged in a mobile library application using the Ionic framework. This study uses the RAD method to develop applications. One of the advantages and disadvantages of the RAD method is that RAD has a flexible nature in its development so it doesn't wait for one process to be done. The results of this study are the creation of a mobile library application that has an online extension feature, a reminder of the date of return of borrowed books, and the total amount of late book fines. So that it does not interfere with the circulation of the book if there is a bridge in returning the book and equalization is maintained in each user In addition, it also increases interest in student learning and services and improves effective and efficient library management. As Florida State University transitioned to Canvas in 2017, the Distance Library Services team planned and implemented Springshare LTI, subject-specific Library Tools within the Learning Management System. These tools present invaluable teaching and learning opportunities for the libraries within digital classrooms and offer options for connecting students to library staff and services. With heightened interest from the distance library community in LMS integration, the goal of this paper is to examine an experience with LTI integration after three years of partnership. Furthermore, recommendations will be offered for other libraries interested in implementing LTI integrations in their LMS to support distance learning and on-campus populations. Digital native held information in their hands through the gadget. Previous research to 460 respondents in six university libraries in Surabaya, Indonesia shows that overall quality of the library is excellent. However, it does not encourage them to come to the library. Therefore, library needs to facilitate digital native needs by repositioning as a community hub, a place where community interact, collaborate and learn. The library can also apply a hybrid library concept by adding digital collection through subscription or repository. Findings from previous research show that there are facilities need to be prioritized to encourage digital native to come: common rooms, discussion rooms, and books that support students' academic needs. These facilities are re-arrange as a new library interior design. The method used to redesign the libraries are by conducting an interview with the users and questionnaires. This article presents a systematic review of E-book user studies from 2001 to 2017. It focused on qualitative and quantitative studies that examined academic user groups' attitudes and interactions with E-books. The review aimed to reveal users' knowledge of the E-book format, their ability to define an E-book, their awareness of E-books' availabilities from the institutions' libraries, as well as their appreciation of E-books' advantages. The authors also considered respondents' usage of E-books such as the devices that fostered E-book access, internet avenues individuals' utilized to locate the materials, printing and downloading of E-books, and the time individuals' spent reading E-books online and the frequency of their access. The literature illustrated the importance of E-books to all members of the academic community for research and coursework. Still, studies pointed to a lack of awareness or familiarity among students, faculty, and staff of their institution's E-books especially with the format's features and the various collections owned by the university. In 2015 RMIT University commenced a two-year building redevelopment project which included completely refurbishing the main library. Approximately 180,000 books were temporarily moved to off-site storage and this posed the challenge of how to manage a working collection so that there would be minimal impact on the university's students and staff still requiring 'just in time' access. In preparation, the library implemented a two-year project to enable it to continue to provide high-level services for the duration of the construction work. The application of OPAC service in the library has been going on for a long time. This service has given many advantages to users as a quick and accurate tool for information retrieval. Even so, not all people use OPAC service; in fact, previous researches reveal that the application of OPAC service is decreasing. Therefore, this study aims to find out what is the interpretation of OPAC by the users of the library of Universitas Airlangga, thus gaining a deeper analysis on the matter. The method used for this study is qualitative method, with purposive sampling as the technique to determine informants, while the techniques of data collection are done by in-depth interview and observation. The result of this study will be explained using Encoding-Decoding concept from Stuart Hall, which produces three position typologies of the users who used OPAC service in the university library. Those three positions are Dominant/hegemonic position where the users understand the meaning directly according to the purpose of OPAC service; Negotiated position reveals the position of the users who are quite understand the aim of OPAC service; and Oppositional position in which the users who strongly object the library's purpose to provide a quick and accurate information provider through OPAC service. As the number of reference questions continues to decline across academic libraries, innovative models have been developed to highlight collections and reach underserved communities. This article describes four outreach models at the University of New Mexico University Libraries, including satellite outreach services, pop-up book trucks and events, and relationship building at various locations on and off campus. The authors describe innovative approaches including curated browsing experiences and relationship marketing to underserved communities. The paper takes a look at the incidence of mutilation and theft and of library materials, and gives users’ assessment of library security and factors that influence mutilation and theft among library users in Nigerian university libraries. Librarians all over the world are increasingly disturbed with the safety and physical integrity of important intellectual properties. Periodical and reference materials are the most likely materials that will be mutilated. All of the libraries still rely exclusively on manual checks carried out by unskilled personnel at the library exit and entrance. The high cost of photocopying and frequent breakdown of copiers was the causes of library material theft and mutilation. The results show that all the university libraries stamps specific pages, with security personnel and porters are at the entrance door of the libraries checking in and checking out users of the library. Findings from the study revealed that university libraries in Nigeria must adopt security measures to prevent theft of library materials. Therefore, media centers and libraries must adopt security measures to protect the software and hardware from serious harm. Building effective communication and interdepartmental partnerships are essential components of strengthening services, policies, and procedures to meet the individual information needs of students, faculty, and the college community. Despite major advancements in library services for users with disabilities, there are ongoing challenges, which need to be addressed. It is essential to develop inclusion and accessibility frameworks that serve mutual departmental interests to share and document lessons learned along the way. This article explores the evolving shared leadership between an Architecture Librarian/Liaison to the AccessAbility Center; and the Director of Student Disability Services at the City College of New York to examine strategic methods of managing, enhancing, and integrating, universal inclusivity and diversity in library services. The Librarian Liaison must take an active role in matters of accessibility policies and practices to meet user needs with cultural sensitivity. Merging the individual experiences, both authors deliver tangible solutions in creating more accessible services and environments, including an assessment checklist to demonstrate whether the Libraries have barriers and/or accessible spaces. The collaborative observations and strategic methods may be applicable to similar academic institutions that are considering transformative outreach initiatives to aid underserved populations such as library users with various disabilities. There is no gainsaying that academic libraries are a natural goldmine for the University community and for the general public as a whole. Extant literature has shown that academic libraries are source of enrichment for curriculum and research thus leading to academic productivity and global visibility of the parent institution. The realization of this fact has gone a long way in enhancing the status of academic libraries globally by changing the orientation of library clienteles and also correct the misconception in which they perceive the library as an antique, a reading place and has little or nothing to offer them. Thus, 21st-century academic library is now being viewed as an invaluable resource and a gold mine which is supposed to be harnessed and cherished by library clienteles. Collaboration between librarians and archivists is a valuable way to share expertise and effort when instructing first-year English students on research skills they will need to succeed in college. It is also vital to orienting new faculty to library and archive resources for their scholarship and teaching, as well as encouraging students to value the library and archives resources and knowledge. The unique first-year English program at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) provides a constantly renewing pool of both new students and faculty members. This article identifies common themes in library and archive instruction and key elements of engaging first-year faculty and their students in becoming long-term patrons, in the midst of Georgia Tech's Library Next initiative, a re-imagining of the twenty-first century library and a major renovation of physical spaces. Wikipedia has become a ubiquitous source for information, as well as a global community of people dedicated to the free exchange of knowledge. While its convenience may seem at first glance to be a threat to the traditional role of libraries, an overlap of purpose fosters unique opportunities for working together to advance free access to high-quality information and empower learning. This article will address these opportunities by providing specific examples of ways in which libraries can collaborate with Wikipedia to achieve the common goal of making information more accessible, while increasing their utility beyond their local community. An overview of resources to facilitate this endeavor will be provided, along with example projects aimed at exposing library content, teaching information literacy skills, and engaging communities. This paper addressed digitization initiatives in university libraries in Nigeria as a backbone for implementing a sustainable and reliable institutional repository (IR), using Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Ibadan as a reference point. In a nutshell, the whole essence of this paper is to document Kenneth Dike Library experience in respect of the digitization initiative taken in October, 2010, as a platform for implementing Institutional Repository (IR) for the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Purpose -- This paper aims to explore library--community collaboration from both a theoretical and practical perspective, highlighting successful collaborative strategies and projects and illustrating important considerations for libraries that are considering community partnerships. Design/methodology/approach -- This paper consists of a literature review and several "capsule" case studies of projects completed at one academic library to illustrate principles that can result in successful collaborative projects. Findings -- Library--community collaboration presents significant benefits if the needs and priorities of all collaborating partners are taken into account. Successful projects will use the strengths of one partner to balance the weaknesses of another, will be based on shared goals, will offer credit to all partners and will result in stronger relationships for all involved. Originality/value -- Although library-- community partnerships are not uncommon, many of these partnerships are housed in public libraries or involve only large, institutional players. This paper explores several non-traditional academic library initiatives involving youth service learning and outreach to smaller community groups that might otherwise be ignored by large university libraries. This study explores the facilities and problems related to the public sector college libraries of Punjab Province of Pakistan in terms of resources i.e. stock, staff, finance, buildings, furniture etc. It was a quantitative research based on survey method. Cluster sampling technique was used to collect data from college librarians. A structured questionnaire was sent to college librarians through postal mail with self addressed return envelope. 48 respondents out of 63 (76%) returned back-filled questionnaires. The data collected through questionnaire was statistically analyzed using frequency statistics. On the basis of analysis, results have been drawn. Findings revealed the library professionals opinions about problems faced by college libraries in Punjab Province of Pakistan. It has been found that college libraries are facing a lot of problems. They have not proper and purpose built library buildings. They are facing the problems of inadequate staff, lack of furniture, insufficient library material and improper shelving of library material etc. This paper makes recommendations that can help to solve the problems of college libraries especially in Punjab Province and generally in Pakistan. It will help library administrators in policy making and allocation of funds for college libraries. This article tests ALIA's statement that ‘library print and ebook collections will establish a 50:50 equilibrium by 2020’ against the experience and likely trajectory of Curtin University Library. It identifies features of the higher education landscape that have led to the development of epreferred strategies, outlines current collection principles, and describes the current state of the Library's holdings. Looking ahead, the article charts the likely impact of the current collection development framework over the next six years, considering questions relating to budget, use of space, client experience and treatment of the legacy print collection. Over the past few decades, there has been a growing critical mass of scholarly interest in the study of popular romance fiction as a literary form in its own right. While much of the scholarship is available in academic libraries, few of the actual romance novels are. In response to curricular and faculty demand, two librarians decided to start a collection of popular romance novels at their academic library. The aim of this paper is to provide readers with a snapshot of the Lithuanian library sector since the year 2000. The sector functions as a modern, open, user-oriented, and professional system comparable to other library sectors in Europe. The community of Lithuanian librarians is organized in several professional associations that help in developing different aspects of library work: cooperation, supporting and expanding library activity, and coordinating mutual initiatives. The legal foundations for providing access to information, and the institutions providing information and ensuring its preservation in various forms, are set out in the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania and a set of laws regulating library work. The Lithuanian Ministry of Culture is authorized to regulate state administration of all libraries in Lithuania. The library system consists of the networks of public libraries, academic libraries, school libraries, and special libraries. This paper presents the developments in each of these networks over the past fourteen years. In 2011, a "scientifically" derived strategic plan was developed, which marked a new turn in the management of the state library sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
