Controlling sediment to reduce debris-flow hazard is generally approached using retention basins that can be closed or have an outlet structure, generally an open check dam. They are usually placed in mild slope zones that allow minimal works for the excavation and the foundation of the outlet structure if present. Recently, it has been shown that the detention of sediments can also be achieved in the high-sloping reaches of debris-flow channels using deposition areas, basins that are open on the downstream side. In this work, we propose an approach for controlling the sediment volume transported by debris flows consisting of a cascade of deposition areas and retention basins. We also include a framework for planning, sizing, and checking the works. Two scenarios are considered, corresponding to the maximum values of the debris-flow peak discharge and volume, respectively. Moreover, the presence or absence of boulders is also considered. For this purpose, a method that evaluates the clogging of a single open check dam as a function of the coarse fraction of the sediment volume is simply extended to the case of multiple dams and implemented in a routing model. The proposed approach is applied along Ru Secco Creek in northeast Italy to defend a resort area and a village hit by a high- magnitude debris flow in 2015. After a careful survey and study, a solution with a combination of deposition areas and retention basins is planned and sized. The validity and performance of the proposed solution are analyzed using debris- flow modeling for two scenarios, considering both the absence and presence of boulders. Flood events, whose number and intensity are predicted to increase in the Mediterranean region, are difficult to monitor. This causes the number of observations of suspended sediment and total phosphorus concentration (|SS| and |TP|, respectively) during their occurrence to be still scarce. Non-perennial or temporary water bodies, which react more promptly to rainfall events, represent ideal natural observatories. In this study, observations of streamflow, |SS| and |TP|, carried out during some flood events, in the Celone river basin, a temporary river located in south-eastern Italy, are presented. The research examined the correlations between flows, concentrations and loads of sediment and phosphorus and investigated factors that influence sediment and phosphorous dynamics in the river basin. The results show no relationship between the time of the year and the precipitation quantity of each event. The high coefficient of determination of the |SS|–|TP| correlations (R2 = 0.67 on average) proves the importance of soil erosive processes in the delivery of phosphorus to the river. More than 73% of the total suspended sediment load and 83% of total phosphorus load in the period 2010–2011 were transported during the 11 monitored events. In addition to the discharge, |SS| and |TP| also depend on numerous other factors related to land management, such as soil cover and fertilizations. The study, thanks to the improved understanding of the mechanisms governing sediment and phosphorus losses, represents a useful contribution for river basin authorities who have to draw up management plans aimed at preventing eutrophication phenomena and soil fertility reduction. Reliable descriptions of erosion events are foundational to effective frameworks relevant to the fate of tidal landscape evolution. Besides the rhythmic, predictable action of tidal currents, erosion in shallow tidal environments is strongly influenced by the stochastic wave-induced bottom shear stress (BSS), mainly responsible for sediment resuspension on tidal flats. However, the absence of sufficiently long, measured time series of BSS prevents a direct analysis of the combined tide- and wave-driven erosion dynamics and its proper representation in long-term morphodynamic models. Here we test the hypothesis of describing erosion dynamics in shallow tidal environments as a Poisson process by analysing, with the peak-over-threshold theory, the BSS time series computed using a fully coupled, bi-dimensional numerical model. We perform this analysis on the Venice Lagoon, Italy, taking advantage of several historical surveys done in the last 4 centuries, which allow us to investigate the effects of morphological modifications on spatial and temporal erosion patterns. Our analysis suggests that erosion events on intertidal flats can effectively be modelled as a marked Poisson process in different morphological configurations because the interarrival times, durations, and intensities of the over-threshold exceedances are always well described by exponentially distributed random variables. The resulting statistical characterization allows a straightforward computation of morphological indicators, such as the erosion work, and paves the way for a novel synthetic, yet reliable, approach for the long-term morphodynamic modelling of tidal environments. In recent decades, fluvial erosion processes in highly anthropized areas are mainly associated with in-stream gravel mining activities or with the presence of artificial reservoirs which have increased the erosive capacity of the river as a consequence of the reduced sediment transport or the modification of the longitudinal profile of the channel. On the other hand, the role of pollutants in the degradation processes of soils with a predominantly clayey component is little known. The present study, through chemical analyses of water and mineralogical–geotechnical analyses of clayey soil samples taken along some river channels in central Italy in correspondence with water treatment plants, highlights how "polluting" elements present in the water can modify the crystalline lattice and consequently, the resistance parameters of the soil itself, making it more susceptible to erosion processes. In particular, significant are the variations of the Plasticity Index, which tends to double in all the samples and the transformations of clayey minerals such as illite and kaolinite, toward montmorillonite and smectite, with consequent breaking of the ionic bonds and decrease of the material cohesion. Although in the cases studied this phenomenon was quantitatively less relevant than the "mechanical" processes described above, it could have a greater impact in the presence of landfills or large production settlements (agricultural or industrial) where the concentration of pollutants can be substantial. The analysis of suspended sediment transport and of its variations over time is crucial for understanding environmental evolution and it is the key to future challenges caused by current global warming. The Mediterranean area is a hot spot for global changes, and the variation of precipitation amount and intensity will modify the environment of this region. In this work, we analyse the time series of suspended sediment transport of two rivers located in central Italy by using statistical and artificial intelligence techniques. Our study aims to re-analyze time series of suspended sediment transport, in order to demonstrate that climate change is responsible for the substantial decrease in the amount of sediment over the past century, in relation to the atmospheric teleconnections of the North Atlantic. Anthropic pressures like reforestation, land use change, and dam building have influenced the sediment transport capacity of rivers, causing a reduction of sediment concentration in water. These results are key factors to determine the future management of the Mediterranean areas, where the future scenarios predict a greater drop in yearly precipitation, and therefore a possible further decrease in the sediment transport capacity of the rivers, with major consequences for coastal and fluvial environments. Knowledge about historical changes in sediment fluxes in most coarse‐bedded rivers worldwide is extremely limited. In consideration of this deficiency, we developed a width‐based approach to estimating multi‐decade changes in coarse sediment fluxes occurring at reaches of the Po River and 21 of its tributaries in northern Italy. The estimation was based on temporal variations in the reach‐averaged width of the river's active channel, and such width was expressed through a dimensionless index of coarse bed material load (Iq). The index was determined in two periods: 1954–1998 and 1998–2020. Statistically significant relationships were found between temporal variations in Iq occurring in reaches of the Po River and at key locations of each specific reach (i.e., upstream reaches and tributaries). Such evidence of coherent changes in sediment transfer through space and time led us to conclude that Iq variations can be regarded as a reliable proxy for historical changes in sediment transport in a river reach. The application of the approach to the investigation of the Po River catchment provided new insights into the historical changes characterizing coarse sediment fluxes along the river and its major tributaries. From 1954 to 1998, an average decrease in coarse sediment fluxes of about −20% and −30% occurred along the river and the terminal sectors of its tributaries, respectively. The estimations showed that coarse sediment fluxes exhibited a slightly lower decrease in the last two decades, with sediment flux recovery occurring only in some tributaries. The results suggest that a profound change in sediment dynamics and fluxes has occurred, and is likely still ongoing, in the Po River system, despite the decrease in human disturbances (e.g., in‐channel sediment mining) in more recent times. Tidal channels form the pathways for tidal currents to propagate and distribute clastic sediments and nutrients, thus providing a primary control on tidal‐landscape ecomorphodynamics. Most tidal channels in both estuarine and lagoonal environments have a tendency to meander, yet very few studies exist that investigate the full spectrum of processes controlling tidal meander morpho‐sedimentary evolution. The Venice Lagoon (Italy) offers a unique opportunity to shed light on this topic, because a long record of morphological and sedimentary data is available, which allows one to relate tidal channel evolution to the hydrodynamic and morphological changes undergone by the lagoon. In particular, during the last 130 years, feedback between rising relative sea levels and anthropogenic interventions has caused severe modifications of the Lagoon hydro‐ and morphodynamics. Here we investigate how these modifications fed back into the morpho‐sedimentary evolution of a meandering tidal channel located in the northern lagoon. Combining extensive datasets of aerial photographs, topographic and bathymetric surveys, geophysical investigations, sedimentary core analysis, and numerical modelling, we show that enhanced local tidal ranges and water discharges determined adjustments of channel cross‐sectional geometries proportional to increasing tidal prisms, while changes in local tidal asymmetries caused modifications of the local sediment transport regime, resulting in the development of bar–pool patterns according to the dominant tidal phase. Such bar–pool patterns eventually determined channel migration through a bar‐push mechanism controlled by a fluvial‐like, quasi‐linear relationship between local channel curvature and lateral migration rates. Critical differences in sediment transport regime are, however, highlighted between fluvial and tidal meanders the latter being potentially characterized by high concentrations of suspended sediment during periods of slack waters when wind‐driven sediment transport processes are not negligible. The main purpose of this article is to give a general idea of the scientific activity that was carried out starting from the 2000s on the basis of the data collected in the plots installed at the Sparacia experimental station for soil erosion measurement in Sicily, South Italy. The paper includes a presentation of the experimental site, a description of the methods and procedures for measuring soil erosion processes both available in the literature and applied at the Sparacia station (sediment sampling and water level reading in the storage tanks for total erosion measurements; profilometer, and Structure from Motion technique for rill erosion measurements), and the main results obtained in the monitoring period in the experimental site. The latter concern the effects of plot size and steepness on soil loss, the measurement variability, the frequency analysis of soil loss, the rill erosion characterization, and the comparison between rill and interrill erosion rates. Each of these topics is addressed with multi-temporal analyses performed with increasing size of the available database, which allowed to draw robust conclusions. Soil loss did not vary appreciably with plot length in contrast with the assumption made in the USLE/RUSLE. The variability of the measurements of soil loss, runoff volume, and sediment concentration at the event scale in replicated plots decreased as the mean measured value increased. The normalized event soil loss was distributed according to a two-component distribution. A power relationship between rill volumes and lengths was established. The measurements also confirmed the morphological similarity between the channels of the rills and ephemeral gullies described by a power dimensionless relationship. Rill erodibility of the sampled clay soil varied over time, maintaining relatively low values. Finally, rill erosion was dominant relative to interrill erosion, and a more efficient sediment transport system through the rill network occurred as plot steepness increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sediment characterization is a key parameter to understand the geomorphological attributes of a catchment (i.e., assessing the variability of the sediment transport capacity and surface roughness of a hydraulic channel). This assessment can be performed in several ways, for instance, through numerous sampling techniques (i.e., pebble count and zig-zag methods). Sediment sampling using manual sieving inside a laboratory is a hectic process as it requires ample time and physical effort, particularly when the scale of interest is at the catchment level. In order to find the granulometric distribution of some sections of the Baganza streambed (northern Italy), in order to carry out analysis at the catchment scale, a hybrid technique (a combination of the conventional and photogrammetric method) is introduced. Different grain size distribution curves (GSDs) obtained from the image processing technique using Digital Gravelometer software and traditional sediment sieve analysis (sieve-by-weight method) were compared. Sediment sampling was limited to sections of the streambed that were visible during lower flows in the dry summer season. Sediment samples including fine soil fraction, were collected up to a depth of 30 cm, although the exposed areas behaved as gravels and cobble bars. The adopted hybrid technique approach for the characterization of fluvial sediments is desirable in order to accommodate the full range of particle sizes inside the riverbed. Digital photography was performed at ten different cross sections, along the longitudinal profile of the 30 km long reach of the Baganza River, to examine the sediment distribution, grading, and representative particle sizes (D10, D50, D90) at each of the respective cross sections. A comparison of the photogrammetric method and traditional sieve analysis revealed strong agreement in coarser segments of the grain size distributions, but it was deficient in the finer part (<2 mm) due to the shielding effect produced by bigger particles. However, the adopted hybrid technique appears to be quite efficient and promising in determining the GSD by reducing the costs and the sediment sample collection time in the field. Debris flow is one of the most dangerous natural processes in mountain regions and it occur in a wide variety of environments throughout the world. In the Italian Alps, some tens of thousands of damaging debris flow and, in general, torrential floods associated to intense sediment transport in secondary catchments have been documented in the last 300 years. These have caused socio-economic damage, damage to anthropogenic structures or infrastructures and in many cases casualties. Often, in the same basins, the occurrence of debris-flow processes recurs many years later. Prediction can often be spatial and based on the magnitude of the largest known process, while the temporal forecast is the most uncertain. It is also possible to increase the resilience of the population and of the territory. The present study aims at investigating different levels of debris-flow hazard in urban areas on Alpine alluvial fans and proposes a strategy for debris-flow prevention based on historical research and on a simplified analytical approach, methods that also involve relatively low costs. For such analysis, Ischiator stream catchment (ca. 20 km2) and its alluvial fan (NW Italy) were selected. This area was partly affected by historical torrential flood associated to intense sediment transport and debris-flow processes. Present-day instability conditions along the slope and the stream network were detected and synthesized through surveys and aerial photo interpretation integrated by satellite images (period 1954–2021). An estimation of the potential amount of moving detritus, referred to as debris flow, was carried out regarding the June 1957 debris-flow event, based on the predictive models. The individual hazard index value was estimated based on different methods. The results indicate that 56% of the area is exposed to flood associated to intense sediment transport hazard, which fluctuates from high to very high levels; such results are supported by debris-flow historical records. Since today almost half of the settlement (Bagni di Vinadio) is located on potentially risk-exposed areas, the urban evolution policy adopted after the 1957 event failed to manage the risk connection to debris-flow activity. The problem of providing data-driven models for sediment transport in a pre-Alpine stream in Italy is addressed. This study is based on a large set of measurements collected from real pebbles, traced along the stream through radio-frequency identification tags after precipitation events. Two classes of data-driven models based on machine learning and functional geostatistics approaches are proposed and evaluated to predict the probability of movement of single pebbles within the stream. The first class built upon gradient-boosting decision trees allows one to estimate the probability of movement of a pebble based on the pebbles' geometrical features, river flow rate, location, and subdomain types. The second class is built upon functional kriging, a recent geostatistical technique that allows one to predict a functional profile—that is, the movement probability of a pebble, as a function of the pebbles' geometrical features or the stream's flow rate—at unsampled locations in the study area. Although grounded in different perspectives, both models aim to account for two main sources of uncertainty, namely, (1) the complexity of a river's morphological structure and (2) the highly nonlinear dependence between probability of movement, pebble size and shape, and the stream's flow rate. The performance of the two methods is extensively compared in terms of classification accuracy. The analyses show that despite the different perspectives, the overall performance is adequate and consistent, which suggests that both approaches can provide modeling frameworks for sediment transport. These data-driven approaches are also compared with physics-based ones that are classically used in the hydrological literature. Finally, the use of the developed models in a bottom-up strategy, which starts with the prediction/classification of a single pebble and then integrates the results into a forecast of the grain-size distribution of mobilized sediments, is discussed. Background: Rainfall and other climatic agents are the main triggers of soil erosion in the Mediterranean region, where they have the potential to increase discharge and sediment transport and cause long-term changes in the river system. For the Magra River Basin (MRB), located in the upper Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, we estimated changes in net erosion as a function of the geographical characteristics of the basin, the seasonal distribution of precipitation, and the vegetation cover. Methods and findings: Based on rainfall erosivity and surface flow and transport sub-models, we developed a simplified model to assess basin-wide sediment yields on a monthly basis by upscaling the point rainfall input. Our calibration dataset of monthly data (Mg km-2 month-1, available for the years 1961 and 1963–1969) revealed that our model satisfactorily reproduces the net soil erosion in the study area (R2 = 0.81). For the period 1950–2020, the reconstruction of an annually aggregated time-series of monthly net erosion data (297 Mg km-2 yr-1 on average) indicated a moderate decline in sediment yield after 1999. This is part of a long-term downward trend, which highlights the role played by land-use changes and reforestation of the mountainous areas of the basin. Conclusion: This study shows the environmental history and dynamics of the basin, and thus the varying sensitivity of hydrological processes and their perturbations. Relying on a few climatic variables as reported from a single representative basin location, it provides an interpretation of empirically determined factors that shape active erosional landscapes. In particular, we showed that the most recent extreme storms associated with sediment yield have been characterised by lower cumulative rainfall, indicating a greater propensity for the basin to produce sediment more discontinuously over time. Vrgada Island is situated in the central part of the eastern Adriatic coast. Upper Cretaceous limestones crop out on the surface and Pleistocene sediments cover them in some parts of the island. This study focused on a coastal cliff trending N - S on the northern part of the island. Aeolian-alluvial deposits, which are 12.5 m thick were analysed and three different facies in this succession described. The lowermost facies A highlights a strong aeolian influence marked by an increased silt percentage and was deposited during colder climate conditions. Sand and gravel in facies B were deposited by streams of dense, cold water formed by melting snow and ice from the nearby Dinaric mountains. The bioturbated sandy facies C was probably formed during a warmer climate. An unusually high percentage of augite in the lowermost part of facies A can be explained by the input of volcanic dust, most likely from the Roman or Campanian volcanoes in Italy. This, combined with the surface textures on quartz grains detected from SEM photographs indicates a short distance transport for the sediment, no matter which mechanism was dominant. The sediments from Vrgada Island represent a transitional zone between the north Adriatic islands, where aeolian sediments dominate and the South - Eastern Adriatic archipelago, where mixed alluvial and aeolian sediments were observed. Changes in river pattern have been documented in the literature. The recognition of islands and vegetated patches, which is indicative of the evolution processes, requires simultaneous information at different points and at different times and field studies are still difficult and scarce. The present work, focusing the attention on a gravel-bed river, explores the possibility to conduct a first-step pattern changes analysis by identifying the evolution of the morphological features and taking information of islands and vegetated patches from satellite images easily available from Google Earth. The study is conducted by combining the information taken from both the satellite images and the field photos and the hydrological data. Here analysis concerns a reach of the Tagliamento River, in Italy, in a decadal timescale characterized by evident stream pattern changes. Results confirm that a combination of different factors determine favorable conditions for the river's evolution, but the frequency of occurrence of high-magnitude events is the most important factor to consider in a first-step analysis. This is because the frequency of occurrence of high-magnitude events affects, in turn, some of the other influencing factors. In particular, the present study highlights that different morphological features form in time periods characterized by different frequency of occurrence of high-magnitude events. On one hand, this could be related to the fact that high-magnitude events could influence the sediment transport and deposition mechanisms, modifying the ratio coarse-to-fine sediments and the grain-to-grain interactions, with consequences in the sediment flux variation and in the migration of the morphological features. On the other hand, the frequency of occurrence of high-magnitude events could affect the vegetation distribution and growth, contributing to determine a variation of the typology of the vegetation characteristics depending on the tolerances of the vegetation species. A sort of interface between the vegetated-dominated area, where the flow resistance is significant, and the flood-disturbance-dominated area, where the action by flow is significant, is determined with a progressive reduction of the number of active channels and development of the meandering bend. River estuaries, continental shelf, and sediment contamination are closely linked from the point of view of sediment transport and diffusion that is governed by different factors such as sea waves and currents, river flows and floods, and sediment characteristics. Taking these factors into consideration, we have examined marine environmental and marine bottom sediments off the mouth of a stream to highlight the main ways of sediment and contaminant transport and diffusion on the continental shelf. For this purpose, we followed a multidisciplinary approach, studying circulation of water masses, hydrological characteristics of water column, distribution and main characteristics of sediment grain size, sediment mineralogical composition, and metal concentrations of bottom sediments. Our results allowed identifying the presence of preferential ways of sediment deposition and areas of sediment spread for the Entella Stream, as well as the origin of some metals. In this study, we present the results of a very high-resolution bathymetric survey carried out offshore the dismissed industrial site of Bagnoli (Pozzuoli Bay, Gulf of Naples). The bathymetric maps and the thematic representation produced, allowed for detailed characterisation of the seabed lineaments and features. Seafloor bedforms and morphological features can be observed at a very high resolution. Moreover, the potential pattern of sediment transport can be inferred from the seafloor bedforms observed in the central sector of the surveyed area. The new morphobathymetric map of Bagnoli-Coroglio offshore provides a valuable tool for stakeholders towards a comprehensive planning and management addressed to environmental revaluation and rehabilitation of this disused industrial area. Beach retreat in the Emilia-Romagna coast, facing the north Adriatic Sea, is well-known since decades and several factors are behind this phenomenon: a scarcity of natural sediment supply by rivers, natural and anthropogenic subsidence, and a strong urbanization of the coastal zone. Several bedload measurement campaigns in one representative river of the Ravenna province (Savio River) have been carried out since 2017. At the same time, seasonal surveys of bathymetry were undertaken at the river outlet to correlate changes in sedimentation with river input. The river mouth is constrained by artificial embankments that possibly funnel out sediment offshore during river floods. However, monitoring of bedload transport correlated with bathymetric changes between July 2017 and November 2018 still found a positive budget of almost 5000 cubic meters. Local authorities in Ravenna are planning to dredge 20000 cubic metres from the river mouth to supply small nourishments outside the studied coastal cell. According to the measurements of bathymetric changes, the Savio mouth will need almost six years to recover, assuming the occurrence of a particularly efficient rate of sediment transport, like the one observed in the monitored period. Notably, the analysed period included a very large river flood that could overshadow the modal sediment transport operated by the river. Furthermore, with deepening of the mouth, the two villages adjacent to the outlet are likely to become more exposed to sea flooding, due to the propagation of surges inside the river mouth. Glaciated and recently (post-Little Ice Age) deglaciated areas are very dynamic environments, undergoing continuous changes, in particular as a consequence of climatic fluctuations and cryosphere changes. The intense geomorphic activity that takes place here conditions natural hazard, sediment transport and tourist fruition. A geo-morphological mapping with applicative purposes has to take into account the peculiarities and the dynamism of these specific areas. We here propose a methodological approach based on the interpretation of a multitemporal set of aerial photos (from 1983 to 2012), in a GIS environment, with application to the sectors modeled by Little Ice Age glaciers in the upper Orco Valley (NW Italy). The result is a geo-morphological map focused on the elements that are most relevant for application purposes, complemented by a map of the spatio-temporal distribution of the natural instability processes identified in the study area for the reference period, aimed to highlight the recent dynamism of the geomorphological elements in the map. Although general trends in transgressive to highstand sedimentary evolution of river‐mouth coastlines are well‐known, the details of the turnaround from retrogradational (typically estuarine) to aggradational–progradational (typically coastal/deltaic) stacking patterns are not fully resolved. This paper examines the middle to late Holocene eustatic highstand succession of the Po Delta: its stratigraphic architecture records a complex pattern of delta outbuilding and coastal progradation that followed eustatic stabilization, since around 7·7 cal kyr bp. Sedimentological, palaeoecological (benthic foraminifera, ostracods and molluscs) and compositional criteria were used to characterize depositional conditions and sediment‐dispersal pathways within a radiocarbon‐dated chronological framework. A three‐stage progradation history was reconstructed. First, as soon as eustasy stabilized (7·7 to 7·0 cal kyr bp), rapid bay‐head delta progradation (ca 5 m year−1), fed mostly by the Po River, took place in a mixed, freshwater and brackish estuarine environment. Second, a dominantly aggradational parasequence set of beach‐barrier deposits in the lower highstand systems tract (7·0 to 2·0 cal kyr bp) records the development of a shallow, wave‐dominated coastal system fed alongshore, with elongated, modestly crescent beaches (ca 2·5 m year−1). Third, in the last 2000 years, the development of faster accreting and more rapidly prograding (up to ca 15 m year−1) Po delta lobes occurred into 30 m deep waters (upper highstand systems tract). This study documents the close correspondence of sediment character with stratal distribution patterns within the highstand systems tract. Remarkable changes in sediment characteristics, palaeoenvironments and direction of sediment transport occur across a surface named the 'A–P surface'. This surface demarcates a major shift from dominantly aggradational (lower highstand systems tract) to fully progradational (upper highstand systems tract) parasequence stacking. In the Po system, this surface also reflects evolution from a wave‐dominated to river‐dominated deltaic system. Identifying the A–P surface through detailed palaeoecological and compositional data can help guide interpretation of highstand systems tracts in the rock record, especially where facies assemblages and their characteristic geometries are difficult to discern from physical sedimentary structures alone. Our capability to accurately predict at the local scale the morphological changes in a mountain river affected by a severe flood is currently limited. Given the importance of including geomorphological hazards in flood risk evaluation, some improvements in this direction are required. In fact, on the basis of the controlling factors typically considered in the literature, that are the unit stream power (ω pk) and the confinement index (CI), a relatively broad spectrum of width ratios (WR = ratio between channel width after a flood and channel width before a flood) occurring in response to major floods is commonly observed in streams. We extended previous research focused on parameters that influence the morphological response of a channel to a severe flood by investigating the role played by the type of sediment transport process that occurs in a mountain river. In particular, we explored whether a relationship exists between debris flood (i.e. a condition characterised by extremely high bedload) and intense channel widening. The case study was the Cordevole River (the Dolomites, Italy) and four of its tributaries, which were affected by the severe flooding induced by the Vaia storm in October 2018. WR was determined at the sub-reach scale, and ω pk was calculated with consideration for the flood peak discharge ascertained via hydrological modeling. Despite the significant relationships found among WR, ω pk and CI, 21 sub-reaches (out of 144) of the studied stream network widened intensely reaching a WR higher than approximately 4, often to a substantially larger extent than predicted by statistical models. Such sub-reaches were certainly or probably affected by debris floods, leading us to infer that debris floods can induce widening processes that are more intense than those occurring in response to water flows. Having said that, debris floods do not automatically imply very intense widening. Phthalates are an emerging class of environmental pollutants whose distribution and effects in aquatic environments are not well characterized. We analyzed intertidal and emerged beach sediments from the Abruzzo coastline, along the Adriatic Sea, finding significant phthalate concentrations in marine sediments. Phthalate baseline levels in the intertidal environment, marked by substantial interplay of sediment, water and air, were determined. We used statistical rank methods to select representative phthalate compositions, for which we derived risk levels for ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation. Our study shows that phthalates are a major cause of pollution along the Abruzzo coast, with river transport of sediments a continuous source of replenishment. Phthalate concentrations in two specific sites were determined to be of the same order of magnitude as the safety, remediation-warranting, threshold set by Italian law. The investigation of coarse sediment transport in wide mountain streams is very challenging because of limitations that affect the adoption of direct and indirect field monitoring techniques. Such river type represents then a stream typology for which quantitative knowledge of coarse sediment mobility, dynamics and fluxes is poor. This study uses tracer particles and a virtual velocity approach to gain insights about sediment mobility and coarse bed material transport in a wide mountain stream. Monitoring at the study area was conducted by tagging two types of tracer clasts, installing scour chains, and collecting data on water levels, transport processes, particle travel distances, and active layers over a period of 19 months and five transporting floods in the Tegnas Torrent (the Dolomites, Italy). Bed sediment was mobilized during a limited number of hydrological events (i.e. 6 to 9 per year), taking place in 50 to 400 h and inducing a total coarse sediment flux of about 1200 to 1400 m3 yr−1. The mobilization of coarse particles forming the streambed begins in response to a dimensionless shear stress (τ* c = 0.018) that is lower than thresholds commonly reported in the literature for mountain rivers and the estimated unit bed material transport was remarkably higher compared with those obtained in other mountain streams or gravel-bed rivers. The high mobility of streambed material can be related to the availability of fresh and unstructured sediment transported and deposited in the active channel by a high-magnitude event that occurred a few months before monitoring was conducted in this work, suggesting that sediment fluxes in a stream recently affected by a large flood could be considerably higher than those normally expected in a specific context. Finally, despite the existence of some application constraints, the experiment generated satisfactory results as regards the applicability of the virtual velocity approach in investigations of this stream type. In this paper, we present the results of a detailed geomorphological and sedimentological study of a coastal sector of southern Italy, the Pineta della foce del Garigliano SCI (i.e. Site of Community Importance), which is largely affected by shoreline retreat and the degradation of dune habitat. The analysis of shoreline evolution demonstrates that severe erosion processes have occurred over the last 50 years. They caused the complete dismantling of the foredune, whereas the anomalous and advanced position of the secondary dune promoted a progressive loss of vegetation habitat of high environmental value such as juniper (Juniperus oxycedrusssp.macrocarpa). Morpho-sedimentary data and hydrodynamic models suggest that the main climate events promoted a net longshore transport toward the South. Our analyses confirm that erosion processes are linked to natural factors but several negative human practices have contributed to the acceleration of shoreline retreat and degradation of the dune habitat. We examined the temporal profiles of many organic micropollutants analysed in a sediment core sampled from a highly anthropized tributary of the Po River, the Lambro River. Analysed for extractable organic halogens (EOX), total petroleum hydrocarbons (C 10 -C 40 TPH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), common legacy pollutants (DDTs, PCBs), halogenated flame retardants (PBDEs, DBDPE, TBBPA-bis, TCBPA, TBBPA, HBCDs), organotins (TBT, TPhT), antimicrobials (TCS, TCC), fragrances (AHTN, HHCB) and phthalates (DMP, DEP, DnBP, BBP, DEHP, DnOP), the dated sediment core revealed the historical record of 50 years of chemical contamination discharged into the Lambro and thereby the Po River. In this regard, the peak levels of PCBs and DDTs found in Lambro sediments were also identified in other sediment cores collected from the Po River prodelta in the Adriatic Sea, thus hundreds of kilometres downstream (Combi et al., 2020). The highest risk to aquatic organisms was associated with decades of high levels of C 10 -C 40 TPH, PBDEs, PCBs, PAHs, DDTs, EOX, TCC, AHTN and DEHP, which in different periods of the contamination history, showed exceedances of guideline/threshold values. C 10 -C 40 TPH and TCC, for example, were very high in the 1960s, whereas PCBs, DDTs, and PBDEs, peaked from the 1980s onward. The corresponding sums of PEC quotients ranged between 0.48 and 28.63, with a mean value (±SD) for the entire recording period of 10.62 ± 9.83. Environmental legislations and improved wastewater treatments were the main drivers of the recent downward trends observed for most of the chemicals investigated. This paper presents an integrated empirical methodology for assessing the amount of sediment transported from slopes to the main river in absence of a sediment transport monitoring system. The amount of transported sediment is calculated through the characterization of the sediment source areas including the identification of the slope phenomena responsible for the sediment propagation to the main river: shallow landslides, channelized debris flows and deep-seated rotational slides. On this basis, several scenarios related to the climatic conditions are defined: they indicate the number of possible slope phenomena and potential volumes of mobilized unconsolidated material from sediment source areas to the main river. In this paper, we investigate the impact of climate change on coastal sediment transport in a deltaic system in the northern Adriatic Sea, with reference to the period 2070-2099 in the IPCC A1B emission scenario. Wind fields obtained by means of the high-resolution regional climate model Consortium for Small-scale Modelling-Climate Limited-area Modelling were employed for computing wave climate at basin scale by means of the spectral wave model Simulating Waves Nearshore. This was used as a constraint for a nearshore hydromorphodynamic model (MIKE LITPACK), which was applied to a test site on the Po River Delta, located in northern Italy. Relevant sediment transport processes have been studied at storm and decadal time scales in order to capture climate change effects on single events and as an overall trend. The transport rates in the A1B climate change scenario were then compared with the corresponding results of a control analysis (period 1965-1994) representing the actual climate. Although predicted wave climate in the investigated scenario displays an overall decrease in sea severity offshore in the northern Adriatic Sea, the effects of these modifications are modulated during the onshore propagation, with different impacts on sediment transport depending on the considered process and time scale. The strategy presented in this work can find fruitful applications in the long-term modelling of coastal and transitional environments, in which morphology is strongly influenced by sediment transport in the nearshore zone, suggesting a methodological approach for coastal planning and management. River deltas and enclosed lagoons represent a zone where fluvial and littoral processes interact through the redistribution, erosion, and deposition of sediment, which have a large impact on coastal management and engineering. The focus of the study is to understand the correct balance between strategies that maintain the navigational efficiency of tidal inlets and those that respect the ecological and economical functions of coastal lagoons. We applied an integrated modeling system that links multiple hydrodynamic and morphodynamic models to understand how coastal processes and associated sediment transport influences the functioning of the southern inlet of the Barbamarco Lagoon in the Po River Delta, Italy. Moreover, our study provides engineering solutions to improve the inlet functioning efficiency and a proposal for a monitoring plan. Our results highlight the importance of the seasonal effects of wave climate on the littoral sediment transport. Model outcomes show that the dredging volume is approximately 15,000 cubic meter/year for the southern inlet, which may vary with wave climate. However, creating a wider seaward tidal channel will reduce dredging activities over a longer interval than would sediment removal. A deeper and wider channel will deflect the along shore current seaward and cause sediment to bypass the inlet. Therefore, the sediment will reach the erosional side of the inlet and enhance the redistribution of the sediment, which may reduce over wash during storms and high-water levels. Our results illustrate the ephemeral equilibrium of tidal inlets and coastal lagoons in deltaic systems impacted by large riverine sediment delivery. The volumes and dynamics of suspended sediments drained from a watershed are often unknown, especially in small creeks and tributaries where continuous discharge measurements are seldom available. The objective of this study was to assess in a qualitative and quantitative way the sediment dynamics of a small ungauged watershed in the Northern Apennines, Italy. We analysed and correlated the sediment volume concentration and grain-size distribution of the suspended sediments with the precipitation pattern. The study area is a small ungauged watershed (0.15 km2) that is dominated by intensive soil erosion processes and related landforms. The basin is oriented East-West with the south-facing slopes characterized by badland erosion processes. The north-facing slopes are cultivated and dominated by rill-interrill erosion phenomena. An morphometrical characterization of the basin was performed using a high-resolution DTM with a 1 × 1 m resolution. Subsequently, the physical characteristics of the topsoil were investigated based on grain size laboratory analysis. A detailed NDVI analysis of the vegetation was performed using Sentinel-2A images. Finally, we assessed the suspended sediments at the outlet of the basin using a laser diffraction technique. The Suspended Sediment Volume Concentration (SSC) and the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the eroded sediments, provide insights into the morphogenetic processes and the sediment transport dynamics of the basin. The measurements were conducted in autumn 2018 after an intense precipitation period and in spring 2019 after a dry phase. The results show a direct relationship between precipitation and SSC with a delay of about 2 h after the most intense precipitation events. Moreover, we reveal that the SMD values are inversely related to the precipitation due to turbidity effects. The SSC and SMD measurements allow for a detailed assessment of the dynamics between precipitation and suspended sediment load even though discharge volumes were not measured directly. The periodic removal of deposited sediment in Alpine artificial reservoirs can be carried out through the flushing technique, in which the bottom outlets of the dam are opened to let water flow through the gates, eroding, re-suspending and transporting the sediment downstream. However, this reservoir sediment management strategy normally generates marked variation both in the flow rate and in the Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) in the river reaches downstream of the dam and may produce negative effects on the riverine ecosystems and biotic communities, especially on fish. In particular, the alteration of river hydraulic parameters (i.e., water depth and flow velocity) combined with excessive turbidity values (i.e., high SSC values) may lead to a possible worsening of habitat suitability for fish, increasing animal stress. The existing known literature provides useful tools to model the effects of the varied river hydraulic characteristics and the increased fine sediment load, but separately. Due to the simultaneous increase of river flow and SSC, it would instead be advisable to combine these two parameters to obtain a comprehensive and representative fish habitat modelling during flushing events. Therefore, the present work aims to propose an innovative methodology for the European grayling (Thymallus thymallus, L. 1758) habitat modelling during sediment removal from an artificial reservoir, in order to minimize the ecological effects while optimizing reservoir sediment management. With the aim of generalizing our results, we considered two river reaches with different morphologies located in South Tyrol (NE Italy), respectively 0.8 km and 18 km downstream the Rio di Pusteria reservoir, two life stages of our model organism, grayling, a typical rheophilic freshwater fish species inhabiting the studied river, and three possible volumes of flushed sediment. Results showed that habitat suitability for spawning and juvenile grayling tended to decrease with increasing flow and SSC for each of the fish life stage considered. However, interestingly, it was preferable to increase the water outflow from the dam to reduce the flushing duration when considering high volumes of trapped sediment. • A high magnitude/low frequency event in an alpine basin was comprehensive analyzed. • The flood exhibited ω = 3865 W m−2 and an unit peak discharge = 3.3 m3 s−1 km−2. • A moderate response was shown by hillslopes, while the main stream was deeply altered. • Boulder mobility and massive bedload volume proved the outstanding flood magnitude. • Two large and infrequent floods occurred in the study basin were compared. To achieve a reliable analysis of the impacts induced in mountain basins by large and infrequent floods, all their main components, from the spatial-temporal distribution of meteorological agents to the hydrological, geomorphic and sedimentological response should be considered. Comprehensive study of the hydro-geomorphic responses is extremely valuable to increase the awareness of large floods, especially, in highly populated mountain areas. Such type of investigation requires a solid and wide dataset, which is why only few studies had the chance to describe the response in such a holistic way. This work comprehensively analyzed the high magnitude/low frequency Vaia event, a severe storm that affected northeastern Italy in October 2018 and thus the Rio Cordon study basin. The 80 h precipitation registered in the basin showed a total rainfall equal to 29.8% of the mean annual precipitation. The temporal distribution of rainfall presented two phases, i.e., a first characterized by moderate but persistent precipitation and a second more intense, exhibiting recurrence intervals over 50 years. A combination of indirect methods permitted the reconstruction of the hydraulic forcing acted in the Rio Cordon. Despite the implicit uncertainty, these methods clearly highlighted the high magnitude expressed by October 2018 flood, which generated a unit peak discharge equal to 3.3 m3 s−1 km−2 and a peak of unit stream power of 3865 W m−2, i.e., the highest hydraulic forcing conditions ever observed in 34 years. In terms of geomorphic changes, the use of pre- and post-event LiDAR data stressed out a moderate response of the hillslopes, where the (re)activation of the sediment sources was limited. Only few of these acted as sediment supplier to the main channel. The channel network instead, exhibited an evident response, with the Rio Cordon severely altered by wide lateral widening, deep streambed incision and armouring removal. The hydraulic and geomorphic forcing generated by October 2018 flood caused extensive streambed remobilization and boulder mobility that, in turn, induced the transport of a massive sediment volume. In this sense, the match between bedload observed and bedload predicted suggested the outstanding hydraulic forcing occurred and the quasi-unlimited supply conditions acted during the flood. The long-lasting monitoring program maintained in the Rio Cordon basin provided the rare opportunity to compare two high magnitude/low frequency floods and their induced effects. The September 1994 and October 2018 events were caused by different rainfall conditions, which resulted in different hydrological- and, especially, geomorphic- and sedimentological-responses. Wave-induced currents play a key role in coastal sedimentary and hydrodynamics processes, and in particular, rip currents are probably the most widely studied aspect. Rip currents are characterized by a strong seaward-directed flow, which can transport sediments, planktonic organisms, nutrients, pollutants, and suspended material. However, rip currents are also a hazard for beachgoers and constitute a well known risk to bathers. Several studies have been conducted to describe rip current dynamics and their implications along oceanic beaches, although only a few studies have considered rip dynamics along Mediterranean coasts. This study is an accurate investigation of rip current development in the Levanto pocket beach (Ligurian sea, NW Italy). Coastal video-monitoring, coastal modelling, field surveys, and laboratory analysis are well known methodologies used to study the behaviour of rip currents, but each has its limitations. To overcome this problem, we propose an integrated approach where different tools are integrated among these to obtain mutual validation among several different approaches. The results show how the rip currents investigated in this study can reach and exceed velocities of 1 ms−1, comparable with those of oceanic rip currents, and how these are a key component in the coastal processes that occur along a Mediterranean pocket beach. • Rip currents are a key component of coastal processes that develop in Mediterranean pocket beaches. • Rip currents features need several investigation tools integrated among them. • Results obtained through different tools were used for mutual validation of different investigation methodologies. • The sea bathing risk evaluation is not the only reason because rip currents must be studied in Mediterranean environments. The alteration of sediment transport regime represents one of the key factors controlling the response of fluvial systems to human impacts. Additional research efforts are required to define sound cause-effect relationships between the human pressures and the morphodynamic responses of sediment-starved gravel-bed rivers. This work deals with the evolution of the Parma River, a large Italian gravel-bed river affected over the last 160 year by multiple anthropogenic disturbances (i.e., land-use changes, in-channel mining and, more recently, the construction of a detention basin), which strongly limited the sediment availability to the high-plain portion of its course. The data collected allowed us to reconstruct the history of the impacts, the river morphological evolutionary trajectory, the sedimentological characteristics of the bed, and to estimate, leveraging a morphological approach, the variation in coarse sediment regime over the most recent period. After the cessation of intense in-channel mining in 1990s, the study sector located upstream from the detention basin shifted from a degrading (i.e., narrowing and incising) to a recovery phase, characterized by a mean coarse transport of 15,000–31,000 m3yr−1. These results demonstrate that the in-channel mining was the most impactful historical pressure acting on the river, and that a channel preserving some natural characteristics and passing from a condition of sediment-starvation to one of increasing sediment availability can recover an active morphodynamics within a short time period. The downstream sector was greatly affected by the reduction of sediment transfer that occurred in the 2000s caused by the construction of a detention basin. Its degradation continued over the most recent period and the coarse transport is currently very low (up to about 3000 m3yr−1 4 km downstream from the basin). This sector is characterized at the present by a morphodynamics defined as "slack", a condition induced by the complete evacuation of the mobile channel sediments, leading to extremely low bed material mobility and transport, and, consequently, to morphological degradation up to the achievement of a new quasi-equilibrium. We hypothesized that such an extreme state of alteration is relatively limited in space, affecting a gravel-bed river only at the reach scale in response to multiple overlapped impacts or because of an extremely severe perturbation (i.e., reduction) of the sediment availability and dynamics. • Human-induced sediment starvation causes alteration of gravel-bed river morphodynamics. • High armouring and low bed material load characterize a sediment-starved channel. • Increasing sediment availability can lead to a recovery of channel morphodynamics. • Multiple overlapped impacts can induce extreme morphodynamic alterations. Geomorphological and sedimentological surveys of the emerged and submerged beach-dune system are fundamental for a successful management and protection strategies for coastal planning and development. In particular, these surveys can reveal if coastal areas are affected by erosion, pollution and loss of habitats under the seasonal anthropic pressure related to tourism, leisure and professional fishing, urbanisation and/or other activities impacting the coastal marine resources. In the present study we discuss the results of the multidisciplinary monitoring activities carried out within the Sentina Natural Reserve (Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, Adriatic side of Central Italy, at the south-eastern end of the Marche Region) proposing an exportable methodological approach. Due to the absence of buildings, the study area has not been considered in the coastal protection plan by regional and local authorities and, as a consequence, it is currently exposed to severe coastal erosion, the rate of which has been more precisely determined during the present study. This monitoring testifies that most of the seaward surface of the beach disappeared resulting in a general set back of the whole beach environment. In the last decades, several restoration strategies have been adopted to protect and restore the dunes and the back dunes habitats and the municipality also carried out an emergency action to nourish the beach, including the use of sand dredged from the nearby city harbor. With this sediment management approach, a tradeoff between safety of navigation of harbor inlet and habitat conservation of Natural Reserve have been reached, since beach nourishment can reduce coastal vulnerability and risk, even though its sustainability in the long term is still debated. Coastal erosion coupled with human-induced pressure has severely affected the coastal areas of the Mediterranean region in the past and continues to do so with increasing intensity today. In this context, the Pisa coastal plain shows a long history of erosion, which started at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In this work, shoreline positions derived from historical maps as well as airborne and DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) surveys were analyzed in a GIS (Geographic Information System) environment to identify the main changes that have occurred in the last 142 years. These analyses were compared with 100 years of discharge data measured at the S. Giovanni alla Vena gauge to identify a possible correlation between the two sets of information. Finally, Sentinel-2 and Landsat images were studied to identify the dispersion of sediments transported by the Arno River. In particular, we found a minimum of fluvial discharge in the years 1954, 1978, and 2012 corresponding to a peak of erosion, while the reduced erosion rate and the fluvial discharge increased in the years 1928–1944, 1954–1975, and after 2012. The qualitative anticorrelation between discharge and erosion is particularly true if we take into account flood events with a value of discharge greater than 700 m3/s, which are those able to transport suspended sand. The remote sensing analyses of Sentinel-2 images acquired during the floods of 6 February 2019 and 3 December 2019, under the most typical wind and sea state conditions for this area (wind coming from SW and storms coming from W/SW and SW) show that during these events a consistent amount of sediment was transported by the river. However, the majority of these sediments are not deposited along the coastline but are dispersed offshore. Grain-size analyses on the transported sediment show that plumes are formed by coarse-to-medium sand, suitable for coastal nourishment, but the reconstructed sediment dispersion lines show that some sectors of the coastline are constantly in the shade. The study of suspended sediment transport requires continuous measurement of water discharge to better understand the sediment dynamics. Furthermore, a groundwater monitoring network can support the stream discharge measures, as it reveals how the interactions between surface water and groundwater may affect runoff and consequently sediment transport during flood events. An experimental site for the continuous monitoring of water discharge, suspended sediment transport and groundwater levels was set up in the Carapellotto basin (27.17 km2), which is located in Apulia, Southern Italy. Seven flood events that occurred in the operation timespan were covered with a full record of both water discharge and sediment concentration. Some monitoring problems, largely due to the clogging of the float by mud, suggested to improve the experimental set up. The results show high values of suspended sediments concentration which indicate the sub-basin's key role in the sediment delivery to the whole river system, while counter-clockwise hysteresis loops are the most frequent due to the basin characteristics. The effects of the interaction between surface water and groundwater are related not only to the flood magnitude but also to the hydrogeological features in the hyporheic zone. Studying fluvial dynamics and environments, GIS-based analyses are of fundamental importance to evaluate the network geometry and possible anomalies, and can be particularly useful to estimate modifications in processes and erosion rates. The aim of this paper is to estimate short-term erosion rates attributable to fluvial processes in two sample catchment sub-basins of the Marecchia river valley, by conducting quantitative morphometric analyses in order to calculate various descriptive parameters of the hierarchisation of the river networks and the mean turbid transport of streams (Tu). Sediment yield transported by streams can in fact partially express the amount of erosional processes acting within the drainage basin. The study area includes two sub-basins of the Marecchia valley (Senatello river, 49 km2 and Mazzocco river, 47 km2), chosen because of their similar extent and of the different location in the major catchment basin. Starting from geomorphological maps of the two river basins, the Tu parameter has been calculated and converted in short-term rate (average value 0.21 mm/year). Moreover, the comparison of these short-term mean data with the uplift rates calculated on a regional scale (0.41 ± 0.26 mm/year) in the Marecchia valley confirms that the northern Apennines may represent a non-steady state system. In 1997, in front of the Pescara Harbour (Italy), a detached breakwater was constructed. In the successive years, the sediment transport due to the combined action of waves and coastal currents, in the area between the detached breakwater and the entrance of the Pescara Harbour, produced an accumulation of about 40,000   m 3 of sediment per year. In this paper, the causes of the accretion of the bottom elevation in front of the Pescara Harbour entrance and the effects produced by the existing detached breakwater are investigated. The effects on the sediment transport of the introduction of a new submerged breakwater designed to protect the entrance of the harbour from sediment siltation are investigated. In particular, the ability of the designed submerged breakwater, located orthogonally to the longshore current, to intercept the aforementioned solid material and to significantly reduce the accretion of the bottom in the area in front of the harbour entrance, was numerically verified. Numerical simulations were carried out by means of a model of the bottom-change composed of two sub-models: a two-dimensional phase resolving model that is used to calculate the fluid dynamic variables changing inside the wave period and a second sediment transport sub-model to simulate the bottom changes, in which the suspended sediment concentration is calculated by the wave-averaged advection–diffusion equation. The equations of motion, in which the vector and tensor quantities are expressed in Cartesian components, are written in a generalised curvilinear coordinate system. A study on the Rare Earth Element (REE) distribution in the bottom sediments of the Gulf of Tigullio (north-west Italy) was conducted. The results constitute a baseline for this zone of the Ligurian Sea and enabled the obtaining of valuable information on the origin and transport of sediments in the gulf. The distribution of REEs is controlled by phosphates, mainly monazite, and is generally homogeneous in the study area, reflecting the homogeneous distribution of the minerals. Some differences in REE and Sc distribution allow us to identify two sub-basins (Entella and Gromolo torrent sub-basins) characterised by slightly different geological frameworks. The "hat-shaped" observed patterns seem to indicate an overprinting of the original REE patterns due to exchanges between phosphates and seawater. REEs seem to be related with the rocks outcropping in the area, although an indirect effect of anthropic activity could be seen near a fish farm. • This paper gives the baseline values of REEs in the Eastern Gulf of Tigullio. • REE distribution in this area is controlled by phosphates, particularly by monazite. • REEs allowed to distinguish two different sub-basins. • The observed "hat-shaped" REE patterns derive from phosphate-seawater exchanges. • REEs have a natural origin, but a little anthropogenic effect could be observed. In this paper we propose a three-dimensional numerical study of the coastal currents produced by the wave motion in the area opposite the Cetraro harbour (Italy), during the most significant wave event for the coastal sediment transport. The aim of the present study is the characterization of the current patterns responsible for the siltation that affects the harbour entrance area and the assessment of a project solution designed to limit this phenomenon. The numerical simulations are carried out by a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic model that is based on the Navier–Stokes equations expressed in integral and contravariant form on a time-dependent curvilinear coordinate system, in which the vertical coordinate moves in order to follow the free surface variations. The numerical simulations are carried out in two different geometric configurations: a present configuration, that reproduces the geometry of the coastal defence structures currently present in the harbour area and a project configuration, which reproduces the presence of a breakwater designed to modify the coastal currents in the area opposite the harbour entrance. Barriers and spits connected to fluvial sedimentary sources represent environments which tend to evolve rapidly and experience sudden transformations, mainly driven by changes in sediment supply and path. As a consequence, the variability of facies is significant even within small sedimentary records. The 7 km long barrier-spit system facing the Goro Lagoon, and fed by the mouth of the Po di Goro, is a typical example of an accretionary coastal morphotype, suitable to describe adjacent nearshore depositional environments and their stratigraphic signatures, variability, and relationships. Thirteen short cores of sediment were sampled in order to represent the variable depositional sub-environments from the shoreface (prodelta-delta front) to the back barrier, crossing the active barrier-spit and the ancient spit arms and relative swales. The description of the modern sedimentary records, improved upon using core X-rays, has been coupled with information on the morphological changes which occurred during the period of maximum spit development (1955–2000), based on available aerial photos and a cartographic/topographic dataset. The results obtained allow for the description and interpretation of the depositional environments changing at the human-scale. Sediments of the upper shoreface are quite uniform, composed by evenly laminated sands; the transition between delta front and prodelta at a depth of 6 m is marked by the alternation of sand and mud beds. These reflect the periodic changes in sediment supply by the river, as well as storm events. The most recent spit branch and the relative back barrier-swale environment are the results of the rapid progradation of the spit system, which implies phases of rapid longshore growth, hooked spit development, cannibalization, overwash, and breaching. Morphodynamic changes have resulted in an overlap of short sedimentary records where stratigraphic signatures are linked either to phases of sediment transport and selection by waves and tidal currents (cross-bedding, foreset, and planar laminated sands, shell imbrication, massive beds) or to phases of sedimentary stasis when biological activity is predominant (algal mat and bioturbation). Human signature is also well marked inside the stratigraphic record. Clam harvesting is carried out within the lagoon, causing the physical disturbance and winnowing of the superficial sediment, thus inducing the local formation of graded beds and shell rehash. • The deltaic barrier spit system of Goro is prograding during 1955–2000. • Development of contiguous depositional environments occurs at human scale. • Detailed core stratigraphy and historical aerial photos are coupled. • X-rays improve recognition of sedimentary structures and events. • The anthropic interaction leaves recognizable signatures in the sedimentary record. We propose an experimental setup to measure soil erosion and related it with sediment transport using rainfall simulator on a large plots experimental area. Experiments were carried out in fulfilment of the HERASE project, aimed at investigating the seasonal variations of soil erosion in the Oglio basin, an Alpine and Pre-alpine watershed with an area of about 1800 km2, and maximum elevation of 3.538m a.s.l. Namely some rainfall simulation experiments were carried out to assess water erosion under three different scenarios, on in situ plots having same soil and slope, but with different soil coverage and initial moisture condition. In particular, two experiments were carried out on a grassland plot covering an area of 144m2, one considering an undisturbed initial soil moisture condition and the other on a wet soil. The third experiment plot, having the same soil and slope of the previous, and covering an area of 72m2, was set up in the pine forest underwood area. The duration of the three experiments were respectively of 18 minutes, 30 minutes and 30minutes and rainfall intensity was set equal to 70mm/h, accordingly to a 200 return period storm. The plots were properly designed to ensure a correct as possible measure of surface runoff, and transported sediments were collected at 1 minute steps. Suspended sediment, and particle size analysis were carried out ex-post. Our results show a different behaviour of the two analysed plots, in terms of runoff generation and sediment transport. The runoff peak on grassland ranged from 0.018l/s for the undisturbed condition, to 0.09l/s with wet initial condition, while the peak in sediment transport, slowly delayed with respect to the runoff peak, was 1,7 times bigger in wet conditions. In the third experiment, peak runoff was 0.9l/s (10 times bigger than the peak runoff on wet grassland), and constant until the end of simulated rainfall, and took five minutes to run out (concentration time). The analysis on sediment shows an initial slush, where pine needles composed the majority of sediment. Then, after the sediment reached the peak of 350mg/s after about 9 minutes from the beginning of the experiment, it decreased rapidly to an almost constant value of 50mg/s. Within river basins, humans require infrastructures to cover their water needs. The basin scale impacts of these infrastructures are difficult, if not impossible, to estimate and therefore medium to long term effects are only partially considered in planning and management decisions.Available morphodynamic models aim at reproducing river shapes as consequences of changes in sediment transport rates, rather than to capture the dynamics of individual particles within the river network. These models are also often calibrated and validated using sediment transport rates measured in specific locations. These measures are affected by a number of drawbacks: they are expensive, characterised by low accuracy and usually limited to a small range of sediment sizes they focus on.Recent studies on sediment attrition claim the existence of a "universal" relation between particles mass loss due to saltation and specific shape indices (Novák-Szabó et al., 2018). Once the universality of this relationship will be confirmed by extensive testing in different real litho-morpho-climatic settings, it will become possible to link measurable properties of sediments (e.g. size, shape and lithology) to their travel distance (Cassel et al., 2018). This will represent a fundamental step towards a deeper understanding of sediment transport in mountain/piedmont rivers.This research aims at the assessment of the applicability of this relationship to estimate sediment travel distance. In order to test the hypothesis of "universality" of the relation between relative mass loss due to attrition and particle shape, we will compare the shape indices of natural sediment characterized by different litho-morphological settings at different distances from their sources.The selected case study is the Cordevole River basin in North-East Italy. Within this watershed, a small tributary, the Sarzana River, is characterized by the presence of localized outcrops of arenite and metabasalts which, given their very localized sources, will be considered as tracers.The methodology that will be applied is based on the analyses of field data collected using UAVs. In the field, samples of sediments including the mentioned tracers have been collected at different distances from their sources and their size and shape has been estimated using digital image processing tools. These data allowed the assessment of quantitative correlation between shape changes and distance travelled for each of the selected lithologies, which will be presented and discussed. Sediment transport is a key evolution process of rivers and water basins. This process can pose flood hazards to nearby areas. The Eulerian and Lagrangian methods are usually employed to describe sediment transport in mountain rivers. The application of different methods was proposed by scientists to analyze specific aspects of solid transport, however a complete understanding still alludes us. After a brief review of the most common methods, the coupling of three different methods is proposed and tested in order to study sediment dynamics, and its spatial and temporal variability, in mountain rivers. Tracers, painted bed patches, and digital elevation model (DEM) comparisons are used to characterize sediment transport at both a micro-scale short-term and a macro-scale long-term level on a test reach on Caldone River, Italy. Information about travel distance, critical diameters, active width, and morphological evolution was sought. We focused on how water discharge is changing the relationships between different measurement techniques. High discharge events force the channel to behave in a unique way, while low discharge events generate more intrinsic variability. Only measurement technique coupling can overcome this issue.
