Soil erosion monitoring is essential for the ecological evaluation and dynamic monitoring of land resources via remote sensing technology. In this paper, we provide new insights into the existing problems and development directions of traditional models, which are supported by new technologies. An important role is played by remote sensing information acquisition technology in the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of soil erosion, and the data and technical support provided are systematically reviewed. We provide a detailed overview of the research progress associated with empirical statistical models and physically driven process models of soil erosion, and the limitations of their application are also summarized. The preliminary integration of remote sensing data sources with high spatial and temporal resolution and new technologies for soil erosion monitoring enables the high-precision quantitative estimation of sediment transport trajectories, the watershed river network density, and the terrain slope, enhancing the accuracy of erosion factor identification, such as spectral feature recognition from erosion information, gully erosion feature extraction, and vegetation coverage estimation. However, the current erosion models, driven by algorithms and models, are not comprehensive enough, particularly in terms of the spatial feature extraction of erosion information, and there are limitations in the applicability and accurate estimation of such models. Climate change and human activities exert significant influence on the water–sediment relationship in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, comprehending the underlying mechanisms is crucial for the effective management of water and soil resources, as well as integrated watershed management. This research focuses on the Kuye River watershed (KYH_W) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in China, along with its sub-watersheds Wangdaohengtazi (WDHT_SW) and Xinmiaosi (XM_SW). This paper utilizes the Mann–Kendall non-parametric test and the double cumulative curve method to examine the interannual trends of runoff, sediment transport, precipitation, temperature, and NDVI factors. Furthermore, the method of the slope change ratio of cumulative quantity (SCRCQ) is utilized to quantitatively evaluate the impacts and contribution rates of climate change and human activities on water–sediment changes within each watershed. The results are as follows: (1) From 1969 to 2019, the entire watershed experienced a significant decrease in both runoff and sediment transport, with 1997 marking the year of abrupt change. However, following 2012, the KYH_W and WDHT_SW exhibited a noticeable rebound in runoff. (2) Human activities predominantly contribute to the reduction in water and sediment in the watershed. (3) After the abrupt change, between 1998 and 2011, the contribution rates of climate change and human activities to the annual runoff reduction in the entire KYH_W reached 33% and 64%, respectively. Moreover, these rates for sediment transport reduction reached 26% and 74%, respectively. Subsequently, after 2012, the contribution rates of both factors to the increase in watershed runoff reached 29% and 71%, respectively. Factors other than the NDVI, within human activities, played a dominant role in augmenting the watershed's runoff. (4) Prior to 2011, changes in vegetation cover resulting from the Grain for Green Program, as measured by the NDVI, emerged as the primary factor responsible for reduced runoff in the watershed. Conversely, factors other than the NDVI assumed dominance in reducing sediment transport. The SCRCQ method offers a quantitative approach to assessing water–sediment changes. Based on this method, the study further underscores the substantial impacts of climate change and human activities on variations in runoff and sediment transport within the KYH_W in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. Flood events, whose number and intensity are predicted to increase in the Mediterranean region, are difficult to monitor. This causes the number of observations of suspended sediment and total phosphorus concentration (|SS| and |TP|, respectively) during their occurrence to be still scarce. Non-perennial or temporary water bodies, which react more promptly to rainfall events, represent ideal natural observatories. In this study, observations of streamflow, |SS| and |TP|, carried out during some flood events, in the Celone river basin, a temporary river located in south-eastern Italy, are presented. The research examined the correlations between flows, concentrations and loads of sediment and phosphorus and investigated factors that influence sediment and phosphorous dynamics in the river basin. The results show no relationship between the time of the year and the precipitation quantity of each event. The high coefficient of determination of the |SS|–|TP| correlations (R2 = 0.67 on average) proves the importance of soil erosive processes in the delivery of phosphorus to the river. More than 73% of the total suspended sediment load and 83% of total phosphorus load in the period 2010–2011 were transported during the 11 monitored events. In addition to the discharge, |SS| and |TP| also depend on numerous other factors related to land management, such as soil cover and fertilizations. The study, thanks to the improved understanding of the mechanisms governing sediment and phosphorus losses, represents a useful contribution for river basin authorities who have to draw up management plans aimed at preventing eutrophication phenomena and soil fertility reduction. Fluvial discharge is a principal driver of suspended sediment (SS) transport in the Central Himalayan region, Nepal. The study examines the relationship between specific discharge at three hydrometric stations along the main Kali Gandaki (KG) River, four hydrometric stations on its tributaries with rainfalls across the entire basin and its sub basins, in relation to SS transport at a hydropower reservoir. Over the period of 2006–2017, the average monthly rainfall in June (388.39 ± 84.24 mm), July (674.91 ± 105.24 mm), August (571.81 ± 110.77 mm), and September (356.50 ± 104.39 mm) yielded an average of 2.469 ± 1.641, 12.952 ± 4.932, 12.629 ± 7.937, and 4.406 ± 2.363 megatons (Mt) of SS loads, respectively, flowing from the KG catchment into the hill-side dam reservoir. Results indicated that approximately 97% of SS was transported during the monsoon season (June–September). This corresponds to an estimated annual weathering rate in the basin of 4390 tons/km2/year, equivalent to 1.66 mm/year. Notably, both the specific direct runoff discharge and the monsoonal daily erosion rate during major rainfall events (> 30 mm/day) exhibited an upward linear trend with the basin's rainfall. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to examine the retention efficiencies of vegetative filter strips (VFS) on agricultural nonpoint source pollutants. Furthermore, the numerical model VFSMOD was used to predict the VFS performance and linked to a simplified nitrogen transport algorithm. The results indicated that the long filter, low grass spacing, low initial soil water content, and low inflow rate had high VFS retention efficiencies for surface runoff, sediment, and N. However, shallow water table depths (> 1.8 m) had little influence on VFS retention efficiencies, suggesting that shallow WTD (> 1.8 m) need not be considered when constructing VFS. The retention efficiencies varied greatly from 16.55%, 21.15%, 24.70%, 14.57%, 21.86%, and 27.70% to 81.51%, 87.58%, 88.47%, 87.56%, 82.97%, and 89.95% for surface runoff, sediment, TN, NH4+, NO3−, and PN, respectively. The VFSMOD can predict hydrology and sediment transport well for the experimental events with peak outflow rate from VFS greater than 0.0004 m3/s. The good VFSMOD predictions in surface runoff (Ceff = 0.985 for TRF, Ceff = 0.969 for RDR) and sediment (Ceff = 0.998 for MSF, Ceff = 0.960 for SDR) also resulted in good predictions of N (Ceff = 0.913 for MDN). Overall, our study demonstrated that VFSMOD is a useful tool in formulating management schemes for retaining nonpoint source pollutants using VFS, provided local meteorology, rainfall intensity, agricultural fertilization policies, and other influencing factors are considered. The correlation between runoff and sediment challenges ecological preservation and sustainable development in the Yellow River Basin. An understanding of the key factors influencing variations in runoff and sediment transport in crucial river basins is essential for effective soil erosion management within the context of ecological and economic development. The Mann–Kendall test, Pettitt test, and Morlet wavelet analysis were employed in the Wuding River Basin to analyze the trends in runoff and sediment changes from 1960 to 2020. We explored the double cumulative curve method to assess the contribution rates of precipitation and human activities to the variability of runoff and sediment transport. We explored the primary factors driving the changes in runoff and sediment transport through random forest regression analysis. (1) From 1960 to 2020, annual precipitation in the Wuding River Basin increased minimally, while annual runoff and sediment transport decreased strongly with abrupt changes. Abrupt changes in annual runoff and sediment transport occurred in 1971 and 1979, respectively. (2) The relationship between runoff and sediment transport changed in approximately 1972 and 2000. The distribution of monthly runoff became more uniform during Periods II (1973–2001) and III (2002–2020) compared to that during the baseline period (1960–1972, Period I), while sediment transport became increasingly concentrated in the flood season. (3) During Period II, the contribution rates of climate and human activities to runoff and sediment transport were 11.94% and −14.5%, respectively, compared to the baseline period. During Period III, the contribution rates of climate and human activities to runoff and sediment transport were −11.9% and −17.7%, respectively. Human activities substantially reduced runoff and sediment, with greater impacts on sediment reduction. Climate weakly influenced basin sediment transport variations. (4) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and grassland area extent had the greatest impact on runoff, while the NDVI and forest area extent affected sediment transport. The channel sediment transport capacity is an important parameter in soil erosion models, and it determines the proportion of soil erosion that is sent outside the watershed. However, the calculation and judgment methods for the sediment transport capacity of channel are still incomplete, and further research is needed. Therefore, this paper takes Chabagou, a typical watershed in the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau, as an example and, based on the measured hydrological and sediment data collected during rainstorm floods in 1961–1969 at three hydrological stations, Caoping, Shejiagou, and Tuanshangou, studies the sediment transport capacity of channels in a small watershed from the perspective of energy dissipation. Clearly, the sediment transport capacity is better determined by using a single flood and sediment concentration peak process. The discriminant conditions are determined for the sediment concentration to reach sediment transport capacity during the flood rising and falling sections of the sediment process of the small watershed storm flood. When determining sediment transport capacity based on the characteristics of the flood and sediment concentration peak, we find that sediment transport capacity is reached in the flood discharge peak when the flood discharge peak occurs earlier than the sediment concentration peak. When determining sediment transport capacity based on the flow discharge and sediment concentration characteristics of the sediment fall section, we find that when the flood event exhibits a counterclockwise hysteresis curve and a time‐lagged effect occurs, the sediment concentration at that time reaches sediment transport capacity. In this study, the sediment concentration as a function of run‐off amount is logarithmic at different subbasin scales when run‐off reaches its maximum capacity to transport sediment. To develop clean energy hydropower, many dams were built in the Jinsha River Basin in the past thirty years and have significantly altered runoff and sediment transport processes. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of these reservoirs on runoff and sediment transport using data collected in the mainstream of the Jinsha River from the 1960s to 2020, for which the Mann–Kendall trend test method and double cumulative curve method are used to comprehensively judge the variation trends of annual runoff and suspended sediment load (SSL) and reveal the years in which there were credible sudden changes. The linear regression method is used to reveal the variation characteristics of the relationship between annual runoff and SSL before and after the years of abrupt change. The results show that the variations in runoff at Shigu and Panzhihua Stations have significant and relatively obvious increasing trends, respectively, and that 1985 was a sudden change year at Panzhihua Station. The runoff at Xiangjiaba Station increased slightly but not significantly. The variation in SSL shows temporal and spatial differentiation. The variation in sediment discharge at Shigu Station shows an increasing trend with a sudden change in the year 1997. Panzhihua Station shows a trend of increasing before 1998 but significantly decreasing after 1998. The fluctuation of sediment transport at Xiangjiaba Station was significant before 1998, but the trend is unclear. In the period between 1998 and 2020, a significant decreasing trend is observed, especially since 2013, when the mean annual SSL only accounted for 0.61% of its multi-year average. The variations in mean annual sediment concentration and coefficient of incoming sediment (CIS) at the hydrological stations are consistent with the variation trend of sediment transport. The correlation between water and sediment was strong before 2013 but extremely weak thereafter. The two sudden change points for the annual runoff and SSL in the years 1998 and 2013 are consistent with the years when large reservoirs were built in the river basin. The construction of large reservoirs and their large amount of sediment retention are the key reasons for the sudden changes in the water–sediment relationship and the sharp decrease in sediment transport in the downstream reach of the reservoir dam. Sediment-laden meltwater plumes are a common occurrence at the margins of marine-terminating glaciers in Svalbard and are useful proxies for inferring the glacial hydrological system and meltwater runoff. Plumes can influence calving rates, marine biogeochemistry and fjord circulation. However, little is known about how their dynamics will evolve in a warmer, wetter Arctic with increasing melt rates and retreating glacier margins. To determine the temporal magnitude and frequency evolution of sediment-laden meltwater plumes, we manually delineated plume outlines in every available Sentinel-2 image at Blomstrandbreen, Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, between 2016 and 2021. While the frequency of plumes upwelling on the fjord surface remained stable in each melt season, their surface area increased significantly by almost an order of magnitude between the beginning and end of the study period, owing primarily to glacial runoff. This significant change was a result of several large plumes (>2 km2) mapped in 2020 and 2021. The rate of glacier terminus change throughout the study period has little-to-no influence on plume surface area. However, a notable event concerning the terminus retreating into an overdeepening between 2017 and 2018 may have impacted plume magnitude, allowing for larger plume migration across the calving front after 2018. Seasonal supraglacial lakes on Blomstrandbreen are found to be small in both area and volume which have limited influence on plumes surfacing between 2016-2021. Our findings suggest with increased runoff, plumes upwelling at the glacier terminus may increase in size, transporting greater volumes of sediment into the surrounding local marine environment. These changes could be exacerbated by projected increases in glacier mass loss and retreat expected to occur across Svalbard throughout this century and beyond, making the study of plumes and their impacts key to constraining the transport of water and sediment from a terrestrial to a marine environment as demonstrated at Blomstrandbreen. The variation of river hydrologic process can reflect the impact of not only natural factors, but also human activities. The purpose of this study is to reveal the change in the hydrologic regime of the Yellow River and its response to ecological protection. Based on the daily water and sediment observation data of representative gauging stations of the Yellow River, we analyzed the variation of the annual and monthly runoff and suspended sediment load (SSL), as well as monthly mean runoff, suspended sediment transport rate (SSTR), sediment inflow coefficient, and hydrological regime in a decadal average of the gauging stations during the period of 1960–2019. The results showed that the variation of annual runoff and SSL, as well as the monthly mean runoff and SSTR in a decadal average, had a significant decreasing trend in the 1960s–1990s, which was mainly in response to the gradual implementation of ecological protection measures such as afforestation, terrace construction, check dam construction, etc., in the basin. In 2000s and 2010s, the annual runoff increased, while the SSL increased slightly. This was a response to the implementation of new river management measures such as ensuring the ecological water demand of the lower reaches and scouring the riverbed by manually regulated water discharged from the Xiaolangdi Reservoir. At the same time, the monthly mean runoff and SSTR for the flood season (July–October) decreased remarkably while the process curve of the monthly mean discharge and sediment concentration changed from a clockwise loop to a counterclockwise loop in the river reach below the Xiaolangdi dam. This was a comprehensive response to the environmental protection measures in the Yellow River basin, in which the construction and operation of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir played a key role. Alpine rivers have experienced considerable changes in channel morphology over the last century. Natural factors and human disturbance are the main drivers of changes in channel morphology that modify natural sediment and flow regimes at local, catchment, and regional scales. In glaciated catchments, river sediment loads are likely to increase due to increasing snowmelt and glacier melt runoff, facilitated by climate change. Additionally, channel erosion and depositional dynamics and patterns are influenced by sediment delivery from hillslopes and sediment in the forefields of retreating glaciers. In order to reliably assess the magnitudes of the channel-changing processes and their frequencies due to recent climate change, the investigation period needs to be extended to the last century, ideally back to the end of the Little Ice Age. Moreover, a high temporal resolution is required to account for the history of changes in channel morphology and for better detection and interpretation of related processes. The increasing availability of digitised historical aerial images and advancements in digital photogrammetry provide the basis for reconstructing and assessing the long-term evolution of the surface, in terms of both planimetric mapping and the generation of historical digital elevation models (DEMs). The main issue of current studies is the lack of information over a longer period. Therefore, this study contributes to research on fluvial sediment changes by estimating the sediment balance of a main Alpine river (Fagge) in a glaciated catchment (Kaunertal, Austria) over 19 survey periods from 1953 to 2019. Exploiting the potential of historical multi-temporal DEMs combined with recent topographic data, we quantify 66 years of geomorphic change within the active floodplain, including erosion, deposition, and the amounts of mobilised sediment. Our study focuses on a proglacial river that is undergoing a transition phase, resulting from an extensive glacier retreat of approximately 1.8 km. This has led to the formation of new channel networks and an overall negative cumulative sediment balance for the entire study area. We found that high-magnitude meteorological and hydrological events associated with local glacier retreats have a significant impact on the sediment balance. The gauge record indicates an increase in such events, as well as in runoff and probably in sediment transport capacity. Despite this, the sediment supply has declined in the last decade, which can be attributed to a lower contribution of the lateral moraines coupled to the channel network and less sediment sourced from the melting Gepatsch Glacier as evidenced by roches moutonnées exposed in the current/most recent forefield. Nonetheless, we observed significant erosion in the tributary, leading to the transport of sediment downstream. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of the complexity of sediment dynamics in proglacial rivers across various spatial and temporal scales and their relationship to climate change factors. Splash erosion plays a vital role in the loss of eroded materials. Unlike those in slope central areas, laterally ejected splashed materials in slope border areas cannot be replenished easily because slope edges prevent splash erosion particles from entering the slope. Thus, splashed materials in slope border areas are less than those in slope central areas because of the lack of source areas for splash‐eroded materials. However, this phenomenon, called the slope border effect, has received minimal attention by researchers. The partially missing splash erosion induced by the slope border effect on sediment transport was investigated to understand the slope erosion mechanism further in this paper. A modified soil pan divided into four areas, namely, central erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), border erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), splash compensate border area (length = 110 cm, width = 30 cm, depth = 45 cm) and splash collection area (length = 100 cm, width = 2.5 cm, depth = 45 cm) was used to monitor diffusion and splash erosion under simulated rainfall. Results showed that the splash detachment rate increased with the increase in slope but initially decreased and then increased with the increase in rainfall intensity. The runoff rate and diffuse erosion rates for complete splash erosion (SE) treatments were higher than those without partial splash erosion (SEL). Under low rainfall erosive power and runoff transport capacity (e.g., 5° slope and 60 mm h−1), the transported clay in SE treatments was approximately 2% more than that in SEL treatments. This amount changed to more than 2% sand under high rainfall and runoff erosive power. However, the mass fraction accounted for by silt particles in the sediments of the SEL treatments was more than that in the SE treatments. Thus, the partially missing splash erosion can weaken the selective transport ability of runoff for sediments. The effect of missing partial splash erosion on diffuse erosion was enhanced with an increase in erosive power. Environmental loss is primarily caused by soil, water, and nutrient loss, and runoff is associated with nutrient transport and sediment loss. Most existing studies have focused on one influencing factor, namely slope gradient or rainfall intensity, for slope erosion and nutrient loss, but the joint effects of the two factors have rarely been researched. In this context, the impact of slope gradients (0°, 5°, 10°, and 15°) and rainfall intensities (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 mm/h) on soil erosion and nutrient loss on the sloping fields of Miyun Reservoir were explored using the indoor artificial rainfall simulation testing system. Based on the results of the study, the variation of runoff coefficient with slope gradient was not noticeable for rainfall intensities <40 mm/h; however, for rainfall intensities >40 mm/h, the increased range of runoff coefficient doubled, and the increase was the fastest under 0° among the four slope gradients. The slope surface runoff depth and runoff rate showed positive correlations with the rainfall intensity (r = 0.875, p < 0.01) and a negative correlation with the slope gradient. In addition, the cumulative sediment yield was positively related to the slope gradient and rainfall intensity (r > 0.464, p < 0.05). Moreover, the slope surface runoff-associated and sediment-associated loss rates of total nitrogen (TN) rose as the rainfall intensity or slope gradient increased, and significant linear positive correlations were found between the runoff-associated TN loss rate (NLr) and the runoff intensity and between the sediment-associated NLr and the erosion intensity. In addition, there were positive linear correlations between slope runoff-associated or sediment-associated TN loss volumes and rainfall intensity, surface runoff, and sediment loss volumes, which were highly remarkable. The slope gradient had a significant positive correlation with the slope surface runoff-associated TN loss at 0.05 (r = 0.452) and a significant positive correlation with the sediment-associated TN loss at the level of 0.01 (r = 0.591). The rainfall intensity exhibited extremely positive correlations with the slope surface runoff-associated and sediment-associated TN loss at 0.01 (r = 0.717 and 0.629) Slope gradients have less effect on nitrogen loss on sloped fields than rainfall intensity, mainly because rainfall intensity affects runoff depth. Land and water are the most necessary natural resources because the entire life system depends on them. It requires proper management to achieve maximum utilization. When used in conjunction with Arc GIS, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a promising model for simulating the agricultural watershed since it can forecast runoff, sediment and nutrient transport, and erosion under various management scenarios. Furthermore, the model is better at evaluating both the spatial and non-spatial variation of hydrological methods under a very large watershed. This study uses the methodology employed by the SWAT model for the estimation of surface runoff and sediment yield and discusses in detail the setup of the model computer file needed by the model sensitivity analysis parameter and validation area unit. SWAT is a well-known hydrological modeling method used in many hydrologic and environmental simulations. Over 17 years (2005-2021), 212 studies were found from various peer-reviewed scientific publications listed on the SWAT online database (CARD). Applicability studies were divided into five categories: water resources, streamflow, erosion, land-use planning and agricultural settings, climate change scenarios, and model parameterization. Hydrologic phenomena and adaptations in various river basins have been investigated. They mostly examined environmental impacts and preventive techniques to ensure an understanding of effective environmental regulation. Streamflow susceptibility to climatic changes was shown in climate change studies. Modeling streamflow parameters, model modifications, and basin-scale calibrations were investigated. Future simulation aspects such as data sharing and the opportunity for improved future analysis are also discussed. Recent research explored an alternative energy-centred perspective on hydrological processes, extending beyond the classical analysis of the catchment's water balance. Particularly, streamflow and the structure of river networks have been analysed in an energy-centred framework, which allows for the incorporation of two additional physical laws: (1) energy is conserved and (2) entropy of an isolated system cannot decrease (first and second law of thermodynamics). This is helpful for understanding the self-organized geometry of river networks and open-catchment systems in general. Here we expand this perspective, by exploring how hillslope topography and the presence of rill networks control the free-energy balance of surface runoff at the hillslope scale. Special emphasis is on the transitions between laminar-, mixed- and turbulent-flow conditions of surface runoff, as they are associated with kinetic energy dissipation as well as with energy transfer to eroded sediments. Starting with a general thermodynamic framework, in a first step we analyse how typical topographic shapes of hillslopes, representing different morphological stages, control the spatial patterns of potential and kinetic energy of surface runoff and energy dissipation along the flow path during steady states. Interestingly, we find that a distinct maximum in potential energy of surface runoff emerges along the flow path, which separates upslope areas of downslope potential energy growth from downslope areas where potential energy declines. A comparison with associated erosion processes indicates that the location of this maximum depends on the relative influence of diffusive and advective flow and erosion processes. In a next step, we use this framework to analyse the energy balance of surface runoff observed during hillslope-scale rainfall simulation experiments, which provide separate measurements of flow velocities for rill and for sheet flow. To this end, we calibrate the physically based hydrological model Catflow, which distributes total surface runoff between a rill and a sheet flow domain, to these experiments and analyse the spatial patterns of potential energy, kinetic energy and dissipation. This reveals again the existence of a maximum of potential energy in surface runoff as well as a connection to the relative contribution of advective and diffusive processes. In the case of a strong rill flow component, the potential energy maximum is located close to the transition zone, where turbulence or at least mixed flow may emerge. Furthermore, the simulations indicate an almost equal partitioning of kinetic energy into the sheet and the rill flow component. The development of river deltas has considerable economic and ecological benefits; however, owing to sediment interception by dams, river deltas face the risk of shrinking, which is a major environmental challenge of the twenty-first century. The Yellow River contains the highest amount of sediment globally, and accretion and erosion are extremely active in its river delta. The water–sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) of the Yellow River have increased the frequency and unpredictability of the alternation of accretion and erosion areas in the river delta. We studied 25 satellite remote sensing images taken from 1999 to 2019. We used the mean high tide line to calculate the accretion and erosion of the Yellow River delta under different runoff and sediment transport scenarios. WSRS have effectively reversed the erosion of the Yellow River delta that had operated from 2002 to 2019. Runoff and sediment transport during the WSRS period are positively correlated, and both are negatively correlated with erosion area; correlations between variables during the non-WSRS period are not significant. During the WSRS, a sediment and runoff transport ratio greater than 10 kg/m3 results in overall accretion, and a value lower than this results in erosion. In general, during the WSRS period, runoff, sediment transport, and the sediment–runoff ratio jointly control the changes in the accretion area of the river delta. In order to explore the spatial and temporal changes of runoff and sediment in the Taohe River and its driving mechanism, Spearman correlation coefficient method, Mann - Kendell mutation test method and ordered clustering method were used to analyze the changes of runoff and sediment discharge and their driving factors in four hydrological stations along the Taohe River from 1957 to 2016. The results showed that the correlation between runoff and sediment of the four hydrological stations along the Taohe River was significant, and the correlation coefficient was 0.728 - 0.984. The runoff and sediment transport in the interval showed an increasing and decreasing trend. The decrease rate of runoff was 133. 82%--216. 17% higher than that of Xiabagou station, and the decrease rate of sediment transport was 250.49% -4 766. 33% higher than that of Xiabagou station. The mutation year of the Taohe River runoff occurred in 1986, and the maximum decrease was 35%. The water - sediment relationship curves of different periods showed that the sediment discharge of the four stations changed abruptly around 1990, and the maximum reduction before and after the mutation was up to 73%, and the sediment discharge in the river channel decreased significantly. • A novel model integrating hillslope and in-stream sediment processes is developed. • We quantified the effects of soil-water conservation (SWC) on the Loess Plateau. • SWC contributes to 54.4% and 91.9% of the decline in discharge and sediment load. • Sediment reduction effect of hillslope SWC is more lasting compared to that of check dams. Soil erosion and sediment transport processes, which are intimately connected with hydrological processes, strongly affect land surface morphology and earth system dynamics. Over the past 60 years, intensive Soil-Water Conservation (SWC) measures implemented on the Loess Plateau have significantly reduced sediment load and concurrently exacerbated runoff declines, while the quantitative evaluation of the effects of SWC measures remains challenging. This study develops a sediment module which simulates the hillslope and in-stream sediment processes, and then incorporates the module into a Geomorphology-Based Ecohydrological Model (GBEHM). Besides, the model also couples with an explicit representation of different types of SWC measures, including both Hillslope SWC (HSWC) and River-network SWC (RSWC) measures. The newly developed hydro-sediment model is then applied to the Kuye River basin, a typical river basin on the Loess Plateau, and used for quantifying the effects of SWC measures on river discharge and sediment load during 1982–2019. Compared with Period 1 (1982–2000), the river discharge decreased by 48.7% in Period 2 (2001–2019), while the sediment load experienced a more substantial decrease of 95.3% between the two periods. Based on the numerical experiment results, HSWC and RSWC contributed to 25.4% (58 million m3/yr) and 28.9% (66 million m3/yr) of the annual runoff decline, as well as 58.1% (36 million t/yr) and 33.9% (21 million t/yr) of the annual sediment load reduction between the two periods, respectively. Besides, HSWC plays an increasingly important role in sediment reduction in recent years due to check dam silting. Information about suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the stream is vital for sustainability of water conservation and erosion control planning, designing and monitoring. In this research, prediction of SSC has been done using artificial neural network (ANN), support vector regression (SVR) and multi-linear regression (MLR) models. Performance evaluation of developed models has been carried out on the basis of root mean square error (RMSE), correlation coefficient (r), coefficient of efficiency (CE) and pooled average relative error (PARE). Cross-correlation function (CCF) validated that gamma test (GT) is an appropriate tool for the selection of most responsive input variables. On the basis of GT and CCF, GT-6 model was selected as the model with most effective input variables, with the values of gamma, standard error and V-ratio as 0.0643, 0.00583 and 0.2570, respectively. The ANN (6–3-1) model performed better than the other single and double hidden layered ANN models with the values of r, RMSE, CE and PARE as 0.939, 0.0063 g/l, 85.17 and 0.0160, respectively. The performance of the SVR model was found better with the values of r, RMSE, CE and PARE as 0.906, 0.018 g/l, 79.09 and 0001, respectively, but slightly poor than the selected ANN (6–3-1) model. The values of r, RMSE, CE and PARE were found as 0.899, 0.0312 g/l, 65.15 and − 0.0031, respectively, in the case of MLR model. The present study revealed that among the ANN, SVR and MLR models, the ANN model with a single hidden layer is most suitable for observed SSC. Purpose: Gully erosion is one of the major contributors to severe land degradation in the Yuanmou Dry-hot Valley Region, Southwest China. Grass has been proved to have great advantages in gully erosion control. This study aimed to detect the influence of grass basal diameter on change processes of runoff velocity, sediment transport rate, and runoff energy consumption. Materials and methods: A series of scouring tests were conducted based on a field experimental platform under the same flow discharge, and the impacts of different grass basal diameter (d) (0, 17, 43, 70, and 98 mm) on variations of runoff velocity (v), sediment transport capacity (St), and runoff energy consumption (Ec) were explored in this study. Results and discussion: The results showed that values of runoff velocity and sediment transport capacity decreased notably with the increase of grass basal diameter, and two declining power functions can be found (v = 0.689*d^(− 0.106), p < 0.01; St = 0.741–2.228E-11*d^4.701, p < 0.01). As for the spatiotemporal variation, the influence of grass basal diameter on runoff velocity had obvious stage features, and the influence on sediment transport capacity mainly concentrated on spatial variation in the downstream of gully bed (16th–20th m away from gully head). Furthermore, the increasing of grass basal diameter could effectively enhance runoff energy consumption, and a logistic growth function had been found. Finally, the grass basal diameter of 70 mm proved to be the critical grass basal diameter for effectively reducing runoff erosion force and increasing runoff energy consumption in gully beds in this study. Conclusion: These results indicate that the grass growth can effectively reduce runoff erosion force and increase runoff energy consumption, and in general, this function will be enhanced with the improvement of grass basal diameter in gully beds. Rill erosion plays an important role in soil erosion, and studying this process can provide a basis for controlling soil loss on sloping farmland. The objectives of this study were to observe runoff and sediment transport processes during two continuous and two intermittent natural rainfall events and to monitor the changing morphological characteristics of rills within a standard runoff plot of bare soil (20 m length, 5 m width, and slope of 10°) at five successive observation times. We found that the processes of runoff and sediment transport presented a pattern with multiple peaks during continuous rainfall events and with a single or two peaks during intermittent rainfall events. The peak runoff and sediment yield rates exhibited a time-lag phenomenon of 1‒12 min compared with instantaneous rainfall intensity. Rills occurred as strip-shapes, V-shapes, and with a tree-branch-like distribution; their widths were mainly 5–20 cm and their depths 0–10 cm. Compared to our initial rill observation, the mean rill length, width, and depth increased by 227%, 26%, and 6%, respectively, after four subsequent rill observations over a period of almost one month. Side-wall collapse erosion was greater than downcutting erosion on the middle slope (section II; 6.67–13.34 m), while rill depth reached a minimum value on the lower slope (section III; 13.34–20 m). Water erosion, a notorious major threat to food security and ecosystem sustainability, is strongly conditioned by spatial and temporal scale effects. This paper systematically reviews the scale issues in runoff and sediment delivery (SIRSD) as a research field by integrating the traditional review approach and bibliometric analysis. This review summarises SIRSD's roots and the scale effect on runoff and sediment delivery. Then, we provide quantitative insights into the SIRSD domain's development history, thematic structure, geographic distribution, international cooperation, and methodologies. Findings show that: i) SIRSD arises from the gap between the non-linearity of runoff and sediment delivery across scales and our ability to measure it. Point-based and short-term measurements cannot capture the non-linearities from the spatio-temporal heterogeneities and cross-scale interactions of factors or processes. ii) Previous literature provides evidence that the spatial scaling of specific runoff (r), soil erosion (SE), sediment yield (SSY), or sediment delivery ratio (SDR) with drainage area (A) or slope length (L) exhibits contrasting patterns due to distinct mechanisms. Infiltration-excess and saturation-excess processes account for inverse and positive r - A relations, respectively. Interrill-erosion and rill-erosion cause inverse and positive SE-L relations. Hillslope-erosion and channel/bank-erosion explain inverse and positive SSY-A relations. Downstream increasing deposition and additional sediment inputs drive inverse and positive SDR-A relations. These scaling relationships can be nonlinear or complex due to spatial heterogeneities in land use, vegetation, topography, climate, lithology, and soil characteristics. Hence, applying an empirical scaling equation developed from the region with distinct environmental contexts is not recommended. Furthermore, the existing scaling patterns or equations may require updating given global climate and land use change. iii) SIRSD is a complex and multidisciplinary issue investigated by scientists from 93 countries since 1928. International research has substantially facilitated the understanding of SIRSD; still, more collaboration should focus on less-developed countries with high soil and water loss risks and urgent conservation needs, such as those in Africa and South America under cropland expansion. iv) Scale mismatch and scale break have discredited large-scale erosion and sediment assessments. Incorporating gully and bank erosion into modelling, extending the scale range of the L factor, and expanding the sediment scaling scope from watershed to slope may make a difference. Therefore, more research with nested design incorporating multiple scales is necessary for cross-scale analysis and scalable modelling. Suspended-sediment flux at the ocean boundary of the San Francisco Estuary—the Golden Gate—was measured over a tidal cycle following peak watershed runoff from storms to the estuary in two successive years to investigate sediment transport through the estuary. Observations were repeated during low-runoff conditions, for a total of three field campaigns. Boat-based measurements of velocity and acoustic backscatter were used to calculate water and suspended-sediment flux at a location 1 km landward of the Golden Gate. Suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) and salinity data from up-estuary sensors were used to track watershed-sourced sediment plumes through the estuary. Estimates of suspended-sediment load from the watershed and net suspended-sediment flux for one up-estuary subembayment were used to infer in-estuary trapping of sediment. For both post-storm field campaigns, observations at the ocean boundary were conducted on the receding limb of the watershed hydrograph. At the ocean boundary, peak instantaneous suspended-sediment flux was tidally asymmetric and was greater on flood tides than on ebb tides for all three field campaigns, due to higher average SSC in the cross-section on flood tides. Shear-induced sediment resuspension was greater on flood tides and suggests the presence of an erodible pool outside the estuary. The storms in 2016 led to less export of discharge and sediment from the watershed and greater sediment trapping within one up-estuary subembayment compared to that observed in 2017. Results suggest that substantial trapping of watershed sediments occurred during both storm events, likely due to the formation of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) at different locations in the estuary. In many areas of the world, the surface of the earth is changing rapidly. This can affect the partitioning of precipitation into overland flow (OF) and infiltration. OF can reach the stream quickly and thus strongly influences the streamflow response to precipitation. It can also cause surface erosion. However, our knowledge of the changes in OF responses during landscape evolution is still limited. To investigate how hillslope aging effects OF, we studied three plots on four different aged moraines (several decades to ∼13.5 thousand years old) at a silicate and carbonate proglacial area in the Swiss Alps. We used sprinkling experiments to determine OF characteristics (such as the runoff ratio and timing) and used tracers (δ2H and NaCl) to identify the mixing of rainfall and soil water. Sediment concentrations and turbidity measurements provided an estimate of OF‐driven soil erosion rates. The OF ratios were largest (42%) for the oldest moraines because the clay‐rich layer at 20–40 cm below the surface caused saturated OF. However, OF occurred more frequently on the youngest moraines due to the high stone cover. Soil and vegetation development increase the soil water retention capacity and the pre‐event water fractions in OF for the old moraines, but decreased the suspended sediment yield. The results show that OF characteristics and sediment transport change markedly during landscape evolution. This needs to be taken into account when simulating runoff and erosion responses for rapidly changing Alpine areas, and can—together with the outcomes for subsurface flow (see companion paper Maier et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021WR030223)—be used to improve landscape evolution models. Rivers originating in High Mountain Asia are crucial lifelines for one-third of the world’s population. These fragile headwaters are now experiencing amplified climate change, glacier melt, and permafrost thaw. Observational data from 28 headwater basins demonstrate substantial increases in both annual runoff and annual sediment fluxes across the past six decades. The increases are accelerating from the mid-1990s in response to a warmer and wetter climate. The total sediment flux from High Mountain Asia is projected to more than double by 2050 under an extreme climate change scenario. A careful analysis of rainfall-runoff events and patterns of sediment and pollution load to water bodies is crucial for the proper management of agricultural land. This study simultaneously employed the WaTEM/SEDEM long-term erosion model and the HEC-HMS episodic hydrological and erosion model to describe the runoff and sediment load evoked by extreme rainfall events in a small agricultural catchment in Czechia, using the long-term monitoring discharge and water quality episodic data. WaTEM/SEDEM helped to delineate the runoff and sediment critical source areas, subsequently incorporated into HEC-HMS. The acquired results showed that the spatial distribution of land use is a fundamental factor in the protection of watercourses from diffuse pollution sources and the transport and delivery of sediment profoundly depends on the status of crop cover on arable land near a watercourse. Integrating both models, it was shown that the tabulated Curve Number (CN) values as well as the average C-factor values had to be lowered for the majority of the modelled events to match the monitored data. A noticeable role of catchment runoff response most probably played tile drainage, which appeared to profoundly modify the episodic runoff pattern. This study showed a promising approach for the simulation of different rainfall-runoff responses of small agricultural catchments and could be applied for the delineation of areas where soil conservation measures or protective management is of high priority. The results further revealed the obvious need to revise the CN values for tile-drained catchments.

Erosion leading to sedimentation in surface water may disrupt aquatic habitats and deliver sediment‐bound nutrients that contribute to eutrophication. Land use changes causing loss of native vegetation have accelerated already naturally high erosion rates in New Zealand and increased sedimentation in streams and lakes. Sediment‐bound phosphorus (P) makes up 71–79% of the 17–19 t P y−1 delivered from anthropogenic sources to Lake Rotorua in New Zealand. Detainment bunds (DBs) were first implemented in the Lake Rotorua catchment in 2010 as a strategy to address P losses from pastoral agriculture. The bunds are 1.5–2 m high earthen stormwater retention structures constructed across the flow path of targeted low‐order ephemeral streams with the purpose of temporarily ponding runoff on productive pastures. The current DB design protocol recommends a minimum pond volume of 120 m3 ha−1 of contributing catchment with a maximum pond storage capacity of 10 000 m3. No previous study has investigated the ability of DBs to decrease annual suspended sediment (SS) loads leaving pastoral catchments. Annual SS yields delivered to two DBs with 20 ha and 55 ha catchments were 109 and 28 kg SS ha−1, respectively, during this 12‐month study. The DBs retained 1280 kg (59%) and 789 kg (51%) of annual SS loads delivered from the catchments as a result of the bunds' ability to impede stormflow and facilitate soil infiltration and sediment deposition. The results of this study highlight the ability of DBs to decrease SS loads transported from pastures in surface runoff, even during large storm events, and suggests DBs are able to reduce P loading in Lake Rotorua. The article presents a study of the hydrological regime of the Lena and Mackenzie rivers, flowing in the zone of permafrost rocks of different types. Features typical of river mouths in subarctic zone are identified. Sediment transport in both deltas and the export of material into the Laptev and Beaufort seas is studied. Permafrost rock characteristics are given and their changes under the current rise of air temperature are discussed. The Kiryu Experimental Catchment (KEW) is a small (5.99 ha) forest catchment located in Shiga Prefecture, central Japan (34°58′ N, 136°00′ E; www.bluemoon.kais.kyoto-u.ac.jp/kiryu/contents.html). Around this area, forest devastation occurred from ca. 1250 to ca. 150 years ago because of overuse of forest and timbers. Then, hillside forestation was carried out for more than 100 years to prevent soil erosion and support the timber industry, and consequently, most of this area is now covered with plantation forests mainly by Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc. (Japanese cypress) planted around 1960's. This plantation forest is not actively managed. The KEW is one of the leading experimental forests with long‐term monitoring data in Japan. Research in the KEW began in 1967 to elucidate the hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the forested catchment in relation to climate, geology, soil, and vegetation growth. Since then, the long‐term hydrological data of precipitation, runoff and sediment transport are continuously monitoring. In this study, we provide the data and preliminarily discuss the rainfall–runoff patterns and sediment transport through 50 years in the KEW. The annual precipitation and the maximum daily rainfall have been greater than the average over the last decade. In response to the rainfall patterns, the ratio of annual direct runoff to precipitation was also larger in the last decade. The sediment transport in this decade was consequently larger than the preceding decades. Our data presented here suggest that a close relationship exists between the climate condition, rainfall–runoff response, sediment dynamics, as well as a slowly progressing change of forest condition. In recent years, the acceleration of urbanization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) has brought about problems such as soil erosion, ecosystem degradation and decline in ecological service functions. Therefore, this paper selects the Fujiang River Basin (FRB) in Upper Yangtze River (UYR), and analyzes the relationship between runoff erosion power (REP) and sediment transport (ST) on the basis of analyzing the variation characteristics of hydrological elements. Based on SWAT model, a variety of scenarios are set up to quantitatively analyze the impact of different land use changes on runoff and ST and REP in the basin. The results indicated that: (1) The annual precipitation in FRB from 1960 to 2018 did not change significantly, while the annual runoff, annual ST and annual REP decreased significantly. Compared with runoff and runoff depth, the relationship between sediment transport modulus (STM) and REP is the best, especially the power function between them is better than the linear function. (2) The results of the evaluation indexes of the simulation results of the SWAT model based on the measured runoff and sediment data from 2008 to 2018 are pass and above, that is, the simulation results are considered reliable. (3) Under the five scenarios of conversion of sloping farmland to forest, conversion of dry land to paddy field and conversion of grassland to bushland and forest land, the runoff and ST in the basin decreased but the overall range was small. Mass movement erosion on the gully sidewalls is recognized as an important erosion mode and sediment source in hilly and gully watersheds. However, the trigger of mass movement erosion and transport of gravity-detached material remain poorly understood. A series of rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on six loess gully sidewall models, with a height (1 m), three rainfall (60 mm, 48 mm and 24 mm) and two slope gradients (70° and 80°), to quantitatively explore the sensitivity factor and transport mechanisms of mass movement. Results revealed that the accumulation volume and initiation of the mass failure were significantly influenced by rainfall amount. The accumulative volume of failure events was observed to increase in a linear pattern with increasing rainfall amount. The minimum cumulative rainfalls for the initiation of mass failure on the loess gully sidewalls were approximately 43.6, 28.2 and 65.6 mm for short-duration and high-intensity, medium-duration and moderate-intensity and short-duration and moderate-intensity rainfalls, respectively. This implied that the initiation of mass failure was more prone to rainfall events with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity than those with a high intensity and short duration. Rainfall amount and initial slope gradient were the most sensitive elements driving the number and volume of the mass movement erosion. Mass movement erosion raised sediment concentration, but the eroded material was unable to be transported by runoff in a timely manner. Average sediment concentrations at the model outlet increased by 1.9–11.9 times following the occurrence of mass failures compared to those before. A low instantaneous sediment delivery ratio of 0.032 for the mass movement erosion. The experimental findings help comprehend the influence of mass movement erosion on sediment supply on the gully sidewall in the hilly and gully network, i.e. the Loess Plateau. Rainfall plays a crucial role in influencing the loss of agricultural diffuse pollution. The middle Yangtze River region is well-know for its humid climate and numerous agricultural activities. Thus, this study quantitatively analyzed the concentration and distribution of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) load and loss in a major tributary of the middle Yangtze River under different rainfall patterns by using sampling analysis and SWAT model simulation. The total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 −) concentrations were 1.604–3.574 and 0.830–2.556 mg/L, respectively. The total phosphorous (TP) and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) were 2–148 and 2–104 μg/L, respectively. The modeling results demonstrated that higher rainfall intensity led to greater load and loss flux of diffuse pollutant at the outlet. Organic nitrogen (ORGN) is the main nitrogen form transported from the subbasin to the reach, while organic phosphorus (ORGP) and inorganic phosphorus (INORGP) were transported at similar amounts. Under the condition of conventional rainfall, the outlet reaches mainly transported NO 3 −, and ORGN gradually increased when rainstorm events occurred. The ratio of INORGP to ORGP was relatively stable. During extreme rainfall event, rainfall is the dominant element of agricultural diffuse pollution. A strong positive correlation exists between rainfall intensity and pollution loss during rainstorms. Storm rain events were the main source of TN and TP losses. Few storm rain days generated pollutants that accounted for a large proportion of the total loss, and their impact on TP loss was significantly greater than that of TN. The influence of storm rain on TN is mainly the increase in runoff, while TP is sensitive to the runoff and sediment transport promoted by rainfall. By setting different precipitation scenarios, it was confirmed that under the same rainfall amount, short-term storm rain has the most significant impact on the TN load, whereas TP load may be influenced more by the combined effects of rainfall duration and intensity. Landslides, debris flows, and other secondary disasters caused by earthquakes threaten the safety and stability of river basins. Earthquakes occur frequently in Japan. Therefore, it is necessary to study the impact of earthquakes on sediment transport in river basins. In this study, considering the influence of reservoirs, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool-calibration and uncertainty program (SWAT-CUP) was employed to analyze the runoff parameter sensitivity and to optimize the parameters. We manually corrected the sediment transport parameters after earthquake, using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to assess the process of runoff and sediment transport in the Atsuma River basin before and after the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake. The applicability of the SWAT model to runoff simulation in the Atsuma River basin and the changes of sediment transport process after the earthquake were studied. The research results show that the SWAT model can accurately simulate the runoff process in the Atsuma River basin, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) is 0.61 in the calibration period, and is 0.74 in the verification period. The sediment transport increased greatly after the earthquake and it is roughly estimated that the amount of sediment transport per unit rainfall increased from 3.5 tons/mm/year before the earthquake to 6.2 tons/mm/year after the earthquake. We coupled rainfall–runoff and instream water quality models to evaluate total suspended solids (TSS) in Wissahickon Creek, a mid‐sized urban stream near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Using stormwater runoff and instream field data, we calibrated the model at a subdaily scale and focused on storm responses. We demonstrate that treating event mean concentrations as a calibration parameter rather than a fixed input can substantially improve model performance. Urban stormwater TSS concentrations vary widely in time and space and are difficult to represent simply. Suspended and deposited sediment pose independent stressors to stream biota and model results suggest that both currently impair stream health in Wissahickon Creek. Retrofitting existing detention basins to prioritize infiltration reduced instream TSS loads by 20%, suggesting that infiltration mitigates sediment more effectively than detention. Infiltrating stormwater from 30% of the watershed reduced instream TSS loads by 47% and cut the frequency of TSS exceeding 100 mg/L by half. Settled loads and the frequency of high TSS values were reduced by a smaller fraction than suspended loads and duration at high TSS values. A widely distributed network of infiltration‐focused projects is an effective stormwater management strategy to mitigate sediment stress. There is an increasing demand for reliable methods to measure soil loss in order to get a better understanding of sediment movement and to develop process‐based sediment transport models. This study described the design, calibration, and practical application of an instrumented technique that automatically characterized surface flow in situ fields. The instrument consisted of a sampling assembly, a measuring assembly, and a management platform. The special design combined with a volume‐mass conversion relationship was used to determine the exact volume and mass of the sediment‐laden water, thereby allowing the implementation of real‐time measurement and synchronous calculation of runoff rate and sediment concentration. Calibration results showed that normal distributions and an average error of −3.67% were obtained for the target sediment concentrations of 2–1,000 g/L. Compared with the gravimetric method, the average error of the new technique for sediment concentration was 4.82%, and the highest precision was 98.50%. The high repeatability and accuracy of the technique suggest that it can be used with confidence to give satisfactory results in fields. A field experiment under natural rainfall showed that a grass‐covered plot had 18.94% less runoff rate and 42.92% lower sediment concentration than a bare soil plot, illustrating the impact of vegetation cover on reducing soil loss. This uniquely designed instrument provides a new approach to real‐time sediment detection in surface flow. It will be beneficial for rigorously evaluating runoff and sedimentation and for in‐depth research regarding water and soil loss processes. The extreme heat from wildfire alters soil properties and incinerates vegetation, leading to changes in infiltration capacity, ground cover, soil erodibility, and rainfall interception. These changes promote elevated rates of runoff and sediment transport that increase the likelihood of runoff-generated debris flows. Debris flows are most common in the year immediately following wildfire, but temporal changes in the likelihood and magnitude of debris flows following wildfire are not well constrained. In this study, we combine measurements of soil-hydraulic properties with vegetation survey data and numerical modeling to understand how debris-flow threats are likely to change in steep, burned watersheds during the first 3 years of recovery. We focus on documenting recovery following the 2016 Fish Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains, California, and demonstrate how a numerical model can be used to predict temporal changes in debris-flow properties and initiation thresholds. Numerical modeling suggests that the 15-minute intensityduration (ID) threshold for debris flows in post-fire year 1 can vary from 15 to 30 mm/hr, depending on how rainfall is temporally distributed within a storm. Simulations further demonstrate that expected debris-flow volumes would be reduced by more than a factor of three following 1 year of recovery and that the 15-minute rainfall ID threshold would increase from 15 to 30 mm/hr to greater than 60 mm/hr by post-fire year 3. These results provide constraints on debris-flow thresholds within the San Gabriel Mountains and highlight the importance of considering local rainfall characteristics when using numerical models to assess debris-flow and flood potential. Sedimentation and turbidity have effects on habitat suitability in the San Francisco Bay‐Delta (Bay‐Delta), concerning key species in the bay as well as the ability of the delta marshes to keep pace with sea level rise. A daily rainfall runoff and transport model of the Sacramento River Basin of northern California was developed to simulate streamflow and suspended sediment transport to the Bay‐Delta for the next century (water years, WY2010–2099). The model was calibrated to historical streamflow and sediment data and applied using 10 Global Climate Models with two representative concentration pathways (RCP) each for WY1980–2099 from the IPCC 5th Assessment Report. Results indicate average increases in peak streamflow of +58% and +66% for the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 ensembles, respectively, by mid‐century and +62 and +96% by end‐of‐century. Sediment loads increased by +39% and +69% by end‐of‐century. Suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) increased on average by +4.6% and +6.7% for RCP 4.5 and 8.5, respectively, by end‐of‐century. Individual scenario results varied, and statistically significant increasing trends of sediment loads to the Bay‐Delta were found for the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 ensembles and five individual scenarios. Increased suspended sediment loads may have negative effects such as contaminant transport but also have positive effects that help protect against sea level rise, increase turbidity and fish habitat, and sustain wetland habitats in the Bay‐Delta. Land use changes cause changes in the hydrological cycle components and increase or decrease the amount of runoff and erosion in the watershed. Some land use changes become one of the most important problems in some watersheds all over the globe as the case in Ziarat watershed in Golestan province, Iran. Therefore, investigated the impacts of optimal scenario for development of residential areas on soil loss caused by surface runoff and raindrops using the TOPSIS method and WetSpa spatial hydrological distributed model in this study. ArcGIS-based TOPSIS multi-criteria decision making model was used to forman optimal scenario of residential development. WetSpa model inputs consist of digital maps including digital elevation model, land cover and soil texture (with 30 m cell size) and continuous time series of precipitation, evaporation and air temperature over hourly step for 6 years (2007–2013). The accuracy of flow simulations for the calibration period, depending on the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency was 67.02% and the suspended sediment concentration and sediment yield were 63.08% and 72.22%, respectively. According to the evaluation criteria considered in this study and using TOPSIS method, 37 hectares of the total watershed area is proper for residential development, but now the residential area of this watershed is more than 141.3 hectares. The amount of soil loss due to raindrops in the whole reference period was 381.54 kg/s and the amount of soil loss due to surface runoff was 227.715 kg/s. After applying the optimal residential development scenario in the WetSpa calibrated model, the amount of soil loss due to surface runoff and raindrops was compared in the two scenarios of current residential status and optimal residential development scenario. The results showed that the amount of soil loss due to surface runoff decreased significantly, but the soil loss caused by raindrops increased. Finally, as the amount of soil loss caused by surface runoff is significantly reduced compared to the soil loss caused by raindrops, the amount of total soil loss decreased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Documenting hillslope response to hydroclimatic forcing is crucial to our understanding of landscape evolution. The evolution of talus‐pediment sequences (talus flatirons) in arid areas was often linked to climatic cycles, although the physical processes that may account for such a link remain obscure. Our approach is to integrate field measurements, remote sensing of rainfall and modeling to link between storm frequency, runoff, erosion and sediment transport. We present a quantitative hydrometeorological analysis of rainstorms, their geomorphic impact and their potential role in the evolution of hyperarid talus‐pediment slopes in the Negev desert, Israel. Rainstorm properties were defined based on intensity–duration–frequency curves and using a rainfall simulator, artificial rainstorms were executed in the field. Then, the obtained measured experimental results were up‐scaled to the entire slope length using a fully distributed hydrological model. In addition, natural storms and their hydro‐geomorphic impacts were monitored using X‐band radar and time‐lapse cameras. These integrated analyses constrain the rainfall threshold for local runoff generation at rain intensity of 14 to 22 mm h‐1 for a duration of five minutes and provide a high‐resolution characterization of small‐scale runoff‐generating rain cells. The current frequency of such runoff‐producing rainstorms is ~1–3 per year. However, extending this local value into the full extent of hillslope runoff indicates that it occurs only under rainstorms with ≥ 100‐years return interval, or 1% annual exceedance probability. Sheetwash efficiency rises with downslope distance; beyond a threshold distance of ~100 m, runoff during rainstorms with such annual exceedance probability are capable of transporting surface clasts. The erosion efficiency of these discrete rare events highlights their potential importance in shaping the landscape of arid regions. Our results support the hypothesis that a shift in the properties and frequency of extreme events can trigger significant geomorphic transitions in areas that remained hyperarid during the entire Quaternary. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A careful analysis of rainfall-runoff events and patterns of sediment and pollution load to water bodies is crucial for the proper management of agricultural land. This study simultaneously employed the WaTEM/SEDEM long-term erosion model and the HEC-HMS episodic hydrological and erosion model to describe the runoff and sediment load evoked by extreme rainfall events in a small agricultural catchment in Czechia, using the long-term monitoring discharge and water quality episodic data. WaTEM/SEDEM helped to delineate the runoff and sediment critical source areas, subsequently incorporated into HEC-HMS. The acquired results showed that the spatial distribution of land use is a fundamental factor in the protection of watercourses from diffuse pollution sources and the transport and delivery of sediment profoundly depends on the status of crop cover on arable land near a watercourse. Integrating both models, it was shown that the tabulated Curve Number (CN) values as well as the average C-factor values had to be lowered for the majority of the modelled events to match the monitored data. A noticeable role of catchment runoff response most probably played tile drainage, which appeared to profoundly modify the episodic runoff pattern. This study showed a promising approach for the simulation of different rainfall-runoff responses of small agricultural catchments and could be applied for the delineation of areas where soil conservation measures or protective management is of high priority. The article analyses the Kapshagai reservoir impact on the regime and characteristics of the sediment runoff in the Ile River downstream before and after construction of the reservoir in 1970. Along with the calculation of characteristics of sediment runoff, an assessment of the amount of the suspended sediment, which is in the bowl of the reservoir, was shown. The combination of different topographic and climatic conditions results in varied precipitation-runoff relations, which in turn influences hillslope erosion, sediment transport and bedrock incision across mountainous landscapes. The runoff coefficient is a suitable tool to represent precipitation-runoff relations, but the spatial distribution of the runoff coefficient across tectonically active mountains in semi-arid environments has received little attention because of limited data availability. We calculated annual runoff coefficients over 22 years for 26 drainage basins across the semi-arid Qilian Mountains based on: (i) annual discharge records; and (ii) the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset to enhance our understanding of the precipitation-runoff processes. The mean annual runoff coefficients show no obvious spatial trends. When compared to potential controlling factors, mean annual runoff coefficients are highly correlated with mean slope rather than any climatic characteristics (e.g., mean annual precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The slope-dependent runoff coefficient could theoretically have enhanced the topographic control on erosion rates and dampen the influence of precipitation. The enhanced discharge for drainage basins with less precipitation but steep topography in the western Qilian Mountains will enable fluvial incision to keep pace with ongoing uplift caused by the northward growth of the Qilian Mountains. Heavy rainfall is expected to intensify with increasing temperatures, which will likely affect rainfall spatial characteristics. The spatial variability of rainfall can affect streamflow and sediment transport volumes and peaks. Yet, the effect of climate change on the small-scale spatial structure of heavy rainfall and subsequent impacts on hydrology and geomorphology remain largely unexplored. In this study, the sensitivity of the hydro-morphological response to heavy rainfall at the small-scale resolution of minutes and hundreds of metres was investigated. A numerical experiment was conducted in which synthetic rainfall fields representing heavy rainfall events of two types, stratiform and convective, were simulated using a space-time rainfall generator model. The rainfall fields were modified to follow different spatial rainfall scenarios associated with increasing temperatures and used as inputs into a landscape evolution model. The experiment was conducted over a complex topography, a medium-sized (477 km 2) Alpine catchment in central Switzerland. It was found that the responses of the streamflow and sediment yields are highly sensitive to changes in total rainfall volume and to a lesser extent to changes in local peak rainfall intensities. The results highlight that the morphological components are more sensitive to changes in rainfall spatial structure in comparison to the hydrological components. The hydro-morphological features were found to respond more to convective rainfall than stratiform rainfall because of localized runoff and erosion production. It is further shown that assuming heavy rainfall to intensify with increasing temperatures without introducing changes in the rainfall spatial structure might lead to overestimation of future climate impacts on basin hydro-morphology. Water-quality impairment due to excess nutrients entering Lake Rotorua has been recognised since the 1960s. So as to improve water-quality, the 2012 Lake Rotorua Nutrient Management Plan has set a target to reduce phosphorus (P) loads delivered to the lake by 10 t/year from a baseline of ~40 t P/year. Dissolved P and sediment-bound P loss from agriculture have been identified as significant sources of P entering the lake. Storm periods present significant opportunities to mitigate these losses. Detainment bunds (DBs) are a mitigation strategy that could potentially decrease P losses in storm events. A detainment bund is a low earthen dam constructed on productive pasture, which is capable of temporarily ponding large quantities of overland flow delivered by storm-generated ephemeral streams. Prior research on DBs and sedimentation basins serves as a proof of concept for the technology; however, there is no quantitative data available on the capacity of DBs to attenuate contaminants under New Zealand conditions. Quantification of DB performance is essential to the potential implementation of the technology at regional or national scales, and to the modelling of treatment efficacy in nutrient-management software such as OVERSEER®. The present study reports on preliminary data from a DB receiving surface runoff from 19.7 ha within the Lake Rotorua catchment during three contrasting storm events. The results indicated that retaining water in DBs resulted in discharges with decreased volumes of water and decreased concentrations of suspended sediments, dissolved reactive P and total P. Load attenuation related to event size and resulted in decreased loads of sediment (14–91%), dissolved reactive P (19–69%) and total P loads (18–67%) discharged downstream. These preliminary results indicated the potential of this mitigation strategy to decrease loads of sediment and P delivered to Lake Rotorua by surface runoff from pastoral agriculture. The present study investigated the ability of a detainment bund to mitigate sediment and phosphorus losses from pastoral agriculture. The performance of this mitigation strategy, which temporarily ponds storm-generated surface runoff for 48–80 h on productive pasture, has never been quantified. Results of the study suggest that this detainment bund is effective at attenuating suspended sediment and phosphorus, although further research should be conducted before promoting detainment bunds at a wider scale and before land managers make substantial investments. The Atlantic mountains of Spain are suffering a strong landscape change due to a widespread and intensive emigration to urban areas since the 1950s. This process, representative of global developments in an imminent future, is dominated by urban societies and leads to deep landscape changes in which crop fields and grasslands are abandoned and progressively covered by forest and shrubs. These dynamics have caused in turn a decrease in the runoff and a general slowdown of geomorphological processes. The impacts of land cover change have been simultaneous to an irregularity in precipitation and a significant increase of temperatures. With this background, this paper assesses in detail the impact of landscape change occurred over the last decades (twentieth and twenty-first centuries) on the water and sediment yield in the Pisuerga catchment headwaters (Cantabrian Mountains, N Spain). We analyzed the different components of Global Change in a catchment of 233 km2 extent, that has passed from 15 to 2 habitants/km2, from multiple data sources. Evolution of land cover was reconstructed from aerial photographs, remote sensing and other resources. The climatic parameters have been studied through meteorological stations, and the hydrological and sedimentological responses over time are based on available runoff data and sedimentological analysis. Our results show a significant decrease in water and sediment transport mainly driven by vegetation increase occurred in a non-linear way, more intense immediately after abandonment. • A method for 3-D river networks extraction was proposed based on multi remote sensing. • A module for recognizing and retrieving cross section morphology was established. • An improved hydrological model was developed to enhance the simulation performance. Many rivers originating from mountainous areas cannot be adequately measured in the field to obtain sufficient basic data due to the challenging terrain, which poses difficulties for conducting relevant research such as hydrodynamic and sediment transport simulations, fluvial material fluxes. This study utilized a combination of 71 river cross sections extracted from multisource remote sensing data and 34 cross sections measured by hydrological stations between 2010 and 2018 to generate generalized cross sections for all river orders in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. By integrating the generalized cross sections, river surfaces, and traditional DEM river network, a comprehensive 3-D river network has been established to provide a more accurate representation of the morphological changes along the river channel. To tackle the challenge of simulating runoff in data-deficient areas, the Digital Yellow River Integrated Model (DYRIM), a potent distributed hydrological model, was enhanced by incorporating geometric parameters derived from a 3-D river network into almost all input parameters that can be obtained from multi-source remote sensing. This enhancement enabled the model to accurately simulate runoff in representative data-deficient rivers of the Loess Plateau. The Nash Efficiency coefficients for the simulated runoff exhibited improvement of 23% compared to previous studies, surpassing 0.8 for the period between 2010 and 2018. Additionally, the simulated errors for flow velocity and water depth were 7% and 9% respectively. This approach can provide essential data for the simulation of hydrological processes and improving hydrological models, as well as technical methodologies for related research such as sediment transport simulations and river carbon emissions. As one of the largest and most typical continuous karst distribution belts in the world, Southwest China is vulnerable to soil erosion and rocky desertification because of its unique geological conditions and heterogeneous landscapes. Understanding the rainfall-runoff-sediment transport relationships is critical to effectively controlling soil erosion in karst watersheds. This study aims to evaluate the sediment yield variability at different temporal scales (daily, monthly/seasonal, and annual) from 2014 to 2019 and to further identify the rainfall and runoff variables most associated with sediment yield in the selected Mahuangtian (2.26 km2) and Muzhaihe (0.09 km2) karst watersheds. Since rainfall and runoff variables were highly codependent, the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was used to quantify the relative importance of rainfall and runoff variables to sediment yield. The variable importance of the projection (VIP) scores>1 was considered to be the most influential predictor of the PLSR model. Results showed that sediment yield was greatly influenced by rainfall and runoff, which can explain 70% and 85% of the variation of sediment yield in the Mahuangtian and Muzhaihe watersheds, respectively. For rainfall variables, three-day antecedent precipitation (VIP = 1.41) and five-day antecedent precipitation (VIP = 1.28) were the main first-order factors controlling sediment yield in the Mahuangtian watershed. In contrast, the rainfall amount (VIP = 1.35) was the dominant factor influencing sediment yield in the Muzhaihe watershed. For runoff variables, runoff amount, runoff coefficient, and maximum discharge were the primary variables controlling the sediment yield in these two karst watersheds. By partially eliminating the co-dependency of the variables, the PLSR approach can conveniently determine the dominant factors controlling sediment yield in heterogeneous karst watersheds.
