Background: Over 80% of blindness in Kenya is due to curable or preventable causes and 7.5 m Kenyans currently need eye services. Embedding sociodemographic data collection into screening programmes could help identify the groups facing systematic barriers to care. We aimed to determine the sociodemographic characteristics that were associated with access among patients diagnosed with an eye problem and referred for treatment in the Vision Impact Programme, currently operating in Meru County. Method: We used an embedded, pragmatic, cross-sectional design. A list of sociodemographic questions was developed with input from key stakeholders. The final question set included the following domains: age, gender, religion, marital status, disability, education, occupation, income, housing, assets, and health insurance. These were integrated into an app that is used to screen, refer, and check-in (register) participants within a major eye screening programme. We gathered data from 4,240 people who screened positive and were referred to their local outreach treatment clinic. We used logistic regression to identify which groups were facing the greatest barriers to accessing care. Results: A quarter of those screened between April – July 2023 were found to have an eye problem and were referred, however only 46% of these people were able to access care. In our fully adjusted model, at the 0.05 level there were no statistically significant differences in the odds of attendance within the domains of disability, health insurance, housing, income, or religion. Strong evidence (p < 0.001) was found of an association between access and age, gender, and occupation; with males, younger adults, and those working in sales, services and manual jobs the least likely to receive care. Conclusions: Access to essential eye services is low and unequal in Meru, with less than a third of those aged 18–44 receiving the care they need. Purpose: To explore the barriers to the uptake of eye care services in urban and rural communities in Papua New Guinea. Methods: This was a population-based cross-sectional descriptive study and involved multi-stage sampling. Communities were randomly selected from each of the three clusters of Madang District for free eye care outreaches from June to September 2022. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the outreach patients. The study excluded attendees who refused to consent. Responses were rated from 1 (not a barrier) to 10 (a very strong barrier). The p-value significance was set at ≤ 0.05. Results: The majority of the 972 participants (60.2%) were from rural communities. The mean age of participants was 40.82 ± 13.14 years. Almost two-thirds of the participants (61.4%) never had an eye examination before this study was conducted. All the participants reported that time constraint, insufficient income, good vision in the fellow eye, not considering their eye conditions as serious issues and cultural beliefs were personal barriers to accessing eye care services. Provider-related challenges included long waiting periods at eye clinics and fear of procedure complications. There were differences in barriers with respect to the participants' demographic clusters. Conclusion: There are major personal- and service-related barriers to eye care services in Madang. These barriers could be overcome through strategic human resource development, health education, school screening programs, and establishing eye care centres in the communities to improve the uptake of eye care services in Madang and more widely across the country. Objectives: To report ocular manifestations in patients with Fabry disease (FD) from a tertiary eye care center in Türkiye. Materials and Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional study included 30 eyes of 15 patients with FD. The diagnosis of FD was made based on a combination of clinical findings, genetic analysis, and biochemical evaluation. All participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination with special focus on the typical ocular features of FD (cornea verticillata, conjunctival aneurysms, cataract, retinal vessel tortuosity). Results: The mean age was 45±17 years (range: 22-75 years), with a female/male ratio of 2:3. All patients had tortuous conjunctival vessels and 12 patients (80%) had conjunctival aneurysms. Cornea verticillata was present in 10 patients (66.6%), lens opacification in 4 patients (26.6%), and retinal vascular tortuosity in 8 patients (53.3%). All patients had at least two different ocular findings; most (3 heterozygotes/7 hemizygotes) had a combination of corneal verticillata and conjunctival vessel abnormality. The conjunctiva, cornea, and retina were affected together in 5 hemizygous patients (33.3%). One hemizygous patient had all FD-related ocular manifestations in both eyes. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the ocular manifestations of FD in the Turkish population. Although cornea verticillata is considered a hallmark of FD, it was absent in approximately one-third of patients. Moreover, cataract, another well-known feature of FD, was present in only 26.6% of the patients. Conjunctival vascular abnormality alone seems to be quite rare in FD, although it often accompanies other ocular manifestations. Purpose: To study the clinical and tomographic characteristics and associations of keratoconus (KC) patients visiting a tertiary eye care hospital. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study that included 242 newly diagnosed clinical KC patients. Detailed ocular and systemic history, visual complaints, habit of eye rubbing, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), retinoscopy reflex, detailed slit-lamp examination and tomographic findings, and presence of any ocular and systemic associations were documented for the included patients. Severity of KC was further graded into stages 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to the ABCD grading system. Results: The most common visual complaint was blurred vision (82.64%), followed by itching (48.76%), tearing (43.80%), and photophobia (41.32%). A total of 44.62% of patients had the habit of eye rubbing and 4.54% had a family history of KC. Most common clinical signs were scissor reflex (94.21%), Rizutti's sign (77.27%), corneal protrusion (69.83%), and Fleischer ring (67.35%). A total of 14.05% of patients had stage 0, 42.15% had stage 1, 19.83% had stage 2, 18.60% had stage 3, and 5.37% had stage 4 KC. Of these patients, 70.25% had a BSCVA visual acuity of ≥6/12 or better; 26.45% had a BSCVA of ≥6/60 to <6/12; and 3.30% had a BSCVA of <6/60. Ocular allergies, atopy, and asthma were found in 32.32%, 4.96%, and 2.48% cases, respectively. Conclusion: This study gives an overview of the clinical findings of KC cases in western India. Background: Refractive error (RE) represents a common cause of treatable visual impairment, and studying its epidemiology has been a research interest worldwide. Objectives: To investigate the refractive status of Iraqi patients visiting the eye clinic at Fallujah Teaching Hospital and report the results compared to local and global records. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study analyzed the saved patients' records from the Fallujah eye clinic. The prevalence of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism was estimated and analyzed according to gender and age groups in children, adolescents, and adult patients. Results: In children and adolescents under the age of 18 years, the prevalence of emmetropia, myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism was 34.95%, 19.7%, 20.9%, and 24.6%, respectively. In adult subjects, 29.6% were emmetropic, 16.9% were myopic, 20.7% were hyperopic, and 32.8% were astigmatic. A significant association between RE and age was detected (P = 0.001) but not with gender (P = 0.061). Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge of and perceived barriers to providing low vision services among eye care practitioners in Goa. Methods: A pretested and predesigned questionnaire was sent to 72 eye care practitioners, which included the optometrists and ophthalmologists working in Goa, through offline and online (social media like WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.) platforms. Information was collected to understand the barriers that restrict eye care practitioners from providing low vision services. Results: Seventy-two participants took part in this study, of which 26.39% (n=19) were ophthalmologists and 73.61% (n=53) were optometrists. From the practitioner's point of view, lack of awareness (70.83%, n=51) and training (68.06%, n=49) were the major barriers to providing low vision services. Background: The article aims to study the demographics and clinical characteristics of ocular trauma patients presenting to the Eye Casualty Clinic between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 era in Ampang Hospital, Malaysia. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data of patients presented with ocular trauma injury to the Ampang Hospital during the COVID-19 era from 18 March 2020 to 17 September 2020 were retrieved and compared with the similar period of the previous non-COVID-19 era year. Results: Among the total number of 453 patients, 76.82% (n = 348) were predominantly males. The commonest age group was between 21 years old--40 years old (49.45%, n = 224), and the commonest location of ocular trauma injury occurred at the workplace (38.19%, n = 173); welding was the commonest work-related injury (13.83% in 2019; 12.50% in 2020). Injury-to-treatment time was significantly longer during the COVID-19 era, where patients who sought treatment within a day of injury were 27.27% (n = 69) in 2019 and 18.50% (n = 37) in 2020 (P = 0.030). During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with vision worse than 6/60 on presentation were higher at 8% compared with 3.56% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 2.35; 95% CI: 1.01, 5.48; P = 0.047). Similarly, patients with a vision worse than 6/60 post-treatment during the COVID-19 period were significantly higher at 7.00% compared with 1.58% before the COVID-19 pandemic (OR = 4.72; 95% CI: 1.53, 14.62; P = 0.007). Conclusion: The majority of ocular trauma cases in this study population were male adults between 21 years old and 40 years old, and welding was the commonest work-related injury. Purpose: To evaluate presence of perilimbal pigmentation (PLP) in Indian patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from 2019 to 2020 at a tertiary eye care center in Western Maharashtra, India. In this study, 152 cases of VKC were identified. The presence, type, color, and extent of PLP were recorded. The incidence of presence of PLP was calculated. Its correlations with severity and duration of VKC were analyzed using Wilcoxon--Mann--Whitney U test and Chi square test. Results: Of 152 cases, 79.61% were males. Mean age at presentation was 11.4 ± 5.6 years. The characteristic PLP was present in 81 cases (53.29%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 45.03%--61.42%; P < 0.001), of which 15 cases (18.5%) had this pigmentation in all the four quadrants. There was a significant difference between the groups with respect to quadrants involvement in terms of the extent of PLP in clock hours (χ² = 73.85, P < 0.001). However, the extent did not correlate with age (rho = 0.08, P = 0.487), sex (P = 0.115), time since onset in months (rho = 0.03, P = 0.77), duration of VKC and type or color of PLP (P = 0.12). Conclusion: Perilimbal pigmentation seems to be a consistent clinical finding seen in a significant number of VKC cases. Background: Eye care is crucial for maintaining healthy vision. This study aimed to design a determinants assessment instrument related to eye self-care in the student community and evaluate its psychometric properties. Materials and Methods: The present mixed-method cross-sectional study was conducted in two sections using Creswell and Plano Clark methods for instrument development. The study was conducted in Isfahan, Iran, in 2021. The first section (textual analysis and qualitative research) explained and developed the instrument's fundamental items. This section included in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 21 students and eight experts. In the second, the psychometric properties of the designed instrument have been evaluated. Twenty students assessed the instrument's qualitative and quantitative face validity. The instrument's content was measured by computing the content validity ratio and content validity index. In addition, exploratory factor analysis (performed on 251 students) was used to establish construct validity. Internal and test-retest reliability was determined using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), respectively. Results: During face and content validity assessment, a 39-item questionnaire was finalized. Exploratory factor analysis led to the extraction of seven factors, including "perceived self-efficacy and self-regulation," "outcome expectation," "perceived barriers," "motivation," "perceived susceptibility," "normative beliefs," and "perceived severity." The seven extracted factors explained 48.6% of the total variance. Cronbach"s alpha was obtained to be 0.780, indicating good internal consistency, and the ICC for the total score of the questionnaire was 0.892 (95% confidence interval: 0.822-0.944), indicating excellent test-retest reliability. Conclusion: Our developed questionnaire was a valid and reliable instrument for assessing eye care determinants among students, a vulnerable population afflicted with eye defects and disorders. Aim: This study aimed to describe visual performance and the need for vision care services among Finnish older people receiving home care. We evaluated the applicability of the Resident Assessment Instrument of Home Care (RAI HC) in identifying visual impairment (VI) and the need for vision care services among older people. Design: A descriptive quantitative, cross‐sectional design. Methods: Visual impairment and the need for vision care services for older people receiving home care (N = 70) were determined by an optometrist's screening examination and vision assessment by home care workers using the RAI HC instrument. In this study, the definition of visual impairment was visual acuity (VA) <0.63 (logMAR >0.2). Results: According to the distance VA measurements, 41% of the participants showed VI (<0.63) of the better eye, while the RAI HC assessment revealed VI among 36% of the participants. The Kappa value for interrater reliability in classifying VI was 0.137. The optometrist's vision screening examination recognized a previously unknown and unmet need for vision care services more than twice as often as the RAI HC assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Taking care of patients' eyes is an important nursing skill. Nurses must be capable of providing a standard assessment of the eye and vision as well as necessary care such as eye cleaning. Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses typically focus on life-threatening issues while giving little attention to other serious issues. The purpose of this study was to assess predictors of nurses' practice of eye care for patients in ICUs in the West Bank. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with all ICU nurses from West Bank hospitals. The researchers developed a self-administered questionnaire to collect data. Results: One hundred and fifty-two nurses participated in this study. The findings revealed that the mean age of nurses was 31.2 (SD = 7.5) years. The analysis revealed that only 0.7% had a good knowledge level, 7.2% had a fair knowledge level, and 25.7% had a good practice level of eye care for patients in an ICU. Knowledge of patients' eye care in the ICU, as well as an eye care protocol or policy for unconscious patients, was found to be significant predictors of practice (p <.001). Conclusion: The study confirmed that the nurses had poor knowledge and inadequate practice of eye care for patients in the ICU. Also, the study confirmed that a nurse's knowledge of patients' eye care in the ICU and an eye care protocol or policy for unconscious patients were significant predictors of practice. The lack of formal eye screening is the main reason for insufficient eye care utilization in rural China. Cataract, in particular, is increasingly prevalent with the aging population, but the treatment rate is relatively low. Village doctors are the most accessible health care resource for rural residents, receiving few empirical investigations into their role in eye care. This study aims to assess the role of village doctors in residents' uptake of eye screening (vision and cataract screening), the first step of cataract treatment. Data come from a community-based, cross-sectional survey conducted in 35 villages of a county of the Gansu Province, Northwestern China, in 2020. Among 1010 residents aged ≥ 50 and 35 village doctors, the multivariate logistic regression shows that village doctors' age, time spent on public health service, and service population were positively associated with residents' uptake of vision and cataract screening. Village doctors were capable of playing an active role in primary eye health services due to their richer knowledge about cataracts than residents (accuracy rate 86.75% vs. 63.50%, p < 0.001), but less than half of them were willing to undertake eye screening. This study highlights the positive role of village doctors in aging residents' eye screening and the potential role in improving the uptake of eye screening by offering health education. Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of different types of peripheral retinal changes in a myopic population in North India and correlate them with axial length.Methods: This cross-sectional, hospital-based survey included 600 eyes of 300 myopic individuals, aged between 10 and 40 years, attending the outdoor ophthalmology clinic of a tertiary eye care hospital in North India were examined from July 2019 to July 2020. They were divided into mild, moderate, high, and severe myopia according to the spherical equivalent of refraction. Axial length was recorded. Peripheral retinal changes were examined by scleral indentation binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. Standardized findings considered with their fundus location were lattice degeneration, white without pressure and white with pressure, snail-track degenerations, peripheral chorioretinal atrophy, retinal holes, tears, and detachment. The study was approved by the institutional ethics committee, and all participants provided informed consent.Results: Peripheral retinal degenerations were found in almost half (53%) of all myopes included in the study. The most common peripheral retinal degeneration found was lattice degeneration, followed by white without pressure, white with pressure, and chorioretinal atrophy. Most of the peripheral retinal degenerations were seen in the temporal quadrant of the fundus, either superotemporal or inferotemporal. There was a significant positive association between the prevalence of peripheral retinal degeneration with age, increased axial length, and severity of myopia.Conclusion: The results of our study indicate the necessity for careful peripheral fundus examinations of all myopes, irrespective of age and degree of myopia, for early diagnosis and better management of visual-threatening complications like retinal detachment. Purpose: To determine the level of awareness of cataract and glaucoma and identify the determinants of awareness in two rural districts of Telangana, India.Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using the rapid assessment of visual impairment (RAVI) methodology in Khammam and Warangal districts. A validated questionnaire was administered to participants aged 40 years and above to assess the level of awareness of cataract and glaucoma.Results: The awareness questionnaire was administered to 3273 participants of whom 1433 (43.8%) were men, 1985 (60.6%) of them had no education, and 1645 (50.3%) were from Khammam district. In total, 2539/3273 (77.6%; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 76.1- 79.0%) participants reported awareness of cataract. Awareness of cataract was higher in Khammam compared to that in Warangal (84.4% versus 70.6%; P < 0.01). Only 41/3273 (1.25%, 95% CI: 0.90-1.69%) participants were aware of glaucoma. Awareness of glaucoma was also higher in Khammam (1.88% versus 0.61%; P < 0.01). Younger age groups, men, any level of education, and residing in Khammam were factors associated with awareness of cataract. Only having any level of education and residing in Khammam were associated with awareness of glaucoma.Conclusion: Awareness of cataract was high, but awareness of glaucoma was very poor. There is a need to spread awareness about these potentially blinding conditions. Purpose: To describe the variables that may be utilized in the optimization of three-dimensional heads-up surgeries (3D-HUS) for achieving better ergonomics among ophthalmic surgeons.Methods: A.cross-sectional study was conducted at the operating room of a tertiary eye care center, equipped with an ARTEVO 800 3D surgical microscope and display monitor. The parameters noted were monitor height (MH), surgeon eye-to-floor distance (ETFD), surgeon eye-to-monitor distance (ETMD) and viewing tilt (VT) angle. The neck and eye strain of the surgeon and assistant were scored as per Borg's CR-10 scale, before and after surgeries.Results: Thirty (13 right, 17 left) eye surgeries were analyzed. The minimum ETMD was 51 inches (in) and the eye strain reduced with shorter ETMD (within the range 51 inches to 83 inches).The VT and ETFD were higher for right eye surgeries. The optimum MH was between 50 and 55 in. Overall, the neck strain and eye strain were in the range of 0-3 and 0-1, respectively.Conclusion: The various parameters affecting the 3D image quality, neck and eye strain are chair height, VT angle, eye centration, monitor distance, laterality of the eye, and room illumination. Purpose: To study the role of digitally assisted vitreoretinal surgery (DAVS) as a learning and teaching tool compared to that of the standard binocular side-scope of the conventional analog microscope (CAM).Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study conducted at a tertiary eye care center and teaching institute in South India. Postgraduate residents and clinical fellows observed a predecided set of retinal surgical procedures using both DAVS and CAM. A detailed questionnaire was used to compare the participants' subjective scoring of both the platforms in terms of level of comfort, clarity of image and stereopsis, level of understanding, and overall impression.Results: Thirty-six participants, including 20 residents and 16 fellows, took part in this study. DAVS obtained a higher score for all 15 questions compared to CAM and the differences were statistically significant. DAVS obtained a mean score of 4.80 (median: 5) whereas CAM obtained a mean score of 3.14 (median: 3) on a grading scale of 1-5 with regard to the overall experience of surgical viewing through either platform (P < 0.01).Conclusion: DAVS is a better learning and teaching tool compared to the side scope of the CAM from a learner's perspective. Thus, DAVS can help beginners in the field of vitreoretinal surgery obtain a better understanding of the surgical steps prior to the initiation of hands-on training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the iris and angle parameters in psuedoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT).Methods: Patients with PXF or PXG were compared using ASOCT with primary open-angle glaucoma POAG eyes as controls in this noninterventional comparative study conducted at a tertiary eye care center in East India. All angle parameters, TM length, and iris thickness were analyzed from the enhanced depth imaging (EDI) single scans obtained. Quadrant scans were used for the calculation of iris volume using a custom-built in-house software. In particular, the software performs multiple operations including edge detection, connected components, and thresholding to localize and segment the iris. Differences in the iris volume/thickness and TM length in PXF and PXG with POAG were analyzed.Results: A total of 225 eyes were included, which included 75 PXG and 98 PXF cases and 52 POAG with a mean age of 67 ± 9.7 years at presentation. The algorithm repeatability and reproducibility was also established with correlation coefficients more than 99% which was substantiated with Bland-Altman plots. The iris volume (calculated in 197 images of 225 eyes) did not differ significantly in PXF and PXG eyes, although both had significantly greater volume compared to POAG eyes. The iris volume or other angle parameters including TM length did not correlate with clinical variables such as IOP, age, or visual field indices.Conclusion: Iris parameters or TM length do not explain pathogenesis of glaucoma in pseudoexfoliation. Purpose: To understand the factors that explain compliance to anti-glaucoma medication (AGM) in terms of application,purchase, stocking and compliance behaviour.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the outpatient department of an urban tertiary eye care center in South India. Interviews were completed with consenting, consecutive, literate primary glaucoma patients. The components of the questionnaire included duration, application, purchase, stocking and caregiver's role. Self-reported compliance in medication taking was tested for association with rest of the components by Chi-square test and discriminant analysis.Results: A total of 101 patients, aged 34-87 years, were interviewed. Majority (64.4%) were on AGM for more than two years. Early purchase was reported among 44.3% and stocking among 41.2%. Cost was high for income among 28.7%. Majority (91.1%) of them were not aware of side-effects. Fear of blindness was the major factor (68.1%) encouraging regular usage. Half (50.5%) of the patients though, still reported missing medication in the past month. Major reasons cited were relative priority (45.1%) and forgetfulness (35.3%). Self-reported compliance was not different by demographic variables or with responses to questions regarding duration (P = 0.070), application (0.825), time of purchase (0.272), stocking (0.598), and cost perception (0.415).Conclusion: Self-reporting of AGM compliance behaviour did not reflect with responses regarding application, purchase, stocking behaviour or cost perception. Purpose: The aim of this study was to create vision standards for various tasks performed by hairdressers and to assess the spectacle compliance and its impact at work.Methods: The observational cross-sectional study enrolled hairdressers in and around Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was done in three phases: (i) Job profiling from visual task analysis, creating vision standards for various hairdressing tasks and arriving at test protocols; (ii) Comprehensive eye examination, and (iii) Assessment of spectacle compliance and its impact on work. Descriptive analysis using Microsoft Excel and SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics Version 21.0) was performed.Results: There were 305 participants with a mean age of 48 (SD ± 12) years. The visual acuity demand was found to be 6/18 and N15, for distance and near, respectively. Appropriate spectacles were prescribed for 203 (67%) hairdressers. Even with the best possible refractive correction, a few hairdressers did not meet the distance (13) and near (11) visual acuity standard. In all, 54 hairdressers were referred for further examination to a tertiary eye care center for lenticular changes, retinal abnormalities, and glaucoma screening. Among the subjects who were dispensed with spectacles, 181 (86%) were available for telephonic spectacle compliance assessment, and 164 (90%) were compliant with spectacle usage at work. Improved visual ability was reported by 133 (81%) hairdressers at work.Conclusion: This study provides vision standards for hairdressers. From the visual task analysis, hairdressing tasks were found to be visually demanding and hazardous. Purpose: The aim of this study was to report the proportion and patterns of eye diseases observed among infants seen at two rural eye care centers in South India.Methods: A retrospective review of case records of infants seen between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 at two rural secondary eye care centers attached to L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Data were collected regarding their demographic profile, the pattern of eye problems observed, management at the facility itself, and need for referrals.Results: During this period, a total of 3092 children were seen. Among them, 141 were infants (4.56%, 71 boys: 70 girls, median age: 8 months). Twenty-five percent of infants were less than 6 months of age. The most common eye problem was congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (n = 76, 53.90%), followed by conjunctivitis (n = 33, 23.40%), retinopathy of prematurity (n = 4, 2.84%) and strabismus (n = 3, 2.13%). One case each of congenital cataract and suspected retinoblastoma were identified. Majority of the cases (58.8%) belonged to the oculoplastic and orbital surgery sub-specialty. Sixteen percent of the infants (n = 23) had sight-threatening eye problems. Twenty percent (n = 28) were referred to tertiary care hospital for further management.Conclusion: Profile of eye disease in infants in secondary or rural eye care centers ranged from simple to complex, including sight-threatening diseases. While our study concluded that nearly 4/5th of these eye problems were simple and could be managed by a well-trained comprehensive ophthalmologist, 20% of these cases required a referral to a tertiary care center. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine habitual visual acuity (HVA) in a large urban cohort in western India and identify factors associated with poor HVA.Methods: This was a prospective study conducted over 10 days in September 2018 to assess the HVA in individuals attending a 10-day festival in Western India. Participants who volunteered to undergo vision screening and also filled the questionnaire form pertaining to demographic information including their age, gender, address, income, and educational status were included in this study. HVA was recorded with the distance correction that the participants were wearing when they attended the screening. The study evaluated the prevalence of visual acuity 6/6 or <6/6, 6/12, and 6/18 and the factors associated with lower visual acuity.Results: Of the 6300 participants, 1660 (26.3%) were females. Majority of the participants were from urban background (6084, 96.6%) and were of younger age group (18-40 years--3786, 60.1%; 41-60 years--2187, 34.7%; >60 years--327, 5.2%). HVA was recorded as 6/6 both eyes in 4136 (65.6%), at least 6/12 both eyes in 5691 (90.3%), and at least 6/18 both eyes in 5974 (94.8%) individuals. Only 11 patients (0.17%) had VA worse than 6/60 with only 3 patients (0.003%) having bilateral VA <6/60. Older age, female sex, lower education status, and low annual income were significant risk factors for poor HVA.Conclusion: Poor education, lower income, female gender, and old age are significantly associated with poor HVA even in urban Western India despite relatively easy access to affordable eye care facilities. Purpose: To assess awareness regarding Primary Eye Care among (primary healthcare workers) PHCWs and also intended to identify its determinants. Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: All primary healthcare facilities of Tehsil Kallar Syedan, from October 2019 to December 2019. Methods: The calculated sample size was 115. Data was collected from primary health care workers (PHCWs). Data was collected through a structured questionnaire with both open-ended and close-ended questions. Questions were made using simple language and were also translated in Urdu. Questionnaire was adapted from two articles and some questions were made after reading the components of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Blindness (Punjab, Pakistan).Chi-square test of independence was used for finding associations. Results: Fifty-four percent PHCWs had poor awareness regarding primary eye care. Majority of the PHCWs, N = 64 (55.7%) identified just the names of common eye diseases. Cataract was identified with correct treatment by 88% primary healthcare workers. Age, education, designation were significantly associated with awareness of PHCWs. Conclusion: The study concluded that more than half of PHCWs had low awareness regarding PEC. All of them mentioned that there was a need of improving and refreshing their knowledge related to primary eye care. Purpose: Global trends show a high prevalence of refractive errors among children. The prevalence of vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors among school children is increasing and the need for management of other ocular conditions is also reported. This study presents the status of eye health and pattern of daily activities among the school children of a tribal location in Tamil Nadu, South India.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 13 schools of Karumandurai cluster, Salem district in Tamil Nadu, India. A three-phased comprehensive school screening protocol was conducted to understand the prevalence of vision impairment, refractive error, and other ocular conditions along with a survey about the daily activities of the children at school and home.Results: Among the 3655 children screened, the prevalence of vision impairment was found to be 0.62% (n = 23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42-0.94) and prevalence of refractive error was 0.30% (n = 11, 95%CI 0.17-0.54), among which 0.11% (n = 4) were already wearing spectacles. A total of 44 children (1.20%; 95%CI 0.90-1.61) were found to have other ocular problems and among them, 14 (0.38%) had visual acuity less than 20/30 (6/9). Almost 84% of children required surgical or specialty eye care services. Vision impairment was more in children with other ocular conditions compared to refractive errors (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The prevalence of vision impairment and refractive errors in this tribal area was less. Ocular conditions were more prevalent than refractive errors in this tribal region with the majority of children needing specialty or surgical eye care services. Objectives: To assess parents' perceptions about amblyopia and its causes, symptoms, risk factors, treatments, and the importance of follow-up and to evaluate their awareness regarding the consequences and critical complications. Results: Parents or their companions (n = 401) were surveyed, and 52.9% were mothers, 81.8% of mothers and 85.7% of fathers were highly educated (diploma, college or university degree), and 58 (14.5%) had a child who was afflicted with amblyopia. The knowledge subscale (nine items) showed acceptable reliability. Twenty percent of the participants declared having adequate knowledge about amblyopia, but assessment by item showed low percentages of an adequate knowledge level, ranging from 0% for amblyopia causes, 35.9% for definition, and 59.9% for whether amblyopia is a hereditary disease. Thus, the rate of adequate knowledge (Knowledge Score ≥ 8) was 25.9%, and was associated with parents' nationality (p < 0.05) and self-declared knowledge about amblyopia (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed among respondents who had a child with amblyopia. There was a lack of knowledge about basic information and different aspects of the disease, which emphasized the relevance of school-based screening programs and adequate use of trustworthy internet resources using easily understood medical information. Background: Globally, at least 1 billion people have a vision impairment that could have been easily prevented or easily treated. Cataract is the leading preventable and most treatable causes of blindness and bilateral low vision among adults. Despite being the leading cause of preventable and most treatable blindness, the lack of knowledge about the disease and its option of treatment is still a major barrier in reducing the blindness owing to cataract in the developing countries particularly in Ethiopia. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the level of knowledge about cataract and associated factors among adults in Yirgalem Town, Sidama National Regional State, Southern Ethiopia, 2020.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among randomly selected 599 adult's age 18 years and above from May 10-30, 2020. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Data were collected using pre-tested and structured face-to-face interview questionnaires. The collected data were entered to Epi data version 3.1 and then exported to SPSS version 21 for analysis. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associated factors of knowledge about cataract. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) together with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to declare the statistical association between dependent and independent variables.Results: Of the total study participants, 379 (64.7%), [(95% CI: 60.7-68.6%)] of them had good knowledge about cataract. Age (≥40 years) [AOR = 2.29(95% CI 1.18-4.44)], Elementary school completed [AOR = 2.31(95% CI 1.30-4.10)], High school & above [AOR = 5.55(95% CI 2.81-10.89)], governmental and non-governmental employed [AOR = 5.62 (95% CI 2.78-11.38)], Merchant [AOR = 1.72(95% CI 1.03-2.88)], Positive Attitude [AOR = 3.85(95% CI 2.94-6.47)] were positively significantly associated with knowledge about cataract. Whereas, rural residence [AOR = 0.19 (95% CI: 0.12-0.31)] was negatively associated with knowledge about cataract.Conclusions: More than one third of the participants still had poor knowledge about cataract. Background: Viral conjunctivitis is commonly caused by adenoviruses, with a rate of up to 40% of all viral causes. Objective: To show prevalence and clinical features of ocular adenoviral infection at Ibn-Alhaitham teaching eye hospital in Baghdad, Iraq. Patients and Method: In this cross-sectional study, eye swab samples were taken from 638 patients with clinically diagnosed infectious conjunctivitis during the period from August 2019 to February 2020. Samples were processed and tested using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect adenoviral infection. Results: Of 638 patients with infectious conjunctivitis attended to the Ibn Al-Haitham teaching ophthalmic hospital in Baghdad, 113 cases (17.7%) were confirmed to having ocular adenoviral infection with the mean age 27±8.4 years and The highest percentage of those affected in the age group 1-10-year-old (31.9%). Sixty-three were male (55.8%) and 50 were females (44.2%). non-statistically significant difference between unilateral & bilateral involvement. Of total 113 patients with ocular adenoviral infection, 50 (44.2%) patients experienced flu-like illness during or before their ocular complaint, 85 (75.2%), 28 (24.8%) showed conjunctival follicular reaction and conjunctival membrane formation respectively. Only four (3.5%) patients showed no corneal changes during their ocular infection, 39 (34.5%) patients showed mild punctate epithelial keratitis, 54 (47.8%) patients showed significant punctate epithelial keratitis and 16 (14.2 %) patients showed anterior stromal infiltrate. 64 (56.6%) patients developed lymphadenopathy. During follow up, 13 (11.5%) of patients fully recovered within less than 14 days, 69 (61%) patients recovered in 2-4 weeks whereas 31 (27.4%) patients took longer than 4 weeks for a full recovery. Conclusion: Results have demonstrated that adenoviruses are common causative agents for infectious conjunctivitis. Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the demographics and clinical profile of patients with ocular disorders presenting during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown in India.Methods: This cross-sectional hospital-based study included patients presenting between March 23, 2020 and April 19, 2020. All patients who presented to the emergency department were included as cases. The data were collected using an electronic medical record system.Results: Overall, 1,192 patients (mean 42.57 per day) presented to the ocular emergency department and were included for analysis. The median age of the patients was 35 (Interquartile range, IQR: 20-52) years and they were mostly adults (77.85%). The majority of patients were male (62.16%) and presented from the local metropolitan region (56.21%). On triaging based on the ocular disorders at presentation, the majority of the patients were emergency related (65.02%), followed by urgent (8.14%) and routine (26.85%) in nature. The most common emergencies were microbial keratitis (23.74%), followed by corneal trauma (16.39%). There was an increasing trend seen in emergency patients (46.11%; week 1 to 71.78%; week 4) and a decreasing trend seen in routine patients (45%; week1 to 21.20%; week 4). A subset of patients (23.49%) underwent surgery where indicated and the most commonly performed procedures were vitreo-retinal procedures (32.86%) followed by trauma related (31.43%).Conclusion: The enforcement of the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 resulted in a fewer patients presenting to the hospital. The majority of them presented from the local metropolitan region and the common emergencies were microbial keratitis and corneal trauma. Purpose: To study the correlation between thyroid eye disease (TED) with type-2 diabetes mellitus.Methods: A cross-sectional cohort study was conducted from Jan 2018 to Dec 2018, in patients presenting with thyroid eye disease to orbit and oculoplasty clinic of a tertiary eye care hospital. A total of 105 patients were included in the study. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic evaluation and thyroid eye disease workup. Patients were categorized into mild, moderate, and severe/sight-threatening TED based on EUGOGO classification. Systemic history of diabetes was noted. RBS was done in all patients.Results: Mild disease was noted 61 patients of which 11 were diabetics, moderate in 26 patients (8 diabetics), and severe disease in 18 patients (14 diabetics). All patients were treated accordingly. Among the TED patients, the percentage of diabetic patients was noted to be in increasing order toward the severity spectrum of TED. The prevalence of severe TED was found to be much higher in diabetic patients accounting upto 77.77% of 18 patients. A statistically significant correlation was noted (P = 0.014) between severe TED and type-2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, early onset of thyroid eye disease was noted in type-2 diabetes patients. Even though female preponderance was noted, severe TED was more in men (66.6%).Conclusion: An autoimmune etiology for the association of thyroid and type-1diabetes has been well established. This study shows that type-2 diabetic patients can have more severity in the clinical presentation of TED. Therefore, the presence of type-2 DM in patients with TED can be a predictive factor for onset, progression, and severity of disease. Hence, a high concern of interest among treating ophthalmologists and endocrinologists regarding this entity would help in early prediction and decreased morbidity among such patients. Purpose. To evaluate parent knowledge of screening and genetic testing for retinoblastoma and its potential correlation with demographics, clinical features, and socioeconomical factors. Methods. It was a cross-sectional study conducted at the ocular oncology unit of a tertiary ophthalmic center in Southern China. A face-to-face interview was administered to parents of retinoblastoma children during hospitalization. Parent knowledge was assessed using the sum score of a 7-item questionnaire. Demographics and socioeconomic status were collected from the interview, and clinical data were retrieved from the medical records. Results. A total of 126 parents of retinoblastoma children were included. Parents accurately answered 66.7% to 84.9% of each item in the questionnaire. Only 37 (29.4%) parents correctly answered all 7 questions. Parent knowledge was positively correlated with education, but it was not associated with patients' laterality, sex, or household income. Physicians and the Internet were the major sources of parental health-related information. During the median follow-up of 492 days, 13 (61.9%) of 21 patients in the full-score group without genetic testing at baseline actually conducted testing during follow-up compared to 29 of 67 (43.3%) in the less-than-full-score group (P = 0.136). Conclusion. Overall parent knowledge about retinoblastoma screening and genetic testing was moderate. Higher education was associated with greater parent knowledge. Purpose: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of smartphone-based nonmydriatic (NM) retinal camera in the detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and sight-threatening DR (STDR) in a tertiary eye care facility.Methods: Patients with diabetes underwent retinal photography with a smartphone-based NM fundus camera before mydriasis and standard 7-field fundus photography with a desktop mydriatic fundus camera after mydriasis. DR was graded using the international clinical classification of diabetic retinopathy system by two retinal expert ophthalmologists masked to each other and to the patient's identity. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) to detect DR and STDR by NM retinal imaging were assessed.Results: 245 people had gradable images in one or both eyes. DR and STDR were detected in 45.3% and 24.5%, respectively using NM camera, and in 57.6% and 28.6%, respectively using mydriatic camera. The sensitivity and specificity to detect any DR by NM camera was 75.2% (95% confidence interval (CI) 68.1-82.3) and 95.2% (95%CI 91.1-99.3). For STDR the values were 82.9% (95% CI 74.0-91.7) and 98.9% (95% CI 97.3-100), respectively. The PPV to detect any DR was 95.5% (95% CI 89.8-98.5) and NPV was 73.9% (95% CI 66.4-81.3); PPV for STDR detection was 96.7% (95% CI 92.1-100)) and NPV was 93.5% (95% CI 90.0-97.1).Conclusion: Smartphone-based NM retinal camera had fairly high sensitivity and specificity for detection of DR and STDR in this clinic-based study. Background. For so long, corneal diseases have been known as one of the leading causes to blindness in the global. This blindness might be due to failure to accept the corneal transplantation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and the root challenges for corneal transplantation acceptance at the University of Gondar tertiary eye care and training center, Ethiopia. Methods. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients who had an indication for corneal transplantation at the University of Gondar tertiary eye care and training center since January 1, 2017, up to October 30, 2018. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data and entered into Epi-Info 7 software and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Simple logistic regression was used to identify the associated factors of corneal transplantation acceptance. Associations between outcome and exposure variables were expressed by the adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval and p value <0.05. Result. A total of 116 patients with a mean age of 51 (±21) years participated in the study. The overall acceptance level of corneal transplantation was only 38.8% (95% CI: 29.93, 47.66). Patients with poor knowledge [AOR = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.90, 6.48] and an unfavorable attitude [AOR = 6.33; 95% CI: 2.42, 16.54] were significantly associated with the acceptance of corneal transplantation. Conclusion. The study revealed that the corneal transplantation acceptance level was very low. Hence, the government and other concerned stakeholders should give due emphasis to the awareness creation and behavior change communication strategies to increase the acceptance level of corneal transplantation. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide normative database for subfoveal choroidal thickness in Indian eyes using swept-source optical coherence tomography.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based at a tertiary eye care center in Northern India. Two hundred and thirty eight eyes of 119 healthy subjects were examined in terms of axial length, spherical equivalent, and choroidal thickness. Inclusion criteria included age 19-60 years, no retinal or choroidal disorder, and patients with clear media and good fixation. Patients with high hypermetropia (>4 D) or myopia (>6 D) or any systemic disease likely to affect choroidal thickness were excluded. Twelve radial line scans were obtained centered on the fovea that were used to calculate choroidal and retinal thickness in 9 early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) zones.Results: The mean age of all the subjects was 28.70 ± 11.28 years; mean axial length was 23.63 ± 1.96 mm, and mean spherical equivalent was - 0.92 ± 3.08 D. The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 299.10 ± 131.2 μ and mean foveal thickness was 239.92 ± 48.16 μ. A negative correlation was found between subfoveal choroidal thickness and age (r = -0.0961, P = 0.1392) and axial length (r = -0.3166, P < 0.001). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between subfoveal choroidal thickness and refractive error (r = 0.2393, P = 0.0002).Conclusion: This study provides normative database for subfoveal choroidal thickness and foveal thickness using swept-source optical coherence tomography. Purpose: To study the frequency and intraoperative difficulties associated with pseudoexfoliation (PXF) syndrome at a tertiary eye care center in a rural central India.Methods: This study included patients scheduled for cataract surgery who were diagnosed with PXF syndrome. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation, including slit-lamp examination, tonometry, gonioscopy, and ophthalmoscopy before the surgery. Cataract surgeries were performed by a single surgeon who reported the intraoperative difficulties.Results: In total, 1022 phakic eyes of 1823 patients were evaluated, 226 of whom (22.1%) were diagnosed with PXF syndrome. Most eyes (n = 81, 35.8%) with PXF syndrome were ≥81 years old. Eighty-six eyes (38.1%) had bilateral involvement, whereas 70 (30.9%) had right or left eye involvement. Further, PXF material was distributed on the iris, pupil, and lens in 70 eyes (30.9%) and on the pupillary margin in 36 eyes (15.9%). The mean pupillary dilation was 5.1 (±1.4) mm in patients with PXF syndrome compared with 7.2 (±1.6) mm in those without it (P = 0.03). Grade VI cataract was observed in 93 eyes (41.2%) and hypermature cataract was the most commonly observed cataract stage. Twenty-one eyes (9.3%) had increased intraocular pressure. Intraoperative difficulties were encountered in 62 eyes (27.4%) with poor pupillary dilation being the most common problem (32 eyes, 14.2%), followed by zonular dehiscence (18 eyes, 8%).Conclusion: This hospital-based study showed that PXF syndrome is common in Indian rural population and that the intraoperative complication rate in these patients is high. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is common metabolic disorder that is characterized by increased circulating blood glucose levels. Long-term, continuous hyperglycemia leads to vasculature-related disorders, including those affecting the eyes, such as retinopathy. The objective of this study was to assess the awareness of diabetic complications, specifically diabetic retinopathy, among diabetic patients attending the Jeddah Eye Hospital.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study targeting the outpatient clinics of Jeddah Eye Hospital for a period of 2 months. A total of 380 participants were randomly selected based on sample size calculations. A closed-ended questionnaire, generated after an extensive literature review, was distributed among the selected individuals. The questions focused on the participants’ clinical status of DM, socio-demographic characteristics, awareness of eye complications secondary to DM, eye screening, and eye care-seeking behavior.Results: The mean age of the patients was 58.3 (standard deviation 10.9) years, and 52.4% of patients were female. The majority (89.7%) of participants had type II DM (T2DM). The level of awareness was satisfactory (92.4%); however, only 10.5% of participants knew the recommended frequency for eye check-ups. The level of awareness of related complications was directly influenced by education level, source of patient information, place of residence, and frequency of follow-up visits.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that although the awareness of diabetes-related eye complications was satisfactory in the patient population, eye care-seeking behavior and frequency of eye check-ups were not optimal. Purpose: The aim of the study was to present the level of knowledge and practice patterns regarding exposure keratopathy in mechanically ventilated patients among Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses in Chhattisgarh state.Methods: A previously validated semi-structured questionnaire was administered in the ICU of six multispecialty hospitals in Chhattisgarh in 2014-2015. Demography included age, gender, level of education, and months of working in ICU. Most of the questions dealt with frequency of eyelid closure assessment, frequency of cleaning of eyes with saline gauze, using a protocol-based approach for eye care, and documentation of ophthalmic complications. Common barriers to delivery of eye care such as shortage of time and too much writing tasks were also inquired.Results: Our study included 120 nurses. They worked for mean 22.9 ± 17.8 months in ICU. Knowledge about high risk of exposure keratopathy in ventilated patient was present in 93% (78%; 95% confidence interval [CI]) nurses. Only six nurses (5%) followed a strict protocol for eye care, 52 nurses (43%) checked for eyelid closure in the ventilated patients, and 58 (48%) cleaned the eyes frequently. Those who were aware of exposure keratopathy checked eyelid closure (73% vs. 48%) and cleaned eyes with saline gauze more frequently (24% vs. 4%). Nurses in cardiac ICU were significantly lesser aware of exposure complications compared to medical ICU nurses (40% reduction in awareness, 95% CI = 0.37-0.98, P = 0.04).Conclusion: Although there is high awareness, practice patterns of ICU nurses were less than desired. Background. Vision is critical in the development and performance of children. Factual knowledge of eye health is important for preventive and promotive eye health. Objectives. To identify eye health myths and misconceptions that are considered true in a population of Nigerian school children, with the aim of prioritizing eye health messages. Material and methods. In a cross-sectional survey, self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain pupils' views, which were elicited using statements presented as 22 ocular health myths/misconceptions and three facts in two selected secondary schools in Enugu state, Nigeria in October 2014. Frequency counts and percentages were generated using SPSS v18. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The sample comprised 404 males (48.5%) and 429 females (51.5%), age range 10-17 years, median 13-14 years; IQR -6). More pupils in the senior classes had previously listened to eye health talks. The most common beliefs concerned the statements "staying close to the television set will damage vision" 782 (93.9%), and "reading in dim light will damage vision" 758 (90.8%). The least commonly-held misconception was "children do not need regular eye checks" 119 (14.3%). The greatest amount of uncertainty concerned the statements "short-sightedness is worse than long-sightedness" 421 (51%), and "crossed-eye disorders cannot be corrected in children" 383 (46%). Conclusions. The majority of the children do not have information on eye health. Despite the persistence of these myths and misconceptions, this study has demonstrated that the children had a reasonable level of knowledge in terms of safe eye care practices. Objective. To measure the prevalence of amblyopia and amblyogenic factors among primary school children and to evaluate distance visual acuity (VA) as a screening test to detect amblyopia and define its cutoff value. Subjects and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on primary school children in two schools in Central Cairo. Children underwent assessment of visual acuity using Landolt broken ring. Comprehensive ophthalmologic examination was performed for amblyopia suspects at the Ophthalmology Department of Ain Shams University Hospitals, including reassessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the same chart. Results. A total of 352 children were examined. Reduced screening VA (amblyopia suspect) was detected in 47 subjects (13.35%) proved amblyopia after comprehensive examination was 1.98% (7 cases). Refractive errors (REs) were present in all suspected and proved amblyopia cases (100%) but was only present in 11.6% of nonamblyopic students (P<0.05). The prevalence of hyperopia in the whole sample was 3.6%, and was 27.6% in subjects with RE. Thirty percent of hyperopic eyes were amblyopic. The prevalence of myopia was 9.3% of the whole sample and 70% of students with RE. Only 9% of myopic eyes were amblyopic. Mild to moderate amblyopia (VA better than 0.2log MAR) was 42.9%, while severe amblyopia represented 57.1%. Conclusion. This study emphasizes the importance of school-based eye care system targeting the detection of amblyopia by application of a fast screening distance VA test with a cutoff value of high sensitivity at log MAR 0.539 (Snellen′s VA equivalent 6/18). Background: Visual impairment is a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa, affecting nearly 5% of the population. Efforts to combat avoidable causes have been hampered by weak health systems and little evidence exists to suggest what interventions may be effective to improve the situation. Despite this, there are calls to promote some specific interventions, one of which being the closer integration of eye health services into health systems, often focusing on training primary health workers to deliver basic eye health services. This study seeks to understand how eye health services are delivered by primary health workers who have received training and what constraints remain to effective service provision.Methods: This was a qualitative investigation into the experiences of 20 primary health workers trained in primary eye care and eight key informants working within specialist eye health services or regional and district health management positions in two districts in Tanzania.Results: Despite feeling confident in their own eye care skills, most primary health workers felt constrained in the services they could provide to their communities by insufficient resources needed for diagnosis and treatment, and by lack of systematic supportive supervision to their work. Specialist ophthalmic staff were aware of this issue, although for the most part they felt it was not within their capacity to remedy and that it fell within the remit of general health managers. Many participants discussed the low support to eye health from the national government, evidenced through the lack of dedicated funding to the area and traditional reliance on outside funds including international charities.Conclusions: Although training of primary health workers is useful, it is recognised that is not sufficient to address the burden of eye health disease present in rural communities in Tanzania. It is likely that broader engagement with the general health system, and most likely with the private sector, will be necessary to improve the coverage of eye health care to remote and poor communities such as those in Morogoro. Background: We needed to validate and calibrate our portable acuity screening tools so amblyopia could be detected quickly and effectively at school entry.Methods: Spiral-bound flip cards and download pdf surround HOTV acuity test box with critical lines were combined with a matching card. Amblyopic patients performed critical line, then threshold acuity which was then compared to patched E-ETDRS acuity. 5 normal subjects wore Bangerter foil goggles to simulate blur for comparative validation.Results: The 31 treated amblyopic eyes showed: logMAR HOTV = 0.97(logMAR E-ETDRS)-0.04 r2 = 0.88. All but two (6%) fell less than 2 lines difference. The five showed logMAR HOTV = 1.09 ((logMAR E-ETDRS) + .15 r2 = 0.63. The critical-line, test box was 98% efficient at screening within one line of 20/40.Conclusion: These tools reliably detected acuity in treated amblyopic patients and Bangerter blurred normal subjects. These free and affordable tools provide sensitive screening for amblyopia in children from public, private and home schools. Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the impact of the eye care programme on cataract blindness and cataract surgical services in Sokoto, Nigeria over a 12 year period 2005–2016. Methods: Data from the 2005 population based cross-sectional study of blindness in Sokoto state was re-analysed to obtain baseline estimates of the prevalence of cataract blindness and cataract surgical coverage for persons 50 years and over in Wurno health zone. A population based survey of a representative sample of persons 50 years and over in Wurno health zone was conducted in July 2016. Data on eye health workforce, infrastructure and cataract surgical services between 2005 and 2016 were analysed from relevant documents. Results: In 2005 the unadjusted prevalence of bilateral cataract blindness (<3/60) in people 50 years and over in Wurno health zone was 5.6% (95% CI: 3.1, 10.1). By 2016 this had fallen to 2.1% (95% CI 1.5%, 2.7%), with the age-sex adjusted prevalence being 1.9% (95% CI 1.3%, 2.5%). The CSC for persons with visual acuity <3/60, <6/60, <6/18 for Wurno health zone was 9.1%, 7.1% and 5.5% respectively in 2005 and this had increased to 67.3%, 62.1% and 34.7% respectively in 2016. The CSR in Sokoto state increased from 272 (1005 operations) in 2006, to 596 (2799 operations) in 2014. In the 2005 survey, couching (a procedure used by traditional practitioners to dislocate the lens into the vitreous cavity) accounted for 87.5% of all cataract interventions, compared to 45.8% in the 2016 survey participants. In 2016 18% of eyes having a cataract operation with IOL implantation had a presenting visual acuity of <6/60 (poor outcome) with the main causes being postoperative complications (53%) and uncorrected refractive error (29%). Conclusion: Between 2005 and 2016 there was a doubling in cataract surgical rate, a 7 times increase in cataract surgical coverage (<3/60), and a decrease in cataract blindness and the proportion of eyes being couched. However, there remains a high prevalence of un-operated cataract in 2016 indicating a need to further improve access to affordable and good quality cataract surgical services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between tear meniscus height (TMH) values measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the severity of epiphora (Munk scoring).Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, consecutive patients with epiphora were studied. All patients underwent Munk epiphora scoring, lacrimal syringing, and detailed ophthalmological examination. Using OCT, the TMH (i.e., the line intersecting level of tear meniscus and lower eyelid) values were calculated. The relationship between TMH and epiphora was analyzed by comparing TMH values across various grades of epiphora using Kruskal-Wallis test.Results: A total of 38 patients (56 eyes) were included. The mean age was 55 ± 11.1 years with equal distribution of males and females. The mean TMH values were 238 ± 141.3, 396.6 ± 159.5, 707.1 ± 288.8, and 809.5 ± 419.4 μm in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 of epiphora, respectively. A significant difference in TMH was found among grades 2, 3, and 4 (P = 0.0007). On post hoc analysis, only grade 2 was significantly different from grades 3 and 4 (P = 0.0008 and P = 0.002 respectively), but grades 3 and 4 were comparable (P = 0.62).Conclusion: Levels of TMH were found to increase with increasing severity of epiphora. Purpose: The aims of this study were to determine the acceptability levels of different styles of the doctors' dress and the expectations from the initial phases of physician-patient encounter.Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional descriptive type using the survey methodology. A survey based on a five-point questionnaire was performed on all consecutive patients or their caregivers, aged ≥15, visiting the ophthalmic plastics outpatient clinics at a tertiary eye care institute. The participants were shown three sets of photographs and were required to answer a questionnaire which consisted of five questions. Data collected include participant demographics and their preferences with regards to the physician's attire and initial communications.Results: A total of 300 consecutive responses were analyzed. The mean age of the participants was 37.2 years. Among the participants, 87.6% (263/300) and 90.3% (271/300) preferred a white coat for the male and female physicians, respectively (P < 0.001). The most common second preference was scrubs for both the males and female physicians. 92.3% (277/300) preferred the attire to have an identification display. The overwhelming majority of respondents (95.6%, 287/300) preferred the physicians to address them by their name and 98.6% (296/300) liked if their physicians smiled while addressing them.Conclusions: White coat was the main preferred attire among respondents. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of visual impairment (VI) due to uncorrected refractive error (URE) and to assess the barriers to utilization of services in the adult urban population of Delhi.Materials and Methods: A population-based rapid assessment of VI was conducted among people aged 40 years and above in 24 randomly selected clusters of East Delhi district. Presenting visual acuity (PVA) was assessed in each eye using Snellen's "E" chart. Pinhole examination was done if PVA was <20/60 in either eye and ocular examination to ascertain the cause of VI. Barriers to utilization of services for refractive error were recorded with questionnaires.Results: Of 2421 individuals enumerated, 2331 (96%) individuals were examined. Females were 50.7% among them. The mean age of all examined subjects was 51.32 ± 10.5 years (standard deviation). VI in either eye due to URE was present in 275 individuals (11.8%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.5-13.1). URE was identified as the most common cause (53.4%) of VI. The overall prevalence of VI due to URE in the study population was 6.1% (95% CI: 5.1-7.0). The elder population as well as females were more likely to have VI due to URE (odds ratio [OR] = 12.3; P < 0.001 and OR = 1.5; P < 0.02). Lack of felt need was the most common reported barrier (31.5%).Conclusions: The prevalence of VI due to URE among the urban adult population of Delhi is still high despite the availability of abundant eye care facilities. The majority of reported barriers are related to human behavior and attitude toward the refractive error. Purpose: Educating patients about their diagnosis and proposed management is integral part of healthcare. Often patient noncompliance is due to a lack of knowledge that could result in irreversible ocular damage. In an era where access to information is virtually unlimited, an understanding of the preferred method of eye care education among patients is required for greater effectiveness in lowering morbidity and mortality of diseases. Subjects and Methods: Patients visiting the ophthalmology clinics of a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were interviewed. This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2014 and March 2015. A representative sample of 200 patients was enrolled. Close-ended questionnaire covering current and client preferred health promotion methods were used to collect clients' response. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Out of the 200 participants, 110 (55%) were males. The majority (n = 154; 77%) listed an ophthalmologist as their current primary source of information regarding their eye condition. Approximately half of the participants (n = 95; 48%) were keen to be educated regarding the causes of the eye disease. The top four educational methods preferred by patients were one-on-one session with an eye care provider (n = 116; 58%), a group session with an eye care provider (n = 30; 15%), an application on a smartphone (n = 53; 27%), video lectures on eye health and diseases (n = 8; 4%). Background: There is very little published work on the visual needs of homeless people. This paper is the first study to investigate the visual needs of homeless people in the UK. Although similar work has been done in other countries, this study is unique because the United Kingdom is the only country with a National Health Service which provides free healthcare at the point of access. This study analysed the refractive status of the sample used, determined the demographics of homeless people seeking eye care and established if there is a need for community eye health with access to free spectacle correction in East London.Methods: This retrospective case study analysed the clinical records of 1,141 homeless people using the Vision Care for Homeless People services at one of their clinics in East London. All eye examinations were carried out by qualified optometrists and, where appropriate, spectacles were dispensed to patients. Data captured included age, gender, ethnicity and refractive error. Results were analysed using two-sample t-tests with Excel and Minitab.Results: Demographics of age, gender and ethnicity are described. Spherical equivalents (SE) were calculated from prescription data available for 841 clinic users. Emmetropia was defined as SE-0.50DS to +1DS, myopia as SE < -0.50DS, and hyperopia as SE > +1DS. The majority of clinic users were male (79.2 %, n = 923). Approximately 80 % (n = 583) of clinic users were white, 10 % (n = 72) were 'black', 4 % (n = 29) 'Asian' and the remaining 5.6 % (n = 40) were of 'mixed ethnicity' and 'other' groups. The mean age of females attending the clinic was significantly lower than that of males (45.9 years, SD = 13.8 vs' 48.4 years, SD = 11.8) when analysed using a two-sample t-test (t (317) = 2.44, p = 0.02). One third of service users were aged between 50-59 years. Myopia and hyperopia prevalence rates were 37.0 % and 21.0 % respectively. A total of 34.8 % of homeless people were found to have uncorrected refractive error, and required spectacle correction.Conclusions: This study has identified a high proportion of uncorrected refractive error in this sample and therefore a need for regular eye examinations and provision of refractive correction for homeless people. Objective To assess knowledge and practice of primary eye care among primary healthcare workers known as community health extension workers in Funtua district of Nigeria. Methods Cross-sectional mixed method study among health workers employed in government-owned primary healthcare facilities. Quantitative data were obtained using self-administered questionnaires and checklists, while qualitative data by modified Delphi technique, role plays and observation. A score of 1 was given for each correct answer, while a total score of ≥60% was considered 'good'. Results Eighty three of 88 health workers participated (94%) in the questionnaire survey; while 16 of them were selected for the qualitative survey. Good scores regarding the knowledge of common eye diseases were obtained by 68.7%, but only 26.4% of them could identify their most important features. Participants could undertake 3 of 5 steps in visual acuity testing. Skills in recognising common eye diseases and their management were weak; while practice was often not according to the guidelines. Conclusion Community health extension workers displayed good knowledge of common eye diseases. Areas of weakness are recognition and interpretation of eye signs, and practice rarely follows the guidelines. Preventive medicine was neglected; community health extension workers require practical retraining and supervision to achieve integration of primary eye care into primary healthcare services. Purpose: Amblyopia is the most common cause of unilateral visual impairment. This study investigated parents' awareness of amblyopia in different regions of Saudi Arabia. Methods: This was a cross-sectional population study. The survey consisted of two main sections; the first section contained 13 general background questions, and the second section (10 questions) focused on awareness of amblyopia, routine vision checks and how to raise awareness of amblyopia in the community. The survey was distributed to respondents using email and social media. Results: The responses of 1649 families were received. Respondents' age range was from 22–62 years (mean ± standard deviation = 33.6 ± 8.7 years). Most respondents had no previous knowledge of amblyopia (1155 participants, 70%), and 313 participants (19%) had no idea if their children had amblyopia. In total, 990 participants (60%) did not visit the eye clinic with their children for a routine eye exam. A total of 495 parents (30%), who were aware of amblyopia, knew of it mainly from eye clinic visits and from Internet websites. A total of 140 respondents reported that their children had amblyopia; 58.3% of those children underwent routine eye examinations once a year, and the rest underwent routine eye examinations twice a year. Conclusion: The results clearly showed a lack of amblyopia awareness among the Saudi community. This lack of awareness can lead to visual impairment among children. Background: The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) Cambodia recently partnered with the Ministry of Women's Affairs (MoWA) and National Program for Eye Health (NPEH, part of the Ministry of Health) to establish the Gender Equality in Eye Health Project. As part of this project, a qualitative study was carried out to identify barriers affecting women's access to eye health in Cambodia.Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted in four provinces in both urban and rural locations between May and June 2015. Purposive sampling was used to identify respondents from a range of age groups, geographical locations, and experiences to explore different perceptions regarding access barriers to eye health care. Thirteen women experiencing eye problems (age range 45-84 years; mean age 63 years) and 25 eye health professionals took part in in-depth interviews. Eleven focus groups discussions were held with 69 participants (50 women, 19 married men) to capture the views and experiences of both younger and older women, as well as household decision makers' perspectives.Results: Gender-based differences in decision-making, access and control over resources and women's social status all contributed to impeding women's access to eye health services. Women relied predominantly on informal sources of information about health, and these channels might be utilised to address barriers to information and access. Disparities in perceived costs of eye health treatment were evident between eye healthcare providers and users: costs were not perceived as a barrier by service providers due to health financing support for poor patients, however, many users were not aware of the availability of the scheme.Conclusion: Demand-side and supply-side elements interact to reduce women's ability to seek eye treatment.
