Rapid coagulation of reptile blood often hinders its use in studies in remote and difficult-to-access areas, necessitating chemical preservation. Therefore, understanding the potential effects of anticoagulants on the isotopic compositions of blood is essential to avoid issues in interpreting the results for ecological studies. In this study we aimed to verify whether the storage time of the blood tissue in anticoagulants can influence its isotopic compositions of the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris), an ectothermic top predator from eastern South America. Blood samples were obtained from ten adult females of C. latirostris from a commercial breeding facility in 2015. Samples were stored in vials containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium heparin (SH) and centrifuged after 2 and 8 h to separate red blood cells and plasma. No effect of time was found on the δ13C and δ15N of whole blood, plasma, and red blood cells in contact with the two types of anticoagulants, EDTA and SH. The findings have practical implications for researchers in this field, as they suggest that anticoagulants can be used effectively for at least eight hours under refrigeration. Technological change has produced a high-choice media environment in which selective exposure and news avoidance are increasingly feasible and common. The literature has suggested several correlates of news avoidance, and recent work has particularly emphasized the potential significance of negative affective responses to news. This paper argues for the use of psychophysiological methods to better understand how emotional responses drive news avoidance. In doing so, we question the assumption—evident both in the literature on physiology and news, and in the literature on news and newsmaking—that physiological activation is positively associated with attention. We also offer an expository analysis of data from a physiological experiment in which respondents viewed stories for which activation quite likely motivated increased prolonged attention amongst some respondents, but a desire to avoid that content amongst others. DNA methylation GrimAge acceleration (DMGA) and intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA) are important physiological markers for assessing the ageing process. Evidence from cross-sectional studies suggests that some dietary intake is associated with DMGA and IEAA. However, the causal relationship between them has yet to be elucidated. This Mendelian randomisation study uses genetic variants associated with different dietary intakes as instrumental variables to explore the causal benefits of multiple dietary intakes on DMGA and IEAA. Cheese intake, dark chocolate intake, average weekly red wine intake, dried fruit intake, fresh fruit intake, porridge intake, cereal intake, and liver intake had a negative causal association with DMGA, and poultry intake and doughnut intake had a positive causal association with DMGA (p < 0.05). Muesli and bran cereal intake had a negative causal association with IEAA, and pineapple intake had a positive causal association with IEAA (p < 0.05). Dietary intake positively causally associated with IEAA or DMGA may have accelerated biological ageing; conversely, dietary intake negatively causally associated with IEAA or DMGA may have contributed to delaying biological ageing. Based on genetic evidence, this study demonstrated some significant causal benefits of dietary intake on DMGA and IEAA, suggesting the possibility of intervening in DNA methylation acceleration and epigenetic age acceleration by adjusting these food intakes, thereby promoting health and delaying ageing. Floral initiation in biennial-fruiting red raspberry is controlled by the interaction of temperature and photoperiod. To determine the threshold temperatures for short day (SD) floral initiation in early- and late-flowering cultivars, we exposed plants of 'Glen Ample', 'Glen Mor' and 'Duo' to 12°, 16° and 20°C in a daylight phytotron under naturally decreasing autumn daylength at Ås, Norway (59°40'N). While none of the cultivars ceased growing or initiated floral primordia at 20°C, 'Glen Ample' and 'Glen Mor' initiated buds at 12° and 16°C, whereas 'Duo' formed flower buds at 12°C only. Surprisingly, however, all plants flowered abundantly in spring after winter chilling in the dark at −1.5 ± 0.5°C for 7 months. We discuss two possible explanations for this unusual and novel flowering response. Fractional induction is well known in raspberry, and we visualise that in SD at 20°C, the SD requirement is fulfilled, while floral induction is still blocked by inappropriate temperature. A vernalisation-like response is alternatively suggested as this can take place at near-freezing temperatures in the dark. A combination of the two mechanisms is also possible and likely. AbstractSeveral studies emphasized the importance of zinc for better morpho-physiology in plants. The co-application of Zn can reduce N loss by increasing its uptake rates, but whether N level can affect Zn accumulation in different plant organs is not well studied. This experiment aimed to examine the impact of different levels of nitrogen and zinc on the morphology, physiology and nutrient uptake of maize, and whether different N levels would affect Zn accumulation. Two maize genotypes were grown hydroponically. Nitrogen was supplemented in two different concentrations, combined with two Zn concentrations. Zn level did not affect the shoot or the root dry weight of either genotype under optimal N level, but did under reduced N level. Reduced N level resulted in significantly higher root dry weight under both Zn concentrations in both genotypes. Significantly higher nitrogen remobilization rate was found at reduced N level in both genotypes. Optimal N level resulted in higher shoot and root N and Zn contents in both genotypes. The uptake of Zn was enhanced by optimal N compared to reduced N level, where the impact of genotypes was also observable. Reduced N level decreased both optimal and actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, and pigment contents of both genotypes. It could be concluded that N and Zn use efficiency is highly dependent on the genetic characteristics of maize genotypes, but optimal N supply is required for better incorporation of Zn into shoot and root tissues. Worry proneness is a transdiagnostic trait that predicts increased negative affect (NA), potentially in the service of preventing negative emotional contrasts. Although discrete types of NA vary along the dimension of arousal, the extent to which trait worry predicts high vs. low arousal forms of NA in daily life is unclear. This distinction has important implications for conceptualising how worry may perturb adaptive emotionality in various disorders. The present study (not pre-registered) aimed to isolate the effects of trait worry on high (N = 88) and low (N = 122) arousal NA in daily life using ecological momentary assessment while controlling for potential physical and psychological confounds. Participants were assessed for trait worry and depressive symptoms at baseline then reported their affect, heart rate, and exercise three times per day for one week. Multilevel models revealed that trait worry predicted both increased high and low arousal NA after controlling for momentary heart rate, daily exercise, and depression. In contrast, baseline depressive symptoms only predicted low arousal NA in daily life. This qualitative study looks at multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in examinations and their effectiveness in testing higher-order cognition. While there are claims that MCQs can do this, we consider many assertions problematic because of the difficulty in interpreting what higher-order cognition consists of and whether or not assessment tasks genuinely lead to specific outcomes. We interviewed university teachers from different disciplines to explore the extent to which MCQs can assess higher-order cognition specified in Bloom's taxonomy. The study showed that study participants believed MCQs can test higher-order cognition but most likely only at levels of 'apply' and 'analyse'. Using MCQs was often driven by the practicality of assessing large classes and by a need for comparing students' performances. MCQs also had a powerful effect on curriculum due to the careful alignment between teaching and assessment, which makes changes to teaching difficult. Postgraduate Taught study (PGT) students are often assumed to be confident and independent learners, and many possess a strong sense of professional identity and thus are perceived as not requiring support. This paper aims to address these perceptions. This paper presents a qualitative study of the experiences of PGT students at an Australian university who participated in a Transition In program that has been embedded in the curriculum. The primary aim was to explore the effectiveness of the Transition In program, which is the first step in a program-wide employability curriculum strategy. The findings of this study demonstrated that students' levels of confidence and engagement as well as their connection with their profession increased as a direct result of feeling supported. This paper highlights the importance of, and benefits gained by providing PGT students structured support to enable them to successfully transition into their program of study. Quantifying the pivotal elements that contribute to success in cycling and their strength, is of paramount importance in the formulation of sound and effective training regimens. Here we evaluated the power and differences of distinct performance indicators in predicting cycling competition outcomes. A total of 38 competitive male Lithuanian cyclists participated in this study, engaging in a maximal incremental exercise test, a cycling efficiency protocol, and a maximal sprint performance evaluation, from which multiple performance variables were derived. The cyclists were involved in two distinct competitions, where completion average speed and power profiles underwent analysis. Qualitative visual assessment was also employed to explore supplementary performance dimensions within these competitions. Notably, the principal explanatory variables for the two competitions were peak oxygen consumption relative to body mass (r = 0.74, p < 0.05) and cycling gross efficiency (r = 0.72, p < 0.05), respectively. Qualitative analysis unveiled divergences in terms of challenges and race dynamics inherent to the two competitions, while power profile comparisons yield no significant differences (p > 0.05). In conclusion, this study profiled Lithuanian cyclists, revealing power and differences among various performance metrics in predicting outcomes in diverse competitions. Copper, a micronutrient in low concentrations, in excess causes negative changes in the growth and development of plants. This study advances understanding in the dynamics of potentially toxic elements in areas with different uses, making it possible to evaluate the potential of C. cajan to remedy/reduce excess Cu in the soil. It was observed that in C. cajan grown in agricultural soil with high P availability, the translocation of Cu to shoot was 5−7 times greater than in grassland and grassland contaminated with Cu, where the preferred allocation for Cu was the root. The efficiency of the photosynthetic and symbiotic system was not affected; but an increase in the concentration of amino acids was observed. Because of considerable accumulation of Cu in the root and shoot, C. cajan was tolerant to a dose of approximately 100 mg kg−1 of Cu in viticulture soil and may be indicated as a phyto-extractor agent for this metal in agricultural soils. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTThallium (Tl), a key element in high-tech industries, is recognized as a priority pollutant by the US EPA and EC. Tl accumulation threatens aquatic ecosystems. Despite its toxicity, little is known about its impact on cyanobacteria. This study explores the biochemical mechanisms of Tl(I) toxicity in cyanobacteria, focusing on physiology, metabolism, oxidative damage, and antioxidant responses. To this end, Anabaena and Nostoc were exposed to 400 µg/L, and 800 µg/L of Tl(I) over seven days. Anabaena showed superior Tl(I) accumulation with 7.8% removal at 400 µg/L and 9.5% at 800 µg/L, while Nostoc removed 2.2% and 7.4%, respectively. Tl(I) exposure significantly reduced the photosynthesis rate and function, more than in Nostoc. It also altered primary metabolism, increasing sugar levels and led to higher amino and fatty acids levels. While Tl(I) induced cellular damage in both species, Anabaena was less affected. Both species enhanced their antioxidant defense systems, with Anabaena showing a 175.6% increase in SOD levels under a high Tl(I) dose. This suggests that Anabaena’s robust biosorption and antioxidant systems could be effective for Tl(I) removal. To identify key training load (TL) and intensity indicators in ice hockey, practice, and game data were collected using a wearable 200-Hz accelerometer and heart rate (HR) recording throughout a four-week (29 days) competitive period (23 practice sessions and 8 competitive games in 17 elite Danish players (n = 427 observations). Within-individual correlations among accelerometer- (total accelerations [Acctot], accelerations >2 m·s−2 [Acc2], total accelerations [Dectot], decelerations <- 2 m·s−2 [Dec2]), among HR-derived (time >85% maximum HR [t85%HRmax], Edwards’ TL and modified training impulse) TL indicators, and between acceleration- and HR-derived TL parameters were large to almost perfect (r = 0.69–0.99). No significant correlations were observed between accelerometer- and HR-derived intensity indicators. Three between- and two within-components were found. The K-means++ cluster analysis revealed five and four clusters for between- and within-loadings, respectively. The least Euclidean distance from their centroid for each cluster was reported by session-duration, Acctot, Dec2, TRIMPMOD, %t85HRmax for between-loadings, whereas session-duration, Acc2, t85HRmax and Dec2/min for within-loadings. Specific TL or intensity variables might be relevant to identify similar between-subject groups (e.g. individual player, playing positions), or temporal patterns (e.g. changes in TL or intensity over time). Traditional folding frames are expected to have more rolling resistance and power dissipation caused by frame deformation, while they are more convenient for transportation, such as in a car. A new hybrid frame, designed to be more rigid, aims to minimize power dissipation while still retaining foldability.This study aimed to assess rolling resistance, power output, propulsion technique and physiological demands of handrim wheelchair propulsion across three different frames: a rigid frame, a hybrid frame and a conventional folding frame.Forty-eight able-bodied participants performed coast-down tests using inertial measurement units to determine rolling resistance. Subsequently, four-minute submaximal exercise block under steady-state conditions at 1.11 m/s were performed on a wheelchair ergometer (n = 24) or treadmill (n = 24) to determine power output, propulsion technique and physiological demands.Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that the hybrid frame exhibited the lowest rolling resistance (7.0 ± 1.5N, p ≤ 0.001) and required less power output (8.3 ± 1.0W, p ≤ 0.001) at a given speed, compared to both the folding (9.3 ± 2.2N, 10.8 ± 1.4W) and rigid frame (8.0 ± 1.9N, 9.4 ± 1.6W). Subsequently, this resulted in significantly lower applied forces and push frequency for the hybrid frame. Assessing chronotype is essential in clinical and research environments, but the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ), a widely utilised tool, is not available in French. Therefore, we carried out an observational monocentric study to validate the French MCTQ against the sleep diary for sleep schedules, the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) for chronotype, and polysomnography measures. We utilised the mid-sleep point on free days (MSF), adjusted for sleep debt (MSFsc), to gauge morningness/eveningness. The study included 80 participants (average age: 40.9 years, 50% female). The sleep schedules determined by the MCTQ and the sleep diary showed a high correlation. The MSFsc demonstrated a significant correlation with the MEQ, persisting even under sleep constraints such as an alarm on free days. The predictive accuracy was strong for a morning chronotype and moderate for an evening chronotype as assessed using the MEQ. In summary, the French MCTQ is a reliable tool for researchers and clinicians for assessing sleep schedules and chronotype in French-speaking populations. The MSFsc can effectively predict chronotype, even under sleep constraints. However, for the evening chronotype, self-assessment appears to be more accurate. Laboratory fish play an important role in many research fields, and they are also raised and bred in many laboratories around the world. While many studies have suggested suitable feeding densities for various laboratory fish, significant variations exist in the sizes of rearing tanks across different laboratories. Moreover, there is limited research on the effects of different rearing tank sizes. In this study, we set up the same rearing density (one liter of water corresponding to two fishes) and four treatments with different tank sizes (5 L, 10 L, 15 L, 20 L). We found that different sizes of rearing tanks had no significant effect on the growth and shoaling of laboratory rare minnow. However, the rare minnow in 10 L tank had lower cortisol levels, while the rare minnow in 20 L tank had higher levels of dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites (DOPAC and 5-HIAA). These results show that even under the same rearing density, different sizes of rearing tanks will still have a physiological effect on the rare minnow, and the tank size suitable for laboratory fish should be considered. A crucial aspect of bladder function is the maintenance of a normo-active detrusor during bladder filling. The physiological mechanisms and pathways underlying this function are yet to be fully elucidated. Premature detrusor contractions are a key phenotype in detrusor overactivity, a common pathophysiological condition of the urinary bladder. Recent literature has identified PDFGRα+ cells as mediators in transducing inhibitory signals to detrusor smooth muscle cells via gap junctions. We employ computational modeling to study transduction pathways via which inhibitory signals are generated in PDFGRα+ cells in response to purinergic, nitrergic and mechanical stimuli. The key focus of our study here is to explore the effect of ATP, stretch and NO on the membrane potential of PDFGRα+ cells, which is driven to hyperpolarized potentials via the activation of SK3 channels. Our results indicate that purinergic, mechanical and nitrergic inputs can induce significant membrane hyperpolarizations of 20–35 mV relative to the resting membrane potential. Given the interconnections between PDFGRα+ cells and detrusor SMCs through gap junctions, these hyperpolarizations can have significant functional implications in the maintenance of a normo-active detrusor as also in departures from this state as seen in detrusor overactivity. AbstractPan-vascular diseases, based on systems biology theory, explore the commonalities and individualities of important target organs such as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral blood vessels, starting from the systemic and holistic aspects of vascular diseases. The purpose is to understand the interrelationships and results between them, achieve vascular health or sub-health, and comprehensively improve the physical and mental health of the entire population. Post-translational modification (PTM) is an important part of epigenetics, including phosphorylation, acetylation, ubiquitination, methylation, etc., playing a crucial role in the pan-vascular system. Crotonylation is a novel type of PTM that has made significant progress in the research of pan-vascular related diseases in recent years. Based on the review of previous studies, this article summarises the various regulatory factors of crotonylation, physiological functions and the mechanisms of histone and non-histone crotonylation in regulating pan-vascular related diseases to explore the possibility of precise regulation of crotonylation sites as potential targets for disease treatment and the value of clinical translation. Abstract\nSTATEMENT OF NOVELTYThis study unveiled the cadmium phytoremediation potential and its augmentation using 6-Benzylaminopurine in Strobilanthes alternata. Cadmium stress was provided by applying 250 mg/kg cadmium chloride in soil and 25 ppm of 6-BAP (25 ml) was administered to the plants as foliar spray. The results revealed high bioconcentration factor (BCF) (18.82 ± 0.54) and low translocation factor (TF) values (0.055 ± 0.002) for the plant based on which we strongly recommend S. alternata as a promising candidate for Cd phytoremediation. The phytostabilization potential of the plant was further enhanced by applying 6-BAP, which augmented its BCF to 22.09 ± 0.64 and reduced the TF to 0.038 ± 0.001. Cd toxicity caused a reduction of plant growth parameters, root volume, adaxial-abaxial stomatal indices, relative water content, tolerance index, moisture content, membrane stability index, and xylem vessel diameter in S. alternata. However, Cd + 6-BAP treated plants exhibited an increase of the same compared to Cd-treated plants. FTIR analysis of Cd + 6-BAP treated plants revealed increased deposition of hemicellulose, causing enhanced retention of Cd in the root xylem walls, which is largely responsible for increased phytostabilization of Cd. Therefore, 6-BAP application in S. alternata can be exploited to restore Cd-contaminated areas effectively.The research paper “6-Benzylaminopurine Mediated Augmentation of Cadmium Phytostabilization Potential in Strobilanthes alternata” has established the Cd phytostabilization potential of the plant Strobilanthes alternata and also identified the role of 6-BAP in augmenting the Cd phytoremediation potential of this plant for the very first time. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTThe effects of rootstocks tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), and nightshade (Solanum nigrum L.) grafting on the growth and selenium (Se) accumulation of Cyphomandra betacea Sendt. seedlings were studied to identify the most suitable rootstock for increasing Se uptake of fruit trees grown in Se-contaminated soil. The rootstocks of tomato, eggplant, and nightshade grafting increased the scion biomass of C. betacea seedlings by 146.1%, 23.2%, and 94.5%, respectively, compared with the un-grafted seedlings. Moreover, tomato, eggplant, and nightshade rootstocks grafting increased the photosynthesis, superoxide dismutase activity, and peroxidase activity, while reducing the catalase activity and soluble protein content of C. betacea seedlings. Although all three rootstocks grafting decreased Se contents in rootstock roots and stems, only nightshade rootstock grafting increased Se content in the scions of C. betacea seedlings. Notably, root biomass, catalase activity, soluble protein content, rootstock root Se content, and rootstock stem Se content were closely related to the scion Se content. These findings suggest that only grafting onto nightshade rootstock significantly enhances Se uptake in C. betacea, whereas tomato and eggplant rootstocks grafting have no effect on Se uptake.This study shows that under selenium (Se)-contaminated soil conditions, tomato, eggplant, and nightshade rootstocks can promote the growth of C. betacea seedlings and improve their stress resistance. The nightshade rootstock stands out for its ability to promote Se uptake in C. betacea seedlings, suggesting its suitability as a promising rootstock to enhance both growth and Se uptake in C. betacea. The origin of biological rhythms goes back to the very beginning of life. They are observed in the animal and plant world at all levels of organization, from cells to ecosystems. As early as the 18th century, plant scientists were the first to explain the relationship between flowering cycles and environmental cycles, emphasizing the importance of daily light-dark cycles and the seasons. Our temporal structure is controlled by external and internal rhythmic signals. Light is the main synchronizer of the circadian system, as daily exposure to light entrains our clock over 24 hours, the endogenous period of the circadian system being close to, but not exactly, 24 hours. In 1960, a seminal scientific meeting, the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Biological Rhythms, brought together all the biological rhythms scientists of the time, a number of whom are considered the founders of modern chronobiology. All aspects of biological rhythms were addressed, from the properties of circadian rhythms to their practical and ecological aspects. Birth of chronobiology dates from this period, with the definition of its vocabulary and specificities in metabolism, photoperiodism, animal physiology, etc. At around the same time, and right up to the present day, research has focused on melatonin, the circadian neurohormone of the pineal gland, with data on its pattern, metabolism, control by light and clinical applications. However, light has a double face, as it has positive effects as a circadian clock entraining agent, but also deleterious effects, as it can lead to chronodisruption when exposed chronically at night, which can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. Finally, research over the past few decades has unraveled the anatomical location of circadian clocks and their cellular and molecular mechanisms. Previous to this study, there is no data relating to the reproductive physiology of the Cirneco dell'Etna breed. The birth date of 141 bitches and 104 sires registered at the National Agency of the Italian Kennel Club (ENCI) from all Sicilian breeders, and data related their fertile matings, which produced 266 whelps over a 14-year period, (2009–2022) were collected. Total whelping produced 1069 pups. The mean bitch age at first whelping was 39.13 ± 21.7 months and the mean litter size was 3.84 ± 2.08. The birth period of the bitches and sires was significantly influenced by the month of the year (p < 0.01), as was the distribution of the first (p < 0.05) and subsequent whelping periods (p < 0.01). Whelping distributions show a significant difference between the highest peak in April (which roughly corresponds to a period of heat in February) and in July (which roughly corresponds to a period of heat in May) and the lowest peak in March. No influence of month on litter size and sex ratio was found. Available data suggests that some ancient breeds such as the Cirneco dell'Etna may show seasonal patterns as a vestige of the stricter seasonality of its closest relative the wolf. Over the last decade, nanoparticles have found great interest among scientists and researchers working in various fields within the realm of biomedicine including drug delivery, gene delivery, diagnostics, targeted therapy and biomarker mapping. While their physical and chemical properties are impressive, there is growing concern about the toxicological potential of nanoparticles and possible adverse health effects as enhanced exposure of biological systems to nanoparticles may result in toxic effects leading to serious contraindications. Toxicity associated with nanoparticles (nanotoxicity) may include the undesired response of several physiological mechanisms including the distressing of cells by external and internal interaction with nanoparticles. However, comprehensive knowledge of nanotoxicity mechanisms and mitigation strategies may be useful to overcome the hazardous situation while treating diseases with therapeutic nanoparticles. With the same objectives, this review discusses various mechanisms of nanotoxicity and provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on the impact of nanotoxicity on biological control systems and organs including liver, brain, kidneys and lungs. An attempt also been made to present various approaches of scientific research and strategies that could be useful to overcome the effect of nanotoxicity during the development of nanoparticle-based systems including coating, doping, grafting, ligation and addition of antioxidants. Existing readings of Wordsworth's physiological aesthetics do little to explicate the agency that is attached to the blood and its role in Wordsworth's conception of the mind and its creative processes. This essay introduces the medico-historical contexts of emerging physiological knowledge as well as long-held paradigms of health and disease to demonstrate how blood participates in the workings of the mind and reveals a more distinctly corporeal process of creative development and production in Wordsworth's poetry and prose. I argue that Wordsworth's mental system is a blood-based mind: one that is attuned to the fluid connections between the vascular and nervous systems that were of special importance to physiologists of the eighteenth century. In his poetry and prose, Wordsworth figures blood as a substance of mind that assimilates impressions from the natural world and serves as a raw material of mind that must be refined and regulated for the sake of the poet's creative health. Improvement of selenium (Se) uptake in fruit tree can improve the source of food Se for humans. In this study, the effect of various abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations on the Se uptake in Cyphomandra betacea Sendt. (Solanum betaceum Cav.) seedlings was studied under Se stress. Only the concentration of 20 μmol/L ABA promoted the growth of C. betacea seedlings by increasing the biomass and regulating the resistance physiology under Se stress. ABA also increased the Se content in C. betacea seedlings under Se stress. The concentration of ABA at 20 μmol/L got the maximum root Se and shoot Se contents, which increased by 76.64% and 55.83%, respectively, compared with the control. Correlation and grey relational analyses showed that the peroxidase activity and proline content had the first two closest relationship with the shoot Se content. This study shows that ABA can promote the Se uptake in C. betacea under Se stress, and the concentration of 20 μmol/L ABA is the optimum for Se uptake and growth of C. betacea. Under selenium (Se) stress, abscisic acid (ABA) promotes the Se uptake in Cyphomandra betacea Sendt. (Solanum betaceum Cav.) seedlings, but only the concentration of 20 μmol/L ABA promotes the growth of C. betacea seedlings. While many believe that affective polarisation poses a significant threat to democratic stability, the definition and operationalisation of the concept varies greatly. This leads to conceptual slippage as well as imprecise tests of the causes and consequences of affective polarisation. In order to clearly identify and target its micro-foundations, we must understand the degree to which political divides are, in fact, affective. In this paper, we do so. We begin by delineating affective polarisation, a social divide that is purportedly distinct from policy-based disagreements. Subsequently, we explore the influence of emotions in politics, including how affect is conceptualised within the framework of polarisation. Where possible, our literature review is supplemented with analyses of existing datasets to support our points. A blended teaching mode is necessary to improve the study efficiency of nursing students. This study aimed to explore the effects of the use of case-based learning (CBL), involving microlectures and flipped classroom teaching methods (flipped CBL mode), via online tools on the teaching of physiology to nursing undergraduates. A total of 207 nursing undergraduates were divided into a control group and a flipped CBL group. The control group received lecture-based learning, while the flipped CBL group received flipped CBL. The results showed that the final exam scores of the flipped CBL group were higher than those of the control group. The majority of nursing students believed that the flipped CBL model could provide guidance for future clinical practice, and could help in their study of physiology. Appetite (satiation and satiety) is an essential element for the control of eating behavior, and as a consequence human nutrition, body weight, and chronic disease risk. A better understanding of appetite mechanisms is necessary to modulate eating behavior and food intake, and also provide a practical approach for weight management. Although many researchers have investigated the relationships between satiation/satiety and specific factors including human physiology, psychology, and food characteristics, limited information on the interactions between factors or comparisons between the relative importance of factors in contributing to satiation/satiety have been reported. This article reviews progress and gaps in understanding individual attributes contributing to perceived satiation/satiety, the advantages of considering multiple factors together in appetite experiments, as well as the applications of nondestructive sensing in evaluating human factors contributing to relative appetite perception. The approaches proposed position characterization of appetite (satiation and satiety) for personalized and precision nutrition in relation to human status and healthy diets. In particular, it is recommended that future studies of appetite perception recognize the inter-dependence of food type and intake, appetite (satiation and satiety), and individual status. There has been a shift in tertiary education, whereby large portions of theory are now taught online, and the practical skills underpinned by this knowledge taught in clinical environments. It is unclear if this flipped approach is appropriate for the learning styles Exercise Science (ES) and Clinical Exercise Physiology (CEP) students. First- and second-year ES and CEP students at a South Australian metropolitan university were invited to participate between March 2021 and October 2022. Eligible participants completed the Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (KLSI) (Version 3.1) to identify learning styles. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the four KLSI learning orientations. Group scores for the learning orientations were used to identify group preference for abstractness over concreteness and action over reflection. A total of 69 students completed the KLSI fully. As a single cohort, Accommodators were the most common learning style, and there was a preference for concreteness over abstractness when gaining experience and a preference for action over reflection when transferring experience into knowledge. These findings indicate that Australian ES and CEP students have a unique learning style that may be suited to flipped classroom approaches, but only if they include opportunity to experience skill learning in a hands-on manner, while also allowing time for reflection. Body condition in individuals is intricately linked to behaviour, physiology, and immunity. This study investigated how seasonal factors, such as reproduction and moulting, influence the body condition of 21 tanager species in the Atlantic Forest. Utilising publicly available data, I employed phylogenetic generalised linear mixed models to dissect these influences. Notably, females with brood patches exhibited concurrent body and feather moult, suggesting simultaneous energy-costly constraints. Furthermore, females with brood patches displayed higher body condition, indicating proactive preparation or increased resource availability during breeding. Lastly, individuals moulting body feathers exhibited enhanced body condition, suggesting heightened foraging activity. The crustose coralline alga Lithophyllum stictiforme is an important reef builder, forming coralligenous concretions in the Mediterranean Sea. This algal species complex is composed of eight cryptic species (or clades). The objective of our study was to compare light-dependent physiological processes within and between the two most abundant cryptic species (C1 and C4) of L. stictiforme from the Bay of Marseille (France). Physiological rates of respiration, photosynthesis and calcification were measured using incubation chambers under various irradiance levels and in the dark during the summer period. We compared the physiology of the C1 and C4 cryptic species of L. stictiforme among three algal groups: C1 (the most common in the Marseille area) from 28 m depth, C4 from the same site and depth, and C1 from a deeper site at 45 m depth. We found both interspecific (between C1 and C4) and intraspecific (within C1) physiological differences. Photosynthetic parameters showed acclimation to light (or depth) with higher values of initial slope of photosynthetic light response curve (α) and lower values of saturating irradiance (Ek) and compensating irradiance (Ec) for C1 from 45 m than for C1 and C4 from 28 m depth. At the shallower depth, significant physiological differences were observed between C1 and C4 with a higher value of maximum rate of gross photosynthesis (Pg max) in C4, suggesting better ability to grow under high irradiance. Light and dark calcification rates differed only between C4 from 28 m and C1 from 45 m depth, being intermediate in C1 from 28 m depth. On a 24 h basis, diel net calcification rates were significantly higher in specimens from the shallower waters than from the deeper waters. Physiological differences suggest physiological plasticity within the regionally dominant cryptic species C1 and species-specific physiological traits between the cryptic species C1 and C4. Photosynthesis and calcification rates differ among Lithophyllum stictiforme cryptic species. The regionally dominant cryptic species exhibits light-dependent physiological plasticity. Structured experience (SE) providers continuously evaluate and improve their experiential offerings to make them more memorable. Arguably, the temporal dynamics of the emotions in an experience have a crucial influence on its memorability. Traditional post-experience evaluation procedures tend to ignore these temporal dynamics, thus offering imprecise feedback for providers on exactly when and where to optimize their experiential offerings. In this paper, we use two methods as a tool for evaluating how closely the lived experience of a SE follows the experience as intended by the provider: real-time skin conductance (SC) and experience reconstruction measures (ERMs). We demonstrate that both SC and ERMs are significantly related to intended experience. This link was found to be stronger for later sections of the experience than for earlier sections. The growth, enzyme activity, and nutritional value of Theobroma cacao L. are strongly affected under hypoxic conditions and by the toxicity of iron (Fe). It is a challenge to mitigate the stress caused by excessive levels of Fe under flooding in cocoa trees. This study evaluated the physiological response of two cocoa genotypes to different Fe concentrations and hypoxic conditions. The plants were cultivated under three Fe concentrations (44.5, 133.5, and 400.5 lmol L-1 FeSO4) and two hydroponic cultivation conditions, one with an oxygenated nutrient solution and the other solution without oxygenation (hypoxia). Growth characteristics, enzyme activity, and nutritional balance were evaluated at 116 days after planting. An increased guaiacol peroxidase activity and higher phenolic compound contents of genotype TSH 1188 were observed at the Fe concentration of 400.5 lmol L-1 under hypoxia. The genotype SIAL 70 was also recorded increased with rising Fe concentrations, even without aeration. Regardless of the hypoxic conditions, the calcium content of both genotypes decreased with increasing Fe concentrations in the nutrient solution, while the Zn concentration of genotype TSH 1188 increased, regardless of the hypoxic nutrient solution, and that of genotype SIAL 70 decreased under hypoxic conditions. The genotypes respond differently to Fe excess and hypoxia, indicating distinct tolerance mechanisms for each stress type. In general, the tolerance of genotype TSH 1188 and SIAL 70 to the combination of Fe excess and hypoxia, respectively, was high and moderate, suggesting that the two genotypes have different mechanisms to support these stress conditions. Due to the essential role of nano-fertilizers in crop production, studies have yet to be conducted to evaluate nano-molybdenum (Mo) application on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The present study assessed the efficacy of nano-Mo on the Mo-uptake, plant growth, and winter wheat yield. Wheat was grown in the pot experiment using four experimental groups (deionized water: C, nano potassium molybdate: NMoK, potassium molybdate: MoK, and ammonium molybdate: MoA), each with six replicate samples applied-foliar three times in a 30-day interval. The results revealed that NMoK improved Mo accumulation in grains, stomatal conductance, root dry weight, yield, and the number of spikes per pot of wheat compared with MoK. Additionally, NMoK treatment significantly increased wheat grain yield by 46.29%, 13.94%, and 17.70% compared with C, MoK, and MoA treatments, respectively. These results demonstrated that the nano-Mo application may enhance Mo-inefficient wheat growth, thus, increasing its productivity under acidic soil conditions. The principal component analysis (PCA) elucidates that all variables reside within the positively correlated variable domain. This encompasses parameters related to yield, photosynthetic machinery, and Mo uptake by various plant organs. Through cluster analysis, the nano-Mo group exhibited a more pronounced influence on the variables than the without-Mo and non-nano-Mo groups. Based on our findings, nano-Mo could be a suitable alternative to non-nano molybdenum fertilizers. Previous studies have established that telomere length is associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, confounding factors and reverse causality bias can impair observational research. Here, we conducted a two-sample MR study to see if telomere length is causally linked to MS using publically available GWAS summary statistics. We screened 13 independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to leukocyte telomere length in a recent genome-wide association meta-analysis, which was available for 78,592 samples of European ancestry. The summary statistics for MS were from the latest meta-analyses conducted by the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC), which included 115,803 European participants (47,429 MS, 68,374 controls). We found that leukocyte telomere length and MS are correlated (IVW estimate of odds ratio (OR): 2.13 per 1-SD increase in genetically determined telomere length, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.55–2.92, p = 3.18 × 10−6). Our MR study supported that leukocyte telomere length and MS have a positive causal relationship. Further researches are warranted to elucidate the physiological mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal safety guidelines with upper thresholds aim to protect athletes' health, yet evidence-based sport-specific thresholds remain unestablished. Experimenting with athletes in severely hot conditions raises ethical concerns, so we used a thermo-physiological model to validate the thresholds of guidelines for outdoor sports. First, the reproducibility of the joint system thermoregulation model (JOS-3) of core temperature has been validated for 18 sports experiments (n = 213) and 11 general exercise experiments (n = 121) using the Bland – Altman analysis. Then, core temperatures were predicted using the JOS-3 in conditions corresponding to the upper thresholds, and if the 90th–99.7th percentile core temperature value (corresponding to 0.3%–10% of the participants) exceeded 40°C, the thresholds were judged as potentially hazardous. Finally, we proposed revisions for sports with potentially hazardous thresholds. As a result, the JOS-3 could simulate core temperature increases in most experiments (27/29) for six sports and general exercises with an accuracy of 0.5°C. The current upper thresholds for marathons, triathlons, and football are potentially hazardous. Suggested revisions, based on specified percentiles, include: Football: revise from wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) 32°C to 29–31°C or not revise. Marathon: revise from WBGT 28°C to 24–27°C. Triathlon: revise from WBGT 32.2°C to 23–26°C. If conducting sports events under the revised upper thresholds proves difficult, taking measures for a possible high incidence of heat illness becomes crucial, such as placing additional medical resources, assisting heat acclimatization and cooling strategies for participants, and rule changes such as shorter match times and increased breaks. The present study was conducted to replicate and resolve the paradox of work. This paradox makes it appear that intrinsic motivation functions differently based on the type of activity being performed, with productive activities having different patterns of relationships among predictor and subjective experience indices of intrinsic motivation than found in other life domains. Variables were drawn from three theoretical perspectives – self-determination theory (self-determination and interest), flow theory (balance of challenges and skills and flow experiences), and eudaimonic identity theory (self-realization values and feelings of personal expressiveness). A sample of 637 college students completed the Personally Expressive Activities Questionnaire. The paradox of work was replicated and, as hypothesized, relationships among the predictor and subjective experience variables were demonstrated to be similar across all activity domains including productive activities. This study investigated the interactive effects of drought stress with biochar on plant growth, the physiological and biochemical attributes of soybean seedlings. A pot trial tested the effect of amending a loamy sandy soil with biochar at three doses: 0%, 3% and 6% in the alleviation of drought stress, imposed by adjusting soil moisture content at three levels (in terms of soil field capacity, FC): 100% FC, 75% FC and 50% FC. Water deficit negatively influenced the growth of soybean seedlings and chlorophyll content of leaves, particularly in non-amended plants whereas biochar amendment boosted the growth and chlorophyll content, particularly under drought stress. Drought stress elevated malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), proline, sucrose and abscisic acid (ABA) contents as well as the antioxidant enzyme activity [peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)] of soybean leaves but reduced the contents of indole acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA); biochar amendment counteracted the impact of drought. Grounded in communicated narrative sense-making (CNSM) theory and communication theory of resilience (CTR), the current study investigated how women narratively constructed resilience surrounding pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the adverse effects of stress on pregnant individuals and their babies, it is important to understand the triggers and process of resilience in this context. We interviewed 21 cisgender women who were pregnant during the COVID-19 pandemic to solicit their stories of stress and resilience. Findings revealed that pregnant women managed structural, informational, and interpersonal stressors unique to the COVID-19 pandemic. They engaged in re-storying to reconcile the gap between their expected pregnancy, fueled by the U.S. master narrative of pregnancy and birth, and their lived pregnancy during a pandemic. Participants demonstrated narrative resilience through reconnecting, reframing, and recentering. These findings advance theorizing in communicated resilience by centering CNSM as the sense-making process of enacting resilience and recognizing the importance and burden of resilience during pregnancy. Biological clocks regulate the behavior and physiology of animals by tracking the local time using diverse time cues. Social cues are relevant in studying the behavior of gregarious animals, but these cues have not been widely studied in birds. Temporal information for circadian timekeeping is socially communicated through visual, physical, olfactory, and auditory means. We examined the efficacy of pulsatile social interactions on locomotor activity and its associated characteristics such as distribution profile of rest and activity, total counts, activity duration, phase shift in activity onset, and circadian periodicity in spotted munia. Besides, we analyzed the effect of such social interactions on their body mass. Spotted munia exhibited phase shift in the onset of activity when subjected to social isolation, but these cues could not affect their circadian periodicity. In Pair as well as in Group, social isolation led to increased activity and activity duration, and decreased body mass in guests relative to the host bird. Our results suggest that the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in spotted munia is quite sensitive to socialization and isolation, and isolation is detrimental for the birds. This study aimed to evaluate the acute and long-term exposure to different cupric sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O) concentrations in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Experiment 1 evaluated the LC50-96 h of juveniles at 12 different CuSO4.5H2O concentrations (0.00, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 6.4, 12.8, 25.6, 51.2, 102.4, and 204.8 mg L–1). In experiment 2, fish were exposed to four different sublethal cupric sulfate pentahydrate concentrations (0.0, 0.0069, 0.0696, and 0.6960 mg L–1) with evaluations on days 20 and 40. In the first experiment, the LC50 and safe concentration for 96 h were, respectively, 6.96 and 0.6960 mg CuSO4.5H2O L−1. In the second experiment, fish subjected to 0.6960 mg CuSO4.5H2O L–1 decreased growth performance and survival, altered hematological parameters, and had hepatic vacuolation and liver necrosis. In conclusion, we have found that to control the excessive algae growth, fish could tolerate a concentration of up to 0.0696 mg CuSO4.5H2O L−1 for 40 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Police officers are regularly evaluated for their competency in a variety of skills related to use of force (UOF), including lethal force decision-making, which is usually tested using stressful reality-based scenarios in virtual or live formats. The current observational study fills a literature gap by examining performance (i.e., shoot/no-shoot errors) and stress physiology among 187 police officers during virtual (i.e., video-based) and live UOF scenarios as part of their agency's annual requalification assessment. While moderately low rates of lethal force errors we\re observed overall, there were significantly fewer errors in live (0.81%) versus video scenarios (5.92%). Both conditions elicited significant stress physiology, as measured by heart rate (HR) relative to rest, with higher maximum heart rate in live scenarios. Based on emerging empirical literature and the current findings, we contribute to the discussion on the practical benefits and limitations of video and live simulation approaches in policing. Background: Experiences of early life maltreatment (ELM) are alarmingly common and represent a risk factor for the development of psychopathology, particularly depression. Research has focused on alterations in autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning as a mediator of negative mental health outcomes associated with ELM. Early alterations in autonomic vagal activity (vmHRV) may moderate the relationship between ELM and depression, particularly when considering forms of emotional maltreatment. Recent evidence suggests that the relationships of both ELM and vmHRV with depression may be non-linear, particularly considering females. Objective: Building on and extending theoretical considerations and previous work, the present work aims to further the current understanding of the complex relationships between ELM exposure, vmHRV, and depression. Methods: This study uses an adaptive modelling approach, combining exploratory networkbased analyses with linear and quadratic moderation analyses, drawing on a large sample of males and females across adolescence (total N = 213; outpatient at-risk sample and healthy controls) and adulthood (total N = 85; community-based convenience sample). Results: Exploratory network-based analyses reveal that exposure to emotional abuse is particularly central within a network of ELM subtypes, depressive symptoms, and concurrent vmHRV in both adolescents and adults. In adults, emotional neglect shows strong associations with both emotional abuse and vmHRV and is highly central as a network node, which is not observed in adolescents. Moderator analyses reveal significant interactions between emotional maltreatment and vmHRV predicting depressive symptoms in adult females. Significant quadratic relationships of emotional maltreatment and vmHRV with depression are observed in both adolescent and adult females. Conclusions: The present findings contribute to the understanding of the psychological and physiological mechanisms by which ELM acts as a risk factor for the development of depression. Phytoplanktonic communities have been moulded from a higher level in the food web by zooplankton predation. Diatoms, which are the major primary producers in present day oceans, have evolved many strategies to thrive in the presence of copepods, their predators. Chemical signals are released in the aquatic environment by microarthropods and elicit morphological, behavioural and/or physiological modifications in diatom cells which allow them to cope with predators. Other than the most studied effects of copepod signals on the release of toxins by diatoms, the role of chemical cues on growth and biology of non-toxic diatoms has been little investigated, although it may broaden our knowledge of co-evolutive physiological mechanisms. To examine the response of diatoms to copepod-derived signals, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Chaetoceros muelleri and Cylindrotheca fusiformis (Bacillariophyceae) were grown in the presence of copepod cues. Physiological modifications occurred and differed in sign and magnitude between species: i) in P. tricornutum cell density was higher, and dry weight lower, suggesting energy allocation into cell division at the expense of lipid and protein quotas; ii) C. muelleri showed a very homeostatic behaviour; and iii) in C. fusiformis cell density was lower and lipid content higher, showing energy allocation into lipids, which likely act as deterrent to feeders. Copepod cues are here suggested to have ruled diatom species composition in the ocean by affecting species-specific growth performance and the energy allocation into macromolecules. The concomitant evaluation of physicochemical properties and development of important diseases, such as brown rot in peaches postharvest, is hampered by the use of destructive methods for physicochemical analysis. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics in wounded and unwounded 'Chimarrita' and 'Maciel' peaches inoculated with M. fructicola assessed by non-destructive methods. The fruits were stored at room temperature (25 ºC) for 10 days after harvest. Colorimeter, near-infrared spectroscopy and portable spectrophotometer DA-meter® (single index of absorbance difference, IAD index) were used to evaluate the physicochemical changes that naturally occurred in peaches during postharvest and due to pathogen development on the same fruit simultaneously. Incidence and severity of brown rot were evaluated by counting the number of lesions resulting from inoculation at 24, 48 and 60 h post inoculation. Also, the sporulation of M. fructicola on fruit surface was evaluated. The results indicated that differences between wounded and unwounded fruits related soluble solids content, pulp firmness, titratable acidity, dry matter and IAD did not affect the incidence of M. fructicola in both cultivars. However, the interaction between dry matter and colour at the time of inoculation influenced colonisation and consequent lesion size in inoculated wounded 'Chimarrita' fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It highlights the advancements in noninvasive imaging, particularly computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA), which has become the dominant test for diagnosing coronary artery disease. The use of CTCA has been recommended as the default test for stable patients with chest pain, as it has shown prognostic benefits and allows for the identification of coronary atheroma and plaque composition. Additionally, the article discusses the clinical utility of fractional flow reserve derived from CTCA datasets and the potential of deep learning artificial intelligence in risk stratification and prognosis. Caulerpa is a widely distributed genus of chlorophytes (green macroalgae) which are important for their dietary, social and coastal ecosystem value. Ocean acidification (OA) threatens the future of marine ecosystems, favouring macroalgal species that could benefit from increased seawater carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Most macroalgae species possess CO2 concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) that allow active uptake of bicarbonate (HCO3−). Those species without CCMs are restricted to using CO2, which is currently the least abundant species of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in seawater. Thus, macroalgae without CCMs are predicted to be likely benefit from OA. Caulerpa is one of the rare few genera that have species both with and without CCMs. The two most common Caulerpa species in New Zealand are C. geminata (possesses a CCM) and C. brownii (non-CCM). We investigated the responses of growth, photo-physiology and DIC utilisation of C. geminata and C. brownii to four mean seawater pH treatments (8.03, 7.93, 7.83 and 7.63) that correspond to changes in pH driven by increases in pCO2 simulating future OA. There was a tendency for the mean growth rates for C. brownii (non-CCM) to increase under lower pH, and the growth rates of C. geminata (CCM) to decline with lower pH, although this was not statistically significant. However, this is likely because variability in growth rates also increased as seawater pH declined. There were few other differences in physiology of both species with pH, although there was tendency for greater preference for CO2 over HCO3− uptake in the CCM species with declining seawater pH. With the rapid development of systems biology technology, there is a deeper understanding of the molecular biological mechanisms and physiological characteristics of microorganisms. Yeasts are widely used in the food industry with their excellent fermentation performances. While due to the complex environments of food production, yeasts have to suffer from various stress factors. Thus, elucidating the stress mechanisms of food yeasts and proposing potential strategies to improve tolerance have been widely concerned. This review summarized the recent signs of progress in the variety, functions, and stress tolerance of food yeasts. Firstly, the main food yeasts occurred in fermented foods, and the taxonomy levels are demonstrated. Then, the main functions of yeasts including aroma enhancer, safety performance enhancer, and fermentation period reducer are discussed. Finally, the stress response mechanisms of yeasts and the strategies to improve the stress tolerance of cells are reviewed. Based on sorting out these related recent researches systematically, we hope that this review can provide help and approaches to further exert the functions of food yeasts and improve food production efficiency. The current era of (e-)learning invests heavily on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Various dedicated MOOC platforms are used, such as Coursera, Udacity, and Open edX. Moodle, one of the most popular open-source Learning Management Systems (LMS), has been also used for MOOC implementations. Usability and user experience (UX) are very important for e-learning software. This paper presents an in-depth comparative UX evaluation of two platforms used for MOOC implementations: Open edX and Moodle. The reported evaluation study combines user interaction metrics and wearable biosensors. Participants performed four typical interaction tasks in both platforms. User performance data (task success, time on task), self-reported data (SUS, AttrakDiff), and stress-related physiological data (skin conductance, heart rate) were collected and analyzed. It was found that Open edX performs better than Moodle in almost every UX aspect we examined. However, the reported results do not imply that building and delivering a MOOC via Moodle is prohibitive. The choice of the platform to be used by an institution is affected by several factors of non-technological nature, such as students' familiarity with an e-learning platform, available financial and human resources, as well as delivery deadlines. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of reciprocal grafting on the growth and Cd accumulation in post-grafting generations of two cherry tomatoes – red (Red cherry 5-5-1-1) and yellow (RTY-3-2) cherry tomatoes. Six treatments, which consisted of ungrafted red cherry tomato (R-CK), ungrafted yellow cherry tomato (Y-CK), red cherry tomato as rootstock (R-rootstock), red cherry tomato as scion (R-scion), yellow cherry tomato as rootstock (Y- rootstock), and yellow cherry tomato as scion (Y-scion) were utilised. The results showed that grafting significantly decreased the root biomass of Y- rootstock and Y-scion as compared to that of Y-CK, but there were no differences in the shoot biomass. Compared with that of Y-CK, grafting increased the root Cd content of the post-grafting generations, specifically, Y- rootstock and Y-scion increased by 54.44% and 52.96%, respectively. There were no significant differences in the shoot Cd content of Y- rootstock, Y-scion, and Y-CK. The root, stem, leaf, and shoot biomass of R-rootstock increased by 14.17%, 76.23%, 36.47%, and 21.72%, respectively, as compared with that of R-CK. However, grafting had no significant effect on the root, stem, leaf, and shoot biomass of R-scion. Grafting significantly increased the root Cd content of R-rootstock. However, grafting significantly decreased the shoot Cd content of R-rootstock, with the value 26.18% lower than that of R-CK. The root Cd content of R-scion significantly increased compared with the R-CK, and the shoot Cd content had no differences. Therefore, the reciprocal grafting of the two cherry tomatoes promoted the growth and reduced the Cd uptake of R-rootstock. The first complete upper and lower limbswimming cycle after the underwater segment of start and turns represents the breakout phase in competitive swimming. The aim of the present research was to examine the effect of the breakout movements on the stroking variables and coordinative patterns of competitive swimmers. Thirty-three national-level male swimmers performed 4 x 25 m maximal efforts (one of each stroke in random order) from a push start and were recorded by two sequential cameras in the sagittal plane. The average velocity, stroke length, and stroke frequency; the relative duration (%) of the stroke phases; and the inter-limb discrete relative phases were calculated using direct linear transformation algorithms for the breakout and free-swimming phases. In general terms, swimming velocity during breakout was faster (δ 0.27 ± 0.04 m/s, p < 0.001, ES = 0.33) than free swimming (in all strokes but breaststroke), not because of a faster previous underwater kicking or a modified coordinative swimming pattern, but because of an increase in the stroke rate (δ 4.68 ± 0.79 cycles/min, p < 0.001, ES = 0.36).
