Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a complex role in interactions between plant viruses and their host plants. They can both help the plant defend against viral infection and support viral infection and spread. This review explores the various roles of ROS in plant-virus interactions, focusing on their involvement in symptom development and the activation of plant defense mechanisms. The article discusses how ROS can directly inhibit viral infection, as well as how they can regulate antiviral mechanisms through various pathways involving miRNAs, virus-derived small interfering RNAs, viral proteins, and host proteins. Additionally, it examines how ROS can enhance plant resistance by interacting with hormonal pathways and external substances. The review also considers how ROS might promote viral infection and transmission, emphasizing their intricate role in plant-virus dynamics. These insights offer valuable guidance for future research, such as exploring the manipulation of ROS-related gene expression through genetic engineering, developing biopesticides, and adjusting environmental conditions to improve plant resistance to viruses. Using traditional materials to improve the permeability of silty soils can cause irreversible damage to the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop environmentally friendly biopolymers, such as xanthan gum (XG), to replace traditional materials to improve resistance to water erosion by reducing the permeability coefficient. In this study, a series of permeability tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were conducted on xanthan gum-improved silty soil (XGS). The variations in the permeability coefficient of XG-improved silty soil and the effects of initial dry density, XG-soil ratio, and curing age on the permeability were investigated. Test results show that the permeability coefficient of XGS decreased with the increase of initial dry density, XG-soil ratio, and curing age. With increasing the initial dry density, soil particles compressed against each other, decreasing the actual water flow crossing area, which leads to a decrease in the permeability coefficient. With the increase of the XG-soil ratio, the fill-blocking effect of xanthan gum with hydrogel connections becomes more and more obvious, which leads to a reduction in the permeability coefficient. Xanthan gum hydration takes time, and a lot of crystals are produced in XGS as the curing age increases; these crystals fill larger pores, resulting in the permeability coefficient decrease. At last, a model was developed to predict the permeability coefficient of XG-improved silty soil by using the initial dry density, XG-soil ratio, and curing age. The model can be used to rapidly predict the permeability coefficient of the improved silty soil under different conditions. Candidalysin, a cytolytic peptide toxin secreted by the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans, is critical for fungal pathogenesis. Yet, its intracellular targets have not been extensively mapped. Here, we performed a high-throughput enhanced yeast two-hybrid (HT-eY2H) screen to map the interactome of all eight Ece1 peptides with their direct human protein targets and identified a list of potential interacting proteins, some of which were shared between the peptides. CCNH, a regulatory subunit of the CDK-activating kinase (CAK) complex involved in DNA damage repair, was identified as one of the host targets of candidalysin. Mechanistic studies revealed that candidalysin triggers a significantly increased double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs), as evidenced by the formation of γ-H2AX foci and colocalization of CCNH and γ-H2AX. Importantly, candidalysin binds directly to CCNH to activate CAK to inhibit DNA damage repair pathway. Loss of CCNH alleviates DSBs formation under candidalysin treatment. Depletion of candidalysin-encoding gene fails to induce DSBs and stimulates CCNH upregulation in a murine model of oropharyngeal candidiasis. Collectively, our study reveals that a secreted fungal toxin acts to hijack the canonical DNA damage repair pathway by targeting CCNH and to promote fungal infection. Candidalysin is a toxin secreted by Candida albicans. Although critical for pathogenesis, its intracellular targets are not well mapped. Here, we propose a green and sustainable 3D porous aerogel based on citrus peel (CP), chitosan (CS), and bentonite (BT). This aerogel is prepared through a simple sol–gel and freeze-drying process and is designed for efficient capture of Cu(II) ions from water matrices. CCBA-2, with its abundance of active binding sites, exhibits an impressive Cu(II) adsorption yield of 861.58 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics follow the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. In the presence of coexisting mixed-metal ions, CCBA-2 demonstrates a significantly higher selectivity coefficient (KdCu = 1138.5) for removing Cu(II) ions compared to other toxic metal ions. Furthermore, the adsorption of Cu(II) ions by CCBA-2 is not significantly affected by coexisting cations/anions, ionic strength, organic matter, or different water matrices. Dynamic fixed-bed column experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions reaches 377.4 mg/g, and the Yoon-Nelson model accurately describes the adsorption process and breakthrough curve. Through experiments, FTIR, and XPS analyses, we propose a reasonable binding mechanism between CCBA-2 and metal cations, involving electrostatic attraction and chemical chelation between Cu(II) and the functional groups of the aerogel. CCBA-2 saturated with Cu(II) ions can be successfully regenerated by elution with 1 M HNO3, with only a slight decrease in adsorption efficiency (5.3%) after 5 adsorption–desorption cycles. Therefore, CCBA-2 offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material that can be considered as a viable alternative for the green and efficient removal of toxic Cu(II) ions from wastewater. Water-induced strength deterioration of rock mass is a crucial factor for rock slope instability. To better show the degradation process of rock slope water–rock interaction, we used bentonite as a water-sensitive regulator to build a new rock-like material that matches the features of water-induced strength degradation based on the cement-gypsum bonded materials. Twenty-five schemes of the material mixture proportion were designed using the orthogonal design method considering four factors with five variable levels, and a variety of experiments were conducted to obtain physico-mechanical parameters. In addition, one group of rock-like material proportion was selected and applied to the large-scale physical model test. The experiment results reveal that: (1) The failure mode of this rock-like material is highly similar to that of natural rock masses, and the physico-mechanical parameters vary over a wide range; (2) The bentonite content has a significant influence on the density, elastic modulus, and tensile strength of rock-like materials; (3) It is feasible to obtain the regression equation based on the linear regression analysis to determine the proportion of rock-like material; (4) Through application, the new rock-like material can effectively simulate or reveal the startup mechanism and instability characteristics of rock slopes under water-induced degradation. Understanding the main drivers of runoff components and contributions of precipitation and temperature have important implications for water-limited inland basins, where snow and glacier melt provide essential inputs to surface runoff. To quantify the impact of temperature and precipitation changes on river runoff in the Tarim River basin (TRB), the Hydrologiska Byrans Vattenbalansavdelning (HBV)-light model, which contains a glacier routine process, was applied to analyze the change in runoff composition. Runoff in the headstream parts of the TRB was more sensitive to temperature than to precipitation. In the TRB, overall, rainfall generated 41.22% of the total runoff, while snow and glacier meltwater generated 20.72% and 38.06%, respectively. These values indicate that temperature exerted more major effects on runoff than did precipitation. Runoff compositions were different in the various subbasins and may have been caused by different glacier coverages. The runoff volumes generated by rainfall, snowmelt, glacier melt was almost equal in the Aksu River subbasin. In the Yarkand and Hotan River subbasins, glacier meltwater was the main supplier of runoff, accounting for 46.72% and 58.73%, respectively. In the Kaidu-Kongque River subbasin, 80.86% was fed by rainfall and 19.14% was fed by snowmelt. In the TRB, runoff generated by rainfall was the dominant component in spring, autumn, winter, while glacier melt runoff was the dominant component in summer. Runoff in the TRB significantly increased during 1961–2016; additionally, 56.49% of the increase in runoff was contributed by temperature changes, and 43.51% was contributed by precipitation changes. In spring, the runoff increase in the TRB was mainly caused by the precipitation increase, opposite result in summer and autumn. Contribution of temperature was negative in winter. Our findings have important implications for water resource management in high mountainous regions and for similar river basins in which melting glaciers strongly impact the hydrological cycle. Based on historical land use for eight periods from 1980 to 2020 and the projected land use under seven Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs: SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP4-3.4, SSP4-6.0, and SSP5-8.5) from 2021 to 2100, we conducted a study on past and future land use changes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This work aims to reveal the land use changes during the carbon peak (2021–2040) and carbon neutrality (2051–2070) periods and at the end of the 21st century (2081–2100). The results show that: (1) in the historical period (1980–2020), the land use types in the QTP were grassland (1475×103 km2, 58.2%), barren land (685×103 km2, 27.0%), forest land (243×103 km2, 9.6%), water (114×103 km2, 4.5%), cropland (18.6×103 km2, 0.7%) and urban land (0.3×103 km2, 0.01%). (2) Relative to the baseline period (1995–2014), the area of grassland is projected to decrease by 0.7% (SSP4-6.0)–5.4% (SSP2-4.5) (0.5–3.9% of the total area of the QTP), 2.8% (SSP4-6.0)–12.5% (SSP3-7.0) (2.1–9.4% of the total area of the QTP) and 6.1% (SSP4-6.0)–21.7% (SSP4-3.4) (4.6–16.4% of the total area of the QTP) in the future three periods. In contrast, the forest land area is projected to increase, by approximately 2.5% (SSP4-6.0) to 30.1% (SSP3-7.0) (0.3–4.3% of the total area of the QTP), 9.2% (SSP4-6.0) to 56.5% (SSP2-4.5) (1.3–8.0% of the total area of the QTP), and 21.2% (SSP4-6.0) to 72.8% (SSP2-4.5) (3.0–10.2% of the total area of the QTP) in the future three periods, respectively. (3) Approximately 0.4 (SSP4-6.0) to 6.9% (SSP5-8.5), 0.9 (SSP4-6.0) to 2.7% (SSP4-3.4), and 0.04 (SSP5-8.5) to 3.5% (SSP1-1.9) of land is expected to convert from grassland to forest land in the future three periods, respectively. As an internal forcing of the earth climate system, soil moisture (SM) significantly influences the water and energy cycle by controlling evapotranspiration and terrestrial solar energy. The current study used observed precipitation, remotely sensed SM, and reanalysis of atmosphere and land parameters to assess the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) precipitation variability due to meridional SM oscillations across China. A generalized linear method, namely coupled manifold technique (CMT) for assessing the reciprocal forcing between two climate fields and numerical simulations are applied to SM and EAM precipitation. We find that the EAM precipitation interannual variability between north and south China significantly correlates with SM meridional oscillation. The CMT results further showed that SM forcing has a significant (99% confidence) influence on the EAM precipitation explaining about 0.40 of the variance ratio in north and south China. The EAM and SM composite analysis show that the wetter (drier) north (south) oscillates the EAM precipitation over the north (south) of China and vice versa due to SM thermal controls. We then used control and sensitivity simulations with SM observations to further validate the findings implying that SM can potentially improve the interannual EAM forecast skills. The model results show that a wetter (drier) north (south) results in negative (positive) sensible heat (latent heat) anomalies that impact the boundary layer and propagate to change the meridional atmospheric heating profile. When positive (negative) SM anomalies exist over northern (southern) China, the zonal easterlies and extratropical westerlies move to north China causing above-normal precipitation that descends into southern China, suppressing subtropical westerlies and precipitation in southern China. On the contrary, a dry (wet) north (south) favors intensified subtropical westerlies and precipitation in southern China. The tensile strength of loess is closely related to geological disasters. As eco-friendly materials, biopolymers have an excellent strengthening effect on the mechanical properties of soil. The effect of different initial dry densities and xanthan gum (XG) contents on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of XG-treated loess was studied with a series of microscopic tests and splitting tensile tests based on the particle image velocimetry technique. The results show that the XG became concentrated and agglomerated during dehydration, forming bridge links between soil particles and covering their surfaces. The XG-treated loess had a significant concentration of micropores and mesopores, with greater peak pore size distribution values than untreated loess. The specimens' load–displacement curves with different XG contents and initial dry densities showed strain-softening. The displacement vector field indicated that specimens' primary cracks were radial–vertical, and the secondary cracks were well-developed. The strain-softening phenomenon was more significant with increased XG content and initial dry density, and the specimens' splitting tensile strength and brittleness increased. XG treatment gave the soils stronger cementation and a denser structure, helping to increase strength and brittleness. Soil organic carbon (SOC) changes under future climate warming are difficult to quantify in situ. Here we apply an innovative approach combining space-for-time substitution with meta-analysis to SOC measurements in 113,013 soil profiles across the globe to estimate the effect of future climate warming on steady-state SOC stocks. We find that SOC stock will reduce by 6.0 ± 1.6% (mean±95% confidence interval), 4.8 ± 2.3% and 1.3 ± 4.0% at 0–0.3, 0.3–1 and 1–2 m soil depths, respectively, under 1 °C air warming, with additional 4.2%, 2.2% and 1.4% losses per every additional 1 °C warming, respectively. The largest proportional SOC losses occur in boreal forests. Existing SOC level is the predominant determinant of the spatial variability of SOC changes with higher percentage losses in SOC-rich soils. Our work demonstrates that warming induces more proportional SOC losses in topsoil than in subsoil, particularly from high-latitudinal SOC-rich systems. The response of soil organic carbon to climate warming may be soil depth-dependent, but remains unquantified in situ. Landslide susceptibility assessment is crucial to the development of appropriate strategies to mitigate the risk of landslide fatalities and economic losses. The selection of spatial extent for non-landslide samples has an important role in the statistical-based landslide susceptibility modelling (LSM). In this study, two different non-landslides sampling areas (the entire area and the mountainous area of ​​Anhui Province, China) were designed to explore the influences of the different spatial extent for non-landslides sampling on LSM. Six categories of influencing factors including climatic, morphological, geological, hydrological, vegetation, and human activities were considered. The dominant influencing factors that are more closely related to the distribution of historical landslides were selected based on the GeoDetector. The landslide inventory samples and the non-landslide samples generated on two selected areas were divided into a training set (70%) and a validation set (30%) for establishing the entire area LR model (EaeraLR) and the mountainous area LR model (MareaLR) based on the logistic regression (LR) model. The performance of the models was evaluated by the confusion matrix and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). The results showed that the EareaLR model outperformed the MareaLR model by various evaluation metrics and the appearance of the final landslide susceptibility map. Hence, we conclude that the potential influence of the spatial extent of the non-landslide sample selection needs to be taken into account while comparing the reliability of different data-driven landslide susceptibility models. Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant human fungal pathogen responsible for nosocomial outbreaks worldwide. Although considerable progress has increased our understanding of the biological and clinical aspects of C. auris, its interaction with the host immune system is only now beginning to be investigated in-depth. Here, we compare the innate immune responses induced by C. auris BJCA001 and Candida albicans SC5314 in vitro and in vivo. Our results indicate that C. auris BJCA001 appears to be less immunoinflammatory than C. albicans SC5314, and this differential response correlates with structural features of the cell wall. The multicomponent oxides (Ce1/2Zr1/2)1−x(La1/3Y1/3Gd1/3)xO2−σ with different elements ratio (x = 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, 0.75, 0.9; abbreviated as CZLYGx) were prepared by co-precipitation method. XRD patterns shows that the compostion with x = 0.9 exhibits mixing crystal structure of Fm-3 m and Ia-3 phases, while the others possess single-phase fluorite structures. Transmission electron microscopy shows that nanoparticles of CZLYG90 with a particle size of about 34 nm were synthesized. The competitive relationship between entropy and enthalpy are analyzed, low mixing enthalpy and high configurational entropy benefit the stabilization of single-phase multicomponent oxide. The direct band gap value of CZLYGx increases from 3.51 eV to 3.99 eV with x increasing, which exhibits promising candidate as an optical material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gridded distribution of future economy plays an important role in climate change impact assessment. The trend of the output values of different industries is crucial for a variety of planning and design processes. Under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) global framework, the multidimensional model and Cobb-Douglas production model with localized population and economic parameters are used to develop the annual provincial population and value-added of primary, secondary and tertiary industries in China from 2020 to 2100. The most recently implemented fertility-promoting and industrial planning policies in China are considered in our projections. We build multiple models to evaluate the impact of different types of land use on the value-added of primary, secondary and tertiary industries and then gridded the projected value-added to a 5′ × 5′ resolution, based on recorded county-level economic statistics and gridded land use. The reliability of estimations is verified against 2011–2019 statistical data and multiple published datasets. The high-resolution economic dataset is expected to contribute greatly to national and regional climate change impact, adaptation, and vulnerability studies. Stemonae Radix (dried roots of Stemona japonica (Bl.) Miq., Stemona sessilifolia (Miq.) Miq., and Stemona tuberosa Lour.), a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is also known as "Baibu" (Chinese: 百部). Stemonae Radix has a wide range of pharmacological effects, mainly used to treat respiratory diseases and as an insecticide. In this review, with the help of both published materials (such as ancient and modern books, monographs on medicinal plants, and the pharmacopoeia of different countries) and electronic databases (such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar), we have summarized the up-to-date research progress in botany, traditional application, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity, and quality control, and discussed the research prospects and development direction of Stemonae Radix and its origin plants. Up to now, more than 170 compounds were isolated and identified from the three official species of Stemonae Radix, mainly including Stemona alkaloids, Stemona stilbenoids and other components. This medicine has also exhibited pharmacological activities, including antitussive, antiviral, insecticidal, antitumor, antioxidant, and therapeutic effects on lung diseases. However, pharmacological reports most often attribute activities to various extracts, rather than specific compounds. This hampers the establishment of a connection between chemical constituents and pharmacological activities, resulting in a difficulty to identify the major active compounds. With the continuous development of evolutionary computing, many excellent algorithms have emerged, which are applied in all walks of life to solve various practical problems. In this paper, two hybrid fish, bird and insect algorithms based on different architectures are proposed to solve the optimal coverage problem in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm combines the characteristics of three algorithms, namely, particle swarm optimization algorithm, Phasmatodea population evolution algorithm and fish migration optimization algorithm. The new algorithm has the advantages of the three algorithms. In order to prove the effectiveness of the algorithm, we first test it on 28 benchmark functions. The results show that the two hybrid fish, bird and insect algorithms with different architectures have significant advantages. Then we apply the proposed algorithm to solve the coverage problem of wireless sensor networks through experimental simulation. The experimental results show the advantages of our proposed algorithm and prove that our proposed hybrid fish, bird and insect algorithm is suitable for solving the coverage problem of wireless sensor networks. In order to understand the effects of different patterns of prefabricated fractures and grain size compositions on the fracture characteristics, acoustic emission characteristics and mechanical properties of the rock masses. We conducted compression shear experiments on square rock masses with different modes of prefabricated fractures and different grain size compositions. The experimental results showed that five fracture patterns were produced in specimens with different fracture patterns. The first fracture specimen, the fourth fracture specimen and the fifth fracture specimen were all brittle fractures. The other four specimens were not brittle fractures. The fracture patterns, fracture processes and mechanical characteristics of the different fracture pattern rock masses were revealed. The lowest peak shear stresses were found in specimens consisting of two grain size ranges and the highest peak shear stresses were found in specimens consisting of three grain size ranges. The highest shear displacements corresponding to the peak shear stresses were found in the specimens consisting of three particle size ranges. The effect of different grain size compositions on the peak shear stress and its corresponding shear displacement of the rock mass was revealed. Specimens consisting of one grain size range produced significant fracture and acoustic emission prior to the peak shear stress. The acoustic emission was jumped after the main fracture was formed. The specimen consisting of two grain size ranges produced fractures and strong acoustic emission characteristics after the peak shear stress. Thereafter, fracture reappeared and the acoustic emission signature increased again. As the specimen entered the residual strength phase, the acoustic emission was jumpy. Specimens consisting of three grain size ranges were brittle fractures with weak acoustic emission characteristics after the main fracture has formed. The cumulative energy of shear acoustic emission was the highest for a rock mass consisting of three grain size ranges. The rock mass consisting of three grain size ranges was also the strongest and most difficult to fracture because the grains were more fully embedded in each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Grain size composition, crack pattern, and crack length have a significant influence on the crack characteristics, mechanical characteristics, and acoustic emission characteristics of rock masses. In this paper, the crack characteristics, mechanical characteristics, and acoustic emission characteristics of rock masses with different grain size compositions, different crack patterns, and different crack lengths were investigated under uniaxial compression. The rock masses were made of rock-like materials. The crack initiation locations and crack propagation directions were different for a specimen comprised of one grain size range compared with specimens comprised of two or three grain size ranges. The specimens comprised of one and three grain size ranges crack progressively. The specimen comprised of two-grain size ranges brittle fracture. The highest peak axial load was found in the specimens comprised of one grain size range. The results showed that tensile wing crack, anti-tensile wing crack, transverse shear crack, compression induced tensile crack, and surface spalling were produced in specimens with different crack orientations. The rock mass with 2 cm long crack started to produce cracks from the tip of the crack extending to the top and bottom surface, soon forming through cracks. The rock was brittle fracture. The axial load reached the maximum and then fell rapidly. The acoustic emission energy reached a rapid maximum and then decreased rapidly. The rock mass with 3 cm long fissures started to produce cracks that only extended from the tip of the fissures to the top surface but not to the bottom surface. The rock mass was progressively fractured. The axial load was progressively decreasing. The acoustic emission energy also rose and fell rapidly several times as the rock mass was progressively fractured. Different rock crack lengths led to different crack processes and crack patterns, resulting in very different acoustic emission characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Balenine is one of the endogenous imidazole dipeptides, mainly found in the muscle of marine animals. In this study we focused on the safety evaluation and physiological function of dietary balenine derived from opah Lampris guttatus in skeletal muscle of mice. There were no significant differences among different concentrations (0–1%) of balenine diet in the basic data included the weight of body weight, food intake, skeletal muscle and some organs, indicating that less than 1% dietary balenine showed no side effects. The cross-sectional area of myofibers in the group fed a balenine diet was similar to that observed in the group fed a normal diet. In physiological function, supplementation of balenine significantly induced the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4, which are related to mitochondrial biogenesis and lipid metabolism. Moreover, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the skeletal muscle of the group fed a balenine diet was significantly increased, compared with that of the group fed a normal diet, whereas the supplementation of balenine did not affect the mRNA transcription of SODs in skeletal muscle. Positive-stranded RNA viruses usually remodel the host endomembrane system to form virus-induced intracellular vesicles for replication during infections. The genus Potyvirus of the family Potyviridae represents the largest number of positive single-stranded RNA viruses, and its members cause great damage to crop production worldwide. Although potyviruses have a wide host range, each potyvirus infects a relatively limited number of host species. Phylogenesis and host range analysis can divide potyviruses into monocot-infecting and dicot-infecting groups, suggesting that they differ in their infection mechanisms, probably during replication. Comprehensive studies on the model dicot-infecting turnip mosaic virus have shown that the 6K2-induced replication vesicles are derived from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and subsequently target chloroplasts for viral genome replication. However, the replication site of monocot-infecting potyviruses is unknown. In this study, we show that the precursor 6K2-VPg-Pro polyproteins of dicot-infecting potyviruses and monocot-infecting potyviruses cluster phylogenetically in two separate groups. With a typical gramineae-infecting potyvirus—sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV)—we found that replicative double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) forms aggregates in the cytoplasm but does not associate with chloroplasts. SCMV 6K2-VPg-Pro-induced vesicles colocalize with replicative dsRNA. Moreover, SCMV 6K2-VPg-Pro-induced structures target multiple intracellular organelles, including the ER, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, and peroxisomes, and have no evident association with chloroplasts. Currently, person re-identification (re-ID) has been applied in many public security applications. Yet owing to the big visual appearance changes of the same identity under different views, re-ID still faces many challenges. To reduce the intra-person discrepancy, extracting more power feature representations from pedestrian images is a reasonable solution. We propose a cross-view kernel collaborative representation based classification (CV-KCRC) method for person re-ID in our work. Our method aims to find more robust and discriminative feature representations that embody cross-view information to enhance the identification capability of features. We map the image features into a high dimensional feature space first and then use view-specific projection matrices to project the high dimensional features into a common low dimensional subspace. We expect that in the shared subspace the codings of same person from different views have the highest similarity and better performance can be achieved. Precipitation fluctuations are continuously threatening the environment and may cause huge economic losses. In present study, the precipitation over China has been evaluated under five principal shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) scenarios during 2015–2099 based on eight CMIP6 models bias-corrected by the method of Equidistant Cumulative Distribution Functions. The results showed that (1) the simulated precipitation in China was in good agreement with observed precipitation for the eight CMIP6 models during 1961–2014, especially for the UKESM1-0-LL and MIROC6. However, the simulated annual mean precipitation has been significantly overvalued in the Southwest River basin (> 50%), while it was undervalued in the higher elevations of the Northwest River basin (< − 60%); (2) the annual mean precipitation will show a fluctuating upward trend during 2015–2099 over China under all the SSPs scenarios for the eight CMIP6 models. The rate of precipitation increase over north China will be higher than that in south China, especially in the Northwest River basin (reach 57.44% in the 2090s under the SSP5-8.5 for the ensemble mean). This increase of the precipitation in north China might alleviate the shortage of water there, but will not change the pattern of more rain in the south and less in the north; (3) in the southeastern basins, the precipitation of the multi-model ensemble (MME) and MIROC6 during 2011–2020 will be lower than that of 1961–2010 (− 6.53 to − 0.06%) under all SSPs scenarios. While the precipitation will increase obviously under all the SSPs scenarios, especially for the SSP5-8.5 scenario after the year of 2060; (4) the bias of the MME was much lower than that of individual CMIP6 models, and the bias of lower SSPs scenarios will be relatively lower. Generally, uncertainty ranges of precipitation fluctuations in north China (15.31–79.26%) will be higher than those in south China (16.06–7.55%). These findings revealed the projections and uncertainties of CMIP6 precipitation over China, which will be helpful for a better understanding of the future evolution of precipitation in China at large scale and in other regions of the world. The floods caused by the extreme precipitation in the Yangtze River basin (YRB) and Murray-Darling River basin (MDRB), the largest basins in China and Australia, have significant impacts on the society and regional economies. Based on the spatial-temporal analysis of the daily precipitation extremes (DPEs) during 1982–2016, we found that for both basins, the whole-basin-type DPEs have the highest proportion and a synchronous DPE interannual variation characteristic exists in the two basins, with the 3-yr running correlation coefficient of the annual DPE days (DPEDs) reaching almost 0.7 (significant at the 0.01 level). The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is one of the most significant climate disturbance factors in the world, plays an important role in modulating the variability of the DPEs in the two basins. Singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis revealed that both the YRB and the MDRB's whole-basin-type DPEs are closely coupled with the procedure that the preceding winter eastern Pacific (EP)-type El Niño faded to a central Pacific (CP)-type La Niña. This means that the DPEs in the YRB and MDRB may synchronously occur more frequently when the above process occurs. Owing to the atmosphere-ocean interaction from the east-west dipole sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly pattern, the atmospheric circulation disturbance exhibits a pattern in which the equatorial eastern Pacific region is a mass source anomaly with a higher pressure, drier air, and weaker convection, while the equatorial western Pacific region is a mass sink anomaly with a lower pressure, wetter air, and stronger convection. Moreover, two wave trains that originated from the tropical western Pacific were found to extend to the YRB and MDRB. The interaction between the wave train's interphase dynamics and water vapor transport disturbance results in the ascent conditions and enhanced water vapor transport, which leads to the synchronous occurrence of DPEs in the YRB and MDRB on an interannual scale. Climate change significantly affects the environmental and socioeconomic conditions in northwest China. Here we evaluate the ability of five general circulation models (GCMs) from 6th phase of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP6) to reproduce regional temperature and precipitation over northwest China from 1961 to 2014, and project the future temperature and precipitation during 2021 to 2100 under SSPs-RCPs (SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP4-3.4, SSP4-6.0 and SSP5-8.5). The results show that the CMIP6 models can simulate temperature better than precipitation. Projections show that the annual mean temperature will further increase under different SSPs-RCPs scenarios in the 21st century. Future climate changes in the near-term (2021–2040), mid-term (2041–2060) and long-term (2081–2100) are analyzed relative to the reference period (1995–2014). In the long term, warming will be significantly higher than the near and mid-terms. In the long term, annual mean temperature will increase by 1.4°C, 1.9°C, 3.3°C, 5.5°C, 2.7°C, 3.8°C and 6.0°C under SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP4-3.4, SSP4-6.0 and SSP5-8.5, respectively. Spatially, warming in the Junggar Basin will be higher than those in the Tarim Basin. Seasonally, the maximum warming zone will be in the mountainous areas of Tarim Basin during spring and autumn, in the southern basin during winter, and in the east during summer. Precipitation shows an increasing trend under different SSPs-RCPs in the 21st century. In the long term, increase in precipitation will be significantly higher than in the near and mid-terms. Increase in annual precipitation in the long term will be 4.1% under SSP1-1.9, 13.9% under SSP1-2.6, 28.4% under SSP2-4.5, 35.2% under SSP3-7.0, 6.9% under SSP4-3.4, 8.9% under SSP4-6.0, and 27.3% under SSP5-8.5 relative to the reference period of 1995–2014. Spatially, precipitation increase will be higher in the south than the north, especially higher in mountainous regions than the basin under SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5. Seasonally, highest increase can be expected for winter, followed by spring, with significant increase in mountainous regions of southern Tarim Basin. Climate change has substantial impacts on regional hydrology in the major river basins. To figure out such latent hydrological impacts of changing climate, more reliable hydrological simulations are imperative. In this study, we evaluated the impacts of climate change on hydrological regime in the Upper Yangtze River Basin based on four downscaled and bias-corrected Global Climate Model outputs from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 under four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5) driving three hydrological models. Two model evaluation approaches were applied: simple and comprehensive. The comprehensive approach was used to evaluate models in the historical period, optimizing objective function at four gauges, and hydrological models were weighted for impact assessment based on their performance. In such a way, projected streamflow time series are obtained under different emission scenarios. Results show that the annual average discharge is projected to increase by 4.1–10.5% under the RCP scenarios at the end of twenty-first century relative to the reference period (1970–1999). Moreover, the high flow is projected to increase and the low flow to decrease indicating a higher probability of flood and drought occurrence in the basin. The severity of floods and droughts may increase. In comparison with the simple one-site model evaluation approach, the comprehensive method reveals that the anticipated extreme flow events would be less severe, and annual mean discharge slightly lower. The projected results imply that application of the comprehensive model evaluation approach could narrow the simulated spreads of projections significantly, and might provide more credible results. Although Alteromonas is ubiquitous in the marine environment, very little is known about Alteromonas phages, with only ten, thus far, being isolated and reported on. In this study, a novel double-stranded DNA phage, Alteromonas phage P24, which infects Alteromonas macleodii, was isolated from the coastal waters off Qingdao. Alteromonas phage P24 has a siphoviral morphology, with an icosahedral head, 61 ± 1 nm in diameter, and a tail length of 105 ± 1 nm. Alteromonas phage P24 contains lipids. It has an optimal temperature and pH for growth of 20℃ and 5–7, respectively. A one-step growth curve shows a latent period of 55 min, a rise period of 65 min, and an average burst size of approximately 147 virions per cell. Alteromonas phage P24 has the genome of 46,945 bp with 43.80% GC content and 74 open reading frames (ORFs) without tRNA. The results of the phylogenetic tree, based on the mcp and terL genes, show that Alteromonas phage P24 is closely related to Aeromonas phage phiARM81ld. Meanwhile, phylogenetic analysis based on the whole genome of P24 indicates that it forms a unique viral sub-cluster within Siphoviridae. A new cyanophage, S-B05, infecting a phycoerythrin-enriched (PE-type) Synechococcus strain was isolated by the liquid infection method, and its morphology and genetic features were examined. Phylogenetic analysis and morphological observation confirmed that S-B05 belongs to the family Myoviridae of the order Caudovirales. Its genome was fully sequenced, and found to be 208,857 bp in length with a G + C content of 39.9%. It contained 280 potential open reading frames and 123 conserved domains. Ninety-eight functional genes responsible for cyanophage structuring and packaging, DNA replication and regulation, and photosynthesis were identified, as well as genes encoding 172 hypothetical proteins. The genome of S-B05 is most similar to that of Prochlorococcus phage P-TIM68. Homologues of open reading frames of S-B05 can be found in various marine environments, as revealed by comparison of the S-B05 genome sequence to sequences in marine viral metagenomic databases. The presence of auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) related to photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, and phosphorus assimilation, as well as the phylogenetic relationships based on AMGs and the complete genome sequence, reflect the phage-host interaction mechanism or the specific adaptation strategy of the host to environmental conditions. The genome sequence information reported here will provide an important basis for further study of the adaptive evolution and ecological role of cyanophages and their hosts in the marine environment. The countries throughout the Belt and Road region account for more than 60% of the world's population and half of the global economy. Future changes in this area will have significant influences on the global economic growth, industrial structure and resource allocation. In this study, the proportion of the urban population to the total population and the gross domestic product were used to represent the levels of urbanization and economic development, respectively. The population, urbanization and economic levels of the Belt and Road countries for 2020–2050 were projected under the framework of the IPCC's shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), and the following conclusions are drawn. (1) The population, urbanization and economic levels in the Belt and Road region will likely increase under all five pathways. The population will increase by 2%–8%/10a during 2020–2050 and reach 5.0–6.0 billion in 2050. Meanwhile, the urbanization rate will increase by 1.4%–7.5%/10a and reach 49%–75%. The GDP will increase by 17%–34%/10a and reach 134–243 trillion USD. (2) Large differences will appear under different scenarios. The SSP1 and SSP5 pathways demonstrate relatively high urbanization and economic levels, but the population size is comparatively smaller; SSP3 shows the opposite trend. Meanwhile, the economy develops slowly under SSP4, but it has a relatively high urbanization level, while SSP2 exhibits an intermediate trend. (3) In 2050, the population will increase relative to 2016 in most countries, and population size in the fastest growing country in Central Asia and the Middle East countries will be more than double. Urbanization will develop rapidly in South Asia, West Asia and Central Asia, and will increase by more than 150% in the fastest growing countries. Aridity index reflects the exchanges of energy and water between the land surface and the atmosphere, and its variation can be used to forecast drought and flood patterns, which makes it of great significance for agricultural production. The ratio of potential evapotranspiration and precipitation is applied to analyse the spatial and temporal distributions of the aridity index in the Belt and Road region under the 1.5°C and 2.0°C global warming scenarios on the basis of outputs from four downscaled global climate models. The results show that: (1) Under the 1.5°C warming scenario, the area-averaged aridity index will be similar to that in 1986–2005 (around 1.58), but the changes vary spatially. The aridity index will increase by more than 5% in Central-Eastern Europe, north of West Asia, the monsoon region of East Asia and northwest of Southeast Asia, while it is projected to decrease obviously in the southeast of West Asia. Regarding the seasonal scale, spring and winter will be more arid in South Asia, and the monsoon region of East Asia will be slightly drier in summer compared with the reference period. While, West Asia will be wetter in all seasons, except winter. (2) Relative to 1986–2005, both areal averaged annual potential evapotranspiration and precipitation are projected to increase, and the spatial variation of aridity index will become more obvious as well at the 2.0°C warming level. Although the aridity index over the entire region will be maintained at approximately 1.57 as that in 1.5°C, the index in Central- Eastern Europe, north of West Asia and Central Asia will grow rapidly at a rate of more than 20%, while that in West Siberia, northwest of China, the southern part of South Asia and West Asia will show a declining trend. At the seasonal scale, the increase of the aridity index in Central-Eastern Europe, Central Asia, West Asia, South Asia and the northern part of Siberia in winter will be obvious, and the monsoon region in East Asia will be drier in both summer and autumn. (3) Under the scenario of an additional 0.5°C increase in global temperature from 1.5°C to 2.0°C, the aridity index will increase significantly in Central Asia and north of West Asia but decrease in Southeast Asia and Central Siberia. Seasonally, the aridity index in the Belt and Road region will slightly increase in all other seasons except spring. Central Asia will become drier annually at a rate of more than 20%. The aridity index in South Asia will increase in spring and winter, and that in East Asia will increase in autumn and winter. (4) To changes of the aridity index, the attribution of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration will vary regionally. Precipitation will be the major influencing factor over southern West Asia, southern South Asia, Central-Eastern Siberia, the non-monsoon region of East Asia and the border between West Asia and Central Asia, while potential evapotranspiration will exert greater effects over Central-Eastern Europe, West Siberia, Central Asia and the monsoon region of East Asia. A novel Vibrio phage, P23, belonging to the family Siphoviridae was isolated from the surface water of the Yellow Sea, China. The complete genome of this phage was determined. A one-step growth curve showed that the latent period was approximately 30 min, the burst size was 24 PFU/cell, and the rise period was 20 min. The phage is host specific and is stable over a range of pH (5–10) and temperatures (4–65 °C). Transmission electron microscopy showed that phage P23 can be categorized into the Siphoviridae family, with an icosahedral head of 60 nm and a long noncontractile tail of 144 nm. The genome consisted of a linear, double-stranded 40.063 kb DNA molecule with 42.5% G+C content and 72 putative open reading frames (ORFs) without tRNA. The predicted ORFs were classified into six functional groups, including DNA replication, regulation and nucleotide metabolism, transcription, phage packaging, phage structure, lysis, and hypothetical proteins. The Vibrio phage P23 genome is a new marine Siphoviridae-family phage genome that provides basic information for further molecular research on interaction mechanisms between bacteriophages and their hosts. Blood is deposited in fish muscle during storage, and this deposition accelerates the deterioration of flesh quality. We have examined the effect of blood deposition on the degradation of collagen fibrils and fibers in the ordinary muscle of yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata). In this study we compared changes in collagen fibrils and fibers in the upper sides and undersides of yellowtails killed by two different methods (spinal cord destruction with blood removal and suffocation in air without blood removal [SA]). Tests of breaking strength showed that ordinary muscle from the underside of fish in the SA group (SA-under)had a slightly low value than the other groups. Histological observations showed thinner collagen fibers and looser structures in the SA-under groups than in the other groups during storage. In addition, blood-derived gelatinolytic activities were higher in muscle from the the underside of the SA group than in other groups. These results indicate that blood contains gelatinolytic enzymes and that when blood is deposited to the underside from the upper side of fish, these enzymes may participate in accelerating the degradation of collagen fibers during storage. Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important process of water and energy exchanges between land and atmosphere. In this study, a processed-based GLEAM (global land-surface evaporation: the Amsterdam methodology) satellite assimilation product has been validated in the Yangtze River valley on the observations of flux and the water balance method. The changes of total ET and its components, well as the associated dynamics, have been analyzed for the period of 1980–2014. The total ET shows significant increasing trends especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley, which is mostly due to the increase of transpiration. The spatial and temporal dynamics of total ET are analyzed with respect to temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation. The spatial pattern of total ET in the Yangtze River valley is found to be jointly determined by temperature and precipitation. As for the temporal dynamics, precipitation plays the dominant role in total ET in the source regions of the valley. While in the most regions, solar radiation is suggested to be a main controller, in the positive manner, of total ET. Soil–water characteristic curves (SWCCs) play a key role in unsaturated soil mechanics. A series of SWCC tests on Yudong silt with different compaction degrees and drying–wetting cycles were conducted using a GCTS pressure plate apparatus. The test results showed that the SWCCs exhibited hysteresis during the drying–wetting cycles and were affected by the compaction degree. The hysteresis area decreased with increasing drying–wetting cycles. The hysteresis area was obviously affected by the first cycle. The second and third cycles had less obvious effects compared with the first one, but their effects could still be seen. The SWCC's parameters of Van Genuchten model were obtained by using a Lsqacurve fit function. On basis of the relationships among the fitting parameters, compaction degree, and drying–wetting cycles, a practical and novel approach was proposed to predict SWCCs for Yudong silt under different compaction degrees and drying–wetting cycles. The microstructure changes associated with variations in dry density or compaction degree have been photographed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM results show that the increase in dry density or compaction degree would change the macropore and surface roughness of aggregates, which will produce greater interaction among aggregates, and thus increases the air-entry value. In this paper, uniaxial compression tests and digital image correlation (DIC) are combined to test samples of artificial rocks manufactured with preexisting cracks at different inclinations. The influence of these fractures on the mechanical properties of the rock and the deformation field in the rock were studied by recording and analyzing the forms of fracturing at specimen failure, crack propagation modes, crack initiation angles, and other features. The results show that the rupture modes of the specimens can be divided into two types: splitting and shear slip. The corresponding fracture types are wing fractures and secondary fractures. As the inclination angle of the prefabricated crack is increased, the wing crack propagation angle first decreases and then increases; the propagation angle is smallest when the inclination angle is 30°. The peak stress and the crack initiation stress ratios increases with the increase of the prefabricated fracture inclination angle.As a specimen is failing, the displacement in the specimen is mainly on the left side of the slip surface composed of a prefabricated crack and a wing crack and the lateral strain is mainly concentrated around the slip surface. This time interval (the time between peak stress and first appearance of a crack on the specimen's surface) and the magnitude of the peak stress display a good positive correlation. A novel cyanophage, S-B64, which can infect marine Synechococcus WH8102, was isolated from the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea using the liquid serial dilution method. Morphological study by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cyanophage belongs to Podovirus. It's genome, which was completely sequenced, contains a 151,867 bp DNA molecule with a G+C content of 41.78% and 186 potential open reading frames. The functions of the genes include cyanophage structure, cyanophage packaging, DNA replication and regulation. After primary characterization, it was found that the latent period is about 3 h, and it lysed after 8 h, the burst size is about 23 virions per cell. Energy storage technology is critical for intelligent power grids. It has great significance for the large-scale integration of new energy sources into the power grid and the transition of the energy structure. Based on the existing technology of isothermal compressed air energy storage, this paper presents a design scheme of isothermal compressed air energy storage power station, which uses liquid to compress air, hydraulic piston to transfer potential energy, hydraulic turbine to generate electricity at constant pressure, and liquid occupancy to store the gas at constant pressure. Then the technical features and control strategies of its internal temperature control subsystem are studied, and the mathematical model is constructed. A hierarchical relay operation is put forward to address the actual construction and operational requirements of compressed air energy storage power plants. Mobile phones are rapidly becoming the most widespread and popular form of communication; thus, they are also the most important attack target of malware. The amount of malware in mobile phones is increasing exponentially and poses a serious security threat. Google’s Android is the most popular smart phone platforms in the world and the mechanisms of permission declaration access control cannot identify the malware. In this paper, we proposed an ensemble machine learning system for the detection of malware on Android devices. More specifically, four groups of features including permissions, monitoring system events, sensitive API and permission rate are extracted to characterize each Android application (app). Then an ensemble random forest classifier is learned to detect whether an app is potentially malicious or not. The performance of our proposed method is evaluated on the actual data set using tenfold cross-validation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a highly accuracy of 89.91%. For further assessing the performance of our method, we compared it with the state-of-the-art support vector machine classifier. Ying Mai-2 Block of Tarim Oil Field is a karst fractured-vuggy reservoir. Along with the research on well location demonstration and recovery ratio improvement in the developing progress, the importance of fracture-vug unit division is gradually revealed. This paper presents an integrated method for establishing a fractured element/flow unit in the oil field and discusses its importance and its influence on future well location optimization. With more dynamic data from the oil field, this workflow can be reused to divide the unit during the whole life of the well. This paper begins with the understanding and characterization of involved reservoirs, then establishes a geological concept model and makes clear reservoir type, geometric boundary, reserves and aquifer energy of the fracture-vug unit. Dynamic and static data are used by multidisciplinary means to describe the fracture-vug unit, and reasonable recommendations are proposed on well testing for these reservoirs. A comprehensive evaluation on the fracture-vug combination model and dominant reservoir type is made based upon the flow experiments of a large-scale physical model in combination with production performance and well testing data. Based on this, the fracture-vug units in an individual well are divided using dynamic production characterization. Finally, the fracture-vug units for Ying Mai-2 Block are divided by seismic prediction and gridding judgment taking the units with well data as the standard, and thus a powerful guidance for the reservoir development at present stage is provided. In this paper, the intensity, area and duration of future droughts in China are analyzed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The SPI and SPEI are used to evaluate the simulation ability of drought characteristics with the regional climate model COSMO-CLM (CCLM). The projected intensity and duration of future drought events are analyzed for the period 2016-2050 under three different respective concentration pathways (RCPs). The simulated and projected drought events are analyzed by applying the intensity-area-duration method. The results show that CCLM has a robust capability to simulate the average drought characteristics, while some regional disparities are not well captured, mainly the simulation of more drought events of shorter duration in Northwest China. For the future period 2016-2050, more intense dryness conditions are projected for China. An increase in evapotranspiration is found all over China, while a reduction in precipitation is apparent in the southern river basins. The increase in evapotranspiration plays an important role in the changes of future droughts over the northern river basins and southern river basins. Under RCP2.6, drought events of longer duration and with higher frequency are projected for the southwest and southeast of China. Under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, a continuing tendency to more dry conditions is projected along a dryness band stretching from the southwest to the northeast of China. More frequent drought events of longer duration are projected in the southwestern river basins. For all future droughts, larger extents are projected, especially for events with long-term duration. The projected long-term drought events will occur more often and more severe than during the baseline period, and their central locations will likely shift towards Southeast China. In the discussion of climate impacts, 1.5 and 2 °C have become iconic values. This study examines the impacts of 1.5 and 2 °C global warming on water availability, runoff seasonality, and extreme monthly and daily runoff in two catchments, using the semi-distributed hydrological model Hydrologiska Byråns Vattenbalansavdelning-D, based on a combination of five global climate models (GCMs) and four representative concentration pathways (RCPs). Subsequently, quantitative assessments were made for projection uncertainties from GCMs and RCPs. The two catchments are the Yiluo River catchment (YLC) in northern China and the Beijiang River catchment (BJC) in southern China. The results indicate wetter flood seasons for YLC and warmer mean annual temperatures, drier springs, and more severe floods over long return periods (25 and 50 years) for both catchments. The change magnitude of most indicators is expected to be larger in YLC than in BJC. Mean annual temperatures in both catchments are expected to have smaller changes under the 1.5 °C scenario than under the 2.0 °C scenario. However, the change magnitude of the other hydrological variables is projected to be approximately equivalent for both catchments under both scenarios. Uncertainties of projected impacts from GCMs are generally larger than those from RCP scenarios, for both catchments and warming scenarios, with the exception of mean annual temperature of BJC. These findings indicate that effective measures are required to address increasing annual temperatures, more severe flood events (25- and 50-year return periods), and drier spring seasons in both catchments and wetter flood seasons in YLC. The impacts of climate change on streamflow in the upper Yangtze River basin were studied using four hydrological models driven by bias-corrected climate projections from five General Circulation Models under four Representative Concentration Pathways. The basin hydrological responses to climate forcing in future mid-century (2036-2065) and end-century (2070-2099) periods were assessed via comparison of simulation results in these periods to those in the reference period (1981-2010). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach was used to quantify the uncertainty sources associated with the climate inputs and hydrological model structures. Overall, the annual average discharge, seasonal high flow, and daily peak discharge were projected to increase in most cases in the twenty-first century but with considerable variability between models under the conditions of increasing temperature and a small to moderate increase in precipitation. Uncertainties in the projections increase over the time and are associated with hydrological model structures, but climate inputs represent the largest source of uncertainty in the upper Yangtze projections. Based on hourly rainfall observational data from 442 stations during 1960-2014, a regional frequency analysis of the annual maxima (AM) sub-daily rainfall series (1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-h rainfall, using a moving window approach) for eastern China was conducted. Eastern China was divided into 13 homogeneous regions: Northeast (NE1, NE2), Central (C), Central North (CN1, CN2), Central East (CE1, CE2, CE3), Southeast (SE1, SE2, SE3, SE4), and Southwest (SW). The generalized extreme value performed best for the AM series in regions NE, C, CN2, CE1, CE2, SE2, and SW, and the generalized logistic distribution was appropriate in the other regions. Maximum return levels were in the SE4 region, with value ranges of 80-270 mm (1-h to 24-h rainfall) and 108-390 mm (1-h to 24-h rainfall) for 20- and 100 yr, respectively. Minimum return levels were in the CN1 and NE1 regions, with values of 37-104 mm and 53-140 mm for 20 and 100 yr, respectively. Comparing return levels using the optimal and commonly used Pearson-III distribution, the mean return-level differences in eastern China for 1-24-h rainfall varied from −3-4 mm to −23-11 mm (−10%-10%) for 20-yr events, reaching −6-26 mm (−10%-30%) and −10-133 mm (−10%-90%) for 100-yr events. In view of the large differences in estimated return levels, more attention should be given to frequency analysis of sub-daily rainfall over China, for improved water management and disaster reduction. In this study, the intensity, area, and duration of droughts in China are analyzed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The SPI was calculated on monthly data for 530 meteorological stations in China for the period 1960-2013. The time series were analyzed for ten major hydrological regions of China, respectively. The relationships between the intensity and the area of droughts for a specific duration were analyzed by the intensity-area-duration method. The results show that areas with a significant trend in dryness can be found in a band reaching from the southwest to the northeast of China, while areas with significant trends in wetness are especially detected in the northern river basins in recent decades. In addition, for recent years (2000-2013), most of the ten major hydrological regions show opposite trends in the SPI when compared to the whole study period (1960-2013) except for the central and southwestern parts of China. This dryness/wetness trends are related to the intensity and duration of drought events, which have been stronger and lasted longer in the detected dryness band except for some northern river basins. A regional shift of drought centers is found from the northwest to the southeast within Central China. Moreover, a decreasing trend in drought area is observed, which might be related to the regional changes in precipitation pattern associated with the atmosphere-ocean interaction. Changes in the SST of the Tropical Pacific and the Tropical Indian Ocean may have resulted in frequent severe drought events of small areal extent in the central and southwestern parts of China. For the study period, the most severe droughts that covered large areas mainly occurred in the north and west of China during the mid-to-late twentieth century. However, in the early twenty-first century, the most severe droughts were located in the southwest of China covering areas less than 0.7 million km. Conclusively, drought areas show a decreasing tendency, while more intense droughts of longer duration have been experienced, especially in the south of China, in the last decades. In China, influential tropical cyclones (ITCs) are defined as those that cause significant national economic losses. Based on direct economic losses, socioeconomic data, and tropical cyclone track data from the National Climate Centre of the China Meteorological Administration and the National Bureau of Statistics, this study investigated 249 ITCs that occurred during 1984-2015. National economic losses directly attributable to each ITC were normalized by the Consumer Price Index to facilitate a comparison of annual variability, and the spatiotemporal distribution of ITC-related economic losses was analyzed using different statistical methods. The Pearson correlation method was used to analyze annual variations, while abrupt changes were detected by the Moving t test, and the Yamamoto and Mann-Kendall tests. The possibility of periodicity of ITC frequency and economic losses was investigated using Red-noise spectra and wavelet analysis. The results revealed that although 249 ITCs affected China during 1984-2015, no significant monotonic trend in annual frequency was detectable; however, a significant upward trend was found for strong ITCs (ITC intensity greater than that of typhoons). Among the 22 provinces affected, Guangdong Province in southern China has the highest frequency of ITCs. An abrupt change in the annual frequency of ITCs occurred in 2007, and a periodic 3-6-year pattern was detected. Annual direct economic losses during 1984-2015 were approximately 44.7 billion CNY, and they have increased at the rate of 1.8 billion CNY annually. The severest losses occurred in 1996. Although an obvious abruption occurred in 1992, a 2-3-year periodicity was detected in ITC-related losses. Temporally, most affected provinces showed a slight increase in ITC-related losses. Spatially, ITC-related losses were greatest in Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces.
