Spatial domain multiplexing (SDM) offers a degree of photon freedom to optical fibers. One variant of SDM utilizes ring-like output profiles, created through specific oblique input angles, and shows high-performance gains. Conventional modeling of this system utilizes Laguerre-Gaussian based models; however, these models are more suitable for free-space environments as opposed to fiber propagation. Therefore, a diffraction-based approach to deriving a Bessel-Gaussian beam solution is presented that adheres well to experimental data while maintaining continuity requirements. The derived model shows an input angle to azimuthal index relationship proportional to the transverse wave number of the carrier optical fiber region of SDM architectures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe the design and ground-based performance of the two-color calibration lamp for the Michelson Interferometer for Global High-Resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument on the NASA Ionospheric Connection (ICON) satellite. The calibration lamp assembly contains radio frequency excited krypton and neon lamps, which generate emission lines at 557 and 630 nm, respectively, and which are used to monitor thermal drifts in the two MIGHTI Doppler asymmetric spatial heterodyne interferometers. The lamps are coupled to two mixed optical fiber bundles that deliver the calibration signals to the two MIGHTI optical units. The assembly starts reliably, consumes <8 W, and has passed environmental testing for the ICON satellite. The total mass of the lamp assembly is 1.8 kg. Beam confinement or “no free-space optics” via fiber transmission can achieve improved reliability, lower cost, and reduced component count for active sensing systems. For midinfrared delivery, mechanically robust chalcogenide (arsenic sulfide) single-mode fibers are of interest. A 12-μm core diameter fiber is shown to transport >10 W at 2053 nm, and a 25-μm core diameter fiber enables single-mode beam transport from a 4550-nm quantum cascade laser. As midinfrared sources continue to increase their output power capabilities, chalcogenide fibers will eventually be limited in their power-handling capacity due to optical nonlinearities or thermal failure. These limitations are discussed and analyzed in the context of single-mode chalcogenide fibers in order to provide a framework for power transmission limitations in various operating regimes. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a widely used technique for measuring blood oxygen saturation, commonly using an external pulse oximeter applied to a finger, toe, or earlobe. Previous research has demonstrated the utility of direct monitoring of the oxygen saturation of internal organs, using optical fibers to transmit light between the photodiode/light emitting diode and internal site. However, little research into the optimization and standardization of such a probe has yet been carried out. This research establishes the relationship between fiber separation distance and PPG signal, and between fiber core width and PPG signal. An ideal setup is suggested: 1000-μm fibers at a separation distance of 3 to 3.5 mm, which was found to produce signals around 0.35 V in amplitude with a low variation coefficient. The mode characteristics of few-mode step-index optical fibers composed of a center core and a few assistant cores are investigated. Each fourfold mode in the optical fiber can be split into two twofold modes, avoiding strong mode coupling during the transmission process. In addition, two-mode operation in the fiber with a wide wavelength range of 1.42 to 1.9 μm is demonstrated numerically. Polymer optical fibers (POF) offer only transmission sofar with one wavelength at 650 nm. In order to increase the overall transfer rate, the key element for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) over POF will be presented. This element is a demultiplexer (DEMUX), which was designed in polymethylmethacrylate with an optical grating on an aspherical mirror to be produced by injection molding in a further development steps. The master was produced by diamond turning as a master for injection molding replication. The results of the different simulations followed by the development steps and the measurements of the prototype are presented. This prototype is used as a DEMUX in a WDM system with four wavelengths. In the WDM system, bit-error ratio (BER) measurements with an 8.26 Gb/s cumulated data rate in an offline processed discrete multitone modulation technique have been achieved over 100 m SI-POF at a BER of 10-3. The problem of light collection in random lasers (RLs) is addressed. As the radiation emitted by this system is Lambertian due to its spatial incoherence, a device based on an ellipsoidal revolution mirror is designed, developed, and tested in order to optimize the harvesting of the radiation emitted by the RL. The system provides a simple injection procedure of the emitted energy at the entrance of a multimode optical fiber. A scheme for detecting the phase of an incoming optical signal is systematically optimized and demonstrated experimentally. It makes use of four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber but differs from a phase-sensitive amplifier by its focus on phase detection, rather than on phase-dependent noise reduction. This experimental setup combines the signal with its phase-conjugated idler at the same frequency, before sending the combination to a photodetector. Experimental results show that the ratio of maximum and minimum currents can exceed 1000 even at a relatively low pump power of 10 mW. The proposed scheme may be useful for detecting the signal phase in coherent communication systems without the need of heterodyne detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
