The combination of electron-deficient viologen ligands with electron-rich POMs is a typical acceptor–donor system that has recently received much attention. Under solvothermal and hydrothermal conditions, by introducing three symmetric viologen ligands into POM-based hybrid materials, we successfully constructed four POMs–viologen inorganic–organic hybrid compounds, namely (1,3-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26) (1) (1,3-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1′-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridine dichloride), {CoII(1,4-bcbpy)2(H2O)2[H2(β-Mo8O26)]}·2H2O·2CH2O (2), (1,4-bcbpy)2·(δ-Mo8O26)·2H2O (3) (1,4-bcbpy·2Cl = 1,1′-bis(4-carboxybenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridine dichloride, CH2O = formaldehyde), and {CuII(1,1-pmbby)2(H2O)[H2(β-Mo8O26)2]}·5H2O·C2H7N (4) (1,1-pmbby·2Cl = 1,1′-[1,4-phenylbis(methylene)]bis-(4,4′-bipyridine)dichloride, C2H7N = dimethylamine). These four compounds exhibit different fascinating structures, especially compound 4 is a typical metal–organic framework. Compounds 1–4 exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli. For example, compounds 1–4 showed a positive response to the irradiation from a 300 W Xe lamp. When a positive voltage was applied to the ECD based on compounds 1–4, 1/2/3/4-ECD underwent a significant color conversion. What's more, compound 4 also showed obvious discoloration results after heating. In a word, 1–4 are multifunctional discoloration materials under different external stimuli. In addition, the coated filter paper prepared based on compound 3 can be used as a new printing material medium and can be successfully applied in erasable inkless printing and dual anti-counterfeiting. This paper investigates the synthesis, crystal structure, thermal properties, and energetic performance of two 1D coordination polymers (CPs). The CPs, namely, [Zn(atrz)(DNBA)2(H2O)2]n (1) and [Cd(atrz)(DNBA)2(H2O)2]n (2), were designed and synthesized based on the nitrogen-rich ligand 4,4′-azobis-1,2,4-triazole (atrz) and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (HDNBA) via a mixed ligand strategy using a simple and environment-friendly method. The CPs were characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). SCXRD analysis reveals a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal ions (Zn/Cd), leading to the formation of a 1D coordination polymer while constructing a 2D structural framework through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Both the CPs exhibit similar thermal stability but considerably differ in their heat of formation values (1 = −894.43, 2 = 1635.93 kJ mol−1). CP 2 has higher detonation velocity (7.24 km s−1) and pressure (23.67 GPa) compared to 1 (detonation velocity: 6.28 km s−1, detonation pressure: 17.57 GPa) owing to its higher heat of formation and density. Both the CPs exhibit ideal insensitivity to friction and impact stimuli, ensuring their safety during transportation and processing. The value of average activation energy obtained from isoconversion ASTM E698 for 1 and 2 was reported to be 143.8 and 168.0 kJ mol−1, respectively. This study explores the development of energetic CPs through the mixed ligand strategy based on the atrz ligand and incorporating HDNBA as the co-ligand to reduce the sensitivity while maintaining the comparable energetic performance of previously reported atrz-based complexes. In this paper, we report a two-dimensional (2D) Hofmann-type spin-crossover coordination polymer [FeII(o-NTrz)2PtII(CN)4]·H2O (o-NTrz = 4-(o-nitrobenzyl)imino-1,2,4-triazole). Due to the remarkable configurational flexibility of triazole-based ligand, the porous structure of this compound can be reversibly regulated by the loss of guest water molecules as a consequence of rotation of o-NTrz. The 180° reorientation of the o-nitrobenzyl moiety not only induces a response of gate-closing/opening of the porous framework but also significantly modulates the spin transition temperature. Polar cyano fragments and their isomeric isocyano counterparts have attracted great attention as stimuli-responsive luminescent materials in a wide range of fields including organic light-emitting diode devices, chemical fluorescent sensors, photoelectric semiconductors, anti-counterfeit products, etc., mainly because of their typical electron-deficient activity, noncovalent recognition ability, and variable coordination capacity. The electron-deficient and polar nature of these blocks have significant effects on the properties of the cyano/isocyano-based luminophore materials, especially concerning their condensed state-dependent electronic structures. Among them, donor–acceptor (D–A) derived unimolecular and co-assembled luminophores have attracted more attention because their large delocalized structures and noncovalent interaction recognition sites can rebuild the electronic transfer character in the aggregative state, thus endowing them with outstanding stimuli-responsive luminescent behavior via intermolecular and intramolecular charge transfer in polytropic morphologies. In this perspective paper, we give a brief introduction on stimuli-responsive organic and coordinated luminophores and the documented typical design concepts and applications in recent years. It is expected that this perspective article will not only summarize the recent developments of polar cyano/isocyano-derived luminophores and their coordination compounds via structural tailoring and self-assembly but also throw light on the future of the design of more sophisticated stimuli-responsive architectures and their versatile properties. Urease may rapidly hydrolyze urea, causing a significant amount of ammonia to be released and decreasing the efficacy of urea fertilizers. However, urease inhibitors (UIs) can prevent the interaction between urease and urea, allowing crops to absorb ammonium nitrogen for an extended period of time. In this paper, by using different O-donor second auxiliary ligands, we have designed and synthesized two Cu-based coordination polymers (Cu-CPs) to operate as UIs by combining two aromatic carboxylic acids and a bis-pyridine-bis-amide ligand, which show excellent urease inhibitory activity. Cu-CP-1 has an obvious inhibitory effect on the inhibitory activity against jack bean urease, with the IC50 of 1 being 0.83 ± 0.01 μM while the IC50 value for Cu-CP-2 was 2.53 ± 0.01 μM, respectively. Furthermore, inhibitory activity against urease, kinetics, molecular docking, and comparisons of the title Cu-CPs and other complex-based materials have been comprehensively investigated. More importantly, the bridging atoms of μ2-OH and μ2-Cl play important roles in urease inhibition activity. In this paper, two types of solid phase 2D and 3D XBOFs were selectively constructed from identical building blocks of tetraphenylmethane tetrapyridine derivative and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene by changing the crystallization solvent. In this paper, a series of coordination polymers, {[Zn(adb)(L1)2]·solvent}n (L1 = solvent = N,N-dimethylacetamide, Hui-3-DMA; L1 = N,N-dimethylformamide and no solvent, Hui-3-DMF; L1 = N,N-diethylformamide and no solvent, Hui-3-DEF) have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of Zn(NO3)3·6H2O and 4,4′-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2adb). These compounds show similar one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chain structures, which are limited by the end-coordination of the solvent molecules. Interestingly, these compounds all show blue-emission properties, which could be easily modulated by using different solvents. Among them, Hui-3-DMA presents an excellent quantum yield performance, as high as to 54.1%, which is very promising for blue-emission materials. Moreover, various-temperature fluorescence studies reveal good linear or exponential decline trends for their emission intensity as temperature increases, demonstrating the potential of these compounds as fluorescent thermometers. Optically-active luminescent materials based on lanthanoid ions attract significant attention due to their unique spectroscopic properties and the possibility of application as chemical sensors. Five isostructural lanthanoid metal organic frameworks, namely {[Pr(3,4-PDA)(Glu)0.5(H2O)2]CH3CN}(1) and [Ln(3,4-PDA)(Glu)0.5(H2O)2]: Ln = Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4), and Tb (5) (where 3,4-PDA = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid, Glu = glutaric acid), synthesized via the solvothermal method are reported. These lanthanoid metal–organic frameworks were characterized by FTIR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, BET, Hirshfeld surface analysis, DFT calculations, electronic spectroscopy, and photoluminescence techniques. MOFs 1–5 show porous two-dimensional (2D) structures. The luminescence properties of MOFs 4 and 5 demonstrated the range of sensing capabilities for some toxic heavy metals. However, MOFs 4 and 5 are highly sensitive for the detection of Pb2+, exhibiting the most effective luminescence quenching with the lowest detectable change in the signal occurring at ∼0.014 and ∼0.013 ppm of Pb2+ with MOFs 4 and 5, respectively, at room temperature in minutes. The MOF-based luminescence sensors designed in this paper demonstrate a successful and feasible strategy to use pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid-based ligand as an antenna, which can efficiently sensitize Eu3+ and Tb3+ emission. Developing high-accuracy luminescent sensors for detecting emerging environmental pollutants is of great importance and is still a challenge. Utilizing a 4-carboxyphenylphosphonic acid (H3pbc) ligand, a novel one-dimensional (1D) Zn-based coordination polymer with the formula [Zn2(Hpbc)2(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)]·H2O (Zn–CP, H3pbc = 4-HOOCC6H4PO3H2, 2,2′-bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) has been hydrothermally synthesized. Each of the 1D chains was linked via π–π stacking interactions and formed a supramolecular framework. Furthermore, due to the existence of uncoordinated –COOH groups, the terbium-functionalized hybrid (Tb3+@Zn-CP) was prepared by introducing Tb3+ ions into the structure through coordinated postsynthetic modification (PSM). Tb3+@Zn-CP shows the characteristic emission of Tb3+ ions due to the "antenna effect" of the H3pbc ligand. Based on the excellent luminescence properties and structural stabilities of Zn-CP and Tb3+@Zn-CP, they can be used as highly sensitive and selective luminescent probes of the UV filter BP (benzophenone) depending on multiquenching effects. In addition, their obvious color change can be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light, which was successfully used in the preparation of portable BP test paper. More importantly, Tb3+@Zn-CP is the first example of CPs as a ratiometric luminescent sensor for BP. A novel water-stable CdII-based metal–organic framework, namely {[Cd(BIBT)(TDC)]·2H2O}n (JXUST-28, BIBT = 4,7-bi(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzo-[2,1,3]thiadiazole and H2TDC = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid), was synthesized using a mixed-ligand strategy. Structural analysis demonstrates that JXUST-28 exhibits a two-dimensional layer structure with 4-connected sql topology. Intriguingly, JXUST-28 presents good stability in boiling water (at least 5 days), common organic solvents and aqueous solutions with different pH values of 2–12 (more than 24 hours). Furthermore, fluorescence experiments revealed that JXUST-28 could sense Hg2+ ions in aqueous solution via a quenching effect with a detection limit of 0.097 μM. Meanwhile, JXUST-28 can also be regenerated at least 5 times to detect Hg2+ ions. In the current paper, we have successfully synthesized three new mercury coordination polymers with fascinating structures and properties via a flexible sulfur donor ligand, namely, {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [BF4] n (1), {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [ClO4] n (2), and [Hg(SCN)2(μ2-Ls)] n (3) [Ls = 1,1-bis(3-methyl-4-imidazoline-2-thione)methane]. These complexes have been characterized by means of different techniques such as single crystal X-ray crystallography, FT-IR, elemental analysis (CHNS), UV-Vis, PXRD, BET, and TGA. Suitable single crystals of all complexes were obtained using the branch tube method with a very high yield and good stability due to the high affinity of mercury to bind to the thione groups. The cationic moieties of polymers 1 and 2 were isostructural, with a HgCl2S2 coordination core structure. The voids of the quasi-hexagonal packing of the columnar chains were occupied by unbonded tetrahedral BF4− ions in 1 and perchlorate anions in polymer 2. Polymer 3 has a less distorted tetrahedral geometry than 1 and 2, with a HgS4 core structure. By considering the thiophilicity of mercury, a thioamide-based Ls ligand was used to detoxify Hg(II) into insoluble polymers 1–3. The results of an MTT assay for (HepG2) liver cells confirmed the excellent cytoprotective effect of this ligand against mercury. Based on IC50 calculations, their toxicity was in order of polymer 1 > polymer 2 > polymer 3. These polymers were also considered as adsorbents for the reversible removal of iodine from solution and the kinetics of the process has been studied in detail. Interestingly, all of them showed an excellent stability and high capacity, in order of 763.53 mg g−1, 877.10 mg g−1, and 905.31 mg g−1 for polymers 1–3, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2011, Zhang's research team, in cooperation with Li and Liu, reported the Pt1/FeOx atomically dispersed catalysts for the first time in the world, and based on this, proposed the concept of "single-atom catalysts". Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have a wide range of industrial application prospects in the catalytic synthesis of fine chemicals due to their high atomic utilization rate and special catalytic activity. With the deepening of the research, the preparation methods of SACs emerge in an endless stream, but it is still an urgent problem to realize the industrial production of highly stable SACs prepared in small batches (gram level) or even in large batches (kilogram level). In this review paper, several typical solvent-free green synthetic strategies (e.g., ball milling, physical mixing, gas migration, and pyrolyzing coordination polymers (including MOFs)) for the batch preparation of SACs are introduced. And typical catalytic application of SACs in green synthesis of fine chemicals by means of oxidation reaction, hydrogenation reaction, coupling reaction and other reactions are also introduced. In this paper, we showed an example of acid-directed hydrothermal synthesis of three Cd-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) under similar conditions, namely, [Cd(TIDB)(AA)0.5(NO3)]n (1), [Cd3(TIDB)2(AA)2(H2O)2(HCOO)2]n (2), and {[Cd4(TIDB)(AA)4(H2O)5](C2H5OH)2(H2O)2}n (3) (TIDB = 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene, H2AA = anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylic acid). Compound 1 was synthesized by the introduction of HNO3 as a structure-directing agent. It has 2D coordination networks with the 3,4-c bey topology. The porous 3D supramolecular framework in compound 1 is stabilized by H-bonds. Compound 2 was formed with the use of a HCOOH agent. It has a 3D coordination network with a new 3,4,5-c underlying net topology, and it is also porous. Compound 3 was obtained using a CH3COOH agent. It has a disordered non-porous 3D coordination network. Because 3 was hard to purify, 1 and 2 were chosen for further property investigation. On the one hand, fluorescence studies showed that 1 and 2 are both blue-emitting MOFs with quantum yields of 2.3% and 0.8%, respectively. On the other hand, CO2 cycloaddition performance was also tested, which revealed that 2 has a superior catalytic conversion of epoxybutane at 60 °C and 1 atm with a high yield of up to 95.6%. Automobile exhaust gases, plastic pollutants, smoking, and other harmful substances can cause serious harm to human beings and the environment. Styrene, as a common airborne toxin, enters the human body through breathing or the skin and is discharged in the form of phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA). Therefore, specific, sensitive and trace detection of PGA is particularly important. Here, two zinc-based metal–organic frameworks {[Zn2L1(DMF)2H2O](DMF)2H2O}n, {[Zn4(L2)2(DMF)2(H2O)3](DMF)8}n (L1 = 2,5-bis((3-carboxylphenyl)amino)terephthalic acid, L2 = 2,5-bis((4-carboxyphenyl)amino)terephthalic acid) have been reported as 1 and 2, respectively. Both 1 and 2 present 3D structures, which can both be simplified as 4,4,4-c net topology. It is worth mentioning that 2 has two different kinds of Zn SBUs as connecting nodes in the structure. Besides, compared with the other materials for the detection of PGA, 1 and 2 exhibit relatively low detection limits (LODs), both in water and in urine (where the LODs for 1 in water and urine were 0.33 μM and 0.43 μM in the range of 0–0.39 mM, and those for 2 were 0.28 μM and 0.49 μM in the range of 0–0.59 mM, respectively). In addition, the sensors have excellent anti-interference ability, high stability, rapid response, and can easily distinguish between different concentrations of PGA with the naked eye. In this paper, three new cobalt-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with different topologies, namely, {[Co(HL)(tib)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (1), [Co3(L)2(bibp)4(H2O)2]n (2) and [Co2(L)(bip)(μ3-OH)]n (3) (H3L = 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)-6-carboxylpyridine, tib = 1,3,5-tirs(1-imidazolyl)benzene, bibp = 4,4′-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl, bip = 3,5-bis(imidazoly-1-yl)toluene) synthesized by a hydrothermal method, were investigated. Different auxiliary ligands led to the diversity of the three MOFs in terms of structure and properties. Hereafter, the adsorption properties of the MOFs on different dyes were investigated; of interest is that the adsorption performance of MOF 3 on Congo red dye is particularly outstanding, including excellent performance in terms of removal rates, selectivity and recyclability. Its adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were also investigated. Finally, its possible adsorption mechanism was analyzed by zeta potential measurements, infrared spectroscopy and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. It was hypothesized that the exquisite confined microenvironments consisting of electrostatic interactions, a suitable pore volume, and complicated van der Waals forces of hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking played a critical role during the adsorption process. In this paper, a novel Schiff base ligand NaHL (NaHL = sodium (S,E)-2-((4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) propanoate) was designed and synthesized, and three novel complexes with Zn(II) were obtained by a solvent evaporation technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that [Zn(L)(H2O)]n1 and [Zn(L)(H2O)]n2 were one-dimensional coordination polymers (CPs) with a helix structure, while [Zn2(L)2(bipy)] 3 was a two-dimensional CP with the participation of an auxiliary ligand. Fluorescence spectra exhibited that 1 and 2 had good fluorescence properties in both solution and solid states, but 3 was basically quenched due to the addition of ancillary ligands in the solid state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to further reveal the intrinsic fluorescence properties and mechanisms of 1 and 2, which demonstrated the chelate fluorescence enhancement effect (CHEF). A zirconium-MOF with a sulphonic acid functionalized biphenyldicarboxylic acid linker was synthesized by a solvothermal process. The material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and FESEM analysis. The fluorescence sensing experiment towards the detection of Cu2+ was carried out. The detection time for Cu2+ was only 15 s with a very low limit of detection, which is 0.22 μM. The Stern–Volmer constant was found to be 5.5 × 105 M−1. For easy handling and real field application purposes, we developed a paper-strip based sensing device. The systematic study of the mechanism by EDX, PXRD, TRPL, and UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed that the quenching of fluorescence intensity by copper(II) was due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer. This paper describes the structure-based design and synthesis of two novel square-planar trans-N2O2 Cu(II) complexes [Cu(L1)2] (1) and [Cu(L2)2] (2) of 2-((Z)-(4-methoxyphenylimino)methyl)-4,6-dichlorophenol (L1H) and 2-((Z)-(2,4-dibromophenylimino)methyl)-4-bromophenol (L2H) as potential inhibitors against the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 and HIV viruses. Copper complexes (1) and (2) crystallize in a monoclinic crystal system with P21/n and P21/c space groups, respectively [a = 12.4630(12) Å, b = 9.2765(10) Å, c = 12.6425(13) Å, α = 90°, β = 111.863°, γ = 90° and Z = 2 for [Cu(L1)2] (1); a = 10.1185(13) Å, b = 10.9809(12) Å, c = 12.5803(13) Å, α = 90°, β = 103.795°, γ = 90°, and Z = 2 for [Cu(L2)2] (2)]. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that both complexes exhibit square-planar geometry (τ = 0). Quantum computational calculations were used for the structure–property relationship. Detailed structural and non-covalent supramolecular interactions in the complexes were investigated by single crystal structure analysis and computational approaches. Hirshfeld surface and 2D fingerprint plots were explored in the crystal structure of the complexes. The strength of the interaction and 3D topology of the crystal packing are visualized through an energy framework. Further, inspired by recent developments to find a structure-based drug design for inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease, molecular docking of the copper complexes with the SARS-CoV-2 main protease for COVID-19 was performed. The X-ray crystallographic structures of the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (PDB ID: 6XBG) and HIV virus (PDB ID: 1JLE and 1UUD) were retrieved from the protein data bank and used as receptor proteins. The molecular docking calculations of complexes (1) and (2) with SARS-CoV-2 virus revealed binding affinities of −9.8 kcal mol−1 and −9.4 kcal mol−1 with inhibition constants of 2.912 μM and 2.813 μM, respectively, at the inhibition binding site of the receptor protein. Besides this, molecular docking against HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (PDB ID: 1JLE) and HIV-1 TAR RNA (PDB ID: 1UUD) were also studied. The molecular docking results also showed that copper complexes with HIV-1 and HIV-1 RNA exhibited good binding affinities and inhibition constants at the binding site of the receptor protein. It was observed that the binding affinities of the copper complexes towards SARS-CoV-2 were comparatively higher than towards the HIV virus. Overall, an in silico molecular docking study suggests the potential role of copper complexes as antivirus drug candidates targeting the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro and HIV protease inhibitors. Hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can significantly impact human health and the environment. Hence, the detection of VOCs is of foremost importance. A quinoxaline-based fluorimetric probe (1) unveils a notable "turn-on" fluorescence response towards mesitylene in the presence of other VOCs and common interfering ions in aqueous media. The sensing phenomenon involves specific 1 : 1 stoichiometric binding of the probe with mesitylene with a ∼2.66 ppm detection limit. Furthermore, the probe experiences morphological transformations from a fibril-network to a stone-shaped hetero-structure upon treatment with mesitylene, indicating mesitylene induced self-assembly. The detection induced self-assembly of the probe was further corroborated by dynamic-light-scattering (DLS) and fluorescence microscopy study. A systematic investigation of the system manganese(II) salt–H2SBA–auxiliary ligand–solvent successfully led to the isolation of six new multidimensional coordination polymers: [Mn5(2-pic)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (1), [Mn3(pyzc)2(DMF)(H2O)(SBA)2]·DMF·H2O (2), [Mn5(pyzc)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (3), [Mn5(mpyzc)2(DMA)4(SBA)4]·4DMA (4), [Mn2(phen)2(H2O)(SBA)2]·2DMA (5) and [Mn3(phen)2(SBA)3]·5DMF (6), where SBA = 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoate 2-pic = 2-picolinate, pyzc = 2-pyrazinecarboxylate acid, mpyzc = 5-methyl-2-pyrazinecarboxylate and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline. The selected use of N-containing ligands to block the coordination sites of manganese enabled us to understand their influence in controlling the nuclearity and the dimensionality of the extended manganese carboxylate coordination networks. Single crystal X-ray crystallography established that the structures of all the solids were built of homometallic clusters varying from monomeric to pentameric manganese(II) carboxylate units. While the solids 1, 3 and 4 are isostructural, possessing a 2D coordination network containing pentanuclear SBUs of the composition {Mn5N2O3}, the 2D solids 2 and 5 are respectively built from binuclear {Mn2N4O7} and trinuclear {Mn3N2O14} SBUs. The solid 6 is the lone example of a 3D coordination network in this system. Dielectric measurements showed comparable dielectric behavior for the isostructural solids 1, 3 and 4 with ε′ ∼ 17 at room temperature. Relatively lower values observed for 2 and 5 (ε′ ∼ 14) were due to a combined effect of strong manganese carboxylate interaction and the presence of ordered polar guest molecules. Significantly higher values for 6 (∼21) could be attributed to disordered guest molecules. All the six solids exhibited antiferromagnetic behavior at lower temperatures. This paper also discusses the growth of the solids in terms of supramolecular aggregation of manganese carboxylate complex species with or without an auxiliary ligand, proposing a mechanistic pathway to trace the chemical events from molecules to the final solid. This paper presents a simple method to prepare carbon-coated spinel nickel–cobalt–sulfide metal hollow spheres with excellent electrochemical properties, which can be considered as promising materials for supercapacitors. A type of Ni–Co coordination polymer sphere is identified as a precursor metal template as well; the prepared coordination polymer precursor sphere is vulcanized to obtain the NiCo2S4 hollow metal sphere. After that, glucose modified on the surface of the hollow metal sphere is the source of carbon. After hydrothermal sulfuration treatment the carbon-coated NiCo2S4 hybrid material is obtained, which is sintered in a tube furnace to improve the crystallinity of the materials. Hofmann-like cyanometallic complexes represent one of the biggest and well-known classes of FeII spin-crossover compounds. In this paper, we report on the first FeII Hofmann clathrate analogues with unsubstituted 1,2,3-triazole, which exhibit temperature induced spin transition. Two new coordination polymers with the general formula [FeII(1,2,3-triazole)2MII(CN)4] (M = Pt, Pd) undergo abrupt hysteretic spin crossover in the range of 190–225 K as revealed by magnetic susceptibility measurements. Two compounds are isostructural and are built of infinite cyanometallic layers which are supported by 1,2,3-triazole ligands. The thermal hysteresis loop is very stable at different scan rates from 0.5 to 10 K min−1. The compounds display strong thermochromic effect, changing their colour from pink in the low-spin state to white in the high-spin state. Our findings show that 1,2,3-triazole is suitable for elaboration of spin-crossover Hofmann clathrate analogues, and its use instead of more classical azines can advantageously expand this family of complexes. Coordination polymers (CPs) in recent times have emerged as active constituents in many semiconductor devices like light emitting diodes (LED), field effect transistors (FET), photovoltaic devices and Schottky barrier diodes. An intelligent choice of linkers, careful selection of metal ions and post synthetic modification (PSM) can provide a better pathway for charge transportation. However, a proper understanding of the charge transport mechanism in CPs is still inadequate due to the lack of considerable experimental and theoretical work. In this paper, we address the theoretical elucidation of semiconducting properties and a probable pathway for charge transportation in three of our previously published CPs using density functional theory (DFT). These results help us to recognize the orbitals that have major contributions in the formation of the valence band and also provide the most likely pathway for optimum electronic communication. Gold thiolate coordination polymers (CPs) are anisotropic materials with 1D or 2D networks exhibiting a large palette of photoluminescence properties. In this paper, we show that, from both lamellar acid and ester, [Au(p-SPhCO2X)]n CPs (X = H, Me), it is possible to perform post-synthesis esterification or saponification reactions. Three new 2D phases with X = Na, K and Cs were isolated. In addition, ligand exchange reactions were carried out from 1D [Au(p-SPh)]n CP and 2D [Au(p-SPhCO2X)]n CPs (X = H, Me) and the transformations from 1D to 2D structures and vice versa point out a mechanism of dissolution and recrystallization that is governed by the nature of the ligands and the presence of weak interactions. It is highly desirable for porous coordination polymers (PCPs), including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), to retain their intrinsic characteristics in electrocatalysis, instead of being used as precursors or templates for further total conversion to other compounds via high-temperature calcination. Here, a S-treated two-dimensional (2D) CoFe bimetallic PBA grown on carbon fiber paper (CFP) (named S-CoFe-PBA/CFP) is assembled and applied as a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst in 1 M KOH. The resultant S-CoFe-PBA/CFP demonstrates significantly improved OER catalytic activity; overpotentials of only 235, 259, and 272 mV are needed to drive current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, with a super low Tafel slope of 35.2 mV dec−1. Even more noteworthy, a current density of 90 mA cm−2 can be achieved when a potential of 1.5 V vs. RHE is applied, which is 6.4 times higher than that of commercial Ir/C in the same environment. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance can be ascribed to two reasons caused by the S-treatment process. On one hand, H+ from intermediates of *OH and *OOH can be captured by –SOx distributed on the surface of the catalyst, thus accelerating the breaking of O–H; on the other hand, partial phase transformation of CoFe-PBA leads to the in situ formation of amorphous CoSx nanogauze on the surface, and the resultant electronic interactions between the two phases contribute much to the improvement of charge transfer and adsorption for OER intermediates. This paper demonstrates the utility of joint applications of X-ray diffraction, solid state (ss) NMR, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular mechanics (MM) calculations for the determination of the stereochemistry of paramagnetic bis(aminoacidato)copper(II) compounds. Solution-based and mechanochemical syntheses of trans-bis(leucinato)copper(II) [Cu(Leu)2] with L - and DL -leucine using different solvents always resulted in the same two-dimensional coordination polymers of the LL (previously reported in the literature) and DL diastereomers. The X-ray crystal and molecular structure of trans-catena-[(μ- D -leucinato)(μ- L -leucinato)copper(II)] (space group C2) has symmetry unrelated D - and L -leucine side-chain conformations. An asymmetrical copper(II) DL -amino acid complex has not been observed so far in a non-centrosymmetric space group. Both LL and DL trans-[Cu(Leu)2] crystals have similar intermolecular bonding. The X-ray powder diffraction and magic-angle spinning (MAS) ssNMR information available from the polycrystalline bulk phase of the two compounds agree with their single-crystal results. Besides, the 2H MAS ssNMR spectrum of the polycrystalline sample synthesized using DL -leucine showed weak signals which were ascribed to a small amount of the LL (DD) stereoisomers. DFT calculations of the Fermi-contact contributions aided the 13C and 2H NMR spectral assignments. DFT conformational analyses of the LL and DL isomers revealed two Leu side-chain conformations as the energetically favorable ones in the gas phase and aqueous solution. These are exactly the conformations whose combinations occur in the observed crystal structures. Similar MM potential energies of LL and DL trans-[Cu(Leu)2] in the crystal lattices suggest that crystallization of DL over LL (DD) diastereomers should be attributed to kinetic rather than thermodynamic effects. In this paper, three isostructural 1D lanthanide complexes, [Ln(dppc)(H2O)4]n·2nH2O (Ln = Eu, Tb and Eu0.501Tb0.499, named 1-Eu, 2-Tb and Eu0.501Tb0.499), based on 3-(2,4-dicarboxylate phenyl)-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid (H3dppc) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, PXRD, TG and X-ray crystallography. The complexes exhibit a 1D chain structure, which is further linked into a 3D supramolecular framework by hydrogen bonds. Tuneable emission colour of Eu0.501Tb0.499 is realized by adjusting the excitation wavelength. The sensing properties of 1-Eu and 2-Tb towards Fe3+ and aniline indicate that the two complexes have almost the same superior sensitivity and low detection limit for Fe3+ in aqueous solution, while they have different detection abilities for aniline in DMF solvent. The different detection abilities were discussed by means of PXRD, UV-vis, luminescence lifetimes and molecular surface calculations (Hirshfeld surface analysis and 2D fingerprint plots). Three new Cu(I) CPs, namely, {[Cu2(DPMF)3(CN)2]}n (1), {[Cu2(DPMF)2(CN)2]·DMSO}n (2), and {[Cu(DPMF)(CN)]·DMAC·MeOH}n (3) were synthesized for the first time using an AIE ligand DPMF [DPMF = 4,4′-((9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)methylene)dipyridine]. X-ray structural analysis has revealed that 1 shows a 1D double-chain structure, 2 displays a hexagonal graphene-like 2D layer architecture with 63-hcb topology and 3 exhibits a 3D framework with 66-dia topology, in which DPMFs are arranged in a windmill-like shape. The differences in their structures are mainly due to the diverse torsions of the DPMF bridges. Furthermore, 3 possesses excellent thermal and solvent stability, and the luminescence measurements indicate that 3 can detect TNP with high sensitivity and selectivity and good recyclability. The emission quenching effect is realized by the energy transfer and electron transfer between 3 and TNP. Moreover, a luminescent test paper is designed to realize the portable detection of TNP in practical applications. These experimental results suggest that 3 can be a potential sensor for TNP. Mechanoresponsive luminescent materials coupled with other functionalities are of particular interest due to their multiple external stimuli responsive properties. In this paper, a new sensitive mechanoresponsive luminescent coordination polymer, [Cd(INI)(DMF)2·DMF] (1) (H2INI = N-(5-isophthalic acid)-1,8-naphthalimide), has been successfully designed and synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits interesting mechanoresponsive and grinding-enhanced luminescence properties, and its luminescence colour changed from weak blue-green to bright blue upon grinding owing to the external pressure-induced destruction of π⋯π stacked arrangements in local defective areas. Moreover, the luminescence properties and uncoordinated carbonyl groups of well-ground g-1 endow it with excellent sensing ability for Cr3+ ions. This work will provide a new perspective to rationally design multifunctional coordination polymers that can serve as practical multi-responsive sensors to pressure and chemicals. Improving proton conductivity is of great importance for the further application of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) or metal–organic coordination polymers (MOCPs) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this paper, we proposed a new approach to increase proton conductivities in MOCPs coming from organic ligands, e.g. coordination inducement and MOCP–cocrystal composite formation strategies, which is based on the potential function of organic ligands. By employing the approach, we have successfully synthesized and characterized three crystalline compounds, PPA (1), [Cu(PPA)I] (2) and [Co(PPA)2(BDC)(H2O)2·(PPA)2(H2BDC)2(H2O)] (3) (PPA = 4-(3-pyridinyl)-2-amino pyrimidine, H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid). These compounds show high water stabilities and different proton conducting behaviours, especially compound 3 with a proton conductivity of 2.29 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 325 K and ∼97% RH, which is higher than or comparable to those of some reported compounds. More importantly, a persistent increase in proton conductivity is observed from 1 to 3, which is about one order of magnitude. Furthermore, single crystal analyses show that coordination and hydrogen-bonding interactions play a crucial role in improving proton-conductive properties for these compounds. In this paper we describe unprecedented Ir(III) complexes of 5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazine and their reactivity towards the strained cyclooctyne BCN. The coordination of a 1,2,4-triazine ring to an iridium(III) ion drastically increases the speed of the reaction, showing the second order rate constant of 8 M−1 s−1, the record value to date for a triazine-BCN reaction. A novel Cd(II)-ZMOF with a unique sodalite topology has been successfully designed and synthesized using a flexible polytopic compartmental ligand. The microporous complex contains 1D hexagonal channels with large void space for the accommodation of guest molecules. This work demonstrates a new paradigm for designing and functionalizing zeolite-type frameworks. The triconnected linker forms coordination polymer gels in the presence of Cd2+ and the gelation was controlled by the presence of specific anions. They possess good thermal stability and exhibit thixotropic behavior. Optical properties revealed that the complex is exclusively thermochromic and undergoes a reversible transition at 80 °C, changing its color from yellow to orange red. Owing to the large voids in the framework, the complex can serve as a host for use in dye adsorption. Thus this paper offers a new MOF material with exceptional chromic behavior, gelation properties and adsorption capability for the development of high performance multifunctional materials. The search for earth-abundant metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that operates under neutral conditions is a challenge in the field of sustainable energy. Many strategies have been used, and coordination polymers with structures similar to Prussian blue appear to be interesting electrocatalysts due to their efficiency, stability and tunable properties. In this paper, a novel catalyst produced from a cobalt-pentacyanidoferrate precursor is presented and applied in studies of the OER. This material showed a high surface active area and electrocatalytic activity comparable to traditional cobalt hexacyanidoferrate. According to the theoretical calculations, the improvement of these properties is an effect of the framework arrangement and it is not caused by changes of the electronic structure. Further experimental evidence is necessary to determine the active species. However, our results of spin densities obtained from DFT calculations suggest that the active species for water oxidation is the radical Fe(iii)–CN–Co(iii)–OṖ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Materials with magnetic interactions between their metal centres play a tremendous role in modern technologies and can exhibit unique physical phenomena. In recent years, magnetic metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers have attracted significant attention because their unique structural flexibility enables them to exhibit multifunctional magnetic properties or unique magnetic states not found in the conventional magnetic materials, such as metal oxides. Techniques that enable the magnetic interactions in these materials to be probed at the atomic scale, long established to be key for developing other magnetic materials, are not well established for studying metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers. This review focuses on studies where metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers have been examined using such microscopic probes, with a particular focus on neutron scattering and density-functional theory, the most-well established experimental and computational techniques for understanding magnetic materials in detail. This paper builds on a brief introduction to these techniques to describe how such probes have been applied to a variety of magnetic materials starting with select historical examples before discussing multifunctional, low dimensional and frustrated magnets. This review highlights the information that can be obtained from such microscopic studies, including the strengths and limitations of these techniques. The present paper reports the structures and the third order nonlinear optical properties of four coordination polymers prepared by hydrothermal methods using nickel acetate or cobalt acetate, bisimidazolyl ligands and different aromatic carboxylic acids, namely [Co(H2O)2(1,2-BIB)2](Co(DBS)(1,2-BIB)]2·7H2O (1), [Ni(H2O)2(1,2-BIB)](CBA)·H2O (2), [Ni(1,2-BIB)(SDA)]·4H2O (3) and [Ni(H2O)(1,2-BIB)(HBTA)]·2H2O (4) (1,2-BIB = 1,2-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, H2DBS = sodium 3,5-dicarboxybenzenesulfonate, H2CBA = 2-(carboxymethyl)benzoic acid, H2SDA = 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic acid and H3BTA = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). Compound 1 has a one-dimensional structure, containing a polymeric cationic chain and a polymeric anionic chain. In compound 2, the Ni(II) ions are alternately linked by 1,2-BIB ligands and CBA ligands to form a joint-like chain structure. In compound 3, the metal ions are connected by 1,2-BIB to form a ladder-like structure, and SDA ligands are located on both sides of the chain. In compound 4, the Ni(II) ions are alternately connected by 1,2-BIB and BTA ligands to form a two-dimensional structure. We investigated the third-order nonlinearity of the compounds by a single-beam Z-scan technique. Interestingly, the compounds exhibit different third-order nonlinearities. Compound 1 has a saturable absorption (SA) and a self-defocusing effect with the nonlinear absorption coefficient β being -12.4 × 10-7 m W-1 and the nonlinear refractive index γ being -8.51 × 10-14 m² W-1. Compound 2 presents only a selfdefocusing effect with the nonlinear refractive index γ being -128.87 × 10-14 m² W-1, while compounds 3 and 4 show a reverse-saturation absorption (RSA) effect with the nonlinear absorption coefficient β being 4.42 × 10-7 and 2.97 × 10-7 m W-1, respectively. We calculated the band structure and the total (TDOS) and partial density of states (PDOS) of the four compounds. The calculated results are satisfactory for explaining the experimental results. A potent luminescent sensor for the detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and Fe3+ ion was developed based on a terbium(iii)-based coordination polymer, [Tb(H2O)5(BTEC)][H(C5H6N2)]·3H2O (1), which was prepared under hydrothermal condition using a benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylate (BTEC) bridging ligand. 1 possesses one-dimensional zig-zag chains decorated with carboxylate functional sites and protonated 4-aminopyridine guests located in interlayer channels. The strong green emission of 1 could be efficiently quenched by trace amounts of 4-NP through a luminescence quenching mechanism even in the presence of other aromatic compounds such as 1,2-dimethylbenzene, bromobenzene, phenol, 4-bromophenol, 4-nitrotoluene, 1,2-dinitrobenzene, nitrobenzene, 2,6-dinitrotoluene, and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. Furthermore, 1 exhibits superior luminescence quenching behavior towards Fe3+ ion over other competing interfering metallic ions such as Cr3+, Cu2+, Na+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Pd2+, and Zn2+. The possible luminescence quenching mechanisms were also discussed. Ortho-vanillin became very popular in coordination chemistry because of its Schiff bases, which generate a rich variety of complexes, ranging from oligonuclear species to coordination polymers. Some of these organic molecules are particularly useful in metallosupramolecular chemistry for assembling homo- and heterometallic helicates. The Schiff bases obtained using aminoalcohols open the door to the synthesis of homo- and heterometallic clusters with various nuclearities and surprising topologies of the metal centers. Several relevant structural types are reviewed. The heterobinuclear 3d–3d′ and 3d–4f complexes are valuable building-blocks for the synthesis of heterotrimetallic systems. Beyond the richness of this chemistry, the complexes obtained from o-vanillin-based Schiff ligands show interesting properties: magnetism, luminescence, chirality, catalysis, cytotoxicity, and ferroelectricity. We suggest in this paper that the combinative use of bent tritopic carboxylate, linear dipyridyl and adaptable Cu2+ ion leads to a higher probability of self-penetrated polymeric networks. This assertion is supported by four structures isolated herein, among which two are self-penetrated, highlighting the potential for controlled assembly of self-penetrating networks.
