The risk of unstable subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) in DFIG-based wind parks radially connected to transmission lines with series capacitive compensation is typically assessed with numerous electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, which is a time-consuming process. However, not all operating scenarios present risk of SSO and require such a detailed investigation. This paper proposes two charts based on impedance equivalents of wind generators obtained through frequency scans to quickly map which combinations of parameters can create unstable SSOs and which combinations are risk-free. With the information, engineers can immediately filter out scenarios with no risk of instability and conduct detailed studies on fewer scenarios that are truly critical. These charts can be obtained with simple equations that use only information readily available in practice to engineers, without the need to run any computer simulation. The charts also reveal the key operating conditions that can increase the risk of an unstable SSO and provide real-time quantitative insights into how close a wind park is to an instability. The challenges power systems engineers are facing today require the development of new system planning tools for analyzing generation and environmental policy options in the transmission-constrained electricity market. The requirements of a power-system equivalent to be used with such tools are very different from those assumed in the traditional network reduction process. To solve this issue, a novel structure-preserving network equivalent is proposed in this paper for modeling large power systems in the context of analyzing policy options and emissions. In the proposed method, a power system is first clustered into zones based on the similarity of the power transfer distribution factors (PTDFs); network reduction is achieved by aggregating buses (generators/loads) on a zonal basis and modeling inter-zonal transactions (power flows) using equivalent transmission lines. The proposed equivalent is superior to existing bus-aggregation-based equivalents in its accuracy under both the base case and change-case operating conditions. In addition, the method is more computationally efficient than other bus aggregation methods proposed heretofore. This paper also examined several classic clustering techniques and identified their performance and computational efficiencies when applied to very large power systems. To support distribution planning and operations engineers, this paper describes an optimal methodology for specifying smart inverter settings that will improve photovoltaic (PV) integration into distribution systems. The dynamic nature of the distribution system requires that a range of load and solar conditions be considered for this purpose. Time-series analysis was performed using Open-source Distribution System Simulator modeling environment to determine the overall impact on the distribution feeder. For the feeder investigated, the use of smart inverters was evaluated for mitigating potential voltage-related issues by reducing the magnitude and/or number of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) voltage violations, as well as meeting other objectives like increasing in substation power factor and reducing distribution system losses. Continual advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) are revolutionizing virtual education and bringing new tools on the market that provide virtual solutions to a range of problems. Nevertheless, nonvirtual experimentation using computer-aided control system design tools is still fundamental for future engineers. This paper describes a control course laboratory element, which is designed to teach electronic control engineering, in which students use a networked control system to steer and drive an electric car prototype. Multidisciplinary in nature, this laboratory allows students to take advantage of their previous academic training, as they model the plant from an open-loop test and contrast the simulated behavior with experimental results obtained on the prototype. A goal in this work was that students, across multiple engineering disciplines, should be able to integrate the knowledge acquired throughout their degree studies. An evaluation of students' grades, and their perception of the course, was conducted; this confirmed the educational benefits of the approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Six years of sustained efforts to recognize telecommunication engineering (TE) as a distinct education discipline came to a successful conclusion on November 1, 2014, with ABET?s approval of its 2015-2016 Criteria for Electrical, Computer, Communications, Telecommunication(s) and Similarly Named Engineering Programs. This paper narrates the history of the Telecommunication Engineering Education (TEE) initiative and movement (2008–2014) which resulted in recognition of this field as a distinct engineering education discipline in the US and 28 other countries. We describe how the case for this recognition was made successfully, based on advances in network science and engineering. We discuss some aspects of the new ABET criteria, and how they relate to ongoing and anticipated changes in the arena of engineering education. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Software systems are increasingly regulated. Software engineers therefore must determine which requirements have met or exceeded their legal obligations and which requirements have not. Requirements that have met or exceeded their legal obligations are legally implementation ready, whereas requirements that have not met or exceeded their legal obligations need further refinement. In this paper, we examine how software engineers make these determinations using a multi-case study with three cases. Each case involves assessment of requirements for an electronic health record system that must comply with the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and is measured against the evaluations of HIPAA compliance subject matter experts. Our first case examines how individual graduate-level software engineering students assess whether the requirements met or exceeded their HIPAA obligations. Our second case replicates the findings from our first case using a different set of participants. Our third case examines how graduate-level software engineering students assess requirements using the Wideband Delphi approach to deriving consensus in groups. Our findings suggest that the average graduate-level software engineering student is ill-prepared to write legally compliant software with any confidence and that domain experts are an absolute necessity. During the last decade, researchers have proposed a number of model transformations enabling performance predictions. These transformations map performance-annotated software architecture models into stochastic models solved by analytical means or by simulation. However, so far, a detailed quantitative evaluation of the accuracy and efficiency of different transformations is missing, making it hard to select an adequate transformation for a given context. This paper provides an in-depth comparison and quantitative evaluation of representative model transformations to, e.g., queueing petri nets and layered queueing networks. The semantic gaps between typical source model abstractions and the different analysis techniques are revealed. The accuracy and efficiency of each transformation are evaluated by considering four case studies representing systems of different size and complexity. The presented results and insights gained from the evaluation help software architects and performance engineers to select the appropriate transformation for a given context, thus significantly improving the usability of model transformations for performance prediction.
