Empirical and theoretical arguments are presented against a framesemantic grounding of construction grammar and thus against a holistic unification of meaning and world knowledge. A modular conception is the basis of the interplay between construction and projection in Goldberg (1995). Goldberg's attempt to include frame semantics is at odds with this foundation and must be considered a failure. The same is true for the continuation by Boas (2003). The argumentation is supplemented, among other things, by the reference to the contrast of a perceptual system and a linguistic system of cognition in cognitive psychology and by the necessity to take a modular concept as a basis in the area of syntactic-semantic ambiguity of sentences. The aim of this paper is to take a close look at John McGahern's mind style through the language of the heroine Elizabeth Reegan and other characters, in his 1963 novel The Barracks. Specifically, attention will be drawn to how the linguistic choices shape the figurative language to cast the author's controversial views on the religion-pervaded puritan Irish society that he knew so well. This will be done from two different perspectives. One perspective is through the breast cancer afflicted heroine, who asserts herself as a free thinker and a woman of science, in a society where priests have a strong influence at all social levels, and most women settle for housekeeping. The other is also through Elizabeth, together with other minor characters, who dare question some of the basic well-established ideological assumptions, in a series of examples where the author skilfully raises two parallel dichotomies, namely, FAITH versus REASON, and DARKNESS versus LIGHT. At a linguistic level, the present analysis relies on precepts from Frame Semantics, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and Cognitive Grammar. This study argues for a frame semantic approach to the treatment of Taoist terms, which are Chinese culture-specific. It takes three Taoist aesthetic terms 虚(xu), 无(wu) and 静(jing) as a case study to explore how Chinese-English dictionaries can make use of semantic frames in the treatment of Taoist terms. As the study shows, a Taoist-aesthetics frame can be constructed in comparison with the Aestheticsframe in FrameNet. When treating Taoist terms, the core frame element "Entity" facilitates the meaning explanation by making the terms more intelligible. The non-core frame element "Circumstances" should be highlighted as it helps the dictionary to provide a more accurate definition of Taoist terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In her rich paper, Friederike Moltmann provides an extension of standard (= sentence-based) truthmaker semantics that (i) generalizes the familiar truthmaking relation to attitudinal, modal, and intensional objects and that (ii) applies the result of this generalization (called I object-based truthmaker semantics i , hereafter "OTS") to the interpretation of different kinds of mental attitude reports (incl. reports with clause-taking and with intensional transitive verbs). The chunking problem is central to linguistics, semiotics, and poetics: How do we learn to organize a language into patterns and to use those patterns creatively? Linguistics has mainly offered two answers, one based on rule inference through innate capacities for processing and the other based on usage and on outstanding capacities for memory and retrieval. Both views are based on induction and compositionality. The Parry–Lord theory of oral composition-in-performance has argued that oral singers produce complex poems out of rehearsed improvisation through the mastery of a system of formulas, chunks that integrate phrasal, metrical, and semantic structures. The framework of formulaic creativity proposed here argues that the cognitive study of oral poetics can provide crucial insights into the chunking problem. I show the major connections between Parry–Lord and usage-based cognitive linguistics, mainly Construction Grammar and Frame Semantics. However, these approaches still remain compositional and thus struggle to model creativity and learning in oral poetry and everyday speech. The alternative is to explore a model of formulaic creativity not based on compositional patterns, but on wide learning for connecting discriminative perceptual features directly to semantic contrasts within a complex dynamic system, without the intermediation of a set of discrete units. Constructicography can be defined as a blend between Construction Grammar and Practical Lexicography, which aims at developing constructicons: repositories of form and function pairings in a language. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of this emerging field by (i) tracking the origins of both Frame Semantics and Construction Grammar and the repercussions of their intertwined developments to Computational Lexicography and Constructicography; (ii) comparing the impacts of the different degrees of interconnection between constructicons and framenets and (iii) discussing the possible applications of these resources. Also, we argue that Constructicography, while obviously building on the accumulated knowledge compiled by numerous Construction Grammar approaches to language, also contributes to its mother theory, since the effort to build coherent formalized computational resources forces constructionist analysis to go beyond describing families of constructions into the enterprise of describing a coherent construction grammar of a language. This article presents the lexicographical-phraseological research project GEPHRI (Usage-based Phraseology of Italian), whose theoretical foundation lies at the interface between corpus-based construction grammar and frame semantics. First, the theoretical framework will be defined (chapter 2) and then the concepts 'internalʼ and 'external syntaxʼ will be discussed (chapter 3). In this paper, we present a case study of German light verb constructions (LVCs) with the posture verb stehen 'stand' which builds on the insights of different works dealing with non-light uses of posture verbs. Starting from the literal uses of posture verbs, we will show how the meaning components of these uses are systematically exploited in the different interpretational patterns of stehen LVCs. In particular, we will discuss the effect of the choice of the preposition and how it interacts with the meaning of the light verb and the noun. Since the variant of frame semantics (e.g., Barsalou 1992; Petersen 2007, 2015) adopted in our analysis allows for a uniform representation of nouns, verbs and prepositions, we can make explicit reference to all the relevant meaning components of light verb constructions in a single format. Acquaintance with the non-sensory cognitive phenomenology of a given intentional content can act as a Fregean sense presenting that content. This provides (i) a mechanism for acquaintance with (a kind of) sense, (ii) a sense that is subject and context invariant, and (iii) a mechanism for the immediate presentation of a referent. This kind of sense can be used to defend acquaintance-based development of Frege's claim that when a sentence S is embedded in an attitude ascription it refers to the thought that S expresses in that context (and not its unembedded referent, the true).
