The article discusses the use of algorithms to design non-naturally occurring proteins that are optimized for desired properties such as improved stability and stronger and more specific binding to ligands. Topics include the availability of efficient and accurate algorithms for protein design using a simplified pairwise discrete model of protein chemistry, and the ability of algorithms to maintain provable guarantees and computational tractability while introducing more realistic models of protein chemistry.
