Researchers from the Graduate Program of Biomedical Engineering in Toronto, Canada, have developed a new method for creating three-dimensional clusters of cells called spheroids, which can be used as tumor models for cancer research. The method, called Microfluidically-generated Encapsulated Spheroids (M-gels), uses an all-aqueous droplet microfluidics platform to form hydrogel multicellular spheroids (MCSs) without the use of cytotoxic organic solvents. The researchers demonstrated that the MCSs remained viable for 6 days and could be used for cancer drug testing, showing dose-dependent cell death with the drug doxorubicin.
