The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) has previously been recorded in marine density flow sedimentary rocks of the Forties Member, Sele Formation, North Sea Basin. Two cored well sections with existing δ 13C records were analysed for their total palynofloras. Using statistically defined microplankton groups and diversity data, the Sele Formation Unit S1 depositional sequence and its maximum flooding surface was identified in both wells. This highlighted that deposition of the Forties Fan complex began significantly earlier than the inception of the PETM in the proximal fan area. Palynofloras from the Central and West Axial fairways of the Forties Fan have previously been used to indicate increased rainfall, erosion and onset of Forties Fan deposition at the PETM inception. However, winterwet floodplain communities typify the coeval East Axial Fairway, whereas the dominance of swamp-derived communities in the West and Central Axial Fairway sediments reflects source palaeogeography overriding the regional winterwet climate signal. Palynofloras reflecting regional increased seasonality and lower moisture availability increase immediately before the PETM CIE onset, but reflect climate warming over the hyperthermal. However, there is no correlation between Forties Fan initiation and the PETM. NE Atlantic margin basin flank uplift in response to synrift volcanism is indicated as the driving mechanism behind Forties Fan inception. The architecture of canyon-fills can provide a valuable record of the link between tectonics, sedimentation and depositional processes in submarine settings. We investigated the role of plate tectonics in the initiation and evolution of submarine canyons. We demonstrate that events at the plate tectonic scale (i.e. continental break-up and shortening) have a first-order influence on the initiation and development of submarine canyons. The Late Cretaceous (c. 65 Ma) separation of Australia and Antarctica initially resulted in extensional fault systems, which then formed a steep stair-shaped palaeoseabed. Subsequently, the Late Miocene (c. 5 Ma) collision of Australia and Eurasia resulted in substantial uplift and exhumation on the SE Australian continental margin. These tectonic events led to elevated seismicity, which ultimately gave rise to gravity-driven processes (i.e. turbidity currents and mass wasting processes) and formed the base of the canyon. The inherited stair-shaped topography then facilitated further gravity-driven processes that established a mature sediment conduit extending from the shallow marine shelf to the abyssal plain. We suggest that the stratigraphic architecture of canyons can be used as an archive to record tectonic movements. Moreover, the factors that precondition and trigger gravity-driven processes can induce canyon initiation and facilitate canyon development. In a source-to-sink sedimentary system, multiple processes have the potential to modify the sediment composition during sediment generation at the source, through transport, deposition and burial. To investigate these issues, a multi-proxy provenance study of deep-water and shallow-marine sandstones from the mid-Carboniferous Clare Basin was undertaken, utilizing zircon and apatite U–Pb geochronology, heavy mineral analysis (including apatite trace element data) and petrography. Data from the deep-water submarine fans show a similar provenance signal to the shallow-marine sandstones. Data from across the Clare Basin stratigraphy indicate that sands were probably and consistently derived from the south and SW, with a portion of the detritus being recycled from Old Red Sandstone basins to the south. The provenance signal, however, shows spatial and temporal variations across the basin that are explained by fluctuations in the amount of recycled sediments and are linked with the evolving Variscan Orogenic Belt. Heavy mineral data from both shallow-marine and deep-water sandstones suggest a basin configuration with a delta system feeding directly into the deep basin. In an attempt to understand the relative importance of climate and tectonics in modulating coarse-grained sediment flux to a tectonically active basin during what many researchers believe to be a greenhouse period, we have studied the Middle Eocene deep-marine Aínsa Basin, Spanish Pyrenees. We use orbital tuning of many spectral gamma-ray-logged fine-grained siliciclastic sections, already shown to contain Milankovitch frequencies, in conjunction with a new high-resolution palaeomagnetic study through the basin sediments, to identify polarity reversals in the basin as anchor points to allow the conversion of a depth-stratigraphy to a chronostratigraphy. We use these data, in conjunction with a new age model incorporating new biostratigraphic data, to pace the development of the deep-marine sandy submarine fans over c. 8 million years. Timing for the sandy submarine fans shows that, unlike for the fine-grained interfan sediments, coarse-grained delivery to the basin was more complex. Approximately 72% of the sandy fans are potentially coincident with the long-eccentricity (400 kyr) minima and, therefore, potentially recording changing climate. The stratigraphic position of some sandy fans is at variance with this, specifically those that likely coincide with a period of known increased tectonic activity within the Aínsa Basin, which we propose represents the time when the basin was converted into a thrust-top basin (Gavarnie thrust sheet), presumably associated with rapid uplift and redeposition of coarse clastics into deep-marine environments. We also identify sub-Milankovitch climate signals such as the c. 41.5 Ma Late Lutetian Thermal Maximum. This study demonstrates the complex nature of drivers on deep-marine sandy fans in a tectonically active basin over c. 8 Myr. Findings of this study suggest that, even during greenhouse periods, sandy submarine fans are more likely linked with times of eccentricity minima and climate change, broadly consistent with the concept of lowstand fans. However, hysteresis effects in orogenic processes of mountain uplift, erosion and delivery of coarse siliciclastics via fluvial systems to coastal (deltaic) and shallow-marine environments likely contributed to the complex signals that we recognize, including the 2–3 Myr time gap between the onset of deep-marine fine-grained sediments in the early development of the Aínsa Basin and the arrival of the first sandy fans. The Dukla Nappe in the Skrzydlna area exposes two types of mélange reflecting two different phases of basinal and tectonic evolution of the Outer West Carpathian orogen in its Polish sector. The Oligocene-age sedimentary mélange (olistostrome) is related to growth of the accretionary wedge, whereas the Miocene-age diapiric mélange postdates the orogenic thrusting. Textural and structural features of the very coarse-grained sedimentary mélange suggest non-cohesive debris flows and high-density turbidity currents as predominant emplacement mechanisms. Growth strata, associated with progressive unconformities, and facies contrast between the underlying fine-grained unit and the overlying olistostrome reflect a considerable uplift of the source area and rotation of the adjacent part of the basin floor. The olistostrome and the overlying turbidite succession form a retrogressive sequence interpreted as a submarine canyon infill grading to a small submarine fan. The diapiric mélange, injected into the Oligocene-age succession of the Dukla Nappe, contains the Early and Late Cretaceous-age blocks and matrix derived from the underlying Silesian Nappe. The features reflecting diapiric emplacement include matrix proportion increase and block content decrease towards the mélange margins, scaly fabric and shear zones. Detailed sequence stratigraphic frameworks have been produced for most of the Cenozoic deposits around the North Atlantic and Greenland Sea. However, the sequence stratigraphic evolution of the NE Greenland shelf, a significant part of the Atlantic Ocean margin, has so far never been interpreted. This study provides, for the first time, a detailed sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the NE Greenland shelf since the late Eocene. The tectonic evolution, eustatic sea-level change and the impact of glaciations are integrated into a consistent geological history. Based on the identification of pronounced unconformities and their correlative conformities, ten stratigraphic sequences are identified. The onset of deposition is defined by a pronounced erosional event, where late Paleocene tectonic activity caused mass wasting of the uplifted footwall of the Danmarkshavn Ridge along a c. 200 km section of the ridge. A second pronounced unconformity developed across the margin during the mid-Miocene, which caused forced regressive submarine fans to prograde across the margin. The following tectonic quiet period is overlain by glaciomarine deposits, with evidence of ice deformation reaching the present day shelf break. An integrated, multiscale analysis of the Ross Sandstone documents important evolutionary patterns of a structurally confined submarine fan. Through time, the following are evident: (1) depocenters of high-frequency stratigraphic cycles stack vertically, (2) the depositional area increased, (3) regional paleocurrent patterns define a fanlike pattern, (4) the Ross Sandstone correlates in the landward direction to a bypass surface, (5) the Ross Sandstone inherited the basin physiography from the preceding Visean carbonates, and (6)~the Ross Sandstone is ponded in the Carboniferous Shannon Basin. These observations demonstrate that the submarine fan filled an actively subsiding, structurally confined basin in an aggradational pattern. A high-resolution geologic map and a cross section of the Ross Sandstone at Loop Head Peninsula depict the location and stratigraphic architecture of every exposure of the Ross Sandstone. These data reveal that (1) lobes are the dominant architectural element (by area) at all stratigraphic positions in the Ross Sandstone; (2) although channels are the most commonly studied features in the Ross Sandstone, they occupy 7% or less of the total cross sectional area of the formation; (3) channels increase upward at the expense of lobes; (4) slumps increase upward; and (5) percent sandstone decreases upward mostly because of an increase in slumps. These trends define an increasing architectural diversity upward within the Ross Sandstone. Observations in the Ross Sandstone coupled with regional patterns for younger formations in the shallowing-upward, basin-fill succession are used to introduce a unifying model for the stratigraphic evolution of the Namurian strata in the basin. The model proposes that each formation in the shallowing-upward succession reflects its own depositional system related to an evolving landscape, and each was sourced from a different direction. This study quantifies vertical trends in stratigraphic features and analyzes them in a statistical manner to test the significance of external controls on local stacking patterns. The statistical analysis reveals that temporal changes in regional conditions, including sediment supply, source area, and basin shape, are statistically and empirically related to local changes in stratigraphy, including architectural element associations and percent sandstone. These relationships suggest that fans with a larger area have more architectural diversity and heterogeneity than their smaller counterparts. Regardless of fan area, lobes are the dominant architectural element. Also, source area is related to the type of architectural element present and percent sandstone. Lobes and their genetically related channels were sourced from the south, whereas slumps and heterolithic strata are mostly sourced from the west. Physical similarities, including climate, eustasy, size and shape of the basin, thickness of stratigraphic cycles, regional stacking patterns, subsidence, percent sandstone, and architectural elements between the Ross Sandstone and the ponded phase of the northern Gulf of Mexico minibasin-fill successions, imply that the Ross Sandstone is an excellent outcrop analog for these successions.
