This report investigates current trends in libraries and museums regarding the use of digitization and other technologies. In 2001, the Institute of Museum and Library Services conducted the first-ever study of the status of new technology adoption and digitization in the nation's museums and libraries. The baseline study identified pockets of digitization activity and planning that were making library and museum collections widely available. While gaps existed between large and small institutions, basic technologies had found their way into a majority of libraries and museums. This second study seeks to dig deeper and find out more about how and why our cultural institutions use technology and digitize their collections. It explores barriers as well as capacity and planning issues. The 2004 survey was conducted among five groups: museums, public libraries, academic libraries, archives, and state library administrative agencies. This survey report tells us statistically about the kinds of technology in use, the extent of digitization activities, and the adoption, maintenance, funding of, and staffing for technology and digitization activities at museums and libraries. Among the key findings: (1) Small museums and public libraries have made dramatic progress, although they still lag behind their larger counterparts; (2) Libraries and museums are putting services and activities online to manage their institutions and provide enhanced public service; (3) Insufficient funding and staff time are barriers to implementing technology; (4) Assessment of user and visitor needs is strongest among academic libraries and state library administrative agencies and weak among other groups; (5) Digitization activities have increased for all groups, with state library administrative agencies and archives leading the way; (6) While more institutions have digitization policies in place than was the case in 2001, many institutions that are digitizing do not have digitization policies; (7) With a substantial number of materials left to digitize, institutions are held back by lack of funding, lack of staff time, and other pressing priorities; (8) While collaborative digitization efforts are underway, they are not yet widespread; and (9) Only a small portion of museums and libraries assess user and visitor needs for digitized collections and services. This document is the third of four in a series of guides to the government documents collection in the academic library at St. Mary's University (San Antonio, Texas); the library has been a selective depository for U.S. Government publicatins since 1964. This guide provides a description of the Census Bureau publications available in the library's documents collection, including documents on the census of population and housing, economic censuses, the census of agriculture, the census of governments, compendia, important serial publications, and international information. The final section discusses aids to the access and use of these library census materials, including specialized guides and indexes. (CGD)

This document is the fourth of four in a series of guides to the government documents collection in the academic library at St. Mary's University (San Antonio, Texas); the library has been a selective depository for U.S. Government publications since 1964. Focusing on the scientific and technical documents that are available in the library's documents collection, this guide is divided into seven broad subject areas: (1) General and Interdisciplinary Sources; (2) History of Science and Technology; (3) Life Sciences; (4) Health Sciences; (5) Earth Sciences; (6) Astronomy; and (7) Engineering. Within each subject area, arrangement of documents is by type of publication, such as bibliographies, statistics, and indexes. It is noted that, in collecting these documents, the library focuses on subject areas and levels of treatment that support university curricula, and that special attention is paid to major series collected by the library in each subject area. This edition of a statistical report on Colorado's academic libraries begins with a section of tables organized by sector (public or private) and board (governing board or agency) that includes library-by-library statistics as well as summary figures for boards and sectors. Following these tables are three sections of charts that illustrate how Colorado's university, college, and community college libraries rank on selected statistics. In contrast to previous reports strict sector and board comparisons were dropped for these charts to enable more reasonable comparisons. Data elements are those of the Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) to enable comparisons with other states when the figures are available, including: (1) library staff; (2) staff expenditures; (3) collection expenditures; (4) miscellaneous operating expenditures; (5) library collections; (6) annual library services; and (7) library services per typical week. The charts illustrating statistics and input-output measures are grouped for Colorado universities, colleges, and community colleges. (SLD)

The purpose of this manual is to assist libraries throughout Alabama in requesting materials and information through the Alabama Library Information Network (ALIN). Designed as part of an ongoing effort that will be updated, the guide contains profiles of the interlibrary loan policies from academic, public, special, and junior college libraries who are contributors to the Alabama Interlibrary Catalog (ALICAT), a computer-output-microfiche union catalog, and/or the Alabama Union List of Serials (AULS), which is published in microfiche and in print. The first three parts of the manual cover: (1) the structure, tools, and services of ALIN; (2) procedures for using ALIN; and (3) the network components of the system, i.e., the Alabama Public Library Service and Reference and Interlibrary Loan (RILL) Service Centers. The fourth part presents holding symbols for ALICAT contributors, holding codes of AULS contributors cross-referenced to ALICAT codes, OCLC symbols cross-referenced to ALICAT codes, and the interlibrary loan policies of the 94 contributor libraries. Appended matter includes a 13-item glossary; the 1988 revised "Interlibrary Loan Code for the State of Alabama"; the "National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1980"; a list of microform collections available from the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS); guidelines for telefacsimile use within Alabama; and rules and regulations for APLS net-lending programs. This guide to microform collections and resources at Milner Library is intended to alert users to available research potential on microform and to aid in the location and use of these materials. Included are (1) collections based on previously published bibliographies; (2) holdings of libraries; (3) collections of books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, and pamphlets gathered from various sources and treated as a unit; and (4) collections of documents of U.S. state and federal governments, foreign governments, and international organizations. Each of the 156 entries contains title, location, microform media, classification code, description, and citing indexes. Access to the list of collections is provided by title, subject, and academic department indexes. Collections include some official records in French, German, Russian, and Spanish. (SW)

Designed to assist legislators and legislative staff in using the New York State Library more effectively, this handbook provides a description of what the library is, what it has to offer, and how to use it. Specifically, sections are devoted to (1) the Library itself--general facts, descriptions, locations; (2) special services for the legislature--reference and research, orientation and library tours, problems and assistance; (3) library publications and research for the legislature--what is available, "Legislative Trends," requesting research; (4) how to find material in the library--microfiche catalogs, uncataloged collections, computerized data bases; and (5) subject reference services and collections-- humanities, law and social sciences, science/health/technology, manuscripts and special collections, library for the blind and physically handicapped, gift and exchange section, how to get state documents, donating legislative publications, and interlibrary loan service. Also included are a list of public library systems, central libraries, and reference and research resources systems; a list of publications, 1971-78; sample request forms; and the floor plan to the Library's seventh floor where its main public service points are. This pamphlet was designed to acquaint faculty at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice with general non-criminal justice services available in the college library for their own research and study. Emphasis is placed on using the reference collection of a small library and the expertise of the library staff to identify and locate information sources in larger repositories. Included are chapters on access to other libraries within New York City; publishing opportunities in journals; grants available and awarded; book catalogs of other library collections; directories of special subject collections and research centers; online searching; and reference sources for locating books, microforms, journals, manuscripts, newspapers, statistics, and government documents. A selective annotated bibliography is provided for each type of secondary source material. The final chapter describes primary source material on criminal justice available in the John Jay Library.
