Institutional discovery environments now serve as central resource databases for researchers in the academic environment. Over the last several decades, there have been numerous discovery layer research inquiries centering primarily on user satisfaction measures of discovery system effectiveness. This study focuses on the creation of a largely automated method for evaluating discovery layer quality, utilizing the bibliographic sources from student research projects. Building on past research, the current study replaces a semiautomated Excel Fuzzy Lookup Add-In process with a fully scripted R-based approach, which employs the stringdist R package and applies the Jaro-Winkler distance metric as the matching evaluator. The researchers consider the error rate incurred by relying solely on an automated matching metric. They also use Open Refine for normalization processes and package the tools together on an OSF site for other institutions to use. Since the R-based approach does not require special processing or time and can be reproduced with minimal effort, it will allow future studies and users of our method to capture larger sample sizes, boosting validity. While the assessment process has been streamlined and shows promise, there remain issues in establishing solid connections between research paper bibliographies and discovery layer use. Subsequent research will focus on creating alternatives to paper titles as search proxies that better resemble genuine information-seeking behavior and comparing undergraduate and graduate student interactions within discovery environments. Research paper recommendation has been a hot research area for the last few decades. Thus far, numerous different paper recommendation approaches have been proposed. Some of these include methods based on metadata, content similarity, collaborative filtering, and citation analysis, among others. Citation analysis methods include bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis. Much research has been done in the area of co-citation analysis. Researchers have also performed experiments using the proximity of in-text citations in co-citation analysis and have found that it improves the accuracy of paper recommendation. In co-citation analysis, the similarity is discovered based on the frequency of co-cited papers in different research papers and those citing papers may belong to different areas. However, when proximity is used to calculate co-citation, the accuracy of recommendations improves significantly. Bibliographic coupling finds bibliographic coupling strength based on the common references between two papers. In bibliographic coupling, a large number of common references of two papers means that they belong to the same area, unlike co-citation analysis, in which there is a possibility that the citing papers may belong to different areas. Based on the observation that with the use of proximity analysis the accuracy in cases of co-citation analysis has improved, this paper investigates if the accuracy of paper recommendation can be further improved by using proximity analysis in bibliographic coupling. This paper proposes an approach that extends the traditional bibliographic coupling by exploiting the proximity of in-text citations of bibliographically coupled articles. The proposed approach takes into account the proximity of in-text citations by clustering the in-text citations using a density-based algorithm called DBSCAN. Experiments on a data set of research papers are presented to show that there is a substantial increase in accuracy of the recommendations produced by DBSCAN based on proximity analysis of in-text citations compared to traditional bibliographic coupling and content-based approaches. Background: Libraries provide access to databases with auto-cite features embedded into the services; however, the accuracy of these auto-cite buttons is not very high in humanities and social sciences databases. Case Presentation: This case compares two biomedical databases, Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed, to see if either is reliable enough to confidently recommend to students for use when writing papers. A total of 60 citations were assessed, 30 citations from each citation generator, based on the top 30 articles in PubMed from 2010 to 2020. Conclusions: Error rates were higher in Ovid MEDLINE than PubMed but neither database platform provided error-free references. The auto-cite tools were not reliable. Zero of the 60 citations examined were 100% correct. Librarians should continue to advise students not to rely solely upon citation generators in these biomedical databases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Open access (OA) publishing, whereby authors, their institutions, or their granting bodies pay or provide a repository through which peer-reviewed work is available online for free, is championed as a model to increase the number of citations per paper and disseminate results widely, especially to researchers in developing countries. We compared the number of citations of OA and non-OA papers in six journals and four books published since 2000 to test whether OA increases number of citations overall and increases citations made by authors in developing countries. After controlling for type of paper (e.g., review or research paper), length of paper, authors’ citation profiles, number of authors per paper, and whether the author or the publisher released the paper in OA, OA had no statistically significant influence on the overall number of citations per journal paper. Journal papers were cited more frequently if the authors had published highly cited papers previously, were members of large teams of authors, or published relatively long papers, but papers were not cited more frequently if they were published in an OA source. Nevertheless, author-archived OA book chapters accrued up to eight times more citations than chapters in the same book that were not available through OA, perhaps because there is no online abstracting service for book chapters. There was also little evidence that journal papers or book chapters published in OA received more citations from authors in developing countries relative to those journal papers or book chapters not published in OA. For scholarly publications in conservation biology, only book chapters had an OA citation advantage, and OA did not increase the number of citations papers or chapters received from authors in developing countries. Purpose. To provide a bibliographical-historical perspective and main interest in the field of myopia. Methods. In this bibliographic study, the Web of Science Database was searched from 1999 to 2018. Recorded parameters included journal name, impact factor, year and language, number of authors, type and origin, methodology, number of subjects, funding, and topics. Results. Epidemiological assessments were the leading type of article (28%), and half of the papers were prospective studies. The number of citations for multicenter studies was significantly higher (P = 0.034). The articles were published in 27 journals, with the majority in Investigative Ophthalmology, Vision Sciences (28%), and Ophthalmology (26%). Etiology, signs and symptoms, and treatment equally encompassed the topics. Papers addressing etiology, specifically genetic and environmental factors (P = 0.029), signs and symptoms (P = 0.001), and prevention, specifically public awareness (47%, P = 0.005), received significantly more citations. Treatment to decrease myopia progression was a much more common topic (68%) than refractive surgery (32%). Optical treatment was the most popular modality (39%). Half of the publications came from 3 countries: the United States (US), Australia, and Singapore. The highest ranked and cited papers came from the US (P = 0.028) and Singapore (P = 0.028). Conclusions. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the top-cited articles on myopia. There is a predominance of epidemiological assessments and multicenter studies originating from the US, Australia, and Singapore, assessing etiology, signs and symptoms, and prevention. These are more frequently cited, emphasizing the great interest in mapping the increase in the incidence of myopia in different countries, public health awareness, and myopia control. The author discusses the significance of referencing in research right from the conception of the study question until its delivery as a publication. Topics covered include the preparations that a writer should take when organizing the reference to avoid bias in his/her research/writing, how to weigh references in terms of their value to the paper, and rules when choosing appropriate references.

Aims: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of papers published by the RELIEVE journal in the last 15 years. Considered papers were indexed by the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), which is a new Web of Science (WOS) database that aims to correct the poor coverage of national journals in some countries. Methods: Data source: 195 RELIEVE articles indexed according to the ESCI. Some 7,408 citations included in these 195 papers were analyzed. A total of 599 relevant citations recorded by the journal were also analyzed. Topics covered by the journal were also studied. For this purpose, author-keywords from the 195 papers were merged and analyzed using the VOSviewer software tool. Results: Papers included an average of 38.19 ± 6.5 citations. The authors and journals cited were mainly Spanish but a significant proportion of foreign impact journals (40%) were also found. The references cited in RELIEVE came almost exclusively from Spanish journals included in WOS in the education and educational research categories. The majority of published papers also came from Spanish institutions (75.6%), particularly the universities of Valencia and Granada. Most citations came from research papers published in Spanish journals. Amongst the research topics to have occupied the pages of RELIEVE, those related to higher education and PISA most stood out. Conclusions: The citations identified reveal appropriate consumption of international scientific literature by the publishing authors. However, these citations also highlighted a strong focus in published research on local issues and, as a consequence, this research is not highly considered by researchers from other countries. At the moment, RELIEVE's presence in ESCI-WOS has not yet been translated into gains regarding reduced research isolation and has failed to mobilize its international incorporation in terms of a more global impact. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between traditional citation indexes representing hot papers in the field of "Clinical Medicine" and their bookmarking and readership in "Mendeley software". The citation counts of hot papers were extracted from Essential Science Indicators (ESI) and Web of Science (WoS). As an applied research adopting a descriptive-exploratory method, the present study used the Essential Science Indicators to retrieve hot articles published between 2014 and 2016, indexed in the category "Medical Sciences". Each record was then searched in Mendeley to obtain the number of readership of the paper and the academic status of the users. The results showed a significant positive correlation between Mendeley readership and citation indexes in both ESI and WoS. Moreover, the most frequently-cited articles in both databases attracted more readers in Mendeley than lowly-cited publications and both hypotheses were confirmed. Moreover, the findings revealed that Mendeley users had assigned a total number of 3847 tags to the hot papers, with the tags ranging in frequency from zero to 38 for individual articles. Compared with author keywords and Plus, about 10 percent of users' tags were either meaningless or repetitive. The value of present study shows that "Mendeley Sofware" with the possibility of tagging articles, can be used to create a searchable folksonomy of information and as a source of data in information retrieval studies, help professionals to manage their literatures and make their research life easier. This paper has made an attempt to highlight the Neurology research in global level as per the scientific publications appeared in the Web of Science citation database during the period 2006-2015. It found a total of 23, 335 publications were published by the global researchers in the field of Neurology. The average number of publications published was 2333.5 and the highest numbers of publications (3357) were published in the year 2015. A letter to the editor is presented in response to the article "Uncitedness of Indian scientific output" by K. C. Garg and S. Kumar.

An analysis of 4165 papers published during 2005-2014 on male breast cancer and indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded indicates that the publication output in this nascent field is increasing steadily. The output is scattered among 91 countries, and USA ranks first in the publication output as well as impact in terms of citations per paper (CPP) and relative citation impact (RCI). The global compound annual growth rate during the period of study is 6.2. Change in transformative activity index is highest for the People's Republic of China (PRC). However, impact of research output is low for PRC. The research output is highly scattered in terms of prolific institutions, authors and journals publishing research results. Most of the prolific institutions are located in USA. Among the prolific institutions, the highest value of CPP and RCI was for Massachusetts General Hospital (USA), and among authors the highest value of CPP and RCI was for Thompson D. from the University of Cambridge (England). Objective: To identify and analyze the 50 most-cited gastroenterology and hepatology articles originating from mainland China. Methods: We utilized the 2015 edition of Journal Citation Reports and PubMed to determine the 50 mostcited gastroenterology and hepatology articles from 75 professional journals and four leading journals in clinical medicine, which are The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and The British Medical Journal. Then we excluded the articles written outside mainland China and collected the basic information, including the title, authors, year of publication, source journal, city, institution, number of citations, and topic of the research. Results: The number of citations for the top 50 papers ranged from 279 to 89 (mean, 129). These articles were published between 2005 and 2012, in which 2009 was the year with the largest number of highly cited papers(13). All articles were published in 15 journals. The journal Hepatology published the largest number of articles(21), followed by Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology(4), Journal of Hepatology(4) and World Journal of Gastroenterology(4). The top 50 articles originated mainly from Shanghai(20), Guangzhou(13) and Beijing(6). Sun Yat-sen University produced most highly cited papers(10). The number of basic research was far more than clinical research, of which the ratio was about 1.78(32:18). In all these articles, hepatocellular carcinoma was the most-discussed topic(19), followed by hepatitis B virus(8) and endoscopic(5). Conclusions: Although a large gap remains between mainland China and the global community, the gastroenterology and hepatology research from China is gradually recognized by the world. This article presents a citation analysis of papers published between 1909 and 1954 by two ceased journals covering the abandoned field of eugenics. The aim of the study was to investigate the visible signs of current scientific impact of these old papers and find out if they are significant for reasons other than historical referencing. Our survey involved a three-stage citation analysis using the Web of Science Core Collection and content analysis of the citing papers. The citation counts were collected and classified by the citing years. Papers that had 25 or more citations from 2000 to 2014 were selected for further analysis and examined for their citations in 2014. This produced 941 papers citing 24 papers published between 1915 and 1954, 23 of which were published by the Annals of Eugenics, and one by the Eugenics Review. Four of the cited articles accounted for 87 percent of all citations received. Due to not all citing papers (941) published in 2014 were available in full text, only 70 percent of them were analysed using content analysis technique to examine and classify the reasons for citing. The findings suggest that these old journals left a strong scientific imprint with papers whose impact has been increased in the last decades. They were less cited because of the scientific problems they addressed at the time of publishing. In contrast, these papers were cited due to their innovative research methodologies that have become valuable instruments in many scientific disciplines that emerged later. The High Quality Science Index (HQSI) was constructed on the basis of the release of the Essential Science Indicators (Thomson Reuters) for the period from January 1, 2002 to August 31, 2012. The HQSI was computed for a country or territory as a sum of normalised scores of the mean impact (citations per paper) and the percentage of papers that reach the top-1% citation ranking. Expectedly, countries or territories that are producing larger Gross National Income per capita and allocate higher percentage of the produced economic wealth for the research and development (R&D) were more likely to achieve prominence in the scientific publications. The size of the country and its population were not important factors to excel in scientific research. Since economic and socio-demographic factors only partly predicted the quality of science in a given country or territory, there is considerable space for historical and science policy factors that could affect the quality of science in a given country. Several countries being in almost identical starting positions twenty years ago have developed on completely different trajectories dependent on policies and decisions made by their policy makers. This paper analyses the citation profiles (CP) of 130 researchers in fractional calculus. In a first phase, the Canberra distance is used to measure the similarities between the researchers' CP, and the multidimensional scaling technique (MDS) is adopted for processing and visualizing the information. In a second phase, the gamma probability distribution is used to fit the normalized CP and the gamma parameters are used to characterize the researchers. This study aims to compare the characteristics of citation disciplinary structure between the G7 countries and the BRICS countries. In this contribution, which uses about 1 million Web of Science publications and two publications years (1993 and 2013), we compare the G7 countries and the BRICS countries with regard to this type of structure. For the publication year 2013, cosine similarity values regarding the citation disciplinary structures of these countries (and of nine other countries) were used as input to cluster analysis. We also obtained cosine similarity values for a given country and its citation disciplinary structures across the two publication years. Moreover, for the publication year 2013, the within-country Jeffreys-Matusita distance between publication and citation disciplinary structure was measured. First, the citation disciplinary structures of countries depend on multiple and complex factors. It is therefore difficult to completely explain the formation and change of the citation disciplinary structure of a country. This study suggests some possible causes, whereas detailed explanations might be given by future research. Second, the length of the citation window used in this study is three years. However, scientific disciplines differ in their citation practices. Comparison between citations across disciplines using the same citation window length may affect the citation discipline structure results for some countries. First, the results of this study are based on the WoS database. However, in this database some fields are covered to a greater extent than others, which may affect the results for the citation discipline structure for some studied countries. In future research, we might repeat this study using another database (like Scopus) and, in that case, we would like to make comparisons between the two outcomes. Second, the use of a constant journal set yielded that a large share of the journals covered by WoS year 2013 is ignored in the study. Thus, disciplinary structure is studied based on a quite restricted set of publications. The three mentioned limitations should be kept in mind when the results of this study are interpreted. Disciplinary structure on country level is a highlighted topic for the S&T policy makers, especially for those come from developing countries. This study observes the disciplinary structure in the view of academic impact, and the result will provide some evidence to make decision for the discipline strategy and funding allocation. Besides, Jeffreys-Matusita distance is introduced to measure the similarity of citation disciplinary structure and publication disciplinary structure. By applying this measure, some new observations were drawn, for example, "Based on the comparison of publication disciplinary structure and citation disciplinary structure, the paper finds most BRICS counties have less impact with more publications". The outcome of the cluster analysis indicates that the G7 countries and BRICS countries are quite heterogeneous regarding their citation disciplinary structure. For a majority of the G7 countries, the citation disciplinary structure tend to be more stable compared to BRICS countries with regard to the years 1993 and 2013. Most G7 countries, with United States as an exception, turned out to have lower values on the Jeffreys-Matusita distance than BRICS countries, indicating a higher degree of heterogeneity between the publication and the citation disciplinary structure for the latter countries. In other words, BRICS countries still receive much less citations in most disciplines than their publication output would suggest. G7 countries can still expect more citations than is to be expected based on their publication output, thereby generating relatively more impact than BRICS countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the scholarly contribution of S R Ranganathan as reflected in Google Scholar Citations, Web of Science, and Scopus. This paper also identifies popularity of his published works, particularly which are highly referred by the researchers and LIS curriculum designers. His top three highly cited books are namely Prolegomena to Library Classification, The Five Laws of Library Science, and Colon Classification. His top three highly referred journal articles are titled "Hidden Roots of Classification", "Subject Heading and Facet Analysis", and "Colon Classification Edition 7 (1971): A Preview". This paper identifies the articles that cited his works extensively and got considerable citations from the other researchers. Top citing journal articles are namely "The Need for a Faceted Classification as the Basis of All Methods of Information Retrieval", "Ranganathan and the Net: Using Facet Analysis to Search and Organise the World Wide Web" and "Grounded Classification: Grounded Theory and Faceted Classification". These citing articles also indicate that Ranganathan is very relevant to today's researchers in interdisciplinary areas, particularly which belong to the fields of computer applications and information systems. An analysis of 17,344 papers published by Indian scientists and indexed by Web of Science in the discipline of organic chemistry and its sub-disciplines during 2004-2013 indicates that the Indian output has increased significantly in the later period. Academic institutions contributed about 46% of the total output followed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) with 26% of the total output. The most prolific institutions among them mainly belonging to academic institutions and CSIR contributed about 60% of the total output. The value of citation per paper for most of the prolific institutions was higher than the Indian average. Similar trend was observed for the relative citation impact. Indian researchers in the discipline of organic chemistry published their papers in international journals with impact factor greater than 1. Purpose – After the official definition of Open Educational Resources (OER) at the Forum on Open Courseware for Higher Education in Developing Countries in 2002, the concept was soon introduced to China and popularised among scholars, practitioners, and educators. After ten years of proliferation, it is important to explore the landscape of Chinese OER research. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper adopts social network analysis (SNA) to analyse the network defining the citations of 133 OER journal articles published in China. Findings – The findings illustrate that the academic circle of OER in China is small, which leads to restricted innovation. Most publications are produced by researchers working at comprehensive universities and normal universities (teachers colleges). Research limitations/implications – In these universities, a number of active OER researchers are emerging, but no OER research team can be identified from their citation networks. Currently, most OER research is still descriptive research, and only few case studies are being to gradually be conducted. Practical implications – As the Chinese OER research is still in the initial stage, more research projects in OER need to be explored to construct higher quality and more influential open content to achieve deep openness. Citation analysis of the Dialogue was conducted to get knowledge about the citation pattern; the most cited documents; references per article; references per year and proposed quantification for the documents published from 2014 to 2016. The quantitative approach was adopted for this study. The website of Dialogue was used for obtaining metadata about the research papers published during 2014- 2016. Google Scholar citation instead of Journal Citation Report was used for the calculation of proposed Impact Factor (IF). The major findings of the study reflect that the proposed calculated Cite Score of the Dialogue for the mentioned period is 0.14 whereas the proposed self-calculated Impact Factor is 0.22. The citation rate of documents published in 2014 was recorded more as compared to the rest of the years. The citation rate should be improved by the inclusion of Dialogue in indexing databases of international repute. WE USED BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS TO evaluate the citations associated with publications by trainees in the Fogarty International Center's International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development program. Papers published between 2004 and 2008 were identified for analysis. The outcome measures were total citations, h-index, and i-10. A total of 328 manuscripts were identified, with a yearly average of 66 publications and 363 citations. The median number of citations per paper is 3 (IQR Q1-Q3:6). 12.6% (n = 53) of papers were cited over 10 times and the h-index is 22, indicating that 22 papers had been cited at least 22 times. The data indicate that trainees have been productive and contributed to the scholarly literature. Future studies to benchmark this performance with other bioethics education programs are required to make interpretation of citation analysis more meaningful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper is the result of a research which aimed to review the current level of support and training provided for the reference management software (also known as citation management tools) by academic libraries. The data was gathered on the basis of a survey of Iranian universitie's websites. The results revealed that in about 50 percent of Iranian universities, there is no information about reference management software at their websites at all. In less than half of the remaining 39 universities, central library is responsible for introducing and training of citations and reference management software. Research deputies and faculty scholarly associations have been other organizers of reference management software training. Furthermore, the results show that more than 90 percent of universities perform their training in face to face format only. EndNote is the only citation management software supported approximately by all universities. Teaching other reference management tools, such as Mendeley or Zotero, has been very limited. Central libraries of 11 universities have regular training programs for EndNote. Authors suggest that librarians themselves get instruction on using citation management tools to be able to teach library users. Prior research has suggested that providing free and discounted access to the scientific literature to researchers in low-income countries increases article production and citation. Using traditional bibliometric indicators for institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, we analyze whether institutional access to TEEAL (a digital collection of journal articles in agriculture and allied subjects) increases: (i) article production; (ii) reference length; and (iii) number of citations to journals included in the TEEAL collection. Our analysis is based on nearly 20,000 articles - containing half a million references - published between 1988 and 2009 at 70 institutions in 11 African countries. We report that access to TEEAL does not appear to result in higher article production, although it does lead to longer reference lists (an additional 2.6 references per paper) and a greater frequency of citations to TEEAL journals (an additional 0.4 references per paper), compared to non-subscribing institutions. The New Review project investigated how to improve students' information searching skills and the resulting reference lists through a new approach to teaching the literature review. This paper reports on one element of this study, which analysed reference lists from 47 final-year projects written by Civil & Building Engineering undergraduate students (BEng and MSc). It finds a strong positive correlation between the literature review mark and overall mark for each project, as well as a slightly weaker correlation between the number of references cited and the mark received. An analysis of the number, age, and type of references cited is performed in addition to an investigation into the quality of the bibliographic citations themselves. This paper provides an insight into the citation analysis of research publications of the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) during the period 1972-2007. It analysed 2830 most valuable citations spread over 561 publications made by the NML scientists and researchers indexed in Science Citation Index (SCI) retrieved through the Web of Science. It determines the research and citation impact using parameters such as extent of citation received in terms of number of citation per paper, year wise break up of citation, domain wise citation, self citations and citation by others, diachronous self citation rate, citing authors, citing institutions, highly cited papers and categories of citing documents, citing journals and impact factor. A Bradford plot constructed to determine the core-citing journals shows that the curve is a typical S shape which indicates subject maturity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses publication and citation patterns in the Malaysian Journal of Computer Science (MJCS) from 1996-2006. The articles in MJCS are mostly written by Malaysian academics, with only limited inputs from international sources. Comparisons are made with the companion Malaysian Journal of Library and Information Science in terms of the type, number of references, length and numbers of authors for individual papers. The author co-citation analysis (ACA) method is commonly used to group authors of reference papers. Since the traditional ACA method analyzes only first authors of reference papers, it disregards the contributions of other coauthors and can only group each first author into one cluster. This study proposes an innovative ACA algorithm called “complete author pair (CAP) algorithm”, which groups complete author sets of reference papers into clusters and thus finds authors who may have expertise in more than one area. The CAP algorithm is implemented in two citation data banks that collected paper references from two ACM journals during 2002–2005. The results show that the CAP algorithm runs up to 90% of average precision in each citation bank when comparing against ACM CCS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The thematic and citation structures of Data and Knowledge Engineering (DKE) (1985–2007) are identified based on text analysis and citation analysis of the bibliographic records of full papers published in the journal. Temporal patterns are identified by detecting abrupt increases of frequencies of noun phrases extracted from titles and abstracts of DKE papers over time. Conceptual structures of the subject domain are identified by clustering analysis. Concept maps and network visualizations are presented to illustrate salient patterns and emerging thematic trends. Librarians have been using citation analysis as a means to determine the usage of their collection while others have used it look at undergraduate information behaviour. At the same time, various attempts are being made to relate citation analysis of bibliographies to information literacy competencies by mapping them to the performance indicators of established information literacy standards. This paper describes the analysis of bibliographies of final year project reports emanating from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya. A total of 73 reports were analysed using a pre-designed scoring sheet and results presented included number of pages, number of citations, types of sources used, usage of Web resources, currency of sources and citation style. The contents analysis of the bibliographies indicates: (a) the least number of citations per report is 6 and the most is 165 with the most number of citations within the range of 11 to 20 cites; (b) there are more Web citations than citations to books, journal articles, undergraduate reports, Masters' dissertations and conference papers; (c) there are more citation to .com than to .org, .edu, .net and other URL extensions; (d) most citations are not dated and most of those dated are from within the last three years with the most current being 2005 and the oldest dated citation is 1935; and (e) most references have their print citations cited correctly but the Web citations cited incorrectly. Only a handful of indicators could be matched to the information literacy performance indicators of the ALA/ACRL/STS 2005 Information Literacy Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology. Citation analyses in archaeology have detected prestige tactics, shifts in research agendas, and patterns of gender differentiation. This paper focuses on self-citation in archaeology and systematically analyzes the factors that affect rates of self-citation. Self-citation rates in archaeology are significantly higher than in socio-cultural anthropology but are average for a social science with interdisciplinary ties to the physical sciences. Self-citation correlates weakly with the gender of the citing author and the geographic and thematic focus of research, but correlates strongly with the age of the author. Additional analyses reveal partial evidence for the use of self-citation as a prestige tactic. The paper concludes with a discussion of citations to writers close to the author (mentors, friends). Soil erosion can present a major threat to agriculture due to loss of soil, nutrients, and organic carbon. Therefore, soil erosion modelling is one of the steps used to plan suitable soil protection measures and detect erosion hotspots. A bibliometric analysis of this topic can reveal research patterns and soil erosion modelling characteristics that can help identify steps needed to enhance the research conducted in this field. Therefore, a detailed bibliometric analysis, including investigation of collaboration networks and citation patterns, should be conducted. The updated version of the Global Applications of Soil Erosion Modelling Tracker (GASEMT) database contains information about citation characteristics and publication type. Here, we investigated the impact of the number of authors, the publication type and the selected journal on the number of citations. Generalized boosted regression tree (BRT) modelling was used to evaluate the most relevant variables related to soil erosion modelling. Additionally, bibliometric networks were analysed and visualized. This study revealed that the selection of the soil erosion model has the largest impact on the number of publication citations, followed by the modelling scale and the publication's CiteScore. Some of the other GASEMT database attributes such as model calibration and validation have negligible influence on the number of citations according to the BRT model. Although it is true that studies that conduct calibration, on average, received around 30% more citations, than studies where calibration was not performed. Moreover, the bibliographic coupling and citation networks show a clear continental pattern, although the co-authorship network does not show the same characteristics. Therefore, soil erosion modellers should conduct even more comprehensive review of past studies and focus not just on the research conducted in the same country or continent. Moreover, when evaluating soil erosion models, an additional focus should be given to field measurements, model calibration, performance assessment and uncertainty of modelling results. The results of this study indicate that these GASEMT database attributes had smaller impact on the number of citations, according to the BRT model, than anticipated, which could suggest that these attributes should be given additional attention by the soil erosion modelling community. The origin of this research is illuminated by CIBER's exploratory research on Trust in Scholarly Communications conducted in 2012-2013. This study's interest lies with Malaysian academic researchers both as producers and consumers and how they deal with the quality and trust consequences of the digital transition, especially, but not exclusively, the impact of social media and open access publishing on their scholarly communications. This paper reports on a survey on citation behaviour, part of a wider study of gauging quality and trustworthiness in scholarly communication in the emerging digital environment. It focuses on investigating what Malaysian researchers trust or find reliable to cite in their publications. In order to make the study results comparable, we adapted the same questionnaire that CIBER has developed and used in previous surveys. We used surveymonkey.com. a web-based questionnaire which has been widely used for surveys. The questionnaire went online on the 1 October 2014 and closed on the 30 December 2014. More than 400 respondents completed the questionnaire. The answers were analysed quantitatively and then grouped under descriptive headings of the types of reasons for citation provided. Similar to CIBER's study, the motivations for citing were found to be complex and multi-faceted but, in nearly all cases, researchers do regard the authority and trustworthiness of the cited source as an important factor in choosing to cite it. Citing behaviour includes an acknowledgement of useful intellectual content, and this process cannot be separated from the researcher's position in networks of trusted social and research influence. The digital transition has provided tools to help maintain and develop these social networks and it has also made it easier for researchers to investigate the credentials of the sources of documents. Peer-reviewed journals still hold influential. Measures of establishing trust and authority do not seem to have changed profoundly in Malaysia. The digital environment may bring ease and convenience to scholarly communication, but it gives more pressure for scholarly communication on high quality platforms. Looking at the researchers' trust-related views, it is emphasised that academic librarians apply their understanding of scholarly communication towards delivering the right services to meet the needs of the academic community. We introduce an indicator (DT) to measure the diffusion impact of scientific research. The indicator focuses on the variety of citing sources by giving a full credit when a new citing source makes an appearance, and a tapered credit when a new citing paper appears in an already used existed source. As a preliminary study, we only used a simple example with individual journals as the diffusion units. A sample from a highly interdisciplinary journal, Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, is used to illustrate this procedure. This study examines the determinants of citation success among authors who have recently published their work in economic history journals. Besides offering clues about how to improve one's scientific impact, our citation analysis also sheds light on the state of the field of economic history. Consistent with our expectations, we find that full professors, authors appointed at economics and history departments, and authors working in Anglo-Saxon and German countries are more likely to receive citations than other scholars. Long and co-authored articles are also a factor for citation success. We find similar patterns when assessing the same authors' citation success in economics journals. As a novel feature, we demonstrate that the diffusion of research - publication of working papers, as well as conference and workshop presentations - has a first-order positive impact on the citation rate. Bibliometric constructions of "knowledge maps" and "cognitive structures of science" do not differentiate between impact and influence factors. The difference can be constructed according to different meaning and interpretation of the terms reference and citation. Reference is "acknowledgment which one author gives to another", whereas citation is "acknowledgment which one document receives from another". Development of Information Science according to period and subject area is analyzed on the corpus of citation literature retrieved from doctoral dissertations in Information Science from 1978 to 2007 at Croatian universities. The research aim is to indicate the difference between document impact factor and author's influence factor (i.e. reference ability to produce effects on actions, behavior, and opinions of authors of doctoral theses). The influence factor serves to distinguish the key role of cited authors in time and according to the duration of the influence (the average age for cited papers of dominant authors in different periods is between eight and ten years). The difference between linear and interactive communication seems vital for the interpretation of cited half-life, i.e. the attitude of one science community towards used information resources and cognitive heritage. The analyzed corpus of 22,210 citations can be divided into three communication phases according to influence factor criteria: in the phase of dialogue and interactive communication 25% of bibliographic units are cited in the first four years; in the second phase another 25% of units are cited from the fifth to the ninth year; after ten years, in the dominant linear communication phase, approximately 30% of units are cited. The article reports that Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) is calculated, which is an alternative to using journal impact factor in order to identify influential papers. RCR could provide valuable supplemental informationeither to decision makers at funding agencies or to others who generally seek to understand relative outcomes of different groups of researchinvestments.

An analysis of 5317 articles and reviews published in 46 Indian science journals indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) during 2006 indicated that these journals predominantly published domestic papers. About 40 percent of the papers published in these journals were cited in the international literature during January 2006-June 2009. The proportion of cited papers and the rate of citation varied for domestic, foreign and collaborative papers, as well as among disciplines and publishers. The analysis indicated that collaborative papers had the highest rate of citation per paper. The Indian Journal of Medical Research published by Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi had the highest citation impact.
