The goal of this chapter is to help authors recognize and avoid a set of pitfalls that recur in many rejected information visualization papers, using a chronological model of the research process. Selecting a target paper type in the initial stage can avert an inappropriate choice of validation methods. Pitfalls involving the design of a visual encoding may occur during the middle stages of a project. In a later stage when the bulk of the research is finished and the paper writeup begins, the possible pitfalls are strategic choices for the content and structure of the paper as a whole, tactical problems localized to specific sections, and unconvincing ways to present the results. Final-stage pitfalls of writing style can be checked after a full paper draft exists, and the last set of problems pertain to submission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the use of computers, paper questionnaires are being replaced by electronic questionnaires. The formats of traditional paper questionnaires have been found to affect a subject΄s rating. Consequently, the transition from paper to electronic format can subtly change results. The research presented begins to determine how electronic questionnaire formats change subjective ratings. For formats where subjects used a flow chart to arrive at their rating, starting at the worst and middle ratings of the flow charts were the most accurate but subjects took slightly more time to arrive at their answers. Except for the electronic paper format, starting at the worst rating was the most preferred. The paper and electronic paper versions had the worst accuracy. Therefore, for flowchart type of questionnaires, flowcharts should start at the worst rating and work their way up to better ratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This chapter describes a study on the haptic discrimination of different types of plain paper. The experiment is designed to replicate features of a `banknote΄ scenario in which it may be possible to identify a counterfeit on the basis of only a few seconds contact. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques are used to investigate the perceptual dimensions involved in the discrimination task. Recently, collaborative tagging has become more and more popular in the Web2.0 community, since tags in these Web2.0 systems reflect the specific content features of the resources. This paper presents a recommender for scientific literatures based on semantic concept similarity computed from the collaborative tags. User profiles and item profiles are presented by these semantic concepts, and neighbor users are selected using collaborative filtering. Then, content-based filtering approach is used to generate recommendation list from the papers these neighbor users tagged. In this paper we present a method for optical paper surface roughness measurement, which overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional methods. Airflow-based roughness measurement methods and profilometer require expensive special equipment, essential laboratory conditions, are contact-based and slow and unsuitable for on-line control purposes methods. We employed an optical microscope with a built-in CCD-camera to take images of paper surface. The obtained image is considered as a texture. We applied statistical brightness measures and fractal dimension analysis for texture analysis. We have found a strong correlation between the roughness and a fractal dimension. This paper is concerned with data mining techniques for identifying the main parameters of the printing press, the printing process and paper affecting the occurrence of paper web breaks in a pressroom. Two approaches are explored. The first one treats the problem as a task of data classification into ˵break″ and ˵non break″ classes. The procedures of classifier design and selection of relevant input variables are integrated into one process based on genetic search. The search process results in a set of input variables providing the lowest average loss incurred in taking decisions. The second approach, also based on genetic search, combines procedures of input variable selection and data mapping into a low dimensional space. The tests have shown that the web tension parameters are amongst the most important ones. It was also found that, provided the basic off-line paper parameters are in an acceptable range, the paper related parameters recorded online contain more information for predicting the occurrence of web breaks than the off-line ones. Using the selected set of parameters, on average, 93.7% of the test set data were classified correctly. The average classification accuracy of the break cases was equal to 76.7%. This paper proposes an approach to support a wrapping process from an object and a piece of wrapping papers by the computer animation method. The combinational information about an object and a piece of wrapping papers generates possibly multiple feasible wrapping processes. Therefore, we first argue the state of paper wrapping which represents each stage in the wrapping process, and then assume that sequences of ordered states, called state space, construct the wrapping process successively. Second, the folding operations called wrap-folding are defined. These operations generate multiple wrapping processes on a state space which are physically feasible. Third, an algorithm of searching effective wrapping processes which satisfy demand of user is described. Finally, we give some experimental results to make the practical efficacy of proposed method clear. With the processing flow, we describe a computer assisted paper wrapping proto-type system. Document triage is the critical point in the information seeking process when the user first decides the relevance of a document to their information need. This complex process is not yet well understood, and subsequently we have undertaken a comparison of this task in both electronic and paper media. The results reveal that in each medium human judgement is influenced by different factors, and confirm some unproven hypotheses. Wikis and tools like Apache Subversion are wide-spread and used in various application areas. This paper presents a concept based on DokuWiki and Apache Subversion (SVN) to create and manage software-related seminar papers. While DokuWiki presents the content of the seminar paper, SVN manages referenced source code from the DokuWiki pages. The paper presents also experiences on applying this concept to a student seminar. It concludes the advantages and drawbacks of this concept in practice, based on student and advisor evaluations. While reading documents, people commonly make annotations: they underline or highlight text and write comments in the margin. Making annotations during reading activities has been shown to be an efficient method for aiding understanding and interpretation. In this paper we present a comparison of paper-based and online annotations in the workplace. Online annotations were collected in a laboratory study, making use of the Web-based annotation tool SpreadCrumbs. A field study was out to gather paper-based annotations. The results validate the benefits of Web annotations. A comparison of the online annotations with paper-based annotations provides several insights in user needs for enhanced online annotation tools, from which design guidelines can be drawn. Both Content analysis and link analysis have its advantages in measuring relationships among documents. In this paper, we propose a new method to combine these two methods to compute the similarity of research papers so that we can do clustering of these papers more accurately. In order to improve the efficiency of similarity calculation, we develop a strategy to deal with the relationship graph separately without affecting the accuracy. We also design an approach to assign different weights to different links to the papers, which can enhance the accuracy of similarity calculation. When performing quality inspection of recycled paper one phenomenon of concern is the appearance of macroscopic undulations on the paper sheet surface that may emerge shortly or some time after its production. In this paper we explore the detection and measurement of this defect by means of computer vision and statistical pattern recognition techniques that may allow early detection at the production site. We propose features computed from Gabor Filter Banks (GFB) and Discrete Wavelet Transforms (DWT) for the characterization of paper sheet surface bumpiness in recycled paper images. The lack of a precise definition of the defect and the great variability of the sheet deformation shapes and scales, both within each image and between images, introduce additional difficulties to the problem. We obtain, with both proposed modeling approaches (GFB and DWT), classification accuracies are comparable to the agreement between human observers.
