An Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) is an effective and robust, but resource-intensive, means of evaluating anatomical knowledge. Since most OSPEs employ short answer or fill-in-the-blank style questions, the format requires many people familiar with the content to mark the examinations. However, the increasing prevalence of online delivery for anatomy and physiology courses could result in students losing the OSPE practice that they would receive in face-to-face learning sessions. The purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of Decision Trees (DTs) in marking OSPE questions as a first step to creating an intelligent, online OSPE tutoring system. The study used the results of the winter 2020 semester final OSPE from McMaster University's anatomy and physiology course in the Faculty of Health Sciences (HTHSCI 2FF3/2LL3/1D06) as the data set. Ninety percent of the data set was used in a 10-fold validation algorithm to train a DT for each of the 54 questions. Each DT was comprised of unique words that appeared in correct, student-written answers. The remaining 10% of the data set was marked by the generated DTs. When the answers marked by the DT were compared to the answers marked by staff and faculty, the DT achieved an average accuracy of 94.49% across all 54 questions. This suggests that machine learning algorithms such as DTs are a highly effective option for OSPE grading and are suitable for the development of an intelligent, online OSPE tutoring system., (© 2023 The Authors. Introduction: There are no validated decision-making algorithms concerning severe asthma (SA) management. Future risks are crucial factors and can be derived from SA trajectories., Areas Covered: The future severe asthma-decision trees should revisit current knowledge and gaps. A focused literature search has been conducted., Expert Opinion: Asthma severity is currently defined a priori , thereby precluding a role for early interventions aiming to prevent outcomes such as exacerbations (systemic corticosteroids exposure) and lung function decline. Asthma 'at-risk' might represent the ultimate paradigm but merits longitudinal studies considering modern interventions. Real exacerbations, severe airway hyperresponsiveness, excessive T2-related biomarkers, noxious environments and patient behaviors, harms of OCS and high-doses inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), and low adherence-to-effectiveness ratios of ICS-containing inhalers are predictors of future risks. New tools such as imaging, genetic, and epigenetic signatures should be used. Logical and numerical artificial intelligence may be used to generate a consistent risk score. A pragmatic definition of response to treatments will allow development of a validated and applicable algorithm. Biologics have the best potential to minimize the risks, but cost remains an issue. We propose a simplified six-step algorithm for decision-making that is ultimately aiming to achieve asthma remission.

Pyrolysis is an efficient thermochemical conversion process, but accurate prediction of yield and properties of biochar presents a significant challenge. Three prominent ensemble learning methods, viz. Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) were utilized to develop models to predict yield and higher heating value (HHV) of biochar. Dataset comprising 423 observations from 44 different biomasses was curated from peer-reviewed journals for predicting biochar yield. RF regressor achieved a test R2 of 0.86 for biochar yield, while XGB regressor achieved a test R2 of 0.87 for biochar HHV prediction. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was conducted to assess influence of each feature on the model's output. Pyrolysis temperature and ash content of biomass were identified as the most influential features for the prediction of both yield and HHV of biochar. Animal psychophysics can generate rich behavioral datasets, often comprised of many 1000s of trials for an individual subject. Gradient-boosted models are a promising machine learning approach for analyzing such data, partly due to the tools that allow users to gain insight into how the model makes predictions. We trained ferrets to report a target word's presence, timing, and lateralization within a stream of consecutively presented non-target words. To assess the animals' ability to generalize across pitch, we manipulated the fundamental frequency (F0) of the speech stimuli across trials, and to assess the contribution of pitch to streaming, we roved the F0 from word token to token. We then implemented gradient-boosted regression and decision trees on the trial outcome and reaction time data to understand the behavioral factors behind the ferrets' decision-making. We visualized model contributions by implementing SHAPs feature importance and partial dependency plots. While ferrets could accurately perform the task across all pitch-shifted conditions, our models reveal subtle effects of shifting F0 on performance, with within-trial pitch shifting elevating false alarms and extending reaction times. Our models identified a subset of non-target words that animals commonly false alarmed to. Follow-up analysis demonstrated that the spectrotemporal similarity of target and non-target words rather than similarity in duration or amplitude waveform was the strongest predictor of the likelihood of false alarming. This study investigates how 11- to 12-year-old students construct data-based decision trees using data cards for classification purposes. We examine the students' heuristics and reasoning during this process. The research is based on an eight-week teaching unit during which students labeled data, built decision trees, and assessed them using test data. They learned to manually construct decision trees to classify food items as recommendable or not. They utilized data cards with a heuristic that is a simplified form of a machine learning algorithm. We report on evidence that this topic is teachable to middle school students, along with insights for refining our teaching approach and broader implications for teaching machine learning at the school level.

In this paper, we consider classes of decision tables with many-valued decisions closed under operations of the removal of columns, the changing of decisions, the permutation of columns, and the duplication of columns. We study relationships among three parameters of these tables: the complexity of a decision table (if we consider the depth of the decision trees, then the complexity of a decision table is the number of columns in it), the minimum complexity of a deterministic decision tree, and the minimum complexity of a nondeterministic decision tree. According to the European Directive 2007/60/CE, flood risk evaluation should include a cost–benefit analysis (CBA) on a long-term time horizon to evaluate the impact of mitigation measures. The standard CBA assumes to know in advance the events observed in the time horizon and a priori compares all mitigation measures by an economic metric. No change is supposed to be made to these measures throughout the time horizon. This modus operandi is not appropriate in the domain of flood risk management because several conditions are uncertain when the CBA is made (e.g., urban policies). This article faces these challenges by the integration of cost–benefit analysis and decision trees, to prescribe mitigation measures under uncertainty on the budget for mitigation actions because their funding can be modified after the conclusion of the CBA. The former integration is discussed in the real case of the lowland valley of the Coghinas River (Sardinia, Italy), for which the classical CBA compared five mitigation measures of infrastructural works. The integration into the decision tree also allows evaluation of mitigation measures with changes in infrastructural works and a lamination action. The outcomes advise decreasing the maximum storage level and increase the peak lamination. Inconsistencies between performance data from laboratory‐prepared and field samples have been widely reported. These inconsistencies often result in inaccurate condition prediction, which leads to inefficient maintenance planning. Traditional pavement management systems (PMS) do not have the appropriate means (e.g., mechanistic solutions, extensive data handling facilities, etc.) to consider these data inconsistencies. With the growing demand for sustainable materials, there is a need for more self‐learning systems that could quickly transfer laboratory‐based information to field‐based information inside the PMS. The article aims to present a future‐ready machine learning‐based framework for analyzing the differences between laboratory and field‐prepared samples. Developed on the basis of data obtained from field and laboratory data, the gradient‐boosting decision trees‐based framework was able to establish a good relationship between laboratory performance and field performance (R2test > 80 for all models). Ozone pollution in chemical industrial parks is severe and complicated and is significantly influenced by pollutant emissions and meteorological parameters. In this study, we innovatively investigated the formation rules of ozone by using observation-based analyses and a gradient-boosting decision tree (GBDT) model, focusing on a typical chemical industrial park located in the Yangtze River Delta of China. The results revealed that ozone concentration was positively correlated with temperature while negatively correlated with NO2 concentration and relative humidity (RH). Ozone pollution was predominantly observed from April to October (M4–10). The optimized GBDT model was subsequently utilized to establish a specific and quantifiable relationship between each single dominant impact factor (RH, NO2, temperature, and PM2.5) and ozone within a complex and uncertain multi-factor context during M4–10. Detailed discussions were conducted on the reaction rate of ozone-related to different levels of RH and temperature. The accumulation of ozone was favored by high temperature and low RH, with the maximum ozone concentration observed at the RH of 50% and the temperature of 35 °C. The NO2-O3 change curve exhibited distinct phases, including a period of stability, gradual increase, rapid increase, and equilibrium. During the second and third periods, the ratio of ozone production to NO2 consumption was 0.10 and 2.73, respectively. Furthermore, there was a non-monotonic relationship between variations in ozone concentration and PM2.5 concentration. Hence, it is imperative to implement fine control strategies in the park, such as adopting seasonal production strategies, implementing targeted measures for controlling NOx and active VOCs, and employing special control methods during periods of high temperature. Abstract At present, data obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS) is significantly valuable in mobility research. However, GPS‐based data lacks include trip purpose information. Consequently, many researchers have endeavoured to predict or impute these missing attributes. Existing studies have focused on constructing more features to improve prediction accuracy, but paid less attention to the model's applicability and transferability. In this study, five trip purposes are extracted, including education, recreation, personal, shopping, and transportation, from Chengdu Household Travel Survey (HTS) data. The individual and trip characteristics that are common and can be easily derived from GPS data are carefully selected and extracted. Point of Interest (POI) data of the trip destination are also collected to enhance input characteristics. To obtain more accurate results, an ensemble learning model, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT), is employed to predict trip purposes. grid search and cross‐validation techniques are used to optimize the hyper‐parameters. Empirical results show that the proposed model achieves 0.788 accuracy, which is 22.17%, 14.53%, 10.36%, and 6.77% higher than Multinominal Logit (MNL), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Deep Belief Network (DBN), respectively. It is also found that although increasing trip features improve the model's accuracy, it simultaneously impairs model's transferability and generalizability.

This paper considers the tasks of detecting and recognizing bearing faults in electric motors from the signals collected from supply currents, using machine learning techniques. In particular, following recent trends in AI, the main point of interest was focused towards interpretable solutions that provide explanations on the decisions taken by the classifiers. For this reason, decision trees were chosen, since they represent a classic machine learning approach which inductively learns tree structures from a collection of observations. Paths along the learnt trees can be easily interpreted as plain classification rules. An extensive experimental comparison shows the strong generalization capabilities of such a classifier. In particular, the present work reports results obtained in a highly challenging scenario, usually overlooked in the literature, where the system is tested on configurations of radial and torsional loads that have not been observed during training. The approach achieves over 90% of accuracy even on this cross-load generalization setting.

As the field of zero energy building design and research continues to progress, the use of data analysis methods is on the rise. These methods are applied to create assessment criteria, compare performance, and aid in design decision making. Decision trees, as a data-driven approach, offer interpretability and predictability, assisting designers in summarizing their design experience and serving as a foundation for design references. However, the current application of decision tree methods in the zero energy house sector primarily focuses on HVAC systems, lacking a comprehensive exploration from an architectural design perspective. Therefore, this study presents an empirical method for building and applying models based on decision trees, using zero energy house cases in severely cold regions of China as samples. Through an analysis of the interactions among various passive design parameters and the use of EnergyPlus for performance simulations, a decision tree model is established. This model aids in determining the recommended combinations of passive design parameters that meet the criteria of low energy consumption. Moreover, feature weighting highlights the most influential passive design parameters on building energy consumption, including the length of the architectural gestalt plane, the roof shape, and the ground thermal resistance. Federated learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning technique that enables multiple decentralized clients to develop a model collaboratively without exchanging their local data. Heightened privacy risks and the recent strict privacy laws make it even more precarious for the gathering and integration of data in a centralized location for full utilization. Federated learning is compatible with established privacy laws like General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and China’s Cybersecurity Law. Further, there are very few scenarios where centralized, properly labeled, and complete data are available. Federated learning provides a way to solve this problem. As a result, much research has been conducted in several areas within the emerging field of FL. This review paper focuses on decision tree-based FL systems due to their desirable properties of interpretability, parallelism, and high performance. We take a closer look at the motivations, design considerations, tree building algorithms, and security mechanisms used for these systems. We also present the various datasets used in these systems, demonstrated application areas, and the evidence of their benefits. The objective of this paper is to provide an informative overview about the characteristics of FL, privacy and security mechanisms used in them, available open source development frameworks for FL, and the decision tree-based systems developed in FL for researchers in academia and system architects in the industry.

The use of decision trees and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in health-care research is widespread, as they enable health-care providers with the tools they need to make better medical decisions with their patients. ANNs specifically are extremely helpful in predictive research as they can provide investigators with knowledge about future trends and patterns. However, a major downside to ANNs is their lack of interpretability. Understandability of the model is important as it ensures the outcomes are true to the dataset’s original labels and are not impacted by algorithmic bias. In comparison, decision trees map out their entire process before providing the results, which leads to a higher level of trust in the model and the conclusions it supplies the investigators with. This is essential as many historical datasets lack equal and fair representation of all races and sexes, which might directly correlate to a lesser treatment given to females and individuals in minority groups. Here, we review existing work around the differences and connections between ANNs and decision trees with implications for research in health care.

Rolling bearings are a common machine element found in rotary machines. The components in the rolling bearing such as the inner race, outer race, rolling element, and cage are the parts that are often damaged. Traditionally spectrum analysis is used to diagnose bearing defects. However, spectrum analysis is not effectively applied to bearings with early defects because the vibration signal generated is dominated by frequency components from other machine elements, so the frequency of bearing defects cannot be observed. This study proposes an alternative method of detecting bearing defects based on vibration signals using machine learning with a decision tree algorithm. This method is more effective than the spectrum analysis method because machine learning is based on feature extraction and pattern recognition of vibration signal data, therefore, providing classification results directly without further analysis. Vibration signals were recorded using an accelerometer mounted on a bearing housing on a test rig. Nine-time domain statistical parameters and six frequency domain statistical parameters were extracted from the vibration signal and then used as input for decision trees. The results show that the decision trees algorithm gives an accuracy of 94.4% for classifying three rolling bearing conditions using the input of 6 selected frequency domain statistical parameters.

Background: Trauma registries collect and document data about the acute injury care in hospitals. The goal of trauma care systems is to reduce injury occurrence and enhance trauma patient survival rates. Objectives: In this article, the Kashan trauma registry was used to predict trauma patient discharge status using machine learning. Methods: This study employed 3930 Kashan Trauma Centre Registry entries after preprocessing. The study experimented with decision trees of varying complexity, using three separate metrics - information gain, Gini index, and gain ratio - to build and evaluate the trees. Finally, bagging, boosting and stacking ensemble learning techniques were implemented to evaluate their predictive performance. Ensemble learning models were developed based on decision trees of varying depths that utilized different learning measures/metrics. The predictive performance of the algorithms was evaluated using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). This study aimed to compare ensemble-learning techniques like bagging, boosting and stacking to decision trees configured with various parameter settings, to assess their ability to predict trauma patients' discharge status outcomes. Results: The stacking technique, which used decision tree algorithms (depth=5) that integrated parameters like information gain, gain ratio and Gini index at the base level along with KNN (k=12) using Euclidean distance, and then incorporated logistic regression as the meta-classifier, demonstrated superior predictive performance compared to using individual decision trees, bagging or boosting approaches alone. Conclusion: However, while decision trees are straightforward algorithms and ensemble methods are more time-consuming and computationally complex, this study indicates that stacking learning is superior to single decision tree methods with a variety of parameters, bagging, and boosting.

The research entails an evaluation of the efficacy of employing decision trees to augment students’ analytical capacities, encompassing the determination of self-efficacy levels and cognitive loads among students. The sample included 160 students divided into two groups. The present research collected the data using a questionnaire to analyse self-efficacy and cognitive load among students: the research revealed no significant differences in self-efficacy between the two groups of participants (F = 0.01, p > 0.05). The mean cognitive workload and cognitive effort values in the experimental group are 3.01 and 3.46 respectively, while in the control group, they are 2.94 and 3.42. These findings indicate that students in the experimental group exhibit slightly higher levels of the measured indicators compared to the control group; however, these differences are not statistically significant. The practical significance of this work lies in the absence of detected differences between the groups, which may indicate that both methods could be equivalent in terms of enhancing students’ analytical skills. The study conducts exhaustive field surveys in 67 wards in Bhubaneswar city, Odisha. 29 factors under 10 aspects have been considered for the study to assess the water requirement per household per day. SEM and CART modeling have been used to estimate the water requirement. The SEM model predicts that 4 aspects, namely, expenses, governance, possession, and resources are the major aspects that decide the water requirement of a household. Similarly, construction and repair costs, energy consumption, reinforcement practices, awareness, presence of a garden, presence of washing machine, presence of other appliances, water charges, and the type of storage majorly affect the water requirement. CART predicts energy consumption, storage, construction and repair, and washing machines to be important estimators with MAPE < 1% for the prediction of water requirement. The study reveals that with proper governance and proper use of water-intensive appliances, the required quantity of water can be decreased in any household. Secondly, by abiding by certain rules while using washing machines, like using them daily or weekly two times, etc., the inequity of water among households can be reduced.
