We investigate two research questions using a recent statewide transition from paper to computer-based testing: first, the extent to which test mode effects found in prior studies can be eliminated; and second, the degree to which online and paper assessments offer different information about underlying student ability. We first find very small mode effects for a more recent transition in Massachusetts. Second, we investigate the predictive evidence of validity for paper and online tests for predictions of future test scores and grades. We generally find minimal differences for the extent to which scores on paper tests can differentially predict future online versus paper test scores. Paper to Plastics (P2P) is an interdisciplinary program that combines chemistry and biology in a research setting. The goal of this project is 2-fold: to engage students in scientific research and to educate them about sustainability and biodegradable materials. The scientific aim of the project is to recycle unwanted office paper to the useful biodegradable polymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Through this program, students learn firsthand how chemistry and biology interact to form useful materials from waste. Students combine biological techniques, such as enzymatic digestion and fermentation, with chemical techniques, such as distillation and catalysis, to accomplish the conversion of waste paper into PLA. Through this summer program, students ultimately become familiar with diverse laboratory techniques, while learning how their scientific interests can be used to address important social problems.

Research on problem solving typically does not address tasks that involve following detailed and/or illustrated step-by-step instructions. Such tasks are not seen as cognitively challenging problems to be solved. In this paper, we challenge this assumption by analyzing verbal protocols collected during an Origami folding task. Participants verbalised thoughts well beyond reading or reformulating task instructions, or commenting on actions. In particular, they compared the task status to pictures in the instruction, evaluated the progress so far, referred to previous experience, expressed problems and confusions, and--crucially--added complex thoughts and ideas about the current instructional step. The last two categories highlight the fact that participants conceptualised this spatial task as a problem to be solved, and used creativity to achieve this aim. Procedurally, the verbalisations reflect a typical order of steps: "reading"--"reformulating"--"reconceptualising"--"evaluating." During reconceptualisation, the creative range of spatial concepts represented in language highlights the complex mental operations involved when transferring the two-dimensional representation into the real world. We discuss the implications of our findings in terms of problem solving as a multilayered process involving diverse types of cognitive effort, consider parallels to known conceptual challenges involved in interpreting spatial descriptions, and reflect on the benefit of reconceptualisation for cognitive processes.

Calls from policymakers to assimilate immigrants through English literacy have grown urgent. Yet the 2007 U.S. Census has reported that one in five U.S. residents speaks a language other than English at home. What's more, new immigrants often settle in long-standing immigrant communities in which these non-English languages are the lingua franca. These demographic trends call for a reconceptualization of the problematic relationship of literacy to immigrant assimilation. To whom, precisely, are immigrants assimilating, especially in multi-ethnic communities? And how exactly does literacy, especially biliteracy, shape this process? Through an ethnographic investigation of how two different immigrant groups form biliterate partnerships in the quest for legal immigration papers, this essay examines how literacy and assimilation function in light of the changing writing demands of contemporary immigrant life. This paper presents student projects analyzing or using blockchain technologies, created by students enrolled in courses dedicated to teaching blockchain, at two different universities during the 2018- 2019 academic year. Students explored perceptions related to storing private healthcare information on a blockchain, managing the security of Internet of Things devices, maintaining public governmental records, and creating smart contracts. The course designs, which were centered around project-based learning, include self-regulated learning and peer feedback as ways to improve student learning. Students either wrote a research paper or worked in teams on a programming project to build and deploy a blockchain-based application using Solidity, a programming language for writing smart contracts on various blockchain platforms. For select student papers, this case study describes research methods and outcomes and how students worked together or made use of peer feedback to improve upon drafts of research questions and abstracts. For a development project in Solidity, this study presents the issues at hand along with interview results that guided the implementation. Teams shared lessons learned with other teams through a weekly status report to the whole class. While available support for the Solidity teams was not ideal, students learned to use available online resources for creating and testing smart contracts. Our findings suggest that a project-based learning approach is an effective way for students to expand and develop their knowledge of emerging technologies, like blockchain, and apply it in a variety of industries.

The article explores the life of students at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts during the 1895-1915 period. Dean Christopher C. Langdell instituted an academic ideology and structure that proliferated throughout the legal and professional education. He faced strong criticisms from students, alumni and faculty until his retirement in 1895. James B. Ames implemented reforms that Langdell introduced during 1870 to 1886. The Paper Chase emerged under Dean Ezra R. Thayer.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used as a color developer in thermal paper. Thermal paper is ubiquitous in daily life due to its use in cash register receipts, so opportunities for human contact abound. For this study, 10 blank cash register receipts were obtained from businesses in suburban Boston. BPA was extracted and analysis of concentration was performed using gas chromatograph/flame ionization detector. In some receipts, BPA was not detected but in others it was as high as 19 mg for a 12-inch long receipt, which is in line with concentrations indicated in patents. This study is intended to highlight the potential for human exposure to BPA as well as the ease with which exposure may be reduced through the use of BPA-free thermal paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building extraction aims to extract building pixels from remote sensing imagery, which plays a significant role in urban planning, dynamic urban monitoring, and many other applications. UNet3+ is widely applied in building extraction from remote sensing images. However, it still faces issues such as low segmentation accuracy, imprecise boundary delineation, and the complexity of network models. Therefore, based on the UNet3+ model, this paper proposes a 3D Joint Attention (3DJA) module that effectively enhances the correlation between local and global features, obtaining more accurate object semantic information and enhancing feature representation. The 3DJA module models semantic interdependence in the vertical and horizontal dimensions to obtain feature map spatial encoding information, as well as in the channel dimensions to increase the correlation between dependent channel graphs. In addition, a bottleneck module is constructed to reduce the number of network parameters and improve model training efficiency. Many experiments are conducted on publicly accessible WHU,INRIA and Massachusetts building dataset, and the benchmarks, BOMSC-Net, CVNet, SCA-Net, SPCL-Net, ACMFNet, MFCF-Net models are selected for comparison with the 3DJA-UNet3+ model proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that 3DJA-UNet3+ achieves competitive results in three evaluation indicators: overall accuracy, mean intersection over union, and F1-score. The article reports that immunologist Luk van Parijs was fired from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school alleged that he had confessed to faking data in one published paper, several unpublished manuscripts and grant applications. Van Parijs's academic future may be shot to pieces. But his scientific past, so far is intact. He has contributed to roughly 40 papers stretching back to 1994, many of them in the blossoming field of RNA interference. None has been publicly labeled fraudulent or retracted. MIT has not said which paper it found to be problematic. Other investigations are continuing. One of the biggest problems in these fraud things says Kathleen Case, publisher at the American Association for Cancer Research in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is that the investigations get finished. And the last thing people think of is the journals. Large-scale fraud cases are rare. But scientists whose work is challenged have often co-authored dozens or even hundreds of papers.

Nuclear-encoded mitochondrial ribosomal proteins (MRPs) are crucial for mitochondrial function and hence cellular energy production. A new paper in Development investigates the function of MRPs in early mouse development, thanks to a battery of knockout mutants. Transpiration is generally assumed to be insignificant at night when stomata close in response to the lack of photosynthetically active radiation. However, there is increasing evidence that the stomata of some species remain open at night, which would allow for nighttime transpiration if there were a sufficient environmental driving force. We examined nighttime water use in co-occurring species in a mixed deciduous stand at Harvard Forest, MA, using whole-tree and leaf-level measurements. Diurnal whole-tree water use was monitored continuously with Granier-style sap flux sensors in paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), red oak (Quercus rubra L.) and red maple (Acer rubrum L.). An analysis was conducted in which nighttime water flux could be partitioned between refilling of internal water stores and transpiration. Substantial nighttime sap flux was observed in all species and much of this flux was attributed to the refilling of depleted water stores. However, in paper birch, nighttime sap flux frequently exceeded recharge estimates. Over 10% of the total daily sap flux during the growing season was due to transpiration at night in paper birch. Nighttime sap flux was over 8% of the total daily flux in red oak and 2% in red maple; however, this flux was mainly associated with recharge. On nights with elevated vapor pressure deficit, sap flux continued through the night in paper birch, whereas it reached zero during the night in red oak and red maple. Measurements of leaf-level gas exchange on a night with elevated vapor pressure deficit showed stomatal conductance dropping by only 25% in paper birch, while approaching zero in red oak and red maple. The study highlighted differences in ecophysiological controls on sap flux exerted by co-occurring species. Paper birch is a fast-growing, shade-intolerant species with an earlier successional status than red oak and red maple. Risking water loss through nighttime transpiration may provide paper birch with an ecological advantage by enabling the species to maximize photosynthesis and support rapid growth. Nighttime transpiration may also be a mechanism for delivering oxygen to respiring cells in the deep sapwood of paper birch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Actinomycetes-a group of antimicrobial producing bacteria-have been successfully cultured and characterized from the nest material of diverse arthropods. Some are symbionts that produce antimicrobial chemicals found to protect nest brood and resources from pathogenic microbes. Others have no known fitness relationship with their associated insects, but have been found to produce antimicrobials in vitro. Consequently, insect nest material is being investigated as a new source of novel antimicrobial producing actinomycetes, which could be harnessed for therapeutic potential. To extend studies of actinomycete-insect associations beyond soil-substrate dwelling insects and wood boring excavators, we conducted a preliminary assessment of the actinomycetes within the nests of the paper wasp, Polistes dominulus (Christ). We found that actinomycetes were readily cultured from nest material across multiple invasive P. dominulus populations-including members of the genera Streptomyces, Micromonospora, and Actinoplanes. Thirty of these isolates were assayed for antimicrobial activity against the challenge bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, and Bacillus subtilis. Sixty percent of isolates inhibited the growth of at least one challenge strain. This study provides the first assessment of bacteria associated with nests of P. dominulus, and the first record of antimicrobial producing actinomycetes isolated from social wasps. We provide a new system to explore nest associated actinomycetes from a ubiquitous and cosmopolitan group of insects.

Polistes wasps engage in many behavioral interactions. Although there has been debate over the meaning of these interactions, these stereotypical behaviors can be used to determine a colony's linear dominance hierarchy. Due to the implicit relationship between behavioral and reproductive dominance, behavioral interactions are commonly used to distinguish the reproductively dominant alpha foundress from the beta foundress. It has been suggested that in order to maintain reproductive control, the alpha foundress is forced to remain at a physiologically constrained activity limit. This, in turn, may allow aggressive interactions to be used as determinants influencing reproductive partitioning between cooperating individuals. Energetic costs can place important limitations on behavior, but the energetic cost of the interactions has not previously been measured. To address this, we measured the CO(2) production of 19 non-nestmate pairs displaying interactive and noninteractive behavior. The rate of energy used during interaction behavior was positively associated with published rankings of aggression. However, our results indicate that interactions are not very energetically costly in Polistes, particularly when compared to the likely cost of foraging. These data suggest that maintaining reproductive dominance is not very energetically expensive for the dominant and that the dominant foundress expends energy at a lower rate than the subordinate foundress.

Today the water tumbles over a ledge, fully a mile in length, and into a very narrow chasm 350 ft. deep.

This article offers for inspection the proposition that the adversarial evidence-based litigation process is unsuitable for resolving custody cases in general and relocation cases in particular. It analyzes the leading cases from New York, Massachusetts, California, England, Canada, and Australia. It reaches a conclusion that no jurisdiction has devised a legal standard or formula that enables a judge to predict the future best interest of a child if that child is allowed to relocate with one parent away from the other. For this reason, the court has a duty to offer as sophisticated and friendly a settlement process and atmosphere as possible. However, knowing that judges will still be required to resolve these difficult cases because they often seem impervious to settlement, the article offers thirty-six factors that a court should consider in all move-away cases. By relying on each of these factors that is relevant to the case, the parents will have an understanding of why the decision was made the way it was and it will also allow for effective appellate review. The article reports on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and its development of a membrane which can absorb oil. The membrane is made of nanowires which can absorb hydrophobic liquids including oil from water. It can be used in cleaning up oil spills and other water pollutants. Francesco Stellaci who is leading the development comments that the material can remain dry after being left on water for a month. The oil that is absorbed by the membrane can be recovered through heating and evaporation since the nanowires are made of potassium manganese. The membrane is created with a technique similar to paper production.

In this introduction to the second part of the special issue on alternative economies published in Organization in 2017, I first briefly chart key fora where the debate has continued in the last two years, and then present the three additional contributions included here. Moving the conversation forward, I argue that, in order to evaluate the prefigurative potential of alternative organizations, we need to address more thoroughly the relation between alternatives and their outside. A productive place to ground this reflection is in the debate between post-capitalism and anti-capitalism. The main lines of this debate are reconstructed based on the keynote speeches delivered by Jodi Dean and Stephen Healy at the last Rethinking Marxism conference held in Amherst, Massachusetts, in September 2013. I conclude by claiming that post-capitalist immanence should be articulated with an anti-capitalist communist horizon, and advance the Open Marxist notion of de-mediation of social relations as key to do this. Although capitalist institutions (e.g. the market, the state) mediate all social relations, mediation is never definitive, as it always contains the possibility for its own negation, de-mediation. So conceived, de-mediation redefines our understanding of class struggle beyond the capital-labor relation in the workplace, into society as a whole, broadening the ethical and political scope of the organizational research agenda on alternatives to capitalism. Teacher quality, however defined, is usually seen as the responsibility of schools of education. Rarely is it viewed as the responsibility of academic departments in the arts and sciences--that part of college or university where prospective teachers study the academic content they will draw on as teachers. Only recently has teacher quality come to be seen as a major responsibility of a state department of education and to be linked to student learning, traditionally the responsibility of the local school district. This essay sets forth the many ways in which a state department of education can enhance teacher quality and the supply of academically able teachers. I draw on my own experience in directing revisions of the major documents produced by the Massachusetts Department of Education from 1999 to 2003 and on several other major initiatives undertaken by the department to implement the education reform measures enacted and funded by the Massachusetts legislature in the 1990s. The chief documents that were the focus for my own work consisted of the preK-12 curriculum frameworks in all basic subjects, the regulations for licensing teachers and teacher-training programs, and the teacher tests required for licensure. The general goals of the department relating to teacher quality and supply have been to attract more high-achieving undergraduate majors, college graduates, and academically able midcareer changers to teaching as a career; to increase the academic qualifications of teachers completing approved training programs; and to increase the academic knowledge of the current teaching force. I first describe all the major ways in which the department sought to achieve these goals. I then report on the results of these initiatives based on available evidence, and I review what lessons the department has learned that may be useful for others. I conclude with a discussion of the possible effects of the accountability provisions of the No Child Left Behind legislation on state efforts to achieve these goals at a time of state and local budget constraints and with suggestions about ways to reconceptualize the institutional framework for teacher training in the United States. It discusses the establishment of a commodity standard in 1640 and the official prices of commodities in Massachusetts during the 1600s. The article details the development of the paper-money standard in 1690. It comments on the topics covered by most recent studies of the monetary system of the American colonies. The establishment of a mint in Boston in 1652 is reported. By 1737 the price of silver had risen. In 1750, the Massachusetts Assembly restored specie payments. The article also considers the objections to the continuation of paper-money issues.

In 2009, the U.S. Department of Education distributed $2,500,000 via a competitive grant program, the Technical Assistance for Student Assignment Plans, to 11 school districts. The grants and their local effects provide an opportunity to examine the new politics of diversity in public education. Participants cited a wide range of conceptions of diversity, most of which were race-neutral. Some districts enacted policies deemphasizing their original diversity goals. Even in Technical Assistance for Student Assignment Plans (TASAP) districts, whose leaders presumably value diversity, diversity was not always a compelling goal when competing with priorities such as fiscal austerity, school improvement, and neighborhood school demands. Future federal efforts to increase students' exposure to diverse peers should recognize that local conditions might create contrary political pressures for local policymakers.

The article discusses the digitization of the papers of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a popular and influential public figure who worked for women's equality, at Schlesinger Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The papers of Gilman include manuscripts, drawings and clippings that document her extensive output as a writer as well as her romantic and family life. It mentions that the digitization of Gilman's papers began in April 2009 until June 2010.

The article presents a study on the withdrawal resistance of J-lags from several species of hardwood trees. The researchers installed 19 J-lags in red oaks growing at the Urban Horticulture Center (UHC) in Blacksburg, Virginia, in July 2005. They found that lags offer significant withdrawal resistance in species with moderately dense wood in the absence of decay. They also suggested that decay associated with J-lag installation is minimal after four years for sugar maple and paper birch growing in Massachusetts.

Precise road segmentation is an essential part of many applications related to road information extraction from remote sensing data. The effect of color space on road detection has rarely been studied. In this paper, the effects of different color spaces of aerial images and multitask learning methods were experimented on road segmentation using three deep convolutional neural networks, UNet, DenseU-Net, and RoadVecNet. The color spaces included RGB, HSV, LAB, YCbCr, and YUV. The multitask learning methods adopted in this study involved utilizing multiple inputs, and multiple outputs. Multiple inputs were aerial images from the same area with different color spaces, and multiple outputs were road segmentation and road outline segmentation. As remote sensing data, National Land Survey of Finland's true orthophotos (from 2020), Massachusetts road imagery dataset, and Ottawa dataset were applied. Segmentation masks for National Land Survey of Finland's true orthophotos were extracted from Digiroad vectors with road width information. Road outline masks were generated from the segmentation masks. The studied neural networks were trained with the same data, learning rate, loss function, and optimizer for each color space, and pairs of color spaces. Multiple outputs were experimented with RGB color space. The comparative analysis assessed the performance of various neural networks across different color spaces using the F1-score metric. The experimental findings indicate that the choice of color space has little influence on the results of neural networks Deep learning methods can adapt to different color spaces well. Research exploring the impact of social class on family and school relationships indicates that families with high levels of socioeconomic status (SES) possess resources that enable participation in traditionally accepted forms of family engagement (Henderson and Mapp, in, A new wave of evidence: The impact of school, family, and community connections on student achievement, 2002; Lareau, in, Home advantage: Social class and parental involvement in elementary education, 2000; in, Unequal childhoods: The importance of social class in family life, 2003). Despite these capital based advantages there is a small, but growing number of affluent families seeking alternative forms of family engagement through participation in community based organizations (CBOs) (Winton and Evans in "Canadian J Edu Admin Policy" 156:1-30, 2014; Winton in "Canadian J Edu Admin Policy" 114:69-92, 2010). This article explores the experiences of affluent parents in one community-based organization in order to better understand their motivations and the benefits of participation. This study utilized a qualitative case study approach to examine the research questions. Drawing upon data from a larger multi-group case study (Evans in "J Family Diver Edu" 1:21-39, 2014), this article focuses on the experiences of families who participated in the Lexington, Massachusetts chapter of Stand for Children (SFC). Data sources include interviews with SFC members, observations of meetings and public events, and organization documents. The findings indicate that while affluent participants in SFC were actively involved in traditional forms of family engagement, their perceptions of individual power and efficacy were limited to the classroom or school level. Efforts to impact education beyond the micro-level required the acquisition of new skill sets and the expansion of social networks, which was facilitated through participation in SFC. Members reported that participation in SFC resulted in both the acquisition of technical advocacy skills and increased feelings of empowerment. This study challenges commonly held assumptions regarding the power of affluent families, discusses the appeal of CBOs to these same families, and raises the possibility of cross-class coalition building as a means to influence district, state, and national level reforms.

This paper introduces link information value obtained by the traffic sensors and presents a traffic sensor location and flow estimation joint optimization model in an urban road network. In contrast to most previous studies, this paper adds new traffic sensors into the existing sensor network and proposes a data-driven path flow measurement method based on Wasserstein metric, which is utilized to measure the distance between the estimated traffic flow distribution and the actual distribution. Furthermore, this paper develops a customized greedy algorithm by combining a search strategy for the link information value to obtain the optimal sensor location scheme and perform traffic flow estimation under different budget conditions. Numerical experiments are conducted on Sioux-Falls test network and Eastern Massachusetts interstate highway subnetwork to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model based on Wasserstein metric and the developed solution method. Computational results show that the sensor location scheme generated by the model based on Wasserstein metric can reduce the estimation error of the traffic flow compared with KL divergence model under the same deployment cost. Background: To address the need for interventions for families with parents with mental illness, the evidence-based intervention Let's Talk about Children (LTC) was adapted in the context of adult mental health services in the United States and reframed as the ParentingWell Practice Approach. This study focuses on the early implementation phase of the adapted practice in Massachusetts. Methods: As part of the adaptation and implementation process, practitioners from provider agencies serving adults with mental illness were invited to participate in the ParentingWell Learning Collaborative (PWLC), which included in-person learning collaborative sessions and follow-up virtual coaching sessions. This paper focuses on data obtained during and in response to the PWLC virtual coaching sessions, from 29 participants. Specific research questions included: (1) What themes emerged in coaching sessions related to practitioners' experiences during the early implementation of the ParentingWell Practice Approach (2) In what ways are coaching sessions helpful to the practitioners as they implement the ParentingWell Practice Approach? Coaching sessions were recorded, and transcribed, and the data were analyzed qualitatively to identify early implementation themes. Practitioners completed feedback surveys online (which included Likert scale items and open-ended questions) following virtual coaching sessions to evaluate the usefulness of coaching sessions. Results: Coaching sessions reflected the following themes related to practitioners' experiences during the early implementation of ParentingWell: (1) practitioners identify and share concrete approaches to supporting parents; (2) practitioners reflect on parents' needs related to support, advocacy, problemsolving, and parenting skills; (3) practitioners reflect on their own personal experiences; and (4) practitioners' recognize the importance of self-care strategies for themselves and for parents served. Practitioners indicated that coaching sessions were useful in supporting the implementation of a new practice. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence for the benefits of coaching in the implementation of ParentingWell. Believing that if general hospitals are pressured into admitting involuntary patients without adequate safeguards, care may deteriorate, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society drafted a detailed position statement enumerating what resources and services would be required to provide the same high-quality care for involuntary as for voluntary patients. Among other points, treatment of involuntary patients should be considered "psychiatric intensive care," with attention given to the needs for special staffing, training, ancillary services, and funding. To provide high-quality care in the least restrictive environment, separate locked and unlocked units should be provided. Not all involuntary patients can be cared for within a general hospital, the statement says; some require specialized units more appropriately located elsewhere. The general hospital's willingness to accept involuntary patients should be contingent on its being able to control its admissions, and on the hospital's not being the provider of last resort.

The article introduces an article in the series about the treatment resistance and patient authority at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It notes that the paper explores and illustrate the work of treatment teams as an adjunctive therapeutic psychoanalysis modality as an approach for treatment resistant patients at the center.

The article presents the winner for the "The Journal of Experimental Biology" Outstanding Paper Prize, 2005. Ms. Havalee T. Henry from Richard Marsh's lab at Northeastern University in Boston bagged the first prize with her publication "Performance of guinea fowl Numida meleagris during dumping requires storage and release of elastic energy". Henry is an undergrad at the University of Connecticut, but has specialized in Molecular and Cell Biology, as well as having a great interest in muscle physiology.

In this paper we explore the degree to which patents are representative of the magnitude, direction, and impact of the knowledge spilling out of the university by focusing on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and in particular, on the Departments of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative data, we show that patenting is a minority activity: a majority of the faculty in our sample never patent,and publication rates far outstrip patenting rates. Most faculty members estimate that patents account for less than 10% of the knowledge that transfers from their labs. Our results also suggest that in two important ways patenting is not representative of the patterns of knowledge generation and transfer from MIT: patent volume does not predict publication volume, and those firms that cite MIT papers are in general not the same firms as those that cite MIT patents. However, patent volume is positively correlated with paper citations, suggesting that patent counts may be reasonable measures of research impact. We close by speculating on the implications of our results for the difficult but important question of whether, in this setting, patenting acts as a substitute or a complement to the process of fundamental research. The paper presented by J.C. Jackson and F.K. Graham of the University of Wisconsin cites threshold intensity effects on two orienting response components. Sokolovian theory suggests that the orienting response should be large near psychophysical threshold, fall to a minimum around 10-20 decibels and then rise again until it is depressed by competition with the defense reflex.

The complex environmental impact makes it difficult to predict wind speed with high precision for multiple wind turbines. Most existing research methods model the temporal dependence of wind speeds, ignoring the spatial correlation between wind turbines. In this paper, we propose a multi-wind turbine wind speed prediction model based on Weighted Diffusion Graph Convolution and Gated Attention Network (WDGCGAN). To address the strong nonlinear correlation problem among multiple wind turbines, we use the maximal information coefficient (MIC) method to calculate the correlation weights between wind turbines and construct a weighted graph for multiple wind turbines. Next, by applying Diffusion Graph Convolution (DGC) transformation to the weight matrix of the weighted graph, we obtain the spatial graph diffusion matrix of the wind farm to aggregate the high-order neighborhood information of the graph nodes. Finally, by combining the DGC with the gated attention recurrent unit (GAU), we establish a spatio-temporal model for multi-turbine wind speed prediction. Experiments on the wind farm data in Massachusetts show that the proposed method can effectively aggregate the spatio-temporal information of wind turbine nodes and improve the prediction accuracy of multiple wind speeds. In the 1h prediction task, the average RMSE of the proposed model is 28% and 33.1% lower than that of the Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), respectively.
