Industrial residue application to soil was investigated by integrating granulated blast furnace or converter steel slag with residues from the pulp and paper industry in various formulations. Specimen analysis included relevant physicochemical properties, total element concentrations (HCl+HNO3 digestion, USEPA 3051) and chemical speciation of chosen heavy metals (CH3COOH, NH2OH·HCl and H2O2+H2O2+CH3COONH4, the BCR method). Produced matrices showed liming effects comparable to commercial ground limestone and included significant quantities of soluble vital nutrients. The use of converter steel slag, however, led to significant increases in the total concentrations of Cr and V. Subsequently, total Cr was attested to occur as Cr(III) by Na2CO3+NaOH digestion followed by IC UV/VIS-PCR (USEPA 3060A). Additionally, 80.6% of the total concentration of Cr (370 mg kg(-1), d.w.) occurred in the residual fraction. As two important industrial manufacturing materials, ceramics and metals have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. The field of material manufacturing has witnessed efforts to develop technical processes that can properly combine these two alloys, aiming to effectively use their respective advantages. The welding technology for ceramics and metals, as a research topic with broad prospects, is comprehensively and deeply analyzed in this review. The current research progress in this field is analyzed from different process perspectives such as fusion welding, brazing welding, diffusion welding. By using appropriate intermediate materials between these two materials, the residual stress and brittle intermetallics near the interface of the transition joint can be minimised by solving the thermal expansion mismatch, reducing the bonding temperature and pressure.

As a byproduct of steelmaking, steel slag occupies significant land resources and poses potential environmental and safety challenges due to its extensive accumulation. Recently, steel slag has shown promising applications in the field of concrete. However, considering the complexity of the plateau environment, the utilization of steel slag is relatively lacking, and its low reactivity and poor volume stability remain the main factors restricting its application in plateau concrete. This paper reviews the research status of steel slag activation techniques for concrete, including wet grinding, chemi-excitation, high-temperature activation, and carbonation treatment. The effects of different treatment techniques on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete and the potential issues are discussed. Although different modification methods can improve the activity and volume stability of steel slag to varying degrees, a single modification technology is difficult to achieve the high-quality utilization of steel slag in concrete on the plateau. Based on this, a steel slag grading grinding-magnetic separation utilization technique suitable for high-altitude areas is proposed, which is beneficial for improving the added value and utilization rate of steel slag in concrete., (© 2024. Electric arc furnace (EAF) slag is a coproduct of steel production used primarily for construction purposes. Some applications of EAF slag result in residential exposures by incidental ingestion and inhalation of airborne dust. To evaluate potential health risks, an EAF slag characterization program was conducted to measure concentrations of metals and leaching potential (including oral bioaccessibility) in 38 EAF slag samples. Arsenic, hexavalent chromium, iron, vanadium, and manganese (Mn) were identified as constituents of interest (COIs). Using a probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) approach, estimated distributions of dose for COIs were assessed, and increased cancer risks and noncancer hazard quotients (HQs) at the 50th and 95th percentiles were calculated. For the residents near slag-covered roads, cancer risk and noncancer HQs were <1E - 6 and 1, respectively. For residential driveway or landscape exposure, at the 95th percentile, cancer risks were 1E - 6 and 7E - 07 based on oral exposure to arsenic and hexavalent chromium, respectively. HQs ranged from 0.07 to 2 with the upper bound due to ingestion of Mn among children. To expand the analysis, a previously published physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was used to estimate Mn levels in the globus pallidus for both exposure scenarios and further evaluate the potential for Mn neurotoxicity. The PBPK model estimated slightly increased Mn in the globus pallidus at the 95th percentile of exposure, but concentrations did not exceed no-observed-adverse-effect levels for neurological effects. The steel industry, crucial to the global economy, grapples with critical sustainable challenges, including high energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and non-renewable resource utilization, making sustainability imperative for upholding its economic role without compromising the planet or societal well-being. This study proposes a framework aimed at advancing sustainability in the steel industry through the articulation of the triple helix sectors (university, industry, and government). Based on the integrative review scientific method, systematic selection, interpretation, and synthesis of information from various sources were carried out to map a technical-scientific scenario of sustainability in the steel industry. This scenario informed benchmarking which, in light of the scientific theory and the authors' expertise, enabled the proposition of customized actions aimed at the triple helix actors. The main theoretical-scientific contribution lies in deepening and expanding the knowledge that connects sustainability to the steel industry, thus reinforcing the basis for future research and empirical studies. As for the managerial-applied contribution, this work can guide universities in developing sustainable projects and establishing industrial partnerships; steel companies benefit from the best practices and technologies, while also achieving regulatory compliance; and governments can promote public policies that boost sustainability in the steel sector., (© 2024. At present, the informatization level in the construction process of steel structures is relatively low. Meanwhile, digital twin technology, with better interactive features, provides a new development direction for the intelligent construction of steel structures. Therefore, this paper introduces the concept of a digital twin into the steel structure construction process, analyzes the connotation and characteristics of the digital twin model, and proposes the digital twin model architecture for steel structure construction processes. Furthermore, a method for establishing a digital twin model for steel structure construction processes is presented, which includes three stages: the acquisition and transmission of physical space data, the construction of a digital twin virtual model, and information exchange in the digital twin model. Based on these concepts, this paper describes a digital twin system architecture for the steel structure construction process from the perspective of data flow in the digital twin model. Finally, with the application of information technology in the steel structure construction process of the university park library project in Xiongan New Area and the reconstruction and expansion project of the Nanchong Gaoping airport, the digital twin model and its establishment method methods are analyzed practically and demonstrated effectively in this study. Indirect carbonation of steel slag is an effective method for CO 2 storage, reducing emissions, and promoting cleaner production in the steel industry. However, challenges remain, such as low Ca 2+ leaching rates and slag management complexities arising from variations in mineral compositions. To address this, a high-temperature modification process is proposed to alter the mineral composition and facilitate the synergistic utilization of calcium and iron. This study delves into the effects of various solid waste modifications on the leaching of Ca 2+ and the total iron content within steel slag. Results show that high-basicity modified slag forms Ca 2 (Al, Fe) 2 O 5 , reducing calcium leaching. Low-alkalinity modified slag produces calcium-rich aluminum minerals and also reduces the leaching of Ca 2+ ions. At a basicity of 2.5, coal gangue, fly ash, and blast slag achieve maximum Ca 2+ leaching rates of 88.93%, 89.46%, and 90.17%, respectively, with corresponding total iron contents of 41.46%, 37.72%, and 35.29%. Upgraded coal gangue exhibits a 50.02% increase in calcium leaching and a 15.58% increase in total iron content compared to the original slag. This enhances CO 2 fixation and iron resource utilization. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) behavior of the AISI 1020 carbon steel caused by consortia of nitrate-reducing prokaryotes (NRP) and sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP) was investigated separately in hypersaline seawater conditions. Microbiological analysis, surface images, characterization of corrosion products, weight loss, and electrochemical measurements were employed to monitor the corrosion process for 10 days at 40 °C. Compared to abiotic corrosion (control), the extent of corrosion was more aggravated in the conditions with microbial consortia. It corroborates the critical role of microbial activity in corrosion processes in natural and industrial environments since microorganisms are widely spread. Corrosion rates obtained from Tafel extrapolation were statically equal for both microbial consortia (0.093 ± 0.009 mm.y -1 ); however, the maximum pit depth on the steel surface subjected to NRP-MIC was about 25% deeper (48.5 µm) than that caused by SRP-MIC (32.6 µm). In contrast, SRP activity almost doubled the number of pits on the steel surface (2.7 × 10 4  ± 4.1 × 10 3 pits.m -2 ), resulting in more weight loss than NRP activity. In addition, SRP cells formed nanowires to support direct electron uptake from steel oxidation. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study friction and wear properties of three types of steels against paper-based friction disc, including 65Mn, 20#steel and 30CrAl, so as to obtain the appropriate working conditions for different friction materials in the transmission system. Design/methodology/approach: Based on actual working conditions, pin-on-disc tests are conducted on a universal material tester. The two evaluation indexes, including average friction coefficient and variation coefficient, are introduced to analyze the different friction properties among three types of steel. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent wear pattern and wear depth are subsequently studied. Findings: The results show that 65Mn is more suitable for working under heavy load and low velocity, but 30CrAl and 20#steel are suitable for working under light load and high velocity. Moreover, wear primarily occurs on paper-based material and peaks at about 325. Practical implications: This research of different materials and friction property for friction pairs is helpful to improve the performance and prolong the service life of transmission systems. Originality/value: Suitable working conditions of different friction materials are obtained, and the correlation between wear and decomposition in high temperature is verified. Recently, a group of researchers conducted experimental studies on the high-temperature oxidation behaviour of Si-containing steels and published a series of papers in several international journals. Many of the research "findings" in these papers were inconsistent and contradictory with previous results. Based on the different findings, it was claimed that they arrived at "new insights" to the oxidation behaviour of Si-containing steels and discovered a "new method" to reduce the oxide scale amount generated during reheating of Si-containing steels. After examining the experimental methods used, it was revealed that most of the "new findings" were likely the direct consequence of the use of a very low gas flow rate (30 mL/min) in their experiments. This resulted in an extremely low oxygen supply rate when the oxygen concentration in the experimental gas was low, which in turn limited the reaction rate that could be possibly achieved by gas–steel reaction if abundant gas had been made available. The kinetics results and scale thickness/structures thus produced were therefore misleading, which also led to the erroneous interpretation of the results. In lubricated tribo-contacts, hydrogen ingress in steel is possible due to chemical reactions of lubricant components like base oils or additives, and/or contamination upon service particularly water, and/or corrosion processes, and/or electrostatic fields or current flow. Absorbed by the metal, atomic hydrogen may cause serious deleterious effects on the physical-chemical and mechanical properties, reducing the material's ability to withstand the design loads. The present research work is focused on analyzing the influence of electric field on lubricating oils in contact with steel surface. In order to evaluate the possibility of atomic hydrogen generation and permeation into the steel under cathodic polarization of lubricating oils the electrochemical permeation technique developed by Devanathan and Stachurski is used. The input cell of a Devanathan-Stachurski set up is appropriately modified by realizing a very close distance between the working electrode (steel membrane) and a Pt counter electrode with the oil between. This significantly increases the sensibility of the set up and allows the application of larger voltage and higher temperature to enable hydrogen generation from lubricating oils. The investigations presented in this conference paper focus on the hole bearing resistance of symmetric single‐bolt connections, taking into account the distinct hardening behaviour of various steel grades and quantifying its impact on the resulting load‐carrying behaviour. They synthetize the findings of a larger study that was published in full in previous publications by the authors. The main focus of the study was put on the limitation of the hole bearing deformations by defining a corresponding "resistance", which is thus a quantity with the background of an implicit deformation limitation. Experimental investigations were carried out on four different steel grades, each with eight different geometries, in order to investigate the influence of this hardening behaviour on the hole bearing deformations. The paper presents a new approach to define the point on the load‐deformation curve between acceptable and excessive deformations. Based on the results of the hole bearing tests in combination with the new approach to define the transition point between acceptable and excessive deformations, an adapted resistance model is presented. In this model, the hardening behaviour of the steel is taken into account, whereby here specifically the ratio fu/fy of tensile strength to yield strength influences the load‐bearing behaviour. The proposed adaptation of the hole bearing verification which takes the fu/fy ratio into account facilitates the optimal use of material and can thus save resources. Superhydrophobic coatings were successfully fabricated on steel substrates using potentiostatic electrodeposition of Ni and Ni-graphene, Ni-G, coatings followed by immersion in an ethanolic solution of stearic acid, SA. Rice straw, an environmentally friendly biomass resource, was used to synthesize high-quality graphene. The Raman spectra proved the high quality of the produced graphene. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, results showed that the Ni coating grafted with stearic acid, Ni-SA, and the Ni-G composite grafted with stearic acid, Ni-G-SA, were successfully deposited on the steel substrate. The scanning electron microscope, SEM, results showed that the prepared superhydrophobic coatings exhibit micro-nano structures. The wettability results revealed that the values of contact angles, CAs, for Ni-SA and Ni-G-SA coatings are 155.7° and 161.4°, while the values of sliding angles, SAs, for both coatings are 4.0° and 1.0°, respectively. The corrosion resistance, chemical stability, and mechanical abrasion resistance of the Ni-G-SA coating were found to be greater than those of the Ni-SA coating., (© 2022. To accomplish China's sustainable growth, it is critical to identify the primary factors affecting environmental quality in the steel industry. In this positioning, foreign direct investment (FDI), energy intensity, and technological innovation have emerged as strong pillars of the steel industry. However, there are growing concerns of carbon emission from this industry which is still debatable. In this context, this study measures the effect of FDI, energy intensity, and technology innovation on environmental quality in the steel industry from 28 provinces of China. The study uses the provincial data for China over the period 2000-2018. In addition to examining unit root properties and cointegration, this study employed Augmented Mean Group regression for estimating long-run relationships among study variables. The findings reveal the negative effect of FDI and technology innovation on environmental quality. These findings indicate that FDI and technology innovation have shaped the energy intensity in the steel industry. The positive coefficient value of energy intensity shows that innovations for environmental conservation and energy usage are minimal and did not perform an integral part in lowering carbon emissions. These findings are important in formulating successful emission reduction policies after controlling the effects of urbanization and economic growth for the Chinese steel sector., (© 2022. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), or microbial biocorrosion, is caused directly by microbial metabolic activities/products or induced by microbial biofilm's damage of a protective film that exposes a solid surface to a pre-existing corrosive environment. MIC causes billions of dollars of losses in various industrial processes, especially in oil and gas and water utilities. The mitigation of problematic industrial microbes typically relies on biocides whose discharges can cause environmental problems. Thus, more effective biocide applications are desired to minimize environmental impact. D-Limonene, a citrus peel oil, generally regarded as safe (GRAS), was used to enhance the popular biodegradable tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) biocide. An oilfield mixed-culture biofilm was grown anaerobically in enriched artificial seawater containing C1018 carbon steel coupons for 7 days at 37 °C. One hundred ppm (w/w) D-limonene reduced general heterotrophic bacteria (GHB) and acid-producing bacteria (APB) effectively, leading to 5.4-log and 6.0-log reductions in sessile GHB and APB cell counts, respectively, compared to no treatment control. The combination of 100 ppm D-limonene + 100 ppm THPS achieved extra 1.0-log SRB, 0.6-log GHB and 0.5-log APB reductions in sessile cell counts, which led to extra 58% reduction in microbial corrosion mass loss (1.2 vs. 0.5 mg/cm 2 ) and extra 30% reductions in maximum pit depth (11.5 vs. 8.1 µm), compared to 100 ppm THPS-only treatment. Linear polarization resistance and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) corrosion data supported mass loss and pitting data. Purpose: This paper provides a disruption survival guide for companies during times of macro transformation. Design/methodology/approach: The research compared the S&P 500 – as proxy for the US economy – from 1996 and 2018. Of companies no longer on the list, 12 died, including two from manufacturing: Bethlehem Steel and Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC). Still, some US manufacturers survived or even thrived during the period. To understand why, the paper compares Bethlehem, which died in 2003, to US Steel, which has survived but was removed from the S&P 500 list in 2014, and to Nucor, which has stayed on the list. POSCO is also used for comparison. The OMC case adds a different industry perspective. Findings: The main findings from these cases are as follows: stay fit financially and avoid overreaching in good times, use operation strategies such as Lean and Six Sigma to build a culture of continual innovation and stay close to customers to compete on the basis of differentiation, particularly if competing on price is not a realistic option. The good news is differentiation is possible even in seemingly commoditized sectors like steel. Research limitations/implications: This paper contributes to the literature on differentiation as a strategy for competing with low-cost disruptors. Practical implications: This paper provides insights into the use of Lean, Six Sigma and other strategies for creating a culture of continual innovation among employees, customers, suppliers and other strategic partners. And, building on this culture, to compete on the basis of value-added differentiation, particularly if competing on price is not a realistic option. Originality/value: The paper cuts through complex, fast-changing, transformative macro issues – e.g., Chinese competition and trade uncertainties related to new tariffs – and provides practical, timeless insights for navigating in such times. The focus here is on strategies for competing on the basis of value-added differentiation, particularly if competing on price is not a viable option. The effects of supersaturation and steel composition on the morphology of Al2O3 inclusions were investigated. Thermodynamic calculations with Factsage 7.0® were used to predict the degree of supersaturation and select the starting aluminum and oxygen amounts for the experiment. Deoxidation experiments were performed by melting the charge material and using specially designed samplers to study the local deoxidation reactions. The inclusions in the collected steel samples were analyzed on filter paper in 3D after extraction from the steel. The observed Al2O3 morphologies consisted of dendrites and clusters and results showed that increasing supersaturation had the strongest influence on the length of the dendrite. The observed clusters resulted from collision, heterogeneous nucleation and growth on existing Al2O3 inclusions, and possibly oxygen gradients and liquid steel convection during nucleation and growth of Al2O3. In the present investigation, biocorrosion inhibition efficiency of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) aqueous extract on carbon steel in presence of four corrosion causing bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis, Streptomyces parvus, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Acinetobacter baumannii) was explored. Weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and AC impedance studies were carried out with and without bacterial strains and clove extract. The results obtained from weight loss and AC impedance studies indicate that these corrosion causing bacterial strains accelerated the biocorrosion reaction and biofilm playing a key role in this process. However, the addition of clove extract into the corrosive medium decreased the corrosion current and increased the solution and charge transfer resistance. The significant inhibition efficiency of about 87% was archived in the mixed consortia system with clove extract. The bioactive compounds were playing an important role in the antibacterial activity of the clove extract. It was revealed that clove extract has both biocidal and corrosion inhibition properties.

In the research, various methods for developing latent fingerprints on various surfaces have been reported. This paper describes a new powdering method for the development of latent fingerprints that is simple and nontoxic and can be used on a variety of substrates. In this study, non-toxic, simple, and easily accessible turmeric powder and Neem powder were used, all of which are commercially available natural powders with a variety of domestic and traditional applications. These powders have been used to decipher latent fingerprints on ten different substrates, including glass, lamination sheet, transparency sheet, metal surface, wooden surface, plain paper, cardboard, plastic, tile, and steel. It has been discovered that it produces very clear results on most surfaces. The powders were used to give the best results on all surfaces except plain paper. Steel slags (SS) are the major waste produced by iron and steel industry. Slags may be reused as recycled materials, instead of natural aggregates (NA), to reduce the final disposal in a landfill and the exploitation of raw materials. However, the reuse of SS may generate a potential release of toxic compounds for the environment and humans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxicity and genotoxicity of SS, in comparison with NA, by using an integrated chemical-biological approach to enable their safe reuse in engineering applications. Leaching solutions from samples were obtained by using short-term leaching tests (CEN EN 12457-2, 2004) usually adopted for the evaluation of waste recovery and final disposal. Chemical analyses of leachates were performed according to the Italian legislation on waste recovery (Ministerial Decree 186/2006). The leaching solutions were assayed by using toxicity test on Daphnia magna. Moreover, mutagenicity/genotoxicity tests on Salmonella typhimurium, Allium cepa, and human leucocytes and fibroblasts were carried out. The releases of pollutants from all samples were within the limits of the Italian legislation for waste recovery. Despite the effects that SS and NA could have on different cells, in terms of toxicity and genotoxicity, globally, SS do not seem to be any more hazardous than NA. This paper deals with investigation of corrosion processes on construction steel in contact with aqueous solutions of surface coatings of high gloss and standard uncoated papers for sheet-fed printing. During the period of four months, changes in the mass of steel specimens were measured (loss of material), as well as changes in pH values and conductivity of the examined solutions. Formation of corrosion products on the surface was identified by changes of spectrophotometric reemission in the visible portion of the steel spectrum and by FT-IR spectral recordings. In addition, the electrochemical potentiodynamic measurements were carried out with the direct current and the method of linear polarization and Tafel's extrapolation, by which the corrosion parameters were determined: corrosion potential, corrosion current density, polarization resistance cathodic and anodic inclination of Tafel's lines, as well as the corrosion rate. The results show that the dynamics of the corrosion in printing machines is directly influenced by the type of the paper used for printing. This investigation gave an insight into dynamics and mechanisms of corrosion under conditions close to those in printing production, thus facilitating better understanding of the entire process. Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns recently proposed by the third author. The new column consists of an inner steel tube and an outer FRP tube, with the space between them filled with concrete. The new column possesses many advantages over existing columns including its good ductility, corrosion resistance and ease for construction. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the behavior of the new hybrid DSTCs subject to eccentric compression as well as results from a corresponding theoretical model using the fiber element approach. A so-called 'variable confinement model' was adopted in the theoretical analysis for the concrete in the hybrid DSTCs, to account for the effect of strain gradient on the confinement effectiveness.
