Purpose: This study aims to understand the relationship between the elements of a startup firms' management control system (MCS) package, its entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: The authors collected survey data from a sample of 100 Brazilian startups who had exited technology-based parks and incubators. The authors used two data analysis techniques, namely, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Findings: The findings show that cultural and planning controls were the only two MCS elements that were included in all high-performing startup firms' MCS packages. The authors also found that EO has a positive influence on firm performance through the MCS package. Research limitations/implications: The mixed-method approach allowed for a holistic view of the analyzed phenomenon. PLS-SEM analysis was applied to the symmetric relationships between the proposed relationships while fsQCA was used to analyze the asymmetric combinations between EO dimensions and MCS package elements, which promoted high firm performance. Practical implications: The authors show how different combinations of MCS elements form a package, mediating EO, which can enable high performance. Originality/value: Using fsQCA and PLS-SEM, the authors were able to better understand the important role that MCS package adoption has on a startups' performance and provide new evidence regarding the interface between MCS and EO. This study analyzes the relationships between the dimensions of organizational environment dynamism, complexity and munificence and firm performance and mediating effect of strategic orientation. Data were collected by surveying 170 managers of Brazilian hotels and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results revealed a positive relationship between entrepreneurial strategic orientation and performance and a negative relationship between conservative strategic orientation and performance. Environmental munificence had a direct and positive impact on performance. Environmental dynamism did not have an impact on performance, but did affect both conservative and entrepreneurial strategic orientations; environmental complexity had a negative effect on entrepreneurial orientation, also with no direct impact on performance. In turn, strategic orientation mediated the relationships between dynamism and performance and between complexity and performance, but did not mediate between munificence and performance. It can be concluded that complex environments reduce the impetus for enterprising approaches, decreasing performance, and that if the reaction to a perception of dynamism is an increase in entrepreneurship, then performance also increases. This article analyzes a policy instrument that nurtures knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The PIPE Program is a small-business innovation research run by The Sao Paulo Research Foundation since 1997. While prior literature has pointed out that firm-level heterogeneity is an important feature to consider when evaluating these kinds of policies, heterogeneity has not been appropriately addressed as a factor of consideration for improving funding effectiveness. This study contributes to the literature by empirically appraising the Brazilian PIPE Program, while explicitly considering heterogeneity across firms. We conduct an empirical evaluation of a set of companies funded and non-funded by PIPE employing a multiple correspondence analysis followed by a clustering analysis. The results identify firm performance patterns on different dimensions, determining that the effects associated with the PIPE vary according to firm characteristics. Findings underscore the need to incorporate heterogeneity across firm types as a relevant source of evidence in funding instruments to support policy design and decision-making toward a more effective allocation of resources. Objective: The objective of this article is to assess and compare the factors influencing the performance of new ventures within top business accelerators across three countries using the Resource Based View (RBV) theory. Research Design & Methods: The key analysed parameters are funding dimensions, survivability, acquisition, and growth of 1286 new ventures that graduated from the top two accelerators in Brazil, India, and the USA, i.e. countries from developed and emerging economies. Methods we used were machine learning and two independent sample t-tests. Findings: Input seed funding by accelerators played a dominant role and improved funding trajectories. The external ecosystem was an important differentiator and impacted new ventures' survivability, growth, and funding outcomes. Capabilities and competencies of accelerators differentiated outcomes within the same ecosystem while external environment dampened accelerator outcomes in emerging economies. Implications & Recommendations: Accelerators from emerging ecosystems should strive to augment their human capital and network capabilities, including seed funding, while policy-makers should improve ecosystem index values mentioned in this study. Contribution & Value Added: This is the first of its kind study that extended the RBV theory to accelerators and disentangled the effect of the external environment and RBV on accelerators across three ecosystems with a comprehensive framework of measures.
