Abstract: The interdependent effects of temperature and guest uptake on the structure of the ultramicroporous metal–organic framework [Cu3(cdm)4] (cdm=C(CN)2(CONH2)−) were explored in detail by using in situ neutron scattering and density functional theory calculations. The tetragonal lattice displays an anisotropic thermal response related to a hinged “lattice‐fence” mechanism, unusual for this topology, which is facilitated by pivoting of the rigid cdm anion about the Cu nodes. Calculated pore‐size metrics clearly illustrate the potential for temperature‐mediated adsorption in ultramicroporous frameworks due to thermal fluctuations of the pore diameter near the value of the target guest kinetic diameter, though in [Cu3(cdm)4] this is counteracted by a competing contraction of the pore with increasing temperature as a result of the anisotropic lattice response. Y(btc) (btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) is a metal-organic framework that exhibits significant adsorption of industrially-relevant gases such as H2, CH4, and O2. Previous studies have noted a surprising lack of close interactions between the adsorbed guest molecules and Y, despite the apparent availability of a "bare-metal" binding site. We have extended our previous work in a detailed investigation of the adsorption behaviours of CO2, CD4, and O2 in Y(btc) over a range of concentrations using in situ neutron powder diffraction methods. The O-Y-O bond angles enclosing the bare-metal site are found to change considerably depending on the type and quantity of guest molecules present. Multiple binding sites are found for each guest species, and the largest changes in O-Y-O angles are accompanied by changes in the filling sequences of the binding sites, pointing to an important interplay between guest-induced framework distortions and binding site accessibility. These results suggest the potential for coordinatively flexible rare-earth metal centres to promote guest-selective binding in metal-organic frameworks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thestructure of the nanoporous metal–organic frameworkCu3(BTC)2(BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)with a variety of molecular guests was studied in situusing single crystal X-ray diffraction. By collecting crystal structuredata for a series of guests within the same host crystal, insightsinto the molecular interactions underpinning guest adsorption processeshave been gained. Adsorption behaviors are influenced strongly byboth enthalpic and entropic thermodynamic, as well as interpore steric(size-exclusion) effects, and we note correlations between guest attributesand these effects. Vapor adsorption measurements revealed a guestuptake capacity inversely proportional to guest size. Correspondingly,structural results show that guests reside in the smallest pores accessibleto them. Interpore steric effects for larger guests cause these tobe excluded from the smallest pores, and this corresponds to lowertotal uptake. Both hydrophilic and lipophilic small guests adsorbfavorably into the 5 Å diameter smallest pore of the material,with the number of guests in these pores dependent on guest size andtheir location, in turn dependent upon both guest–guest interactionsand competition between hydrogen-bonding interactions at the aperturesof the smallest pore and lipophilic interactions at the center ofthe smallest pore. Hydrophilic guests with lone electron pairs interactpreferentially with the coordinatively unsaturated Cu sites of thedesolvated framework, with the number of these depending on stericinteractions between neighboring bound guests and guest flexibility.Guest coordination at the Cu sites has a significant effect on theframework structure, increasing the Cu···Cu distancein the dinuclear unit, with the Cu3(BTC)2unitcell being smaller when guests that do not coordinate with the Cuare present, and in the case of cyclohexane, smaller than for thedesolvated framework. Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have recently been shown in some cases to exhibit strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior, while framework interpenetration has been found to reduce NTE in many materials. Using powder and single-crystal diffraction methods we investigate the thermal expansion behavior of interpenetrated Cu3(btb)2 (MOF-14) and find that it exhibits an anomalously large NTE effect. Temperature-dependent structural analysis shows that, contrary to other interpenetrated materials, in MOF-14 the large positive thermal expansion of weak interactions that hold the interpenetrating networks together results in a low-energy contractive distortion of the overall framework structure, demonstrating a new mechanism for NTE. The yttrium-based metal–organic framework, Y(btc) (btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), shows moderate uptake of methane (0.623 mmol g−1) and molecular oxygen (0.183 mmol g−1) at 1 bar and 308 K. Neutron powder-diffraction data for the guest-free, CD4-, and O2-loaded framework reveal multiple adsorption sites for each gas. Both molecular guests exhibit interactions with the host framework characterised by distances between the framework and guest atoms that range from 2.83 to 4.81 Å, with these distances identifying interaction most commonly between the guest molecule and the carboxylate functional groups of the benzenetricarboxylate bridging ligand of the host. An ultramicroporous metal–organicframework (MOF) is reportedthat contains 0.35 nm nanotube-like channels with an unprecedentedconcentration of vacant CuIIcoordination sites. The nonintersecting,narrow channels in [Cu3(cdm)4] (cdm = C(CN)2(CONH2)−) align in two perpendiculardirections, structurally resembling copper-doped carbon nanotubeswith CuIIembedded in the walls of the channels. The combinationof ultramicroporosity with the exposed CuIIcoordinationsites gives size-based selectivity of CO2over CH4, based on pore-size distribution and modeling. Neutron powder diffractionand molecular dynamics simulations show the close packing of singlerows of guests within the tubular nanostructure and interaction ofCO2with the exposed metal sites.
