The terrain, such as Taiwan Island, have been shown to have complex effects on typhoons and the associated typhoon waves. Terrain effects change with typhoon tracks. In this study, three types of typhoon tracks (northern, middle and southern) were defined according to the relationship between the typhoon tracks and Taiwan Island. Typhoons on these three tracks and typhoon waves were simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting–Simulating Waves Nearshore model. In each type of typhoon, a control case without the Taiwan topography was simulated to compare with real cases. The results showed that typhoons on different tracks were affected by the terrain of Taiwan Island in different ways. Taiwan Island had weakening, decelerating and deflective effects on typhoons. The ranking for the weakening effect was middle track (81%) > southern track (69%) > northern track (3%). The decelerating effect was 7% in the northern track and 25% in the southern track. The deflective effect of the terrain makes typhoons on the northern (southern) track deflect toward the south (north). When a typhoon on a middle track passed over Taiwan Island, a new center of low pressure would replace the former center and make the track discontinuous. In addition, the influence of typhoons on regions near Taiwan Island changed with the typhoon’s tracks. The influence ranking of typhoons in Taiwan Island was the middle track > southern track > northern track, which was consistent with that of typhoons in the Taiwan Strait and opposite to that of typhoons in Fujian Province. The influence ranking of typhoons on the Taiwan Strait was the opposite of the typhoon intensity ranking, which suggests that the intensities of wind and waves in the strait were more related to typhoon tracks than typhoon intensity. The variations in the significant wave height were similar to those of the wind speed, but there was a time lag (2 h) between them due to the wave growth process and swells. In addition, the significant wave height distribution sometimes differed from the wind speed distribution under the influence of swells and terrain.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely used for observing sea-surface wind fields (SSWFs), with many scholars having evaluated the performance of SAR in SSWF retrieval. Due to the large systems and high costs of traditional SAR, a tendency towards the development of smaller and more cost-effective SAR systems has emerged. However, to date, there has been no evaluation of the SSWF retrieval performance of miniaturized SAR systems. This study utilized 1053 HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1 miniaturized SAR images covering the Southeast China Sea to retrieve SSWFs. After a quality control procedure, the retrieved winds were subsequently compared with ERA5, buoy, and ASCAT data. The retrieved wind speeds demonstrated root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 2.42 m/s, 1.64 m/s, and 3.29 m/s, respectively, while the mean bias errors (MBEs) were found to be −0.44 m/s, 1.08 m/s, and −1.65 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, the retrieved wind directions exhibited RMSEs of 11.5°, 36.8°, and 41.7°, with corresponding MBEs of −1.3°, 2.4°, and −8.8°, respectively. The results indicate that HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1 SAR satellites have the potential and practicality for SSWF retrieval, validating the technical indicators and performance requirements implemented during the satellites’ design phase.

Typhoons and typhoon waves can cause disasters in coastal areas around the world. The Taiwan Strait often experiences typhoons, especially in summer. Numerical models have been adopted to predict typhoons and reduce losses. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is widely used in typhoon simulations, and the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model performs well in wave simulations. However, significant uncertainty remains in terms of choosing suitable WRF physical parameterizations in different situations. To evaluate the effect of WRF physical parameterizations on wind and wave simulations, 27 simulation experiments were designed. Three typhoon events (Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti) with different tracks that influenced the Taiwan Strait were simulated. Three parameters (wind speed, wind direction and significant wave height) were assessed using Taylor diagrams, and it was found that the best simulation experiment changed according to typhoon tracks and physical parameters. In wind speed simulation, the best simulation experiment is 12 for typhoon Dujuan and 19 for typhoon Goni and Meranti. From the perspective of wind direction simulation, experiments 26, 23, and 2 performed best for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. And experiments 19, 1, and 20 had the best performances in significant wave height simulation for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. The WRF-SWAN model using the best simulation experiment reduced the error and exhibited good performance in the wind and wave simulations. Skill scores of three parameters were all over 70 for typhoon Goni and 80 for typhoon Dujuan and Meranti. The applicability of the best simulation experiments was demonstrated in typhoon simulations with similar tracks. The accuracy of the wave simulation depended on wind speed, wind direction, and their interaction. In addition, a scheme’s sensitivity changed with different typhoon tracks. This study provides references for designing physical parameterizations for use with the WRF-SWAN model, which may help to simulate typhoons and typhoon waves in the Taiwan Strait more accurately in the future.

FETSWCM-SWAN and DualSPHysics models are used to study the storm flooding process of Dazuo Seawall in Quanzhou city, Fujian province, China. Firstly, a storm over-topping assessment method is proposed. Secondly, the water level and storm wave at the foot of Dazuo Seawall calculated by FETSWCM-SWAN during the process of Typhoon Usagi in 2013 and Typhoon Dujuan in 2015. Finally, the typical wave and storm run-up processes at Dazuo Seawall are modeled by DualSPHysics. The results show that the typical wave run-up of Dazuo Seawall is less than 2 m, but the storm wave run-up can reach 6.85 m under Usagi. The risk is high when high tide is encountered. The risk of storm flooding is classified into three grades. This risk assessment could provide decision-making support to government departments in warning against storm flooding threats.

This work investigates the dynamic behaviors of floating structures with moorings using open-source software for smoothed particle hydrodynamics. DualSPHysics permits us to use graphics processing units to recreate designs that include complex calculations at high resolution with reasonable computational time. A free damped oscillation was simulated, and its results were compared with theoretical data to validate the numerical model developed. The simulated three degrees of freedom (3-DoF) (surge, heave, and pitch) of a rectangular floating box have excellent consistency with experimental data. MoorDyn was coupled with DualSPHysics to include a mooring simulation. Finally, we modelled and simulated a real mariculture platform on the coast of China. We simulated the 3-DoF of this mariculture platform under a typical annual wave and a Typhoon Dujuan wave. The motion was light and gentle under the typical annual wave but vigorous under the Typhoon Dujuan wave. Experiments at different tidal water levels revealed an earlier motion response and smaller motion range during the high tide. The results reveal that DualSPHysics combined with MoorDyn is an adaptive scheme to simulate a coupled fluid–solid–mooring system. This work provides support to disaster warning, emergency evacuation, and proper engineering design.

Typhoons Soudelor (2015) and Dujuan (2015) were two of the strongest storms to affect the Taiwan Strait in 2015. This study investigated the response of the waters on the western bank of the Taiwan Strait to the passage of Soudelor and Dujuan. This included an investigation of the resonant coupling between the tide and storm surge, typhoon wave variation caused by the storm tide, and wave-induced water level rise. Analyses conducted using numerical model simulations and observations from tidal stations and buoys, obtained during the passage of both Soudelor and Dujuan, revealed that resonant coupling between the astronomical tide and storm surge in the Taiwan Strait was prominent, which resulted in tidal period oscillation on the storm surge and reduced tidal range. The tide wave arrived earlier than the predicted astronomical tide because of the existence of the storm surge, which was attributable to acceleration of the tidal wave caused by the water level rise. Wave height observations showed that the storm tide predominantly affected the waves, which resulted in wave heights that oscillated within the tidal period. Numerical experiments indicated that both the current and the water level affected wave height. Waves were affected mainly by the current in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, but mostly by water level when the water level was comparable with water depth. Wave setup simulations revealed that wave setup also oscillated within the tidal period, and that local bathymetry was the most important influencing factor of wave setup distribution.

Two Ocean State Monitoring and Analyzing Radar (OSMAR071) (7.8 MHz) high-frequency (HF) radars and four moored ADCPs were operated concurrently in the southwestern Taiwan Strait during January-March 2013. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons of surface currents were conducted between the HF radars and the ADCPs. Except for a location probably affected by shallow water and sand waves on the Taiwan Banks, the HF-radar-derived radial currents (radials) showed good agreement with the ADCP measured results (correlation coefficient: 0.89-0.98; rms difference: 0.07-0.13 m s-1). To provide further insight into the geophysical processes involved, the performance of the HF-radar-derived radials was further evaluated under different sea states (sea states: 2-6). It was found that both the data returns of the radar-derived radials and the differences between the radar-derived radials and the ADCP-derived radials varied with sea state. The HF radar performed best at sea state 4 in terms of data returns. The spatial coverage increased rapidly as the waves increased from sea state 2 to 4. However, it decreased slowly from sea state 4 to 6. Second, the radial differences were relatively high under lower sea states (2 and 3) at the location where the best agreement was obtained between the radar and ADCP radials, whereas the differences increased as the sea states increased at the other three locations. The differences between the radials measured by the HF radars and the ADCPs could be attributed to wave-induced Stokes drift and spatial sampling differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tooth enamel has the highest degree of biomineralization of all vertebrate hard tissues. During the secretory stage of enamel formation, ameloblasts deposit an extracellular matrix that is in direct contact with the ameloblast plasma membrane. Although it is known that integrins mediate cell-matrix adhesion and regulate cell signaling in most cell types, the receptors that regulate ameloblast adhesion and matrix production are not well characterized. We hypothesized that αvβ6 integrin is expressed in ameloblasts where it regulates biomineralization of enamel. Human and mouse ameloblasts were found to express both b6 integrin mRNA and protein. The maxillary incisors of Itgb6-/- mice lacked yellow pigment and their mandibular incisors appeared chalky and rounded. Molars of Itgb6-/- mice showed signs of reduced mineralization and severe attrition. The mineral-to-protein ratio in the incisors was significantly reduced in Itgb6-/- enamel, mimicking hypomineralized amelogenesis imperfecta. Interestingly, amelogenin-rich extracellular matrix abnormally accumulated between the ameloblast layer of Itgb6-/- mouse incisors and the forming enamel surface, and also between ameloblasts. This accumulation was related to increased synthesis of amelogenin, rather than to reduced removal of the matrix proteins. This was confirmed in cultured ameloblast-like cells, in which αvβ6 integrin was not an endocytosis receptor for amelogenins, although it participated in cell adhesion on this matrix indirectly via endogenously produced matrix proteins. In summary, integrin αvβ6 is expressed by ameloblasts and it plays a crucial role in regulating amelogenin deposition and/or turnover and subsequent enamel biomineralization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
