Three seasons of vertically stratified ichthyoplankton sampling at the edge of the Florida Current revealed consistent accumulations of some coral reef fish larvae under taxon-specific environmental conditions. Environmental variability ranging from predictable (seasonal differences in temperature, diel changes in light, and vertical gradients in many variables) to stochastic (changes in wind-driven turbulence and patchiness of zooplankton) was used to model larval distributions. In five taxa, including the commercially important Epinephelini (groupers), relative larval densities were predicted with significant accuracy based entirely on sampling depth. Models yielding these predictions were cross-validated among all seasons, indicating that larval vertical distributions were remarkably unaffected by other environmental factors, while revealing strong behavioral preferences for specific ranges of hydrostatic pressure. Pomacentridae (damselfish) larvae consistently occupied shallower depths at night than during the day, demonstrating diel vertical migrations. At the community level, depth and season were two major factors structuring larval coral reef fish assemblages. Predictable vertical distributions of larvae in the Straits of Florida can facilitate modeling the same taxa elsewhere in the Western Central Atlantic. Statistical inferences concerning the relative fitness of different types of individuals in a population have not been well developed. We present a method for calculating confidence intervals for maximum likelihood estimates of relative fitness obtained from an experimental design that is common in the fisheries literature. Analysis and simulation show that these confidence limits are reliable. Stable isotope analysis of the potential prey and predator can be combined with gut content analysis to quantify the diet. This dietary knowledge allows the quantitative assessment of the role of key species in energy and contaminant transfer, their impact on prey communities, and their susceptibility to perturbation. The diet of Mysis relicta was examined in Lake Ontario in spring, summer, and autumn using both techniques. Mysids fed on the bottom during the day and in the pelagia and on the bottom at night. A trophic fractionation of 2.2‰ N between mysids and their prey provided the best correspondence between the observed stable isotope signature of mysids and that estimated from their diet. Tissue turnover rate of δ[sup 13] C was slow compared with that of δ[sup 15] N. Diatoms formed 50% of the assimilated diet in May. In September, 25% of large mysids feeding on the bottom contained amphipod parts and 20% contained phytoplankton. The remainder of the diet consisted of zooplankton and rotifers. The contribution of amphipods and phytoplankton could not be quantified. Revised daily consumption estimates, based on this new diet information and clearance rate estimates of consumption, gave daily consumption estimates similar to those estimated from previous bioenergetic modelling.L'analyse des isotopes stables chez les proies et les prédateurs potentiels combinée à l'examen des contenus du tube digestif permet de quantifier le régime alimentaire. Dolly Varden char (Salvelinus malma) and bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) hybridize in areas of secondary contact in northwestern North America but maintain their genetic integrity in spite of gene flow. We examined juvenile stream ecology and adult reproductive ecology of these species in sympatry to test for specializations to alternative niches that may act as a basis for natural selection against hybrids. Juvenile Dolly Varden occupied deeper, faster water and foraged more during daytime in the drift, whereas bull trout used shallower, slower water and made more nighttime foraging attempts towards the substrate. The species showed extensive diet overlap (Schoener's index = 0.7–0.9), and we found evidence for density compensation between species among sites. Our results suggest no obvious basis for selection against hybrids at the juvenile stream-rearing life-history stage. Bull trout, however, are adfluvial, whereas Dolly Varden are permanent stream residents. Bull trout are also much larger at maturity (50–80 cm vs. 12–15 cm) and build redds in faster, deeper water using larger substrate sizes.
