C5F10Ohas recently been found to be a very promising alternative to SF6. This paper is devoted to the investigation of compositions, thermodynamic properties, and transport coefficients of high-temperature C5F10O mixed with CO2 and O2. Firstly, the partition functions and enthalpies of formation for a few molecules (CxFy and CxFyO) which are likely to exist in the mixtures, are calculated based on the G4(MP2) theory. The isomers of the above molecules are selected according to their Gibbs energy. The compositions of C5F10O-CO2-O2 mixtures are then determined using the minimization of the Gibbs free energy. Next, the thermodynamic properties (mass density, specific enthalpy, and specific heat) are derived from the previously calculated compositions. Lastly, the transport coefficients (electrical conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) are calculated based on Chapman-Enskog method. It is found that, as an arc quenching gas,C5F10O could not recombine into itself with the temperature decreasing down to room temperature after the arc extinction. Besides, the key species at room temperature are always CF4, CO2, and C4F6 if graphite is not considered. When taken into account, graphite will replace C4F6 as one of the dominate particles. The mixing of CO2 with C5F10O plasma significantly affects the thermodynamic properties (e.g. vanishing and/or shifting of the peaks in specific heat) and transport coefficients (e.g. reducing viscosity and changing the number of peaks in thermal conductivity), while the addition of O2 with C5F10O-CO2 mixtures has no remarkable influence on both thermodynamic and transport properties. This paper contains new, representative reference equations for the thermal conductivity of carbon dioxide. The equations are based in part upon a body of experimental data that has been critically assessed for internal consistency and for agreement with theory whenever possible. In the case of the dilute-gas thermal conductivity, we incorporated recent theoretical calculations to extend the temperature range of the experimental data. Moreover, in the critical region, the experimentally observed enhancement of the thermal conductivity is well represented by theoretically based equations containing just one adjustable parameter. The correlation is applicable for the temperature range from the triple point to 1100 K and pressures up to 200 MPa. The overall uncertainty (at the 95% confidence level) of the proposed correlation varies depending on the state point from a low of 1% at very low pressures below 0.1 MPa between 300 and 700 K, to 5% at the higher pressures of the range of validity. In this work, the viscoelastic, thermal, and diffusion properties of solutions of polystyrene melts and carbon dioxide (CO2) were analyzed using plate-plate rheometry in the transient mode. The objective of this study was to evaluate a transient shear rheology approach for high viscosity polymer melts, to verify superposition principles for polystyrene/CO2 solutions, and to measure the glass transition temperature as a function of pressure and CO2 concentration. Two different procedures of saturating polystyrene with carbon dioxide were applied, i.e., loading with the blowing agent below the glass transition temperature of polystyrene and at the measurement temperature. Stress-growth experiments in shear were performed in order to measure the transient viscosity of polystyrene/CO2 solutions in the linear regime. A shift of the transient viscosity data to a mastercurve was applied in order to determine the shift factor of the viscosity and the average relaxation time. Our data indicate that the steady-state viscosity and the average relaxation time are proportional to the temperature-pressure-concentration shift factor aT,p,c within experimental scatter, and consequently a time-temperature-pressure-concentration superposition principle holds for polystyrene/CO2 solutions. Whereas the viscosity of polystyrene strongly depends on the applied temperature and pressure, the elastic equilibrium compliance depicts only a weak dependence on temperature and pressure. Simulation studies predicted an orientational ordering transition of the molecular axis of supercritical CO[sub 2], inside individual graphite pores, with size of the order of few molecular diameters. Study of the diffusion equation over a real porous medium, showed significant influence of the transition on the adsorbate diffusivity. Measured permeability of CO[sub 2] adsorbed in a nanoporous carbon membrane, confirmed the simulation results by exhibiting unusually high permeability values in the vicinity of the transition, and elucidated the significance of the thermodynamics in the study of the kinetic properties of the adsorbed phase. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. The isochoric thermal conductivities of the solid solutions (CO2)0.905Kr0.095 and (CO2)1-xXex (x=0.052 and 0.097) of different densities are investigated in the temperature interval from 150 K to the onset of melting. An unusual effect of point defects on the thermal conductivity has been detected. In pure CO2 at T>150 K the isochoric thermal conductivity decreases smoothly with increasing temperature. In contrast, the thermal conductivity of CO2/Kr and CO2/Xe solid solutions first decreases, passing through a minimum at 200–210 K, and then starts to increase with temperature up to the onset of melting. This behavior of the isochoric thermal conductivity is attributed to the rotation of the CO2 molecules, which gain more freedom as the spherically symmetrical inert gas atoms are dissolved in the CO2. A self-consistent approach is proposed to determine the temperature dependent thermal conductivity k(T) of fused silica, for a range of temperatures up to material evaporation using a CO2 laser irradiation. Calculation of the temperature of silica using a two-dimensional axi-symmetric code was linked step by step as the laser power was increased with experimental measurements using infrared thermography. We show that previously reported k(T) does not reproduce the temporal profile as well as our adaptive fit which shows that k(T) evolves with slope discontinuities at the annealing temperature and the softening temperature.
