Alaska's boreal forests are experiencing rapid changes in climate that may favor deciduous-dominated systems, with important implications for global biogeochemical and energy cycles. However, aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) has experienced substantial defoliation from the aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella Cham., hereafter ALM) in Alaska, resulting in significant growth reductions. We conducted a tree-ring and Δ13C study to test the hypothesis that moisture limitation may have predisposed aspen to leaf miner damage. Contrary to our hypothesis, differences in climate-growth correlations between relatively severely and lightly affected trees were negligible during the pre-outbreak decades. Stands with greater summer precipitation had more limited ALM impact, however differences among models were small and multiple climate variables were suitable predictors of ALM impact. The strong negative relationship we detected between tree-ring Δ13C and basal area increment (BAI) suggested that interannual variation in Δ13C was driven primarily by variation in photosynthesis, limiting the utility of Δ13C as a tool to detect stomatal responses to moisture-limitation. Instead, we found that larger, faster-growing individuals on gentler slopes showed a stronger absolute reduction in BAI (pre-ALM BAIffpost-ALM BAI), but were similar in relative BAI reduction (pre-ALM BAI/post-ALM BAI), with smaller, slower growing trees. Older trees and stands with greater relative abundance of white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss] had greater relative ALM impact whereas slower growing trees on steeper slopes were less affected. The significant effect of white spruce abundance on ALM impact was likely due to favorable leaf miner overwintering habitat provided beneath white spruce trees, which can lead to increased leaf miner survival and thus greater reductions in aspen growth. Our results illustrate the subtle but complex biotic interaction between microclimate and pest physiology in determining ALM-induced aspen growth reductions, adding important nuance to a hypothesized increase in deciduous tree cover in Alaska's boreal forest. 1. Boreal forest soils contain large stocks of soil carbon (C) that may be sensitive to changes in climate and disturbance. Destablization of boreal forest soil C through changes in C inputs, belowground C pools and/or wildfire could feedback to accelerate rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. Additionally, increasing frequency of severe fires may be changing the dominant forest types and reshaping aboveground C stocks. 2. Although controls on ecosystem C pools have received considerable attention, many studies have been limited to locations near the road system, leading to uncertainty in current and future C stocks across boreal Alaska. Here, we leveraged 545 randomly selected and spatially balanced Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots across ~13.5 million hectares in interior Alaska to examine the factors governing soil and live tree C pools. 3. Forest type mediated the effects of mean summer air temperature and the probability of near-surface permafrost on soil C. Meanwhile, forest type, stand age and aspect were the primary drivers of live tree C. Overall, plots with a known history of wildfire during the past 70 years did not have significantly different soil C stocks than plots without a known history of fire, likely due to the historical predominance of low severity fires. 4. Where wildfire likely initiated a transition to deciduous trees (19% of plots), live tree and soil C pools were reduced by 16% and 20%, respectively. Ecosystem C likely recovered over time, as maturing deciduous stands rapidly gained C in live trees. Deciduous stands without a known fire had comparatively very large live tree C stocks, suggesting a significant change in the distribution of ecosystem C following severe fire. 5. Synthesis. Arctic Treeline is the transition from the boreal forest to the treeless tundra and may be determined by growing season temperatures. The physiological mechanisms involved in determining the relationship between the physical and biological environment and the location of treeline are not fully understood. In Northern Alaska, we studied the relationship between temperature and leaf respiration in 36 white spruce (Picea glauca) trees, sampling both the upper and lower canopy, to test two research hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that upper canopy leaves, which are more directly coupled to the atmosphere, will experience more challenging environmental conditions and thus have higher respiration rates to facilitate metabolic function. The second hypothesis is that saplings [stems that are 5–10cm DBH (diameter at breast height)] will have higher respiration rates than trees (stems ≥10cm DBH) since saplings represent the transition from seedlings growing in the more favorable aerodynamic boundary layer, to trees which are fully coupled to the atmosphere but of sufficient size to persist. Respiration did not change with canopy position, however respiration at 25°C was 42% higher in saplings compared to trees (3.43±0.19 vs. 2.41±0.14μmolm−2 s−1). Furthermore, there were significant differences in the temperature response of respiration, and seedlings reached their maximum respiration rates at 59°C, more than two degrees higher than trees. Our results demonstrate that the respiratory characteristics of white spruce saplings at treeline impose a significant carbon cost that may contribute to their lack of perseverance beyond treeline. In the absence of thermal acclimation, the rate of leaf respiration could increase by 57% by the end of the century, posing further challenges to the ecology of this massive ecotone. Treeline ecosystems are of great scientific interest to study the effects of limiting environmental conditions on tree growth. However, tree growth is multidimensional, with complex interactions between height and radial growth. In this study, we aimed to disentangle effects of height and climate on xylem anatomy of white spruce [ Picea glauca (Moench) Voss] at three treeline sites in Alaska; i.e., one warm and drought-limited, and two cold, temperature-limited. To analyze general growth differences between trees from different sites, we used data on annual ring width, diameter at breast height (DBH), and tree height. A representative subset of the samples was used to investigate xylem anatomical traits. We then used linear mixed-effects models to estimate the effects of height and climatic variables on our study traits. Our study showed that xylem anatomical traits in white spruce can be directly and indirectly controlled by environmental conditions: hydraulic-related traits seem to be mainly influenced by tree height, especially in the earlywood. Thus, they are indirectly driven by environmental conditions, through the environment's effects on tree height. Traits related to mechanical support show a direct response to environmental conditions, mainly temperature, especially in the latewood. These results highlight the importance of assessing tree growth in a multidimensional way by considering both direct and indirect effects of environmental forcing to better understand the complexity of tree growth responses to the environment.
