In recent years, research on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) has significantly increased. Numerous studies have analyzed demonstration projects, outlined scenarios, modeled pathways, or focused on CDR's national or international governance. However, regional case studies investigating the dynamics that may facilitate or impede the broader adoption of CDR methods in spatially explicit settings are critically absent. Understanding implementation contexts on the ground is vital, and comparing them across different removal methods is essential for effectively scaling up CDR. This paper aims to address this research gap by comparatively examining the development of biomass-based CDR in three regions of Germany. Taking an exploratory approach, we conducted surveys in these regions to gain insight into stakeholder perceptions of the following six CDR methods: forest management, agriculture and soil carbon, long-lasting building materials, rewetting of peatlands and paludiculture, biochar, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. In this article, we present the results of the stakeholder survey, which offers multiple perspectives that can shape future studies of regional implementation and yield policy-relevant guidance. Although our research primarily focuses on the regional level in Germany, it sheds light on various conflicts, uncertainties, and potentials that are likely to be relevant for the rollout of CDR in other countries. Afforestation and reforestation (AR) on marginal land are nature-based solutions to climate change. There is a gap in understanding the climate mitigation potential of protection and commercial AR with different combinations of forest plantation management and wood utilization pathways. Here, we fill the gap using a dynamic, multiscale life cycle assessment to estimate one-century greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation delivered by (both traditional and innovative) commercial and protection AR with different planting density and thinning regimes on marginal land in the southeastern United States. We found that innovative commercial AR generally mitigates more GHGs across 100 y (3.73 to 4.15 Giga tonnes of CO2 equivalent (Gt CO2e)) through cross-laminated timber (CLT) and biochar than protection AR (3.35 to 3.69 Gt CO2e) and commercial AR with traditional lumber production (3.17 to 3.51 Gt CO2e), especially in moderately cooler and dryer regions in this study with higher forest carbon yield, soil clay content, and CLT substitution. In a shorter timeframe (=50 y), protection AR is likely to deliver higher GHG mitigation. On average, for the same wood product, low-density plantations without thinning and high-density plantations with thinning mitigate more life cycle GHGs and result in higher carbon stock than that of low-density with thinning plantations. Commercial AR increases the carbon stock of standing plantations, wood products, and biochar, but the increases have uneven spatial distributions. Georgia (0.38 Gt C), Alabama (0.28 Gt C), and North Carolina (0.13 Gt C) have the largest carbon stock increases that can be prioritized for innovative commercial AR projects on marginal land. Vachellia nilotica (L.) P.J.H. Hurther & Mabb. and Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. are two of the most important multipurpose agroforestry tree species of the Indian sub-continent, but their growth in saline soils is greatly reduced. Recently, organic amendments have showed the potential to increase plant growth in salt-affected soils; however, the influence of using these amendments for growing the above-mentioned tree species under saline conditions is not yet quantified. Therefore, an experiment was devised to analyze the interactive effects of organic amendments in saline soils on the growth of V. nilotica and D. sissoo. Under controlled conditions, a pot experiment was conducted in sandy loam saline soils (EC = 20.5 dSm−1). Organic amendments from four diverse sources: farmyard manure (FYM), poultry manure (PM), slurry (SL), and farmyard manure biochar (FYMB) were employed in this study. At the harvesting time, data regarding morphological, physiological, ionic, and biochemical parameters were obtained. The current study results indicated that both tree species reacted differently, but positively, to diverse applied amendments. The maximum increment in total above-ground biomass, total below-ground biomass, and shoot length for V. nilotica (163.8%, 116.3%, and 68.2%, respectively) was observed in FYM amended soils, while the maximum increment for D. sissoo (128%, 86%, and 107%, respectively) was observed in FYMB amended soils, as compared to control. Minimum plant growth of both species was observed in untreated soils (saline soils). Likewise, the maximum potassium ion and minimum sodium ion concentrations were present in the root and shoots of plants (both species) treated with FYMB. The use of organic amendments resulted in decreased concentrations of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, and increased concentrations of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, POD, and CAT. Moreover, higher photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance were observed in the plants grown in amended soils. Establishing artificial sand-fixing shrubs is a key measure to curb dune flow and drive changes in the soil stocks and cycling of carbon and nitrogen. But our understanding of these dynamics across years of sand-fixing afforestation and the factors influencing them remains inadequate, making it hard to accurately assess its capacity to sequester carbon. To fill that knowledge gap, this study investigated soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (STN) stocks in Mu Us Desert under artificial sand-fixing shrub stands of different ages (10, 30, 50, and 70 years old) vis-à-vis a mobile sand dune, to determine whether Caragana korshinskii afforestation improved stock characteristics and whether SOC and STN stocks were correlated during the restoration processes. The results showed that the pattern observed is consistent with an increase over time in the stocks of both SOC and STN. At 10, 30, 50, and 70 years, these stocks were found to be 1.8, 2.3, 3.2, and 5.5 times higher for SOC, and 1.3, 1.6, 2.1, and 2.7 times higher for STN, respectively, than those of the control (mobile sand) dune. Stocks of SOC and STN mainly increased significantly in the 0–10 cm soil layer. The SOC stock was correlated positively with the STN stock as well as the C:N ratio. The slope of the regression for the C:N ratio against stand age was positive, increasing slightly faster with afforestation age. Additionally, our findings suggest that during the establishment of artificial stands of shrubs, the size of the STN stock did not expand as fast as the SOC stock, resulting in an asynchronous N supply and demand that likely limits the accumulation of soil organic matter. Background: In the Himalayan region, fuelwood serves as a critical energy source for rural communities. Being vital for meeting energy needs, fuelwood combustion is a source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and, consequently, global warming, as well as deforestation and public health damage. Therefore, quantifying fuelwood consumption patterns and its associated CO2 emissions is essential to understand the environmental impact and promote sustainable resource management. Methods: This research conducts an evaluation of fuelwood burning patterns and the associated CO2 emissions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), situated within the western Himalayan region. The study entails an extensive survey of 24 villages representing 240 households, equally distributed between the subtropical and temperate regions, each comprising 120 households. Data collection was executed through a combination of direct queries and the weight survey method, following standard protocols. Results: In the study area, the mean annual fuelwood comsumption per household amounts to 24.28 ± 3.1 Mg (or 3.195 ± 1 Mg capita−1). A variance was observed between subtropical and temperate zones, with the latter exhibiting higher consumption rates. The consequential CO2 emissions were assessed as 41.88 ± 4.5 Mg per household (5.51 ± 0.6 Mg capita−1). On a daily basis, households consumed an average of 66.52 ± 6.4 kg of fuelwood (8.75 ± 1.5 kg capita−1), resulting in a daily CO2 release rate of 114.745 ± 8.6 kg (15.095 ± 2 kg capita−1). The findings unveiled seasonal variations, indicating increased fuelwood consumption and emissions during the winter season. Statistical analysis shed light on the significance of altitude and family size in shaping the patterns of fuelwood use. Conclusions: The results revealed the importance of prioritizing forest conservation and strategically implementing sustainable practices, including reforestation, afforestation, responsible harvesting, and actively promoting sustainable fuel sources. This research highlights the vital role of well-designed policies focused on preserving ecosystems and improving energy management. Afforestation initiatives are increasingly important in addressing global environmental challenges. This study focuses on the Billion Tree Afforestation Project in Pakistan and investigates the survival and growth of multipurpose species planted under the project in the Dera Ismail Khan Forest Division through a strati$ed random sampling technique. A total of 88 sample plots of 0.1 ha size were taken for 10 plantation sites extended over an area of 461.5 ha. Results showed that the average pit density was 1090 pits/ha, while the regeneration was recorded as 695 individuals/ha. Regarding survival rate, all plantation sites showed the best performance, mostly above 90%. Major species such as Eucalyptus camaldulensis have the highest composition (78%), followed by Acacia nilotica with 14%, while Dalbergia sissoo has the lowest percentage of 7%. The highest growth performance was exhibited by Dalbergia sissoo and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Dalbergia sissoo attained an average girth of 19 cm and a height of 2.8 m. Eucalyptus camaldulensis attained a mean girth of 16.1 cm and 19.3 cm at 24 months and 27 months, respectively, whereas the mean height at 24 months and 27 months was 2.93 m and 2.8 m, respectively. Furthermore, scatterplots were developed for growth rate analysis between height and girth for all measured individual trees and mean values. The highest correlation was shown by Acacia nilotica with 0.81 and 0.99 coe%cient of determination (R²) for overall individual values and mean values. Zinc is an essential element for plant nutrition, but it may cause toxicity depending on its bioavailability and potential transformation in soil. In vineyard soils, high concentrations of Zn are usually found, mainly due to agricultural practices. However, a great abandonment of vineyards has recently occurred, leading to changes in the total and bioavailable Zn concentrations, as well as Zn fractionation. We analyzed Zn concentrations (total, ZnT, and bioavailable, ZnED) and fractionation in the soil of three paired sites (PM, PT, and AR) up to depths of 50 cm in active and adjacent abandoned vineyards that were already transformed into forests. The ZnT averaged at 210 mg kg−1 among all studied vineyards. The results showed changes in the vertical pattern ZnT concentrations after vineyard abandonment at the PM and PT sites, while at the AR site, no great variation occurred. The ZnED (mean values = 7 mg kg−1) decreased after abandonment at PM and AR in the uppermost surface layers, while it increased in the top 10 cm at the PT site, reaching up to 60 mg kg−1. Regarding Zn fractionation in active vineyards, the residual fraction (ZnR) was the most abundant, followed by Zn bound to crystalline Fe and Al oxy-hydroxides (ZnC) and Zn bound to soil organic matter (ZnOM). After abandonment, the ZnR slightly increased and the ZnC slightly decreased at the PM and AR sites at all depths, while the ZnOM showed a noticeable variation in the uppermost 10 cm of the PT site. These results suggest that the soil organic matter that is provided during afforestation may play an important role in Zn fractionation and mobilization, depending on its humification degree and chemical stability. Zn mobilization could result in a positive nutrient supply for plants, but caution must be taken, since an excess of Zn could cause toxicity in long-term abandoned vineyards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, NETs can have wide-ranging effects on land and water availability, food production, and biodiversity. The deployment of NETs will also depend on regional and national circumstances, technology availability, and decarbonization strategies. Process integration (PI) can be the basis for decision support models for the selection, planning, and optimization of the large-scale implementation of NETs. This paper reviews the literature and maps the role of PI in NETs deployment. Techniques such as mathematical programming, pinch analysis (PA), process graphs (P-graphs), are powerful methods for planning NET systems under resource or footprint constraints. Other methods such as multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), marginal abatement cost curves, causality maps, and machine learning (ML) are also discussed. Current literature focuses mainly on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and afforestation/reforestation (AR), but other NETs need to be integrated into future models for large-scale decarbonization. Tropical forests are among the most productive and vulnerable ecosystems in the planet. Several global forestation programs are aiming to plant millions of trees in tropical regions in the future decade. Mycorrhizal associations are known to largely influence forest soil carbon (C) stocks. However, to date, little is known on whether and how different tree mycorrhizal types affect soil respiration (Rs) and C stocks in tropical forests. In this study, we used a three-decade tropical common garden experiment, with three arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and three ectomycorrhizal (EM) monocultures, to investigate the impacts of tree mycorrhizal type on Rs and soil C stocks. Associating biotic (e.g. root biomass, litter dynamic, soil microbes) and abiotic factors (e.g. microclimate) were also measured. Our results showed that AM stands supported significantly higher Rs and soil C stock, litter turnover rate and fine root biomass than EM stands. Further statistical analysis displayed that tree mycorrhizal type was the most important factor in regulating Rs and soil C stock compared with other biotic or abiotic factors. Moreover, we found that mycorrhizal type directly and indirectly affected Rs and soil C stocks via fine root biomass and litter dynamic, i.e. litter production, litter standing crop and litter turnover rate. Our findings highlight important effects of tree mycorrhizal type on forest C cycle, suggesting that planting AM tree species could contribute to promotion of soil C stock in tropical ecosystems. Food systems (FSs) emit ~ 20 GtCO2e/y (~ 35% of global greenhouse gas emissions). This level tends to raise given the expected increases in food demands, which may threaten global climate targets. Through a rapid assessment, evaluating 60+ scenarios based on existing low-emission and carbon sequestration practices, we estimate that intensifying FSs could reduce its emissions from 21.4 to − 2.0 GtCO2e/y and address increasing food demands without relying on carbon offsets (e.g., related to afforestation and reforestation programs). However, given historical trends and regional contexts, a more diverse portfolio of practices, including diet shifts and new-horizon technologies, will be needed to increase the feasibility of achieving net-zero FSs. One likely pathway consists of implementing practices that shift food production to the 30th-percentile of least emission-intensive FSs (~ 45% emissions reduction), sequester carbon at 50% of its potential (~ 5 GtCO2e/y) and adopt diet shifts and new-horizon technologies (~ 6 GtCO2e/y). For a successful transition to happen, the global FSs would, in the next decade (2020s), need to implement cost-effective mitigation practices and technologies, supported by improvements in countries' governance and technical assistance, innovative financial mechanisms and research focused on making affordable technologies in the following two decades (2030–2050). • The policy discourse on negative emissions is rapidly gaining momentum. • A discursive shift towards deployment is evident. • BECCS and afforestation are the most prominent land-based technologies in the discourse. • Most actors are based in the Global North; 61% refer to Global South in statements. • 116 policy documents from 2013 to 2019 were manually coded and analyzed. Negative emissions are increasingly seen as a policy option to limit climate change. However, the most readily available technologies that could deliver negative emissions require, if deployed at scale, large amounts of land, with huge risks for livelihoods and the environment. This land is often assumed to be in the Global South. This article analyzes the nascent policy discourse on negative emissions by assessing 116 policy documents by 97 organizations with a focus on land-based technologies (afforestation and reforestation, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, biochar, soil carbon sequestration). We conclude that this policy discourse is largely centered in the Global North (mostly in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany), with only five organizations directly linked to the Global South. 61% of the organizations in our sample, however, somehow refer to the Global South in their contributions, with nongovernmental organizations being most strongly focused on the role of the Global South and in particular the risks for vulnerable countries. While the earlier policy discourse on negative emissions was linked to a more general "geoengineering" discourse, this link has loosened in the last years. Overall, in the documents that we studied, negative emissions technologies seem to become more accepted, and parts of the discourse shift towards deployment. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage seems more often associated with risks if compared to other land-based negative emissions technologies, especially with a view to the Global South. Anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) contribute to global warming. Limiting temperature rise requires negative emission techniques to retract the emitted CO2 from the atmosphere. Through photosynthesis, ecosystems naturally sequester and store carbon. Enhancing these processes forms the basis of biological sequestration strategies. Ecosystems are a sink of atmospheric CO2 and significantly impact the global carbon cycle. The fixed carbon is converted into biomass, a portion of which enters the soil carbon pool and can be sequestered for millennia. The formation of stable soil organic carbon (SOC) depends on land use, management practices, and the use of amendments. Employing best management practices and carbon boosting approaches such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry, biochar, afforestation, and restoration of wetlands can improve SOC stocks and create a positive soil carbon budget, especially in degraded ecosystems. . Carbon fixation by plants and microbes is fundamental to biological sequestration. Regulating the properties and expression of the enzymes involved and introducing novel pathways for carbon capture can enhance carbon fixation efficiency and positively affect yield. This review discusses biological carbon sequestration strategies highlighting the recent findings in the effects and potential of soil carbon boosting approaches in carbon mitigation and the prospects of genetic engineering in enhancing carbon fixation.

A harsh environment, slow tree growth, nutrient deficiencies, and competition between trees and weeds can impede forest establishment on reclaimed lands. We investigated the effects of torrefied wood chips (TWC) and vermicompost (VC) soil amendments on the growth of Populus euramericana Guinier, weed biomass, and soil chemical properties on reclaimed land in Saemangeum. The 2.5 Mg ha−1 and 5.0 Mg ha−1 TWC had a similar effect on tree diameter and height growth (i.e., 2.5 = 5.0 > 0 TWC) and tended to have similar, higher effect on the total biomass of P. euramericana than the 0 Mg ha−1. The 2.5 Mg ha−1 TWC resulted in a significantly larger root biomass than the 5.0 Mg ha−1 TWC. The weed biomass was significantly larger at the 2.7 Mg ha−1 VC (i.e., 730.5–810.5 g m−2) than the control (605.1–610.6 g m−2), but VC alone was not effective for tree growth and soil amelioration. The TWC had no effect on weed biomass. Thus, the TWC and VC had contrasting effects on tree growth and weed biomass when they were used as soil amendments on salt-affected reclaimed land. VC application may promote weed proliferation, whereas TWC application may potentially increase the growth of P. euramericana and control weed growth on reclaimed lands. Our results enhance the existing knowledge on tree and weed responses to torrefied wood chips and vermicompost amendments for the sustainable management of salt-affected reclaimed lands. Afforestation with trees and shrubs around cropland can effectively decrease soil degradation and avoid sand storms, but subsequent modification of litter quality accelerates the degradation of native organic matter via the soil priming effect (PE). Although carbon accumulation in agricultural soils after afforestation was widely studied, little is known about the extent to which soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization is induced by complex residue input in agro-forest-grass composite ecosystems. Here, we mixed corn field soil and litter of afforestation tree and shrub species together in a micro-environment to quantify the effects of litter-mixture input on farmland soil priming associated with afforestation. Additionally, we studied the responses of bacterial and fungal species to litter chemistry, with the aim to identify the litter and microbial driver of soil priming. The results showed that soil priming was accelerated by different litter addition which varied from 24 to 74% of SOC mineralization, suggesting that priming intensity was relatively flexible and highly affected by litter quality. We also find that the macro-chemistry (including litter carbon, nitrogen, lignin, and cellulose) directly affects priming intensity, while micro-chemistry (including litter soluble sugar, water-soluble phenol, methanol-soluble phenol, and condensed tannin) indirectly influences priming via alteration to dominant bacterial taxa. The stepwise regression analysis suggested that litter nitrogen and cellulose were the critical litter drivers to soil priming (r 2 = 0.279), and the combination of bacterial phylum Proteobacteria , Firmicutes , Bacteroidetes , Acidobacteria , and fungal taxa Eurotiomycetes was a great model to explain the priming intensity (r 2 = 0.407). Wildfires on degraded grasslands cause extensive soil erosion and cause environmental and economic damage worldwide. We conducted fertilizer, lime, and mulch trials to improve growth of trees planted in acid soils in degraded grasslands on the Micronesian islands of Guam, Rota, and Yap. Fertilizer application had no effect on height growth of Acacia auriculiformis seedlings on a Mollisol on Guam while lime application had a small but significant positive effect on height growth. Fertilizer application had a significant positive effect on height growth of Acacia confusa seedlings planted on an Oxisol on Rota but lime had no effect. Mulch application increased height growth of Swietenia macrophylla seedlings planted on an Oxisol on Yap but lime application had no effect. Collaboration between university researchers and local forestry agencies can improve reforestation success, but researchers need to consider local capabilities and local knowledge. Simple Summary: Drought is a global climatic phenomenon and one of the main factors that negatively affect plant growth. Karst is a unique type of ecosystem where ecological degradation is becoming more and more serious due to the aggravation of global drought. Vegetation restoration is an effective method for preventing ecological degradation in Karst ecosystems. Cinnamomum migao is selected as the tree species for vegetation restoration, because it is a unique, fast-growing medicinal plant of Southwest China that only thrives in Karst regions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are an important component of the soil biota in ecosystems and alleviate drought stress in plants by forming a mutualistic symbiosis. Most previous studies just considered the effects of AMF species on drought resistance but did not evaluate different inoculation methods. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of different AMF resulting from the use of different inoculation methods on the growth and drought resistance of C. migao seedlings in Karst soil. The findings of this study will improve the success rate of reforestation programs in Karst ecosystems through the utilization of these important microorganisms. Drought stress is one of the greatest obstacles affecting field crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions, and its severity and frequency are expected to increase due to human-induced changes to the environment and climate. Drought has led to rocky desertification in Karst regions. Cinnamomum migao is a unique, fast-growing medicinal plant of Southwest China that only thrives in Karst regions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) symbiosis alleviates drought stress in plants; however, establishment and function of the symbiotic interaction between AMF host plant in relation to the inoculation method remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of AMF species (Glomus etunicatum and Funneliformis mosseae) and two inoculation methods (seed vs. seedling inoculation) under drought stress on C. migao seedlings, and quantified mycorrhizal colonization, AMF spore density, root vigor, relative water content, C. migao growth, antioxidant enzyme activities, and osmotic adjustment. Inoculation with AMF (G. etunicatum and F. mosseae) positively affected the growth and root vigor of Cinnamomum migao under drought stress, regardless of the inoculation method. Additionally, both AMF species markedly upregulated antioxidant enzyme activities and osmotic adjustment substances, regardless of the inoculation method. Our results showed that the collective stimulatory effect of G. etunicatum is more efficient than that of F. mosseae. AMF application could promote afforestation with C. migao to prevent rocky desertification in Karst regions where water is the greatest limiting factor on plant growth and yield.
