Patients with schizophrenia suffer from physical health conditions, culminating in reduced physical functioning with enormous costs for patients and society. Although aerobic endurance and skeletal muscle strength, typically reduced in this population, relate to cognition and function, no study has explored their respective contributions to performance of functional skills and everyday tasks. In a cross-sectional study, 48 outpatients (28/20 men/women; 35 ± 11(SD) years) with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (ICD-10; F20–25) were administered the UCSD Performance-based Skills Assessment-Brief (UPSA-B; functional skills), Specific Level of Functioning (SLOF; functional performance) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome (PANSS) scale. Peak oxygen uptake (V̇O 2peak) was assessed along with leg press maximal muscle strength (1RM) and mechanical power. UPSA-B performance was associated with V̇O 2peak (r = 0.28, p < 0.05), accounting for 8 % (p < 0.05) of shared variance, but was unrelated to 1RM and mechanical power. The SLOF physical functioning domain was associated with V̇O 2peak (r = 0.30, p < 0.05) and 1RM (r = 0.24,p < 0.05), while SLOF personal care (r = 0.27,p < 0.05) and activities (r = 0.30,p < 0.05) were related only to V̇O 2peak. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that while V̇O 2peak and age combined to account for 20 % (p < 0.05) of the variance in physical functioning, the contribution of 1RM was eliminated after adjusting for age. V̇O 2peak and negative symptoms combined predicted 24 % and 35 % of the variance in personal care and activities, respectively. UPSA-B scores did not add to the prediction of SLOF scores. Although V̇O 2peak and 1RM both relate to functional outcomes, the combination of V̇O 2peak , age, and negative symptoms exert the greatest detrimental influence on functional performance beyond skills deficits. Many older adults are discharged from skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) at functional levels below those needed for safe, independent home and community mobility. There is limited evidence explaining this insufficient recovery. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine predictors of physical function change following SNF rehabilitation. Secondary analysis of a prospective observational cohort study. Across 4 SNFs, data were collected from 698 adults admitted for physical rehabilitation following an acute hospitalization. Physical function recovery was evaluated as change from admission to discharge in Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) scores (N = 698) and gait speed (n = 444). Demographic and clinical characteristics collected at admission served as potential predictors of physical function change. Following imputation, a standardized model selection estimator was calculated for predictors per physical function outcome. Predictor estimates and 95% CIs were calculated for each outcome model. Higher cognitive scores [standardized β (β STD) = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.0004, 0.20] and higher activities of daily living (ADL) independence at admission (β STD = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.34) predicted greater SPPB change; higher SPPB scores at admission (β STD = −0.26, 95% CI: −0.35, −0.14) predicted smaller SPPB change. Higher ADL independence at admission (β STD = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.37) predicted greater gait speed change; faster gait speed at admission (β STD = −0.30, 95% CI: −0.44, −0.15) predicted smaller gait speed change. Admission cognition, ADL independence, and physical function predicted physical function change following post-hospitalization rehabilitation. Inverse findings for admission physical function and ADL independence predictors suggest independence with ADL is not necessarily aligned with mobility-related function. This study aimed to investigate the association between combinations of sarcopenia criteria by the Asian Working Group of Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 guideline and incident adverse health outcomes. Longitudinal analyses of a cohort study. We conducted prospective 2-year follow-up analyses (N = 1959) among community-dwelling older adults enrolled in the nationwide Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS). From the KFACS, 1959 older adults (52.8% women; mean age = 75.9 ± 3.9 years) who underwent assessments for appendicular skeletal mass using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, handgrip strength, usual gait speed, 5-times sit-to-stand test, and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) at baseline were included. Participants with each adverse health outcome [mobility disability, falls, and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disabilities] at baseline were excluded for each corresponding analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine whether sarcopenia defined by different diagnostic criteria was associated with incident adverse health outcomes after 2 years. A total of 444 participants (22.7%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia as defined by AWGS 2019. In the multivariable analysis, sarcopenia defined as both low muscle mass and low physical performance increased the risk of mobility disability (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.35-3.38) and falls (1.74, 95% CI 1.21-2.49). Only the criterion defined as both low muscle mass and physical performance using the SPPB increased the risk of falls with fracture (2.53, 95% CI 1.01-6.35) and IADL disabilities (2.77, 95% CI 1.21-6.33). However, sarcopenia defined as both low muscle mass and low hand grip strength showed no associations with the incidence of any of the adverse health outcomes. Our study suggests that the predictive value of adverse health outcomes for community-dwelling older adults is better when diagnosed with sarcopenia based on low muscle mass and physical performance. Furthermore, using the SPPB as a diagnostic tool for low physical performance may improve the predictive validity for falls with fracture and IADL disability. • This is the first prospective study of functional decline across glycemic transitions. • A transition from normal to diabetes was associated with an accelerated concomitant decline in cognition and functioning. • Associations with prediabetes were not observed. Evidence about the decline of cognition and physical function across glycemic status (normoglycemia, prediabetes, and diabetes) is inconsistent. We evaluated longitudinal changes in cognition and physical function according to glycemic status and also different glycemic transitions. Population-based cohort study. 9307 participants (mean age 59.7 years, 53.7 % women) were included from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011–2018). Global cognition (assessed by orientation, memory, and executive function) and physical function (calculated as the sum of impaired basic and instrumental activities of daily living) were assessed in each wave. The glycemic status was assessed in waves 2011 and 2015. Diabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L, HbA1c ≥6.5 %, self-reported diabetes, or glucose-lowering medication use. Prediabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose 5.6–6.9 mmol/L or an HbA1c of 5.7–6.4 %. Compared with normoglycemia, baseline diabetes was associated with a faster decline in orientation (−0.018 SD/year, 95%CI -0.032, −0.004) and a faster increase in physical function score (0.082 /year, 95%CI 0.038, 0.126). We did not observe any effect of prediabetes on the changing rate of cognition and physical function. Progression from normoglycemia to diabetes between waves 2011 and 2015 was associated with a significantly faster decline in global cognition, memory, executive function, and physical function compared with stable normoglycemia. Baseline diabetes was associated with accelerated decline of cognition and physical function. Background: This study aimed to examine the associations of plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, an indicator of oxidative stress, with disability in activities of daily living (ADL) and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults.Methods: We used cross-sectional data of 2223 older adults (≥65 years, including 1505 adults≥80 years) from the 2011/2012 main survey of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and the 2012 biomarker sub-study. Plasma SOD activity was assessed by the T-SOD assay kit based on the hydroxylamine method. Outcomes included ADL disability and disability in three objective physical tasks (standing up from a chair, picking up a book from the floor, and turning around 360°). Logistic regression models were used to examine the associations of plasma SOD activity with outcomes.Results: After controlling for age and sex, compared with participants in the lowest quartile group of SOD activity, those in the highest quartile group had 31% lower odds of ADL disability (odds ratio [OR]: 0.69; 95%CI: 0.48, 0.98); 60% lower odds of disability in standing up from a chair (OR: 0.40; 95%CI: 0.25, 0.63); and 57% lower odds of disability in picking up a book from a floor (OR: 0.43; 95%CI: 0.28, 0.65). The results did not change substantially after controlling for additional covariates. • Distinct trajectories exist for physical activity and BMI from middle to older age. • Trajectories in physical activity included an emergent physical activity group. • Stable-high and emergent physical activity groups had better later-life function. • Benefits of physical activity on function existed across different BMI trajectories. We examined the effects of physical activity (PA) and body mass index (BMI) longitudinal patterns (trajectories) on subjective measures of mobility, function, and disability in adults and assessed whether effects of PA trajectories on function varied due to BMI. Group-based trajectory analyses were used to determine patterns of change in PA and BMI using data from the Health and Retirement Study 1931–1941 birth cohort (n = 10,507). Physical function was assessed by Mobility Limitations (0–5 scale) and Large Muscle Function (0–4 scale) Indexes, as well as with score for activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), with higher scores being worse. Our analyses estimated four distinct PA trajectories: decreasing, (2) fluctuating, (3) stable high, and (4) emergent (previously low/sedentary with increased PA over the study period). Worse mobility limitations, large muscle function, ADLs, and IADLs were associated with Decreasing and Fluctuating PA groups. Better outcomes were associated with Emergent and Stable High PA groups. The five BMI trajectories were stable normal/overweight, modest decreasing, fluctuating, steep decreasing, and increasing. No significant interaction existed between PA and BMI trajectories for Mobility Limitations (P = 0.577), Large Muscle Function (P = 0.511), ADLs (P = 0.600), and IADLs (P = 0.152). According to a biopsychosocial approach to health and disability, participation at home and functional skills are important components of the functioning. Therefore, knowledge about interactions between these components allows targeting specific interventions. This study investigated whether participation opportunities (frequency and involvement) for children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) in a realistic environment at their own home are associated with the functional skills related to the domains of Daily Activities, Mobility, Social/Cognitive and Responsibility. This was an observational study. Forty-eight children/adolescents with DS participated (mean age: 10.73±3.43; n=27 female). They were evaluated using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY) home environment setting (raw frequency and engagement scores) and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory speedy version (PEDI-CAT-SV) (continuous score). Significant and positive correlations were found between the frequency of participation at home with Daily Activities (ro =.320), Social/Cognitive (ro =.423) and Responsibility (ro =.455). For involvement, significant and positive correlations were found with Daily Activities (ro =.297), Social/Cognitive (ro =.380) and Responsibility (ro =.380). For the PEDI-CAT-SV Mobility , no significant correlation was found. Higher frequency and involvement of participation at home are associated with greater functional skills assessed, except for Mobility. Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether responses to Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Short Form v2.0 - Physical Function 8c (PROMIS PF8c) items differed when the use of a 7-day recall period was compared with no specified recall period.Methods: Using a within-subject design, we surveyed 1810 individuals from the US general population, administering PROMIS PF8c at survey beginning and end. The order of measure presentation was randomly assigned. We calculated recall difference scores (RDSs) as no recall score minus 7-day recall score using both item response theory-based T scores and raw summed scores. We examined the distribution and created Bland-Altman plots for both RDSTscore and RDSRaw. We also calculated correlations between no recall versus 7-day recall T score and raw scores. Finally, we determined whether differences in no recall versus 7-day recall scores were associated with patient-reported PF.Results: RDSTscore and RDSRaw had means (root mean square differences) of 0.00 (5.43) and -0.04 (3.79), respectively. The vast majority (%) of RDSTscore and RDSRaw values fell between the Bland-Altman limits of agreement (-10.65 to 10.66 and -7.46 to 7.38, respectively). Pearson's correlations between no recall and 7-day recall for T scores and raw scores were 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. Effect sizes for mean RDSTscore and RDSRaw compared across level of Eastern Oncology Cooperative Group performance status, patient global impression of PF severity, and single PF items were near 0.Conclusions: We did not find any significant recall period effect on PF8c responses. • This study provides the latest evidence on the level of life space mobility of community elderly people. • The life space mobility of community elderly people is at a moderate level globally, with 42% of them living in a state of restricted life space. • The level of life space mobility among community elderly people gradually achieved stability after 2017. • South America, females and earlier survey years have a lower level of LSM. Multiple countries have conducted surveys on the level of life space mobility for community-dwelling elderly through the Life-Space Assessment, the results vary greatly, from 41.7 to 88.6. However, there is no meta-analysis on the current situation of community-dwelling elderly life space mobility. To systematically assess the global level of life space mobility for community-dwelling elderly, to identify potential covariates such as geographical regions, survey years, gender, and age that contribute to the heterogeneity between the studies, and to identify the dynamic trend based on survey years. Systematic review and meta-analysis. Two reviewers searched the following 8 electronic bibliographic databases from inception until May 28, 2023: PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Chinese Biomedical Database, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, WanFang, and Weipu Database. This review was conducted using the Stata 14.1 and R 4.3.1. The Cochrane's Q statistical and I2 index were used to test for heterogenicity and assess the degree of heterogenicity, respectively. Studies were appraised using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality tool, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for the quality of cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, respectively. A total of 29 studies were selected from databases and reference lists. The pooled score of Life-Space Assessment was 66.84 (95% CI: 63.30–70.39) and the prevalence of restricted life space was 42% (95% CI: 0.27–0.57). The geographical regions, survey years, gender were found to be a significant covariate of the pooled score of life space mobility estimate in the subgroup analysis. The mean score of Life-Space Assessment gradually achieved stability after 2017. The life space mobility of community-dwelling elderly in the global is at a moderate level, with 42% of them experiencing restricted life space. South America, females and earlier survey years have a lower level of life space mobility. The first goal of this study was to explore associations between functional dependence levels during activities of daily living (eg, functional mobility, eating, and toileting) before COVID-19 and presence of COVID-19 symptoms (eg, fever, dehydration, lethargy, and shortness of breath) during illness. The second goal of this study was to explore associations between presence of specific COVID-19 symptoms and level of functional decline from before to after illness. Retrospective cohort study. A total of 375 residents at a single skilled nursing facility in New York City. Data were extracted from the Minimum Data Set 3.0 and chart reviews. Multiple linear regressions analyzed relationships between baseline functional dependence in eating, functional mobility, and toileting and presence of dehydration, lethargy, shortness of breath, and fever. Ordinal linear regressions analyzed associations between COVID-19 symptom presence and changes in functional dependence from before to after illness. Pre–COVID-19 eating dependence was significantly associated with dehydration during COVID-19. Dehydration during COVID-19 was significantly associated with greater functional declines in functional mobility from before to after illness. Shortness of breath was significantly associated with increased functional declines in eating and functional mobility. Patients with COVID-19 should be monitored for shortness of breath and dehydration, as these symptoms are associated with functional decline. Individuals experiencing functional decline before COVID-19 onset are especially vulnerable to these symptoms. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a very disabling disease. Pathologically, it is characterized by the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain that results in neurodegeneration. Its clinical manifestations include progressive memory impairment, language decline and difficulty in carrying out activities of daily living (ADL). The disease is managed using interventions such as pharmacological interventions and aerobic exercise. Use of aerobic exercise has shown some promises in reducing the risk of developing AD, and improving cognitive function and the ability to carry out both basic and instrumental ADL. Although, the mechanisms through which aerobic exercise improves AD are poorly understood, improvement in vascular function, brain glucose metabolism and cardiorespiratory fitness, increase in antioxidant capacity and haemoglobin level, amelioration of immune-related and inflammatory responses, modulation of concentration of circulating Neurotrophins and peptides and decrease in concentration of tau protein and cortisol level among others seem to be the possible mechanisms. Therefore, understanding these mechanisms is important to help characterize the dose and the nature of the aerobic exercise to be given. In addition, they may also help in finding ways to optimize other interventions such as the pharmacological interventions. To examine whether facility-reported staff shortages and total staff levels were independently associated with changes in nursing home (NH) outcomes in 2020. Longitudinal cohort study. A total of 8466 NHs with staffing and outcome data. This study used NH COVID-19 Public File (2020), Nursing Home Compare (2019-2020), and Payroll-Based Journal data (2019-2020). Outcome measures included the percentage of long-stay residents in a facility with declines in activities in daily living (ADLs), decreases in mobility, weight loss, and pressure ulcers in 2020 Q2, 2020 Q3, and 2020 Q4. Independent variables were whether NHs reported any shortage of aides or licensed nurses and total staff hours per resident day (HPRD). Separate 2-level (NH, state) Hierarchical Generalized Linear Mixed models examined the association of facility-reported shortages and staff hours with key NH resident outcomes, controlling for NH characteristics and COVID-19 infections. The weekly percentage of NHs reporting any staff shortage averaged 20%. Total staff HPRD increased slightly from 3.7 in 2019 to 3.8 in 2020. Health outcomes were stable during 2019 and 2020 Q1 but worsened substantially starting in 2020 Q2. For example, the percentage of residents with mobility loss increased from 16.2% in 2020 Q1 to 27.9% in 2020 Q4. Facility-reported staff shortages were associated with an increase in the proportion of residents with an ADL decline (0.54 percentage points), mobility loss (0.80 percentage points), weight loss (0.22 percentage points), and pressure ulcers (0.22 percentage points) (all P <.01). Total staff HPRD was not associated with changes in any outcomes (all P >.05). NHs reported worsened health outcomes among long-stay residents in 2020, with worse outcomes found among facilities that reported staff shortages but not among those with lower total staff levels. Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare, debilitating disease for which there are no approved pharmacological interventions. As the disease progresses, patients lose upper limb function and mobility, which results in a decrease in the ability to perform activities of daily living and independence; patients often live with chronic pain. This systematic literature review (SLR) assessed the evidence base in FSHD.The SLR was conducted by searching PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Reviews databases for studies reporting on FSHD, with no limits on interventions, comparators, outcomes, study design or date of publication. In addition, three conferences not indexed in EMBASE were hand searched (limit of last three years). Screening was performed two independent researchers at both the title and abstracts and full text review stage and articles were categorized as: pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments; outcome measures and validation; humanistic burden and patient reported outcomes; economic burden; disease classification; diagnosis; and guidelines. A total of 2,211 full texts and 754 conference abstracts were identified for review with 153 full texts and 101 conference abstracts included. The most reported topic among full texts was pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments (n=52), with outcome measures and validation being the second most reported topic (n=32). Among conference abstracts, the most reported study topic was outcome measures and validation (n=43), with disease classification second (n=20). FSHD research interests mainly include pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, followed by the validation of outcome measures for use in research. Research efforts on minimizing the impact of the debilitating and progressive nature of FSHD should continue until a treatment is approved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Frailty, characterized by a loss of strength, endurance, physical ability, and cognitive function, is prevalent in a lung transplant population. Frailty is associated with death or delisting before transplant and may be associated with post-transplant mortality. Lung transplant candidates have impairments in muscle function including reduced muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. The aim of this work is to develop a physical therapy protocol to evaluate physical frailty and performance, including respiratory and peripheral muscle strength; gait speed; fall risk; and perceived dyspnea in LTX candidates. In this single center prospective study, LTX candidates ≥40 years of age were included. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), respiratory muscle strength (maximal inspiratory pressure), peripheral muscle strength (handgrip and quadriceps isometric strength), gait speed (normal gait speed over 4 meters), chair stand test, Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale and Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale were evaluated as a baseline assessment. Of the 29 enrolled recipients (58% female, age 61±6.8 years), 8 subjects were frail (SPBB ≤7), 2 were pre-frail (SPBB 8-9) and 19 were non-frail (SPBB ≥10) at listing. Inspiratory muscle weakness as defined by lower than 70% of predicted normal values (PNV) existed in 15 (52%) LTX candidates. Handgrip muscle strength was below 80% of PNV in 11 (40%), and quadriceps strength was decreased for 24 subjects in the dominant leg and 22 in the non-dominant leg. Fourteen subjects were classified as household or limited community ambulators and 13 were classified as fall risks. Dyspnea with daily living activities was present in 4 subjects and was rated as moderate at rest in 8 individuals. We observed that physical performance limitations including respiratory and peripheral muscle weakness and frailty were prevalent in LTX candidates. Developing tools for frailty and physical performance assessment holds promise for improving patient outcomes in pre- and post-transplantation. Screening LTX candidates in a clinical setting will help stratify individuals that might have more specific rehabilitation needs pre- and post LTX, ultimately improving outcomes. • Intensive exercise in the early postoperative rehabilitation after hip fracture (up to 3 months postoperatively) is beneficial to the recovery of physical function in older adults. • Intensive exercise with more load lead to greater improvements in muscle strength, balance, and functional ability. • Older adults with cognitive impairment were not included in the studies selected for this review, conclusions about the training results may not be extended to this population. Individuals commonly experience age-related systemic decreases in skeletal muscle strength, physical function, and mobility, leading to falls and potential associated hip fractures. To evaluate whether intensive exercise can improve physical function, mobility, and independence in activities of daily living (ADL) and shorten the length of hospital stay in older adults after hip fracture surgery. This systematic review was conducted under the PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed on January 5, 2022 in eight databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The participants included older adults with hip fracture, and the intervention studied was intensive exercise. The outcomes were physical function, mobility, ADLs, and the length of hospital stay. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.3. Fifteen studies were included in this review. After hip fracture surgery, intensive exercise improved participants' physical function to a greater extent than regular or no exercise (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.25, 1.23). Intensive exercise was particularly more effective for gait speed (SMD = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.30), the timed up-and-go test results (mean difference [MD] = -4.34, 95%CI: -6.74, -1.94), balance (SMD =0.42, 95% CI: 0.38, 0.89), and ADLs (SMD = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.87). The quality of the evidence was low due to risk of bias, inconsistency, and imprecision. • Cognitive health is essential for the healthy life of older people. • We compared the venue and home-visit surveys in a sample of urban older people. • Rate of cognitive decline measured by the MMSE was higher in the home-visit survey. • Participants in the home visit-survey could be more difficult in their daily lives. • Home-visit surveys can help increase the representativeness of older people. We conducted surveys in older people at a venue and in home-visits, and compared cognitive and health status between the two groups to assess their cognitive and everyday functioning. Among 7,614 persons aged 70 years and older living in an urban area, 5,430 responded to a mail survey for sociodemographic characteristics and self-rated questionnaires including the Geriatric Depression Scale-short form (GDS-15). Of these, 1,360 agreed to attend a venue survey, and 693 agreed to take a home-visit survey. Trained nurses examined participants' blood pressure, medical history, and daily functions using the dementia assessment sheet for community-based integrated care system (DASC-21), and tested their cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Of 2,053 participants, 2,020 (venue: 1,352; home-visit: 668) completed the MMSE. Median MMSE scores for the venue and home-visit groups were 28 and 26 points, respectively, with 130/1,352 (9.6%) and 205/668 (30.7%) participants below the traditional 23/24 cutoff score. The home-visit group had lower mobility, lower frequency of going out, poorer mental health, and lower independence in instrumental daily activities. Notably, 39.9% and 43.7% of the venue and home-visit groups lived alone, respectively. In this sample of urban older people, the rate of cognitive decline detected using the MMSE was three times higher in the home-visit group than in the venue group. Home-visit participants were more likely to have difficulty in physical, cognitive, and everyday functioning, suggesting they have a greater need for daily living support to continue living in the community. We examine changes in the level of physical health using longitudinal data on people aged 50+ from nine European countries covering the years from 2004 to 2017. For this purpose we develop a novel approach to identify age, period and cohort effects, which, in contrast to methods relying on mechanical restrictions, uses a step-wise estimation combining information on physical health with data on cognitive abilities. The approach relies on two important assumptions. First, we estimate relative differences between cohorts in cognitive abilities assuming that only age and cohort effects are responsible for their evolution. We then use the estimated proportional cohort differences to restrict the differences between cohorts in health development. The method is applied to the dynamics of four measures of poor health: weak grip strength, limitations in mobility, in activities of daily living (ADL) and in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Our results suggest insignificant or adverse period effects for the evolution of physical health. For example, the difference in likelihood of poor health as measured through weak grip strength between 2004 and 2017 is 2.1 percentage points, p.p., (95% CI -4.3, 8.4), and the corresponding numbers for the other three measures are respectively: 2.0 p.p. (CI -1.6, 5.6); 2.2 p.p. (CI -0.2, 4.7) and 3.0 p.p. (CI 0.3, 5.8). These estimates, which reflect the implications of time over the period of 14 years, are relatively low, but they highlight the surprising fact that any improvements in health in the examined period have been driven essentially by cohort effects. Our evidence is consistent with some earlier studies and sheds new light on recent (pre-pandemic) trends in life expectancy. Smartphones have become central to our daily lives and are often present in the same contexts as their users. Researchers take advantage of this phenomenon by using data from smartphone sensors to infer everyday activities, such as mobility, physical activity, and sleep. For example, that a person is sleeping might be inferred from the fact that their phone is idle and that there is no sound and light around the phone. The success of inference from raw smartphone sensor data to activity outcomes depends, among other factors, on how smartphone owners use their device. Not having the smartphone in close proximity throughout the day, turning the device off, or sharing the device with others can constitute barriers that interfere with accurately measuring everyday activity with data from the phone's native sensors. Against this background, we surveyed two independent, large-scale samples of German smartphone owners (n 1 = 3956; n 2 = 2525) on how they use their smartphones, with a focus on three everyday activities: mobility, physical activity, and sleep. We find that both sociodemographic as well as smartphone-related characteristics are associated with how people use their smartphones, and that this affects the suitability of smartphone data for measuring everyday activities. • Turning smartphone off, leaving it at home, and not carrying it close to body are common behaviors among users. • Smartphone usage behavior differs by sociodemographic and smartphone-related user characteristics. • Bias in measures of everyday activities from smartphone sensors can be attributed to how people use their devices. Psychological traits, such as character strengths, have been already established in experimental studies as factors playing a favorable role for well-being and potentially reducing the risk of depression. Positive associations have been also reported between character strengths and physical fitness, self-reported physical and mental health. Yet, evidence with large scale, epidemiological data on the role of character strength of honesty and integrity (CSHI) in shaping subsequent health outcomes and daily functioning remains unexplored. We examined whether the character strength of honesty and integrity was prospectively associated with six physical health outcomes, two depression outcomes, and two daily functioning outcomes. We used data from the Health and Retirement Study obtained from a sample of 9813 older adults. We found that after a 4-year follow-up period, compared with individuals who scored the lowest in CSHI, participants who scored in the third tertile had a 18% lower risk of lung disease (RR = 0.824; 95% CI = 0.732; 0.927), and a 11% lower risk of depression (RR = 0.891; 95% CI = 0.806; 0.986). They also reported lower limitations in mobility (β = −0.048; 95% CI (−0.089; −0.008)] and less difficulty in instrumental activities of daily living [β = −0.088; 95% CI (−0.128; −0.047)]. These associations were independent of demographics, prior socioeconomic status, psychological factors, health conditions, and health behaviors. Despite policy commitments to support ageing in place, we know very little about the everyday realities and experiences of older people living in different environmental circumstances, with varying personal capabilities. This paper: 1) examines the valued place-based functionings of older people through the use of geo-spatial and in-situ methods, where functionings are defined as states of being and doing, and place-based functionings are defined as places, activities, interactions, routes, and routines that support these beings and doings; and 2) demonstrates the utility of a capability approach by amalgamating the interconnected concepts 'ageing in place' and 'ageing well'. Three in-depth individual experiences of ageing at home in a Dublin (Ireland) suburb show how differing health and mobility challenges are managed, and illustrate how conceptions of ageing well in place can be identified from geographically-grounded lifeworlds. Participants' place-based functionings are identified by combining qualitative and geo-spatial approaches through the use of annotated maps, using data obtained from traditional interviews, go-along interviews, and mapping exercises. Results demonstrate the diversity of place-based functionings valued by each individual, and how functionings are negotiated depending on different needs, wishes, and health or mobility challenges. Results also highlight the importance of supportive environments and social supports in enabling older people to realise their most valued functionings over time, which include being able to get out and about, engage and connect with others, carry out daily tasks and errands confidently, and remain independent. By paying attention to subjectively valued place-based functionings, as well as the specific supports required to sustain them, we can facilitate older people to not just age in place, or age well, but to age - as well as they can - in place. • This article considers ageing well in place through a Capability Approach lens. • Geo-spatial and qualitative methods can illustrate place-based functionings. • Older people should be supported to age – as well as they can – in place. Performance of function-preserving hospitalization processes related to patient mobility, use of continence aids and food intake is significantly associated with outcomes in older adults. Nurses are the front-line personnel responsible for promoting performance of such processes. The degree to which nurse staffing is related to this performance is unclear. To identify nurse-staffing characteristics and nursing-related care needs associated with older patients' mobility, continence care and food intake during acute hospitalization. Cross-sectional study using survey data from the Hospitalization Process Effects on Functional Outcomes and Recovery (HoPE-FOR) cohort study combined with day-level administrative nurse staffing data and clinical day-level aggregated data for all patients hospitalized during the HoPE-FOR study period. Internal medicine units in two medical centers in Israel. Eight hundred seventy-three older adults. Mobility, continence care and food intake were assessed within 2 days of admission using validated questionnaires. Nurse-to-patient ratios and nursing-skill mix (i.e. registered nurses (RNs), nurse aides, nurses with advanced clinical training and RNs with an academic degree) were assessed using administrative data. Decision trees were developed for mobility, continence care and food intake, applying classification and regression-tree analysis. The mobility decision tree identified three characteristics subdividing patients into six nodes: pre-admission functioning, pre-admission activity level and percentage of nurses with advanced training. The percentage of nurses with advanced training classified low-functioning patients into those walking in corridors versus walking or sitting only inside the room. The continence-care classification decision tree identified two characteristics that subdivided the patients into four nodes: pre-admission functioning and bladder control. Nurse-to-patient-ratio variables and patients' nursing-related care needs did not contribute to this classification. The food-intake decision tree identified four characteristics—pre-admission functioning, gender, percentage of nurses with advanced training and percentage of nurse aides—subdividing patients into eight nodes. Low-functioning patients exposed to a higher percentage of nurses with advanced training had food-intake scores 14% higher than patients exposed to a lower percentage of nurses with advanced training. Independent men exposed to a higher percentage of nurse aides had a 14% higher habitual daily in-hospital food-intake score than independent men exposed to a lower percentage of nurse aides. A higher percentage of nurses with post-graduate education is associated with better performance of mobility and food intake of hospitalized older adults. To maintain the potential benefits of highly trained staff, education levels should be considered in scheduling and assignment decision-making processes in internal medicine units. • Older adults generally do not report ADL limitation until 77 years old, and mobility limitation occurs at a various age in Taiwan and Japan. • Older adults generally do not face serious disability until 85 or 86 years old in Taiwan or Japan, respectively. • The speed of disability with age for older adults Taiwan was faster than Japan in ADL and IADL limitation, but not in mobility. Disability development using age as the axis was void in the literature. Identification of the age trajectory of disability development across populations enables preparation for aging-related policies when conducting cross-national comparisons. This study compared three indicators of the development of physical disability in populations of Taiwan and Japan. Data comprised two nationally representative panel surveys (1) the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (N = 3,037) in 1996–2011 and (2) the National Survey of the Japanese Elderly in 1996–2012 (N = 1,974). Older adults (65+) were examined longitudinally. Activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and mobility disability development during aging were analyzed using multilevel models. After age standardization, Japan reported higher prevalence rate of ADL disability (14.95% vs. 9.65%) but lower IADL (19.30% vs. 30.36%) and mobility disability (36.07% vs. 49.82%) as compared with Taiwan. ADL limitation occur (ADL limitation>=1) at the age of 77.9 and 77.2 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Populations reached three ADL limitations at the age of 86.7 and 85.0 in Japan and in Taiwan, respectively. IADL limitation occur (IADL limitation>=1) at the age of 79.1 and 74.5 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Mobility limitation occur (Mobility limitation>=1) at the age of 70.7 and 65.3 for populations in Japan and Taiwan, respectively.
