In this contribution, excerpted from the book edited by Michael Diers, Porträt aus Buchern (Hamburg 1993), Martin Warnke tells us about the Warburg Library and its research activity. The author starts with a survey of the German research institutions of the time, as well as how Warburg's upbringing influenced his way of doing research, and then continues with an examination of the core areas of study pursued by the library: the consequences of antiquity, not to be understood as a historical-artistic but as an interdisciplinary research agenda, applicable to the humanities but also to other areas of life.
