MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive neurosurgical procedure, which in the last decade has gained significant momentum of the treatment of intracranial tumours and epileptic foci. In brief, LITT utilises the heat from a stereotactically placed laser catheter to selectively ablate a lesion or a structure under real-time MRI guidance, which is summarised and discussed in this review. The first LITT system gained FDA approval in 2007 and was CE-marked in 2018. In December 2020, the first patient with recurrent glioblastoma was treated at the Department of Neurosurgery at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen.

The review summarises the available knowledge of psychiatric disorders in Greenland. The dominant problem is the increase in suicide rates especially among young men. The maximum was reached in the 1990s and remains among the world's highest. The incidence of schizophrenia is twice as high as in Denmark, and the course is significantly worse. There are also remarkable differences in the incidence of bipolar disorder and depression between Denmark and Greenland, and the reason is poorly understood.There is a great need for research in effective psychiatric preventive strategies.

The diagnosis rests on magnetic resonance imaging and the treatment consists of heparin or low-molecular weight heparin followed by vitamin K antagonists for three months or more. In fulminant cases local thrombolysis is administered, while symptomatic treatment for increased intracranial pressure is given. In retrospective analyses this approach has been associated with a good outcome – even in cases treated by decompressive craniectomy.

Epidemiological studies report an odds ratio of 2-4 for major depression among patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) compared with healthy controls. Also a high prevalence of RLS in populations of depressed patients is seen. Several possible explanations are proposed, such as dopamine dysfunction, sleep disturbances, shared diagnostic criteria and adverse effects of antidepressive treatment. There is a low degree of evidence for a treatment strategy when depression and RLS coexist. Furthermore, it is important to realize, that some antidepressants can induce or worsen RLS.

A 16-year-old girl was diagnosed with widely distributed dural sinus thrombosis (DST) and a haemorrhagic infarct in the left parietal lobe. Despite of heparin treatment, pronounced aggravation of symptoms was observed. Through a femoral vein approach a micro-catheter was advanced into the superior sagittal sinus and rt-PA was infused slowly, directly into the thrombus over 24 hours. A follow up angiogram showed recanalisation of sinus. The patient recovered almost completely, with only few remaining cognitive symptoms. This treatment remains experimental, but should be kept in mind for DST-patients unresponsive to heparin treatment.

Introduction: We wish to study the development in the Danish population's use of the internet for health-related purposes. What has changed from 2005 to 2007? Who is the typical user and what exactly is the internet used for?, Material and Methods: As part of a larger EU-funded survey, 1,000 randomly selected Danes between 15-80 years of age completed a questionnaire in the fall 2005. The same questions were put to 1.021 Danes in the spring of 2007 to study any trends., Results: A total of 72% of the Danes use the internet when searching for information on health. This constitutes an increase of 20% from 2005. Personal contact with the general practitioner (GP) is still the most important source of health and illness information, but more than 50% also consider the internet to be an important or very important source of health information. Women are still more active than men when searching for health information. A total of 20% of the Danes have consulted their own GP online, which is a 161% increase. Also, it has become more important for the Danes when choosing a GP that he or she offers eServices., Conclusion: The Danes' use of the internet for health information purposes has increased. And when the Danes seek health and illness information, it is primarily used to decide if the GP should be consulted. The GP remains the primary source of information and the Danes consult with their GP more and more frequently via the internet.

The rupture of an intracranial aneurysm causing subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has an incidence of 10 per 100,000 in Denmark. The diagnosis is confirmed on CT-scan which shows blood in the subarachnoid space. Formerly, rebleeding was prevented by surgical application of clips. However, at present endovascular embolisation with coils has become the standard treatment. The endovascular methods have improved so much during the last 10 years that some 90% of all aneurysms can currently be secured by using endovascular methods. Vasospasms which are often a most serious complication to SAH can be treated effectively with endovascular methods.

Juvenile angiofibroma is a rare, benign, rich vascular tumor, and approximately one new case is diagnosed in Denmark each year. It sits in the foramen sphenopalatinum and occurs in boys from 14 to 25 years of age. The most frequent initial symptoms are nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Through the years, the treatment of juvenile angiofibroma has included many methods, including surgical excision, electrocoagulation, interstitial or external radiation therapy, cryosurgery, hormone administration and chemotherapy. Radiation, chemotherapy and surgery have proven to be the most effective treatments. The most serious complication has been preoperative bleeding, but since the introduction of preoperative particle embolization the blood loss has been greatly reduced. Today, surgery preceded by embolization is the primary standard treatment. It is important to diagnose the tumor early, when radical surgery is easier and the frequency of recurrence is lower.

Introduction: Juvenile angiofibroma is a benign, rich vascular nasal tumor, and the biggest complication in surgery is the great loss of blood. Since 1997, Odense University Hospital (OUH) has used preoperative particle embolization and endoscopic surgery to combat this problem., Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of the eight patients who have been treated since 1997 was done. The embolization, which was carried out in the radiotherapy department, was done with polyvinyl alcohol particles in the vessels that supply the tumor. The operation was then performed in the ear, nose and throat department of OUH. The tumor was removed endoscopically in all cases in which it was possible., Results: All eight patients were embolized preoperatively. The average preoperative bleeding was 375 ml, a little less when endoscopic access was possible. This is in agreement with the literature and may be considered to be satisfactory., Discussion: Endovascular embolization of juvenile angiofibromas followed by endoscopic surgery is considered to be the preferred treatment method today.

Introduction: Treatment of posterior epistaxis with an intranasal balloon catheter (double balloon--Epistat) or posterior balloon (Foley catheter) as a posterior packing combined with a gauze plug as the anterior packing is often very troublesome for the patient. In the western world, the introduction of endoscopic electrocoagulation or ligation of the sphenopalatine artery has proved to be effective in the treatment of persistent posterior epistaxis, and it reduces morbidity. We have therefore introduced the same treatment modality., Material and Methods: We have used this technique so far on six patients with persistent posterior epistaxis. They were admitted to the ENT Department, H:S Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, during the period 1.4.2000-15.11.2000., Results: The treatment terminated the epistaxis in all cases. One patient had anterior epistaxis postoperatively, and this was treated with ligation of the arterior ethmoidal artery. The time spent in hospital after the operation was 1-2 days., Conclusion: This method is recommended for the treatment of persistent posterior epistaxis, when functional endoscopic techniques are mastered. Early treatment reduces morbidity and cuts down the stay in hospital.
