1. Cardiac arrest after sudden cessation of alcohol consumption

Abstract

Chronic alcohol abuse can cause both acute and chronic health problems. Unfortunately, sudden cessation is problematic, with risk of complications ranging from mild to lethal. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with substantial alcohol abuse, who suffered cardiac arrest after sudden withdrawal of alcohol. No other cause of death was found despite thorough examination. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a potentially fatal condition and the risks of sudden withdrawal should be recognized and treated.

Abstract

Resuscitation after cardiac arrest is unlikely if a reversible cause is not identified and treated. The potentially reversible causes can be described as hypoxia, hypovolaemia, hypo-/hyper-kalaemia/other metabolic disorders, hypothermia and tension pneumothorax, tamponade (cardiac), toxins and thrombus. We report a case in which thrombolysis was used successfully during prolonged resuscitation. The patient was later confirmed to have had a massive pulmonary embolus. He was discharged to his home 13 days after cardiac arrest without any sign of neurological deficit.
