Flint scrapers are one of the most common tool types and are found all over the world. In Denmark, they exist in all phases extending from the Hamburg culture to the end of the Bronze Age -- perhaps even longer. Despite the large quantities of scrapers, the analyses of them are nonetheless sparse. The scrapers have, however, been subjected to various wear trace analyses over time to determine their function as well as their contact material. This has produced some interesting studies, but since we often have neither the time, the money nor the qualified staff to look at all the scrapers through a microscope, the intention of this article is, along with an examination of microscopic usewear analysis conducted on scrapers from Danish Museum collections, to define the various macro wear traces and measurable metric criteria which can assist in classifying the scrapers' contact material.
