Evaluative expressives undermine the objectivity of news reporting. To identify them, a complex taxonomy has been created. Subsequent analysis of television news has shown a high frequency of use of evaluation expressions in the statement, moreover contextually connected with other evaluation units. - Abstract
The article examines reflecting on men's long haircuts in Czech media of 1960s and 1970s. The analysis of newspaper texts and selected TV programmes gives a clear impression of nonverbal and verbal strategies of manipulation and involvement of expressivity (which might be either self-evident, or disguised), and draws some general conclusions on the principles of public communication in totalitarian regime (which always could profit from social conformity and limited public awareness). The media texts, presenting the official standpoint of the Party and government, indicate that authorities were not willing to admit that some sociocultural matters were outside their control. Their criticism was, therefore, formulated in authoritarian, categorical and confident statements anchored in the "scientific" grounds of Communism: men with long hair were said to offend against "taste and decency", or even "the hygienic practice". All negative events in forward-looking and harmonious Czechoslovakia were presented as the influence of the western capitalist countries that threatened socialism directly, or at least supported the local enemies of the progress. 4. Timrava´s Initiation Text and the New Journey of the Epic

Timrava´s work is the perfect example of the acceleration of thematic and poetic tendencies in Slovak literature of the late 19th century. The writer adopts a polemic-opposing provocative attitude towards the well-established Post-Romantic patterns. The autobiographical novella Skúsenosť (Experience, 1902) represents a modern literary attitude through extending literary possibilities of revealing human psyche in crisis situations. The novella has the basis in the experinces of the main character called Martina, who comes to the town of Vodňany to work as widow Bukovičová´s companion. What the young writer expected from the new enviroment was a warm welcome, meetings with nationally conscious people, especially poet Javor (P. O. Hviezdoslav), who is the widow´s re. lative. However, the small town gave her quite a shock confronting her with hypocricy, malice, superficiality, and its image was totally different from that based on the heroine´s naive expectations. Timrava used the large-scale novella to make Martina go through a great disappointment over Bukovičová as well as her national idols – this ordeal is also a journey of self-discovery, though. What is modern in this novella is not only the negativity of experience and the destruction of the writer´s self-portrait, it s also the positivity of creative self-affirmation, realization of one´s own value and justification of the creative identity after her text was censored in the Slovenské pohľady.

- Abstract
The paper shows different approaches to creativity, i.e. emergence of new meanings, in Merleau-Ponty and Patočka. The comparison is based mainly on Merleau-Ponty's lectures L'institution dans l'histoire personnelle et publique (1954/55) and Patočka's project Negative Platonism (1953). Despite some similarities evident in the key concepts "institution" and "transcendence", there is a decisive difference between the two approaches concerning the temporality of creation. Whereas Merleau-Ponty likens the temporality of institution to future perfect tense, emphasizing the intertwining of present and future events, Patočka understands novelty as something totally different from present state of affairs. In his eyes, the question of how something new can arise equals the question of how attitude of distance to existing traditions can be achieved. Contrary to Patočka, Merleau-Ponty argues that any living tradition tends towards its own transformation and presents a case of self-transcendence, because it is governed by the principle of divergence (écart). Finally, we argue that some aspects of these two approaches both complement each other, and also show the limits of each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The paper tests the hypothesis that prosodic highlighting of individual words with emotional connotation can affect the recipient's perception of the expressiveness of the entire utterance. Seventeen respondents listened to two speech realizations of the same text and marked its emotional level on the scale between positive and negative. To achieve emotional neutrality of the utterances, they were synthesized with Kempelen 3.0 speech system. The results show a tendency of respondents to perceive speech with prosodically highlighted negative words as more negative (sad) than speech with positive words highlighted, which was marked as more positive (joyful). The material collected for producing lexical linguistic maps and defining typical areas of designations in Slovenian dialects in Austrian Carinthia includes expressions denoting ‘slap’. The majority of these designations are expressive, and they also share an unclear or onomatopoetic origin. Based on a comparison of the meanings of etymologically and word-formationally related vocabulary, these designations can be classified into semantic groups. The areal distribution of designations for ‘slap’ is classified into several types of areal distributions of vocabulary in Austrian Carinthia.

- Abstract
Beethoven's personality and work is the foremost element in the musicological heritage created by Rudolf Pečman that is manifested especially by his monograph Ludwig van Beethoven's Stage Work (1999). In the 1950s Pečman examined the slavonic subjects in Beethoven, mainly the relations between Russian folk songs and String quartets op. 59 - Rasumovsky. The world of Czech musical classicism is represented by Georg Anton Benda in particular. Pečman finds the elements common to both composers in their philosophical and aesthetic sources, e.g. the appassionata style. This view is applied to the dramatic relationship of two singspiels, The Village Market and Fidelio. Pečman also creates the similar analysis of two stage works, Fidelio and Smetana's Dalibor. He formulates common features and differences of these dramas, e.g. the inner spiritual connection and operatic typology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The central focus of this Master's thesis is to describe the ways the elements of linguistic expressivity used in political speeches are transformed in French-to-Czech simultaneous interpreting. In the introductory part of the present thesis, we provide a summary of previous research on the means of expressivity in political speeches, which is completed by a description of the process of simultaneous interpreting. In this way, we intend to define possibilities of transfer of expressive elements in the French-to-Czech language combination. The second part consists of an in-depth contrastive analysis of original French and Czech political speeches followed by a comparison of the former with their interpreted versions. In the third step, we compared the original Czech speeches with interpretations. Using our own methodology, we assessed collected data and came to the conclusion that in French-to- Czech simultaneous interpreting, expressivity rate decreases. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

This thesis deals with the question of how vulgarisms are translated in the context of a literary text. First we sum up the theories of expressivity used in both common and literary communication. We point out the main typological differences between Czech and French as well as the key cultural differences in the perception of expressivity. We define the term 'vulgarism' and try to outline the use of substandard language in both Czech and French literature. In the following chapter Michel Houellebecq, his work and the fundamental traits of his writing style are presented. We also look at the reception of the Czech translation of Houellebecq's novel Les Particules élémentaires. Then we analyse the translation, focusing on the transfer of vulgarisms in order to trace and evaluate the translation method used to convey the vulgar elements of the original work.

The present master's thesis tackles the position of vulgarisms within the system of language as used in texts published in Czech and French weekly opinion magazines. The thesis takes a theoretic and empiric approach, the first part dealing with the definition of the term of vulgarism in Czech and French stylistics and the delimitation of its role in the style of journalistic texts. The second part of the thesis describes the practical approach of Czech and French weeklies to vulgarisms in their texts based on a survey among editing staff of the major publishing houses both in France and in the Czech Republic. The outcomes of the survey were compared to the analysis results conveyed on a corpus built out of texts published in Le Point and Respekt weeklies. Based on the contrastive analysis of vulgarisms used in Czech and French language corpus, following the critical criteria as outlined in the first part of the thesis, several recommendations are made about French-Czech translations of vulgarisms in journalistic texts.
