The Austro-German population of Ireland in 1936 was 529. Approximately 25% of the adult male cohort were, or became, members of Hitler’s Nazi Party (NSDAP). A small cadre of senior figures in the party were active in recruiting new members as Nazi Germany’s fortunes rose from 1933 to 1939. Some 32 Germans and Austrians resident in pre-war Ireland have been identified as Nazi Party members, although a small number of these were exchange students rather than full-time residents. This paper examines the six NSDAP members who held senior positions in the Irish public service. As Irish state employees they were in a contradictory position: swearing loyalty to Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich while attempting to hold down important jobs on the Irish state payroll. Dr. David O’Donoghue’s article scrutinises the activities of these six men, as well as explaining how they tried, by varying degrees, to serve two masters. The paper also examines their wartime and post-war lives.

This bachelor's dissertation is an attempt at an edition of the correspondence of one of many people who during World War II were in forced labour. The chosen person was RSDr. Václav Jakl. The chosen correspondence for this dissertation is between the years 1944 and 1945 which was kept in the Personal Collection of RSDr. Václav Jakl (1938-1985) and stored in State Regional Archive in Pilsen. The correspondence consists of a letter that he used to exchange with his family and friends. The letters describe both the everyday life of people in forced labour as well as the life of people in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The first chapter of this dissertation is dedicated to the methodology used in the dissertation, the method of oral history, resources and literature. For the purpose of the dissertation, it was vital to focus on correspondence as a historical recourse to highlight the possible complications and issues that the researcher could encounter during their research. The next chapter is explaining to the reader the concept of forced labour, its development and the organisational structure in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. As the reader needs to understand the organisational structure of forced labour, the fourth chapter is dedicated to the role of the Office of Labour. Because the foundation of personal correspondence is tightly connected to the day to day lives of the people correspondents, this dissertation must include a chapters about the everyday life of people in forced labour in the Third Reich and the development of the Staňkov Region in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia where the family of Vaclav Jakl lived. The next few chapters are devoted to Vaclav Jakl himself, his life before and during forced labour, and his close and distant family with who he wrote the correspondence. At the end of the dissertation, the reader will find the list of abbreviations and bibliography. The attachments include a note of edition, edited texts of used correspondence, an index of names and locations, a sample of contemporary literary work of Václav Jakl and a pictorial appendix.

This master's thesis aims to analyze the biographical novel Gerron and the Nazi propaganda film about "the happy life of Jews in the ghetto," in whose production the protagonist of the said novel participated, and to provide a closer look at the period of the Third Reich and the atrocious Holocaust through the example of the Terezín ghetto, where both the biographical novel and the Nazi propaganda film are set. Charles Lewinsky's biographical novel Gerron from 2011, which was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize, combines a factual and a fictional biography of the famous German actor and director of Jewish descent Kurt Gerron, who was chosen in 1944 as a prisoner in the Terezín ghetto to write the screenplay for and then to direct a Nazi propaganda film depicting "the happy life of Jews in the Terezín ghetto." That is why this master's thesis consisting of five chapters deals in the individual chapters with 1) factual and fictional (artistically rendered) biography and their differences; 2) basic information about the life and work of the writer Charles Lewinsky; 3) a sketch of the period of the Third Reich and the atrocious Holocaust based on the example of the Terezín ghetto; 4) the constellation and characterization of the literary characters in relation to the moral conflict which the text...

- Abstract
During the time of Nazi rule, racial hygiene and related research was one of the most politicised and misused academic subjects at German universities (including the German Charles University in Prague). Aside from Karl Thums, Prague professor and director of the ‘model’ Institute of Racial Hygiene at the German Charles University, another ‘prominent’ champion of this discipline worked in the Czech Lands. This was Lothar Tirala (1886-1974), a native of Brno. After graduating from the University of Vienna, Tirala became an assistant lecturer of the institute of physiology of the German University in Prague (1923-24). His plan was to receive habilitation in Prague, but after an unsuccessful attempt Tirala returned to Brno as a doctor specialised in gynaecology and urology. In 1933, he became full professor and director of the Institute for Racial Hygiene at the medical faculty in Munich, one of the most important institutions of its kind in Germany. He was appointed despite the opposition of experts (Alfred Ploetz, Fritz Lenz and Ernst Rüdin all thought him to be an ambitious ideologist poorly qualified in requisite fields) at the insistence of Bavarian political and Party circles (members of the Wagnerian circle in Bayreuth and Julius Streicher intervened on his behalf). An exemplary ‘German mentality’ probably played a key role in the appointment of this man, then still a Czechoslovak citizen allegedly “persecuted by the ‘democratic’ regime as well as socialist, Masonic, and Judeo-Bolshevik circles.” After his minimal scientific and pedagogical qualification as well as several cases of medical malpractice, old and new, came to light, Tirala had to leave the University of Munich in the spring of 1936. He lost the right to use the title ‘professor’ but kept fighting this decision until the1950s and 1960s, claiming he was a ‘victim of political persecution.’ After the war, he worked at various places in Germany and Austria. Tirala’s career has been described in foreign academic press. The aim of the present article is to emphasise its Czech connections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of Nazi propaganda on the Olympic Games in 1936. It describes the preparation and organization of the Winter Olympic Games in Garmisch- Partenkirchen and the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. The main goal of the thesis is to find out whether the regime of the organizing country influenced the course of such an important sporting event and possibly to what extent. The Nazis were originally opposed to the idea of hosting the Olympic Games, but eventually came to the conclusion that this was a unique opportunity to present the Third Reich in the best light and gain the favour of world opinion and depict a positive image of Germany. After Adolf Hitler came to power, over time, sport was identified as one of the priorities of Nazi education, which was to strengthen and prepare the German youth for the future war. During this time, Jews were increasingly expelled from society and became second-class. Their fate in Germany provoked a wave of resentment abroad. Despite numerous boycotts of the Olympic Games, however, a record number of states and athletes took part in the Olympics in Germany. The representatives of the participating States were reassured by the promise of equal conditions for all participants in the Games. This pushed the Jewish question into...

The theme of the bachelor thesis is the influence of the 1936 Summer Olympic Games on the foreign policy of Nazi Germany and its image in the international community. The thesis aims to verify whether the Nazis managed to use the Olympic Games to improve the image of Nazi Germany abroad and then to leave the unfavorable foreign policy position in which it was located. The bachelor thesis is divided into two well-arranged parts, in the first one the author deals with the starting position of Germany in the international community and his foreign policy before the Olympic Games. In addition, in this section he deals with the Olympic Games themselves. In the second part, based on newspaper articles and an internal report produced by the Foreign Office, the author investigates the influence of the Olympic Games on the image of Germany abroad and later on its foreign policy. The Nazis sharply opposed the Olympics at a time when they were assigned to the fragile Weimar Republic as an award for their efforts to return the country to the cultural society of modern states. However, they realized in time what opportunity they had been given, and after joining the power they organized with great effort spectacular and, in many ways, progressive games that predetermined the direction the Olympic Movement would...

The diploma thesis deals with mutual trade between the United States of America and the Third Reich during the years 1933 - 1945 and analyzes the influence of American companies that had their branches or other business interests in Germany during Nazism. The thesis analyzes the international trade and its development between both states in the pre-war period as well as international trade during the war. Thesis deals with the contribution of American companies to the German war economy and analyzes their influence and behavior change after the outbreak of war. The hypothesis on the reduction of business co-operation with the on-going war at state level has been confirmed, just as hypothesis of continuing the cooperation of American firms after the outbreak of war.

This thesis deals with the poster of the Nazi Third Reich and the ideology shaped by the images and text communication, which it presents. The work looks at the poster as an important medium of communication that served Nazi propaganda to spread National Socialist ideology. This thesis aims to analyse these myths and debunk them in the way how Roland Barthes defines them in his book Mythologies. The author of the diploma thesis applies the traditional method of qualitative research of the media content - mythological and semiotic analysis - to demystify the myths and semiotic characters used in the selected Nazi posters. The first part of the thesis contains terminology, the second part presents the analysis of the individual posters, which are divided into several groups. In the conclusion of the thesis, the author presents a list of common symbols and myths, which are the result of the analysis.

The goal of this thesis is to do research , as wide as possible, in the most popular part of hobby named reenacting or reenacting (Napoleonic era, Austro-Prussian Wars, American Civil War, Second World War and some new topic - Czechoslovak Peoples Army, Royal Air Force and Czechoslovak Policemen before WW2). Thats mean commemoration and re-enactment of military history and military units in whole its history from time before 1989 to the future. I tried to find grounds of this hobby and describe development of it. As I expected, progress of this hobby or movement is larger, but this hobby existed before 1989 too. Reenactors reenacted and portrayed older conflicts as Napoleonic and Austro-Prussian war. Future reenactors were mainly fencers and tramps. Year 1989 was turning point for all reenactors. Theirs hobby is legal, it is possible to travel, to unite, to ground living history groups, own weapons, speak about all part of our history. It was possible to share and search information, regulation with and in foreign countries, foreigners and archives and museums. Main goal of reenactors is to portray theirs archetypes as good as possible. Public can see not only reconstruction of battles, but open air exhibition - "very interactive museums". This thesis can't be described as "Complete, all history of...

This dissertation deals with German-Soviet economic and political relations from 1939 to 1941. These were forms of totalitarian regimes whose cooperation was not suspended though its own dynamics were influenced by ideological, economic, and political conditions. One of the motives for the intensification of German-Soviet cooperation was Germany's attempt to secure self-sufficiency in the development of raw materials. The German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact of August 23rd, 1939 was a calculated accord with precise objectives when in both systems common national interests, which consisted also in the partition of Poland, overshadowed their ideological differences. This work outlines the circumstances of the negotiations, the main actors, and motives leading to the creation of the most significant trade agreements. It quantifies the Soviet deliveries exported to the German economy in the given period and analyzes the fulfillment of contractual obligations. A barely two-year business relationship in which Reich Foreign Ministry was significantly engaged provided more short-term benefits to the German war economy, especially in quantitative terms. It helped Hitler, among others, partially solve the import dependency. With regard to the structure of trade, the Stalinist regime was particularly important for the Nazi economy because of imports of raw materials and food. Reciprocally, Hitler's Germany represented a notable source of technologies and arms production. Business contracts completion was affected by military operations, strategic plans, contract terms and conditions, and other factors. In the last part, the thesis analyzes the German economic situation in the occupied territories of the USSR in the years 1941-1943 with respect to the area of present-day Ukraine and Belarus. The aim was to answer the question of whether the planned economic goals were achieved, and to characterize the most important factors influencing German economic gains. Part of this research was an analysis of the overall balance of obtained minerals, food, and labor in order to provide an answer to the question whether it was worth it, in purely quantitative terms, for Germany to terminate economic cooperation and attack the Soviet Union. Military action was motivated by economic objectives, while there is no doubt about the racially ideological background. In the elaboration and implementation of occupation policy representatives of the industrial and banking sectors or the Reich's ministries were actively involved. Benefits expected from the economic occupation of the Soviet territory were not realized. Efficiency and goals achievement were complicated by evacuation and collaboration, also corruption, guerrilla activities, and the concept of occupation policy.
