The study focuses on the early medieval large glass beads from the area of Poland, i.e. specimens whose diameter equals at least 1.5 cm but usually ca. 2 cm or more. The main aim of this study is to define their function, considering the precise context of discovery of particular specimens, metric data and microscopic analyses. Another important task of the study is to determine whether large beads were local products or imports, and from which region and in what social circumstances they reached the studied area. Alongside macroscopic and stylistic features, the chemical composition of glass that was used for the production of the beads can be conclusive in this situation. In our opinion, it is a special category of finds that appeared in this part of Europe during the time of cultural and political transformation in the 11th–13th centuries.

Funerary and settlement areas of the Middle and Late Bronze Age in the vicinity of Březnice near Bechyně. The article contains information about new funerary and settlement sites dating to the Bronze Age which have been discovered in the surroundings of the well-known Late Bronze Age settlement with ditches near Březnice in the Bechyně region. Three sites disturbed by ploughing have been identified which can be labeled as flat cemeteries from the early phases of the Late Bronze Age (Br D - Ha A1) while one of them also contained settlement features (e.g. an oven). Another site yielded a solitary ceramic amphora dating back to the Middle Bronze Age. Two hitherto undated barrow cemeteries near Březnice have also yielded the first finds indicative of the Middle and Late Bronze Age. The above flat cemeteries represent the first evidence for this type of Late Bronze Age monuments in the Bechyně region, but their state of preservation also reveals that such sites are often devastated and damaged by deep ploughing. The analyzed cemeteries have also yielded, among others, the first Late Bronze Age glass beads known from South Bohemia. The newly discovered and partly examined funerary sites in the cadastral area of Březnice have significantly enriched our knowledge about the burial rite of the Urnfield period in South Bohemia. From the viewpoint of quantity, these discoveries increase the number of known graves by roughly one fifth, and the number of known pit/surface graves by more than one half. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The largest known collection of La Tène glass from Němčice in Moravia dating to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC also includes glass beads originating in southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean. As in Pistiros, the beads could have been related to the same events of a military, trade or other nature. The relative scarcity of imported beads in Němčice is explained by the glass‑working activities at this site, which covered the needs of the local population.

The aim of the experimental research was to verify the hypothesis of glass bead production in an open hearth. In this case, data from archeological excavations in Ribe, where the remains of “glass” hearths were discovered, was utilised. The experiment involved the forming of the hearth, where a clay nozzle in the shape of a loom weight was placed in the centre. The air was pumped into the hearth using bellows equipped with a separate air circulation system. The results of the research indicate that, thanks to such a construction and thanks to the process of charcoal sieving, the manufacturing of simple and more complex glass beads is simple and the hearths themselves are quite effective.
