- Abstract
The Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín prepared an exhibition of the painter Jan Merta (*1952), one of the most significant Czech painters from the breakthrough generation of the 1980s. Merta, based on the reflection of contemporary postmodern tendencies and, on the basis of his own situational self-reflection, has brought radical changes to Czech fine art. He projects issues from the real-world through his own memory into unique visualizations of his own experiences. As a narrator, he transforms all types of childhood memories, people, and events into a concrete form. By placing them in other contexts and processing them freely, he is able to assign them with a new content. Merta’s first solo exhibition at the KGVU in Zlín aims to present a cross-section of his work from the past 20 years, focusing on the paintings from his “personal vault”. The author then speaks to Jan Merta and discusses the exhibition, his work, life, and family [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
