Long-term trends of abundance and diversity of forest birds have been very stable over past decades in European managed forests. It can be caused by high heterogeneity on habitat scale. In European cultural landscapes, there is another habitat very similar to managed forests, and that is a historic manor park. The parks can even show higher bird diversity than managed forests. However, there is an evident knowledge gap related to long-term changes of bird abundance and diversity in the habitats of manor parks. In this study we observed long-term changes of bird community in the historic manor park Čechy pod Kosířem (Czech Republic) using comparison of bird territory mapping in 2022–2023 with older bird studies in this locality. We gained an overview of bird community changes in the manor park for the period of 1997–2023. Results show that the bird community in historic manor park was remarkably unvarying in abundance and diversity. Historic manor parks can be considered as important refuges for forest bird diversity in cultural landscapes. We discuss the research implications for conserving bird diversity in managed forests especially in connection with large old trees preservation providing heterogeneity of nest habitats. More frequent and severe natural disturbances are likely to increase as a result of climate change. However, we have little evidence of the disturbance severity effect on forest birds. We aimed to compare the effect of natural disturbance severity on the bird species in the spruce forests of Šumava NP. For this purpose, we surveyed bird communities in 1) small- and 2) large-scale disturbances, 3) enclaves of live trees in large-scale disturbance areas and 4) non-disturbed forests. Birds were sampled using the point count method in breeding season 2021 and analysed using redundancy analysis (RDA). We recorded 42 bird species on a total of 141 survey points. Small-scale disturbances had generally positive effects on many common forest bird species. On the other hand, large-scale disturbances negatively affected birds of closed canopy stands (e.g. Fringilla coelebs) and positively species of open or shrub habitats (e.g. Anthus trivialis) and some birds with conservation status (e.g. Tetrao urogallus). The size of damaged area was a crucial factor which changed the effect of disturbances on many species. Bird assemblage in the Gavurky Protected Area was studied in 2003–2013 (80 days in the field) and compared with published results from 1992–1994. Altogether 97 bird species was found in the study area (133.5 ha), of them 52 breeding species in 2003–2013. In 1992–1994 there were registered similar number of species (96) but of them more breeding species (64). Furthermore, there were trapped and ringed altogether 27 bird species (174 specimens) during 21 trapping sessions in 2003–2013, and the most abundant there were Parus major, Phylloscopus collybita, Poecile palustris, and rare were there e.g. Merops apiaster, Jynx torquilla, Regulus ignicapilla, Ficedula hypoleuca. Altogether 23 species of European importance revealed high regional importance of this area. Sustainability of the habitat, its perspective and conservation management were discussed. Supporting of natural regeneration of the parent stand seems to be the most urgent measure.

During the last century, the changing forms of agriculture drastically influenced many native plant and animal populations. In the efforts to reduce these negative impacts on biodiversity, a number of agricultural enterprises began farming in a more environmentally friendly ways; in addition to conventional farm management, new forms of integrated and organic farming appeared, the latter having a tradition of only a few years. These new approaches have a number of variations, one of which is termed integrated farming. It exerts less pressure on the given environment, and, together with organic agriculture, plays an important role in the efforts to renew long lost cultures. Support for integrated farming can be one of the intermediate stages between organic farming and agri-environmental programmes that very often complement one another. Despite the organic farming may have a negative impact on crop yields and considers individual approaches to problematic sites as well as applications of locally specific rules, a number of studies have confirmed that this kind of farming positively influences biodiversity of a given area. This review highlights importance of integrated farming and calls for its larger use in agricultural practice.
