Takvi zahvati povećavaju investicijske troškove ali, s druge strane, značajno povećavaju raspoloživost mreže i smanjuju gubitke operatora i korisnika zbog neostvarenog prometa. Availability of optical fibre transmission network significantly influences the availability of telecommunication network, i.e. the quality of service offered to users by such network. Due to inevitable failures on optical fibre network, it is necessary to protect the transmission links with redundant structures. These interventions require the increase of investment expenses but, on the other hand, they significantly increase the network availability and decrease the operator’s and users’ losses due to unrealized operations. The work analyzes the kinds of failures and their impact on the optical fibre network, with behaviour of the existing network in time of failure. Different scenarios of protection of the existing network are applied on the model of optical fibre transmission network. Based on the collected information on failures, the failure rate and the repair rate for real network and the availability for the model of transmission link are attained, with the applied path protection, span protection, i.e. p-Cycles protection. Application of redundant structures for the real transmission link is analysed in relation to the availability and realization cost with influence on the service quality. The carried analysis may serve the operators as guideline for construction of new connections, i.e. improvement and optimization of existing ones.
