Aim: The aim of this study is to present the basic facts on current understanding of mother to child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We also briefly describe the care of pregnant women and children in Croatia from 2000 to 2017. Methods: We analyzed major characteristics of pregnant HIV infected women who gave birth and HIV infected children (<18 years) who were treated at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Zagreb in the period 2000 to 2017. The data were extracted from the local electronic database and reported with descriptive statistics. Results: There have been 25 pregnancies in 18 HIV-positive women in the period 2000 to 2017. Of 18 women, 12 (66.7%) had been diagnosed with HIV before the first pregnancy. Of 25 newborns HIV infection was diagnosed in 3 (12%). Women who gave birth to an HIV-infected child had a premature delivery and poor adherence to antiretroviral (n=1), a premature delivery and diagnosis of HIV in late in pregnancy (n=1) and term delivery and diagnosis of HIV in late pregnancy (n=1). In the period 2000-2017, 13 children entered care (9 female, median age 2.9 years). All but 2 children acquired HIV through MTCT while the 2 adolescents acquired HIV through male to male sex. Conclusion: In Croatia, the number of HIV infected pregnant women and children are very low. Most of the pregnancies are found in women who already knew that they are HIV infected. Even though the number of HIV infected children is low implementation of routine screening for HIV in pregnant women in Croatia should be strongly considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
